Dog injured in Geneva gets new home

By BRENDA SCHORY bschory@shawmedia.com The dog injured by a car on Geneva’s east side last month now has a new name, a new owner and a new leash on life.

Sid, formerly dubbed Holden

by Emergency Vet Services of St. Charles, was adopted recently by Matt Klimek-Sulak, 26, a technician at the St. Charles Veterinary Clinic, where the dog was being treated.

“He never leaves my side,” Klimek-Sulak said. “If I’m home, he’s always next to me. When we walk, he always has to look back and make sure I’m still there.”

Police took the dog to the emergency vet and sought the animal’s owner.

Practice manager Marty Strauss said the dog had no microchip, and no one came forward to claim him.

Sid needs help with pain and surgery on his teeth, which were broken after being hit.

Klimek-Sulak said Sid needed two teeth pulled and now eats anything and everything.

Homes for Endangered and Lost Pets of St. Charles, an all-volunteer organization that fosters dogs and cats for adoption, used its emergency fund to pay for Sid’s medical treatment and surgery.

Strauss said Klimek-Sulak and Sid seemed to have an instant connection as soon as the injured dog came into his care.

Klimek-Sulak said he had been wanting a dog for a while, but was not serious about finding a pet – that is, until he met Sid. “I saw the look on his face and heard his backstory and I had to give him a good home,” Klimek-Sulak said.“He is the best dog I could have asked for.”

An injured boxer mix dog that was hit by an SUV was receiving care at the St. Charles Veterinary Clinic and now has a new home. The dog was injured about 10 p.m. June 23 on Geneva’s east side near the CVS Pharmacy.

GENEVA – Those stopping in at Delnor Hospital in coming months can expect the need to pardon the dust – not to mention inconveniences associated with the hospital’s continued renovation and construction projects.

Through the summer and into the fall, the hospital will rebuild its south parking lot – the lot closest to Randall Road – while renovating its south entranceway.

Delnor President Robert Friedberg said the parking lot work is a periodic maintenance item.

“This is a normal reconstruction,” Friedberg said. “It’s just something that needed to be done.”

However, since the parking lot would be inaccessible during the construction, executives with Cadence Health – the parent health system that operates Delnor and Central DuPage Hospital in Winfield – opted to also move ahead with plans to renovate the south entrance and certain corridors within the hospital.

When completed, he said, the corridors will be easier to navigate, allowing “straight northsouth” public access between each entrance.

Friedberg estimated the work at the south entrance, which began in May, will be completed by early November.

When that work is completed, the hospital then will begin work on a two-story 17,800-square-foot addition to the hospital’s north side.

The addition will help centralize access for heavily-used services, such as cardiology and radiology, and also will include a corridor to provide a direct inside link to the emergency department, a feature the hospital currently lacks.

The addition will be completed in 18 months from the beginning of construction in late 2013 or early 2014, Friedberg said.

He said the construction projects come as part of Cadence’s larger $90 million “reinvestment program” at the hospital.

That program also includes renovations within the hospital’s emergency department and new outpatient clinical space for pediatric subspecialists through Cadence’s partnership with Lurie Children’s Hospital.

He said the money spent to improve clinical services and the hospital’s physical plant and appearance serve as visual indicators to the community of Cadence’s intentions to continue to serve the Tri-Cities area “long term.”

“We could have done this over multiple, multiple years,” Friedberg said. “But our view was, ‘Let’s get this done.’”

GENEVA – A Geneva man was charged with driving under the influence and leaving the scene after police said he hit a parked car while driving in the wrong lane.

Kyle J. Devaney, 25, of the 2100 block of Williamsburg Avenue, Geneva, also was charged June 23 with

driving with a blood-alcohol level greater than 0.08 percent, possession of drug paraphernalia, leaving the scene of a vehicle damage accident, failure to reduce speed to avoid an accident, illegal transportation of alcohol and a written warning for driving without insurance.

According to the crash report, Devaney drove north on the 0-99 block of Bridge-

port lane 200 feet south of Williamsburg in the wrong lane and hit a parked car, a 2003 Mitsubishi Montero, head-on.

A witness told police the driver of the 2003 Toyota Avalon – Devaney – backed up and left the scene, according to the report.

According to court records, Devaney is to appear in court Wednesday, Aug. 7.

Perhaps the most important statistic surrounding vision-robbing injuries is that 90 percent of them are preventable. By simply avoiding dangerous situations and/or wearing protective eyewear, it is possible to avert the vast majority of eye injuries.

Beyond that, you may be surprised to learn that nearly half (44 percent) of eye injuries occur in the home. That is a larger percentage of eye injuries than occurs while playing sports (40 percent). Bricks replace trees in downtown area

By BRENDA SCHORY bschory@shawmedia.com GENEVA – Along the west side of Third Street from Hamilton to State, the sidewalk trees are missing, and the places where they once stood are bricked over.

Taken down because of the ravages of the emerald ash borer, the four missing trees have not been replaced, said Chris Bong, streets and fleets superintendent, because you can’t plant a new tree on top of an old tree’s root ball.

“We took out the ones that had died, and, as it turns out, that is not the best spot for trees,” Bong said. “They don’t do well in that environment, confined and in an area where there is just a lot of concrete, so we enhanced the area with bricks.”

Another area in Geneva where a tree is missing is between the City Barbershop, 218 W. State St., and Good Cents Children, 220 W. State St. That area was cemented over.

One way to enhance those areas would be to put decorative planters to rest on the bricked- or cemented-over areas, but there is no money in the budget for that right now, Bong said.

If the city was to replant trees in some of its sidewalk areas, it would have to be part of a major project, Bong said.

“You’d almost have to redesign the streetscape to put something back in,” Bong said.

“You’d have to dig a new, larg-

er tree pit. Trees downtown, it’s a tough, harsh environment for trees.”

One tree that might work is an ivory silk lilac, which does not grow tall and is used in tight-fitting areas, he said.

“They call it a dwarf tree. It reduces our problems down the line with a lot less trimming because they don’t grow very tall,” Bong said. “We try to put those in wherever we have wires above us.”

City Administrator Mary McKittrick said merchants also have not wanted trees to be replaced because they can block stores’ signage.

“Before the emerald ash borer hit, we were hearing complaints from merchants, ‘These trees are blocking my store sign.’ As each one comes down, for whatever reason … we work with the merchant,” McKittrick said.

“The city has always tried to be business-friendly,” McKitrick said. “So many times, we can’t be flexible. We have to follow the law. So if a merchant prefers it not be there and no law says it has to be there, we work with them.”

The urban tree canopy in the Third Street shopping district is different, McKittrick said, because a lot of the businesses have front yards and wide grassy areas.

Trees planted in pits sunk into concrete pose other difficulties just keeping them alive, McKittrick said, especially when plows push snow laden with salt upon them.

SECOND SIGHT There is a stage during the development of a cataract when farsighted patients may perceive a temporary improvement in their near (reading) vision. This phenomenon, known as “second sight,” occurs as a result of the swelling of the lens nucleus, which serves to alter the angle of refraction to focus light more precisely on the retina. However, as the cataract progresses, second sight is lost and both near and distant vision deteriorate. At this point, of course, changes in eyeglass prescriptions are no longer effective in improving vision and the cataract. GENEVA – Two businesses cited for serving underage during a police compliance check during Swedish Days last month each will pay a $1,000 fine and have their liquor licenses suspended for one 24-hour period.

Liquor license holders Lindsey De Los Santos of Sergio’s Mexican Cantina, 30 W. State St., and Michael Anastasio of Fiora’s Restaurant, 317 S. Third St., agreed to the fines and judgments in a consent order.

Fiora’s will have its license suspended Friday, July 19, and Sergio’s will be suspended Friday, Aug. 23.

The charges and findings were read at a liquor hearing July 15 before the City Council met. Anastasio and De Los Santos acknowledged they were waiving their rights to a hearing.

“I agree with the disposition of these terms of the consent orders and finding of facts and will issue a separate order for each,” Mayor Kevin Burns said, acting in his capacity as the Geneva Liquor Commissioner.

Police do compliance checks during the festival every year, with underaged volunteers who go into the beer gardens and establishments with their real identi-

fication to see whether they will be turned away or allowed in and served.

Of 16 checked June 21, three served two 19-year-olds beer, police said.

After the hearing, De Los Santos said Sergio’s might not offer a beer garden at the next festival because it is not worth the liability because the business’s focus is more of a restaurant than a bar.

“It is pretty harsh, but it is a pretty serious thing for minors to be served,” De Los Santos said of the fine and suspension. “We understand that and we take full responsibility. And we apologize to the city. … I always think things are a blessing in disguise. Maybe this is something that will help us prevent something worse from happening. We’ll be more careful in the future.”

De Los Santos said she and a new server were in a crowded beer garden during the festival when the underage agents were allowed in.

The House bill would sever the link between the food stamp program and the farm subsidies. Traditionally, legislation establishing food stamps has been included in farm bills to create a broad base of support, Schnitkey said.

But this year, House Republicans carved food stamp language from the bill. The move angered House Democrats, who all voted to oppose the bill July 11.

The move also sets up a showdown with Senate Democrats, who included food stamp language in their version.

White and Schnitkey wondered how the two sides will reconcile when members of both chambers meet to negotiate. Further, the two sides must work out such details as means-testing for federal support for crop insurance.

Under current law, all farmers are eligible for federal subsidies equal to 60 percent of their crop insurance premiums. The policies insure farmers against crop loss. However, the Senate bill would step down that support for farmers with annual adjusted gross incomes of more than $750,000.

The House bill does not.

White said he worries such means-testing might prompt wealthy farmers to cut back on crop insurance, raising premiums for smaller farming operations.

“The crop insurance was our mainstay through all of this,” White said. “We’re willing to give up direct payments, but we need that crop insurance.”

Schnitkey said the House bill also would establish permanently the new commodity support programs, “a significant change” from past bills that sunset after five years.

The Illinois Farm Bureau opposed the House bill, saying it “would break up the farm bill coalition, eliminate the incentive to write future farm bills and threaten the future viability of crop insurance.”

The House bill was supported by local U.S. Reps. Randy Hultgren, R-Winfield, and Peter Roskam, R-Wheaton. U.S. Rep. Bill Foster, D-Naperville, opposed the measure.

The attic of the family’s home caught on fire after it was struck by lightning in June 2011. Christina Lechocki said her husband, Jeff, and two children, Elliot, 8, and Abigail, 6, were in the basement waiting out bad weather when they heard an explosive sound, followed by smoke detector alarms.

they say homeowners never should go back into a home to try to rescue a pet. If it’s safe enough for firefighters to enter the home and look for a family pet, they will do their best, Sugar Grove Fire Chief Marty Kunkel said.

He said the fire at the Lechocki home was one of those examples. Because most of the fire was contained in the attic, and Wilson was on the first floor, firefighters were able to rescue him.

“That’s exactly one of those situations,” Kunkel said. “When all your heat and smoke is up [in the attic], conditions to re-enter and look for animals – it’s very easy to do.”

Battalion Chief Shawn Stephens with the Batavia Fire Department said it’s fairly common to encounter pets during fires. He said he’s had to use oxygen masks on two occasions, once for a dog and once for a parrot.

The family got out of the house, but their cat, Wilson, still was inside. When it was safe enough for firefighters to re-enter the home, they found Wilson underneath a couch on the first floor.

“It was very much out of the movies,” Christina Lechocki said. “[The firefighter] was carrying the cat in his arms, Wilson was yowling. He brought him to me, and I took him to the neighbor’s so the kids could hug and pet him and calm him down, as well.”

When there’s a fire, emergency responders work to save not only families, but also family pets whenever they can. Many local fire departments have special equipment, such as oxygen masks, that fit better around a dog’s snout or come in smaller sizes.

Maggie Speaks to bring mash-up music to Kane County Fair

“We do our own live mashups on stage that we can alter each night so that, depending on what we’re feeling with the crowd, we do a mash-up like a DJ would,” he said. “We take the new Daft Punk song and mash it with a KC and the Sunshine Band song. It’s great to see the crowd react.”

But mash-ups aren’t the only types of songs it performs. It’s music roster is filled with hundreds of songs spanning from the 1960s to new music playing on the radio today. The band plays both regular songs, in addition to mash-up-style songs.

The five-member band has been around for 15 years and was founded in Chicago. Aside from Calzaratta’s lead vocals, the band has a lead female vocalist, a bass player, guitar player and drummer.

Calzaretta said the band is accustomed to playing at private and corporate gala events in the Chicago area, as well as in nightclubs and at festivals.

Calzaretta said hearing songs back-toback in the music mash-ups shows just how much music goes through cycles from generation to generation. He said a lot of today’s popular music is reminiscent

of disco-era beats, for example.

The band sometimes performs longer mash-up songs that can last as long as 20 minutes, combining a variety of artists.

He said one song combines the songs “My Prerogative” by Bobby Brown, “Kiss” by Prince, and songs by Young MC, Michael Jackson, Cyndi Lauper and Aretha Franklin.

Another mash-up includes songs by Lady Gaga, Pitbull and The Black Eyed Peas, and teases songs by AC/DC, Lenny Kravitz and Rihanna.

“I think one of the great things about our shows is we really flow from one song to another seamlessly,” Calzaretta said.

“We don’t have a lot of dead air or down time for talking. When people come, they want to hear music.”

Maggie Speaks has played in several countries, including Istanbul, Turkey, Spain and Mexico. Calzaretta, who has a business degree and is a certified public accountant, said Maggie Speaks operates much like an entertainment company.

“I really kind of believed that if you follow your heart, your wallet will catch up to you,” he said. “I really think that having the business degree and background, and being a CPA, really is part of the reason we have built a successful musical company or entertainment company because so many musicians are focused on the art side, and the business side gets neglected.”

Lupita’s Cocina offers gourmet Mexican cooking ST. CHARLES – Chef Roberto Barojas of Lupitas Cocina, a gourmet Mexican restaurant in St. Charles, delivers artfully plated dishes with simple yet smart flavor combinations that sing on the palate.

Fresh is key at Lupita’s, and it’s apparent in the food, drinks and decor. Framed photos of fresh ingredients used in Mexican cuisine hang from the dining room walls, fresh-cut flowers add a touch of elegance to the ambiance and hand-crafted margaritas are concocted with fresh fruit and juices made on the spot.

Straddling the line between casual and business casual, Lupita’s has an inviting dining room boasting charm and vibrancy. White tablecloths are finely draped across surfaces set with red roses in skinny glass vases. Red, folded napkins mirror the wall color that spans the length of the slender dining room. An outdoor patio, which is where most guests were dining about 6:30 p.m. on a recent Thursday evening, was set with ironclad tables fit with a few umbrellas; boxes of fresh, colorful flowers broke up the monotony of the fence circumnavigating the patio; party lights hung from above; and music in Spanish gently trickled from a corner speaker.

For less than $40, my dining companion and I enjoyed an appetizer of chips and guacamole and three orders of tacos (four per order). Portions tend to be on the smaller side, which allow guests to sample multiple items on the menu.

The guacamole ($6) was served in a spherical shape on a stark-white plate with a palm-sized triangular tortilla chip elegantly positioned on top. The creamy dip was made with a colorful combination of avocado chunks, tomatoes, cucumbers, serrano peppers, cilantro and onions laced with virgin olive oil.

Lupita’s serves salads ($8), enchiladas ($13.50), tortas ($8 to $8.50), fajitas and entrées such as Pollo en Mole Negro ($15), with wood-grilled chicken breast served on Oaxaca black mole with garlic mashed potatoes; and Cochinita Pibil ($16), slow-roasted pork marinated with achiote and sour orange juice topped with cheese, pickled red onions and habanero salsa over rice and beans.

The most enticing menu item that stole my attention was the vast array of taco options – eight to be exact. We settled on the Mazatlan Tacos ($9.95), the Acapulco Tacos ($9.95) and the

The Mazatlan Tacos consisted of beer-battered fish fried to a golden crisp with green cabbage, pico de gallo and a creamy aoili chipotle sauce layered on small, flour tortillas. With fish tacos, it’s always about the sauce, and Lupita’s nailed it.

The Acapulco Tacos looked and tasted like we had just ordered them from a beach bar on the Mexican Riviera. The pinkness of the shrimp teamed with hues of marigold, crimson and forest green from the tropical pico de gallo and cilantro created a beautiful semblance of flavors and colors.

The pork in the Pastor Tacos was drenched with adobo sauce and

topped with a thick sliver of pineapple on top of purple onions with salsa verde. This dish also paired salty and sweet components extremely well and was my dining companion’s favorite of the three dishes.

Chef Barojas’ flavor-forward, visually beautiful dishes have me hooked.

I’ll come back soon to try the other

five taco dishes, and I have a feeling he won’t disappoint.

Windmill Whirl 5K a family affair

By JARED BIRCHFIELD editorial@kcchronicle.com BATAVIA – Many of the runners were well-acquainted with their competitors in the Windmill Whirl 5K race July 13 – not because of previous races, but because many of the race entrants were related.

Several families ran the race together or the children ran in the Youth 1-Mile Run held earlier in the day, while the parents competed in the 5K event as part of the Windmill City Festival.

“Isn’t that so great?” race director Rachel Schmitt said.

“I feel that happened because we hosted the youth mile and that gave the opportunity for everyone to come out as a family and enjoy the event.”

Colin Young, a former Naperville resident, took top honors for male runners, completing the 5K course in 17:01.76.

Twelve-year-old Daphne Kolody, who lives in Batavia, came in first among female runners with a time of 20:32.21.

“I did this race a year ago.

Last year, I got 27 minutes and this year I got 20 minutes,” Daphne said. “I think the swimming and the soccer that I have been doing really

helped improve my time.”

Awards were given to the top three overall winners and the top three runners in various age divisions.

Four members of the Kelly family were among the 112 harriers in the 5K race: Paul, his wife, Jessica, and their two sons – Conor, 10, and Liam, 8.

“It was mom’s idea,” Paul Kelly said. “She was going to bring them to the race and I weaseled my way in. We run as a hobby.”

Conor was the first member of the Batavia family to cross the finish line, earning him fourth place in the 1-14

male category, clocking in at 25:58.77. Paul finished less than a second ahead of Liam and earned second place in the 35-39 male division with a time of 27:26.44. Although Jessica was last of the family to finish, her time of 27:56.54 earned first place in the 35-39 female category.

The Silbernagels of St. Charles was another family that competed in the races.

“I just watched my niece and nephew [in the Youth 1-mile]. They both did real well,” Matt Silbernagel said as he cheered his brother, Adam, on during the 5K race. “Kevin

got second overall, and Brooke was fourth in her age group [7-9 females].”

Adam Silbernagel finished fifth overall and first in the 4044 male divison.

“It’s a great course; it’s right along the river with a great view of Batavia,” he said.

“Hopefully, in a year or two we will all run the 5K together.”

Dave Ginsburg (18:41.53) and Brandon Johnson (19:06.45) finished second and third among the male runners.

Elizabeth Ott (21:23.03) took second place in the women’s division, and Christina Marotta (21:41.69) took third.

The transaction is an assignment or transfer of assets not resulting in the issuance of a license to an entity different from the current licensee. This transaction constitutes a change of ownership of a health care facility under 20 ILCS 3960/3. The owner of the site is Delnor Community Hospital.

Delnor Community Hospital, a member of Cadence Health, is acquiring a medical office building ("MOB") located on the campus of Delnor Hospital, in Geneva, Illinois. The MOB is owned jointly by H C Geneva Partners I, LLC, which is a subsidiary of Hammes Company, and Delnor Community Hospital. H C Geneva Partners I, LLC has an 80% ownership share in the building, with the hospital owning the remaining 20%. This Certificate of Exemption application addresses the acquisition of the 80% interest currently held by H C Geneva Partners I, LLC, representing 80,890 square feet.

The MOB consists of approximately 103,500 square feet, the vast majority of which is medical office space. A portion of the building houses a variety of "clinical" services, including pain management, mammography, and cardiac rehabilitation. The transaction will involve the assumption of $14,256,000 of outstanding debt held by H C Geneva Partners I, LLC, and a cash payment of $8,244,000 to H C Geneva Partners I, LLC. An additional $420,000 in fees related to the transaction resulting in a "project cost" of $22,920,000.

The applicants certified that the clinical services at the facility will not change as part of this transaction. The applicants have certified that no adverse action has been taken against the applicants by the federal government, licensing or certifying bodies, or any other agency of the State of Illinois. In addition the applicants certify that a change in ownership will void any permits for projects that have not been completed unless such projects will be completed or altered pursuant to the requirements in 77 lAC 1130.520(f) prior to the effective date of the proposed ownership change. The applicants also certify that the applicants have not already acquired the facility named in this application or entered into an agreement to acquire the facility named in the application unless the contract contains a clause that the transaction is contingent upon approval by the State Board.

The Applicants have prepared a written response addressing the review criteria contained in 77 Ill. Adm. Code 1110.240, 1130.500, 1130.520 and response is available for public review on the premises of the Hospital.
