EDITOR’S NOTEBOOK Kathy Gresey A few months ago, Holly Deitchman, station manager of BATV – or Batavia Access Television – contacted me.

Holly wanted to know whether I would be interested in hosting a new, round-table talk show, a topic she and I had briefly discussed in the past.

The show would touch on relevant, local news issues.

Holly was asking whether I would be the moderator of the show.

I agreed to the request, and planning for the show commenced.

The first episode of “Viewpoint” discusses the downtown Batavia streetscape project. Those appearing on the show include Casey O’Brien, owner of O’Brien’s Pub and Grill in Batavia; Joi Cuartero, executive director of Batavia MainStreet; Jeff Schielke, mayor of Batavia; Bill McGrath, city administrator for Batavia; and Carrie Siebold, a member of the Downtown Streetscape Advisory Committee.

Numerous aspects of the streetscape project were broached during the “Viewpoint” taping. Guests spoke about the specifics of the project and how related issues are being addressed.

They also spoke about what the project will mean for the future of Batavia, and they discussed the arch that recently was erected.

“We received unbelievable support from all of the participants that sat on our first panel,” Holly wrote to me in an email after the show. “Following the taping,

our volunteer crew was excited about being a part of the show, and the panelists were grateful for the opportunity to present their viewpoint. This is a big win for BATV. We look forward to receiving show ideas from the community for future episodes.”

The first episode of “Viewpoint” will air on BATV at noon Friday (Comcast channel 17 or AT&T U-verse channel 99). In addition, the show will air at midnight, 6 a.m., noon and 6 p.m. throughout the weekend. It also will be available On Demand

St. Charles motorcyclist dies in Elgin crash KANE COUNTY CHRONICLE editorial@kcchronicle.com ELGIN – Police are investigating a fatal crash that killed a St. Charles man Friday morning in Elgin.

Elgin police and fire departments responded to the intersection of Randall Road and Highland Avenue shortly before 7 a.m. for a crash involving a Yamaha motorcycle and a passenger vehicle, according to a news release from the Elgin Police Department.

The motorcycle, driven by a 26-year-old St. Charles man, was heading north on Randall Road when it entered the intersection at Highland Avenue, colliding with a car that was turning onto eastbound Highland Avenue from southbound Ran-

dall Road, the release states.

Witnesses told police that the motorcycle was riding the shoulder immediately before the crash and entered the intersection from a nonlane portion of the road before impact, according to the release.

The man riding the motorcycle was taken from the

scene by paramedics and later was pronounced dead at a local hospital.

The man’s name is being withheld pending notification of family members.

The driver of the car, a 44-year-old Woodstock man, was uninjured and released at the scene.

One northbound lane

of Randall Road and all of eastbound Highland Avenue were closed off for about 3½ hours as police investigated the crash.

The Elgin Police Department Traffic Unit is still investigating the crash.

Farmers worry over fate of Farm Bill

By JONATHAN BILYK jbilyk@shawmedia.com Joe White and other farmers in Kane County and elsewhere will be watching Capitol Hill a bit more closely than normal in coming weeks, as federal lawmakers seek to hammer out a new Farm Bill.

“The important thing is to get a Farm Bill, at this point,” said White, of Elburn, president of the Kane County Farm Bureau. “But it will be interesting to see what comes out of all of this.”

In recent weeks, both the U.S. Senate and House have passed versions of a Farm Bill.

The versions have some similarities, eliminating a number of subsidies paid to farmers, said Gary Schnitkey, professor of farm manage-

The House bill would sever the link between the food stamp program and the farm subsidies.

Traditionally, legislation establishing food stamps has been included in farm bills to create a broad base of support, Schnitkey said.

But this year, House Republicans carved food stamp language from the bill.

The move angered House Democrats, who all voted to oppose the bill Thursday.

The move also sets up a showdown with Senate Democrats, who included food stamp

language in their version.

White and Schnitkey wondered how the two sides will reconcile when members of both chambers meet to negotiate.

Further, the two sides must work out such details as means-testing for federal support for crop insurance.

Under current law, all farmers are eligible for federal subsidies equal to 60 percent of their crop insurance premiums.

The policies insure farmers against crop loss. However, the Senate bill would step down that support for farmers with annual adjusted gross incomes of more than $750,000. The House bill does

not.

White said he worries such means-testing might prompt wealthy farmers to cut back on crop insurance, raising premiums for smaller farming operations.

“The crop insurance was our mainstay through all of this,” White said. “We’re willing to give up direct payments, but we need that crop insurance.”

Schnitkey said the House bill also would establish permanently the new commodity support programs, “a significant change” from past bills that sunset after 5 years.

The Illinois Farm Bureau opposed the House bill, saying it “would break up the

farm bill coalition, eliminate the incentive to write future farm bills and threaten the future viability of crop insurance.”

The House bill was supported by local U.S. Reps.

Randy Hultgren, R-Winfield, and Peter Roskam, R-Wheaton. U.S. Rep. Bill Foster, D-Naperville, opposed the measure.

Hultgren said in a prepared statement that the House bill would save $20 billion over 10 years and it “importantly represents a significant and historic shift to a market-based system of federal assistance.”

The two sides are working against a Sept. 30 deadline to enact a Farm Bill.

The 2008 Farm Bill was scheduled to expire, but Congress extended that law until September.

Batavia’s party continues

Pet parade, 5K, live music set at Windmill City Fest

ATAVIA – The Windmill City Festival fun continues today in Batavia with a full schedule of events planned, kicking off with a short race along the Batavia Riverwalk and concluding with an evening of live music.

The festival, which is expected to draw as many as 10,000 people to downtown Batavia through the weekend, kicked off Friday with a carnival, cheer demonstration, beer garden and live bands.

Today’s first event, the WCF Youth 1-Mile Run, starts at 7:30 a.m. and includes racers ages 5 and older. A longer race, the Windmill Whirl, starts at 8:30 a.m. and stretches 5 kilometers along the Fox River Trail. Registration is from 6:30 to 8 a.m., and the race begins on Island Avenue.

Those looking for shopping opportunities can stop by the Batavia Farmers’ Market on River Street from 8 a.m. to noon, or the Craft Show and Flea Market along the Riverwalk from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m.

Registration for the pet parade goes from 9:15 to 9:50 a.m. at the main stage. The parade kicks off at 10 a.m. Prizes will be awarded for best trick, fastest runner, most spots, longest ears, best costume, best kisser, highest jumper and most unusual pet. Registered

The third WCF Wiffleball Home Run Derby starts at 1 p.m. and is free for participants. Several groups, including the Batavia Park District Flipper Demonstration – a demonstration of gymnasts and tumble teams – will take the main stage this afternoon from 12:30 to 2:30 p.m. Cheerleading, Irish dancing and karate demonstrations will take place as well.

A golf challenge tees off at 2 p.m. at Depot Pond for those

age 10 and older. Those interested in participating in the Diaper Derby at 3 p.m., can register at the main stage between 2:30 and 2:45 p.m. Juggler Jason Kollum will be entertaining crowds in the tent

Milky eyes and an opaque cast to the scales indicates that this queen snake, found recently in Ferson Creek in St. Charles, soon will shed its skin. almost blind snake. It turns out it was the snake, but only because I found a branch to grab and stabilize myself.

With one hand thus occupied, I reached underwater with the other and came up with a decidedly agitated queen.

Agitated, but not uncontrollable. Among snakes that live near water, queens actually are relatively mild mannered. Eschewing the bite-bite-bite-then-bite-somemore defensive strategy of their cousins the Nerodia, or water snakes, queen snakes use the more subtle, but equally effective, tactic of squirming about while ejecting feces and musk.

This queen excelled at all three, for about a minute.

Then it calmed down and let us all have a nice, close look.

Adult queen snakes are predominantly olive green and have two prominent yellow stripes, one on either side of their body. The underside is light in color, with two dark stripes running down the middle and two more on either side of the belly.

Math aficionados will notice that the sum of those

stripes is six.

Yet Latin aficionados, and I know you’re out there, will point out that the queen’s species name, septemvittata, would indicate that seven stripes are present. What gives?

As it turns out, young queen snakes (which are not called princesses) have a seventh stripe present along the middle of the back. This stripe fades with age, though, and is gone completely by the time the queen matures.

Despite the feminine-sounding name, queen snakes come in both male and female varieties. I didn’t do a whole lot of checking that day, but I suspect the Ferson Creek queen was a male. Its lean physique and long tail (for its body length) were what I based that assumption on, but to be completely sure we’d have had to do a much more comprehensive examination. And I don’t think either the snake or I was up to that task.

Gender aside, what was notable about this snake was its relative rarity in Kane County. In the field guide

Amphibians and Reptiles of Illinois, author Chris Phillips notes that the queen snake is considered uncommon across most of its range, but locally abundant where habitat is good.

Interestingly, queens are one of only a few snake species that specialize in consuming freshly molted crayfish. Knowing that, can you now guess what other animal the nature camp kids were finding in Ferson Creek that day?

Yep, crayfish. Lots and lots of ’em. That many were

the invasive rusty crayfish is a little sobering, yes, but the fact that a relatively rare species of snake was present, and possibly eating the fiendish rusties, is heartening. It’s also proof that, even in the far western suburbs, it can be good to be queen.

Except for one time, 25 years ago, when I found myself eating ice cream in a supermarket with Prince Andrew and his then-wife Sarah, the Duchess of York, my brushes with royalty have been as rare as robin’s teeth.

Let’s face it; we just don’t have that many crowned heads running around our fair Tri-Cities.

So imagine my surprise a few weeks ago when I – and about a dozen second- and third-graders – came face to face with a real live queen: Regina septemvittata, or queen snake.

No tiara, no scepter, not even a robe. This queen was curled up on a rock in Ferson Creek, not far from the picnic pavilion at Ferson Creek Park in St. Charles.

With all the commotion of the day – 50 or so park district nature campers and staff splashing around in celebration of their Creek Day – it seemed odd that the snake would be positioned in such a prominent spot. In fact, for a moment I wondered whether it was dead. But as I slowly waded toward it, I saw the reason for its nonchalance.

It was getting ready to shed.

If you’ve ever observed a snake in this condition, you’ll know that its eyes take on a hazy, whitish appearance.

For an animal whose eyesight is poor at best, this clouding makes it almost impossible to see anything. But as I moved closer, I could detect a distinct change in the snake’s demeanor. It stiffened up ever so slightly, and its tongue began flicking, tasting the air to gain some sense of its surroundings.

It may not have had good eyesight, but I could see that it could “see” me.

Tottering along as I was, in water up to my knees, on a creek bed of silty rocks and broken concrete, I wasn’t really sure who was going to submerge first – me or the

Liquor hearings set in Geneva

By BRENDA SCHORY bschory@shawmedia.com GENEVA – A liquor commission hearing is scheduled for 6:30 p.m. Monday at Geneva City Hall, 22 S. First St., Geneva, for two of three businesses cited for serving underage patrons at the Swedish Days liquor compliance checks.

The public hearing will be a recitation of the charges, the liquor license holders’ stipulation of the facts and the fines and judgments as determined by Mayor Kevin Burns, in his capacity as Geneva Liquor Commissioner.

Sergio and Lindsey De Los Santos of Sergio’s Mexican Cantina, 30 W. State St., and Michael and Ann Anastasio of Fiora’s Restaurant, 317 S. Third St., are the two who will be heard Monday.

The third license holder, Michael Knuth and Nicholas Mercadante of EvenFlow Music and Spirits, 302 W. State St., will have until a deadline 1:30 p.m. Monday to approve a consent order, Burns said.

Geneva police traditionally will do liquor compliance checks during the Swedish

Days Festival and remind liquor license holders to be vigilant.

On June 21, police checked 16 establishments and beer gardens, sending in two 19-year-olds to order beer.

The legal age to drink in Illinois is 21.

City attorney Charles Radovich said that liquor licensees still are entitled to a full hearing if they decide not to stipulate to the charges.

The citations were the first for Sergio’s and Fiora’s, but the second for EvenFlow in seven months.

The business, which features a restaurant, bar and live music, has been open a year this month.

On Nov. 17, 2012, owner Michael Knuth and his partner, Nicholas Mercadante, were cited for serving alcohol at 4 a.m. in violation of the city’s code.

The liquor code does not allow alcoholic beverages to be served between 2 and 6 a.m. on the licensed premises any day of the week.

They were fined $1,000 and the license was suspended for one day.

By CIARA McCARTHY Slate This week, Illinois became the 50th state to enact concealed-carry legislation. The big picture – it now is perfectly legal to carry a concealed firearm in public everywhere in the country except for Washington, D.C., with varying restrictions on who exactly is allowed to carry and where he or she can do so.

The NRA and other gun supporters have pushed for concealed-carry laws by relying on the “more guns, less crime” hypothesis, which posits that increasing the volume of law-abiding gun owners will make the country safer.

That assumption is impossible to prove right or wrong. That’s because the gun lobby doesn’t want us to be able to disprove it. There is no comprehensive data on concealed-carry laws and how they affect crime. Ladd Everitt, a spokesperson for the Coalition to Stop Gun Violence, notes that many states block public access to the identities of concealed-carry permit holders. According to the Reporters Committee for Freedom of the Press, only one state, Nevada, provides unchallenged public access to the identities of concealed-carry permit holders.

The NRA has fought against disclosing the identities of permit holders because, in its view, that would lead to law-abiding gun owners being treated like criminals. In the absence of data, all we have are conflicting anecdotes about the dangers and benefits of a well-armed citizenry.

On one side, there’s George Zimmerman, who was granted a concealed-carry permit in Florida, which allowed him to legally carry the 9 mm pistol that killed Trayvon Martin. On the other, a student at the Appalachian School of Law killed two school administrators and a student with a handgun in 2002 – according to some accounts, he was stopped from potentially causing greater carnage by fellow students who were armed with handguns, enabling them to tackle the shooter without fear of injury.

In one story, access to a lethal weapon resulted in the death of a 17-year-old. In the other, a rampage was stopped short because responsible citizens were armed. Which narrative is more representative of reality? In the absence of more robust reporting requirements, we can’t say for sure. And in the meantime, lawmakers in every state have passed laws without the slightest idea of the consequences. All we can do now is hope they guessed right.

Chronicle sees success with cameras in the courtroom Not many people see the inside of a courtroom.

But as of Friday that all changed in Kane County, when a camera was used in a local courtroom for the first time, providing additional insight – that beyond the written word – into a court case.

The Kane County Chronicle was able to take still photos of a status hearing for a civil case between the city of St. Charles and Clifford McIlvaine on Friday morning at the Kane County Courthouse in Geneva after it was granted extended media coverage by several parties, including Judge David Akemann, the judge presiding over the case.

When McIlvaine was called in front of the judge, a historic moment took place – photos were taken of a Kane County court proceeding.

The moment was made possible after the Illinois Supreme Court approved a set of policies in May that allowed news outlets to request and win the ability to use cameras – including video cameras – to cover court proceedings in the 16th Judicial Circuit.

Kathryn Seifrid, court media liaison, said Friday morning that allowing cameras in courtrooms would not necessarily change the Kane County court system, rather it would allow more people to see what was transpiring in local courtrooms.

She noted that the first instance of extended media coverage would be a learning experience.

And that has been the case for the Kane County Chronicle, which required guidance from Seifrid when filling out the required paperwork.

In addition, although the Chronicle initially was denied extended media access to the McIlvaine case, that decision was reversed.

Prior to such access being allowed in Kane County, cameras already had been allowed in various other Illinois areas, including DeKalb, DuPage, Kendall, Lake, Boone and Winnebago counties.

Allowing cameras in courtrooms has multiple benefits. It provides enhanced transparency and allows the public to more easily comprehend the judicial process.

Poor choices Regarding the pension issue and the social security issue and the Medicare issue, I am taking the lesson my government is teaching me.

I no longer feel that I need to honor contracts.

English-only on the Fourth, please On the Fourth of July, it was heartbreaking to hear people speaking in Spanish at Pottawatomie Park as the beautiful fireworks were on display. I moved to another spot and smiled as I heard English-speaking kids’ reaction to the colors in the sky.

Unfortunately, it did not last, as another family chose not to speak English. I might just pass on the local fireworks next year or watch them, in English, on TV. Or perhaps, as a country, we could request English-only on the Fourth of July to honor our great nation.

To last week’s caller, “The horror of summer,” I am with you. Don’t think you have a Batavia problem.

Those two-wheeled nuisances are everywhere. Just last week, I had to veer to the right as an oncoming car crossed a center line into my lane because he had to go around those nuts riding side by side at a speed well below the posted speed limit. And how many times do you see them running red lights at stop signs and weaving in and out of stopped traffic so they can get in front everybody else?

Finally, I believe there was a bicyclist killed a couple of weeks ago in our area.

I’m surprised there aren’t more.

Fortunately for them, many of us in vehicles are alert to their presence and their poor cycling habits. Looking forward to winter.

St. Charles, Phillip Luetkehans, said the city’s contractor has completed the home’s roof, installed a stairwell landing, covered some exposed wiring and has done some foundation work. He said some outside contractors are working to complete the brick flashing around the home’s doors and windows.

“We’ve made a lot of progress in the last two months,” he said after the hearing. “The roof is now complete. The rate [McIlvaine] was going, it

would have taken him a year.”

Luetkehans addressed some of the damages before Judge David Akemann, saying that the city’s contractor did not properly secure a tarp to McIlvaine’s garage and solarium while the roof was being repaired. A storm on Monday flooded those areas in the home, causing damage to equipment and materials stored there, according to McIlvaine’s motions.

GENEVA – Contractors are months into making court-ordered repairs on Clifford McIlvaine’s home, but the St. Charles resident filed new motions before a judge Friday morning, alleging that contractors caused more damage to his home in the process and have made some unnecessary changes.

The city sued McIlvaine in 2010, pushing him to finish a home repair project that was started more than 30 years ago. Kane County Judge David Akemann recently allowed the city of St. Charles to proceed with repairing McIlvaine’s property at 605 Prairie St., St. Charles.

Friday’s hearing was particularly notable, because it marked the first time in which cameras were used in a Kane County courtroom. The Illinois Supreme Court in May approved a pilot program allowing Kane County to become the 29th county in the state to permit cameras in courtrooms.

Luetkehans said the staircase was installed for safety reasons because the second-floor room has no means of ingress or egress.

In a third motion, McIlvaine said he “suffered years worth of loss of money in labor and materials” because the city has not allowed him to install the foam and steel roof that he had obtained a permit for. He also said he will suffer years worth of money losses because the roof is not insulated.

Luetkehans said Friday was the first time he had seen McIlvaine’s latest motions. He plans to file a response on behalf of the city by Aug. 6, and McIlvaine has until Aug. 16 to file a reply. The two parties are scheduled to meet again in court for another hearing Aug. 28.

District 304 names fired employees Three employees remain unnamed in records

By BRENDA SCHORY bschory@shawmedia.com GENEVA – Geneva School District 304 released the name of an employee the board recommended to be dismissed June 24 following an open records request.

The employee was identified as Terrie Harrington, a kindergarten instructional assistant at Heartland Elementary School.

The school board met in closed session for 90 minutes that night for an employee dismissal hearing, officials said, then voted to recommend dismissal, only identifying the person as “Employee A,” an apparent violation of the state’s Open Meetings Act. Officials later refused to name the employee, prompting the Kane County Chronicle to file a Freedom of Information Act request seeking that name, as well as names of other employees the board recommended for dismissal since Jan. 1, 2010, to the present.

In its response, the district provided the names of 342 employees released from employment for various reasons, including a reduction in force, general layoff and the elimination of the employee’s position.

All but three already were named in the board packets of various school board meetings, as well as in the minutes of those meetings, records show. The three unnamed employees’ dismissal dates correlate with those who were recommended for dismissal without being named, following a closed session, records show.

In addition to Harrington, the district also released the names of Deborah Regelbrugge, a special education assistant at the preschool, who was fired April 22, and Daniel Benjamin, a maintenance worker at Geneva Middle School South, who was fired Nov. 28, 2012.

session for employee disciplinary action, the board voted in open session “based upon the evidence presented to the Board of Education in executive session, to terminate the employment of ‘Employee A,’ effective April 22, 2013,” without naming the employee.

According to the minutes of the Nov. 26, 2012, school board meeting, following a closed session for employee disciplinary action, the board voted in open session “to accept the administrative recommendation regarding the dismissal of a specific employee of the public body, effective immediately,” without naming the employee.

ENEVA – Michael Hamann wears a figurative badge of honor for the sequence that stalled his first summer of professional baseball.

“It was probably the best defensive play that I’ve ever made,” the Cougars’ righthander said.

Pitching in relief for Short-A Boise in the parent Cubs’ system in July 2012, Hamann darted from the mound and sprawled headlong to snare a popped-up bunt.

Thanking adrenaline, he doubled a runner off second base after that and remained in the game to complete a scoreless inning.

A bone bruise and ankle sprain hobbled Hamann as he headed to the dugout, but he completed the subsequent rehab in a few weeks and felt able to finish the season. The Cubs felt otherwise, being cautious and shutting him down.

It has all left Hamann itching to catch up.

Of course, waiting accompanies Hamann’s baseball experience these days. A weekend starter for three seasons at Toledo, Hamann made a team-high 14 starts for the Rockets in 2012 before the Cubs drafted him as a junior in the 16th round.

“I was used to being able to prep myself before a game and know every Friday or Saturday, whenever it was, that I was going to pitch,” Hamann said. “The bullpen’s a little bit different, but since last year I’ve adapted pretty quickly, I think.”

Hamann, 22, speaks with confidence after waiting nearly a year to show his stuff again. He began the season in extended spring training and remained there until Boise’s season opened in mid-June.

Cougars reliever Michael Hamann, a 12th-round pick of the parent Cubs last season, made six scoreless appearances with Short-A Boise last month before getting called up to the Cougars.

The Cubs promoted him two weeks later after Hamann recorded 7⅔ scoreless innings over six appearances, striking out nine and recording three saves.

Cougars manager Mark Johnson, who guided Boise to the Northwest League Championship Series in 2012, was especially excited to see Hamann when he joined the club in Wisconsin.

“If he wouldn’t have done that [with his ankle],” Johnson said, “he would have been with us for the playoffs

and would have played a huge part in it.”

The Cougars, 4-15 in the second half entering Friday, still are searching for the jolt they hope propels them toward a postseason spot.

Seeing more of Hamann, the team’s de facto closer, would seem to suggest the team is faring better.

While Hamann feels secure in his stamina, he also understands he and teammates are in the game of player development.

He went six days between his first and second outings

as a Cougar but showed no signs of rust, combining for 2⅓ innings of scoreless ball while relying on his slider to record two strikeouts.

A boyhood Cleveland Indians fan growing up in Port Clinton, Ohio, Hamann opted for college even after Cleveland drafted him out of high school in the 24th round in 2009. He was lanky then and remains so now – his Twitter handle of @ hamann_cheese notwithstanding.

The Cougars list Hamann at 6-foot-3 and 165 pounds, but he has since eclipsed 180 and is pushing to add more muscle.

Pitching in DeKalb against Northern Illinois on a Sunday in late April 2012, Hamann worked seven strong innings to get the win and secure a series sweep.

Less than two months later, he was a Cubs farmhand, and immediately researched the organization and its minor league stops. Kane County stood out for its fan base and location.

GENEVA – Cougars fans acquainted themselves with the club’s patriotic red, white and blue uniforms during an Independence Day weekend homestand.

With the organization hosting the Team USA collegiate national team in two games at Fifth Third Bank Ballpark next week, look for that color scheme to reign again.

Team USA will oppose the Crystal Lake Cardinals of the Metropolitan CBL of Illinois at 6:30 p.m. Monday before facing a group of the summer league’s all-stars at 1 p.m.

Tuesday. Cougars officials plan to assign the standard Midwest League treatment to the wood bat games, operating the scoreboard, public address and concessions as usual.

“We’ve never really had this opportunity to host a couple of games like this, and we’re hoping that we

can build a relationship with these people and continue into the future,” Cougars general manager Curtis Haug said. “I think it’s something that can really become interesting when you bring in Curtis Haug maybe teams from Japan or China or Cuba and have some games out here. That’ll be real interesting for the community to Jeff Holm see.”

Team USA brass contacted the Cougars earlier this summer about bringing the games to Geneva. The events promise a full week of action at the ballpark, as the Cougars are set to return for a sixgame homestand beginning Wednesday.

SOUTH BEND, Ind. – In a backand-forth battle Friday night at Coveleski Regional Stadium, the Cougars took a 5-4 loss to the South Bend Silver Hawks and suffered a three-game sweep.

Justin Amlung (3-4) relieved Rosario but coughed up the 4-3 lead. Rudy Flores smacked an opposite-field, two-run homer to put South Bend ahead by the final margin in the seventh.

St. Charles North product Carl Formento earned Midwest Conference Pitcher of the Week and Midwest Conference Performer of the Week honors during his decorated, freshman season at Division-III Carroll University (Wis.). The right-hander’s strong season was highlighted by a complete-game win in March in a game played at the Metrodome in Minneapolis.

Formento, who has pitched legion ball part-time this summer for St. Charles Post 342 when he hasn’t been teaching his 12-year-old brother, Nathan, tricks of the trade, spoke with Kane County Chronicle sports editor Jay Schwab for this week’s Weekend Chitchat, touching base on pitching in a dome, his summer regimen and a favorite family getaway. The following is an edited transcript:

How involved have you been with the legion team?

I’ve been trying to make as many games as I can.

Since my birthday is past the deadline for the [district] games I’ve only been able to really make nonconference, weekend tournaments, so I’ve

been trying to make as many of those as I can. I haven’t really started a lot, pitching.

They’ve been giving some of the younger guys who are actually on the full-time roster a chance to start but I’ve been getting innings in relief and this last weekend I made a start, so that was some good experience.

What other kind of summer training do you have going?

Other than the legion, I’ve been just trying to focus on lifting and doing some cardio, staying in shape, keeping may arm in shape. I’m going to be starting up my college program my coach just sent out for strength and conditioning, plus core workouts and long-toss programs to stay in shape and be ready come fall when next semester starts since we start right away with baseball. … If you take a while off from throwing, you’re rusty.

What was it like pitching in the Metrodome?

That was a lot of fun.

Obviously, that was the first indoor baseball facility I’ve ever played a game in. It was

The team we played there was Concordia-Moorhead, I think they’re from right around the area there. They were a good team. I started the second game of the first weekend we played there. … The lighting was kind of weird for popups and stuff. You just have to get used to that quick but other than that, it was a good experience.

Are you thinking college is going to be the end for baseball or do you have any aspirations of trying to keep going beyond?

As of now, I’m just kind of going with the college, just trying to do the best I can in college, and who knows how it will end up after that that but as of now I’m just kind of focusing on school and being grateful I’m able to keep playing and keep on going with baseball because there’s going to be one day I’m not able to play again, and I’ll

have to hang up the glove.

What are your favorite summer pastimes aside from baseball, when you’re not playing?

Yeah, that’s the key, when I’m not playing, which is most of the time. Ever since I was little, we have a little lake house on Whitewater Lake, so we like to go there as much as we can on the weekend when I’m not playing baseball. My little brother is in travel baseball now so he’s probably been more involved with baseball than I have [this summer], plus I have a younger sister, who is 8, in soccer and softball. …

My family really likes to go up to lake house for boating and swimming and what-not but we kind of find time [late in the summer] when all the summer sports come to an end.

What kind of impact did [veteran St. Charles North pitching coach Terry Ayers] have on you?

Coach Ayers, with me being a pitcher, it was definitely a lot of good advice, tips and strategies for not only on the field but off the

In the second, a late conflict put the diamonds at both St. Charles high schools out of play.

St. Charles (20-7-1) went 6-1-1 in conference play. Elgin Post 57, which was 7-1 in the conference, is the top seed.

Kowalski said a few players – including St. Charles North’s Jack Dennis, Luke Johansmeier and Mitch Hurst – will continue pulling double duty next week, suiting up both for their high school teams in the postseason Lawler tournament as well as for Post 342.

St. Charles East could become a rather familiar setting for the trio, as it also hosts a Lawler regional.

Along with its current high school players, St. Charles is stocked with several recent graduates who have played an equally vital role in this summer’s surge.

“As our record shows, we’ve got a pretty talented team,” Kowalski said, “so it’s just a matter of keeping them around to play.”

Renner wins junior amateur golf tourney GENEVA – St. Viator senior Robert Renner of Lake Barrington sealed a one-stroke victory Friday at the three-day IJGA-CDGA Junior Amateur at Mill Creek Golf Club.

Renner carded a 2-over-par 73 in his final round to finish with a 3-over 216.

Ethan Farnam of Crystal Lake closed with a final-round 71 to finish one stroke off the lead in second place.

Top pick Bryant eager to help

They were happy tears as the Cubs introduced Bryant, their first-round draft pick, at Wrigley Field before Friday’s game against the Cardinals. Susie Bryant said it was hard to put into words what it meant to watch her youngest son put on a Cubs jersey.

Bryant, who received a $6.7 million signing bonus, immediately becomes one of the Cubs’ top prospects, joining a talented group of position players. Friday was the deadline to sign their draft picks, and the Cubs ultimately signed 24, including 19 of their first 20.

“All I can say is I plan to go out there and do my best and help any team I plan on win a game, win a lot of games,” Bryant said. “I’m going to work hard – continue to get better each and every day on the field and off the field.”

Bryant also spent time on the field during the Cubs’ batting practice, which included stretching with the team and fielding some ground balls at third.

“He’s a very good kid, as we knew,” president of baseball operations Theo Epstein said. “He’s very polished and handled what could be an intimidating day with a lot of poise. Most importantly, it’s really cool to see how happy the family is. … That’s what it’s all about. It’s a long journey to become a professional, and he deserves a special day. Now, it’s the start of a special journey to get where he wants to be.”

Bryant isn’t worried about switching to wood bats and how that may affect his power. Since composite bats were introduced in the college game two years ago, they more closely resemble wood bats than the notorious ping-

ing aluminum bats that made it difficult to access a player’s true power.

Bryant will head out to Arizona to play in the Rookie League and shake of the rust from the layoff after his college season at the University of San Diego ended.

Once he gets in some work at Mesa, Bryant will head to Class-A (Short Season) Boise. Because Bryant has three years of college baseball experience, he will likely get an opportunity to move up from Boise before the season ends.

While most players head to Class-A Kane County after Boise, Bryant could bypass the Cougars and head straight to Class-A Advanced Daytona.

Fellow prospect Jeimer Candelario, 19, is Kane County’s starting third baseman, and the Cubs would be hesitant to alter Candelario’s player development plan, forcing him to change positions or promote him to Daytona before he’s ready. But Bryant isn’t worried about how quickly he will reach Wrigley, only focused on getting back out on the field.

nings or games to take the ball again.

“I just prepare myself for the bullpen every day to be ready,” he said. “I feel my arm is able to bounce back day after day, so I always have my cleats on, and once it gets toward the end of the game, I’m getting ready, prepared.”

If he has to dive for a bunt again, so be it. So much of baseball is about repitition, and Hamann could get used to the active side of that equation.

That’s right, MacKenzie was in that position Friday after winning a fan contest for a video he entered displaying his passion for lacrosse.

Representing Team Eclipse, MacKenzie picked midfielder Greg Gurenlian of the New York Lizards, one of MacKenzie’s favorite MLL teams.

Guilford, Conn., high-schooler Frank Ranfone was the other captain in the event at Memorial Stadium, picking for Team Supernova.

Both MacKenzie and Ranfone are granted full access for today’s MLL All-Star game (6 p.m., ESPN2), and will be on the sidelines wearing personalized team jerseys.

MacKenzie, a North midfielder who also coaches at Tri-Cities -based River City Lacrosse, took

up the sport in seventh grade.

“I’m really excited to do this, and it’s definitely a once in a lifetime opportunity,” MacKenzie told the Chronicle this week. “Not a lot of people who are lacrosse fans get to go to the All-Star game for free and be on the field with these great players.”

Bridge Program gets athletes acclimated to university life

The NIU Athletics Bridge Program is going strong, getting student-athletes ahead in their classes while helping them ease into college life.

This summer, the program offers three courses: English 103, Kinesiology & Physical Education 100 and Communications 100.

Most of the student-athletes taking part in the program are football players, but there are also three menâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s and four womenâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s basketball players. The majority came because of suggestions from coaches, but they realize the importance of getting ahead. â&#x20AC;&#x153;The coaches suggested it, and I kind of took it from there,â&#x20AC;? said Chad Beebe, a wide receiver from Aurora Christian. â&#x20AC;&#x153;I just knew it would be a good way to get school going and get some credit hours in before the fall semester. Being able to start out with just two classes will help a lot.â&#x20AC;?

Each class runs for two days a week, either Monday and Wednesday or Tuesday and Thursday, giving the student-athletes a lot of time outside the classroom.

In order to help them better adapt to college, the academic coordinators set up study tables and tutoring sessions. The tutors are student workers, graduate students and DeKalb School District faculty.

Outside of academics, a lot of time is spent working out.

NCAA rules prohibit football players from practicing with coaches at this time, but they have weightlifting sessions and 7-on-7 workouts, or, as academic coordinator John Bruno said, â&#x20AC;&#x153;Theyâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;re playing a lot of video games, Iâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;m sure.â&#x20AC;?

When mother calls, nature beckons Noah and his buddies recently returned from a once-ina-lifetime fishing trip to Northern Ontario. They enjoyed gorgeous views, rustic quarters, cleaning and frying fresh fish on a nearby island every day for lunch, moose-sightings and card-playing during their down-time.

Sounds like bliss, doesn’t it?

It was, until nature called. And I don’t mean “Mother Nature” and that potentially terrifying trek to the outhouse during the wee hours.

No, I mean “mother” – nature. Yes, I finally caved and made the call. The “did you arrive alive, or were you abducted by aliens – or worse?” call.

The boys didn’t travel alone, of course. They were very generously and expertly chaperoned by one boy’s dad and his uncle. But when, late one night, another mom texted

TALES FROM THE MOTHERHOOD Jennifer DuBose to see if I’d heard anything from Noah (he’d last texted early that morning to say that they were leaving their hotel in Canada for the airport, where they would board a puddle-jumper bound for camp), my mind did the mom-thing.

You know, the “how well do I really know these guys (their chaperones)?” And the “What have I done?” thing. That got old quickly.

I knew they wouldn’t have cell reception at camp but also knew that none of us moms would sleep a wink ’til we heard that they’d made it, so yes, at 10:15 p.m. I finally

caved, dug up the camp’s phone number, took one for the team and made the call.

Yes, I am that mom.

John, the owner of the camp, assured me that they were fine. And I assured him I wouldn’t call again.

Someone probably would have, eventually, gotten around to dropping us a line.

By Noah’s account, that’s actually what happened.

Apparently coincidentally, mere moments after I phoned the camp, he e-mailed from his phone: “Hey, I can’t text anyone but today I caught nine fish.

Six pike and one walleye. I had the biggest fish with a fivepound, 30-inch pike.”

A chorus of angels sang in my heart. I’m not sure what pleased me more, that I found him alive in the wilderness or that he was happy.

But I rather like my version of the story.

I decided that John, a third-generation owner of the camp, has dealt with worried wives and mothers over the years. I figured he worried I’d be on the next puddle-jumper into camp – let alone flying the darned thing myself – if he didn’t high-tail it over to Noah’s cabin and light a fire under him to contact me.

The thought still makes me giggle. We’d all joked about what the boys might encounter on their trip. They think bears are scary? Try a psychotic-with-worry mom. (They don’t call us Mama-bears for nothing, do they, ladies?)

Noah e-mailed me a few more times that week; brief replies to my annoying mom queries: “Wearing sunscreen?

Drinking water?”

Finally I said, “Listen,

you gotta gimme more than one- word answers so I don’t suspect you’ve been abducted by someone pretending to be you, OK?” I also told him that my phone’s screen shattered one morning as we walked Jake, after I dropped it onto Holly’s foot and it bounced onto the sidewalk.

“Get the GS4,” was all he said, in his next e-mail.

That one line told me everything I needed to know. I had no doubt it was my tech-savvy son.

Like I said, I am that mom.

Poor Noah, he’s probably still being teased about that call. I just hope he got a picture of that fish.

Learning to Grow: Enjoying the garden by moonlight

By SARAH MARCHESCHI editorial@kcchronicle.com As midsummer arrives, days are longer, and the mercury finally soars, the hours we spend in the garden while the sun beats down tend to get shorter, and beg to be punctuated a bit more frequently by tall, icy libations in the shade.

It’s simply too hot for weeding, hoeing, and transplanting, and even reclining on a chaise longue can be taxing when temperatures rise. But if I know you gardeners, and I think I do, all that work you’ve done planning pleasing vistas and vignettes mustn’t be for naught. ’Tis the season to revel in our gardens – and not just from the kitchen window.

Enter the moon garden. The addition of a few fragrant, night blooming specimens will help you reclaim your yard, and delight in a landscape that comes to life as the sunshine fades. And on warm

summer nights, when the moon bathes everything in its silvery light, a cool drink on a porch swing will suddenly seem an elegant affair.

Probably my favorite of the night bloomers is the aptly named moonflower, or Ipomoea alba. Unfurling at dusk, the large white trumpet shaped blossoms remain open until sunrise against a lush backdrop of heart-shaped leaves, with some giving off an enchanting fragrance as well.

Like their relative the morning glory (both are members of the genus Ipomoea), moonflower vines can be started easily from seeds, and once they are established, growth is rapid.

Site them together near an arbor or trellis, and enjoy the colorful morning glories by day, and as they fade by late afternoon, the moonflowers open up just in time to take their place.

Garden Conservancy to host Open Days Program KANE COUNTY CHRONICLE editorial@kcchronicle.com The Garden Conservancy will host its Open Days Program garden tours in Elburn and West Chicago on July 21.

The public is invited to explore private gardens Hummer Haven in Elburn and The Gardens at Ball in West Chicago – the trial grounds for the Ball Horticultural Company.

The viewings will take place from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m.

Visitors may begin the tour at either location. The Gardens at Ball is located at 622 Town Road in West Chicago; and Hummer Haven is located at 43W712 Willow Creek Drive in Elburn.

The Garden Conservancy’s Open Days Program has been allowing public viewings of private gardens in the U.S. since 1995. The Garden Conservancy’s 2013 season features more than 300 gardens in 18 states.

Hummer Haven features three landscaped ponds with waterfalls and plantings that cater to wildlife feeding and habitat.

Nicotiana alatas emit strong fragrance at night • GARDEN Continued from page 27 Nicotiana alata is another perfect choice for the nighttime garden. Grown as an annual in our cool climate, this plant can reach 3-5 feet tall, and blooms until frost. Its scent is barely noticeable during daylight hours, but few blossoms can match the powerful fragrance Nicotiana emits as evening falls, and its pale, nearly white flowers almost appear to shimmer or glow in the moonlight.

As their name would suggest, the flowers on four o’clocks, or Mirabilis jalapa, open in late afternoon and bloom until morning. Sweetly fragrant, like many other night bloomers, they are attractive to hummingbirds and moths, and their range of colors – purple, yellow, red – can present a pleasing contrast to the primarily light colored palette of the evening flower garden.

Angel’s Trumpet Datura (Datura meteloides) is another richly scented selection for the moon garden. Its shrublike growth habit, elegant petals, and intoxicating fragrance make it a good choice for displaying in pots on the patio or as a focal point in the garden.

But beware – this plant’s exotic mystery isn’t just for show. The leaves, flowers, and seeds of Datura meteloides are all highly toxic, and should never be ingested by humans or animals.

After planning and planting your moon garden, pull up a bench, a swing, or a tattered old blanket, and enjoy it. Drink in the perfume that drifts on the evening breeze and marvel at those pale ephemeral blossoms that will seem to float, unmoored in the landscape, while their darker foliage fades into the background as night falls.

In March of 1915, Midwestern girl Ginny King, wrote to her boyfriend F. Scott Fitzgerald, likely lamenting another long, cold Chicago winter.

“Oh Scott why aren’t we somewhere else tonight? Why aren’t we at a dance in summer now with a full moon, a big lovely garden and soft music in the distance?”

Nearly one hundred years have passed since that night, and even over the course of a century, I think we have found little to contend with the magic of a pretty garden, in the summer, in the moonlight.

‘Byzantium’ has no life to it

By ED SYMKUS More Content Now Two decades ago, Irish director Neil Jordan got into the supernatural bloodsucker game by sharpening the teeth of Tom Cruise, Brad Pitt and a then very young Kirsten Dunst for the moody and stylized “Interview with the Vampire.” He returns to the genre with “Byzantium,” a less satisfying, more convoluted take on characters who are members of the living dead.

Making non-linear use of flashbacks with its contemporary story, we get a tale of a strained mother-daughter relationship. Mom is Clara (the alluring Gemma Arterton, who played Strawberry Fields in “Quantum of Solace”). Daughter is 16-year-old Eleanor (the bland Saoirse Ronan, who has so far only been effective in “Hanna”).

As a fan of classic horror, I will admit that having a mom-daughter vampire duet, who must continually travel from town to town, leaving a trail of blooddrained bodies behind them, is a pretty cool idea. But the script by Moira Buffini (who wrote the terrific 2011 “Jane Eyre” adaptation), based on her own play, “A Vampire Story,” never takes off, never rises above an uncomfortable flatness.

Many small pieces of the story give it some promise. Clara wears a self-assured look, makes her living as a lap-dancing prostitute, likes to chat, and can be very sympathetic to sad, lonely men.

She also happens to be a talented practitioner of decapitation. She aggressively hunts down victims when thirst gets to her. Eleanor is a solitude-loving pianist (Ronan does a nice job actually playing a difficult piece of Beethoven) who walks around with a glum, world-weary look. She manages to find already spilled blood for sustenance.

They’ve been at this lifestyle for a long time, for a couple of centuries, and pieces of their tragic lives are revealed in those flashbacks. One explains why Eleanor is doomed to always think about her past; another tells of how Clara was forced into sexual servitude. Most of these sequences add layers onto the film’s main storyline, when what it really needs is some streamlining.

On an interesting note, the hotel allows the film to offer up some standard vampire lore. Clara and Eleanor must stand outside of the place until they’re actually invited to come in by the owner.

Oddly, other equally important pieces of vampire business are ignored. For instance, Clara and Eleanor can and do walk around outdoors in the daylight hours, suffering no ill

effects.

It’s safe to say that the film’s central motif revolves around how to live with a terrible secret, and at the same time explore the give and take, up and down relationship that mothers and daughters deal with in real life. But there’s far too much mood and not nearly enough substance. And with complications building up right to the end, the film just gets too involved for its own good, especially when, well into it, there’s a plot switch that requires viewers to forget a great deal of what they’ve learned about certain characters, then start anew.

Suffice it to say that if you’re looking for a gory action film about neck-biting creatures, this isn’t for you. This is a slow-moving, dreary art-house vampire film.

Torn meniscus doesn’t always require treatment Dear Doctor K: I’m 72 years old.

I’ve had left knee pain on and off for several months. My doctor sent me for an MRI of both knees.

It showed “mild to moderate osteoarthritis” in both knees and a torn meniscus in my right knee, which feels fine. Do I need to do anything about the torn meniscus in my “good” knee?

Dear Reader: You ask an interesting question. Let’s start with some background information. The meniscus is a crescent-shaped disk of fibrous tissue and cartilage. Each knee has two menisci located between the thighbone (femur) and the lower leg bone (tibia).

The menisci act as shock absorbers. They protect the other cartilage tissue that covers the end portions of the femur and tibia. The kind of injury most likely to tear a meniscus is a twisting injury of the knee. Often this occurs during sports.

In older people, however, the meniscus becomes more prone to injury; it can tear for no apparent reason. Meniscal tears are more common with increasing age.

When a meniscus tears, you sometimes know it. There’s a

ASK DOCTOR K Anthony L. Komaroff “pop” or a twinge of discomfort in the knee. But sometimes there are no symptoms when a meniscus gets torn.

After a meniscus tears, you can have different symptoms.

Some of my patients with a torn meniscus suddenly have trouble kneeling or squatting: It hurts when they do it, and it really hurts when they try to stand up.

Other patients report that the knee sometimes “locks” or “catches” just during walking.

Sometimes they say the knee will just give out on them. Sometimes it’s even more subtle. They just have the impression that something is wrong in the knee, that it’s not operating properly.

If a meniscus gets badly torn, it provides less protection to the ends of the bones. This can lead to osteoarthritis, as was diagnosed on your magnetic resonance imaging scan (MRI).

Osteoarthritis is the most common form of arthritis.

Should you have treatment on your “good” knee? Surprisingly, meniscal tears are nearly as common in people who have no knee pain as in those with pain.

MRIs are so sensitive that they often detect abnormalities that are not causing any problems to the patient.

Doctors should always treat patients, not X-rays or MRIs. Since your right knee feels fine, there is no need to treat the meniscal tear.

If you had pain – or if you develop pain – the decision would be more difficult. It would be hard to know if your pain was caused by the arthritis, the tear or both.

If your symptoms were mild, it would probably be best to treat the arthritis first. If your symptoms got worse, you could consider meniscus surgery, which can help relieve the pain.

That’s the long answer to your question. Here’s the short version: If it ain’t broke, but it ain’t hurting, don’t fix it.

She couldn’t date until she was 16, and I’m the first guy she has gone out with. We met at a mutual friend’s birthday party. I’ve taken her out seven times, and all of our dates have been super. We have a lot of things in common, especially that we are both Chicago White Sox fans surrounded by a large group of Cubs fans. Besides watching suspense movies, we both like to bowl. She is a better bowler than I am, but I’m gaining on her.

Mindy is an only child, and her parents are very strict with her. I feel very uncomfortable when I’m near him. Thank goodness her mother is a friendly and pleasant lady.

Some advertisements make interesting claims. For example, have you seen the one for a golf range-finder that promises you will play better if you use it? Why will knowing the exact distance to the pin improve your swing? Yes, it is nice to feel confident that you are using the right club, but you must still execute the shot correctly.

At the bridge table, you can count winners and losers, but you must still execute the trick sequence correctly.

In today’s deal, how should South try to make six hearts after West leads the club queen?

North responded with a game-invitational limit raise.

South bid what he hoped he could make.

Declarer has a spade loser and an uncertain trump suit.

Obviously, after winning trick one with his club ace, the honor from the shorter side first, South should cash his heart ace to find out that situation. If the king drops, everything is easy-peasy.

If an opponent discards, the contract is hopeless. Here, though, both opponents follow, but the king does not put in an appearance. How can declarer avoid losing a spade trick as well?

There is only one chance – the defender with the heart king is short in spades. South should cash his two top diamonds, cash his spade ace, lead to dummy’s spade king, take the club king, and ruff the third club. With the partial elimination complete, declarer leads a trump. Here, West must return a minor-suit card. Declarer ruffs on the board and sluffs his remaining spade.

If you are good, you will get lucky – in bridge and golf.
