Bridge naming stuns Geneva park worker

By BRENDA SCHORY bschory@shawmedia.com GENEVA – At the ribbon-cutting and dedication ceremony for the rebuilt Island Park North Bridge on June 30, Larry Gabriel, the Geneva Park District superintendent of parks and properties, was doing business as usual – getting everything ready.

“I had gone down there with my two foremen, and we were setting up a canopy and getting the red ribbon staged and cleaning up,” Gabriel said. “A few guests were going to stop by, and Geneva Park District Executive Director Sheavoun Lambillotte started reading off the names of people included in the project. She got down to my name and … and I was waiting for her to move on.”

Gabriel said he recalled looking at Lambillotte and wondering, “Why do you keep talking about me?”

And then Lambillotte got to the part about the park commissioners deciding to name the bridge the Larry Gabriel Bridge in recognition of his supervision of this monumental project, as well as his 30-plus years of dedication to the Geneva Park District “I was stunned. Flabbergasted. Completely taken aback,” Gabriel said. “To my good fortune, I was not asked to step up and speak.”

Replacing the bridge that was built in 1931 was no small undertaking. The park district received a $729,110 Federal Transportation Enhancement Grant in 2010, which paid for 80 percent of the project, after structural testing confirmed it no longer was safe and needed to be replaced.

The bridge is considered a vital link to more than 100 miles of the Fox River Trail network, as well as the juncture of the trail and the Illinois Prairie Path, officials said.

The project officially began in 2004 – with engineering consultants studying the bridge, and the grant consultant applying for funds. The actual construction began late last spring and was completed by October, with Gabriel overseeing the project every step of the way from start to finish.

Gabriel, 55, of Batavia, said he will be an employee of the park district for 34 years on Sept. 3. He started in 1979 as a horticulturist, then was appointed to foreman at Peck Farm Park and then in 2001 was promoted to superintendent when Don Forni retired.

Gabriel’s first responsibility at the park district was maintaining the gardens in front of the now-closed Mill Race Inn. “All the times I looked at that particular bridge, when I was planting flowers or doing other maintenance work – to think that I would someday be involved in rebuilding that en-

tire structure,” Gabriel said.

“Think of how far-fetched that sounds. And being down there on Saturday, and the bridge being named after me – that is as close to surreal as you could get.”

Gabriel noted that it was a good thing Geneva Park District names significant facilities after longtime devoted employees while they still are alive. Among those are the Don Forni Park, the Kay Lovett Park, Stan Esping Park and Stephen D. Persinger Recreation Center.

Lambillotte said Gabriel’s service of more than three decades is worthy of accolades in itself. But he was integral to the bridge project, she said, attending every city meeting, public meeting, construction meeting and all the meetings that followed to see the project through.

“We thought it was a good opportunity, not only for completing that one project, but

also for his 30 years working for the park district,” Lambillotte said. “Neither Steve, nor I, could have asked for an employee as devoted as Larry.”

Gabriel still is getting used to the idea that the bridge will bear his name on two plaques, one on each end.

“This is a monumental milestone in my career,” Gabriel said. “I had no idea this would happen. My family knew. I looked around and wondered, ‘Why are all these people here?’ A couple of my friends, a few of my family members, my wife. She had been part of this three- to four-month process of putting this all together behind the scenes.”

It must have been a tough secret to keep, he said.

“My wife said it was absolutely agonizing at times, she was so worried she would slip up,” Gabriel said. “The office staff did the same thing. But I was absolutely clueless.”

Nature educator Rana Mills said the two-hour program with stations will be offered every Saturday from noon to 2 p.m. where families can come and experience some hands-on nature activities to do together.

“The coyotes caught him somehow and chewed him up,” Mills said. “I can’t imagine how they would get an owl that size … somehow they managed to surprise him. I guess the wing’s not very meaty, so they left that for us.”

Tina and Bryan Schertzer of Geneva brought their daughters, Sydney, 10 and Olivia, 7, and a friend, Caitlin Cassidy, 6, along with family, Cathy and Steve McConnell, visiting from Pennsylvania to the program Sydney, who came prepared with binoculars, said she likes watching redwinged blackbirds.

Steve McConnell said he liked all the open space and nature activities he was seeing while visiting his in-

laws.

“It’s just a lot of planning and having enough funding from the community to keep things like this going,” McConnell said. “It wasn’t just this park. I was pretty amazed at how many parks there are in this vicinity. Developments are notorious for leveling the trees and not having anything around. This is unusual for the amount of foresight to have. I appreciate that.”

Bryan Schertzer said his taxes were well-spent to preserve and maintain parks like Peck Farm Park.

“The burden of property tax here in the Fox Valley is relatively high,” Schertzer said. “But you can visibly see it’s being put to good use. We see that in our library system and in our school system and ... the park system is, I think, unparalleled to any of the other areas I’ve lived. It’s something we appreciate as a family and use on a regular basis. It sets a good example for what a park district can do when they have the tax revenue to support it.”

BLACKBERRY TOWNSHIP – The son of Paul Ruby, founder of the Paul Ruby Foundation for Parkinson’s Research, was one of two teenage boys involved in driving their vehicles into a porch late Friday.

Wesley B. Ruby, 17, of the 39W600 block of Carney Lane in Blackberry Township, was ticketed for failure to reduce speed to avoid an accident, according to the Kane County Sheriff’s Office crash report.

The other driver, Collin K. Steel, 17, of the 0N500 block of West Weaver Circle, Blackberry Township, was ticketed for disobeying a stop sign. Both are scheduled to appear in court July 24, according to the crash report.

Paul Ruby is the general manager of the Herrington Inn and Spa in Geneva, as well as the founder of a nonprofit organization that raises money to find a cure or effective treatment for Parkinson’s.

Ruby was diagnosed in 2006 at age 42.

Ruby did not return a voice mail message seeking comment.

According to the crash report, Wesley Ruby was driving a 2006 F-150 Ford pickup, and Steel was driving a 2006 Lin-

coln, both going south on Brundige Road at the intersection of Armstrong Lane in the Mill Creek subdivision.

Steel attempted to pass Ruby’s pickup just as Ruby turned left, causing the passenger side of the Lincoln to strike the driver’s side of the pickup, according to the crash report.

The two vehicles then continued in an arc, and both rammed into the front porch of a corner house on the 0N500 block of Armstrong Lane, causing damage to the porch and stairs, the report states.

Both Ruby and Steel were released at the scene by the Elburn and Countryside Fire Protection District, contrary to earlier reports that they were taken to a hospital. Both vehicles sustained heavy damage and were not drivable, the report states.

Paul Ruby credited Wesley Ruby in prompting him to begin the effort to raise funds to find a cure for Parkinson’s.

In earlier interviews with the Chronicle, Ruby had said his son was just 10 when he wrote a letter urging then-President George W. Bush to reverse his decision to veto funds for stem cell research.

Parkinson’s is a degenerative disease of the central nervous system with no cure, characterized by tremors.

A woman weighing less than 120 pounds can reach a blood-alcohol level of 0.05 after just one drink, studies show. A man weighing up to 160 pounds can reach 0.05 after two drinks. Maridis said he hoped that patrons would act responsibly, regardless of what the law is.

In Illinois, a driver is considered to be under the influence if that motorist has a blood-alcohol concentration of 0.08 or more, has used any illegal substance or is impaired by medica-

tion. A driver’s blood-alcohol level is based on the ratio of alcohol to blood or breath. The Illinois General Assembly in 1997 approved lowering the illegal blood-alcohol level from 0.10 to 0.08.

NTSB Chairman Deborah Hersman said states need to lower the limit even further, to 0.05, to make a dent in the problem of impaired driving.

“Most Americans think that we’ve solved the problem of impaired driving, but in fact, it’s still a national epidemic,” said Hersman in May, in announcing the recommendation. “On average, every hour one person is killed and 20 more are injured.”

According to the NTSB, nearly 10,000 people are killed in crashes involving alcohol-impaired drivers every year in the United States, and more than 173,000 are injured, with 27,000 suffering incapacitating injuries.

“The research clearly shows that drivers with a BAC above 0.05 are impaired and at a significantly greater risk of being involved in a crash where someone is killed or injured,” Hersman said.

She noted that 100 countries on six continents have blood-alcohol limits set at 0.05 or lower.

State Rep. Kay Hatcher, R-Yorkville, said she believes the recommendation merits further study.

“I’ve done enough background reading to believe it’s worth investigating further,” Hatcher said. “Our focus should always be public safety.”

Hatcher said state lawmakers might debate the issue soon and that some sort of legislation suggesting the lowered limit might be filed in the next session.

“Between now and then, there should be a lot more data we will have access to,” Hatcher said. “Without data, it’s only an opinion.”

“I don’t know if having a law on the books will change the behavior of those who choose to behave irresponsibly,” Olesen said. “Those who are responsible will continue to be responsible.”

Olesen is skeptical about a recommendation by the National Transportation Safety Board that all states lower their drunken driving threshold to a blood-alcohol level of 0.05, as part of a series of suggestions to reduce the number of alcohol-related highway deaths.

O’ Sole Mio serves authentic Italian experience

By NICOLE WESKERNA nweskerna@shawmedia.com BATAVIA – An owner of O’ Sole Mio in Batavia said when customers stop in, they can expect to have as close to an authentic Italian experience as possible.

Tory and Andrea Chiappelli, who live in Batavia, own the new cafe, bar and gelato shop on River Street with their partner, Tony Natale. The shop opened in late March, and Tory Chiappelli said they’ve gone through quite a bit of gelato since.

“We have been making 12 to 18 pans a day. ... The pans are five liters each,” she said. “We didn’t have any idea that the gelato would go that fast.”

Tory Chiappelli, who learned the art of gelato making from the Carpigiani Gelato University in Bologna, Italy, said making gelato is her creative outlet.

“Our goal was to bring the Italian experience to America,” she said.

While they serve the more traditional flavors, such as chocolate, vanilla and pistachio, they also have a case of gelato dedicated to the more experimental flavors, such as one flavored with Fruity Pebbles cereal.

“Every time I go to the grocery store, I see something and say, that would be good in gelato,” Tory Chiappelli said. “My goal is to continue making new stuff so every time you come in here, there’s something new to discover.”

All of the gelato is freshly homemade on site in the “Gelato Lab.” The difference between gelato and ice cream is that gelato is made with milk, and ice cream is made with cream, Tory Chiappelli said. It’s not fluffy like ice cream, she said, and the flavors hit the palette a little harder than ice cream.

All flavors are gluten free, except for the flavors in which an ingredient with gluten is added, such as birthday cake or cookie dough. Some flavors, such as the margarita, are infused with alcohol.

Tory Chiappelli said they decided to open the shop in Batavia because that’s where they live, and also because there aren’t many other places in the area to buy authentic Italian gelato.

She said she’s in the process of making cakes using semifreddo, which she said is a cross between mousse and gelato. She said she hopes to start offering classes on how to make gelato.

But gelato isn’t the only category on the menu. The shop also offers a full bar, cafe and food menu.

Tory Chiappelli said they have live music on the weekends, too.

Tory Chiappelli said while they offer lighter fare and the cafe, their goal is not to compete with local restaurants, but rather to complement them. She said O’ Sole Mio is a place to stop and have lunch, or stop and have a martini and an appetizer before going out for dinner. It’s also a place to grab some dessert after a meal.

“We’re trying to really be different,” she said.

Wine Lovers Weekend and the Taste of Galena are so successful, committee members from each decided to collaborate on a new event.

The result is the Galena Food and Wine Festival.

“We are excited to be working with the Wine Lovers’ Weekend Committee to launch this new event,” ARC Taste of Galena spokeswoman Sarah Peterson said. “It won’t replace the ARC Taste of Galena we hold in February, but rather it will be a nice compliment featuring 12 area restaurants.”

Tim Althaus, the president of event sponsor Family Beer and Liquor, will select more than 150 wines for the event.

Althaus also compiles the wine list for the Grand Tastings at Wine Lover’s Weekend, and I trust he will again

A portion of the event’s proceeds will benefit the Galena Arts and Recreation Center, which serves as a local community center that hosts programs for artists, children, families and seniors. Live music, a silent auction and raffle also will be part of the event.

“There is no park district in Galena, but there is the ARC, which has day care, preschool, fitness programs and other events for all members of the community,” event spokeswoman Janelle Keeffer said.

Through 36 openings this season, the safe path to bragging rights is a guess in the neighborhood of 5,465 fans.

That’s the average attendance at Fifth Third Bank Ballpark, a figure 590 fans ahead of the same juncture last season.

Cougars general manager Curtis Haug can’t help feeling blue when crunching the numbers, a nod to the predominant color of the parent club residing about an hour down the road. Haug expected a bump when the Cougars and Cubs announced a two-year player-development contract last September, which helps explain his comfort in discussing it.

“There’s really no other way to say it other than the fact that overall, the ticket sales are up significantly, and they continue to trend that way,” Haug said. “Now, if we could just get Mother Nature to cooperate with us a little bit, I think we’ll have a huge, huge second half of the season.”

The Midwest League waded through more rain-outs in April than during the entire 2012 season, a statistic personified in the Cougars’ 70 for 70 showing at the box office last season.

With several home series remaining – including the one over the Labor Day holiday – Haug is optimistic the Cougars can supplant last season’s average of 5,587, which ranked third in the 16-team MWL. Staying ahead of the

“It wasn’t real bad, but we’re in the red a little bit,” MWL president George Spelius said. “I’m sure we’ll catch up with it or [be] close to it, you know what I mean.”

Since relocating from Wausau, Wis., to Geneva before the 1991 season, the Cougars have provided the MWL with a fan base that routinely pulls the league’s average attendance higher.

Last season marked the first time the Cougars fell below 400,040 fans since 1993.

The team attracted at least

500,000 fans from 2001-06, when it was affiliated with Florida and Oakland.

Throw in the Cubs connection and a stable of highly touted prospects that includes outfielder Albert Almora and first baseman Dan Vogelbach, and Haug only figured the interest would grow. Then again, this already was one of the pre-eminent operations in the minor leagues.

“Whether it’s the billboards that the Cubs have in the outfield or the logos in the lawn area or the fans sitting in the seats that are wearing Cubs paraphernalia – the jerseys and the T-shirts and the

caps and all that – it’s definitely noticeable,” Haug said.

“But there’s still that, ‘Hey, we’re the Cougars and we’ve got a great brand and we’ve been here 23 seasons.’ But being affiliated with the Cubs is definitely a great thing for us.”

The game-day experience also excites visiting players.

Sam Roberts, a second baseman in the Oakland organization, played with Burlington at the end of last season and now suits up for Beloit after the A’s also signed a new PDC in September.

Neither city averaged more than 1,096 fans from 2010-12.

“When we did stay, the hotel’s really nice [at Pheasant Run Resort],” Roberts said.

“Normally, you get a pretty good crowd. They’re always into it, so I enjoy it, for the most part.”

Beloit returns to Geneva in late August, closing out a summer in which the Cougars expect to attract the franchise’s 10 millionth fan.

“We’ve got a lot in store in the second half, and we’re looking forward to it,” Haug said.

“And we’re looking forward to seeing people here at the ballpark enjoying themselves.”

Menus can be much more than the inspiration for just that one restaurant meal you might be pondering. Taking a peek online ahead of time or just perusing before ordering can be a lightning fast way to snatch a few meal ideas.

Most menus give dish descriptions, including ingredient combinations. Let that be your invitation to try ones that catch your fancy at home. I recently looked up a famed New York City Italian restaurant we’d be visiting.

The walnut salad caught my eye: a simple combination of nuts, raisins, romaine, freshly shaved Parmesan cheese in a mustard vinaigrette. Without ever having tasted the real thing, I enjoyed just that within minutes with dinner at home that night, economically and quickly preparing the dressing by just whisking a few dashes of spicy mustard into a bottled light balsamic vinaigrette I had tossed with the rest of the ingredients, all of which I had on hand.

Breakfast Risotto Upon Rising: Emulate this cafe and serve risotto with cooked smoked bacon, Parmesan, fresh herbs, green peas and parsley topped with poached eggs.
