Troop 51 does best ‘Man vs. Wild’ impersonation By DANNY CIAMPRONE dciamprone@shawmedia.com CLARENDON HILLS – Dramatic climate changes, forest fires and more than 100 miles of hiking tested a group of Boy Scouts from Troop 51 who Bear Gryllsed the wild during a 12day adventure in New Mexico, all while being almost self-sufficient. “It’s not as wild as ‘Man vs. Wild,’ but it’s close,” said Andy Schmidt of Clarendon Hills, referring to the TV show featuring survivalist Bear Grylls. Schmidt, his 16- and 14-yearold sons and about 21 others headed out on a train June 13 from the Clarendon Hills train station for the Philmont Scout Ranch in New Mexico. Philmont is considered one of the premier destinations for high adventure in Boys Scouts. The boys, ages 14 to 18, and the seven adults originally were set to take on trek 33 of the 35 offered, but because of forest fires in New Mexico, the boys were bumped to the most dif-

ficult trek resulting in hiking about 120 miles – 30 more than expected. “It was very hot – it was about 10 degrees higher than normal,” said Scout Master Don Mungovan of Clarendon Hills, who had a beard upon arrival June 27. “It was tough, but every boy just stepped up to the challenge.” In addition to hiking and camping along the way, the boys took part in black powder shooting, search and rescue activities and mountain biking while exploring the terrain around them. Mungovan said each Scout carried a sleeping bag, sleeping pad, three changes of clothes, pocket knife, four liters of water, rain gear, warm clothes and dehydrated food such as beef

Members of Clarendon Hills Boy Scouts Troop No. 51 board a Metra train June 13 at the Clarendon Hills Train Station, 1 S. Prospect Ave. jerky. Along the way, the Scouts saw everything from bison, to badgers, elk, deer, a rattlesnake and the aftermath of a bear. “We did not see a bear, but one morning we got up, and there was fresh bear scat in our camp,” Mungovan said. “We
were so tired from hiking we just slept through it.” The lone Eagle Scout, Jack Girard, 18, of Clarendon Hills, said the Scouts started training for the adventure six to eight months ago. As a member of the cross country and track team at Hinsdale Central High School, Girard wasn’t worried about conditioning. In fact, he said the trip was better than expected,
especially considering the circumstances. “We didn’t see any flames, but we could definitely see the smoke,” Girard said. “You could definitely smell it. The hottest days were in the mid to upper 90s, but it was a very dry heat.” Although Bear Grylls has an impressive resume in addition to his show “Man vs. Wild,” the survival specialist always has said the most important factor when facing survival is the will to survive. Boy Scouts teaches an array of survival skills and tips, but like Grylls, Mungovan said being a Boy Scout is more about taking whatever life throws at you, which was tested on this trip. “It’s about perseverance, leadership, confidence and building a sense of accomplishment that we can get it done,” he said. Mungovan said what he took away from the trip was seeing the troop interact and support each other through harsh conditions. “It was great just seeing these boys come together, work together, mature and overcome the obstacles,” he said.

because the brain has problems moving the body parts needed for speech. It’s unclear how many children are diagnosed with CAS, but studies show it’s on the rise, according to the American Speech-Language-Hearing Association. “They are typical boys with video games, they’re all involved in Boy Scouts and Cub Scouts, they like to play outside,” said the Westmont
resident. “Just typical boy stuff. LEGOs is a big hit in our house.” One cause of CAS is genetics, which is what Matt believes was the cause with her children. Some of the symptoms, according to the American Speech-Language-Hearing Association, include an infant not babbling, first words being late, only a few different consonant and vowel sounds being used and the child showing long pauses between sounds. “You can’t really diagnose until they’re 3, and then once we got into the process with our private therapist, they confirmed that it was CAS,” Matt said. At the time of diagnosis,
Matt said there was little known about CAS, but more children are being diagnosed with it. It’s this fear of the unknown that Matt wanted to help others with. A little more than a year ago, Matt and other parents started a nonprofit called The Apraxia Connection to educate others and help parents. “It was parents getting together and sharing stories, sharing treatment and just having that support system, which is key,” she said. The nonprofit has brought in guest speakers, created a grant, holds monthly meetings and recently had a picnic. Today, The Apraxia Connection has about 500

On Oct. 14, the fifth annual Walk for Children with Apraxia of Speech will be at Ty Warner Park in Westmont to raise awareness, but also to bring people together. “We want that whole feeling of you’re not in this alone,” she said. Today, her kids are 9 and 7 years old, and Matt said both of them are doing well. “Today my son went over to a neighbor, and she’s like, ‘Oh my God, his speech exploded this year; like, I can totally understand him now,’” she said.

HINSDALE – The silence finally is being lifted in regards to what people know about Childhood Apraxia of Speech, and that’s helping children – and their parents – find their voice. “When you tell people it’s Apraxia, they’re like, ‘What?’” said Barbara Matt, a third-grade teacher at Monroe School in Hinsdale who had two children diagnosed with CAS at the ages of 2 and 5. “Knowing it’s being recognized makes it real.” CAS is a motor speech disorder causing children to have problems articulating sounds, syllables and words

Storm strips Hinsdale Clothiers of inventory By DANNY CIAMPRONE dciamprone@shawmedia.com HINSDALE – Even on a cloudy mild Wednesday in July, the aroma of oil could be smelled before walking into Hinsdale Clothiers. “The heat from the sun comes in, and it heats that oil up, and, boy, the smell is pretty bad,” owner Steve Potter said. “This is actually the weakest right now.” Some areas still are in the cleanup process after a heavy storm came through June 24, and quite possibly laid the biggest hit on Hinsdale Clothiers, a fine clothing store for men at 777 N. York Road. Potter said lightning hit a power line pole a few feet from his store, but as it was falling, it pulled down the power line pole in front of his store. The pole directly hit the roof, and the transformers pierced the ceiling. “One of the transformers opened up and started dripping oil along with rain water into the store,” Potter said. “Water was coming in, and it went across the floor.” The fire department shut down the area as two staff members tried moving merchandise out of the way so it wouldn’t be damaged. Potter couldn’t get in the store for two days as the smell of oil soaked into the merchandise. “What happened was the oil smell permeated the clothing, and so we have

York Road in Hinsdale, as a result of a storm June 24. a lot of our clothing moved from first quality to second quality, so we can’t sell it as first-quality clothing anymore,” he said. Potter said he is in the claims process with the insurance company. A hole still was visible in the ceiling Wednesday, stains from oil going across
the ceiling displayed across the store, and oil leaking down the wall. The ceiling will be replaced, there will be floor work done, and the woodwork will have to be cleaned, Potter said. “Literally, all the merchandise in the store is going to be disposed of
shortly,” he said. Potter said he was frustrated by the time it took ComEd to clean the area of down power lines and make it so the store was reenterable. “We actually had situations where people were just standing around and talking, looking and not acting at all,” he said. “We laughed at what they called coverage.” ComEd spokeswoman Ashley Dennison said there were times when crews had to wait for material delivery and counsel from ComEd’s environmental team. “The ComEd employees onsite were working as safely and efficiently as they could to restore power to this area,” Dennison said. Dennison said there were factors that extended the restoration time after the outage, including the damage caused by high winds, the environmental impact from the oil leak and the time needed to prioritize public safety. Potter has set a tentative reopening date of Aug. 1 and said the store “will look fresh and new again.” He also was touched by the support of his customers, one of whom called him at home to ask about the store’s status. “It was really nice to have a customer call, and we work hard to build relationships with them, so it was a relationship that was highly valued,” he said.

DARIEN – The Darien Police responded to Walmart, at 2189 W. 75th St. in Darien, for the report of found money at 11 a.m. Wednesday. Richard Zuhn, manager for the store, told the police officer that a shopping cart attendant located a bank bag left in one of the shopping carts. Upon examination, the bag contained about $7,355. The employee reported the money to his manager, and a person claiming to be the owner of the money contacted Walmart. The Darien Police and Walmart management viewed store video to confirm the ownership. The money has been returned to the owner.
Police advise residents leaving on vacation HINSDALE – The Hinsdale Police Department has released
a series of crime-prevention tips for residents who are traveling away from home during the holiday season. According to police, the No. 1 prevention tip is to make the house look “lived in” when away. This includes not letting items pile up in the mailbox or on the porch. Instead, arrange for a neighbor to gather the items. The department also encourages setting timers for interior and exterior lights, radio and televisions, making sure the garage is secured, assuring that alarms are in working condition and leaving emergency contact information with someone or the department. Residents also can notify the police department and request a vacation watch. For information, call 630-7897070. – Suburban Life Media

8SOUND OFF Pavers in D-99 lots? I just wanted to comment about District 99 putting in brick paver parking lots. With this unstable economy, you would think they might think a little more about putting in asphalt, maybe conserve a little bit or save money. And then they might have money left over to get a jacuzzi for the teachers. Just wanted everyone’s opinions on that and I think it’s ridiculous we’re spending so much money when we could have done asphalt and saved some money.

Changes and challenges for the grid Some people think scientists have a lot of answers, but when we talk to each other, we mostly have questions. This is certainly true in my field, which is strategic issues affecting the energy and power industries, because big changes that will affect us all are happening right now. For example: • Wind and solar energy are the nation’s fastest growing energy sources. • Millions of smart meters and smart grid components are giving us more choices in how we consume electricity. • We’re saving more gasoline every day by driving more hybrid and all-electric vehicles. • Natural gas is dramatically cheaper and in greater supply than just a few years ago. These are all positive developments, but they come with big challenges because the grid has so many moving parts that it’s hard to coordinate them efficiently. We have 18,000 power sources, from small diesel generators to huge nuclear plants, that send electricity over 200,000 miles of high-voltage transmission lines to 60,000 substations, which send it again over 3 million miles of distribution lines to millions of homes, offices and industries. Now throw in this complication: We can’t store electricity on this scale and release it on demand, but production still has to equal demand 24/7. When millions of us turn on our air conditioners, the extra electricity has to be there right now, and when we turn them off, some power plants have to ramp down. These challenges will only grow as we add more wind and solar energy sources into the mix because their dayto-day production is variable and as hard to predict as the weather. Right now, they contribute only about 3 percent of the nation’s electricity. But their share is expected to grow rapidly and may provide up to 80

COMMUNITY VOICE Guenter Conzelmann percent of our electricity by 2050. With this much renewable energy, managing the grid so the lights will always stay on will be a challenge. It will require new technologies and new ways to plan and operate our grid. We also will have to figure out the impact on our other huge investments in the transmission and distribution system and on our nuclear, coal and natural gas plants, and how it will change the way homes, offices and factories interact with it all. At Argonne National Laboratory, the U.S. Energy Department’s Office of Science and Office of Energy Efficiency and Renewable Energy support work with many universities, private companies and other national laboratories to understand and manage the national impacts. We use supercomputers to develop better predictive models, develop new materials and advanced batteries for grid-scale energy storage, and study smart meters and systems that may let us store electricity in our electric vehicles and homes when the price of electricity is low and sell it back to utilities when prices are high. These are just examples. In the next 10 to 20 years, our national electricity system will look a lot different than it does today. I wish I could tell you exactly how, but right now those of us who study it for a living have more questions than answers.

JFK assassination expert weighs in on 50th anniversary By DANNY CIAMPRONE dciamprone@shawmedia.com CLARENDON HILLS – “The X-Files” TV show gave us hope the truth is out there, but as long as some degree of doubt is cast, conspiracy theories will exist. The assassination of President John F. Kennedy may go down as the biggest conspiracy in U.S. history. There have been books, documentaries, Hollywood movies and research conducted on examining whether Lee Harvey Oswald acted alone Nov. 22, 1963, or didn’t act at all. One of the experts in the field is Phil Singer of Clarendon Hills, who was 9 years old at the time of Kennedy’s death. He heard about it while he was at school. “It was a big thing,” said Singer, surrounded by JFK exhibit items at the Gregg House Museum in Westmont. “For some to relate, it’s like where were you when 9/11 happened?” Singer started following the investigation even at that early of an age by collecting newspaper clippings and reading books. In 1964, the Warren Report was printed stating after an investigation, it was determined Oswald acted alone in the assassination and Jack Ruby acted alone when he as-

Kennedy. sassinated Oswald. At 20 years old, Singer joined the Citizens Commission of Inquiry and was head of his college chapter at Knox College. Singer would write letters to congressman and was trying to get the case reopened, which the group succeeded at in the late 1970s. “There was just a big disconnect with what witnesses saw and heard and what the government told us hap-
pened,” he said. There are inexplicable conspiracy theories that exist today, such as believing the Earth is flat, but the JFK assassination is one Singer and others believe was a conspiracy and a cover-up by the government. Over the years, Singer has interviewed doctors who tried to save Kennedy, government agents and other researchers. He also has appeared in a documentary
about the case. Singer compared the case with a 1,000-piece puzzle where about 100 pieces are missing, another 200 don’t fit and another 200 have been switched around. “That’s why to this day people like me are still trying to figure it out and can’t ... and you never will fully figure it out,” he said. One of the major flaws in the case, Singer said, is Oswald
himself. Despite the praise Oswald receives in Hollywood’s “Full Metal Jacket,” Singer said Oswald had a terrible shot when he was in the military based on interviews he conducted. “When Oswald would sometimes shoot he would get Maggie’s drawers (a military slang term to indicate the shooter missed the target), and they would laugh because he would miss the whole target,” he said. On June 18, Singer gave a presentation at the Gregg House Museum about the assassination and did a question-and-answer session. He said the event went well, and about 70 people came to the exhibit, which featured artifacts and historical sources on JFK. He also is working on a book of his own. “What I try and tell people is that it wasn’t just the president that was killed, it was that the presidency was assassinated,” he said. “It was the office of the presidency was taken out.”
Lisle’s Eyes to the Skies takes flight this week By AMANDA FRAZER msleditorial@shawmedia.com LISLE – For the next three days, residents can see Lisle from about a 1,000 feet up. This year’s Lisle Eyes to the Skies Festival will run through Saturday at Lisle Community Park, 1825 Short St., Lisle. In addition to the hot air balloons residents can watch and ride, there will be musical performances, a children’s area, craft fair, parade, fireworks, about 30 food and beverage vendors and a carnival. “I truly believe family memories are made at this festival,” said Lisle resident Mike Shuta, co-chairman of a committee of 26 volunteers that organized the festival. “The whole thing is for the community, and we like to see people having a good

time.” Weather-permitting, Shuta said he expects 40,000 to 50,000 residents to attend the festival. Admission to the festival is $5 for residents 6 and older and free for children ages 5 and younger. Shuta said proceeds from the festival will be donated to Kiwanis Club of Lisle, Lisle Lions Club, Lisle Partners for Parks, Lisle Area Chamber of Commerce and the Lisle Education Foundation. An addition to the festival this year is the Mobile Mountain. In the
children’s area, the series of apparatus includes a climbing wall, bounce house, slides and water challenge. Pam Shuta, a festival organizer, said this year the festival will have more than 20 hot air balloons, and about six of the balloons will be uniquely shaped, including one from the musical “Wicked.” Each day, the balloons will take flight, weather-permitting, at 6 a.m. and 6 p.m., and a balloon glow will be about 8:30 p.m. Pam Shuta said residents will be allowed onto the balloon field to take photos and talk to pilots. Tethered balloon rides also are available in the mornings and evenings on a first-come, first-serve basis. Rides are $20 for adults and $15 for children, and are east of the bridge on Short Street outside the
festival entrance. The nation’s first wheelchair-accessible hot air balloon, named Serena’s Song, will provide rides to children and adults with disabilities at the festival, as well. To reserve a flight, contact SEASPAR at seaspar.org or 630-960-7600. “It’s very cool to be up there and feel like you are floating,” Shuta said. “It’s an experience you don’t have [available] every day.” She added that bands at the festival will include American English, Ambrosia and Chicago 6, which features former Chicago Bears and 1985 Super Bowl champions Dan Hampton, Otis Wilson and Steve McMichael. Festival parking will be $5 at designated locations and will include a shuttle to and from the festival.

Baked Apple Breakfast Co. starts day off right DOWNERS GROVE – Does anyone not like breakfast? The popularity of diners would suggest that not only does everyone love breakfast, but patrons will eat it just about anytime – morning or night. The thought holds true at The Baked Apple Breakfast Co. in Downers Grove, where breakfast definitely is the specialty, and you can get your favorites right up until close at 3 p.m. The eatery’s menu is playful and inventive with options such as the Company omelette – apples, cheddar cheese and a dollop of sour cream – and Red Velvet pancakes with a sweet cream cheese spread. Diners also are treated to plenty of lunch options. Available any time, the luncheon menu includes a well-rounded range of sandwiches, salads, wraps and burgers. On a recent Saturday trip, a friend and I decided to tackle both. I ordered the Wild Turkey – a panini-style sandwich of thick-cut roast turkey, bacon and cheddar. The side options give you a choice between fries and pasta salad. It also comes with a pickle, as all sandwiches should. The turkey was moist and laid on deep, and the bacon retained a good crispiness, even under the pressed panini pressure. I’m glad I decided to go with the side of fries, because they absolutely stand out at Baked Apple. Long, thin and golden with a crispy crunch, these fried taters come in a bountiful bunch and really hit the spot. My dining companion was in the breakfast mood and ordered the Uncle Jesse omelette – spinach, tomato and feta cheese. He really was feeling the hash browns, which, like the fries, were wonderfully crisp, with just the right amount of soft potato inside. His omelette was bright yellow with colorful glints of spinach and nicely filled. It was a substantial serving, and to Baked Apple’s credit, he nearly finished it all. Neither of us was in the mood for sweets on our recent visit, which was too bad. The menu has a lot of options for those who like waffles, pancakes and French toast. A few I considered for another visit are the Holly Berry French toast smothered in strawberries, blueberries and raspberries; the Company

Hinsdale South’s Ali Issa catches a pass during a 7-on-7 game against Ridgewood on June 26 in La Grange Park.
7-on-7 impact By JASON ROSSI jrossi@shawmedia.com In the era of aerial football, 7-on-7 passing events are the rage. Even a team such as Hinsdale South, which prefers to keep the ball on the ground, can get something out of the plethora of passing events that take place each summer. “You pretty much get on the same page as your quarterbacks and the other receivers and get your timing down, so it helps out in a lot of ways,” senior receiver Mark Watson said. The dearth of defense at a 7-on-7 makes the event only an approximation of real football,

but it is helpful for players. South senior Jake Czjakowski, who has been sharing reps at quarterback with Rob Regan this summer, said the laissez-faire approach to offense has been a benefit. “This is helpful because you can really focus on technical stuff,” Czjakowski said. “When you’re going full team, 11-on-11, it gets clustered at the line and you can’t really focus on your drops and get into a

rhythm with your passes, so this really helps with that technical stuff. “You get into a rhythm and make your reads, and just focus on who’s open at the time. We mix up a lot of our routes, so I get to make all kind of throws.” Players love the loose atmosphere and the chance to throw the ball, but South coach Mike Barry and Hinsdale Central coach Rich Tarka prefer full team practices during the summer. Tarka said he hopes to have nearly 100 percent of the Red Devils’ offense and defense installed by the end of summer camp before pre-season practices start Aug. 14. Central has
several 7-on-7 events on the schedule throughout the summer, including one Wednesday at Nazareth and another July 13 at Downers Grove South, but full-team practices are the most beneficial. “Last year we went to the Wheaton Warrenville South [7on-7], the competitive one, and it was cool, but I don’t know how much it really means,” Tarka said. “It’s nice to compete, but we’re trying to teach our kids over the summer and find out who can do what and who can compete, and it’s not real football to me.” Barry and the Hornets competed at their first 7-on-7 of the summer June 26 at Nazareth Academy and are scheduled
to attend the West Suburban Conference event Thursday. Like Tarka, he prefers team practices, but he also sees the pros of competing in passing events over the summer. “I like the 7-on-7s, but it’s a little unrealistic because you can’t run the football, so you get linebackers that drop [into pass coverage]. We focus on it because it’s good competition, but we don’t over-emphasize it like some teams,” Barry said. “We run the option, so we look for a good decision-maker [at quarterback], but we also look at the mechanics, the skills, the decision making and also the leadership ability, and all those intangible things can come out during a 7-on-7.”

Local players shine at USTA Midwest finals SUBURBAN LIFE MEDIA Martin Joyce already staked his claim as best male tennis player in Illinois when he won a singles state title while competing for Hinsdale Central High School this spring. On June 27, Joyce found himself in the championship match in the 18-and-under singles draw at the USTA Midwest Level 1 Outdoor Championships. Facing Thomas Fawcett of Winnetka, Joyce came up just short in a 7-6 (5), 6-0 match, but the six-day tournament wasn’t all heartbreak for Joyce. He teamed up with TJ Oosterbaan of Kalamazoo, Mich., to win the title in the 18U doubles tournament. The pair won a marathon 6-2, 6-7 (5), 1-0 (10-4) match in the semifinals, which made their 7-6 (2),

Caroline Dolehide (Hinsdale) made it to the championship match in the 18U girls bracket and placed second, and she teamed with Brienne Minor of Mundelein for a top-four finish in doubles play. Grace Tapak (Hindale) was a top-16 finisher in the 18U girls draw. In the 18U girls doubles draw, Marika Cusick (Hinsdale) and Cassie Mercer (Huntington, West Virginia) finished second after a tough 6-3, 7-6 (6) match in the finals. Isabella Lorenzini of Clarendon Hills was top 10 in the 16U singles bracket after a 7-5, 2-6, 1-0 (10-3) victory in a consolation quarterfinal match, and she paired with Alexandra Sanford for a run-
ner-up finish in the doubles bracket. Michael Lorenzini and John Zordani of Lake Forest finished top-four in the 18U doubles after playing into the semifinals. Gianni Ross of Burr Ridge and John McNally of Cincinnati took the 16U doubles title with a 6-2, 7-6 (7) win the championship match. That victory came on the heels of a 6-2, 7-5 win in the semifinals. Alex Ross of Burr Ridge finished top eight in the 16U singles draw after advancing to the quarterfinals and teamed with Grabill for a top-eight showing in the 16U doubles draw. More than 1,000 USTA players from Illinois, Indiana, Michigan, Ohio and Wisconsin competed in the tournament, which took place in Indianapolis and Okemos, Mich.

The mother and son team make up Higgins Glass Studio, 33 E. Quincy, entrusted to the Wimmers to carry on the art crafted by their long time mentors, Fran and Michael Higgins, who began the company in 1948. Louise and Jonathan agree that it was Fran’s ideas and Michael’s energy and ingenuity that led these two huge talents to start their work out if their Chicago apartment in 1948. Over the years their art sold in such major retailers as Marshall Field’s, Georg Jensen and Bullocks Wilshire, the very high end store in the California based department store chain. In 1966, the Higgins decided to return to private studio work and set up their offices in Riverside.
