Man gets 10 years Man gets 5 years for aggravated battery for sexual assault KANE COUNTY CHRONICLE

KANE COUNTY CHRONICLE editorial@kcchronicle.com NORTH AURORA – A former North Aurora resident has been sentenced to prison for sexually preying on a child he knew, according to a news release from the Kane County State’s Attorney’s Office.

D a r r e l l E . Darrell E. Beck, 46, of the Beck 3300 block of Boulder Ridge Drive, Champaign, was sentenced Tuesday

by Kane County Associate Judge Clint Hull to 10 years in prison. He was convicted in

January of one count of predatory criminal sexual assault, a Class X felony.

According to the Kane County State’s Attorney’s Office, Beck had sexual contact with a young boy he knew between Oct. 24, 2006, and June 26, 2007. The boy was younger than 13 during the assault.

The assault took place at Beck’s North Aurora home when Beck was a foster parent to the victim. Since then, Beck has been living in Champaign.

Beck must serve at least 85 percent of the sentence, according to state law. Beck was given credit for at least 68 days served in the Kane County Jail.

CHARLES – A St. Charles man was sentenced to five years in prison Tuesday after he was convicted of aggravated battery charges stemming from an incident that took place in October 2009 outside of a St. Charles tavern, according to a news release from the Kane County State’s Attorney’s OfJack R. Gray fice.

Jack R. Gray, 29, was convicted in April. About 1:40 a.m. Oct. 3, 2009, outside a tavern in the 200 block of West Main Street, St. Charles, Gray and a friend began to argue with the victim and his friend for an unknown reason, according to the release. When the victim was turned away from Gray and unable to see him, Gray punched the victim with a closed fist in the left rear part of the victim’s jaw.

The victim fell unconscious to the sidewalk and fractured his skull.

The victim was hospitalized in a coma for three days after the incident.

The victim continues to recover from the blow, and now suffers permanent hearing loss and ringing in his

ears, the release stated.

Gray has a history of criminal behavior. In 2003 in Kane County, Gray pleaded guilty to one count of criminal damage to property, a Class 3 felony, from a 2001 arrest for damaging several vehicles, including a police car, and was sentenced to 24 months’ probation.

In 2004 in DuPage County, Gray pleaded guilty to one count of unlawful delivery of a controlled substance, a Class 1 felony, from a 2002 arrest and was sentenced to probation. Gray failed to comply with terms of the sentence and was resentenced to four years in prison.

According to Illinois law, Gray is eligible for dayfor-day sentencing. Gray receives credit for at least 86 days served in the Kane County Jail, where he has been held without bond since his conviction.

“It’s a shame Mr. Gray failed to learn that his antisocial behavior, if it continued, would come with a steep price,” Kane County State’s Attorney Joe McMahon said.

“His poor decision, which needlessly put a man in the hospital, cost him his freedom for a couple of years.”

The case was prosecuted

by Kane County Assistant State’s Attorney Lori Anderson and investigated by the St. Charles Police Department.

Mostly, it’s the eggs. That’s how we got started. My grandmother had a half-dozen chickens. That’s what people know us as. I’m the egg girl at most of the farmers markets.

I would imagine you have more than a half-dozen? We have around 200.

Is there a local restaurant you would recommend? When people come to town, I recommend Calamity Jane’s.

What is an interesting factoid about yourself? I have two different-colored eyes, just like David Bowie.

Playing with fire

Most fireworks illegal, but many ignore danger

By BRENDA SCHORY bschory@shawmedia.com Kevin Peterson acknowledged that, when he was a kid, he would play with fireworks.

“M80s – I blew up logs with them,” Peterson said. “Roman candles, I’d hold them in my hand and let them go. I played with all sorts of good stuff they don’t allow anymore.”

Peterson, now fire chief of the Maple Park and Countryside Fire Protection District, knows the fireworks of his childhood are now illegal in Illinois – and they never were safe to use, causing risk of injury and starting fires.

“We – luckily – have never had a lot of issues with it ourselves,” Peterson said.

“Somebody used a bottle rocket once that landed on the roof of a corn crib and started the corn crib on fire. It’s been at least 10 years ago when that happened.”

In a public statement, the Office of the Illinois State Fire Marshal urges people to go to professional shows rather than host their own backyard blow-em-ups. But with the Fourth of July on Thursday, residents throughout Kane County likely have been hearing the booms and cracks of illegal fireworks.

“We know people have them,” Peterson said. “And we all can tell them the legalities, that they are not allowed to have anything above a sparkler anymore. We tell them not to use them and go to a display. But people do use them, unfortunately.”

In St. Charles and Batavia – both home-rule communities – even sparklers are prohibited, according to their city codes.

Sparklers can be dangerous, said Kane County sheriff’s Lt. Pat Gengler and arson squad Sgt. Kevin Tindall.

When local police departments turn in illegal fireworks they have confiscated, the fireworks will go to the bomb and arson squad for disposal.

As Tindall unpacked box after box of rockets, Roman candles, missiles, mortar rounds and other bomblike devices, it was clear there was enough firepower to cause serious injuries and death.

Sparklers, glow-worms and little snap-n-pops are legal in the state, except where prohibited by home-rule ordinances.

Tindall has no love for sparklers, which do not explode but send off a bright ball of sparks as a combustible material burns down on a stick.

Sparklers were included in the county’s cache of confiscated fireworks.

“Sparklers, which are probably one of the most danger-

ous things anyways – whether they are the wood sticks or the metal sticks – they’ll burn around 2,000 degrees,” Tindall said. “And that’s when you see all the kids running around with them.”

Kids wearing sneakers made out of plastic or canvas and playing with a sparkler can run the risk of having the sparkler melt through the shoe and cause serious burns and foot injuries, Tindall said.

The confiscated explosives are considered consumer fireworks, Tindall said, not the kind used by professionals in legal and licensed pyrotechnic displays.

Other safety problems even with the type intended for consumer use occur when someone will light a fuse, and the thing blows up

in a person’s hand or face or when one explosion causes an uncontrolled chain reaction, Tindall said.

But how do police catch illegal fireworks displays on the Fourth?

“Therein lies the problem because there are so many of them,” Gengler said.

And then there are the consumers who get their hands on commercial-grade explosives, not realizing that these are probably rejects that are not safe.

“Last year, we had the guy who was setting these off with a torch and got close to a secondary device and blew his hand off,” Gengler said.

Fireworks use flash powder and depending on how much is in a device, it can be a felony, Tindall said.

Gesturing to various explosives that looked like small sticks of dynamite, Tindall said they were considered M100s, M250s and M1,000s, much more explosive than the M80s of yesteryear.

“If you have like two to three M80s, that’s a felony, illegal anywhere in the United States ... illegal anywhere it’s at because it’s so dangerous, “ Tindall said. “If you have one of these, it’s a felony, unlawful use of a weapon, possession of explosives.”

••• Roger Kahl was born and raised in Maple Park and still lives there. He remembers playing with fireworks back in the day.

“I started out with black powder and zip guns,” Kahl, 66, recalled. “Just normal boy stuff.”

These days, Kahl is a licensed, trained pyrotechnician, having put on 17 shows last year and planning several for the Fourth and some for holidays later in the summer.

“I work for DVC Imports in Lincoln,” Kahl said. “The crew I work with, we’re doing Burlington on July 3, Leland on July 4 and several crews in Shabonna Lake and in DeKalb.

On July 6, I’ll be at the Sycamore Speedway.”

He’s been doing professional fireworks since 1999.

“Lighting is the most dangerous thing,” Kahl said of the delicate timing when rockets and missiles are launched, creating the colorful explosions in the night sky.

“Once you light that fuse, you have three seconds to back away,” Kahl said. “There’s two feet of fuse that burns at 80 feet a second, and the thing comes out of the ... mortar at 300 miles an hour. If it’s a six-inch fuse, it’s done electronically.”

Kahl said he goes to continuing education on fireworks safety. He wears safety gear while putting on a show – everything from helmet and goggles to long pants and an old firefighter’s coat.

And so far, so good.

“Everybody around here checks how many fingers and toes I have,” Kahl said. “I have them all.”

Gas prices drop rapidly, New administrator hired in N. Aurora expected to stabilize soon Previous job was

By JONATHAN BILYK jbilyk@shawmedia.com Almost as quickly as they shot up, local fuel prices have come down, providing relief to motorists hitting the roads for the Independence Day holiday weekend.

This week, the price of a gallon of regular unleaded gasoline ranges from $3.35 to $3.75 a gallon in the Tri-Cities and surrounding communities. That marks a drop of 15 to 25 percent, depending on the service station and town, compared to the price motorists in the area were paying for gasoline in mid-June.

At that time, local fuel prices surged from slightly more than $4 a gallon during the Memorial Day weekend to more than $4.40 a gallon, threatening to challenge the all-time high gasoline price of $4.51 a gallon set in the spring of 2012.

The price run-up bucked historical trends, in which fuel prices normally decline after the Memorial Day holiday travel period. In June, industry analysts and local fuel distributors pinned the blame for the price jump on local refinery issues, which they said

“It created a supply issue, but it was limited to just here,” said Pete Mancini, president of St. Charles-based fuel distributor and service station operator Parent Petroleum. “The Chicago market was in a tough situation.”

Those high prices, however, enticed suppliers from other U.S. markets to divert fuel

to the Chicago area, Mancini said. Once local refineries began producing fuel at normal levels, prices rapidly dropped to bring the Chicago market more in line with national average prices.

Prices elsewhere in the Chicago market still average more than $3.90 a gallon. But they still are down 12 percent from mid-June, when gasoline averaged $4.48 a gallon in the Chicago area, according to fuel price tracking site GasBuddy.com.

Mancini said prices in the Tri-Cities have been driven even lower thanks to competition among local stations.

Mancini said he expects the local price of fuel to stabilize soon, and for the price to remain around $3.40 to $3.60 a gallon for the remainder of the summer, barring any significant disruptions to supply.

“We wouldn’t have gone anywhere near as high as we did if things were normal here,” he said. “Now, I think we’ll be where we are for a while.”

Trustees unanimously approved a four-year contract for Steven Bosco, who is currently the assistant to the village administrator in Bartlett. He is set to start Aug. 5, after his wife delivers their first child later this month.

“His wife is supposed to deliver on July 14,” North Aurora Village President Dale Berman said. “We just felt it was better that he starts a couple of weeks after it is all over.”

Bosco replaces former North Aurora village administrator Wes Kornowske, who resigned in August to take a position with a na-

tional trucking company in Green Bay, Wis. North Aurora Police Chief David Summer has been serving as the interim administrator.

Bosco lives in Aurora.

His starting salary will be $97,000.

Berman, along with Trustees Mark Gaffino and Ryan Lambert, interviewed Bosco. There were 45 candidates for the job.

“I think he has good experience,” Berman said. “He was looking for the opportunity to work with a new community. He came with good recommendations.”

Bosco has a master’s degree in public administration from Northern Illinois University in DeKalb and a bachelor’s degree from Elmhurst College. Berman already has a list of tasks he would like Bosco to work on once he starts.

“We have plenty of projects for him to work on,” Berman said. “We received a $100,000 grant to redo our comprehensive plan. I also want to do a strategic plan for the village.”

Cadence facility closes after water main break

By NICOLE WESKERNA nweskerna@shawmedia.com GENEVA – A water main break in Geneva temporarily closed Cadence Fitness & Health Center on Tuesday afternoon, according to an email announcement from the facility.

The announcement stated the staff anticipates that the facility, located at 296 Randall Road in Geneva, would reopen at 5 a.m. this morning.

Cadence spokesman Chris King said as of late Tuesday afternoon, Geneva city of-

ficials had not determined what caused the water main break, which happened about 3:30 p.m., according to the announcement.

He said the water main broke underground near the road entrance to the facility, and said there was no water in the actual facility.

“There’s no [indoor] flooding that I’m aware of,” he said.

“It was underground near the road entrance.”

He said Geneva city officials were on site Tuesday afternoon to fix the water main break.

Village Board seeks to limit president’s spending ability

By NICOLE WESKERNA nweskerna@shawmedia.com CAMPTON HILLS – The Campton Hills Village Board held a special meeting Tuesday to discuss applying limits to the village president’s spending powers.

Village trustees pointed out that the current ordinance, which allows the village president to spend $5,000 without board approval for emergency purposes, conflicts with another part of the ordinance and also does not limit how often that $5,000 could be spent.

The board Tuesday agreed to review the village code at the next regular board meeting July 16, when it may consider adding language that’s more specific about how and when that money can be used.

Trustee Al Lenkaitis Jr. said the ordinance pertaining to the president’s spending capabilities is listed twice in the village code, and only one of the two ordinances specifies that the Village Board has to review any unexpected expenditures within 10 days after the money is spent.

“We need to stop spending just because we have the authority ahead of time,” said Trustee Laura Andersen, who was designated as president pro-tem in Smith’s absence.

Lenkaitis said recently the village administration has been using that money to pay for “warrants,” or costs that are typically anticipated and don’t fluctuate from month to month.

“It’s not fiscally conservative,” he said. “It’s not even beneficial to us.”

“We just want to get

ahead of the process, not behind the process” of paying those bills, Andersen said.

In other business, the board also moved to figure out a way to produce a balanced 2014 budget, which was approved at a deficit June 18.

The village had $39,000 left over from the previous year’s budget, which was added to the current budget.

Projections also show that by 2015, the village will be operating at a $15,000 deficit.

“It’s a small amount, $15,000. But $15,000 is a lot of money, especially in our small village,” Andersen said.

The projected deficit climbs to more than $200,000 by 2021, trustees said.

They voted Tuesday to call a Finance Committee meeting before the end of the month to work on producing a more balanced budget.

BATAVIA – As aldermen ponder the future of the former First Baptist Church building, they have decided to let the public tour the building.

Aldermen at Tuesday’s Committee of the Whole meeting decided to hold an open house at 6:30 p.m. July 30.

At the same time, city officials continue to weigh what to do with the building.

“I don’t think we are in any financial position to dump a lot of money in this,” Batavia Mayor Jeff Schielke said at the meeting.

Seventh Ward Alderman Dave Brown said the public needs to see inside the building before any decision is made on what to do with it.

“I think an open house for the public is certainly necessary,” Brown said.

A Northbrook-based firm has estimated it will cost at least $3.1 million to repair the former First Baptist Church building at the corner of Washington and Wilson streets in downtown Batavia so the building can be reused.

The city has owned the facility since 2006, including the late 19th century original church, a north addition built

in the 1930s and a classroom wing built around 1959. The Batavia City Council recently hired WJE to assess the building’s condition.

WJE has inspected the building, and the firm recommended repairs be made to the exterior and interior of the 1889 church, 1930s addition and 1959 classroom wing, as well as the building’s mechanical systems.

The firm recommended the city budget be between $3.1 million and $3.5 million for the work.

“Much of the recommended repair work is dependent upon the future adaptive reuse of the building and the intended function,” the firm stated in its report.

However, WJE listed an estimated $775,000 in repairs that need to be done to prevent additional damage to the building materials or features. The repairs include a new roof; gutter repairs and new downspouts at the 1889 church; a new roof; scuppers and downspouts at the 1959 addition; masonry lintel repairs at the 1930s addition; and lintel repairs at the 1959 addition.

Batavia-based Alpine Demolition Services has submitted an estimate of $146,250 to demolish the property.

ENEVA – At the ribbon-cutting and dedication ceremony for the rebuilt Island Park North Bridge on Saturday, Larry Gabriel, the Geneva Park District superintendent of parks and properties, was doing business as usual – getting everything ready.

“I had gone down there with my two foremen, and we were setting up a canopy and getting the red ribbon staged and cleaning up,” Gabriel said. “A few guests were going to stop by, and Geneva Park District Executive Director Sheavoun Lambillotte started reading off the names of people included in the project. She got down to my name and … and I was waiting for her to move on.”

Gabriel said he recalled looking at Lambillotte and wondering, “Why do you keep talking about me?”

And then Lambillotte got to the part about the park commissioners deciding to name the bridge the Larry Gabriel Bridge in recognition of his supervision of this monumental project, as well as his 30-plus years of dedication to the Geneva Park District.

“I was stunned. Flabbergasted. Completely taken aback,” Gabriel said. “To my good fortune, I was not asked to step up and speak.”

Replacing the bridge that was built in 1931 was no small undertaking. The park district received a $729,110 Federal Transportation Enhancement Grant in 2010, which paid for 80 percent of the project, after structural testing confirmed it no longer was safe and needed to be replaced.

The bridge is considered a vital link to more than 100 miles of the Fox River Trail network, as well as the juncture of the trail and the Illinois Prairie Path, officials said.

The actual construction began in late spring 2012 and was completed by October, with Gabriel overseeing the project every step of the way from start to finish.

Gabriel, 55, of Batavia, said he will have been an employee of the park district for 34 years on Sept. 3. He started in 1979 as a horticulturalist, then was appointed to foreman at Peck Farm Park and then in 2001 was promoted to superintendent when Don

Forni retired.

Gabriel’s first responsibility at the park district was maintaining the gardens in front of the now-closed Mill Race Inn. “All the times I looked at that particular bridge, when I was planting flowers or doing other maintenance work – to think that I would someday be involved in rebuilding that entire structure,” Gabriel said. “Think of how farfetched that sounds. And being down there on Saturday,

and the bridge being named after me – that is as close to surreal as you could get.”

Gabriel noted that it was a good thing Geneva Park District names significant facilities after longtime devoted employees while they still are alive. Among those are the Don Forni Park, the Kay Lovett Park, Stan Esping Park and Stephen D. Persinger Recreation Center.

Lambillotte said Gabriel’s service of more than three decades is worthy of accolades.

But he also was integral to the bridge project, she said, attending every city meeting, public meeting, construction meeting and all the meetings that followed to see the project through.

“We thought it was a good opportunity, not only for completing that one project, but also for his 30 years working for the park district,” Lambillotte said.

“[We] could [not] have asked for an employee as devoted as Larry.”

Gabriel still is getting used to the idea that the bridge will bear his name on two plaques, one on each end.

“This is a monumental milestone in my career,” Gabriel said. “I had no idea this would happen. My family knew. I looked around and wondered, ‘Why are all these people here?’ A couple of my friends, a few of my family members, my wife. She had been part of this three- to four-month process of putting this all together behind the scenes.”

It must have been a tough secret to keep, he said.

“My wife said it was absolutely agonizing at times; she was so worried she would slip up,” Gabriel said.

“The office staff did the same thing. But I was absolutely clueless.”

Officials: Violent crime dips Judge dismisses town years after program’s launch home association case GENEVA

By NICOLE WESKERNA nweskerna@shawmedia.com ST. CHARLES – After six years of targeting gangs in Aurora, law enforcement officials say they’ve seen a dramatic reduction in the city’s street gang presence and the number of violent crimes.

Kane County State’s Attorney Joe McMahon was joined by Aurora Police Chief Gregory Thomas and First Assistant State’s Attorney Jody Gleason on Tuesday in St. Charles to talk to reporters about Operation First-Degree Burn, a collaborative endeavor that has targeted the gang presence in Kane County, particularly in Aurora.

“There were well over 1,000 gang members back in the day,” Thomas said. “Now there are a little over 300.”

He said the gang problem was at its height in the late 1990s and early 2000s, when the city of Aurora saw as many 26 murders – many of

which were gang-related – in 1996 and again in 2002.

In the six years since the operation started, several agencies – including the Kane County State’s Attorney Office, the Kane County Sheriff’s Office, the Aurora Police Department and the Federal Bureau of Investigations – have filed charges in nearly two dozen murder cold cases.

The operation has netted 16 felony convictions, and eight defendants received 19- to 20-year prison sentences, and two more defendants were sentenced to or face life prison sentences.

“We’ve taken a lot of very bad people off the streets for a very long time,” McMahon said.

But McMahon said the work doesn’t stop there.

He said law enforcement officials plan to continue their outreach to service organizations and schools to warn against the ramifications of becoming gang members.

McMahon said a civil lawsuit that was filed in May is one way to stay proactive when it comes to decreasing the street gang presence in Kane County.

On May 24, the city of Aurora filed an injunction against members of the Latin Kings, naming more than 30 members of the gang.

The injunction bars members of that gang from doing multiple activities, such as “standing, sitting, walking, driving, gathering, meeting or appearing anywhere in public view with the Latin Kings,” within the city of Aurora, according to the injunction.

“We continue to have to work through community groups and schools, particularly with late grade-school and middle-school students, to let them know they have other options” besides joining a gang, McMahon said.

“That’s how you continue to work with the community.”

By NICOLE WESKERNA nweskerna@shawmedia.com GENEVA – A dispute between a bank and homeowners in a Geneva subdivision over who should control a town home association concluded in court last week when a judge dismissed the case with prejudice.

The case was brought

by Old Second National Bank against the several homeowners who last year formed a new Prairie Ridge Townhome Owners Association, which, according to the complaint, was a “rogue board” that was created without authority.

The dispute centered on which party – the bank’s third-party manager or an elected homeowners association that formed last year – was in control of managing fees from the subdivision’s homeowners association.

The complaint of the plaintiff – the bank-run Prairie Ridge Townhome Owners Association – against the defendants – several homeowners who formed a new town home association – was dismissed with prejudice by Judge David Akemann on

June 25. Dismissing the case with prejudice bars a party from refiling the case.

The dispute surfaced after homeowners in the subdivision, at the corner of Bricher and Peck roads, were unhappy about the way their subdivision’s association had been managed since Old Second National Bank had assigned a third-party affiliate, Arris Management, to run the association.

Homeowners in the subdivision decided to create their own board to handle the association fees and a bank account, and that board has handled the account for the past year.

The bank became involved in the town home association when it took control of property in the subdivision after developer John Henry Homes Inc. had been foreclosed on before the subdivision was completed.

Old Second National Bank owns three partially completed homes and 52 vacant lots in the Prairie Ridge Townhomes Development as a result of the foreclosure.

bound traffic on North Second and Third Avenues at Main Street until traffic is cleared from the park and surrounding areas.

City officials are not allowing people to view the fireworks from the fifth level of the parking garage on First Street, nor from the bicycle bridge underneath the railroad trestle for safety reasons. The bicycle bridge will be closed at 9 a.m., but will reopen immediately after the fireworks display is over.

Long traffic delays are expected following the fireworks show, and city officials are encouraging drivers to consider alternative routes.

The St. Charles Police Department is also reminding motorists to always buckle up and don’t drink and drive. Extra patrols will be out through the end of this weekend to catch drivers who drink or don’t wear a seat belt.

Fourth of July classic car show scheduled in downtown Batavia

ST. CHARLES – The annual St. Charles Fourth of July celebration includes activities throughout the day, ending with a fireworks extravaganza that will best be seen from Pottawatomie Park and Ferson Creek Park.

Ferson Creek Park is on Route 31, east of Wildrose Springs Drive, St. Charles.

Pottawatomie Park, at North Avenue and North Second Avenue in St. Charles, will open at 8 a.m. Thursday with picnic tables available on a first-come, first-served basis.

In order to handle the larger volume of traffic expected over the Fourth of July holiday near Pottawatomie Park, officials have posted parking and traffic restrictions on several streets.

lease from the St. Charles Police Department, parking restrictions will be in place Thursday on North Second Avenue from Iroquois Avenue to Main Street; on North Third Avenue from Johnor Avenue to Main Street; and on Iroquois Avenue, Bent Avenue, Fulton Avenue, Park Avenue, Chestnut Avenue, State Avenue, Cedar Avenue and North Fourth Avenue in the areas surrounding the park.

Additionally, parking restrictions will extend to North Second Street, from Main Street north to the city limits.

Vehicles parked in designated no-parking zones will be towed.

City officials will be posted at key intersections on Fifth Avenue and Main Street to assist pedestrians and vehicle traffic after the fireworks show.

OPINIONS LETTERS TO THE EDITOR Approach topic objectively To the Editor: John Strauss hits the nail on the head with this statement in his recent letter to the editor (Kane County Chronicle, June 26, 2013): “We were taught that God made all of us, not some of us or most of us but ‘ALL’ of us.” So much for the common sense in his letter.

He says, “Some statistics indicate that roughly 5 to 10 percent of us are born gay.” That may be, but there are also statistics that tell us a significant number of homosexuals were sexually abused as children.

How many children are born blind? Deaf? Do we insist that the blind have the right to drive a car, or that the deaf have a right to a job that demands good hearing? Why not? God made them, too, right?

John continues: “I think our nation would be best served if religious leaders would be quiet and allow

our secular state to exhibit the compassion and inclusiveness that eludes them.” An organization that is part of our “secular state” is called the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention. Why should we ignore what they say about the homosexual lifestyle? Why are folks who even mention such things called homophobes, while those who promote this lifestyle, which the secular CDC labels as high-risk, are seen as compassionate?

What’s the next compassionate thing we’ll be encouraging? Sitting by silently as children dash out onto busy streets (chasing a ball or one another), rather than risk hurting their feelings by yelling to them?

Finally, John says, “ … in this country, we have separation of church and state.” Yes, we do have this separation, but not as envisioned by folks like Mr. Strauss. Anyone who thinks otherwise needs to

GOOD GRIEF In recent weeks, a flood of media accounts have emerged about the three young women in Cleveland, who escaped after a decade of barbaric imprisonment. Ariel Castro has been charged in connection with the case.

But none of those stories have scratched the surface of the grief that they – or the 6-year-old daughter of one of the women – are experiencing over the extraordinarily joyous change in their situations.

By now, you are quite likely scratching your head. That is because most everyone thinks of grief only in terms of negative events, such as the unspeakable years of abuse that those three survivors endured or the loss of a loved one through death.

The truth is that we grieve

explain why one of the very authors of the First Amendment, Fisher Ames, so strongly supported the continued use of the Bible in public schools. Once that explanation is provided, they can also try deciphering this from our first chief justice of the Supreme Court, John Jay: “Providence has given to our people the choice of their rulers. And it is the duty, as well as the privilege and interest, of a Christian nation to select and prefer Christians for their rulers.”

There are countless other quotes from our founding era that fly in the face of how so many today interpret that “separation” idea.

All one need do is approach the topic objectively and read up on American history.

GUEST VIEW Vicki Alden all changes. Yes, this includes crises such as the death of someone dear to us or the loss of a job. But it also extends to happy events, such as the birth of a child, a promotion at work or moving into our dream house.

Grief is the natural reaction to change because in any change we lose something and we need to adjust to something new. It can be defined as the period of adjustment from what was to what is now.

With the arrival of a baby, for example, there is elation over welcoming a new family member.

However, we are also

losing at least some of what life was like before – doing what we want to do when we want to do it, having only our significant other to take into consideration when making decisions, getting a good, uninterrupted night’s sleep.

Grief is not something we can control. It just happens.

It can, and usually does, turn our world upside down. It can be frustrating, maddening, scary and sad. It does, however, assist us in releasing what was and incorporating the new into our experience.

Here are some tips on coming to terms with grief: 1. Be patient with yourself.

There is no timeline for grief.

2. Do what’s right for you. Those close to you want to feel better themselves and often can’t until you feel better. They will encourage you

to get over it or voice concern that it’s taking you too long, that you need to snap out of it. Remember, your journey through grief needs to be your journey. You might thank people for their concern, but inwardly know you have to process your loss yourself.

3. Take care of you – give yourself any special attention you need. You need lots of tender, loving care while grieving. TLC from others is super, but you also need to provide yourself with TLC. Do you like bubble baths or curling up with a good book, or some special comfort food that you occasionally indulge in? Do what helps you feel good.

4. If you are unable to function in your daily life, or are struggling to move on a little at a time, seek profes-

sional help from a therapist/ counselor.

These recommendations may fly in the face of your previous notions about grief.

After all, problems are solved, nice and neat, in an hour or two on our favorite TV shows.

But in a society that notoriously tries to sell us on the “quick-fix” lie, we do well to embrace this truth – we are almost always done with grief before it is done with us.

Clowning around

Granddaughters carry on Sugar Grove bike parade

By AL LAGATOLLA alagatolla@shawmedia.com SUGAR GROVE – Alyssa McCannon was 5 years old when she told her grandmother that it’d be great to have a bike parade in Sugar Grove. She said she had experienced one in Yorkville and wanted to know why her town didn’t have one.

Not all grandmothers would take that as a call to action, but Alyssa’s grandmother is Karen McCannon, also known as JoJo the Clown. It wasn’t long before the Sugar Grove Fourth of July Bike Parade was born.

Alyssa said she knows she’s fortunate to be in such a situation.

“Most people can’t go around saying, ‘My grandma’s a clown,’ ” she said.

“It’s nice having a clown as a grandma. … There’s never a dull moment.”

The parade tradition continues this year, with the parade lineup starting at 12:30 p.m. Thursday at John Shields Elementary School, 85 S. Main St., Sugar Grove. The parade starts at 1 p.m. This year’s event is a fundraiser for the Between Friends Food Pantry in Sugar Grove, and participants are urged to bring jars of pasta sauce or peanut butter or other donations. Participants also could opt to donate $1. Alyssa said peanut butter and pasta sauce are the most popular items at the food pantry.

Health concerns likely will force JoJo to miss the parade for the second consecutive year, but her granddaughters, Alyssa, 15, and Sammie, 11, said they will welcome JoJo’s “clown friends” for the event – including Calico Rose, Mumbles and Tiny T. Last week, the girls were washing JoJo’s “Clown Victoria” golf cart for the event in front of their grandma’s house, which is decked out in anticipation of the event. A sign urges passersby to go to the bike parade, and the front of the house was decked out in red, white and blue bunting.

County Board member who founded the Between Friends Food Pantry, said it’s no surprise that the McCannon girls would take charge of the parade and also add donations to the food pantry as part of it.

Taylor said Karen McCannon and her grandchildren are regulars as volunteers at the food pantry.

“Her grandkids are awesome,” Taylor said of JoJo the Clown.

Taylor said the girls have seen the hard work that JoJo puts into her endeavors, and they have followed her lead at the food pantry.

Taylor said they will have a successful bike parade this year.

“They’re gonna keep the

train moving,” Taylor said.

Alyssa and Sammie said the parade is a growing event, and they are excited to greet all who want to participate. The girls were thrilled to point out that a parrot once was part of the parade. Dogs can participate. Alyssa said a float took part in last year’s event and Sammie stressed that all types of bikes can be involved.

“Motorcycles are welcome,” Sammie said.

Participants don’t have to be from Sugar Grove. The idea is to get together and have some fun. That’s something the girls learned growing up around a clown, and the “Clown Victoria” reflects that. It once was red, the girls

said, but now it is white with polka dots. It’s covered in American flags and crafted flowers. The gas pedal is a big clown foot. A big clown nose is in the front.

It’s all in the spirit of the event, the girls said, and also the way that JoJo is all the time.

“Even when she’s not a clown, she’s still clowning around,” Alyssa said.

She said that the girls had a cupcake contest in which they were to feed each other cupcakes in the cleanest way possible. Instead, Alyssa said, with urging from JoJo, she smashed a cupcake in her sister’s face.

“It’s nice having a clown as a grandma,” Alyssa said.

Elliott said if they accumulate any leftover donations, she’d like to put that money toward a scholarship in Caitlyn’s name, possibly to help a student who might not otherwise be able to afford to be a part of the school’s cheer program.

ELBURN – The village took a step toward the upgrade of its wastewater treatment plant – a move that ultimately would cost millions of dollars and promises to significantly increase residents’ water bills, although that figure might change as the village grows.

Also at Monday’s Village Board meeting, Village President Dave Anderson said the village was filing a legal complaint against a massage parlor in town, on the grounds that it is not properly zoned for the area in which it sits on Route 38.

The massage parlor, which is just east of Route 47, has been open for months, but it has gone through recent changes, moving its focus from more of a nail salon to a massage business. Village attorney Bob Britz said both the property owner and the business owner would be named as defendants. He said the complaint would be filed this week.

“We’re asking the court for an order to cease and desist,” Britz said.

The talks on the wastewater treatment facility were part of an ongoing discussion with Sugar Grove-based Engineering Enterprises Inc. On Monday, trustees OK’d the engineering work required for the project. In April, the board talked of plans for the overall project that would add up to $7.65 million. Of that, the village has about $1.5 million available.

To pay for the remaining costs of more than $6 million, the village would need to secure loans, and to pay

for those loans, the village would have to raise fees. The discussion in April suggested that could be as much as $40 a month for some customers, but officials stress that the cost could go down as the village grows, because there would be more residents to help pay down the fees.

Trustee Ken Anderson asked whether the payments could be adjusted if the village added a significant amount of new residents, as is expected when building can begin for the Elburn Station project – a development that potentially could double the population of the village. John Nevenhoven, the village’s superintendent of public works, said that could happen.

“If we added 500 households tomorrow, the amount of money we need to collect would be divided by 2,500 instead of 2,000 [households],” Nevenhoven said.

He said if there was a period of growth, the village could examine the fees twice a year instead of once a year.

Officials from EEI were in attendance, and the village has said the modernization of the plant is necessary and is not designed to increase capacity and is not necessary because of growth.

“It makes no difference whether we have zero growth or we quadruple the size of the village,” Dave Anderson said. “We have to do this.”

No costs would go up before May 2014, as the rates for the current year are in place, and there are no plans to change them. But if the plan ultimately is approved, fees could start going up, gradually, until the village would begin paying back the loans, possibly in 2015.

SUGAR GROVE – When Mary Elliott heard about the accident that killed 13-year-old Caitlyn Phillips in the spring, Elliott said she immediately thought about how happy Caitlyn was while practicing with her cheer squad outside at Harter Middle School in Sugar Grove.

So when Elliott thought about planting a tree or a garden in Caitlyn’s memory, she thought Caitlyn that spot – just outside of the Phillips school’s cafeteria – would be the most fitting.

“She was just so happy and bubbly and sweet, and we wanted to pay tribute in a spot that kind of still had her happiness there,” she said.

Phillips, 13, of Elburn, died in late April after colliding with a car while in-line skating a few blocks from her home.

Elliott, whose daughter was on the cheer squad with Caitlyn, mobilized an effort to create the Caitlyn Phillips Memorial Garden, and she hopes to have a dedication ceremony

by mid-August. She said talks of the memorial garden led the Kaneland Youth Football League to donate $200, and Caitlyn’s friends helped raise more than $420 during school lunch periods.

They now have a total of $790 to put toward the garden, and landscaper John Alagna, whose daughter knew Caitlyn, decided to do the landscaping and design for free.

Many others, including the Elburn Lions Club and Ream’s Elburn Market, have stepped up to help, too, Elliott added.

Alagna said Roger Storck from American Tree and Turf in Sugar Grove plans to dedicate a tree and has worked on the garden with Alagna.

He said because Caitlyn’s favorite color was yellow, he plans to incorporate that color into the garden wherever he can.

He plans to include elements that can be enjoyed through all four seasons by adding plants with holly berries and seeds that attract birds in the winter.

Plans also include double knockout roses in pinks and purples, as well as greenery with hints of yellow.

Alagna said it was “an honor” to help design the garden.

The funding is provided through the Federal Emergency Management Agency, part of the Department of Homeland Security’s Assistance to Firefighters Grant, which intends to strengthen the nation’s overall response to fire and fire-related hazards.

Fire Chief Kevin Peterson said the grant was for a little less than his application, but “I’m far from complaining.”

“Air packs are what we use when we actually go into a fire.

It’s what firefighters use as a breathing apparatus, so they don’t get sick from the smoke,” Peterson said. “We do have air packs now, but ours are getting old.”

Maple Park’s air packs are getting close to 12 years – but at $6,000 apiece, there was no money in the budget to buy new ones, Peterson said.

“Without the grant, we would not be able to purchase them,” he said.

The air packs are fitted with a bottle of air that lasts 30 minutes. It gives a warning when the bottle is half way through then another with five minutes to spare, so the firefighter has time to get out,

Peterson said.

The district refills the bottles for continued use, he said.

The National Fire Protection Association also calls for firefighters to not just get a new bottle and go back into a fire, but to have rehabilitation.

Peterson said that occurs with a medical unit that checks fluids and vitals before the firefighter is cleared to go back into the fire.

“When you’ve seen a lot of different fire departments and more engine crews at a fire, that’s why,” Peterson said.

“Depending on the fire, we can go through five or six different crews.”

Maple Park to consider allowing video gambling

By JONATHAN BILYK jbilyk@shawmedia.com MAPLE PARK – The village soon could allow bars and other establishments to offer video gambling to patrons.

The Maple Park Village Board is scheduled to discuss the matter with Maple Park police Chief Michael Acosta at its July 16 Committee of the Whole meeting, when it is anticipated that village trustees will consider a “sample ordinance” allowing certain businesses to operate video gambling machines.

Maple Park was one of several local communities that banned the machines at establishments within their limits when the state of Illinois first rolled out the vid-

eo gambling program a few years ago.

However, in recent months, neighboring communities including Elburn and Sugar Grove, have reversed their bans.

Earlier this spring, representatives of the Maple Park American Legion Post 312 approached the Village Board to request that the village allow their Legion Hall to install and operate video gambling machines, like Legion halls elsewhere in the region.

Maple Park Village President Kathy Curtis did not return messages requesting comment on the matter Tuesday.

But Acosta said he intends to tell the Village Board that he has no problems with the idea of allowing the ma-

chines in Maple Park.

He noted that the village suffered in the past from illegal gambling operations run at a tavern that formerly operated in Maple Park.

A raid in 2004 at the former D.J.’s Tavern led to charges against Mark Delaney, a former Maple Park village president and other defendants associated with the bar.

But Acosta said these video gambling machines would be different because they would be legal, licensed and regulated by the state.

“I have no problems with them; no issues with it at all,” Acosta said.

He said he believes as many as three Maple Park establishments could operate the machines.

Deadline for federal disaster aid extended The deadline to apply for federal flood disaster aid for people affected by April flooding has been extended to July 24.

The state requested the extension Monday to enable people affected by flooding in

federally designated counties to seek grants and loans to help with their recovery.

Nature center offers five-day camps ST. CHARLES – During fiveday nature camps at Creek Bend Nature Center, children will explore the woods and fields with the Forest Preserve District of Kane County’s naturalist staff.

Through 36 openings this season, the safe path to bragging rights is a guess in the neigborhood of 5,465 fans.

That’s the average attendance at Fifth Third Bank Ballpark, a figure 590 fans ahead of the same juncture last season.

Cougars general manager Curtis Haug can’t help feeling blue when crunching the numbers, a nod to the predominant color of the parent club residing about an hour down the road. Haug expected a bump when the Cougars and Cubs announced a two-year player-development contract in September, which helps explain his comfort in discussing it.

“There’s really no other way to say it other than the fact that overall, the ticket sales are up significantly, and they continue to trend that way,” Haug said. “Now, if we could just get Mother Nature to cooperate with us a little bit, I think we’ll have a huge, huge second half of the season.”

The Midwest League waded through more rainouts in April than during the entire 2012 season, a statistic underscored by the Cougars’ 70 for 70 perfection in fitting in home games last year.

The club has 31 scheduled home games remaining in the second half, setting its maximum of 2013 openings at 67.

Either way, executives focus on the average.

With home series set for five of the season’s final nine weekends – including those over the Independence Day and Labor Day holidays – Haug is optimistic the Cougars can supplant last season’s average of 5,587, which ranked third in the 16-team MWL. Staying ahead of the weather

will help, which is a focus around the league after a wet first half.

“It wasn’t real bad, but we’re in the red a little bit,” MWL president George Spelius said. “I’m sure we’ll catch up with it or [be] close to it, you know what I mean.”

Since relocating from Wausau, Wis., to Geneva before the 1991 season, the Cougars have provided the MWL with a fan base that routinely pulls the league’s average attendance higher.

Last season marked the first time the Cougars fell below 400,040 fans since 1993. The team attracted at least 500,000

fans from 2001-06, when it was affiliated with Florida and Oakland.

Throw in the Cubs connection and a stable of highly touted prospects that includes center fielder Albert Almora and first baseman Dan Vogelbach, and Haug only figured the interest would grow. Then again, this already was one of the pre-eminent operations in the minor leagues.

“Whether it’s the billboards that the Cubs have in the outfield or the logos in the lawn area or the fans sitting in the seats that are wearing Cubs paraphernalia – the jerseys and the T-shirts and the caps and all that – it’s definitely noticeable,” Haug said.

“But there’s still that, ‘Hey, we’re the Cougars and we’ve got a great brand and we’ve been here 23 seasons.’ But being affiliated with the Cubs is definitely a great thing for us.”

The game-day experience

also excites visiting players.

Sam Roberts, a second baseman in the Oakland organization, played with Burlington at the end of last season and now suits up for Beloit after the A’s also signed a new PDC in September.

Neither city averaged more than 1,096 fans from 2010-12.

“When we did stay, the hotel’s really nice [at Pheasant Run Resort],” Roberts said.

“Normally, you get a pretty good crowd. They’re always into it, so I enjoy it, for the most part.”

Beloit returns to Geneva in late August, closing out a summer in which the Cougars expect to attract the franchise’s 10 millionth fan.

“We’ve got a lot in store in the second half, and we’re looking forward to it,” Haug said. “And we’re looking forward to seeing people here at the ballpark enjoying themselves.”

Bragg’s big night powers Post 342 Geneva product notches 3 hits, draws coach’s plaudits for glovework, too

By DENNIS D. JACOBS editorial@kcchronicle.com ST. CHARLES – If you’re going to be compared to a former Major League Baseball player, you can’t do much better than being compared to Willie Mays.

Tuesday at St. Charles North High School, Anthony Bragg fielded, hit, and even ran like the Giants’ Hall of Famer to lead St. Charles Post 342 to a 5-1 victory over Hampshire Post 680 in American Legion baseball.

Bragg was 3 for 3 at the plate with a pair of A. Bragg doubles and three RBIs. He singled home the first two runs of the game in the bottom of the first inning, doubled and scored in the fourth, and doubled to drive in a run in the

sixth. The first baseman also stole a base and made a couple of nice overthe-shoulder catches of foul pops.

“He’s been playing very well the last two weeks,” Post 342 coach Dale Wilderspin said. “He’s picked it up with the bat and defensively he’s been really, really good. He made two catches over the shoulder tonight. He almost looked like Willie Mays out there. He’s very comfortable making that play.”

Bragg said it’s a tough play to practice.

“It’s really just kind of an instinct thing,” he said. “You kind of run over there and throw your mitt up and hope it lands in there.”

Bragg graduated from Geneva High School this spring. He’s one of six former Vikings on the Post 342 roster, which is dominated by past and present St. Charles North players.

“You’re kind of getting to know

your rivals,” Bragg said. “It’s kind of cool getting to know them, talking with them, even talking about games that have happened in the past. It’s a good experience.”

Bragg’s Geneva classmate Mitch Endriukaitis plated him in the first inning with a bloop double down the right field line to give St. Charles (125 overall, 4-2 District 11) a quick 3-0 advantage.

“That’s something we need to do,” Wilderspin said. “Obviously, you get tired of chasing after a while and the last few games we’ve had that problem where we’ve gotten behind early and it makes it tough as far as being aggressive on the bases and those types of things.”

Those early runs would be the only support Post 342 pitchers Collin Peterson and P.J. O’Brien would need. Peterson pitched the first 3 2/3 innings, allowing one run on four hits. O’Brien

came on with the bases loaded and two outs and St. Charles protecting a 3-1 lead in the fourth. He got a soft liner to Bragg on his first pitch to end the threat.

“We’ve been trying to get Collin out [on the mound] for the last couple weeks,” Wilderspin said. “He’s got a little soreness in his arm, so it was nice for him to get out and throw three or four innings and shake some of the rust off. P.J. came in and did a nice job. He’s been doing a good job for us all season.”

Kyle Carbone took the loss for Hampshire (1-3 Division 11), but pitched well after the first inning. He gave up six hits in six innings of work.

Steven de la Torriente drove in a run for Post 342 with a groundout in the fourth.

New Amish mystery mixes worlds

P.L. Gaus’ newest Amish mystery, “The Names of Our Tears,” has a great thing going with his beautifully evoked novels set amid the society of the “Plain People” in Holmes County, Ohio.

It is the Amish response to the murder of one of their own, 19-yearold Ruth Zook, that interests us. She has been shot in the head and then brutally trampled by her terrified horse. The old Amish widower Mervin Byler, who is on his way to buy homemade chocolates from the widow Stutzman, discovers her mutilated body. A lavishly detailed procedural commences.

Local detectives, the DEA and the EPA all get involved when the cause of the poisoned watering pond on the Zook farm is found to be cocaine. Ruth must have unknowingly carried the cocaine back from a trip to the Florida panhandle. When she realizes what she has, she throws the drugs into the pond. A short time later, she is shot dead.

The most compelling character among the many for whom this murder is unrelenting torment is a young Amish orphan named Emma Wengard. Her family, riding home in a buggy, had been slain by a speeding tractor-trailer truck. A traumatized Emma, taken in by the Zooks, speaks to no one but Ruth. When Ruth is killed, Emma withdraws completely in her desire to end her suffering and join Ruth.

Gaus presents fascinating detail about an Amish society that balances “modern” surroundings with its own way of life, about a strong communal bond, about daily farm life where even a trip in a buggy can be life threatening. Ruth’s body, for example, when it is finally returned to the farm, must be packed on ice during the wake since there is no electricity to keep the surroundings cool and no embalming.

Ruth is one of several unknowing Amish girls caught up in the transport of cocaine to Ohio from their vacation spot in Florida. Two other young women go missing and rural

Ricky Niell joins officers in Florida to follow the slim leads there, while the rest of the crew interviews reluctant family that refuses, for example, to cooperate with a sketch artist because they do not condone graven images.

They do find both missing girls only to see both escape under their watch.

Gaus does a good job capturing their frustrations.

Bitter, wet April weather confounds everything. In fact, Gaus throws the proverbial book at the detectives and sheriff’s department.

The EPA takes control of the Zook farm because of the poisoned pond, making further investigation difficult at the same time that they torment the bereaved extended family gathering to mourn Ruth. Flooding, sleet, downpours and occasional wet snow drench detectives. Things seem to coalesce into a sodden hopeless mess.

Gaus lets some issues resolve but others remain mysteries, not so much because he has another book in mind but because this is how life really is in his evenly rendered world where unlike societies intersect and people courageously push on despite harsh realities.

Dear Reader: Advances in cancer treatment and earlier detection are allowing more people to live longer after a cancer diagnosis. Today, more than 12 million Americans are cancer survivors.

Recently, the American Cancer Society (ACS) reviewed and summarized the scientific evidence about the role of diet and exercise for cancer survivors.

They found that the same things that prevent cancer from developing in the first place also help keep it from coming back.

The ACS published its findings in a report called “Nutrition and Physical Activity Guidelines for Cancer Survivors.”

• Many cancer survivors have trouble taking in enough calories each day. Eating smaller and more frequent meals can help. Or try special fortified or nutrientdense foods.

• Use dietary supplements cautiously. Taking more than the recommended daily amounts (RDA) of vitamins and minerals does not improve treatment outcomes or long-term survival.

In fact, it can interfere with some cancer treatments. For example, taking a beta-carotene supplement may encourage the growth of lung cancer.

• Exercise can help fight fatigue, keep you functioning and improve your quality of life.

Discuss when to start exercising, and how much, with your

doctor.

• Obesity appears to increase the risk of breast (and possibly other) cancer recurrence.

Losing weight and keeping it off can help improve survival.

When some of my patients hear advice like the ACS has given, they are skeptical. To them, cancer is a powerful force, and it seems unlikely that a healthy lifestyle could do much to tame it. I tell them that the advice is supported by large and well-done scientific studies.

There is little doubt from those studies, for example, that survivors of breast cancer who are overweight have a worse prognosis than those of normal weight. Or that those who exercise regularly have a better prognosis than those who don’t.

We even are beginning to understand why. A research study was published recently which showed regular exercise leads to hormonal changes that discourage the growth of breast cancer cells. It’s not anecdotal: It’s science.

‘Pothead’ reveals positive side to smoking marijuana Dr. Wallace: I’ve been reading your teen column for quite some time and some things you say are excellent, but other things need additional research.

First of all, I’m a “pothead” and have been enjoying smoking marijuana for more than two years.

I love the wonderful feeling I get when enjoying the mellow effect of that wonderful weed. You always write about the “evils” of being a pothead but you never say anything positive about pot.

If you have followed the use of marijuana throughout the world, you will have discovered that marijuana use is being accepted more and more, even in the good old USA. Hopefully, marijuana use will soon be accepted as a legal way to feel good in our progressive country.

Dear Erin: I appreciate your view of using marijuana, and that you enjoy being a “pothead.”

I agree that marijuana use in the United States has increased in the past several years, and the penalties for possession are much less severe. I’m also aware that several industrial countries have legalized the use of marijuana, and it’s possible that eventually it will be legalized in the U.S. My main concern about the use of marijuana, especially by young adults, is that the use of marijuana is a health issue.

Medical research has proven that one marijuana cigarette can cause as much lung inflammation as seven to 20 cigarettes. It all depends how deeply the user inhales. Those who have smoked 10 or more marijuana cigarettes weekly for five years were found to

Smoke a marijuana cigarette once a month – no big health problem; smoke pot regularly (twice a week or more) – things become worrisome.

Marijuana users are fortunate that marijuana is not physically addictive. That’s why you don’t smoke pot three or four times a day, but it is what we call psychologically addictive. That’s why most pot smokers smoke on a regular, but not daily, basis.

One of the greatest highs is accomplished when you offer aid and comfort to someone in need. Give it a try. It just might make you forget all about smoking marijuana!

Garry Kasparov, many people’s choice as the best chess player ever, said: “Chess helps you to concentrate, improve your logic. It teaches you to play by the rules and take responsibility for your actions, how to problem-solve in an uncertain environment.”

Bridge players can relate to that. Interestingly, though, the environment is less certain in bridge, where there are unseen cards, than in chess, where the position of every piece is known.

Some chess games feature a sacrifice, purposely losing a piece. This is much less common in bridge, but can be required – as in this deal. South is in three no-trump. West leads the spade queen. What is South’s best line of play, and how can East foil that plan?

South, with seven top tricks (two spades, two hearts and three diamonds), must establish two club tricks to get home.

The best way to do that is low to dummy’s king on the first round.

But even if South can succeed, he will lose the lead twice. There is a risk that the defenders will establish and run West’s spade suit.

In this situation, with two key-cards to dislodge, declarer usually should duck the first trick.

After taking the second spade in his hand, South plays a club to dummy’s king. Now is the key moment. East must realize that if declarer has the club ace, his queen is worthless. He must sacrifice his queen under dummy’s king. Here, this gives West two club entries, one to establish his spades and one to cash the winners.

Note that if East retains his club queen, he wins the second club and does not have a spade to lead. Then the contract makes.

Ream’s owners open up about parking lot ELBURN – A truck from Ream’s Elburn Market now sits in the parking lot on the east side of Route 47 in downtown Elburn, and – for now at least – customers of the award-winning meat market will have plenty of room to park in the downtown area.

Last month, a “sold” sign appeared in the lot, and the Reams said they were buying the lot, with the intention of moving across the street, a story we reported in the Kane County Chronicle.

Randy Ream on Tuesday confirmed the lot now belongs to the Reams, but it will be a while before there will be any building. So, for now, the lot will be available for customer parking, with some rules – with parking allowed from 8 a.m. to 6 p.m. Monday through Friday and 8 a.m. to 4 p.m. Saturday and Sunday.

It’s a prominent spot in the town – Vestuto Real Estate featured it as “the LAST buildable lot on Main Street in Elburn” on its website – and it was a focus for those who aimed to boost the number of parking spaces in town.

So what will become of the existing building once a new market is built and the Reams

“It’s kind of an old building; it’s got a lot of character,” he said. “I’m a jazz musician.

I’ll improvise. It could be a steakhouse. It could be a hot dog stand.”

The Corn Boil Medallion Shirlee Guddendorf has searched for the Sugar Grove Corn Boil Medallion before.

But this year, she thought she had a good shot after hearing the first clue. After the second clue, she figured she knew for sure.

Guddendorf journeyed into a patch of prairie near Volunteer Park, near the Sugar Grove Park District building, and found the medallion on a post. Volunteer Park, at 31 Main St. in Sugar Grove, is the site of Corn Boil activities.

As the winner, uddendorf receives $50, and she will be recognized during the Corn Boil opening ceremonies on July 26.

The festival runs through July 28.

The second clue – “The medallion is hidden in its place.

Sugar Grove has a rich history. The goal you seek sometimes has lace and is rich with biodiversity.” – told her it was in the prairie area. She said she figured the clue was talking about Queen Anne’s lace, which is a wildflower or a weed, she said, “depending on your perspective.”

Guddendorf said she regularly attends the Corn Boil.

She said she wasn’t motivated by the rewards of the contest.

“I just like trying to figure out the clues,” she said. “It’s the mystery of it that’s fun, not necessarily winning.”

‘Joseph’ begins next week The Kaneland Community Fine Arts Festival presentation of “Joseph and the Amazing Technicolor Dreamcoat” runs July 12 to 14 and July 19 to 21 at Kaneland High School, 47W326 Keslinger Road, Maple Park.

Shows begin at 7 p.m. Fridays and Saturdays and 2 p.m.
