DOWNERS GROVE – Downers Grove 28-year-old Meghan Lazier has lived in Kabul, Afghanistan, for a year and worked from a cruise liner for a month, among other travels. She hopes her next adventure will give her a closer look at the U.S.’s 50 states.

She has applied for the Millennial Trains Project, a cross-country train ride for the current generation to explore how to make an impact across the United States.

It will depart from San Francisco in August and stop in 10 cities, including Chicago, before ending on the East Coast.

To be accepted on the trip, each young person had to conceive a project they would share with each community the locomotive stops at across the country. Lazier and her project were accepted by the Millennial Trains Project, but she has to raise $5,000 for the organization to take the trip.

“I’m really interested in connecting to other people in my generation who are interested in activism and in change and have that belief of serving their communities,” she said. “And also, because I’ve spent a lot of my 20s traveling, I’ve been able to see a lot of the world. But a lot of places that the train goes, I haven’t necessarily been to.”

Speaker to portray Hamilton as part of Fourth festivities

By ED MCMENAMIN emcmenamin@shawmedia.com DOWNERS GROVE – Whether you side with the political philosophies of Alexander Hamilton, or his ideological rival Thomas Jefferson, it’s difficult to deny Hamilton as the embodiment of the American dream.

For that reason, speaker Terry Lynch chose Hamilton as the Founding Father to portray this year at Fishel Park after the Fourth of July Parade in Downers Grove.

The free patriotic portrayal and speech will go about 25 minutes and begins at 3 p.m.

“I found he’s a pretty fascinating character – warts and all,” Lynch said. “But he truly was the American dream of someone who had nothing and rose to have quite a bit. He’s someone that epitomizes what we all look to do.”

Born out of wedlock in the West Indies, Hamilton served as George Washington’s chief adviser during the Revolutionary War, and then as Washington’s secretary of the treasury.

He founded the nation’s financial system and the Federalist Party, the U.S.’s first political party, before dying in a duel with Vice President Aaron Burr in 1804.

Lynch, 49, has performed annually as a different Founding Father or other historical American for Downers Grove residents on the Fourth of July since 2004.

resident and a former library board member, Carol Doty, said she visited the Arlington Heights library that recently was renovated by the same architecture firm and found a buzzing teen area.

“I was very, very pleased with it,” she said.

The library will not reduce the adult collection, officials said, but the plan would place items on the unused bottom shelves to consolidate the stacks. The children’s collection would be reduced by about 5 percent.

The plan shortens the length of space a person walks after entering before finding the lobby area.

Some residents thought the plan focused too much on the needs of teens and not enough on groups that already use the library heavily.

“I don’t think it’s balanced with the seniors citizens,” resident Janet Janko said. “There’s other services that people need that should be considered.”

She added she doesn’t think adding a teen area will be enough to draw that demographic to the library.

DOWNERS GROVE – Residents packed the Downers Grove Public Library on June 26 to view drawings of the interior renovation that is proposed to modernize the library and expand its user base.

At the meeting, Chicago firm Product Architecture + Design presented the schematics to the library board and fielded questions from about 50 residents.

The board unanimously approved the drawings with a vote. It also unanimously authorized staff to send requests for proposals for construction-management services for the project.

The $2.4 million plan would reconfigure the library’s interior, increasing the study and collaborative spaces and creating an expanded teen area among other changes library officials say are demanded by modern users.

“Library use has changed,” board President Kathleen DiCola said. “People are looking for the library to meet different needs. People use the library as a virtual office, people use the library for tutoring. People want to have space in the library to meet with their friends, to meet with coworkers.”

Resident Jeffrey Crane, who attended the meeting, said the library is on “the right track.”

“I think they’re looking at the library as more of a community center, and that’s probably, in the future, what the library is going to be,” he said.

The plan also consolidates the computer stations and moves the audio-video selection to an adjacent spot. The reconfigured library also would include an expanded vending area with seating, among other changes.

Porter becomes leader of Chiefs of Police group DOWNERS GROVE – Downers Grove Police Chief Robert Porter took office as president of the 1,200-member Illinois Association of Chiefs of Police this month, according to the village.

Porter has been an officer for Downers Grove for more than 25 years, including more than 10 as its police chief.

He has a bachelor’s degree in criminal justice and a master’s degree in public safety administration from Lewis University.

He also is a graduate of Northwestern University’s School of Police Staff and Command and the FBI National Academy. He is a member of the DuPage County Police Chiefs Association and the International Association of Chiefs of Police.

DOWNERS GROVE – Downers Grove-based charity Watts of Love, which brings renewable solar lighting to those without access to electricity, has extended its outreach efforts to Haiti, the poorest country in the Western Hemisphere.

Working through charitable organization GLOW Haiti, Watts of Love delivered solar LED lights to two orphanages and 70 teachers, which will help more than 2,500 children.

The Haitian light drop follows Watts of Love’s first light drop this spring in the Philippines.

The lights provided by the organization last up to 100 hours on a single charge on the lowest output setting. The highest setting offers the equivalent of 500 lumens, or the brightness of a 40-watt light bulb. That brightness is about 10 times brighter than a kerosene lamp.

The Watts of Love solar LED lanterns also have a port for charging cellphones.

Watts of Love accepts private donations.

Downers Grove, Woodridge Qdoba locations closed

By ED MCMENAMIN emcmenamin@shawmedia.com DOWNERS GROVE – Qdoba Mexican Grill restaurants in Downers Grove and Woodridge were among 18 locations in the Chicago area and 67 nationwide that closed Friday.

The Jack in the Box Inc. owned fast-food chain announced the closings this

month and revealed the list of affected stores last week on its Facebook page.

The Downers Grove location, 1400 Butterfield Road, closed about 3 p.m. Friday, along with stores in Woodridge, Elmhurst, Wheaton, Glen Ellyn and Oakbrook Terrace, among others.

The closings come after a review of the restaurants’ sales, cash flow and other per-

formance metrics initiated when new Qdoba President Tim Casey joined in March.

He said in a news release that the company will be able to better focus its advertising and marketing to support its other locations.

Jack in the Box spokesman Brian Luscomb said the company still is deciding what to do with the soon-to-be vacant buildings.

After Friday’s closings, eight Qdobas remain in the Chicago area, six of which are company-run and two of which are franchises.

“Those remaining company locations are performing well,” Luscomb said.

The plan is part of a larger reorganization of the chain that also will include many new locations opening.

At the end of the second

business quarter in 2013, Qdoba had 647 restaurants, 340 of which are company-operated.

Between 70 and 75 new locations are expected to open in fiscal 2013, including about 40 company-owned locations.

In 2014, it expects 60 to 70 new Qdoba restaurants to open, about half of which will be company locations, according to the company.

New Downers Grove businesses announced at economic development luncheon

By ED MCMENAMIN emcmenamin@shawmedia.com DOWNERS GROVE – Village leaders touted an array of business openings and expansions at the annual Downers Grove Economic Development Corp. luncheon, and announced new projects including a Starbucks planned for Ogden Avenue.

Downers Grove EDC President and CEO Michael Cassa said a developer soon will present a plan to the village for the new Starbucks, which will be built on the southwest corner of Prince Street and Ogden Avenue, if approved.

“It is just the first of what I hope will be many other national tenants to locate on Ogden,” he said.

About 160 guests, including several state legislators, village officials and business leaders, attended the event June 26 at the DoubleTree hotel on Butterfield Road. Advocate Health Care President and CEO James Skogsbergh was the keynote speaker.

The EDC is a public-private partnership created in 2006 to attract businesses to the village.

The possible new coffee shop was mentioned among a long list of businesses and corporations that expanded or opened in Downers Grove in the last year, or plan to do so in the near future.

On that list was Fresenius Medical Care, a manufacturer of medical supplies based in Germany, which recently signed a lease to open its new

Downers Grove Public Library patrons can look forward to exciting changes based on ambitious building renovation plans now going forward.

These plans will address three major roles of the contemporary public library: a place to congregate, a place to learn and a place to create.

A place to congregate: Students, business people, COMMUNITY and members of commuVOICE nity groups will find large Rick meeting rooms and a range Ashton of spaces where groups from two to 20 people can gather to meet and work together.

A comfortable cafe-style space with drinks and snacks from vending machines will seat about 20 people. An open, welcoming lobby space in the middle of the ground floor will be a natural meeting spot.

A place to learn: The library will continue its long tradition as provider of a variety of books in a great many subject areas. Fiction and nonfiction books, video materials and recordings, well-organized and well-displayed, will open the way to greater knowledge. Well-informed staff members will move through the building to help learners locate books, reserve a computer for online research or conquer the challenges of a new electronic device. Library customers will learn new information, practice for an examination, or share their own expertise in programs organized by the library and others in the community.

A place to create: Library users always have been involved in creative endeavors. Written works such as term papers, book reports, speeches, sermons and personal research products have been the results. Now these creations also may include music recordings, computer games or video productions, as a new well-equipped media laboratory space, supported by skilled library staff and other experts, helps residents make new creative works.

The plans are in the design development phase, with Product Architecture + Design and the library staff collaborating.

Continued updates will be provided to the community.

Construction is scheduled to begin next February, with completion planned in the fall of 2014.

Baked Apple Breakfast Co. starts day off right DOWNERS GROVE – Does anyone not like breakfast?

The popularity of diners would suggest that not only does everyone love breakfast, but patrons will eat it just about anytime – morning or night.

The thought holds true at The Baked Apple Breakfast Co. in Downers Grove, where breakfast definitely is the specialty, and you can get your favorites right up until close at 3 p.m.

The eatery’s menu is playful and inventive with options such as the Company omelette – apples, cheddar cheese and a dollop of sour cream – and Red Velvet pancakes with a sweet cream cheese spread.

Diners also are treated to plenty of lunch options. Available any time, the luncheon menu includes a well-rounded range of sandwiches, salads, wraps and burgers.

On a recent Saturday trip, a friend and I decided to tackle both.

I ordered the Wild Turkey – a panini-style sandwich of thick-cut roast turkey, bacon and cheddar.

The side options give you a choice between fries and pasta salad. It also comes with a pickle, as all sandwiches should. The turkey was moist and laid on deep, and the bacon retained a good crispiness, even under the pressed panini pressure.

I’m glad I decided to go with the side of fries, because they absolutely stand out at Baked Apple. Long, thin and golden with a crispy crunch, these fried taters come in a bountiful bunch and really hit the spot.

My dining companion was in the breakfast mood and ordered the Uncle Jesse omelette – spinach, tomato and feta cheese.

He really was feeling the hash browns, which, like the fries, were wonderfully crisp, with just the right amount of soft potato inside.

His omelette was bright yellow with colorful glints of spinach and nicely filled. It was a substantial serving, and to Baked Apple’s credit, he nearly finished it all.

Neither of us was in the mood for sweets on our recent visit, which was too bad. The menu has a lot of options for those who like waffles, pancakes and French toast.

A few I considered for another visit are the Holly Berry French toast smothered in strawberries, blueberries and raspberries; the Company

The Trojans’ bread and butter under head coach John Wander has been the option offense. But in an age where passing the football is in vogue, even North gets something out of the 7-on-7 passing events.

“I’ve always believed that’s where your secondary and linebackers learn a lot, and you do have to throw the ball sometimes (in the option),” Wander said. “It’s not a lot of

In the final week of June, Wander and the Trojans were holding offseason practices but had yet to participate in any 7-on-7 events. When quarterback David Edwards returns from a trip to Europe, North will load up on the passing events later in the summer.

a more balanced offense, and so the passing events are a benefit to the Mustangs. The 7-on-7s are even more critical with two quarterbacks — juniors Jordan Skach and Jacob Baker – competing for the job as starter.

“We’ve got two kids competing at QB right now, and the sophomore coverages and varsity coverages are going to be a lot different, so they’re definitely getting a chance to see some different things,” South coach Mark Molinari said. “At the West Suburban 7-on-7 (July 11) we’ll see some defenses that we’ll probably see during the season, so that definitely helps them.”

From a player’s perspec-

tive, even the approximation of football at a 7-on-7 helps prepare for the season.

“It definitely helps with reads and getting to know your receivers and the routes and stuff like that,” Skach said.

Like North, South has most of its 7-on-7s planned for later in the summer. The Mustangs competed against Lemont in a 7-on-7 June 20, but the week after the Fourth of July will be loaded with passing events.

Even though the 7-on-7 events have no running plays, no linemen and no pass rush, they do allow teams to compete in something more than intrasquad scrimmages during summer. They also give the

coaches a better idea of what kind of talent is on the roster before preseason practices start in August.

“We’re not allowed to go 11-on-11 against another team, so 7-on-7s are really our only chance to compete against somebody else,” Molinari said.

“We put ourselves in different situations on the field and run some of our different schemes, so we see how the kids react to that. And for the offense it’s good because we get some scenarios that are game-like speed, and even though we’re not going to have any linemen in front of us, we’re going to see some different coverages.

It can be a good teaching tool.”

Follow the Burdi Nick Burdi (Downers Grove South) made a name for himself as one of the toughest pitchers to face this spring.

The Louisville sophomore helped the Cardinals compile a 51-14 record as they earned a trip to the College World Series by striking out 62 in 352/3 innings of relief work. He finished the season with a 0.76 ERA and held opponents to a .192 batting average. He yielded just 25 hits on the season, only four of which went for extra bases.

Jake Murray (Downers Grove North) was a key piece for Lewis University’s baseball team this spring. He started 50 of 51 games and was second among everyday players with a .333 batting average. He led the Flyers (33-18) in home runs (10) and runs scored (46), was second with 15 doubles and 54 hits, and was top-5 in RBIs (29).

Dan Walsh (Downers Grove South) started 54 of 56 games for the Miami University (Ohio) baseball team this spring, and was a key contributor for the Red Hawks (26-30).

The junior batted .255 and led the team with four triples, finshed second on the team with 36 RBIs, was fifth with 51 hits and was among the team leaders with 22 runs scored and seven doubles.

Tracking success Nick Kirk (Downers Grove North) certainly made an impact for Bradley University’s men’s track team this spring.

As a freshman he claimed the third-best 3,000- (8:53.27) and 5,000-meter (15:24.23) times on the squad for the outdoor season. His time in the 3,000 is already the sixth-best in school history, and he is one of just eight runners in program history to go under nine minutes in the 3,000.

Hletko’s 10 Joe Hletko (Westmont) made his senior season for North Central College’s track and field team a memorable one. Hletko posted a career-best score of 4,655 points

Game, set, match Brian Sorich (Downers Grove South) earned high marks for the men’s tennis team at Illinois Wesleyan University. The junior was named the College Conference of Illinois and Wisconsin Player of the Week for the week of April 10, was CCIW first team all-conference and was named team MVP after going 13-10 in singles play and 13-11 in doubles action.

Redbird reliever Joe Claver (Downers Grove North) appeared in seven games (one start) for Illinois State’s baseball team this spring. The redshirt sopho-

more went 2-2 and struck out six batters in 10.2 innings pitched as ISU went 39-19 this spring.

Spread it around Sophomore Megan Hansen (Westmont) was a key runner for Elmhurst College’s track and field team this spring. She was part of the 4x800-meter relay team that clocked a time of 10:33.29 and placed fifth at Rhodes Invite in late March.

Later, she ran one of the Bluejays’ tops times in the 5,000-meter run (21:21.76) during the outdoor season.

Clocking Lott Robert Lott (Downers Grove North) had a successful season for North Central College’s track team. During the indoor season, the junior was clocked at 6.66 seconds in the 55-meter dash, 7.16 in the 60 dash, 23.20 in the 200 dash, and was part of a 4x200 relay that was timed at 1:30.05. During the outdoor season, Lott was timed at 11.10 in the 100 dash and 23.69 over 200 meters.

The best of Ulrich Jeremy Ulrich (Downers Grove South) couldn’t have asked for a better freshman season for the track and field team at North Central College.

Competing in throws during the outdoor season, he had bests of 135 feet, 4 inches in the

discus, 110 feet in the hammer throw and 149-10 in the javelin.

Davis and discus Competing for the University of St. Francis track and field team, Eric Davis (Westmont) finished his junior season with the Saints’ top mark in the discus with a distance of 50.49 meters, over 165 feet.

What a catch Nick Tenerelli (Downers Grove South) played and started at catcher in 39 of 45 games for Augustana’s baseball team, and the sophomore finished the year with a .283 average, 36 hits, 26 runs scored, 15 RBIs and a .982 fielding percentage (five errors in 279 chances).

Loving Lavin As a member of Augustana’s softball team, Chelsea Lavin was one of the Vikings’ top players this spring. The sophomore was second on the team with a .391 batting average, and she also was among the team leaders with 52 hits, 24 runs scored and 22 RBIs.

Like a Fox A junior for Aurora University’s baseball team, Greg Fox appeared in six games a pitcher this spring. He made five starts and went 2-2 with a 4.00 ERA while striking out 22 in 27 innings pitched.

Winning those tournaments is a good first step as the squad builds toward competing at Cooperstown Dreams Park in summer 2014.

Brooke Andresen (Downers Grove South) made the spring a most memorable one. The Loyola University senior became the first player in Loyola softball history to earn Horizon League all-conference first-team honors in each of her four seasons as a Rambler.

Additionally, the catcher and shortstop graduated as Loyola’s career leader in hits (215), runs (116), and atbats (637), and her .338 career batting average also ranked among the top five in program history. She was named Capital One all-academic first team for District V.

LaCivita, made her name known for Loyola’s softball team. The freshman saw action in 26 contests and made 20 starts for the Ramblers this spring.

Fourth of July is not complete without apple pie

Chicken Satay Prep time: 15 minutes Refrigerate: 1 hour Cook time: 6 minutes n 2 T fish sauce n 2 T red curry paste n 2 t minced fresh lemon grass n 1 pound boneless, skinless chicken breasts, cut into 3/4inch strips n Bamboo skewers n 1/2 cup storebought peanut satay sauce Mix coconut milk, fish sauce, curry paste and lemon grass in small bowl until well blended.

Place chicken in large resealable plastic bag or glass dish. add marinade; toss to coat well.

Refrigerate 1 hour or longer for extra flavor.

Remove chicken from marinade. Discard any remaining marinade.

Soak bamboo skewers thoroughly in water for at least 30 minutes before threading with chicken. This prevents them from burning when on the grill.

Thread chicken strips onto skewers. Broil or grill over medium-high heat 3 minutes per side or until chicken is cooked through. Serve with peanut satay sauce for dipping.

All-American Apple Pie Yields 1 9-inch pie n 1 (9-inch) store-bought or homemade pie crust that includes top and bottom n 6 to 8 preferably firm and slightly tart apples, such as Granny Smith, Gravesteins or Rhode Island Greenings (about 3 pounds) n Granulated sugar (see note) n Ground cinnamon, to taste n About 3 T sifted all-purpose flour n 3 T butter, cut in small bits If crusts are homemade, keep them chilled. Preheat oven to 375 F. Peel and core the apples and slice them about 1/4-inch thick.

Puff Pastry Tarte Tatin Yields 6 to 8 servings n 1/4 pound (1 stick) unsalted butter n 1 1/2 cups sugar, divided n 10 Golden Delicious apples n 2 T lemon juice n 1 9-inch circle pre-baked puff pastry (see note) Preheat oven to 350 F. In a 9-inch ovenproof skillet, melt butter over mediumhigh heat. Stir in 1/2 cup of the sugar and cook, stirring constantly until it turns golden brown. Carefully remove from heat and set aside.

Peel, core and quarter the apples. In a nonreactive bowl, toss together the apples and lemon juice. arrange apple quarters rounded sides down in the ovenproof skillet, like a flower pattern, filling in the gaps with more apples placed curved side up. Sprinkle 1/2 cup sugar over the apples.

Cook over medium heat until the apples start to brown, about 5 minutes.

Transfer the skillet to the oven and cook until the apples are tender, 20 to 30 minutes more. Remove from the heat and let the apples cool to room temperature.

Before serving, preheat the broiler.

Return the pan to medium heat, just until the caramel softens enough for apples to loosen. Remove the pan from the heat and top the apples with the pre-baked pastry.

Invert a round heatproof serving platter over the pastry and, carefully holding the platter and skillet together, invert them; then lift off skillet to unmold the tarte tatin onto the platter. If any apples stick to the skillet or become dislodged, replace them on
