Parade thrills Geneva crowds Swedish Days sees hundreds of participants

arhodebeck@shawmedia.com GENEVA – A festive mood surrounded Geneva High School on Sunday afternoon as hundreds of participants in about a hundred entries lined up for the 64th annual Swedish Days Parade.

Strains of “God Bless America” could be heard as a band rehearsed, and a light summer breeze carried the scent of sunscreen.

Like many others seeking relief from the near 90-degree heat, members of the Geneva River Rats swim team waited for the 1 p.m. start under a tree. Head coach Joe Neukirch said this was the nonprofit’s fifth year participating in the parade.

Chris Ranallo, who will take over as head coach next year, said the parade is publicity for the team, whose members were encouraged to make signs for the event.

“It’s fun for the kids, too,” Neukirch said.

Nearby, members of the Greater Geneva Art Guild held pallets and wore paintstained clothes. One member even dressed up as Leonardo da Vinci’s famous painting, “The Mona Lisa.”

Lorraine Ochsner is president of the relatively new group – it began about a year and a half ago – and said members hoped the parade would give their organization more exposure.

The guild got about a mile’s worth of publicity as it followed the parade’s course of Anderson Boulevard, State Street and Third Street. Many spectators clustered in the shade, often on lawn chairs, slurping Big Gulps, water and other cool drinks as a digital bank sign broadcast a temperature of 89 degrees.

Favorite charity? Salvation Army Do you speak another language? A little Korean; a lot less than I used to.

Where did you learn Korean? I spent 17½ months in Korea during the war. I was in quartermaster dispatch, and we supplied food and clothing and petroleum products to all the forces on the front line in Korea. ... The 121st Evacuation Hospital was in Uijeongbu, three miles from our encampment, and that was the old M.A.S.H. unit.

What game show would you be on? “The Price is Right” Favorite local restaurant? Colonial in St. Charles What is an interesting factoid about yourself? I have met a lot of famous people, including Johnny Cash, Tom Selleck, Merle Haggard. I was putting some furniture on the Johnny Cash show, and that’s where I met Johnny Cash and his wife, June Carter, and stood and watched Merle Haggard shoot pool right next to the old theater down there.

Gas leak comes at Rogina: City administrator end of Geneva’s negotiations still ongoing Swedish Days ST. CHARLES

jbilyk@shawmedia.com ST. CHARLES – After eight years of directing operations at St. Charles City Hall, City Administrator Brian Townsend and the city’s elected officials remain in talks to determine how much more time Townsend may get in his current job.

Monday, Townsend and St. Charles Mayor Ray Rogina said the city administrator, mayor and City Council are continuing to hammer out the terms of a potential new contract for Townsend.

“We’re still negotiating, it’s as simple as that at this point,” Rogina said. “And it’s my desire to settle a contract, and my hope that it happens sooner rather than later.”

Townsend said he also

hopes to complete a deal soon.

“The mayor and I have had a number of conversations in the past 90 days,” Townsend said. “And I am looking forward to a successful resolution of all issues.”

Townsend has served as city administraBrian tor since 2005, Townsend when he was hired by former Mayor Don DeWitte. He received a new contract in 2009, and currently earns about $217,000, including salary, travel allowance and health insurance.

However, that contract expired May 6, after Rogina was elected and took office to replace DeWitte, who opted not to seek re-election.

Rogina and the City Council since have approved two 30day extensions of Townsend’s contract, allowing him to continue in his role while negotiating a new deal.

As the negotiations have continued, Rogina said rumors have spread that he may not want to retain Townsend.

But the mayor denied those assertions, saying he “absolutely” wished for Townsend to continue as city administrator.

“He does fine work,” Rogina said. “His performance is fine.”

Rogina declined to discuss either what issues remain outstanding in the negotiations or when he expects a deal to be completed.

Townsend also declined to specify which “issues” he and the mayor may need to resolve.

By BRENDA SCHORY bschory@shawmedia.com GENEVA – A ruptured gas line briefly closed James Street at 5:30 p.m. Sunday while the Swedish Days Festival was closing down, officials said.

Geneva Fire Department Deputy Chief Mark Einwich said a crew removing a tent stake hit a 1.25-inch steel service line that runs under James Street.

“When the tent company came to remove the tent stakes out of that spot, that is when they could smell the gas odor and hear the hissing from the gas line,” Einwich said. “We’re not sure how it happened, but we can speculate that when they installed the tent stake

last week at the beginning of Swedish Days, that is when the damage occurred.”

Einwich said the tent stake probably was acting as a plug, and it was not until it was removed that the gas had a route to escape.

At no time during the sixday festival was there a detectable gas odor, he said.

Nicor sent a dig crew that managed to get the service line turned off shortly after 8 p.m., he said.

“It was helpful to have a breeze dissipating the gas, and we did not have any gas pooling anywhere,” Einwich said. “And there was no cooking going on, no other hazards. The carnival was done; it shut down early because of the potential for a storm.”

Organizations provide ‘social capital’ to communities

Hoefler said he had never thought of joining Rotary as building “social capital” – not in those words exactly. But he said he could see the value in Putnam’s conclusions.

“It’s people working together,” Hoefler said. “Almost every individual in Rotary is accomplished in some way, in their field and in their experiences. When you combine goals with other people in their fields, that provides a nucleus to do good for the entire community. That is how I would view that.”

“We did an analysis, and we had a drop, we were down 20 to 30 people,” said Lynn Andrae, membership chairwoman of the North Aurora Mothers Club. “We wondered, ‘What are we not doing?’ ” As it turned out, their analysis showed moms were going to work because their husbands either had lost their jobs or had their work cut back.

But it also was that people were just overcommitting to competing interests, Andrae said.

“Moms and dads were both working ... and also doing things on the side,” Andrae said. “It was not anything we were not doing ... It’s family first and social opportunity second. They had to prioritize. ... I just don’t honestly think

people had time for community work.”

With the club’s membership back to about 60 with 10 new members, Andrae said members figured out that people will not join a club and volunteer if they can’t give it their all.

The club had to counter that idea to encourage membership, she said, such as asking members to commit to a couple of activities, not five, and still make a difference in the community.

“People come to a club for social reasons, and they want to make a difference – that’s why I came in – and we try to offer both,” Andrae said. “We offer so many social activities that integrate the whole family, not just moms.”

Among the mothers club’s events are a free community dinner in January to encourage people to meet each other, and an annual gala to raise money to distribute to the community.

The last gala raised $18,000 that was put back into the community through grants to organizations such as Hesed House and local school programs, she said.

The pasta dinner was especially successful, Andrae said, as more than 200 people came out on an icy night for spaghetti and fellowship.

“It’s a great club,” Andrae said. “You don’t have to be a mom to join, and we partner with the Lions Club of North Aurora. ... If you want to help, we can find ways for you to help.”

One of the most important aspects of a successful club in attracting members is the personal invitation – and sometimes not even to join, but to help out on a project.

The Elburn Lions Club, one of the largest clubs of its kind in the area at just shy of 200 members, attracted its incoming president, Dave Broz of Elburn, in just that way.

“How I got involved was Jeff Miller, a neighbor, asked me to help in setting up one of the fundraising events on a Saturday morning,” Broz

said. “Here I’m going down to the park setting up fencing in the rain with Jeff and Joe Kryszak. ... We got soaked to the bone, and we’re cracking jokes. It was the most fun I’ve had in the rain in a long time.”

The Elburn Lions own Lions Park and have been an active force for community service in a small town, beyond its historical mission to prevent blindness, Broz said. But its members are receptive to just about any good idea someone suggests. Broz said that openness and the high visibility for its service projects are factors Broz said contribute to the group’s success.

“We have a lot of talent and people who really care about giving back to the community,” Broz said. “The sheer number of members is not as important as who is in your club. That is our biggest strength. To a fault, everyone is there to help out. And that really never goes out of style.”

hen Dan Hoefler served on the Batavia Historic Preservation Commission, he always bought a Corvette raffle ticket from Community Development Director Jerry Swanson for the Batavia Rotary’s fundraiser.

Whenever he sold Hoefler a ticket, Swanson always invited him to a meeting. When Hoefler was getting ready to retire, he took Swanson up on his invitation, ultimately joining the club and serving as president.

“I knew the Rotary was always involved in community events,” Hoefler said. “I knew individuals who were members of the club, and I joined. It was a personal invitation and familiarity with the club.”

Kane County has many civic, social and service clubs contributing to the social capital of the region.

Despite its name, you don’t have to live in Batavia to belong to its Rotary Club. Its membership of 40 includes retired judge Dick Larson of Sugar Grove and Kane County Sheriff Pat Perez, Hoefler said.

Rotary’s historical mission is to eradicate the crippling disease polio. But locally, the Rotary raises money and donates to local causes – LivingWell Cancer Resource Center in Geneva, the Batavia Fireworks Fund, literacy efforts and the Batavia Riverwalk renovation, Hoefler said.

Yet, it serves a greater purpose than that, as part of the community’s “social capital” so named by Harvard professor of public policy Robert Putnam in his 2000 book, “Bowling Alone: The Collapse and Revival of American Community.”

The title comes from the revelation that although bowling is a popular sport, more people tend to bowl alone rather than in organized leagues.

Putnam’s research found that fewer Americans joined organizations or engaged in other social or civic activities.

Putnam’s follow-up work,

Police Cmdr. Eric Passarelli said the young male dog suffered injuries to his head and legs and cannot walk.

The dog was taken to a local vet where it is doing better, but will require more care, Passarelli said.

The dog is a boxer mixed with either a lab or a pit bull, brown with white on its underside and feet, about 1 to 2 years old and weighs 42 pounds.

Audrey June Rockwell died peacefully early in the morning Jan. 24, 2013, at Christopher House hospice in Austin, Texas.

Audrey was born June 4, 1923, in Geneva, to Roy G. Nelson and Ann Engstrom, children of western Kane County farmers and descendants of Swedes from Grimmared (Tranemo) and the Ekornavallen area of Västra Götaland, Stravalla in Halland, as well as rural Skåne.

As a child, Audrey shared a small white clapboard home on McKinley Avenue in Geneva with her parents, one brother (Barton) and two sisters (Phyllis and Priscilla).

After graduating from high school, she and her friend Margie Giffin moved to the Los Angeles suburb of Montrose where they worked in the World War II defense industry. Audrey loved the California environment and culture.

One winter day in a beachside restaurant, Audrey and Margie stumbled upon the actor John Wayne and were invited to enjoy a drink and some burgers with him and his future wife, Esperanza Baur Diaz, followed by a trip to Johnny Weissmuller’s yacht. It was in California where Audrey met her future husband, a sailor on leave named Frank Rockwell. She was impressed by his ability to walk out of a bar on his hands.

After marriage, Audrey began studying art, first in informal classes at the University of Illinois, and later taking classes at the Art Institute of Chicago. In all aspects of her life and no matter what her circumstances, Audrey expressed a strong sense of aesthetics.

After her divorce from Frank, Audrey moved with her children Brad and Sarah to Batavia, and took on a variety of jobs including secretary to a senior executive at Sears and an administrator and counselor for Community Concern for Alcoholism in Elgin. After health concerns forced her to leave the workplace, Audrey put in many hours doing volunteer work for the blind.

LaVERN A. LAPOTA Born: Nov. 15, 1917; in Chicago Died: June 23, 2013 LaVern A. LaPota, 95, passed away June 23, 2013, at the home of her daughter and son-in-law, Merilee and Dane Curtis, surrounded by her loving family.

LaVern was born Nov. 15, 1917, in Chicago, the daughter of the late George and Lea Giles. She graduated from Northwestern University in Evanston in 1938 with a degree in botany.

On Nov. 1, 1941, LaVern married the late John LaPota, and for 57 years together, they traveled the world. She was an avid golfer and played well into her late 80s.

LaVern was an amazing cook and always enjoyed hosting family gatherings and parties at her home in Wheaton. She enjoyed spending the winters in Florida with John, fishing and swimming and chatting with her Florida friends. LaVern was a gentle, graceful and classy soul who had a loving heart and was always there when you needed her.

She was preceded in death by her parents, George and Lea Giles; and her beloved husband, John.

LaVern leaves her loving legacy to be cherished by her daughter, Merilee Curtis; her son-in-law, Dane Curtis; and her granddaughter, Jennie Curtis; and many friends.

BATAVIA – Angie Sutherland, instructional technologist for Batavia School District 101, knows the importance of using technology to help students learn.

Sutherland recently was selected to be part of the next Google Teacher Academy, which will be July 24 in Chicago. Only 50 people have been selected to be part of the academy, which recognizes educators for using technology in innovative ways.

She said she was honored to be selected.

“I was not expecting to be accepted,” Sutherland said. “I know people who have been rejected multiple times.”

At the beginning of the school year, Sutherland helped implement an iPad program at Alice Gustafson Elementary School. Each fifth-grader received a third-generation iPad to use during the school day.

college, Audrey moved to the near north side of Chicago. Audrey later sought refuge in the climate of San Diego, Calif. Her last years were spent in Austin, Texas. Audrey had honesty and integrity and was a person with outspoken views on issues of justice. Increasingly with old age, she confronted bureaucracies and businesses that she believed to be exploitive. At the age of 82, she filed suit against her cellphone company. At trial, she represented herself against the company lawyer and won.

Through sheer force of will, Audrey was able to live on her own in her apartment up until a week before she died.

Audrey is survived by her sister, Priscilla Johnson of Keller, Texas; son, Brad Rockwell of Austin, Texas; daughter, Sarah Rockwell; son-in-law, Lester Joseph of Silver Spring Md.; four grandchildren, Gregg Rockwell, Lillian Rockwell, Andrew Joseph and Alex Joseph; and great-granddaughter Cheyenne Rockwell.

A memorial service will be at 11 a.m. July 5 at Oak Hill Cemetery in Geneva.

Seyller knew of DUI reporting troubles in 2009

By BRENDA SCHORY bschory@shawmedia.com ST. CHARLES TOWNSHIP – Former Kane County Circuit Clerk Deborah Seyller said she first realized there was a problem in transmitting information on DUI convictions to the secretary of state in 2009.

Seyller said former state’s attorney John Barsanti, now a judge, informed her that something was amiss.

“He said, ‘This is not on record at the secretary of state,’ ” said Seyller, referring to a drunken driving conviction. “After a few times of hearing it, I started an internal investigation. We had to look at every single one of those records to see whether or not it was on the secretary of state records … [and] from what we could see, it started in 2002” when the new Jano computer system went live.

At issue are possible DUI and other serious driving infractions that were not properly sent electronically to the Illinois secretary of state from 2002 to 2008. State officials say about a fourth of the cases did not go through, because of a computer glitch with the circuit clerk’s Jano system.

We had to look at every single one of those records to see whether or not it was on the secretary of state records … [and] from what we could see, it started in 2002.”

Deborah Seyller, former Kane County circuit clerk to go through 5,600 cases by hand in batches of 100 to see which ones had gone through and which ones had not.

Barsanti said he recalled the issue coming up a few times when a defendant’s driving abstract was not accurate – that is, the office had a defendant with a DUI conviction but no record of it in Springfield.

“I remember inquiring,” Barsanti said. “That there were kinks in the records of the criminal justice system is not all that odd. I never thought this was something that happened all the time.”

The current circuit clerk, Tom Hartwell, said the staff is still going through cases from 2003 and 2002.

The problem with DUI and other serious convictions that are not properly recorded, officials said, is that it is possible that drivers who should have licenses revoked or suspended continue driving.

Seyller said she talked to an attorney at the secretary

of state’s office in 2009 to try to make sure the old DUI cases did not result in anyone losing a license years after a conviction.

“I informed who needed to be informed at the secretary of state,” Seyller said. “I wanted to work something out ... because suspending a license so far out, people could lose their job because they lost their license and they thought everything was done and taken care of. I could not get through to them.”

Seyller maintains that her office started sending the missing cases to the secretary of state in 2010, but Terry Montalbano, licensing administrator for the secretary of state, said his office did not receive the first batch until September 2012.

“There were 167 cases in the original batch,” Montalbano said. “They came in an envelope with no explanation.”

Of those, 48 were DUI convictions from 2007 and 2008 that had not been suspended

or revoked as required, but were entered properly on Oct. 19, 2012, he said.

Montalbano said his office set up a telephone conference with Seyller and some of her deputy clerks on Oct. 31, 2012.

Another wrinkle in the situation is that the reinstatement fee for a driver’s license was $70. But in 2012, that amount was raised to $500, Montalbano said. So those who seek to reinstate their licenses after a belated revocation will have to pay the bigger fee.

Montalbano and Seyller’s recollections of the conference call also are at odds.

Montalbano said he offered to send staff from the secretary of state’s office to help Seyller go through the thousands of cases that needed to be checked.

And although Seyller complained that she had one employee on maternity leave and another out on family leave, she still declined the assistance, he said.

Seyller said she did not

recall an offer of help from Montalbano.

Montalbano said records show that Seyller contacted an attorney with the secretary of state in 2009 about the records not going through.

“But there was no indication of how many, no indication of so massive a number or what to do for people because of a lateness in reporting,” Montalbano said.

“In my opinion, that makes it worse, if in 2009 she knew there was a problem and September 2012 is when this first batch came in.”

He disputed Seyller’s version that her office had been sending them all along.

“That is absolutely not true, not true at all,” Montalbano said.

County Board members Mark Davoust, R-St. Charles, and Michael Kenyon, R-South Elgin, have called for Kane County State’s Attorney Joe McMahon to investigate the disposition of DUI cases under Seyller. McMahon said he would not comment.

The topic arose during Police Chief Jim Lamkin’s presentation to the Government Services Committee about the state’s pending concealed-carry legislation. Regulations on assault weapons that are inconsistent with the bill shall be invalid unless the regulations are enacted on, before or within 10 days after the bill’s effective date, he said.

In other words, the city’s opportunity to act in that area is gone forever 10 days after the bill becomes law, city attorney John McGuirk said.

“It’s any kind of regulations,” he said.

None of the aldermen expressed interest to draft such regulations.

“Most of the bad things don’t happen with assault rifles,” St. Charles Sportsmen’s Club member Alan Davis said. “I would suggest and support you guys not trying to impose a ban on something that’s not a problem in our community or communities around us.”

Resident John DePauw, who has a firearm owner’s identification card, urged city officials and residents to contact state legislatures to ensure the concealed carry bill is done correctly.

“Let’s get the bill passed, but let’s do it right,” he said.

Gov. Pat Quinn has until July 9 to do something with the concealed-carry legislation. If approved, it would trump the current City Code, which prohibits concealed-carry of a pistol, revolver or other firearm.

GENEVA – Geneva District 304 officials will consider all-day kindergarten for the 2014-15 school year at the earliest, but beginning with a discussion at its July 22 meeting.

Board president Mark Grosso said Monday that he would put it on that agenda to develop a preliminary action plan and see what feedback board members will get from the public.

“It’s very preliminary,” Grosso said. “We’ve had some public interest, letters to the board asking about it.

And with our common core curriculum – they don’t mandate it but they lean in that direction. It’s going to be a component of common core eventually. We just want to see what interest there is in our community.

We will probably also have a public forum.”

Bankers must be personally accountable BLOOMBERG NEWS Five years after the world’s financial system began melting down, consumers, homeowners and taxpayers remain frustrated that no banking bigwigs went to jail.

The reasons are many, including that specific misdeeds couldn’t be pinned on higher-ups and that prosecutors got cold feet after early fraud cases resulted in acquittals.

The popular desire to put those in charge behind bars is understandable and unlikely to abate, given last week’s arrest of a former Citigroup and UBS trader accused of manipulating interest-rate benchmarks. At the same time, prosecutors are required to prove willful intent, beyond a reasonable doubt, to violate specific laws. Almost

wrecking the world economy is a very bad thing. But it is not in and of itself illegal.

So, what can be done when bankers, knowing they can’t be punished for what they don’t see, purposely don blindfolds? Or when banks are caught breaking the rules but are allowed to pay large fines (which punishes shareholders, not executives) to settle civil fraud cases without admitting or denying guilt?

Those are the questions Britain’s Parliamentary Commission on Banking Standards and the Securities and Exchange Commission sought to answer last week. Their answers flow from different legal, political and cultural conventions, yet they arrive at the same correct conclusion – when banks behave badly, someone must be

held accountable.

The forensic analysis by the British commission of what ails the banking industry is a tour de force. One of the most dismal features that emerged from the evidence, the report states, was the absence of any personal responsibility for widespread failings and abuses.

Failings in banking have a disproportionate impact on the world economy. And the lack of clear lines of responsibility allows bank executives to claim the “Murder on the Orient Express” defense – everyone was party to the decision, so no one can be held to blame. This was the case in the Royal Bank of Scotland’s implosion and, in the United States, the collapse of the mortgage market.

To prevent such behavior, the commission would require

banks to assign crucial responsibilities to a specific individual, so if an enforcement action is brought against a bank, regulators would know which senior people should be held responsible.

The commission also proposes a couple of novel ideas to help regulators enforce the law. First, it would shift the burden of proof in some cases so that bankers would have to show they took positive steps to prevent wrongdoing. It also recommends a new crime of “reckless misconduct in the management of a bank.”

The legal community’s immediate response: It’ll never work. How would you prove, for instance, that a man who received a knighthood for his achievements in banking was also behaving in a criminally

reckless manner? One answer: Don’t be so quick to knight bankers who engage in dizzying expansions with huge amounts of borrowed money and minuscule amounts of capital.

There is a corollary. If a bank can settle a securities violation by paying a fine and without admitting to wrongdoing, it will commit the same violation over and over. This has been true through decades of SEC cases. Now Mary Jo White, the new chairman, is signaling that she will approve fewer of these kinds of settlements.

The changes the British commission and the SEC propose are not without controversy. But the benefits – fewer global financial crises, less severe recessions, lower unemployment – vastly outweigh the risks.

By JAY SCHWAB jschwab@shawmedia.com Matt Williams anticipated leaving his baseball mitt in Geneva when he went off to Northern Illinois University, figuring he’d focus his considerable athletic talents exclusively on football because of the demands of being a Division-I quarterback.

Turns out, the baseball bug wasn’t prepared to leave Williams be.

“It bit pretty hard,” Williams said. “That’s for sure.”

In February, the 2012 Geneva graduate had preliminary conversations with members of the NIU football and baseball coaching staffs about playing baseball in addition to football, and that is Williams’ plan as he gears up for the 2013-14 school year.

Williams acknowledged being “so nervous” about broaching the subject – attempting to play two sports in Division I is generally discouraged by coaches – but it turned out that Huskies football coach Rod Carey and his coaching staff were open-minded.

“There were all cool about it.” Williams said. “They were like ‘You want to play [baseball], go play. Football comes first, but if you’re still working out every day and doing what you need to do, more power to you.’ ” Williams is in the midst of chipping away at more than a year’s worth of baseball rust, playing in limited duty this summer for St. Charles American Legion Post 342.

Because of legion rules regarding college players that did not play for the team last season, Williams is not eligible to play in league games or in the postseason state tournament, but he is participating in some weekend events.

Longtime Post 342 coach Dale Wilderspin raved about Williams’ play, and compared him athletically to former St. Charles East star Adam Milauskas, who went on to play professionally in the Pittsburgh Pirates’ organization in the early 2000s.

There are still some things he can correct and he knows that, but overall he’s a great athlete.”

Williams was a decorated baseball and football standout at Geneva, making a substan-

tial varsity impact as an underclassman in both sports.

He was the Chronicle’s Baseball Player of the Year after a senior season in which he batted .392, drove in 49 runs and had six saves with a 0.68 ERA as the Vikings’ closer when he wasn’t playing a sparkling center field.

It’s premature to know what his role will be with the Huskies’ baseball team, but at least there is precedent for the baseball-football double-dip on NIU’s campus. Recent NIU graduate Jamison Wells also played both sports for the Huskies.

Williams isn’t sweating the effect playing two sports collegiately could have on him academically.

“In high school, I always did worse [academically] when I wasn’t playing a sport in the winter,” Williams said.

“Baseball and football keep me on track with where I need to be with school, so I think that will help me a lot.”

In college baseball, teams play a lighter fall schedule to prepare for their main season in the spring. Williams expects to have extremely limited time to devote to baseball in the fall since the Huskies’ football team will be in-season.

This fall, Williams again projects to be stuck behind standout Huskies quarterback Jordan Lynch, for whom the university launched an “official” Heisman Trophy publicity campaign on Monday. Williams signaled in the plays to Lynch as a redshirt during last season’s Orange Bowl season for the Huskies.

Williams said he remains confident in his football future.

“It’s all about getting the opportunity,” Williams said.

“Once you get the opportunity, you have to take it for all it’s worth.”

By KEVIN DRULEY kdruley@shawmedia.com GENEVA – Ask Kaneland coach Brian Johnson what he’s learned about his boys basketball team during summer vacation and he begins with a qualifier.

“It’s kind of a go from league game to league game kind of thing,” Johnson said. “We don’t always have our full team, so it’s a lot of looking at individuals and who works well and seeing what kind of Xs and Os can carry over into the regular season.”

Seniors Ty Carlson, Drew David and John Pruett have figured prominently into each of those combinations, even as they, like many teammates, balance a loaded summer schedule of AAU basketball and other Kaneland summer sports.

While David, the Knights’ point guard, returns as a seasoned starter, he has improved the consistency of his shot while limiting turnovers during Geneva summer league games, which continued Monday.

“I think he’s been that leader the last couple years, but it’s a different situation when you’re a senior and now it’s your last go at it,” Johnson said.

Carlson, another guard, earns praise for hustle and hard work, while Johnson finds Pruett, a 6-foot-2 forward, has “moved his game up another level.”

That leap stalled slightly when Pruett sprained an ankle during a league game against Burlington Central last week. Contesting a shot on the arc, he landed awkwardly.

Johnson said Pruett would be fine, and the injury just needed time. It’s coming soon: The team’s summer schedule will end Thursday with the conclusion of the Morris Shootout.

Winding down: St. Francis scheduled summer games into early July in past years,

but is shutting down its summer program this week, as well.

“We’re gone every weekend with a shootout and we’ve had a couple shootouts during the week, little minishootouts,” said Spartans coach Bob Ward, whose team played at Plainfield East over the weekend. “At the end of the summer, we kind of try to re-evaluate each year. Just kind of, ‘Hey, what did you think about last year?’ I just thought that ending it this week would be what was best for us. And I really think that we’ve had a pretty good summer.”

The Spartans graduated the core of their 3A supersectional qualifier and will rely on starting minutes from 2012-13 reserves, namely sturdy senior forward Kilian Brown of Geneva.

Let’s get together: Johnson has organized an as-yetunnamed, six-team shootout for Feb. 15 at Kaneland.

Matchups will feature Kaneland against Hillcrest, North Chicago against Larkin and St. Charles North against an opponent to be determined.

“I’m hoping that it’s a program that people don’t necessarily get a chance to see,” Johnson said.

That was the main allure of bringing in Hillcrest and North Chicago, and partly the influence of longtime former Batavia coach Jim Roberts, the brainchild of Batavia’s “Night of Hoops” and an eager Johnson consultant for this event.

Roberts passed along contact information for Hillcrest coach Don Houston, and the networking took over from there.

“It’s more for our kids and our community,” Johnson said. “Just continuing to build our program up and give kids great experience.

Trying to get a regional atmosphere in our gym, I think, is really important.”

From what she can gather about her new employer down Edgelawn Drive, that turnout is much lower at Aurora Central Catholic.

As she transitions from guiding the top team in the Suburban Christian Conference to one of the league’s struggling sides, Kane aspires to boost the offseason commitment level, for a start.

“Their numbers are growing as a school at ACC, so I’m hoping through that we can help grow the program, have that consistency and have girls returning year after year for four years,” Kane said.

While Kane calls coaching soccer “an added benefit” of working in her priority field of education, ACC athletic director Sean Bieterman goes several strides further.

“You’re getting someone with very good academic credentials, and obviously her background in soccer in this area is tremendous,” Bieterman said. “This gives us the ability to start building something special and have some stability there for the long period of time.”

Kane was in position to become ACC’s fourth coach in as many seasons when Rosary did not ask her to return as an English teacher

after the 2012-13 school year.

She won regional titles in both of her seasons with the Royals and an SCC crown this past spring, compiling a 33-10-3 record in the two years.

A former player at Benet, Kane commutes from Chicago but occasionally shortens her drive when she stays with her parents in Naperville. She said she is considering moving closer to Aurora.

With conference realignment in the cards – ACC last month was among a group of seven SCC members that announced plans to join the Metro Suburban Conference in 2014-15 – Kane might only find herself facing her former employer once.

“People kind of laugh a little that [her new job is] at ACC, but I think they’re happy that I have a position educating students, which is what I want to do,” Kane said.

GENEVA – A.J. Friedman charted 1- and 2-point baskets instead of hoisting them at Saturday’s Swedish Days 3-on-3 basketball tournament.

The Marmion alumnus from Geneva was unable to wrangle a team in time, but his summer involvement with the Geneva Park District produced a courtside view just the same.

“When you know you could be out there playing with them, when you’re watching, you itch to play,” Friedman said. “But it’s still fun in watching them play. There’s a lot of really intense games.”

Nineteen teams over three age divisions – 10 to 11, 12 to 13 and 18-plus – kept their bodies in motion and festivalgoers entertained from the time the youth games began about 9 a.m.

The turnout was down slightly from past years. Park district facilities manager David Shindley cited a youth baseball tournament in the region that might have diverted would-be participants.

Those thirsting for hoops in what is arguably the Tri-Cities’ summer hotbed for the sport – Geneva High School hosts a boys league on Mondays and Wednesdays throughout June – didn’t seem to notice.

“It’s just kind of synonymous with Saturday morning,” Shindley said. “Because when we start, we’re kind of the only ones out here. None of the shops and booths are open yet. People

While the tournament isn’t quite as seasoned as the 64-year old festival it’s part of, the event

still has a strong following.

“Especially with the adults, it brings a lot of people to Third Street,” Shindley said. “People stop. See what’s going on. We get some pretty good crowds along the sidelines, even people that have nothing to really do with the tournament.”

Toews bounces back from injury

Jonathan Toews was determined to be on the ice, and he scored a goal in the Hawks’ 3-2 win over the Bruins to win the Stanley Cup, 4 games to 2.

Two days after suffering an upper-body injury that caused him to miss the third period of Game 5 against the Boston Bruins, the Blackhawks captain rejoined the top line alongside Patrick Kane and Bryan Bickell. Toews said he was fully healthy but declined to discuss specifics about his injury.

“It was a couple hits that I took that I guess the coaches thought I wasn’t ready to play in the third period,” Toews said after participating with his teammates in Monday’s morning skate at TD Garden. “Obviously, you always want to bounce back.

“It is a physical game. There are no worries there. The coaches were confident we could win the game while making sure I wasn’t risking anything. I feel 100 percent, and the coaches are aware of that.”

Toews, who has a history of concussions, left Game 5 shortly after he was leveled on a high, hard hit by Bruins forward Johnny Boychuk near the net.

Toews played several shifts after the hit by Boychuk, who was not penalized on the play and avoided a fine or suspension from the league.

Teammates said they never doubted that Toews would play in Game 6.

“Deep down, I knew he’d play,” Hawks forward Andrew Shaw said before the game.

“He’s a great player. He’s a great competitor. He’s a huge leader.”

Shaw said plenty of Hawks players battled through injuries as they approached their ultimate goal. Hours later, Shaw took a puck off of the face and stayed down on the ice, where he left a pool of blood as he got to his feet and slowly skated to the bench.

“I think anyone would [do] the same – a chance to win the Cup,” Shaw said. “Obviously, there’s got to be a lot of things wrong with you if you don’t

Deep breath: Hawks rookie Brandon Saad tried to harness his nervous energy Monday morning while he considered the fact that the Stanley Cup would be in TD Garden for Game 6.

“It’s exciting,” said Saad, who will not turn 21 years old until October. “A little bit nerve wracking. But talking to some of the guys helped calm me, and we’re all looking forward to getting it going.”

Saad is not alone. Even some

of the oldest Hawks players battle jitters.

Thirty-six-year-old center Michal Handzus said nerves were normal at this time of year.

“You always get nervous a little bit,” said Handzus, a veteran of 950 career NHL games.

“It’s nature. Anybody who doesn’t, I don’t know how they can do it.

“But it’s still the game. You always go back to when you started playing when you were young. Just have fun. Enjoy being with your teammates. Enjoy

the moment.”

Although the message was simple – stay focused, be confident – it helped some of the players who were not a part of the Hawks’ championship run in 2010.

“Those guys said just play the game,” Frolik said. “Do the same thing like you did before. Play with confidence, and don’t be scared. Just play the game.”

More Central shakeup: In other ACC coaching news, Geneva resident Jim Hallahan’s contract as softball coach was not renewed.

Bieterman reached Hallahan on the matter June 17, telling him the athletic department decided to go in a different direction.

Hallahan, who guided the Chargers to a surprise berth in a 2A supersectional this spring after a sub.500 regular season, said he was told the school preferred to hire ACC faculty or staff for the position.

Hallahan owns his own construction company.

He spent the past three seasons as Chargers coach, and his resume includes a two-season stint as St. Charles North freshman coach.

“I jokingly tell everybody that if I could make $60,000 a year coaching softball, I’d stop working my body to death,” Hallahan said, “but I”m always $55,000 a year short.”

Hallahan recently applied for varsity openings at Elgin, Lake Park, Naperville North and Waubonsie Valley. He hopes any potential new AD would be able to work with his situation.

“It’s tough not being in the building, and I often wonder how much that weighs into an athletic director’s selection process, trying to have someone in the building,” Hallahan said.

The “Jordan Lynch for 6” moniker relates to Lynch’s jersey number and most importantly, to his habit of getting the Huskies into the end zone. As a junior, he was responsible for 44 touchdowns with 25 passing and 19 rushing scores. That total was more than the number scored by 50 FBS teams in 2012. With an average of 353.8 yards of total offense per game last season, Lynch accounted for 75.3 percent of NIU’s offensive yards.

Lynch earned second team All-America honors from The Associated Press and Phil Steele’s Magazine a year ago, won the Vern Smith Leadership Award as MAC MVP and was a finalist for the Manning Quar-

terback Award. He finished seventh in voting for the Heisman Trophy.

“I think a Heisman campaign isn’t off of what he could do or will do, but what he’s done,” said NIU coach Rod Carey. “What he’s already accomplished in one year as a starter is more than what some people do in a career. I know that every coach in America would sure love to have a leader like Jordan on their team.

“When you have a leader like him, he will always defer to the team and know that he can’t be there without his team. The attention to the team and to the program is well-deserved based on what’s been going on here not just last year but over the last 10 years.”

“At a certain point, any Heisman campaign is about Jordan and what he and NIU accomplish on the field,” said NIU Associate Athletic Director Donna Turner. “Our goal at this time is to make sure people realize what Jordan did last year, and that one of the most dynamic and multi-talented players in college football is back. This is phase one, and we’re excited to get it started.”

Lynch and the Huskies open the 2013 season at Iowa on August 31 and play their first home game Sept. 21 against Eastern Illinois at Huskie Stadium. Northern Illinois has a 21-game home winning streak at Huskie Stadium dating back to 2009.

The teenage boy climbed from the car and stood near the sidewalk, waving goodbye as his mother and grandfather drove away in tears. He was 13 years old when he began living alone in the big city, six hours from home. But he told himself that, someday soon, he’d move back home.

“I didn’t know I was never going back,” Alex Len says today.

Before Len came to America on a student visa, before he first suited up for Maryland and long before he transformed himself into a sure-fire NBA lottery pick, a lanky kid from a Ukranian coal-mining town took a chance on the future. So he ventured to a new city – Dnipropetrovsk, 220 miles west of his home town of Antratsit – on his own with a new cellphone in his pocket, so he could call home on the bus ride to school each morning.

Len didn’t cry that day.

Already tall for his age, he was excited to develop in one

of Ukraine’s best high school basketball programs, smiling as the family car disappeared down the block.

In the passenger’s seat, Juliya Len was trembling, terrified she’d released her son into the cold, mean world. She considers herself a hopeless romantic, fervently wishing to make her son’s dream come true, and yet she wondered whether she made the wrong choice. “Like being torn apart into two pieces from one whole,” she says today in Russian.

It’s a risk the family took seven years ago, one that will finally pay off with worldwide fame and garish paychecks come Thursday’s NBA draft, bringing closure to a journey that commenced on that sidewalk. Back home, Len and his mother often curled up on the couch together and watched New York Knicks games on the Internet. Just before tip-off, the cameras would zoom in on individual players, their faces illuminated by the bright lights of Madison Square Garden. “What I would give, just one time, to

have that feeling,” Alex would say.

“You will,” his mother replied. “You’ll make it. You know you will. Dreams can come true.”

The white sheet of graph paper was ripped from its notebook and taped to his closet’s back wall, hidden behind the sweatshirts and dress pants. It’s mostly Russian, written in pen. Three items at the top. A list. Len translates. “Мои цели,” the heading reads.

My goals.

These are broad, intangible aims: Toughen myself, morally and physically. Practice every day like it’s my last. Give everything I have completely in each game.

At the bottom is one more goal, written in capital letters with larger font, surrounded by sharp lines for emphasis. “Попасть ь NBA.” Get to the NBA. Yet children in Antratsit aren’t supposed to harbor such dreams. It’s a coal-mining town, where more than half of adult males – Len’s grandfather, among them – descend into the earth every

morning and children run around with elbows and knees stained black from the ambient soot. You take a 9-to-5 job, take breaks when you’re told and earn money to support your family, aspiring simply to do what those before you did. Only five men born in Ukraine have ever reached the NBA, because who fools around with games when you could be learning old-fashioned, get-your-hands-dirty, honest-to-goodness work?

As a teenage girl, Juliya Len used to race in one- and two-kilometer events. Another Soviet Union territory offered her a scholarship to attend school and compete there, but her mother refused.

To this day, Juliya remembers that feeling of denied dreams and swore to support her son whenever possible, customs be damned. When Alex said he wanted to play in America, she ignored the naysayers – Alex’s grandparents among them – and told them that, even if there’s a one-in-a-million chance, her son was going to be that one in a million.

The initial launch features the JordanLynchfor6. com website with video highlights and features, biographical information, statistics, records and more. Along with the website, Northern Illinois has created a Twitter page @Lynchfor6 which will tweet links to stories on Lynch and the Huskies, interesting facts about Lynch on and off the field, including

the “Lynch Fact of the Day.” NIU has also re-launched the Jordan Lynch for 6 Facebook page with a new look that will engage fans in different ways.

In his first season as Jordan Lynch NIU’s start ing quarterback a year ago, Lynch became the first player in NCAA Football Bowl Subdivision history to pass for more than 3,000 yards and run for more than 1,500. A Windsor chair from the 18th century might be made with an added piece at the end of the arm because it is a “writing arm” Windsor. There can be a drawer beneath the seat of a Shaker sewing chair. Many types of chairs were made into rocking chairs with the addition of pieces of curved wood or a bouncy platform with springs. A chair with paddlelike arms and a rectangular wooden piece attached to the back at an angle is known as a “cockfighting chair.”

It was thought the user sat facing the back of the chair to see the fight, but now it is believed that the wooden piece was meant to hold a book and that the chair is a “reading chair” once used in libraries. A similar chair was made by the Roycroft Colony in East Aurora, N.Y., in about 1905. It had a narrow ledge at the top of the chair back. The user sat facing the back and straddling the chair, with arms leaning on the leather-covered wooden ledge. It is a meditation chair. There is a modern group at the Roycroft Colony today that is interested in art and meditation. *** Q: My 1910 telephone is in excellent shape. A label on it reads, “Property of the American Bell Telephone Co.” What is the phone worth?

by American Telephone & Telegraph Co., which had been an American Bell subsidiary. Telephones the age of yours sell for about $100 to $200, depending on style and condition. *** Q: I have some Olin Russum Pottery and would like to know something about it. Is it collectible?

A: Olin Lansing Russum Jr. (19181998), known as “Russ,” was a potter and sculptor who lived and worked in Maryland. In 1951 he and his wife, Jean, built a studio in a converted barn near Gunpowder Falls. Russ made dishes, sculptures and watercolors, but is best known for his tile and bas-relief murals.

His murals are in several buildings in the Baltimore area, and some of his work is in museum collections. He also taught a ceramics workshop at the Baltimore Museum of Art. Jean was a woodworker who made sculptures and furniture. They worked together on some projects until her death in 1986. Their work has been sold in several recent auctions and can be found in shops.

*** *** Q: I still have the portable Brother typewriter my father bought for me 40 years ago. I have kept it stored in its original carrying case and it still works. I wonder what it’s worth.

The strange back on this Roycroft chair can be explained by its name, “meditation chair.” It sold for $1,300 at a Rago Auction in Vineland, N.J., in March 2013. A similar chair sold for $3,000 a few years ago.

He’s holding a couple of radishes or turnips in his left hand and what appears to be a book in his right. His head, the stein’s lid, has a pewter rim. Brother Industries, a Japanese corporation that dates back to 1908, still is in business today manufacturing printers, fax machines and other office and industrial equipment. Portable electric typewriters like yours don’t excite collectors, but you might be able to sell it online for up to $20. *** Q: I found a funny pair of pins that look old. Each metal pin is in the shape of a man thumbing his nose at the other. One is wearing a hat with the word “Hancock,” and the other, a bearded man, has a hat that reads “Garfield.” Can you explain what is going on?

The zombies in “World War Z” are not your grandfather’s zombies. These are zombies on steroids. They don’t plod, they dash. They don’t chew. They chomp.

And the transformation of the infected from human beings into flesh-munching maniacs is fast and grisly. At least the zombies are still butt-ugly.

Much has been written about this movie’s problems, complete with reshoots, rewrites and reschedules. That usually signals a disaster. That isn’t the case here. While no masterpiece, “Z” scores with a heavy dose of harrowing experiences.

The aforementioned problems stem from the source material. The filmmakers faced the daunting task of turning a multifaceted book by Max Brooks – son of Mel – into a comprehensible movie.

Rather than deal with all the issues and circumstances raised in the book, the movie simply eliminates nearly all of them. So, fans of the book, beware. They should know, however, that one of my colleagues who had read the book still enjoyed the film.

“World War Z” opens with former United Nations investigator Gerry Lane (Brad Pitt) spending quality time with his family, wife Karin (Mireille Enos), and their young daughters Constance (Sterling Jerins) and Rachel (Abigail Hargrove). In the background, the television tells of some bad behavior going on in the world, behavior that goes unheeded by most countries until it is too late.

It turns out that a swift-moving virus is turning people into rabid telemarketers.

No, they’re becoming zombies.

Gerry and his family get a meet-andgreet with the ghouls on a car ride in Philadelphia. Let the nail-biting set pieces begin as the Lanes barely get out alive.

The movie plays out more like a travelogue of terror than a cohesive narrative, but if you’re into visceral ventures you’ll go along for the thrill ride.

Next stop is Newark, where the Lanes find refuge in an apartment building with a Latino family before being rescued on the building’s roof by a helicopter with the zombies in pursuit.

The zombies do a lot of pursuing in this movie.

The Lanes end up on a Navy ship in the Atlantic where Gerry is told to find the source of the virus so a cure can be

Gerry at first resists – who wouldn’t? – but when he’s told his family leaves the protection of the ship if he declines, he wisely changes his mind. Nothing like a reluctant warrior. As to why a former U.N. investigator is the man for this job, well, how many former U.N. investigators look like Brad Pitt? He’s also one of the film’s producers.

Gerry, a disease expert and a group of Navy SEALs head to South Korea and things don’t go well. Gerry meets a traitorous CIA agent (David Morse), who explains that the North Koreans dealt with the plague by extracting everyone’s teeth. No teeth, no biting, no infection, and, more importantly, no more dentists’ bills. Then it’s time for another narrow escape.

Gerry and company fly off next to Israel, where authorities have kept the zombies at bay by building walls. The country is no stranger to walls. Then things don’t go well again. Cue more munching, killing and another narrow escape with Gerry now accompanied by Segen (Daniella Kertesz), an Israeli soldier with a nasty wound. They end up on an airplane, but you’ll never guess who’s aboard. This set piece may be the film’s most nerve-racking.

Eventually, Gerry and Segen arrive at a World Health Organization lab in Wales where they work with scientists to find a cure. Making this job a tad tricky is that some of lab’s inhabitants aren’t interested in research anymore.

They wander around the halls, moaning and groaning and chattering their teeth awaiting their next unhappy meal.

Director Marc Forster (“Monster’s Ball”) takes the bouillabaisse approach to filmmaking here, mixing in one part “Contagion” and one part “28 Days Later” along with parts from other zombie movies. It tries to be smart and gross.

Too bad he didn’t add a part of “Shaun of the Dead” as the film could have used some humor to offer some relief from all the tension.

That the cast fares so well is a tribute to their skills, especially Pitt and Enos, who provide a sense of humanity in an inhumane world.

Zombie aficionados might take issue with the film’s PG-13 rating as that limits the amount of blood spurting and intestine ingesting they crave. Don’t worry, “Z” pushes the boundaries of that rating with zombies being manhandled in all manner of unpleasant ways. The 3-D effects are hit and miss.

What’s most annoying about “World War Z,” however, is its lack of conclusion. It’s almost as if the filmmakers said, “That’s enough carnage for today.

We can do more in a sequel. Or two. Or three.” Considering how many scenes from the book were left out of the movie, there’s plenty of material from which to work.

Is this something I should report to my managers? No cure exists for Parkinson’s, but treatment is possible Dear Doctor K: My husband was just diagnosed with Parkinson’s disease. Can you discuss it in your column? I don’t know anything about it.

Dear Reader: Parkinson’s disease (PD) is a disease of the central nervous system. It causes problems with body motions and movement. PD worsens over time.

Brain cells “talk” to each other by making and releasing chemicals called neurotransmitters. When one cell releases a neurotransmitter, another picks up the signal. One type of neurotransmitter is dopamine.

Dopamine is made in an area deep in the brain called the basal ganglia. That is also where movements are coordinated. The dopamine made by cells in the basal ganglia is necessary for the basal ganglia to function properly.

PD develops when dopamine-producing nerve cells (neurons) in the brain die and not enough dopamine is produced.

This affects movement. (I’ve put an illustration of this process on my website, AskDoctorK.com.)

PD usually begins as a slight tremor or stiffness that is most obvious at rest. When the hands of a PD sufferer are resting in his lap, they may tremble. But when he reaches for a cup of coffee,

As the illness worsens, tremors become more widespread. PD also causes rigidity and a slowing of body movements. A person’s face slowly becomes expressionless.

Initiating a movement, like sitting up from a chair, may take many seconds to start. A person walks slowly, with short, quick steps.

If your husband’s PD gets much worse, he will likely have difficulty walking and performing daily activities such as dressing or using utensils. But in some people PD progresses very slowly.

There is no cure for PD, but symptoms can be treated with medications. Medication may not be necessary at first. Treatment usually begins when symptoms interfere with work or home life, or when it becomes difficult to walk or maintain balance.

Medications used to treat PD either boost levels of dopamine in the brain or mimic the effects of dopamine. The most commonly used medication is levodopa. It is usually prescribed in combination with another drug called

carbidopa. Other medications can also be used, either alone or in combination with levodopa.

Nearly all patients improve after they start taking levodopa.

But long-term use often causes side effects and complications.

Depression is fairly common in people with PD. Antidepressant medications can help. Regular exercise and a balanced diet also may help to improve a patient’s sense of well-being and body control. The type of exercise called tai chi has been shown to help.

Surgery is considered only when medications are no longer effective. Surgical options include deep brain stimulation in which electrical stimulation is delivered to targeted areas of the brain to control symptoms. Another option involves destroying precisely targeted areas of the brain that are responsible for the most troubling symptoms.

We can do a great deal more to help people with PD today than when I was in medical school. Based on the progress of research, I expect more effective treatments in the future.

My parents refuse to allow me to date until I turn 16. School is out for the summer, so that means I won’t turn 16 until it’s time to return to school in the fall.

I won’t be able to date all summer. All my close girlfriends, and I mean all (100 percent), are dating.

This means I will have a very lonely summer vacation. I’m a good student, and I’ve never, ever been in trouble at school, at home or in the community.

I think the “no date until the 16th birthday” rule is stupid. My parents must think that I will go to bed the night before my birthday and wake up morphed into a wise, mature teenager. Teens who are mature young adults, who maintain good school grades, who are model citizens and who are a few weeks shy of their 16th birthday should be given permission to start dating.

Dr. Wallace: I don’t smoke tobacco cigarettes, but I have smoked dried corn silk. The silk on corn is dried in the sun and then rolled in cigarette paper. It takes about a week for the corn silk to be ready for smoking. I’ve only smoked a couple of

Is there any danger in smoking corn silk? My parents are from Japan, and they are not thrilled about giving me money to spend any way I choose. I do my chores faithfully, so the allowance will have nothing to do with my chores.

Dear Sheila: Yes, I believe teens should receive a weekly allowance. It’s been proven in studies that teens who receive an allowance do much better in money matters when they become independent adults.

If your parents can afford it, $10 a week should be enough to cover your “necessities.”

At the bridge table, declarer, after observing the dummy, collects facts – winners and losers – and reflects by combining them. Then he tries to find the best line of play without experimentation.

In today’s deal, how should South play in six no-trump after West leads the club jack?

As soon as North opened the bidding, South knew it was either a six or seven deal. But he started quietly with a two-diamond response. However, when North raised diamonds, South launched Blackwood to learn that the diamond king was missing.

South can afford one diamond loser, not two. If the suit is splitting 2-1, there are no problems. So declarer should assume a 3-0 break.

If South first cashes his ace, he loses two tricks when West discards. Similarly, if declarer starts by calling for dummy’s queen, he fails when East has the void. The guaranteed line is to take the first trick on the board and play the diamond three. If East pitches, South wins with his ace and leads back toward dummy’s queen.

But when East plays the two, declarer covers with his four!

Here, that wins the trick and the contract is safe. But if West takes the trick, the suit must be 2-1.
