Rain doesn’t stop Batavia Green Walk

By JONATHAN BILYK jbilyk@shawmedia.com BATAVIA – Carolyn Burnham and others tasked with organizing downtown Batavia’s early summer festival, the Batavia Green Walk, knew the risks presented anytime anyone throws a party outside.

“It’s always hard with any outdoor event, because of the weather,” said Burnham, who serves on the Green Walk’s organizing committee. “But this event is all about showing people the opportunities they have to enjoy the outdoors.

“So it was important that this be outside, even if it does rain.”

And Saturday morning, rain fell throughout the morning, putting a damper on the sixth annual Batavia Green Walk.

Staged for the last five years, the Green Walk is intended to offer Batavia residents and visitors alike an opportunity to learn more about the surrounding environment, and the variety of local products, services and activities to help promote a more “green” lifestyle.

Burnham noted that this year, the event more than doubled its number of vendors and exhibitors, enlisting about 70 for the 2013 festival.

The various exhibitors were arrayed along the Riverwalk near the Peg Bond Center, Batavia City Hall and the River Street pedestrian bridge.

“So it was important that this be outside, even if it does rain.”

They offered an array of products and services, including products to make a home more energy efficient, locally grown and organic food options, and information on local “green” recreational options.

Visitors also could rent kayaks or paddle boats to take out onto the water of the adjacent lagoon.

Organizers had expected larger crowds at the event, as well, as they opted to stage the Green Walk on a Saturday for the first time in the event’s history. Previously, the Green

Walk had been staged on a Friday.

The Saturday scheduling allowed the Green Walk to be held jointly with Batavia’s downtown Farmer’s Market on River Street, just across the pedestrian bridge.

They also added food concessions and “mini-lectures” presented on various topics, including Fox River water quality; conscious shopping and cooking; birds in the Fox River; and home energy efficiency, among others.

Morning rains, however, appeared to keep many people away, organizers said.

Joi Cuartero, executive director of Batavia MainStreet, which helped to sponsor and plan the event, estimated that by mid-afternoon, several hundred people had visited the festival.

As sunshine broke through the clouds, she believed about 1,000 would come by the time it

wrapped up.

She also noted that the rain did not keep everyone away, as the event had been visited by “a number of people with umbrellas” in the morning.

Lenny and Kelly Peterson, of St. Charles, said they were drawn to the event by the farmer’s market, which offered them the chance to meet a farmer from whom they were buying produce through a community supported agriculture arrangement.

“I usually work on Saturdays, so this is kind of a unique chance for me to come down here with my family and check this out,” Lenny said. “It seems like a pretty neat event.

“Despite the rain.”

Annual festival brings Swedish fun to Geneva

bschory@shawmedia.com GENEVA – The 64th Annual Swedish Days Festival kicks off today, and more than 250,000 people are expected to descend on Geneva for the six days of food, carnival, events, activities, sales, crafts and music.

The event officially opens at 10 a.m. today, and it will offer Creation Station at James and Third streets on the north side of the old Courthouse, with Hansel and Gretel performed by The Puppet Palace, exhibitions at the Geneva History Center, 113 S. Third St., Geneva, and Concerts on the Lawn beginning at 1 p.m. and an ice cream eating contest from 6 to 7 p.m. on the Central Stage.

The event is sponsored by the Geneva Chamber of Commerce with support by Cadence Health and the city of Geneva.

“We had so much new last year. We took what we did last year that was successful and added it this year,” chamber spokeswoman Laura Rush said. “We’ve brought back the zip line and Geneva’s Got Talent and expanded Sweden Väst – which means Sweden West. We’ve taken that and made it bigger and better.

Sweden Väst will be from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. Saturday and 10 a.m. and 3 p.m. Sunday in a big tent on North Fourth Street between State and Hamilton streets, Geneva. It features Swedish food, games, music and art, Rush said.

“Every hour for both days, we have some sort of entertainment going on, far more than we had last year,” Rush said. “Everybody who did it last year is coming back. We had other people who heard about it, and they emailed us.

‘Heard you have this event want to be part of it; what do we need to do.’ We’ll have Swedish artists, food, singers, dancers and a maypole is going to be raised about 11:30 a.m. Saturday.”

The maypole was designed by the event’s sponsor, Ingrid Rowlett of I.B. Quality Cabinets, Rush said.

all decorated in green and wrapped with wiring so kids can put flowers and ribbons on it,” Rush said. “We’ll have the Swedish American Children’s Choir who will teach children the traditional maypole dance.”

The Swedish food includes meatballs, potatoes sausage, lingonberry sundaes, coffee, cardamom coffee cake and lemonade or blueberry slushies, Rush said.

The Swedish Chef from the Muppets and Pipi Longstocking will be at Sweden Väst. The chef will be played

a Geneva High School student, and the Astrid Lindgren character will be played by a Geneva graduate.

“It will be a kind of Swedish immersion explosion,” Rush said.

Also returning is Geneva’s Got Talent semifinals at 6:30 p.m. Wednesday on the main stage, featuring 20 performers. The 10 finalists chosen then will perform at 6:30 p.m.

on semifinalists on Facebook from 10 a.m. Tuesday to 10 a.m. Friday.

Food booths, featuring local charities and nonprofit agencies, will return. Rush said for many, it’s one of the biggest fundraisers of the year. So when people buy a roasted turkey leg from the Knights of Columbus or Hawaiian Shaved Ice from Hearts of Hope or Lemon Shake-Ups from Homes for Endangered and Lost Pets, they are supporting local causes, she said.

Returning events include the carnival every day, Kids’ Parade at noon Friday, the Friends of the Geneva Library used book sale from 5 to 9 p.m. starting Thursday, 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. Friday and 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. Saturday, Twi-

light Golf from 9 p.m. Friday to midnight Saturday at Stone Creek Mini-Golf in Wheeler park, using glow-inthe-dark golf balls as well as nightly concerts on the main stage.

The 43rd Annual Granquist Music Competition will be from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. Saturday at Geneva High School, 416 McKinley Ave., Geneva.

The All-American Soap Box Derby races will be from 9 a.m. to 1:30 p.m. Saturday, at Second Street between Campbell and Fulton streets, and the Swedish Days Parade starts at 1 p.m. Sunday, on Anderson Boulevard and Center Street, Geneva.

In years past, estimates of how many people attended would be about 240,000. But in recent years, Rush said she thinks 250,000 or more would be a more accurate estimate.

“I based it [the increased estimate] on how long it takes me to walk from one end to the other,” Rush said. “For people experiencing Geneva for the first time, there are a lot of different reasons for being here. Swedish Days is 64 years old. We’ve been keeping something going for 64 years – that’s pretty darn good.”

The St. Charles City Council on Monday unanimously approved Absolute Construction and Roofing to install an asphalt shingle roof at McIlvaine’s property, 605 Prairie St., St. Charles.

At $27,300, the St. Charles company had the lowest of three proposals, said Bob Vann, the city’s building and code enforcement division manager.

Samples were to be given to McIlvaine today so he could select his color, Vann said, adding work should begin within a week. Weather permitting, he said, the project should be finished in five to seven working days.

The city is completing this and other projects at the direction of the Kane County Cir-

cuit Court, which last month found 605 Prairie St. in violation of the St. Charles City Code.

Vann said the city also was involved with underground electrical work and an exterior stair and deck system.

McIlvaine is to work on other items, such as windows and doors, Vann said.

In other news, Mayor Ray Rogina led a swearing-in ceremony for Todd Bancroft, who was selected to fill in the term of the vacant 3rd Ward seat left

by Rogina when he became

mayor.

Joined by his wife and sons at the podium, Bancroft said it is an honor to serve the town he loves.

Also Monday, Joe Schelstreet was sworn in as St. Charles fire chief to whistles and applause from the standing-room-only crowd, which included members of the fire department and former fire Chief Patrick Mullen.

“I extend my very sincere thanks and gratitude and appreciate your attendance here tonight,” Schelstreet said, list-

ing the chiefs who came before him. “I am the sixth person with the privilege to be named fire chief.”

In a memo to Rogina, City Administrator Brian Townsend explained his reasons for recommending Schelstreet for the position.

“This decision was made after careful consideration of many factors, including the qualifications and responsibilities of the position and his performance as acting chief for the past six months,” Townsend wrote.

Geneva depends on part-time, full-time firefighters

North Aurora agrees to laundromat expansion

North Aurora village trustees Monday approved a special use permit allowing Marberry Cleaners, 220 John St., to expand. The Marberry family, which has owned the property since the 1970s, wants to build a 10,500-square-foot addition to the west side of the building.

The additional space will be used as a staging/warehouse area for the current laundry operations. Village President Dale Berman said he was happy to see the laundromat’s expansion.

Marberry also operates stores in Geneva, St. Charles and Aurora. The proposed addition also includes two load-

ing bays and one van loading area on the building’s north side and an overhead door on its western side.

Trustees also approved a special use permit allowing Animesh Kumar to reopen a gas station at 101 S. Lincolnway.

The gas station, which has been closed for more than a year, last operated as a Citgo station. The property has been acquired by a group owning and operating a number of gas stations throughout the state, including in Batavia and Aurora, and plans are to reopen the station as a BP station with a car wash.

As proposed, the station’s convenience store will be updated and the existing fueling canopy will be replaced. The fuel pumps will be updated as well, North Aurora Community and Economic Development Director Mike Toth said.

“They operate all of our equipment, they drive all of our apparatus,” Einwich said. “They are completely integrated into all of our field operations. We very highly

depend on them.”

It’s an important distinction because Geneva is “a full service department,” Einwich said.

“We provide fire rescue [emergency medical service] hazardous materials, technical rescue – which encompasses a specialty rescue type of situation, high angle trench rescue, confined space, building collapse,” he said.

BATAVIA – Jeff Glaser is being honored for his many years of dedication to the Batavia Emergency Services and Disaster Agency.

The Batavia City Council on Monday recognized his 39 years of service. He started with Batavia ESDA Jeff Glaser in 1974, became the agency’s director in 1978, and served with the agency until earlier this year.

“His 39 years of service is a tribute to his commitment to the community and his willingness to help others,” Batavia fire Chief Randy Deicke said in a memo to Batavia Mayor Jeff Schielke.

Batavia ESDA, a volunteer organization, recently was reorganized and now is under the control of Deicke.

Schielke has appointed Mark Davis as ESDA manager, and Davis will report to Deicke.

On Sunday, Westrom watched as Sorvino and the other cast members, including former “Diff’rent Strokes” star Todd Bridges, acted out different scenes in the independent movie “Precious Mettle.” The filming took place in an Aurora neighborhood close to where her sister, Brenda Kuntz, lives.

“I love the behind the scenes of how they do things,” Westrom said.

She also was on hand last year in Plano to watch the filming of “Man of Steel,” as well as for the filming of “Road to Perdition” in Geneva a few years back.

“It’s an adrenaline thrill,” Westrom said. “While they were filming ‘Road to Perdition,’ I got great pictures of Tom Hanks.”

“The sprinkler system kept the fire in check,” Batavia Deputy Fire Chief Randy Banker said Monday.

Firefighters arrived at 11:30 p.m. at the business at 351 S. Randall Road and had the fire under control at midnight.

8OBITUARIES DANNY H. MOULTON Born: July 26, 1950; in Rochelle Died: June 14, 2013 GENOA – Danny H. Moulton, 62 of Genoa and formerly of Lily Lake, died Friday, June 14, 2013, at Kishwaukee Community Hospital.

He was born July 26, 1950, in Rochelle, the son of Harvey and Mary (Stewart) Moulton. He married Julie Jacobson on May 18, 1984, in Geneva.

Danny was a roofing contractor who owned and operated AM Roofing for many years. He was an accomplished musician/drummer, playing with various local bands – including Captain Soul, Virgil Kane and Catfish & Crystal. He also met and played music with several famous musicians.

He enjoyed playing horseshoes and won many tournaments, along with being an avid baseball player.

Survivors include his wife, Julie Moulton of Genoa; two children, Nicole (Andrew) Karolus of Sycamore and Keith Moulton of Genoa; one sister, Cathy (Larry) Haseman of Columbus, Wis.; his motherin-law, Trudy (Gene) Stroyan of Rockford; and several nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by his parents; and his grandmother, Amanda Moulton.

Ruby worked in factories, as a waitress in DeKalb and at Kendall’s Ranch (now Sorrento’s) east of Sycamore, and ended up working until her retirement at Northern Illinois University’s Student Center as head grill cook.

A very sweet and kind “people” person, Ruby would do anything for anybody.

Many knew her as being very talented and creative. She could not read, but could look at a picture of a dollhouse and furniture, then make it out of plastic-canvas needlework. She loved to sketch in her growing-up years, then for her children. She also loved to paint with Artex. Her friends and family knew her love of animals of all kinds, especially cats and small dogs.

She is survived by her daughters, Patricia (Roger) Kahl of Maple Park and Carolyn (Mike) Therriault of Amboy; grandchildren, Christopher (Kim) Kahl of Tolleson, Arizona, Nicholas (Loren) Kahl of DeKalb, Matthew (Heather) Therriault of Atlanta, Ga., Dan (Jody) Therriault of Lombard, Vicki Therriault of Amboy, Christopher (Jessica) Smith of Pocahontas, Ark., Becky (John) Klawikowski of Brookfield, Wis., and Thomas (Julie) Hajostek of Waupaca, Wis.; great-grandchildren, Peyton, Aidan, Taylor, Josh, Benji, Gavi, Cassie, Ariel, Julie Ann, Jordan and Jasmine; two great-great-grandchildren; two very special nieces, Vickey (Rich) Becci and Linda Burgos; and many dear friends.

She was united in marriage to Richard “Dick” Yingst on Dec. 28, 1973, in Hobart, Ind. Shirley was an avid reader, quilter, stamper and sometimes, painter. She was the librarian at Hope D. Wall School for special-needs children in Aurora.

While living in Park Forest over 20 years ago, she served as a village trustee, president of the League of Women Voters, and was a branch manager at one of the local banks.

Her passions, after her family, were the creative outlet she received through her hobbies, and her church, where she was active as a member of the Hospitality Committee and involved in numerous other activities.

She is survived by her beloved husband, Dick of Batavia; her son, Adam Yingst of Batavia; her brother, George (Peggy) Katunich of Calabasas, Calif.; a brotherin-law, Bob (Janice) Yingst of Elk Grove Village; and many nieces, nephews, and dear friends.

She was preceded in death by her parents.

“We did not realize the secretary of state was not getting the information. It came to my attention when I came to the office Dec. 3. … It was not really properly followed up until it became ridiculously critical by all parties involved.”

Seyller chose not to run for re-election, and Hartwell was elected in November 2012.

Hartwell said he was hoping the secretary of state would take a lenient position so as not to hurt Kane County residents who did not know their records had not been forwarded.

“We did send the required notice,” Hartwell said. “This is crazy and unfair because of a computer problem. … We did get feedback that the information was received, but

the way the information was formatted, it was not able to be understood.”

Nosa Bridges, who now runs Jano, said his father did have a falling out with his business partner. Now that his father died late last year, he is running the company.

“We have not seen the Kane County system because they have not paid us for maintenance in six years,” Bridges said.

In addition to not getting the newest version of Jano, the county also did not get any

fixes or updates to the software. Jano supplies a similar system to circuit clerks in a half dozen other counties, including Sangamon, Madison and Kendall. Those counties continued to have Jano do upgrades and maintenance, Bridges said.

“Business was still being done,” Bridges said, adding that Jano is working to start anew with Kane County and plans to respond to the circuit clerk’s current request for proposals for a new operating system.

ST. CHARLES – For at least four years when Deborah Seyller was Kane County circuit clerk, more than 1,000 people charged with driving under the influence and other serious traffic violations did not have the dispositions of their cases forwarded to the Illinois Secretary of State’s Office as required, officials said.

In all, 1,393 people were affected from 2005 through 2008, said current Circuit Clerk Thomas Hartwell, because of a computer problem. When the clerk’s office sent the information about summary suspensions and revocations for each case to the secretary of state electronically, it was not received, said secretary of state spokesman Dave Drucker.

“We received nothing,” Drucker said. “I think they are up to date on current cases from 2008 to today, but as best we can tell, there is a backlog.

We met with his [Hartwell’s] predecessor and offered to have people come up and help if it was a manpower problem, but [Seyller] refused. We want this resolved and the records reported to us.”

Drivers who had their licenses revoked by a judge, for example, never actually had their licenses revoked because the information never was successfully passed along to the secretary of state. As Kane County works its way through the backlog by hand – Hartwell said – the state is sending revocation notices and seeking unpaid fines.

Seyller’s phone number was disconnected, and a message left at her current business was not returned. Hartwell said problems apparently came about when the circuit clerk’s computer system, Jano, was not updated or maintained for six or seven years.

What we don’t know about gun violence BLOOMBERG NEWS How do criminals get their guns? Are there observable patterns to gun crime? Who is at the greatest risk of injury, or causing injury to others, from firearm use? Which gun-safety practices are most effective at preventing accidental injury?

The answers to these and other basic questions remain difficult and obscure, in part, thanks to a senseless ban – on the books for a decade – that limits research on gun violence and denies researchers and even police and prosecutors access to federal gun data.

The laws prohibit the public disclosure of a gun’s sales history, make that data inadmissible in court, require the Justice Department to destroy background-check records within 24 hours and prohibit

the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives from requiring gun dealers to check their inventories annually for theft.

A recent report from the Institute of Medicine, an independent, nonprofit research organization, details just how thoroughly Americans are in the dark. The report, commissioned by President Barack Obama after the massacre of 26 students and educators in Newtown, Conn., underscores how little even serious scholars know about gun violence and shows how such ignorance jeopardizes public safety and health.

A better understanding of the “characteristics of firearm violence,” the “risk and preventative factors” for gun-related injuries, and the “impact of gun-safety technol-

ogy,” the report says, would undoubtedly help save lives.

By making reliable gun data scarce, the research ban has hamstrung police, prosecutors and public health officials in their response to an onslaught of 30,000 gun deaths a year.

Congressional opposition to gun data, which advances the anti-research agenda of the National Rifle Association, isn’t merely a policy position.

The lack of information has successfully restricted public debate itself. Healthy democracies do not resolve conflicts by stifling inconvenient evidence.

Imagine banning doctors from studying cancer cells or requiring radiologists to destroy X-ray records within 24 hours.

should be repealed in full. Given the influence of the NRA in this Congress, however, repeal will probably have to wait for the arrival of less easily cowed legislators. In the meantime, Congress should confront the gun lobby on the issue that most directly hurts public safety – the inadmissibility of gun-tracing data in court.

Police can’t stop criminals if prosecutors can’t bring them to justice.

Incremental repeal also has worked in the past. The NRA acquiesced to sharing gun-tracing data between police and criminal prosecutors in 2008 and to police use outside of criminal investigations in 2010. Prosecutors’ inability to use the evidence, though, neuters these expansions.

Obama’s efforts to aid research via executive action are

having some effect. One of his orders instructs the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention that a ban on spending “to advocate or promote gun control” is not a ban on research funding, as the CDC had long interpreted it.

Vice President Joe Biden, who is working with Majority Leader Harry Reid and Democratic Sen. Joe Manchin of West Virginia, says he hopes the Senate will revisit the issue of background-check legislation.

Background checks can make gun purchases more difficult for criminals and the mentally ill, but there is also a desperate need for research to better understand gun violence and responses to it.

Repeal of the Tiahrt amendments should be at the top of a sensible to-do list.

‘He just has conviction’ Cougars’ Dorris got jump-start on Cubs loyalty

By JAY SCHWAB jschwab@shawmedia.com GENEVA – Cougars relief pitcher Nathan Dorris backed the St. Louis Cardinals growing up, falling in line with the majority of baseball fans in deep southern Illinois.

Then Dorris attended a Cubs game at Wrigley Field with the family of a friend during middle school, and life – or at least his baseball fanhood – would never be the same.

“I just fell in love immediately,” Dorris said. “Switched to the dark side, if you will, as they put it down south.”

Dorris fell for the Cubs, and if the 22-year-old lefty keeps pitching this way, the feeling could become mutual.

One of six Cougars to make the Western Division’s Midwest League All-Star team, Dorris will take a quick detour from his sizzling season to participate in the league’s showcase game tonight in Dayton, Ohio.

“It’s just exciting to go out there and represent the Kane County Cougars, represent the Cubs and represent my family, and meet some of the guys around the league … and it’s just another opportunity to go out there and play baseball, which gets me excited,” Dorris said.

Left-handed batters are hard-pressed to summon similar enthusiasm when Dorris is on the mound.

The statistical calling card for Dorris this season: He has allowed only one hit to left-handed batters in 25 atbats.

He uses his curveball extensively against lefties while focusing more on his changeup as his offspeed against right-handed hitters, but Dorris said he tries not to pigeonhole himself as a potential specialist.

“My job is to get a hitter out, no matter what the case, left-handed or right-handed,” Dorris said. “I just go up there and try to pitch.”

The NI Big 12 isn’t the only conference that’s dealt with change recently.

For example, the Suburban Christian Conference recently lost seven of its schools to

the Metro Suburban, and the remaining five members are joining the Chicago Catholic League in football and boys soccer.

Carrick said that it’s a long shot for the NI Big 12 to expand by the time Dixon and Streator are gone. If the conference is not able to find two new schools by then, it would be aligned with two five-team divisions.

Rochelle would move to the West Division with old NCIC rivals Geneseo, LaSalle-Peru,

Ottawa and Sterling while DeKalb, Kaneland, Morris, Sycamore and Yorkville remained in the East.

When it comes to football, Carrick said the league has asked the IHSA for a temporary waiver asking for the champion of each division to be awarded an automatic bid to the state playoffs (champions of leagues with six teams get the automatic bid). In reality, the champion of each division should have no problem qualifying based on the

Johnson helps Cougars close first half with win KANE COUNTY CHRONICLE GENEVA – Pierce Johnson tossed a career-high seven scoreless innings Sunday and Reggie Golden drove in a pair of runs to give the Kane County Cougars a 4-2 win over the Wisconsin Timber Rattlers at Fifth Third Bank Ballpark to close out the first half of the Midwest League schedule.

The Cougars ended the first half of the season with a 30-36 record.

Johnson (5-5) worked just two perfect innings against

the Timber Rattlers (29-35), stranding runners in scoring position in the first, third and sixth innings. The biggest jam Johnson had to work out of was in the sixth inning when he surrendered a single sandwiched between a pair of twoout walks.

With the bases loaded, Mike Garza scalded a line drive right at Cougars third baseman Jeimer Candelario that ended the inning and the threat. Johnson walked three in the game and struck out five while allowing just one hit.

With Timber Rattlers starter Tyler Wagner on the mound, Golden sparked the Cougars offense in the third with a solo blast that ricocheted off the Fifth Third Bank Ballpark sign in left field. In the fourth, the Cougars scored three two-out runs by hitting for the cycle.

Rock Shoulders smashed a solo home run, his Midwest League-leading 13th of the season. Gioskar Amaya followed with a single.

Golden plated Escobar with a bloop RBI triple. Wagner (6-5) worked five innings allowing two home runs, seven hits and four runs.

The Timber Rattlers did not go down quietly against the Cougars bullpen. In the eighth inning, Nathan Dorris loaded the bases allowing a single and two walks. Garza delivered a two-out, two-RBI single to cut Wisconsin’s deficit in half and put the tying runners in scoring position. Dorris struck out Chris McFarland to get out of the jam.

Stephan Perasklis worked the ninth inning and allowed the tying runs to reach base with just one out. The righty induced a fly out off the bat of Max Walla before striking out Tyrone Taylor with a breaking ball to secure the win and his third save in three chances.

After the league all-star break, the Cougars open a four-game set Thursday at Quad Cities. Kane County returns home June 25 with the first game of a four-game series against the Beloit Snappers.

The Northern Illinois Big 12 Conference began competition during the 2010-11 school year.

Four years later, the league’s landscape will look a lot different. Dixon and Streator, both members of the West Division, are heading to different leagues after this school year. Dixon will join the Big Northern Conference, while Streator accepted an invitation to join to the Interstate Eight back in February.

Sycamore athletic director Chauncey Carrick said the league has talked to a number of schools, but that everyone seems to be happy where they’re at right now.

Carrick said the league doesn’t have a limit on its number of teams. It’s more concerned with finding community-based programs similar to the conference’s 10 schools still committed to the NI Big 12.

He did say the conference wants to stay at an even number.

“We would like to get as many teams as we can that are like our current membership. I don’t think there’s a number on that. It could be 12, it could be 20,” Carrick said.

“We’re not going to limit that.

strength of the conference’s programs in recent years.

“The automatic bid thing’s really not that big of deal anymore, to be honest,” Sycamore football coach Joe Ryan said.

“You’re fortunate enough to win our five-team league, you’re going to have plenty of wins to get into the playoffs.”

Carrick said one reason for aligning into two divisions, rather than having one 10-team conference like the NIC-10 or Northeastern Athletic, is giving the conference a chance for more playoff teams. Instead of nine games within the conference with one 10-team conference, the five-team divisions will still allow for nonconference games.

“From a scheduling standpoint [a 10-team league is] the easiest way to go,” Ryan said.

“But going the easiest way isn’t always the best way for the conference.”

Each team will play two crossovers, and will have to find three nonconference teams.

Carrick said that while the league is looking to expand, the format that will be in place for 2014-15 could be a long-term solution as well.

“I know that the schools that we currently have like being together,” he said. “We’re going to make the best we can out of it and move on.”

By KEVIN SHEPKE editorial@kcchronicle.com GENEVA – Batavia boys basketball coach Jim Nazos put it simply.

“Every time we take the court, we’re going to get better,” he said, “and that’s all we’re trying to do right now.”

After losing 11 seniors from last year’s squad, that’s all the soon-to-be second-year Bulldogs coach can focus on at this point in the offseason.

But being able to showcase his young team in Geneva Summer League play, Nazos has found just the recipe to give his varsity newcomers the experience they need moving forward.

“This is a great tournament for us to be in because there’s a lot of area schools and very good programs,” Nazos said.

“You’re not going to come here and play bad teams.

With that said, we’re not going to measure ourselves on wins and losses, but just focus on progress and getting better.”

Batavia ended the night Monday at Geneva with a 5037 loss to Kaneland, which moved the Bulldogs’ record to 1-3 in the summer league.

“We’ve been pretty strong so far and our seniors are playing well in their roles and leading how they should,” Nazos said.

“There’s also a few guys who were in the background last year and are doing well now.

“I can’t tell from our first five to our second and third five, because I think everybody is doing well. It’s also too early to tell that.”

On the flip-side with the Knights, coach Brian Johnson is looking at some new players for varsity, but already has some valuable experience returning for this year’s team.

Drew David, who will be a four-year starter at point guard, leads the group of veterans.

John Pruett as well as Ty Carlson are two other returnees whom Kaneland is hoping will provide leadership.

“I’m really happy with what those guys have been doing,” Johnson said.

“This kind of a tournament gives the veteran guys and especially the younger guys the chance to play some tough competition against schools in the area, which is great.”

The Knights (2-1 summer league) found themselves down 29-26 at halftime against Batavia despite a 13-point performance from Pruett in the first half, but they changed things dramatically in the second half thanks to an 11-0 scoring run to finish the final 5:14.

Pruett finished with a game-high 18 points.

Callahan had recruited Dorris out of high school as well as junior college.

“That was a tough thing, a tough thing for the university and the program,” Dorris said. “But [current SIU coach Ken Henderson] did a great job of stepping in. As far as I was concerned, I wasn’t going there to play for Callahan, I was going to be a part of the Saluki family, just their idea of baseball and the way they represented themselves.”

Dorris originally committed to Vanderbilt before re-routing to junior college after being drafted out of high school by the Atlanta Braves in the 45th round. The Cubs selected Dorris in the 17th round of the 2012 draft.

Cougars manager Mark Johnson called Dorris “a super competitor” who benefits from his mound presence.

“He just has conviction,” Johnson said. “When he’s on the mound, he has the ball and he has a plan and he throws each pitch with conviction. …

When you’re locked into making that one pitch ahead of time and you have conviction with it, good things usually happen.”

Dorris, who lives with a host family in St. Charles, said he has enjoyed the relative proximity to his family, which was able to visit him as recently as this weekend.

As for his buddies from southern Illinois who once were unimpressed by his decision to switch allegiances to the Cubs, they’ve had to do a little baseball soul-searching themselves in light of the trajectory Dorris’ career is taking.

“It turns out now all my friends at least have a little bit of a reason to cheer for the Cubs now even though they vowed they never would,” he said.

The Blackhawks’ speedy but streaky forward made his Stanley Cup Final debut Monday after watching the first two games as a healthy scratch. Stalberg failed to respond to his first two-game benching during the second round against the Detroit Red Wings.

“I think we need some speed from him,” Hawks coach Joel Quenneville told reporters after the morning skate. “I think we need energy.”

Some production on offense wouldn’t hurt, either.

After scoring nine goals with 14 assists in 47 regular-season games, Stalberg entered Monday with no goals and three assists in 15 playoff games.

His playing time dropped as he struggled, and he averaged only 1.4 shots per game.

The Hawks routinely have preached the importance of playing to one’s strengths.

In Stalberg’s case, that means relying on his terrific speed to generate scoring chances.

“Using it the right way, he’s a threat, gives us some speed on all lines,” Quenneville said. “It gives him something at least to contend with.”

Stalberg’s turbulent postseason could wind up costing him millions.

The 27-year-old forward is due to become an unrestricted free agent this summer,

but the Hawks and other teams might hesitate to guarantee big money to a player who struggled so badly in the playoffs that he was removed twice from the lineup.

Nothing personal: Brandon Bollig returned to his longtime role as a healthy scratch after playing the first two games of the series.

Bollig registered three shots on goal and posted a minus-1 rating while averaging more than 11 minutes of ice time in the series.

But he failed to clear the puck out of the Hawks’ zone in Game 2, which led to the Bruins’ game-winning goal.

Quenneville defended Bollig’s performance but said it was Stalberg’s turn to play.

“I think Bollig gave us a couple real strong games,” Quenneville said. “You can talk about the last play [in Game 2].

“Certainly, you like the predictability of his game. I thought he did a nice job.”

Hit parade: By the time the playoffs are finished, Bryan Bickell might end up leading the Hawks in hits as well as goals.

Bickell entered Game 3 with 68 hits, which edged out Brent Seabrook (66) for the most on the team. Andrew Shaw was third on the Hawks with 62 hits.

A steep drop exists until the next trio of Hawks’ hitters, which includes Patrick Sharp (39), Michal Rozsival (37) and Michal Handzus (35).

After pushing Heat to brink, Spurs still have work to do The WASHINGTON POST MIAMI – The circumstances are almost identical, and the scene was eerily reminiscent of the last time the Miami Heat headed home for Game 6 of the NBA Finals, trailing three games to two in the best-of-seven series.

The Heat had just lost a critical fifth game in Texas, and LeBron James sat to the right of Dwyane Wade, the two friends echoing each other as they discussed a disappointing effort and the need to play

with a greater urgency going forward.

Those comments proved to be hollow two years ago, when Miami lost in six games to the Dallas Mavericks. Time will tell if James and Wade can back up those words this time around, on the brink of elimination against the San Antonio Spurs.

“We’re in the same position going back home with Game 6 on our home floor. So we’re going to see if we’re a better ballclub and if we’re better prepared for this moment,”

Wade said late Sunday night after Miami fell to San Antonio, 114-104, in Game 5. “Everything happens for a reason.

And this is not a bad reason at all to go home for Game 6 on your home floor.”

Since his mystifying disappearance in that humbling loss to Dallas, James appeared to have matured into a player who has complete comfort in his abilities as the unquestioned best player in the game.

But even after winning his first championship, and adding two more most valuable

player awards and an Olympic gold medal, James finds himself facing elimination from another opponent with aging stars.

Tim Duncan once told James that the league would be his one day, but after a sixyear wait following their last title, the Spurs aren’t interested in becoming another conquest on the four-time MVP’s waltz to the Hall of Fame.

The Spurs have closed out two Finals opponents on the road and knocked out two others in at least six games, but

they have never needed to win a championship in six or seven games away from home.

Duncan, 37, is one win away from a fifth ring – which would tie him with Magic Johnson, Kobe Bryant and George Mikan – and the usually stoic, three-time Finals MVP revealed his passion on the third possession of Game 5, when he caught a pass from Manu Ginobili and threw down a vicious one-handed dunk.

“I think every one of us wants this very badly from the top on down,” Duncan said.

Flag Day was officially established in 1916 by President Woodrow Wilson. It became “National Flag Day” by a 1949 Act of Congress. Flags should be flown the whole week of June 14. Collectors of old flags display them framed under glass to protect them because they are such important historic relics and are usually in poor condition. But even a torn flag connected to an important event or person is of value, often worth thousands of dollars. An 1863 35-star U.S flag auctioned this year at Cowan’s of Cincinnati for $705. It had scattered holes and stains. One way to celebrate Flag Day is to put a vintage doll with a flag in your window. An “Uncle Sam” bisque doll made about 1918 by Handwerck, a German company, sold at a 2012 Theriault’s auction for $2,350. The doll was holding an American flag with 48 stars on it. *** Q: In 1945 I received six place settings of English “fish eaters.” They were a wedding gift from my aunt, who had owned the set since she got married.

So the set is close to being “antique.”

They’re marked, but I can’t read the mark, and they have bone or ivory handles.

called “fish feeders”) is a matching fish knife and fish fork - utensils designed to use when eating fish. A fish knife’s blade is flat and does not have a sharp edge.

It’s slightly curved on both sides - one side curved inward and the other out. A fish fork has three or four flat unsharpened tines, with the outer tines wider than the inner. A set of stainless-steel fish eaters with plastic handles would sell for under $100. A set made of sterling silver with ivory or bone handles is worth several hundred dollars. Ask someone to try to read the maker’s mark for you. That may help determine the value.

A: New York City’s skyline with the Statue of Liberty is probably the world’s most widely produced snow globe subject. Plastic globes were introduced in the 1950s, but construction of the Twin Towers wasn’t completed until the early 1970s. So your globe isn’t more than about 40 years old. While the Towers make your globe a touching souvenir, it would not sell for more than about $10.

Seth Rogen’s ‘This is the End’ is full-on comedic cataclysm

By DANA BARBUTO More Content Now “This Is the End” is an apocalyptic adventure in which Seth Rogen, James Franco, Jay Baruchel, Jonah Hill, Danny McBride and Craig Robinson play meta versions of themselves facing the end of the world.

The film, written and directed by Rogen and frequent collaborator Evan Goldberg, is funny on all fronts, as it pulls no punches in poking fun at themselves and taking digs at a self-important Hollywood – all with a metaphysical bent. Trying to figure out where Rogen and Goldberg are going is futile. In less capable hands, the film would have ceased being funny soon after the opening, when Rogen fetches Baruchel at LAX. On the way back to Rogen’s house, where the two Canadian buddies plan to smoke pot and play video games, they hilariously discuss cleanses and gluten while binging on Carl’s Jr.’s burgers.

Later, they land at a housewarming party at Franco’s new Hollywood Hills crib, located on the “sexiest street in America.”

There, everyone from Emma Watson to Mindy Kaling to Michael Cera casually drop in. The set-up is plausible, and this really does look like a Hollywood party with characters who feel sort-of real, which goes a long way in keeping the story grounded once things start getting wonky.

The few righteous among them are sucked up by a blue light and transported to heaven.

Franco, McBride, Robinson, Rogen, Baruchel and Hill, however, are left earthbound, where they reside in limbo until they can work out some issues. What ensues is some of the best potty-humor and juvenile situations I’ve seen in a long time. They will make you cringe, squirm, gag and laugh out loud. There’s a lot of heart, too, as the underlying question asks who’s worthy of heaven? But it’s done the dude way, so there’s lots of masturbation jokes and bickering about how to ration the last Milky Way. If there were an Oscar for best cameo, then one of the actors who shows up near the

end would win in a landslide.

I won’t reveal their identity, but if you pay attention to one of the names Rogen drops early on, you’ll figure it out.

Michael Cera’s portrayal of a hard-partying version of himself would run a close second.

Franco gives his best performance since he was Oscar-nominated for “127 Hours.” In fact, this movie will remind you why you used to like him. He is so self-deprecatingly delicious, making fun of past foibles and pursuits. “We should not make a sequel to ‘Your Highness,’” he tells McBride in one scene. In another, the two go toe-totoe in a heated and hysterical masturbation discussion that will knock you out of

your seat.

You just have to surrender to the silliness. But Rogen and Goldberg inject just the right dose of realism to keep the film grounded in something tangible. Even though the devil has an oversized appendage, they play the Rapture pretty straight, with references to the book of Revelations and talk about being worthy of ascension into heaven.

• “This is the End” is rated R for crude and sexual content throughout, brief graphic nudity, pervasive language, drug use and some violence. The cast includes James Franco, Jonah Hill, Seth Rogen, Jay Baruchel, Danny McBride and Craig Robinson. Grade: A-.

Chelation therapy not shown to decrease heart disease Dear Doctor K: I have heart disease. Will chelation therapy help reduce my risk of a heart attack?

Dear Reader: That’s a timely question, because a recent study of chelation therapy has generated a lot of interest and debate.

Chelation therapy is used to eliminate metals or other toxins from your body. During the procedure, chemicals are infused into your bloodstream.

When these chemicals find unwanted substances as they travel through your blood, they attach themselves to them and carry them out of the body in your urine. For people with toxic levels of lead or mercury, chelation therapy is an FDA-approved method to help with their removal from the body.

Its use for heart disease is more controversial. Here’s the idea: Heart disease results when your blood vessels are narrowed by atherosclerotic plaques that limit blood flow. These plaques are largely made up of fat, cholesterol and calcium. Chelation with a chemical called EDTA pulls calcium out of atherosclerotic plaques – or so the thinking goes. The study included 1,708 adults age 50 and older who had a previous heart attack. Half of the patients got 40 infusions of EDTA solution along with high doses of vitamin and mineral supplements. Half got a placebo (saltwater) solution. People were chosen for the chelation therapy group and the placebo group by a random process.

The researchers followed the patients for about 4.5 years.

Twenty-six percent of people in the chelation group had heart attack, stroke or hospitalization for chest pain or heart bypass surgery.

That was compared with 30 percent of patients in the placebo group. Statistical testing showed that the slightly lower rate of heart problems in the chelation group could have occurred by chance.

More troubling was the fact that many people who were

assigned to have chelation therapy never actually received the therapy. Nearly 20 percent dropped out of the study before completing the therapy. So drawing conclusions about the value of chelation therapy from this study is difficult.

There are more established ways to prevent heart attacks, stroke and premature death. For example: • Get active • Eat better • Don’t smoke • Control cholesterol • Manage blood pressure • Lose weight • Reduce blood sugar If you already have atherosclerosis, you should be taking a statin drug and a daily aspirin.

If you take these steps, I think the current evidence says that you’re unlikely to get any extra benefit from chelation therapy.

In contrast to that inconclusive evidence, the evidence on each of these lifestyle changes and medications is conclusive: They all definitely protect you from heart disease, strokes and premature death.

But what’s crucial is that the victim stands his or her ground.

Bullies are the scourges of schoolyards. They love to threaten, extort, assault and punish as long as the victim remains passive. In many cases, the victim is afraid to ask for help from teachers, administrators and even parents for fear that the bully will retaliate. As long as a bully can get away with it, the reign of terror will continue.

Good administrators will tell the teaching staff to be on the alert for incidents of bullying and will take swift action to see that it is eliminated immediately. But even when the staff is on guard to spot bullies, some incidents escape their attention.

Students who are being harassed should tell school personnel and their parents. This is usually enough to end the harassment.

Unfortunately, not all administrators consider bullying a serious problem; some refuse to believe bullies attend their school even when they are contacted by parents and students.

’TWEEN 12 & 20 Robert Wallace And some parents, for whatever reason, fail to take their child’s trouble seriously, leaving the victim utterly alone.

That’s when the victim must take matters into his or her own hands and, if words don’t work, fight back.

Bullies enjoy seeing the fear they instill in their victims, but they usually don’t enjoy fighting. Once the bully finds out his victim will defend himself, the bullying stops. Even if the bully wins the fight and the victim winds up with a fat lip, the wound will heal much faster than the emotional pain of doing nothing, which can last for years.

But, again, I stress that fisticuffs are the last resort and should be used only when all peaceful efforts have failed. I say this as a former high school principal.

Dr. Wallace: I’m really confused. I love my girlfriend very much, but recently I met another girl and she asked me to call her and I really want to. What should I do? – Ricky, San Jose, Calif.

Dear Ricky: It’s obvious that you are confused and really not in love with your girlfriend. In fact, you probably shouldn’t be going steady.

Why not talk to your girlfriend to see if an agreement can be made so that you both can continue dating each other, but at times also date other people?

This week we are looking at the handling of trump suits.

In today’s deal, South is in four hearts. West leads the club king.

When East encourages enthusiastically with his nine, West continues with the club queen and his last club. East wins with his ace and shifts to the diamond 10. How should South steer from there?

On the second round of the auction, North bid what he thought would be the best contract. Yes, here three no-trump is easy, but it is never easy to reach that contract with assurance when holding an eight-card major-suit fit.

If South just assumes everything will be favorable, he will draw trumps, take his spade king, play a spade to the ace, and cash the spade queen. Here, though, he will lose one diamond and three clubs to sink without a trace.

Although South is a slight favorite to gain five spade tricks, he needs only four. He should draw only two rounds of trumps, leaving an honor on the board, cash his spade king, play a spade to dummy’s ace, and ruff a spade in his hand. Then he can lead a trump to the dummy and cash the last two spades, discarding his diamond losers. South sails his ship triumphantly into port.

Think through the play when the dummy comes down, not later.
