Kaneland Foundation to host 5K run MAPLE PARK – The Kaneland Foundation will host its second annual 5K Cross Country Race at 8 p.m. Friday at the Kaneland High School football stadium, 47W326 Keslinger Road, Maple Park.

There also will be a quarter-mile Kids’ Track Run at 7 p.m. and a 1-mile cross country fun run/walk at 7:30 p.m.

The 5K will be timed, and awards will be offered in age groups and overall categories.

All runners who preregistered by June 15 will receive a T-shirt for participating. Packet pick-up begins at 5:30 p.m. Friday near the track at the high school campus.

Community festival a fun lesson in Swedish traditions

By ERIC SCHELKOPF eschelkopf@shawmedia.com GENEVA – Dressed from head to toe in a traditional Swedish outfit, Jill Crooker is more than happy to show off her heritage.

Crooker, a member of the Chicago-based Nordic Folk Dancers, helped lead the traditional Maypole dancing at Sunday’s 103nd annual Swedish Day festival at Good Templar Park in Geneva.

“We like to keep the traditions going that are forefathers started,” Crooker said. “It’s also good exercise.”

Sponsored by the local chapter of the International Organization of Good Templars, Swedish Day is an alcohol-free celebration of the Scandinavian tradition of Midsommar, the longest day of the year in Sweden.

Swedish Day has been held since 1925 in Good Templar Park. And one doesn’t have to be Swedish to partake in the day’s activities.

“Thanks for letting an Irish guy come celebrate with you,” said Geneva Mayor Kevin Burns, who was also on hand for the festivities.

Bob Nishikawa, of Batavia, has come to know about Swedish traditions. His wife’s family is part Norwegian. Dianne Peterson is known for her environmental activities in Batavia.

“I consider myself an honorary Swede,” said Nishikawa, who also lived in Stockholm, Sweden, for six months.

Their children, Anais Peterson and Boomba Nishikawa, are members of the Swedish American Children’s Choir, which performed Sunday as part of Swedish Day. Anais Peterson, 15, was named this year’s Midsommar Queen.

“It is an honor to be chosen,” she said.

Geneva will celebrates its Swedish roots during Swedish Days, which starts Tuesday. The Nordic Folk Dancers will be dancing at 4 p.m. Saturday as part of the Sweden Vast set up on Fourth Street, between Hamilton and State streets.

BATAVIA - Carolyn Burnham and others tasked with organizing downtown Batavia’s early summer festival, the Batavia Green Walk, knew the risks of throwing a party outside.

“It’s always hard with any outdoor event, because of the weather,” said Burnham, who serves on the Green Walk’s organizing committee. “But this event is all about showing people the opportunities they have to enjoy the outdoors.

“So it was important that this be outside, even if it does rain.”

And Saturday morning, rain fell throughout the morning, putting a damper on the sixth annual Batavia Green Walk.

Staged for the past five years, the Green Walk is intended to offer Batavia residents and visitors alike an opportunity to learn more about the surrounding environment, and the variety of local products, services and activities to help promote a more “green” lifestyle.

Burnham noted that this year, the event more than doubled its number of vendors and exhibitors, enlisting about 70 for the 2013 festival.

The various exhibitors were arrayed along the Riv-

cessions and “mini-lectures” presented on various topics, including Fox River water quality; conscious shopping and cooking; birds in the Fox River; and home energy efficiency, among others.

Morning rains, however, appeared to keep many people away, organizers said.

Joi Cuartero, executive director of Batavia MainStreet, which helped to sponsor and plan the event, estimated that by mid-afternoon, several hundred people had visited the festival. As sunshine broke through the clouds, she believed about 1,000 would come by the time it wrapped up at 4 p.m.

She also noted that the rain did not keep everyone away, as the event had been visited by “a number of people with umbrellas” in the morning.

Lenny and Kelly Peterson, of St. Charles, said they were drawn to the event by the farmer’s market, which offered them the chance to meet a farmer from whom they were buying produce through a community supported agriculture arrangement.

“I usually work on Saturdays, so this is kind of a unique chance for me to come down here with my family and check this out,” said Lenny. “It seems like a pretty neat event.

“Despite the rain.”

It didn’t matter much Saturday, though, due to another meltdown on the mound by starting pitcher Dillon Maples.

Maples didn’t survive the first inning, putting the Cougars in too deep of a hole as the Wisconsin Timber Rattlers knocked off the Cougars at Fifth Third Bank Ballpark, 11-5.

Cougars leadoff hitter Bijan Rademacher and No. 2 hitter Albert Almora continued to click offensively, combining for five hits. Almora notched hits in each of his first two at-bats, extending his hitting streak to 13 games.

“I like hitting in front of Albert, especially when he’s hot like this, because they’re going to give me pitches,” Rademacher said. “They’re not going to want me on first base because I can steal second and all of the sudden Albert’s going to get a base hit and we’ve got 1-0 right there, real quick.”

Rademacher, new to the leadoff role, showcased his offensive versatility, notching an RBI double, bunting for a hit and crushing a first-pitch fastball over the right field wall for a solo home run with two outs in the bottom of the ninth.

The bunt has long been a key part of Rademacher’s game.

“For the most part my whole career I’ve been able to bunt the ball whenever I’ve wanted to, whatever pitch is there,” Rademacher said. “I’ve been successful at it. College, that’s all we did, we had hour practices bunting, so that’s where I really honed in the skill, and I’ve just carried it over to pro ball.”

Rademacher (.331 batting average), Almora (.420 batting average) and the rest of the offense were doomed to play catch-up baseball when Maples couldn’t find the strike zone for the second straight outing.

“When you don’t throw strikes or you don’t locate the way you want to, I think it’s a combination of both,” Mark Johnson Kane County Cougars manager Rapids, Maples was unable to complete an inning against the Timber Rattlers, throwing more than 40 pitches in allowing four runs on four walks and two hits.

“It’s an organizational policy if a guy goes over 35 pitches in one inning, he can’t go back out,” Cougars manager Mark Johnson said. “That’s an organizational thing, and usually if they go over 35 or 40, you’ve got to go get him.

So that’s out of our hands. That’s just what we have to do as an organization to protect our players.”

A 14th-round selection by the Cubs in the 2011 draft, Maples commanded a $2.5 million signing bonus, but is now mired in a severe rut that Johnson said might

be both physical and mental.

“When you don’t throw strikes or you don’t locate the way you want to, I think it’s a combination of both,” Johnson said. “And if it isn’t, it will be. You can’t help but think about why you’re not making your pitches or why you’re not locating.”

Justin Amlung, Felix Pena and Lendy Castillo chewed up the remaining 8-plus innings for the Cougars (29-36), with Pena throwing four innings of onerun relief.

Cougars middle-of-the-order threat Rock Shoulders, who has slumped somewhat after a torrid start to the season, was given Saturday off.

“He hasn’t been where he was the first two months of the season, which is obvious, but he comes to the field ready to work and ready to get better every single day, and that’s how you get better,” Johnson said.

Wisconsin (29-35) will go for the series sweep Sunday afternoon in the final game of the season’s first half for both teams. The Midwest League All-Star Game is Tuesday in Dayton, Ohio.

Guys 1. Bobby Hess, Geneva. Dude was a beast in both football and baseball. Yeah, the teams didn’t have as much success as you’d have liked, but can’t really put that on this speedy, slugging, touchdown-scoring senior.

2. Joe Hoscheit, East. One of the best linebackers around in football, and one of the top couple hitters for the stately Saint baseball team.

3. Drew David, Kaneland. Heck of a quarterback for the Knights, even with some injury issues late in the fall, and hit some clutch shots for the Knights roundballers, too.

4. Dylan Nauert, Kaneland. Another football standout for the Knights who did himself proud once again during track season.

5. Phil Schuetz, ACC. One of the top scorers in the area for the Chargers basketball team and a stalwart in the lineup for ACC baseball, which had one of its best seasons in years.

Gals 1. Liza Fruendt, Batavia. Fruendt wasn’t the KCC Girls Basketball Player of the Year for nothing, and she’s also a force on the tennis courts. Sly loves those unlikely combos, like hoops and tennis.

2. Carly Pottle, St. Charles East. Pottle might as well have been Hilton’s shadow, as much as the girls were together this year, and like Hilton, Pottle was a huge factor in the Saints basketball and soccer teams’ success.

3. Camille Dela Cruz, Burlington Central. Dela Cruz added a little veteran presence to a very young and very good BC girls hoops team, which went on an amazing role to a 3A supersectional. Also a top-notch, D-I bound soccer player.

4. Quincy Kellett, Rosary. Kellett has pocketed 27 goals two straight years in soccer. Guess that freshman year wasn’t a fluke.

Also one of the top ballers for Rosary hoops.

5. Allyson O’Herron, Kaneland. Incumbent Female AOY did more quality work this year for Kaneland girls hoops and softball.

STANLEY CUP GAME 3: HAWKS AT BOSTON, 7 P.M. TODAY, NBCSN

And while it’s true that the Hawks’ defensemen make Crawford’s job easier, it’s also true that Crawford has made his teammates’ job easier on offense.

Consider the following.

When the Hawks have scored at least three goals during the postseason, they have won 10 games and lost zero. When they have scored at least two goals, they are 13-1.

That’s not too much to ask.

A team loaded with star players such as Jonathan Toews, Patrick Kane, Marian Hossa and Patrick Sharp should be able to muster a pair of goals a game. Then again, the Bruins have proved that they play excellent team defense in addition to having a standout goaltender in Finnish phenom Tuukka Rask.

As the Hawks re-learned Saturday in Game 2, one goal is not going to be enough.

They’re 0-5 when scoring one or fewer goals in the playoffs.

It seems that everyone has taken notice of Crawford’s stellar postseason, including

a horde of national media members who have packed the Hawks’ locker room in recent weeks. Many have bobbed from player to player, asking a similar question about Crawford.

Why has the Hawks’ goaltender been overlooked?

“You tell me,” said Toews, who has consistently praised Crawford during the past few years. “I think we all know in this locker room how good Corey Crawford is.”

So good that he has been mentioned as a goaltender for Team Canada in the 2014 Olympics.

That’s a big deal. Canada is to hockey what Illinois is to imprisoned governors.

“I’m happy people are asking the [Olympics] question all week, because I certainly think he deserves it,” Toews said. “I feel like to get to that level, you need to have some sort of name in the media and have people know who you are.

“If they didn’t really before, I think everyone knows who Corey Crawford is now.”

CHICAGO – Corey Crawford headed into the playoffs as a question mark.

By now, the Blackhawks goaltender has transformed into an exclamation mark.

The final outcome will be anybody’s guess when the Hawks visit the Boston Bruins on Monday for Game 3 of the Stanley Cup Final. The Hawks and Bruins split the first two games of the series, which included four overtimes, while scoring five goals apiece.

Far more certain is the reliability that Crawford will provide the Hawks in net.

An overtime win against the Bruins in Game 1 solidified Crawford’s status as the favorite to win the Conn Smythe Trophy as the playoffs MVP if the Hawks clinch the Stanley Cup. And while Crawford allowed the overtime goal in Game 2 that evened the series, the Hawks’ message was clear afterward regarding the play of their goaltender.

Without Crawford, the Hawks would not have had a chance to win in the first place.

“He was great,” Hawks coach Joel Quenneville told reporters after Saturday’s overtime loss. “He kept us in there. They had some great looks in overtime around the net. [He] stands tall finding that puck. Gives us a chance.”

He’ll keep giving the Hawks a chance in what is shaping up to be a memorable series.

In 19 playoff games, Crawford is 13-6 with a 1.72 goals-against average and a sterling .935 save percentage.

He has given up more than three goals only once – Game 2 against Detroit – and he has limited opponents to two goals or fewer in 13 of his 19 playoff starts.

Dear Abby: My husband and I have five kids, all under 6 years of age. The youngest are 7-month-old twins. A family in our church has offered to watch them so my husband and I can go out on a date. We haven’t been alone together in a year. We have no family or friends nearby to offer respite.

I would like to accept their kind offer, but two things are holding me back. First, I don’t think they realize the enormity of the task, and it feels like we might be imposing.

Second, I don’t have anything to say to my husband. A date would be awkward and most likely consist of “relations.” I like my husband, but I’d rather be left alone. What would you do? – Frazzled Mom With No Support Dear Frazzled: Before placing your small children in the care of others, invite the family over to see exactly how much work would be involved in watching them. Then discuss with your husband what date night will entail and see if you can agree on what would be a fun night out.

You definitely need a break, and some alone time should be something to look forward to. That it isn’t is of concern to me. It’s possible you could benefit from marriage counseling to help re-establish a line of verbal communication. And equally important, because you suspect the evening “might” result in relations, make sure you have birth control to prevent an accidental pregnancy.

Dear Abby: In this season of graduations and weddings, I would like to urge the honorees to send proper thank-you notes to friends and family who give them gifts and money. Time, money and preparation are put into these events, and the effect is spoiled when guests have to contact stores or scrutinize their bank statements to learn if their gifts were, indeed, received but simply not acknowledged.

Thank-yous aren’t difficult.

Some “rules”: Rather than text or email, write a note on paper and mail it with a stamp via the U.S. mail.

When you are in a trump contract, perhaps your first question is: “How quickly should I draw trumps?”

There is no simple answer, but the basic guideline is that the more trumps you have, the quicker you should remove the opponents’, especially when you can do it without losing the lead.

When you have only eight or nine trumps, you might delay drawing them; in fact, you might never touch them at all. In particular, if you do not have the trump ace, think twice before leading a trump.

In today’s deal, how should South plan the play in four spades after West leads the club king?

Declarer looks at his 13 cards, takes dummy’s high cards into account, and counts his losers.

Here, he has five: two hearts, two diamonds and one club. The minor-suit losers are unavoidable, so South must ruff his two heart losers on the board.

However, suppose declarer wins with his club ace, cashes the spade ace and top hearts, then ruffs a heart on the board. What happens next?

South cannot get back to his hand. And when he plays, say, a club, West will win and surely return a trump, killing the second ruff. Instead, declarer should immediately take his top hearts, ruff a heart with dummy’s spade eight (so the mean and nasty East cannot overruff), play a spade to his hand, and ruff his last heart with the spade king. Then 10 tricks roll in.

Yes, South could also duck the first trick, allowing him to ruff a club in his hand.
