Lemont Boy Scout Ryan Lambe led a project to clean up Lemont High School’s dugouts.

from his Boy Scout troop, fellow members of the Lemont High School Band, friends and family. He solicited donations from local businesses to pay for food for volunteers.

Once everything was ready, volunteers worked six hours each day to finish the project.

Lambe said he is happy with the result.

“I actually got a lot of thankyous from the athletic director, the maintenance workers and people who just drive by the high school,” he said.

Before he can become an Eagle Scout, Lambe needs to finish the paperwork for the final plan of the project, complete a few more merit badges and go before a board of review.

Lambe said the leadership and communication skills he has learned from being in Boy Scouts should help him in his desired career as a physical therapist.

“Being a physical therapist, you have to interact with a lot of people,” he said. “I can relate to people who are kids, all the way to adults.”

LEMONT – When deciding what to accomplish for his Eagle Scout project, Ryan Lambe asked Lemont High School Athletic Director John Young if there was anything he could do for the athletic department.

“I’m very involved with sports and know the athletic director very well,” said Lambe, who will be a senior next year.

As a result, the Lemont resident led a project to repaint the baseball field dugouts outside Lemont High School.

“The dugouts were really bad. The last time they were repainted was six to 10 years ago,” Lambe said. “They looked all worn down. There was dust and dirt all over the place.”

Although the repainting was from June 3 to 5, the planning started in March.

Lambe’s responsibility was not to do the painting but to coordinate the project from start to finish, including getting materials and finding volunteers.

“It was kind of stressful, to be quite honest,” he said.

Lambe worked with Bruce Nelson, director of buildings and grounds for Lemont High School District 210, to figure out what kind of paint and rollers he would need. The athletic department bought the materials.

Central Park has a dog day afternoon SUBURBAN LIFE MEDIA LEMONT – Dogs and their owners gathered at Central Park Dog Park in Lemont on Sunday during the For the Love of Dogs event.

Dogs participated in a walk on the Open Space path and costume and trick contest – all while raising money to help those who cannot afford emergency veterinarian care.

Vendors at the event included Pawz & Klawz Pet Salon, Purrfurred Pet Styling, Ludwigs Feed Store, Barking Angels Service Dogs, and Brannigan Chiropractics.

by Lemont Township, which also is planning a Howlaween Celebration on Oct. 27.

Lightning strike likely sparked fire that destroyed Lemont home

By DAN FARNHAM dfarnham@shawmedia.com LEMONT – A Lemont home burned to the ground Wednesday evening in a fire suspected to have been started by a lightning strike.

The fire occurred about 6 p.m. at 16453 Alba, Lemont Fire Protection District Chief Carl Churulo said.

Although the family was home during the fire, all residents were evacuated without injury.

Churulo said the fire started on the second floor, which was fully engulfed by the blaze by the time firefighters arrived at the scene.

He said the number of lightning strikes in the area at the time suggested lightning was the cause, but could not confirm this because the extent of the damage may have destroyed other potential causes.

Churulo said resident Melanie Dennis told first responders that the house shook when she called in the fire.

Dennis had rented the home five weeks ago and just moved her belongings into the house last weekend, Churulo said.

Churulo described the house as being in the middle of a field, down a dirt and rocky road that is wide enough only for one vehicle at a time. With the amount of rain, the road was nearly impassable in spots.

Because there are no fire hydrants in the area, first responders transported water tanks to the scene to combat the flames.

About 10 nearby districts and departments assisted Lemont in fighting the fire.

By DAN FARNHAM dfarnham@shawmedia.com LEMONT – To determine the future of the closed Central School and adjacent parking lot, the District 113A school board moved to form an ad hoc committee during its June 5 meeting.

“We need to investigate thoroughly what our options are,” board president Cindy Kelly said.

New board member Patrick Kerrigan will head the committee, which also is expected to consist of board member Mike Aurelio, director of operations Pam

Mazurek, business manager Barbara Germany, superintendent Susan Birkenmaier and a principal.

Birkenmaier said because the district still is paying for upkeep of the building and utilities, they need to make a decision on the school.

She said the district does not have any plans for use of the building or preference on whether to keep, lease or sell the property.

“This committee is starting with a blank slate,” she said.

Birkenmaier’s initial suggestion was to wait until the fall for the committee to meet because of the hectic schedules some key district administrators have during the summer. But Kerrigan did not want to wait.

“I’d like to get some sort of direction by the fall,” he said.

Aurelio was a new member on the board when they voted unanimously to close the school at the end of the 2010-11 school year. He said the district was in the middle of financial turmoil then, but he now regrets voting to

close the school.

“I regret closing an asset and receiving no utility out of it whatsoever,” he said.

Aurelio said when making a decision about the school, he wants “to be mindful of the taxpayers’ hard-earned money.”

“I would like to see all assets be used in a useful way.”

Village of Lemont to promote assistant administrator to top spot

Schafer is replacing Ben Wehmeier, who is leaving for a job in Wisconsin.

“I am truly excited for the opportunity to become the next village administrator for this great community,” Schafer said in a statement. “I look forward to working with the

Village Board, staff, residents and others in accomplishing the community’s goals over the coming George years.” “ I b e l i e v e Schafer that George has the capabilities and has proven himself as a

worth administrator,” Lemont Mayor Brian Reaves said Wednesday.

Reaves made the appointment at the Lemont Village Board on Monday. The board will discuss and vote on Schafer’s contract during the June 24 meeting.

Lemont woman pays tribute to daughter, NFL son with interior design business

By ED MCMENAMIN emcmenamin@shawmedia.com LEMONT – When NFL player and Lemont native Coby Fleener buys his first home, he won’t have to look further than Downers Grove for someone to design its interior.

His mother, Michelle Nagel Fleener, opened the doors to her interior design business, Cobri Decor, last month at 933 Curtiss St. in Downers Grove.

Nagel Fleener of Lemont operated the business from her home in Lemont until deciding this winter she wanted a storefront for visibility and exposure. The new space also allows her to show clients furniture and other items in person, rather than from a catalog.

She said she thought of the name for the store – Cobri is a combination of her two children’s first names, Coby and Briana – when the two were little.

“I thought, ‘One day I’ll have a store,’ and I was trying to come up with names,” she said. “I’ve always remembered it ever since. As a single mom, raising them, it was always important to have them in my life. It was a little tribute to them.”

Visitors to the store can see vignettes collecting pieces of furniture and decorations to show how a room might be designed. There also is an art

“There are all different personalities. But you really have to figure out and study that person, or that couple or that family. Even if they say one thing, they may not (really want it). You have to understand where they’re coming from.

“In the end, they’re the ones living there, and they need to be happy. If I don’t read them well, nobody is going to be happy.”

Nagel Fleener describes her own style as eclectic, a mixture of contemporary and traditional.

Police ID 4 dead in Darien murder-suicide

dciamprone@shawmedia.com DARIEN – DuPage County sheriff’s police are investigating the deaths of four family members whose bodies were found Tuesday in their home near Darien in Downers Grove Township.

Jeana Andrus, 48; Jessica Andrus, 22; Jennifer Andrus, 16; and David Andrus, 50, were found shot to death.

According to autopsy reports, the women’s deaths have been ruled homicides while David Andrus’ death was ruled a suicide.

No further information was provided this week by the DuPage County Sheriff’s Office.

Sheriff’s spokeswoman Dawn Domrose said officers were called to the home in unincorporated DuPage County on a report of a disturbance about 3:30 p.m. Tuesday.

Authorities haven’t revealed what may have led to the murder-suicide, citing an ongoing investigation.

The incident occurred at 555 Oldfield Road, and police had blocked off the street near Oldfield and Robert

“I got here at about 5:15, and it was just lit up with police cars and helicopters were in the sky,” Linda DeFranco of Darien said.

David Andrus is a descendant of Thomas Andrus, who was one of the original settlers of Darien in 1835.

“The Andruses who live on Oldfield Road are related to Thomas Andrus,” said Dean Rodkin, a member of the Darien Historical Society. “To be honest with you, I can’t tell you how that lineage goes.”

Thomas Andrus settled along an old stagecoach line, which was about where Interstate 55 was in 1835. He opened the Andrus Inn, was justice of the peace, served as town clerk and was county commissioner.

David Andrus and his family lived about a block north of Andrus Road, which was named after the founder. Their home had not been passed down through the Andrus family.

“As far as the people who live on Oldfield, I’d never had any contact with them,” Rodkin said.

Village Board approves class for young shoplifters, new radios for police

By DAN FARNHAM dfarnham@shawmedia.com LEMONT – Judges will have the option of requiring those convicted of theft or retail theft to complete an educational course after the Lemont Village Board approved a change to the municipal code during its Monday meeting.

The class would be available for those younger than 21 and be in place of the current penalty of a fine or community service, which “may not be sufficient to motivate corrective behavior,” according to the proposal in the meeting agenda.

Lemont Police Chief Kevin Shaughnessy said the state offers the program but the community would be better served by a class taught by Lemont police officers.

“This is a localized effort to take those under 21 years old and give them an education on the issue of shoplifting,” he said.

The board also authorized the Lemont Police Department to buy 10 Starcom 21 Interoperability portable radios and accessories. The department

“Interoperability is paramount,” he said. “This brings us a step closer to having that ability, in a crisis especially.”

LEMONT – Gov. Pat Quinn has approved a nearly $1 million capital investment for bridge painting on the structure carrying Illinois Route 83 (Kingery Highway) over the S&S and I&M canals.

The painting will be done

by ERA Valdivia Contractors, Inc., of Chicago. According to an Illinois Department of Transportation spokesperson, a pre-construction meeting has not yet been held to determine the start date of the project.

The project is part of a $37 million investment in Cook County construction through Quinn’s “Illinois Jobs Now!” program.

Lemont Village Administrator Ben Wehmeier said the $982,000 project should help with the long-term maintenance of the bridge by protecting it against weather erosion.

Wehmeier said the village also has discussed with IDOT about making repairs to the Lemont Road bridge. The concrete road on the north end has potholes that need to be repaired. The village has been filling the pot holes as a shortterm solution, he said.

K-Five Construction Corporation, a third-generation family business in Lemont, is being paid more than $3.8 million to do several of the construction projects in Cook County, including a five-mile resurfacing project in Bridgeview, for more than $3 million.

Vice President Jennifer Krug McNaughton said the company bid aggressively for the Bridgeview project and the state investments are a good pay day for the company.

“We really enjoy putting people and families to work here,” she said. “And you also give great returns to the motorist.”

Edgar shared his insights on political leadership while lunching with representatives from nearly 50 chambers of commerce at the Illinois Chamber of Commerce’s annual Employer Action Day in Springfield on May 20.

Illinois Chamber President and CEO Doug Whitley jokingly introduced Edgar – who appointed Whitley, then-president of the Taxpayers Federation of Illinois, as his director of Illinois’ Department of Revenue to start his first term in 1991 – as Illinois’ last former governor not convicted of misconduct and sent to prison.

Before his election as a state representative in 1976, Edgar served on the staff of former Illinois Sen. Leader William Russell Arrington, whom he described as the Illinois legislature’s power-wielding forerunner to current House Speaker Michael Madigan. In a 2007 newspaper story, Madigan himself credits Arrington as being “the father of the modern General Assembly.”

Edgar then shared the story of how Arrington – despite his tax-opposing stances personally and politically – spent his Legislature-controlling party’s capital to support Republican Gov. Richard Ogilvie’s push to enact the state’s first income tax in 1971.

Arrington did so because he believed the legislation served in the best interest of Illinois and its residents. Two years later, Democrats gained control of the General Assembly behind Gov. Dan Walker and Arrington retired from office.

When the former Secretary of State became governor, Illinois was facing a fiscal crisis. While Republicans controlled the House (behind Elmhurst’s Lee Daniels) and Senate, Edgar still worked closely with Madigan-led Democrats to eliminate the backlog of the state’s unpaid bills, reduce the size of state government and build up a budget surplus. In addition, he backed legislation that changed the way Illinois schools are funded and overhauled the state’s child welfare system.

Simply put, the role of elected officials is to solve problems, not to play politics.

8LETTERS Reader questions trust in government To the Editor: My family is not a politicized family, and government policy rarely is commented upon.

We trust that while political parties debate the issues, government entities – like the IRS – operate according to their mandate and follow the laws of this country.

Recent news makes me wonder. Can these government agencies really be trusted to execute their jobs fairly? The leaders of the IRS initially lied to the House Ways & Means Committee then later admitted to discriminating practices.

When pressed by Congress, former Commissioner Miller stated they did nothing illegal.

Lois Lerner, responsible for the IRS’s tax exempt groups, has pleaded the Fifth Amendment and will not face congressional investigators.

Today, I feel a strong lack of trust in our government, a feeling that is increasingly bipartisan.

Today I take a stand against this behavior by sending my comments and questions to my Congressman, Peter Roskam. I know that he is in the middle of this IRS investigation as a member of the House Ways &

Means Committee.

His pressing questions get to the heart of the issue: transparency, incompetency, corruption and its effect on Americans.

It’s possible I have found what I was looking for: someone I trust.

Time for Sen. Kirk to go?

To the Editor: Sen. Mark Kirk and Rep. Bobby Rush smoked the peace pipe (June 4) on camera.

It was their way of resolving the brouhaha over Kirk’s call for arresting all 18,000 alleged members of Gangster Disciples street gang to combat violent Chicago crime, and Rush’s calling out Kirk’s horrendous idea as a “an upper middle class white boy” solution to the problem.

Rush has gotten most of the criticism as “white boy” moniker is a recognized racial slur, while Kirk’s call for unconstitutional and likely racist mass arrest of legally innocent young black males was simply called “impractical” by Chicago punditry.

However, as an upper middle class white boy myself, albeit one with a modicum of racial understanding and sensitivity, I

was horrified by Kirk’s demand.

Any person of color knows that when a rich, upper middle class white political leader issues a blanket call for mass arrest of young black males, he is either an overt racist, a racially insensitive fool or a cynical politician playing the race card for political gain.

There is another explanation for Kirk’s inexplicable gaffe that we’ve not seen before in his 12-year Congressional career.

He could be mentally impaired by the effects of the devastating stroke that keep him out of the Senate for most of 2012.

My guess is Kirk will stay. If he does, there is a violent gang he might consider investigating for possible sanction under strictly Constitutional guidelines.

I refer to the war party gang which has spent the past 12 years spending trillions of dollars getting hundreds of thousands of people killed in criminal wars for nothing except the enrichment, power or bloodlust of the gang members.

That might be tough for Sen. Kirk since, as one of the biggest warmongers in the U.S. Senate, he would have to investigate himself.

Lemont trustee’s restaurant PC’s Pancake Cafe to close

By DANIEL FARNHAM dfarnham@shawmedia.com LEMONT – PC’s Pancake Cafe, 1264 State St., Lemont, will close June 23, according to a post on its Facebook page.

The restaurant was bought in 2006 by Paul Chialdikas, who was elected to the Lemont Village Board in 2009.

“The business has not been what it used to be,” Chialdikas said. “There’s nobody to blame. We’re all victims of this economy.”

Chialdikas said while owning the restaurant, he has enjoyed the people he met and experiences he shared with them.

While the restaurant also served as a way for him to communicate with constituents, he said the restaurant was more of a place for enjoyment than politics.

“People respected me for that,” he said. “And for that I was happy.”

Customer Aloha Jessen of Lemont said the loss of the restaurant would leave a void because it was the only sit-down breakfast place near her.

“It was a nice meeting place,” she said. “Paul made it very comfortable. It’s the only diner in Lemont we really enjoy.”

Author investigates paranormal Bartlett resident explores supernatural, superstitious beliefs in first book

By BONNIE CLASSEN msleditorial@shawmedia.com “Piercing the Veils of Death (A Paranormal Exploration)” is Dane Ladwig’s self-published book, which he describes as “an adventure through the hereafter of paranormal, supernatural and superstitious beliefs, where faith intercedes and life questions reason.”

The book sold more than 500 copies the first weekend, and a barrage of questions and comments from curious readers anxious to share their own experiences, or delve into the world of supernatural phenomena, overflow from Ladwig’s in-box.

The book opens with the story of a young man attending his own funeral and then turns nonfiction, as the author probes his own supernatural experiences and explores related topics such as apparitions, the spirituality of the American Indian, even the death of pets. The book ends with interviews of professional paranormal investigators explaining what happens when they are called out on an alleged haunting or sighting.

Ladwig is a Bartlett resident, a graduate of Elmhurst College and Moody Bible Institute and an ordained chaplain, with degrees in English, philosophy and theology. Before the release of his book, he hosted an online radio show, “A View From My Loft,” in which he interviewed authors including best-selling crime writer RJ Parker, now one of Ladwig’s closest friends and mentors.

“We just clicked,” Ladwig said. “He is a seasoned writer, a cornucopia of knowledge, and he taught me a lot about self-publishing and also marketing. I am grateful for his wisdom and friendship.”

A portion of proceeds from the book will be donated to fighting Noonan syndrome, a congenital disorder. And Ladwig offers free copies to veterans, service members and civil servants, noting, “These people put their lives on the line every day for my freedom to be able to write, and this is one small way to show my gratitude and thanks.”

Top golfer Lemont grad Groselak transforms lessons with dad into MVP career at Augustana

By SCOTT SCHMID sschmid@shawmedia.com LEMONT – In a golf era of private lessons and swing coaches, Jake Groselak is a bit of a throwback.

The Lemont High School graduate, who recently wrapped up his sophomore year at Augustana College, learned the game of golf from his dad, Glenn.

“I started playing when I was 11 or 12,” said Groselak, who has two younger brothers (Ben will be a senior at Lemont and Nick is heading into eighth grade). “I’ve never really had a swing coach. I learned pretty much everything I know from my dad.

“Basically every weekend we’d go out and play. We started off playing short par-3 courses because that’s the best places to learn.”

Groselak went on to have a nice career at Lemont, where he also played baseball for four years and basketball for two seasons.

“Freshman year was not really a good year,” he said, “but after that, I picked up my practicing.

Sophomore year I traveled downstate with the team as an alternate and then junior and senior year, I played on the teams that made it downstate.

“I got to play with some really good guys. I was around the three or four man. We were fifth as a team my junior year and seventh my senior year. I was pretty lucky.”

These days, Groselak finds himself as the top guy on the Vikings’ team, which competes in the College Conference of Illinois and Wisconsin.

He was named team MVP this spring for the second consecutive year after finishing with a stroke

He posted the score in a junior tournament on Cog Hill’s No. 3 course. average of 80.4.

“I was happy with it but there is always room for improvement,” Groselak said. “I started off not really how I wanted to but as the season progressed, I played better.”

As for the differences between high school and college golf, the main one has to do with the courses.

“The courses are longer,” he said, “so it is definitely beneficial to be a longer hitter. The nice thing is we get to play at a lot of country club courses. We are really lucky to be able to play all those courses. And the competition is really good. We are playing teams like Carthage, North Central and Millikin.”

This summer, Groselak is hoping to practice or play at least five times a week as well as compete in a few tournaments. In addition, the junior is working at his dad’s dentist office.

“I’m working on getting into the 70s,” said Groselak, a biology major who has his sights set on becoming a dentist himself. “That’s my focus, to get my average lower.

By next year, I’d like to see my average lower by three strokes or so.

I’d like to get down to around a 77 average.”

Rise to power

Two travel coaches, to be precise.

When she was a younger player, two coaches in two different travel softball programs told her she had no future as a pitcher.

“It was definitely devastating to hear, but they pushed me to where I am today,” the recent Downers Grove North graduate said. “I wanted to prove those people wrong.”

She did that in a big way. A four-year varsity player for the Trojans, Heflin was part of four of the most successful Trojan teams in program history: four conference championships, two regional titles and North’s first appearance in a sectional championship game in more than 30 years.

Heflin’s stellar pitching was a foundation of the Trojans’ success during her varsity stint, but if there was one constant it was that she would deflect praise to those around her.

“She’s so humble. She would never talk about herself,” North coach Mark Magro said. “She was confident, but not cocky. She never put herself ahead of her teammates.”

Humility is something Heflin always has had, and it’s a trait that became even more ingrained thanks to the two coaches who said she should shelve the idea of being a pitcher, and her parents.

“Growing up there were some humbling experiences,” she said. “I had to work hard to get to where I am, and my parents told me never to brag, so it comes from my parents

and how they brought me up.”

Those two travel coaches obviously didn’t see what Heflin’s youth coaches in DOLLS saw or what a slew of high school coaches saw when she stepped inside the pitcher’s circle.

That is, an athletic player, a hard thrower and a fierce competitor.

“Heflin is all that they say she is,” Downers Grove South coach Ron Havelka said. “She’s a great pitcher.”

“We haven’t faced a pitcher like Heflin all year,” Benet coach Jerry Schilf said before Heflin and the Trojans topped the Redwings in the playoffs.

“Without a doubt she’s the best pitcher we’ve seen.”

After starting her softball career in first grade, Heflin assumed her pitching duties in second grade and has been at it ever since. She also played first base and third base when she wasn’t pitching earlier in her career, but pitching always was her favorite.

Pitching won’t get any easier at the next level when she continues her career at UIC, where she intends to study criminal justice in hopes of becoming a lawyer. But if there is one other constant for Heflin, it’s that she won’t shy away from a challenge.

“I always loved pitching because it’s such a challenge,” she said. “I like doing something not a lot of other players could do, something that’s hard to do.”

For opposing pitchers, there was probably no scarier sight than seeing Abello step into the batter’s box.

The East Suburban Catholic all-conference selection led the Redwings in average (.550) and home runs (12), tied for team-high honors with 51 RBIs and scored 21 runs, all in 25 games.

Batting in the heart of the order, Andree consistently produced all season and led South’s regulars in hits (53), doubles (13), home runs (six), RBIs (34) and batting average (.449). The West Suburban Gold all-conference shortstop also committed just nine errors in 215 innings and was team coMVP in spring.

A key cog in the Mustangs’ offensive machine, Daly batted .407 overall this spring but picked it up with runners in scoring position, hitting .478 in those situations.

She finished with 30 RBIs, a team-high 38 runs scored and five home runs and committed only two errors this season. She was named West Suburban Gold all-conference and team co-MVP.

Caroline Hedgcock School: Downers Grove South Year: Freshman Up with the varsity from the first game of the season, Hedgcock hardly performed like a freshman. The West Suburban Gold all-conference player was among the team leaders offensively with a .368 average, 25 RBIs and three home runs, and she assumed the role of No. 1 pitcher, throwing 154.1 innings and finishing with a 15-8 record.

This senior seemingly did it all for the Indians this spring. The ace of the pitching staff, Jaworski finished with a record of 12-6 with two saves and posted an ERA of 1.50 in 126 innings of work. Offensively, as the team’s No. 3 hitter, Jaworski batted .425 with 11 doubles, four triples, three home runs and 35 RBIs.

Coming off an outstanding freshman campaign, Jay outdid herself this spring. A talented shortstop with a cannon arm, this sophomore made life miserable for opposing pitchers.

She batted .584 on the season with 13 doubles, 10 home runs, 43 runs scored and 51 RBIs.

The UIC-bound Heflin was one of the most dominant pitchers in the state, and her stats bear that out.

The West Suburban Silver all-conference pick finished the season with a 17-5 record with a 0.96 ERA while allowing just 30 walks and striking out 267 batters in 146 innings.

She also threw two perfect games, three no-hitters and 10 shutouts.

While the Hornets may have ups and downs this season, Kuchta sure didn’t.

Playing in every game this spring, the West Suburban Gold all-conference selection led South in almost every offensive category, including batting average (.441), runs scored (28), RBIs (26), doubles (10) and home runs (five) as the team captured a regional title.

The Raiders’ ace pitcher kept her ERA under two for most of the season until a tough playoff game pushed it to 2.05. But the SouthWest Suburban Blue all-conference selection led Bolingbrook to the regional championship game for the first time in years by striking out a school-record 172 in 147 innings.

Skala produced whopping numbers at the plate for the Sentinels, where she batted .430 with a team-leading 24 RBIs and three home runs. But that was just the tip of the iceberg.

The Interstate Eight all-conference player also was Westmont’s top pitcher and finished the year 11-9 with a 1.96 ERA and 178 strikeouts in 128 innings pitched.

A two-way threat for the Lions, Stitt was among the offensive leaders with a .429 batting average, .675 slugging percentage, 15 RBIs and 15 walks. As the ace pitcher, she fanned 124 and walked 49 in 131 innings. Stitt was team co-MVP, an Interstate Eight all-conference player and all-academic in the I-8.

McGuire’s torrid production throughout her high school career continued this season. The University of Georgia-bound East Suburban Catholic all-conference selection finished the season with a .516 batting average, tied for the team lead with 51 RBIs and topped the Redwings with 26 walks and a .625 on-base percentage.

The primary tasks for a leadoff hitter are to get on base and score runs.

Nojiri excelled at both this spring, finishing the year with a team-high .519 batting average and with 33 runs scored.

The West Suburban Silver all-conference player also had 15 extra-base hits with nine doubles, three triples, and three home runs.

What could be new about something that has been around for more than 4,000 years?

When it comes to tile, a lot.

During Coverings 2013, the largest tile-and-stone trade expo in the country, the buzz was about baking technology, science and great design into modern ceramic tile.

Held in Atlanta’s Georgia World Congress Center last month, the expo featured 900 exhibitors from more than 50 countries.

“Technology has been one of the tile industry’s inspirations,” said Ryan Fasan, tile-and-stone consultant for Tiles of Spain.

Innovations over the past several years have included superthin, extremely light tile that can be applied to cabinets or counters, very thick and anti-slip tile that can be used on uneven outdoor surfaces, and tile that can resist wide temperature fluctuations. Antibacterial tile is a smart option for bathrooms, hospitals, schools or any public place. Some tile even cleans the air and itself.

Del Conca and Cisa Ceramiche are just two companies that have re-created the look of petrified wood on tile. Del Conca, an Italian manufacturer, is building a

plant in Tennessee to produce porcelain stoneware tile. Del Conca Fast is a high-tech tile installed without joints, adhesives or grout. It’s basically a floating ceramic floor.

Creating surfaces Fiandre’s large-format, manmade Precious Stone collection uses the best of inkjet printing to create porcelain wall panels that are as artistic as they are architectural. And Emil Ceramica introduced Stone Box. Each box has 36 tiles representing different stones such as marble, granite, onyx, etc., but the color palette is the same.

“We are seeing large tiles trending in both matte and polished finishes,” said David Lang, vice president of Emil America.
