HUNTLEY – With the design complete and all rights of way acquired, Huntley officials now are simply waiting to know the exact date construction crews will start the $4.17 million Kreutzer Road extension project.

The Illinois Department of Transportation has informed village officials that construction will start sometime in June but have yet to meet with Huntley for a pre-con-

struction meeting to discuss the details, Assistant Village Manager Lisa Armour said.

The state agency is overseeing the project, since $1.5 million of the construction costs are being covered by federal funds from the McHenry County Council of Mayors.

Huntley will cover the rest of the project, which has long been on the village’s radar.

“It’s been quite awhile that it has been planned, designed and worked on,” Armour said.

“Our residents are anxious to get road projects completed

and be done with road construction.”

An Illinois transportation spokesman said the Kreutzer construction is tentatively scheduled to start in late June or early July. The state selected Plote Construction Inc., based in Hoffman Estates, to do the project in late April.

The project is expected to last a year, ending June 2014.

Kreutzer Road would be extended a half mile west from Route 47, near the Regency Square strip mall, to Main Street, near the Lion’s Chase

subdivision. Officials hope the extension will ease local traffic off Route 47 and provide better access to Huntley’s west side.

Once construction begins, crews will upgrade intersections, install lights and extend Kreutzer Road near the area of Route 47.

Motorists can expect some traffic delays during that initial phase of construction, which should be completed by late November, Armour said.

Crews will then work to extend Kreutzer Road north, near the area of Lion’s Chase and have it connect completely from Main Street to Route 47.

Representatives from Houseal Lavigne Associates plan to present the Village Board in the coming months with a preliminary streetscape plan that would incorporate many ideas included in the village’s 2010 revitalization plan.

In the meantime, the consulting firm has distributed a visual survey to trustees that would gauge their reaction to certain design elements, such as sidewalks, trees and streetscape themes. Representatives from the firm met with the board Thursday.

“We keep pushing the ball forward, and everything we will be doing is continuing this incremental project that is moving you forward to a final downtown plan,” said Devin Lavigne, co-founder of Houseal Lavigne.

Earlier this year, the board created a special taxing district meant to pour millions into the village’s downtown revitalization effort. Officials also have been acquiring numerous downtown buildings with historical roots for its makeover.

HUNTLEY – Officials here see Southeast Asia as a key part of Huntley’s next phase of development.

The town’s Huntley First program aims to put the town “at the center of Chicago business.” Glossy brochures, printed in both English and Japanese, tout full-interchange access, the area’s transportation network, and lower labor costs and taxes.

The once-booming suburban village has turned its focus from residential growth to encouraging companies, from Japan, South Korea and elsewhere, to relocate to Huntley.

As local towns scramble to attract new businesses, Huntley’s campaign to lure foreign investment from companies thousands of miles away may seem like a long shot.

But experts say communities are adopting more specific economic development strategies as competition for businesses – and jobs – intensifies.

“You just can’t go out and look for businesses ... and hope they’ll come to your community. It doesn’t work that way anymore.”

“I see this all the time,” said Jeff Finkle, president and CEO of the International Economic Development Council, the world’s largest economic development membership organization.

Huntley’s tailored approach to helps set it apart, said Victor Narusis, who handles business recruitment for the village.

“Business is very different than it was five years ago,” he said. “You just can’t go out and look for businesses, any business, and hope they’ll come to your community. It doesn’t work that way anymore.”

Those who voted knew what they were talking about. A 1995 graduate of the school, Vacco now lives in Berkeley, Calif., and will release her first novel, “My Chemical Mountain,” on Tuesday.

The young adult novel already has won the Delacorte Prize for a First Young Adult Novel, an honor bestowed by Random House, the world’s largest English language trade publisher. Vacco’s novel was chosen for the prize from among 640 submitted manuscripts, with 12 editors voting.

The prize came after years of submitting her novel, as well as revisions, to publishers.

“It took awhile to sink in when I got that phone call,” she said of the call she received from Random House announcing the win.

It came after she’d received numerous rejections, with agents telling her, “We don’t think we’ll be able to sell it.” Because of this, she encourages other writers not to give up.

“I’ve always wanted to be an author,” said Vacco, whose parents are Jennifer (Geres) Sullivan of Marengo and Jay Berman, who now lives in Woodstock. Her stepmother is Kathy Margason. Vacco went by the name Corina Berman while living in Marengo until age 18.

Growing up in Marengo, she said, she was inspired to write on cold, rainy days.

“I wrote my first novel when I was 7 in pencil with water color illustrations. It was dreadful, but I’ve always wanted to write. ... My grandma took me to the Marengo

Vacco wrote the first draft of “My Chemical Mountain” while living in western New York, where she researched a nearby town situated near one of the most dangerous landfills in the world.

The landfill contained chemical sludge from Love Canal, a now defunct neighborhood in Niagra Falls, N.Y. An elementary school was adjacent to the landfill.

As described by Vacco, the novel tells the story of a boy who breaks into the abandoned mills and factories that plague his run-down town after his father dies. While he and his two best friends rage against the noxious pollution that suffocates their town, they also embrace the danger

“They have lots of folklore to explain these weird things that go on in the landfill,” she said. Barrels containing toxic chemicals buried in a field provide the setting for robot wars. Green creek water is created by aliens.

With a strong theme of friendship and loyalty, the novel is being compared with “The Outsiders.”

Vacco, who moves often with her husband, who serves in the U.S. Coast Guard, said she was writing a fantasy novel when she stumbled upon the inspiration for “My Chemical Mountain.”

The family was headed to

Buffalo, N.Y., and Vacco was researching where to live.

Based on her research, she had ruled out anywhere near Love Canal but became intrigued by the town. When the family moved into downtown Buffalo, Vacco drove to a town meeting about 12 miles away in which a panel was fielding questions about the pollution.

Told not to eat vegetables from their gardens, those who spoke had mixed feelings about the situation, most of them unable to sell their homes. Some were employed by the chemical company and afraid to lose jobs.

“I was very interested in the idea of not having a cut and dry view toward the pol-

lution,” Vacco said. “There’s the attitude where ‘This is my home. I’ve been here all my life. I don’t want to leave.’ “ One boy particularly inspired Vacco when he spoke.

He and his friends had grown up playing in the landfill and were coming to realize how dangerous it had been.

She imagined a book written about the town from the perspective of these boys, not necessarily how Erin Brokovich would see it, as that’s already been done, she said.

“I couldn’t forget the energy of that boy and how he changed the room,” she said.

“He had given people passion, inspired people.”

The story unfolded from there, with Vacco writing an outline of the novel while sitting in her parked car, with her window cracked, across from the actual landfill. She worked on it for about four or five years before sending it in to publishers.

“It’s a story about finding your voice when the powersthat-be want to silence you,” Vacco said.

Athletic field renovations at Huntley near completion

By STEPHEN Di BENEDETTO sdibenedetto@shawmedia.com HUNTLEY – The District 158 board will intensify planning for the interior expansion of its ongoing renovation to Huntley High School, after members recently put the final touches on construction to the school’s athletic fields.

Construction crews already have started excavating the football field as they inch closer to installing a new synthetic turf along the field, which was the first priority in the district’s multimillion-dollar renovation to the 17-year-old high school.

They now will begin work on the soccer and baseball fields, after a shorthanded board unanimously approved in a special meeting late last week the final construction bid to the school’s athletic fields.

The majority of the $557,700 bid goes to Midwest Golf Development Inc. in a quirky move that had some board members wondering whether the Marengo golf company could handle work for other athletic fields.

“Obviously, we are not installing a golf course,” board President Don Drzal said.

“Is it pretty common for golf architects to do this type of work for non-golf courses?”

Architects from Wold Architects and Engineer, the company tasked with overseeing the design of the entire renovation project, assured the board that Midwest Golf Development has ample expertise with other athletic fields.

The Marengo company will do excavation and landscape work for the school’s soccer fields and football practice fields.

Other work included in

the bid involves the installation of fencing around the baseball field and an irrigation system for the baseball and soccer fields.

Doug Renkosik, the district’s director of operations and maintenance, also informed the board that construction on the fields is progressing nicely, barring some unforeseen, but minor, change orders that will be covered by the exterior project’s $3.64 million budget.

Officials have expected construction on the fields to conclude by the time school starts in August. In the meantime, the board will begin planning discussions on the high school’s interior that would reconfigure hallways and classroom space.

The renovation is needed to accommodate the 3,000 students who are expected to roam the halls by 2019, district officials have said.

Ashley Potts had been to nationals as a Level 9 gymnast, but that did little to prepare her for competing as a Level 10.

Potts, who trains at Huntley Unlimited Gymnastics, was coming back from an injury and had limited competition before the regional qualifying meet. She was unsure of her chances, and when she had some errors on some early routines at regionals, she thought the dream of nationals might be over.

“I didn’t think I was going to make it,” Potts said.

“I was really stressed out.”

Potts bounced back with a second-place performance on the balance beam (9.35).

She finished fifth in the allaround (36.1) in the Senior C Division at the Region 5 Championships on April 12 in Dimondale, Mich., to qualify for the Junior Olympic Nationals as part of the Region 5 Dream Team.

That’s when the magnitude of what she had accomplished started to kick in.

Potts was one of seven to qualify for the Dream Team that would compete at nationals, not only as individuals, but as a team against the other regions.

As part of the national team, she was outfitted with gear, clothing uniforms – two suitcases full.

“They gave us so much stuff and it just kept coming,” Potts said. “It was really overwhelming.”

At nationals on May 9 to 11 in Minneapolis, Potts was ninth on the balance beam (9.425) and was 28th in the all-around (36.825).

While the routines and competing in the individual events at nationals was familiar, being a part of a team was not.

“It was completely different because I was competing with a team,” Potts said.

The experience has left Potts, a senior this fall at Prairie Ridge, wanting more.

“I just want to go back next year,” Potts said. “I want to do it again because it was really fun.”

She knows that achieving that goal will come from hard work and she was anxious to get back to her own gym to resume training.

“It makes me want to do more,” Potts said.

Jerry Leonard bought Huntley Unlimited Gymnastics about 18 months ago and Potts is his first level 10 to qualify for nationals.

Leonard, who said HUGS recently added air conditioning to the gym to make summer workouts more comfortable, has the same goal for all his gymnasts.

“That’s my intention, to get these girls to a level where they can get a collegiate career,” Leonard said.

Egekeze chooses Belmont

By JEFF ARNOLD jarnold@shawmedia.com Amanze Egekeze could have waited, using the final month of his AAU season with the Illinois Wolves to show college basketball coaches what he is really capable of doing.

But in the days after Belmont University made the 6-foot-7 Huntley senior a scholarship offer last Sunday, the need to put his college choice off faded.

Egekeze verbally committed to join Belmont’s 2014 recruiting class on Thursday, allowing him to focus solely on his final year with the Red Raiders. Despite missing half his junior season while recovering from tendinitis surgery last September, Egekeze averaged 12.3 points, 5.3 rebounds and 1.9 blocks per game while helping Huntley to its third straight Fox Valley Conference title.

Egekeze also had offers from DePaul, Loyola, Indiana State, Toledo, Wright State and the University of California-Davis. He had also drawn interest from several Big Ten schools including Michigan, Wisconsin, Purdue, Iowa, Northwestern and Illinois.

Egekeze, who is the first Division I basketball player to come out of coach Marty Manning’s Huntley program, said he struggled with making a decision so early for a couple days this week.

But after weighing his options, he wondered what he was waiting for and decided on Rick Byrd’s Bruins program that went 26-7 last season, finished 14-2 in the Ohio Valley Conference and that has made three straight NCAA Tourna-

ment appearances and reached the tournament six times since 2006.

Manning said Thursday night that coaches he spoke with like Egekeze’s versatility as well as his potential to grow as a player, building off his natural abilities. They also liked his character.

Egekeze said having the ability to play right away also factored into his decision, choosing the smaller, Nashville-based school over a possible chance to play at the Big Ten level. He also appreciated the stability he found with the Bruins, a program that hasn’t had a player transfer out over the past 10 years.

“Out of all the offers I had, there was none that really compared to Belmont,” Egekeze said. “A lot of the schools were genuine, but at the same time, they weren’t as consistent as (Belmont) was and I didn’t want to take the risk of waiting for something or going to a big-name university and end up hating it there.

“Just knowing I picked a place where there was everything I’ve wanted in a school, it really takes a really huge load off and now I can really focus on the things I need to get better at and not worry about anything. So it’s a good situation to be in.”

The last 100 meters of Katie Adams’ high school running career were not particularly pretty.

The Marengo senior labored hard down the stretch at Eastern Illinois University’s O’Brien Stadium, her legs screaming and no finishing kick to be found.

It didn’t matter. Adams already had poured her angst and frustration into the race and left her competitors behind. When she crossed the finish line, she again was the Class 2A 1,600-meters champion at the girls track and field state meet and had run her fastest time ever (5:00.84).

Teammate Allie Sprague was second in 5:07.19.

“It was the greatest feeling ever, knowing I had nothing left when I crossed the finish line,” Adams said. “There are no words to describe that incredible sense of pride and accomplishment I felt by leading that race from start to finish. I wouldn’t have wanted to end my high school career in any other way.”

For winning her second 1,600 state title, Adams is the Northwest Herald Girls Track and Field Athlete of the Year, chosen by the sports staff with input from area coaches.

There was no shortage of candidates this season as Huntley’s Omo Tesumah (Class 3A high jump) and Woodstock’s Maura Beattie (Class 2A 3,200) also won state titles, and Jacobs’ Lauren Van Vlierbergen finished fourth in the Class 3A 1,600 and anchored the Golden Eagles’ fifth-place 4x800 relay team.

Adams, who also was the Northwest Herald Girls Cross Country Runner of the Year, could not grab the distance double she coveted because Beattie, who lost to her three

times this spring, ran a strong tactical race to win the 3,200.

Beattie pushed the pace early in the race and grabbed an insurmountable lead.

“I figured if I ran my race I’d be where I wanted to be,” Adams said. “I have to give Maura a lot of credit, she had such a great race strategy against me. She took it out really fast and I couldn’t react to that pace because I wasn’t used to running that quicker pace for the first mile. She deserved that title, she really did. It wasn’t what I wanted.”

Adams looked distraught, but after receiving her 3,200 medal she went about refocusing mentally on her final high school race. Scott and Lori Adams told their daughter to leave that race behind and to go run the 1,600 for herself. By the time the 1,600 started, Adams was ready.

“I didn’t really say much to her because she was pretty bummed,” Marengo coach Brian Tveter said. “She knew what she needed to do. She came out and ran great in the 1,600.”

Adams channeled the negativity from the third-place finish in the 3,200 to her advantage.

“During that entire (1,600) race, I ran aggressive and ran like I was mad,” Adams said.

“I took control of that race and got everything out. I wanted to take it from the gun and leave everyone behind and prove that I could do it.”

Adams, who will run at Iowa next year, leaves her high school with an impressive legacy of nine state medals (six in track, three in cross country).

Marengo’s girls cross country team was fifth in Class 2A last fall, its best finish ever.

“Some of the stuff she’s done is crazy,” Tveter said. “I don’t know if we’ll see people break these records for a long time.”
