Bleak future for ash trees Thousands of trees have been removed from the region

By ERIC SCHELKOPF eschelkopf@shawmedia.com The impact that the emerald ash borer has had on this area’s ash tree population is evident by the thousands of trees that have had to be chopped down over the past few years.

And while area communities have been successful in identifing ash trees infested with the emerald ash borer, the future of ash trees in the region is bleak.

“There is no way to control it through eradication,” said Kris Bachtell, vice president of collections and facilities for Lisle-based Morton Arboretum. “It’s way out of the box from that. If they are not treated, they will be dead within probably a five-year period.”

About 12.7 million ash trees in the seven-county Chicago region are or will be affected by the insects, according to the Morton Arboretum.

The emerald ash borer is a destructive, non-native pest that feasts on ash trees. The first case in Illinois was found in June 2008 within The Windings subdivision in Campton Township.

The infestation happens when emerald ash larvae bores through the bark and into the area where nutrient levels are high.

As a result, the tree no longer is able to transport water and nutrients to where it is needed.

The city of St. Charles this year again is participating in a project that provides parkway ash trees with five years of protection from the emerald ash borer. Currently, about 78 parkway ash trees are receiving five years of protection.

St. Charles has been participating in the project since 2010 and is one of only a dozen communities in the United States selected for the partnership project sponsored by Valent Professional Products.

Source: www.mortonarb.org tive ingredient used in flea control products for pets, is applied by soil injection at the base of each tree. Peter Suhr, the city’s assistant director of public works, said the city has been proactive in managing the emerald ash borer infestation.

To date, about 2,000 affected parkway ash trees have been cut down in St. Charles, and proactive treatment has been applied to about 200 trees, Suhr said.

Since 2008, the city of Geneva has removed 2,200 of its 2,700 parkway ash trees because of the emerald ash borer.

“We are well on our way,” Geneva streets and fleets Superintendent Chris Bong said. “The City Council had declared the ash tree to be a nuisance tree, which allowed the city to remove them as necessary.”

Bong said the trees that are infested become weak and

have to be removed.

“They are a liability and they are an eyesore,” he said.

“They could fall. They could fall on a home or person or car.”

Bong said Geneva carefully monitors the condition of its ash trees.

“We look at the leaves,” Bong said. “If 50 percent of the tree canopy is gone or dead, we put it on the list to be removed.”

Batavia removed more than 500 parkway ash trees last year that were infested with the emerald ash borer.

“I think we have made a huge dent,” Batavia streets Superintendent Scott Haines said. “The majority of the large trees that are infested have been removed over the last few years.”

Batavia has not planted ash trees since fall 2003 be-

cause of the initial infestation reported in Michigan. The city has a 50/50 parkway tree program that allows residents to share in the cost of planting and replacing parkway trees.

Seventy-five to 125 trees are planted every year through the program.

As a result of the Dutch elm disease, the city implemented a parkway tree planting program to diversify tree species to prevent it from happening again. The city of Geneva ceased the planting of parkway ash trees in 2002.

Suhr said St. Charles homeowners can help the process if they have ash trees on their property.

He advised them to work with a certified arborist to develop a plan of action for protecting their trees with treatment and removing those that cannot be treated.

SUGAR GROVE – A kitten that was rescued after traveling about 300 miles while clinging to a semitrailer’s air cleaner is up for adoption

by Kane County Animal Control, officials said.

Kevin Forest, the Sugar Grove police officer who found the kitten, had stopped the driver of a truck near Route 47 and Chelsea Avenue in Sugar Grove around 5:30 p.m. May 25.

The driver was talking on a cellphone while driving a commercial vehicle through a construction zone, and Forest said while making contact with the driver, he heard a cat meow over the sound of the engine.

The driver said he did not have a cat on board, but said he had heard the noise for about two hours and didn’t think anything of it, Forest said.

The driver of the truck had traveled 284 miles from Tomah, Wis., before reaching Sugar Grove. Forest said he asked the driver to shut down the engine so he could investigate.

When he looked under the hood, Forest found a small kitten clinging with all four paws to the truck’s air cleaner. “[She] was holding on with everything [she] had,” Forest said.

Robert Sauceda, billing manager for Kane County Animal Control, said the black tiger-striped kitten has been named EB – short for Engine Block – and is about 14 to 16 weeks old.

Aside from a case of ear mites that has now cleared up, EB is in good health and didn’t seem to suffer any hearing loss from being so close to the engine.

Forest said the kitten was so small that she climbed underneath the driver’s seat of his squad car.

And then the officer saw the items suddenly were missing, the report states, and he asked White where he put them.

Another officer arrived and got a call from the Geneva Police Department’s front desk, telling police to check White’s right shoe.

Inside the right shoe, police found a hypodermic syringe, a metal spoon and two cotton swabs.

And inside White’s right sock, police found two tinfoil

packets believed to be heroin, according to the report.

According to Kane County court records, White has another felony charge pending.

He was charged April 26 in Aurora with possession of ecstasy pills.

White had posted $5,000 bond, 10 percent of a $50,000 bail that was set, in connection with those charges.

According to court records, White is to appear in court Thursday on the previous charges.

Geneva to refinance loans, save $200K GENEVA – Geneva aldermen this week recommended approval of $4 million in refunding bonds, saving taxpayers nearly $200,000 in interest over the life of the loans.

Geneva Finance Manager Thomas Dahl said refunding or calling the current bonds involves issuing new debt to cover the principal and interest owed.

Kevin McCanna of Speer Financial said the bond market is changing, and this would be a good time to try to do refunding.

“The market is changing.

It goes up and down, but right now, it’s OK,” McCanna said. “It’s better than last year.”

McCanna recommended refunding the city’s Series 2003 Electric Revenue Bonds for nearly $2 million and Series 2007 General Obligation Alternate Revenue Bonds

for $2.1 million, also for the electric division.

The city’s savings, officials said, would be 5.5 percent, above the savings target of 3 percent.

The refunding does not involve adding any additional new debt, and does not add more on to do other projects or extend the payoff dates, Dahl said in an email.

But the refinancing will cost the city about $40,000 to do the refunding process for

both bond series, Dahl said.

The refunding cost could be lower, but officials will not know until later in the summer.

The city council is expected to take final action at the June 17 meeting, but McCanna said officials will have to publish a notice and hold a bond hearing July 22, so the bond sale will not occur until Aug. 5 and not close until Aug. 19, according to a schedule.

Barker said installing the flagpole was the first phase of the park project, and several other projects are planned, including the installation of engraved brick pavers.

SUGAR GROVE – A new 30-foot flagpole has been installed at the developing Sugar Grove Veterans Park, just in time to celebrate Flag Day on Friday.

Members of the Sugar Grove Veterans Park Foundation are planning to raise the park’s first American flag in the park at 8 a.m. to celebrate the Stars and Stripes.

The Sugar Grove American Legion also plans to host a flag disposal ceremony starting at 6 p.m. Friday at the park, which is in the 200 block of Main Street in Sugar Grove.

Cliff Barker, president of the Veterans Park Board of Directors, said the park’s flagpole was installed last weekend, but members are waiting until Friday to fly the first flag.

The development of Veterans Park has been in the works for about two years, he said.

“What started off as a little project snowballed into a not-for-profit and a budget and board of directors,” Barker said. “The public support for it has just been humbling beyond belief.”

He also assured County Board members that he has not yet decided who he will hire, despite rumors to the contrary.

“I have no horse in this race,” Lauzen said.

The measure passed, 23-1, with County Board member Mark Davoust, R-St. Charles, voting no.

Lauzen said the coordinators will submit a report to the County Board in six months, at which time, the County Board will decide if the project is worth funding permanently.

Democrats on the board, however, saw the issue differently, saying they believed the provision improves job opportunities for local workers, and produces better quality work while preventing contractors from outside the area from submitting artificially low estimates.

“I think this just levels the playing field,” said board member Cristina Castro, D-Elgin.

GENEVA – Kane County’s government soon will launch a push to increase the size of the county’s social media network and improve the county’s image among the people who live and work in it.

The Kane County Board on Tuesday authorized Kane County Board Chairman Chris Lauzen to spend as much as $50,000 to pay as many as two contracted employees over the next 6 months to craft a “community outreach” plan.

Lauzen said details of the plan will be worked out in coming weeks, after he hires people to fill the positions of “community outreach coordinators.”

But he said he believes the project should center on social media, through established media, including Facebook and the county’s website.

GENEVA – Kane County has eliminated a provision in its rules requiring contractors bidding on road construction and other county-funded projects to participate in federal government-approved apprenticeship and training programs.

The action comes even as state lawmakers consider enacting a law that would require such participation among public works contractors throughout Illinois.

The Kane County Board voted, 13-11, on Tuesday, largely along party lines, to eliminate the provision from the county’s prevailing wage ordinance.

That legal rule governs how much public works contractors are required to pay certain classifications of workers employed by the contractors when building

roads and bridges, removing trees or performing other public works-related projects.

For years, the county’s prevailing wage ordinance has included a requirement that county contractors participate in apprenticeship and training programs sanctioned by the U.S. Department of Labor.

However, such programs typically are run by labor unions.

Most Republican members of the Kane County Board said they believed this provision effectively worked to limit the pool of potential bidders for county projects to unionized contractors.

And that, they said, will cost taxpayers money.

“The bottom line is unions want a monopoly on government-contracted work, and they want us to help them create that monopoly,” said County Board member Drew Frasz, R-El-

Deficit delusion: We still need a grand bargain THE WASHINGTON POST When the Great Recession hit in December 2007, the United States’ publicly held debt amounted to less than 40 percent of gross domestic product – well within the normal range since World War II, when the figure temporarily, and necessarily, soared above 100 percent. Consequently, the federal government was well-positioned to fight the plunging growth rate by spending more and taxing less; it had ample “fiscal space.”

If a similar emergency – war, recession or some combination – struck now or in the next decade, the United States would begin its response burdened with a debt-to-GDP ratio above 70

percent, roughly twice the postwar average, according to the most recent Congressional Budget Office projections. “Fiscal space” would be correspondingly narrower.

We do not suggest that such a situation is likely or that the U.S. economy would collapse if it occurred. Nor do the debt projections prove that the Obama administration’s fiscal response to the Great Recession was too large; much of it, in fact, consisted of long-established “automatic stabilizers,” such as unemployment benefits that rise (as they should) during a downturn. Our purpose is simply to take note of one reason, among many, that it is far too soon to declare victory over the nation’s budget problems.

Yet that is pretty much what a growing chorus of policy experts close to the Democratic Party are urging President Obama and Congress to do. “We have already made enormous progress toward debt reduction, and the long-term problems are not nearly as dangerous as previously thought,” says a new report from the liberal Center for American Progress. “No more calls for an ever-elusive grand bargain.”

It’s true that tax increases and spending cuts to date, coupled with an unexpected slowing of healthcare costs, have caused the CBO to reduce its 2020 deficit forecast by nearly half. But these lower forecasts result in large part from an ill-advised set of across-the-board spending

cuts that should be at least partially reversed, lest they eviscerate discretionary nondefense and defense spending. Here’s what has not been accomplished: structural change to the out-of-whack tax code or to the entitlement programs – Medicare especially – that drive the long-term deficit.

Worrying about those unsolved problems does not constitute a call for growth-killing “austerity.”

To the contrary – deficits and debt pose a risk not only to the country’s economic future but also to policy goals that progressives cherish. It is not equitable to continue transferring net resources from young to old, especially when so many of the latter are well-off compared with

many of the former. Without entitlement reform, the squeeze on the discretionary budget, and all the important public purposes that budget serves (from research to education to nutrition), cannot realistically be relieved. And then there is the problem of what might happen if economic and political conditions do not remain as benign as CBO forecasts necessarily assume.

Moderating healthcare costs and other pleasant fiscal surprises should be cues to redouble efforts at a longterm fiscal fix, not to relax.

After all, if the debt problem has become smaller, it follows that the solution has become less painful. And the best time to start negotiating it is still now.

“I always knew since I was little that I wanted to be a teacher, but I didn’t know that I wanted to be a principal until I started to take on some more responsibilities,” Hichens said. “It’s almost like you need that sneak peek to know if you can handle it.”

Since November, Hichens said she has been transitioning toward the superintendent’s position.

“I’m extremely grateful for the opportunity,” she said.

“I’m going to try my best. I’m going to keep learning.”

Batavia Enterprises property manager Kristen Johnson said Hichens came across as approachable.

“She was like the person next door,” Johnson said.

“You could see the teacher in her in the way she recapped information.”

ST. CHARLES – The St. Charles school board made no mention of its relationship with the city when it officially agreed Tuesday night to pay for a right-turn lane on Red Gate Road at the entrance of St. Charles North High School.

The $125,000 item was included on the board’s consent agenda, which was unanimously approved without discussion.

The school board agreed to fund the turn lane – also called a deceleration lane – after refusing to share $500,000 in construction costs for intersection improvements with the city of St. Charles.

Some members said the improvements were the city’s responsibility and the city made the mistake of not installing a traffic light when it built Red Gate Bridge, which opened in December.

Several aldermen last week expressed concerns about the school board’s rejection of the original proposed agreement between the two entities. Some indicated it could affect the way the city deals with the school district in the future.

Aldermen, however, recommended approval of the revised agreement. Under the terms, the city will cover about $445,000 of the total $570,000 bill, which includes professional fees and the cost

Mediacom boosts Village officials to change HDTV offerings meeting schedule in July Transition clears bandwidth for speed

Late last week, Mediacom boosted its HDTV lineup significantly, adding 51 new HD channels to its roster.

The list of new HD channels includes MTV, ABC Family, Hallmark Channel, WE, CMT, the NFL Network, Fox Business Channel, ESPN News, ESPN U, CBS Sports, BBC America, National Geographic, Discovery Science, History International, Disney XD, NFL Red Zone, and 20 premium channels, including HBO, Cinemax and Starz.

The new channel offerings were introduced last week to customers in local communities including Elburn, Kaneville, Maple Park and Sugar Grove, as well as customers in northwestern Kane County, DeKalb County and other counties to the south and west.

Mediacom spokeswoman Phyllis Peters said the addition of the new HD channels has allowed Mediacom to all but eliminate older analog signals from its bandwidth.

“All channels 22 and higher are all digital now,” Peters said.

Analog broadcasts will continue to be transmitted on Mediacom lines for local TV stations, Peters said.

To accommodate customers with televisions incapable of decoding HD signals, Mediacom has distributed digital adapters to its customers to ensure all customers still can watch their programming of choice.

Peters said the transition to all digital signals on most channels will free bandwidth to allow Mediacom to further increase broadband Internet speeds in coming months.

“We now have the capacity to do so much more,” she said.

She said no dates have been set for those improvements.

But she said Mediacom is estimating it soon could double its broadband speeds.

Board meetings are to start at 6:45 p.m., and they will be scheduled for the first and third Mondays of each month. Committee of the Whole meetings are to start immediately after the board meeting adjourns.

Board members discussed the change at Monday’s Committee of the Whole meeting, and they are expected to vote at next week’s Village Board meeting. It would be a change from the current format, in which Commit-

tee of the Whole meetings take place on the second and fourth Mondays of each month. Board meetings currently start at 7 p.m.

It was among the topics trustees tackled at Monday’s meeting. Among the others: • Village leaders followed up on discussion about safety awareness, weeks after the death of 13-year-old Caitlyn Phillips. Phillips, an Elburn resident, who died after colliding with a car while inline skating in April. Resident Ron Rosecky recently addressed the board, asking officials to address safety. He lives near where the incident took place and thought highly of Caitlyn.

Board members agreed promoting awareness was the key, and Gualdoni said a safety day is in the works at Lions Park.

The descriptions changed when the village created the finance director position.

Such duties previously were handled by the village administrator.

Sugar Grove to survey residents

North Aurora plans electric company switch KANE COUNTY CHRONICLE editorial@kcchronicle.com NORTH AURORA – The village of North Aurora has decided to terminate its agreement with Integrys Energy Services Inc. for electric supply to residents and small commercial businesses and revert back to the default ComEd rates.

There will be no change or interruption in the delivery of service, only a change in the electricity supply charges on the ComEd bills for usage beginning with the meter read date after July 1, according to a news release from the village.

The village decided to make the change after the ComEd rate decreased to 5.511 cents per kilowatt hours this month and the Integrys rate provided to residents of North Aurora increased from 5.75 cents per kilowatt hours to 5.952 cents per kilowatt hours this

month.

Residents and small commercial businesses who are part of the village’s electric aggregation currently being served by Integrys Energy Services, Inc. will receive a letter in the mail from Integrys notifying them of the change and the option to remain with Integrys if they choose through the end of the agreement in October.

ComEd will be sending a notice as well.

The village has begun the process of soliciting bids for a new electricity supplier.

In the meantime, residential supply will be served by ComEd for the next couple of months.

“Any decision regarding a switch to a new supplier will be based on the most timely and accurate information available at the time, in the best interests of our North Aurora residents,” Village President Dale Berman said in the release.

SUGAR GROVE – Village officials want to know how residents feel about the quality of life in Sugar Grove.

Trustees recently voted to give the National Research Center $13,800 to survey 2,000 households.

The firm is the same one that surveyed 1,200 households in 2007.

“We can find out about what we’re doing right and what we need to work on,” Sugar Grove Village President Sean Michels said. “We should get a fairly good idea of what the residents are looking for.”

Residents will be asked such questions as how they feel about the services provided by the police department, water quality, opportunities

for employment and cultural offerings.

“It’s been six years since we’ve had a survey,” Michels said. “The village does want to hear from its residents.”

The results from this year’s survey will be compared with the 2007 survey to provide a “benchmark to see if we are improving and meeting residents’ needs,” Michels said.

Plans are to mail the survey to residents at the end of July or in early August. Those selected to fill out the survey will first be mailed a postcard, and they will be given a code to take the survey online if they want.

The village had a 48 percent rate of return in the last survey.

“We had a very good participation in the last one,” Michels said. “We hope to get the same level of participation.”

Virtual charter group withdraws plan

By STEPHEN DiBENEDETTO sdibenedetto@shawmedia.com CHICAGO – A nonprofit organization trying to start a virtual charter school in the Fox Valley withdrew its proposal before a state commission had the chance Tuesday to decide whether to deny the group’s appeal.

Virtual Learning Solutions indicated in a letter sent to the Illinois State Charter School Commission early Monday evening that the nonprofit was giving up its appeal because of a newly enacted moratorium that prohibits the creation of any new virtual charter school until April.

The withdrawal ends Virtual Learning’s effort to bring an online-only charter school to the Fox Valley spanning 18 districts, including Batavia

School District 101, St. Charles School District 303, Geneva School District 304 and Kaneland School District 302.

“Virtual Learning Solutions has determined that the legislation makes it impossible for Virtual Learning Solutions to proceed with the appeals because, even if the appeals were granted, the moratorium precludes Virtual Learning Solutions from fulfilling its expressed intention ... to begin operations during the 2013-14 school year,” Ted Dabrowski, Virtual Learning’s president, said in the letter.

The commission voted 9-0 to accept Virtual Learning’s withdrawal during a regular board meeting in Chicago.

The commission was originally going to decide whether to deny the appeal, after the

commission’s staff had recommended to reject it because of the moratorium.

The withdrawal was the conclusion of a lengthy conflict between Virtual Learning and the 18 school districts.

It began in March, when the nonprofit initially presented its proposal.

All 18 districts rejected the virtual charter proposal, arguing that Virtual Learning did not address their individual concerns about the charter school’s operating costs, curriculum and structure.

Virtual Learning then sought to reverse all 18 district denials through the state charter commission, which was planning to hear the appeal until Gov. Pat Quinn signed the moratorium into law May 24.

D-Aurora, introduced the moratorium legislation that targeted virtual charter schools after Virtual Learning started meeting with school districts.

It requires the commission to study the issue of virtual charter schools and present a report to lawmakers by March 2014.

Former Virtual Learning President Sharnell Jackson also resigned from the nonprofit after Quinn signed the legislation. Dabrowski, Virtual Learning’s secretary, has since filled Jackson’s role.

Virtual Learning’s retraction means a victory for the school districts, which were preparing all spring for a lengthy appeals process, said attorney Brian Crowley.

By BRENDA SCHORY bschory@shawmedia.com SUGAR GROVE – With new officers in place on the Sugar Grove Library Board, the hope is to turn a new page in the library’s direction.

New officers recently chosen on the board were Dan Herkes as president, Anthony Oliver as vice president, Louise Coffman as treasurer and Edward DeBartolo as secretary.

“I am very happy the other board members had confidence in me to appoint me as president,” Herkes said. “I had a lot of fun and put a lot of time in the treasurer’s position, but now we have a qualified accountant as library treasurer.

I think she’ll find it in better shape financially than two years ago.”

Herkes said the board is enthusiastic about the direction the library is taking.

“Our circulation is up more than 25 percent,” said Herkes, noting the library was buying books again.

The library also was able to increase its hours by moving other expenses around, he said.

“We are on the right trajec-

tory right now,” Herkes said.

Oliver said the board’s new officers and its new direction are going to be good for the community.

“As you know we’ve got some new [board] members.

I believe we have a majority of people who are like-thinking,” Oliver said. “We’re more in tune with the community, I believe. … We certainly want to make sure our patrons and taxpayers are well-served, and we have a board that is really going to do that.”

The library experienced a tumultuous time when the board fired Beverly Holmes Hughes, its longtime director, in July 2011, followed by months of turmoil and public protest, including the disbanding of its Friends of the Library volunteer group.

Oliver said he hoped to turn that around as well.

“I believe that things like the Friends of the Library are going to start up again,” Oliver said. “We’re hoping to get the Friends back on board.

I do believe that is going to happen. That is my hope and something I’m going to work on.”

Pat Graceffa, who used to run the Friends, said it was

“I think that some of the Friends are ready to try to bring our group back, but we will need a lot of new members, too,” Graceffa said in an email response to a question. “The Friends would love to work with the new officers and our new library director as soon as we have a chance to sit down and talk and see what exactly they would like us to do.”

Graceffa ran a failed writein campaign for the library board in the recent April election.

Oliver praised the new library director, Carol Dolin, saying she “is excellent. She’s great. I have every confidence

in her. She’s doing a great job of outreaching.”

Oliver said he also hoped to get a rate increase passed to give the new library building the financial support it needs.

In 2010, voters defeated a 10th request by the board to increase the library’s operating rate.

“I’m hoping we’re turning a new chapter, and the community can see we want to support them and convince them of a need for more money for operating funds,” Oliver said.

“Patrons are coming in.

They enjoy what we’re offering, but unfortunately, it needs money to keep it going.

We’ve got a wonderful library there, and we need to keep it open. We will be good stewards, but we need to dig a little deeper in our pockets. We are not talking [about] a huge amount.”

Oliver said a reason voters have not approved a rate increase could be because the message has not been getting out or the public does not trust the board with additional tax money.

“Hopefully, we can change that mindset, I pray,” Oliver said. “We need to get more books.”

“We are pleased,” Crowley said after the commission’s vote.

“The appeals were going to incur a ton of legal fees and a ton of school district time.

There were going to be interviews, hearings for a matter that frankly the public didn’t seem to support.”

During the meeting, the charter commission also detailed the timeline for its virtual charter report to the Illinois Legislature.

The commission will spend $10,000 in the coming year to gather research, conduct meetings and produce the study, which should be distributed

by March 1.

St. Charles North junior keeps North Stars atop league

By KEVIN DRULEY kdruley@shawmedia.com Sabrina Rabin wins plenty of plaudits for her stone-faced focus as St. Charles North’s fleet leadoff hitter and pitching ace.

Her path to softball stardom began with a different kind of approach.

Before Rabin emerged as a standout talent, before she was named the Kane County Chronicle’s 2013 Softball Player of the Year, she had to drop in on North Stars coach Tom Poulin to tell him something.

Rabin was ready to be the next leader of a program about to graduate several of them.

Poulin remembers the exchange fondly: Rabin, then a freshman, was gathering her things in the dugout after North’s nail-biting loss to Moline in the 4A state cham-

pionship game in 2011. An impressive cast of college-bound seniors – including shutdown right-hander Amanda Ciran – had played its final game together, and while Rabin wasn’t looking past the invaluable tutelage that group had shared, she still couldn’t help thinking ahead about her potential.

“She wasn’t saying it egotistically,” Poulin said.

“She’d never do something like that. She was just telling me what her goals were, and I had no doubt she would work to achieve those goals.”

Rabin batted a team-best .534 and stole 35 bases in 37 attempts as a junior, igniting an attack that helped the Upstate Eight Conference River Division champion North Stars win a league title for the fifth straight spring. That included winning both meetings against eventual 4A state

runners-up St. Charles East.

The program could see Rabin’s offensive and fielding prowess coming. Although Rabin pitched in a handful of games as a freshman, she made more of an impression as a budding center fielder, a role for which Northwestern already has successfully recruited her.

Her stats from the circle complete the impressive ensemble. Rabin finished 18-4 with a 1.49 ERA while completing 18 of her starts and firing six shutouts.

“I like pitching also. I like kind of being a leader out there and taking control,” Rabin said. “So that’s something that I was open to.”

Jill Waldron, Rabin’s Batavia-based personal pitching coach, has worked with Rabin since Rabin was 9. Sessions early in the offseason

focus on speed and spinning the ball. The focus shifts to hitting spots and perfecting movement pitches as the high school season gets closer.

Waldron naturally does not sell short the time Rabin devotes to their sessions, nor her involvement – she often brings younger brother Erik, a North sophomore-to-be, as her catcher.

Still, it’s the things that happen away from their time together that awe Waldron most. Rabin keeps a regular regimen with personal and strength trainers. Entering the spring, she competed with the North indoor girls track team and turned in a runner-up finish in the 55-meter dash (7.44 seconds) and a fourth-place run in the 200 (26.66) at the UEC indoor meet.

an upbeat but businesslike demeanor.

“We’re definitely a fun team,” Saints junior Sarah Collalti said. “Just super excited all the time and always pulling for one another.”

East will graduate its three captains, with catcher Shelby Holtz joining right fielder Lorenzini and shortstop Perez.

With a school board salute set for Tuesday (in tandem with East’s third-place 4A baseball team) and the year-end banquet

on tap for later this month, the Saints aren’t liable to forget that senior trio.

Then again, they’ve also greeted summer ball – traditionally held on the weekend after the state tournament – with glee.

“We’re still celebrating 2013, there’s no doubt,” Horan said, “... but the kids I have coming back understand that we’ve got some holes to fill and we want to get better, and that’s fantastic.”

St. Charles East won 33 games this past softball season, the most successful in program history to date.

Incidentally, the Saints had a little more than 33 hours to salute their efforts before summer camp opened Monday morning. Advancing to the 4A state championship game created a welcome time crunch.

“For the first time in memory, I actually had the returning kids run up to camp, like, ‘Oh my God!’ Just loud and boisterous,” East coach Kelly Horan said. “That was pretty awesome, I’m not going to lie to you.”

Horan, the Kane County Chronicle Softball Coach of the Year, sticks with the same adjective when addressing a season that saw the Saints jump from 20 victories – including zero in the postseason – in 2012.

The key for the 33-6 Saints was what Horan called a teamwide investment into an old-

school, “full-speed all of the time” system. It extended from longtime contributors and senior standouts Olivia Lorenzini and Lexi Perez to freshman starting left fielder Katie Kolb.

“My approach hasn’t really changed in five years here,” Horan said. “It’s just that these kids kind of knew what to expect. So I appreciate the trust they had in me to say, ‘OK, coach, we’re going to do it and do it your way.’ I’ve always Kelly Horan had kids do that before, but this is the first time I really had everyone buy into that system. I’ve got some awesome, awesome kids as ballplayers and I’m pretty lucky to be their coach.”

She also dedicates herself 12 months out of the year, which is why she’s successful in everything she does as it pertains to softball.”

Rabin struck out 121 batters in 141 innings, embracing an increased workload after sharing time with senior Shannon Caliri in 2012. As a sophomore, Rabin had 10

victories and a 2.20 ERA, and was intent on bringing her spin and command up to speed with her velocity this offseason.

Now in her second travel season with the Illinois Chill, Rabin usually plays center field for 18U Gold, pitching about once a week. It’s just enough to keep her sharp and motivated on the heels of North’s season-ending, upset loss to South Elgin in a 4A regional final last month.

“I’ve always done it since I was young, so taking a little break from [pitching] doesn’t

Wherever Rabin winds up in Northwestern’s lineup – Waldron thinks the Wildcats wouldn’t be reaching to try her at pitcher – is not for her to say.

That’s one or two steps ahead, and Rabin dares not go there yet, despite what her baserunning skills might suggest.

The next goal is simple, and partially familiar. It ends with another downstate dugout conversation with Poulin, only this time, North is on the other side of the final score.

The versatile forward said he’s taking a “no days off” approach to the summer, which will include AAU basketball with Mercury Elite after focusing on his high school team during June. The Vikings opened play Monday at the Geneva Summer League, which features games Monday and Wednesday nights this month.

“I’m just trying to work on my defense a lot more,” Navigato said. “I’m trying to get quicker and jump higher.”

Making his body more Division I-friendly also is a high priority, with some early success.

“Coach Moore thought I’d gotten stronger since last time he saw me since the end of the season,” Navigato said. “I’ve been going to the weight room at least three times a week, if

not more.”

Joining Navigato as an upand-coming Division I prospect for Geneva is classmate KJ Santos, who was called up to varsity late last season and helped Geneva pull an upset against Hinsdale Central in a regional semifinal.

The Vikings also return starters Cam Cook and Chris Parrilli from last year’s 21-9 team, and their depth could be boosted by the return of Justin Durante, who missed most of the season after suffering a concussion.

“I love playing with him,” Navigato said of Durante. “He’s one of those players that every time the ball goes on the floor, he’s diving after it, and he’s always getting steals and he’s a good passer and a good shooter.

He does a lot of little things for our team.”

MAC schools, Harvard pursuing St. Charles North’s Johnson

By JAY SCHWAB jschwab@shawmedia.com Since standardized testing is weighing on St. Charles North tight end Garrett Johnson’s mind these days, here’s a warmup question.

Which of the following football offers is unlike the other: Ball State, Bowling Green, Central Michigan, Eastern Michigan and Harvard? If only they were all that simple.

Johnson, a 6-foot-4, 240-pound tight end who will be a senior for the North Stars in the fall, added a recent overture from Harvard as his fifth college offer.

While Harvard becomes an intriguing option on the academic front, it’s long been clear that Johnson is viewed as a solid, football fit in the Mid-American Conference, where each of his other four suitors hail from.

“That’s the feeling I get,” Johnson said.

Johnson plans to attend a camp at Northern Illinois today and wondered whether the Huskies could become another

MAC possibility. He said he would like to make his decision this summer before senior year rolls around.

Johnson said he scored a 27 on his ACT and is awaiting results on whether he was able to bolster that score, which might dictate how realistic of an option Harvard becomes.

“Right now they’re just telling me there’s a spot on the team for you but you still have to get those scores and stuff before they can guarantee you can make it in to the school,” Johnson said.

Johnson plans to visit Harvard later this month.

In the meantime, he and his teammates are acclimating to the summer camp run by new North football coach Rob Pomazak. Johnson said it’s already apparent that summer camp will be more intense than it has been in the past, a feeling that also applies to the offseason weight room workouts the team has undergone since Pomazak’s hiring.

“Before it was kind of just come and go as you please. …

Now it’s get everyone in here who is going to be playing football this year, and we’re going to work all together as a team, and we’re only allowed to wear our schools colors in the weight room every, single day,” Johnson said. “… Everyone’s a lot more committed, I guess, than ever before.”

Johnson said team members are embracing a fresh start that also includes new helmets and uniforms.

Bulldogs ready to ramp up: While many area football teams began their summer program this week, Batavia’s begins next week.

The Bulldogs return several key pieces from last year’s team that ran the table in the regular season for the second straight season before being upset by Downers Grove North in the first round of the 7A playoffs.

As if the lingering sting from that game doesn’t provide enough summer motivation, the Bulldogs have some major challenges to work toward off the bat.

“I believe we’ll be a very

good team but we have an exceptional opening two game [nonconference] schedule,” Batavia coach Dennis Piron said.

“We start with Glenbard North and then Richards. ... We’re playing two of the best teams in the state of Illinois to start our

football season. That’s as tough as I think anyone has to deal with [at the beginning of the season].”

Both of those games will take place at Bulldog Stadium.

“Very cool,” Piron said.

“Very exciting.”

This time next year, Geneva boys basketball standout Nate Navigato might be jaded to the college recruiting process.

For now, the rising junior forward finds it to be pretty amazing.

On Sunday, the 6-foot-6 forward received his first Division I scholarship offer from Illinois-Chicago, and it left him nearly speechless.

“It was just one of the coolest things ever,” Navigato said. “When they told me they offered me … I don’t even know how to describe it.”

The offer extended by UIC head coach Howard Moore and one of the Flames’ assistants came in person as Geneva’s summer team was attending a one-day shootout at UIC. Northern Illinois and Evansville are among the other Division I programs that are in steady communication with Navigato.

Cubs reliever sets up camp in Geneva

By KEVIN DRULEY kdruley@shawmedia.com GENEVA – Cubs righthander Shawn Camp officially rehabbed a sprained right big toe during his inning of scoreless relief for the Cougars on Tuesday.

Somewhere along the way in a 14-pitch, 10-strike outing during Kane County’s 7-6 loss to Burlington, Camp also soothed his baseball soul.

“It’s really good to be here and just see young guys who, you know, all they want is to reach that [major league] level,” Camp said. “And I was there. I always Shawn Camp tell them it can happen. It can happen.”

On the disabled list since May 22, Camp hopes to return to the Cubs soon after a scheduled two-inning rehab outing when the Cougars host Wisconsin on Friday. He wants to work both sides of the plate then while testing his fastball on the inner half against lefties and righties.

His fastball produced a pair of first-pitch groundouts to second base and also helped Camp end the sixth with a strikeout of Bees right fielder Kyle Johnson. Camp also showed confidence with his slider. The Cougars made a pair of errors behind him.

“Let’s just throw velocity out of the window,” said Camp, who is not known as a flamethrower. “The way it was coming out of my hand and obviously the way they were hitting it into the ground is a good sign.”

A Midwest League All-Star with Clinton in 1998, Camp happily spoke with players interested in asking him about his background. A 10-year veteran, he made a career-high 80 appearances with the Cubs last season and was 1-1 with a 7.56 ERA in 20 games this season before landing on the DL. “You come around and kind of just see what he’s doing and how he gets ready for each and every game,” Orozco said. “How he goes about his business. So you go out there and kind of take a couple mental notes.”

Outfielder Bijan Rademacher saw things from the other side.

“You can see their stuff and see what kind of stuff you have to get better [at] to be able to hit that” in the majors, he said.

Camp was not in any hurry to leave Fifth Third Bank Ballpark, and stayed to complete a cardio session after his outing.

He’s the first Cub to rehab with the Cougars since the sides launched a two-year player-development contract in September. In April, righty Matt Garza was held out of a planned appearance due to inclement weather, while second baseman Darwin Barney ultimately headed elsewhere to rehab after originally telling reporters he was Geneva-bound.

Back to the bench: Forward Viktor Stalberg spent the first two games of the Western Conference semifinals on the bench. He’s likely to start there when the Stanley Cup Final begins tonight at the United Center. Stalberg was on the Hawks’ fifth line in practice Tuesday morning, replaced in his normal fourth-line role by Brandon Bollig, who skated with Michael Frolik and Marcus Kruger.

Quenneville was asked if the change is likely to carry over to today’s opener against the Bruins.

“We’ll see – it was just practice today,” Quenneville said.

“There’s a likelihood, a probability that could happen. And they played well together, that line [that skated together Tuesday] all year long. It could happen.”

Stalberg, who missed only one game during the regular season was noticeably frustrated. He said Quenneville informed him of his decision in a conversation that he wouldn’t discuss.

“I feel like I’ve done what I’ve been asked to and if they want some more toughness in the first game, so be it – I can’t affect that,” Stalberg said. “All I can do is work hard, show them I’m ready to play if need be. Hopefully, I’ll get another chance this year because I

think I can make a difference.”

Long time, no see: The Hawks and Bruins haven’t seen one another since the fourth game of the 2011-12 regular season,when Boston edged the Hawks 3-2 in a shootout.

Quenneville didn’t sound overly concerned about knowing what to expect in the upcoming Stanley Cup Final.

“There’s probably a lot of unpredictability in everybody’s mind with how it’s going to play itself out,” Quenneville said. “I think with video and watching hockey and scouts and people you talk to in the game, I think you have a pretty fair assessment of how they’re going to play. I don’t think we complicate our team’s game as well and so I think it’s a pretty straightforward game.”

CHICAGO – No one has questioned the Blackhawks’ confidence during a postseason run that seemed to be on solid footing against Minnesota, that nearly ended against Detroit and that regained momentum against Los Angeles.

Experience has taught the Hawks well as they prepare for their second Stanley Cup Final in four years. It’s a vast difference from the 2010 championship run when the Hawks had plenty of talent before the roster was dismantled by the salary cap. Now, coach Joel Quenneville said much of his core group are more mature than they were the last time around.

“I think maybe our team was too young and stupid to even know what was going on,” forward Patrick Kane said during Tuesday’s media day at the United Center.

Center Dave Bolland said veteran Marian Hossa – who is playing in his fourth Stanley Cup Final in six years – has been one of the stabilizing voices in the Hawks dressing room, helping keep things evenkeeled. That attitude, he said Tuesday, will be key in what’s expected to be a long, tough series with the Bruins.

“Last time [the attitude was], ‘We’re here, we’re here,” Bolland said. “I’m not saying it’s that different – we’re still here and it’s a huge accomplishment still – but being here and sort of feeling it out with all

More Content Now With the release of the new political thriller “The East,” Brit Marling earns herself a hat trick of a moviemaking hat trick. This is the third film (after “Another Earth” and “Sound of My Voice”) that she’s co-written, co-produced and starred in.

The 30-year-old Chicago native has also been doing a lot of acting for others, most recently opposite Robert Redford in “The Company You Keep,” and last year as the daughter of Richard Gere’s character in “Arbitrage.”

But Marling appears a bit surprised that she’s made a career out of acting and filmmaking. It seems to her that it was only yesterday when she was studying economics at Georgetown University.

She spoke by phone from Dallas about “The East” and how she made it to Hollywood.

Ed Symkus: Weren’t you supposed to be working on Wall Street by now?

Brit Marling: That was supposedly the plan. I feel like life should just be called adventures in Plan B (laughs). I studied economics in school. And during my junior summer internship, I worked at a bank as an analyst. Lots of people around me loved what they were doing. But it just didn’t move me. There was a moment there, when I was in my cubicle, crunching numbers on Excel, and I thought, “I’ve gotta get out of here, this isn’t for me.”

ES: Weren’t you already involved in making films at that point?

BM: Yes. In my freshman year, I saw a film that was co-directed by [students]

So, I basically stalked them on campus until they let me make movies with them.

I was pitching myself as a sound girl-lighting tech, but Zal said, “Well, maybe you should be in one.”

I had done plays in high school, and I liked acting, so I did it and had a lot of fun, but I never really thought of it as a thing to do with one’s life. It wasn’t until I graduated college that I realized that the thing that you love to do is exactly what you should do with your life.

ES: When you all went to L.A., was it difficult to break in?

BM: We had a really hard time when we first got there.

Mike and I were doing documentary work. I was getting work as a camera woman on odd projects. I was trying to audition for things, but I couldn’t figure out how to even get an audition except for parts in intense horror films.

So, we started making films on our own, again, very much the way we did at Georgetown, and then we

realized that we had a lot to offer the system, about how to make films now, for less.

So, we changed our perspective a bit.

ES: “The East” is about an FBI agent that infiltrates a group of eco-terrorists who are living off the grid. Did the movie take shape based on the time you and Zal lived on the road for a while?

BM: At one point, four summers ago, in L.A., we had run out of money. So, we decided to go have an adventure. We were reading about the freegan and anarchist movements, and we were interested in what young people in this country were feeling and thinking.

So, we learned to trainhop, then got some back packs and train-hopped back and forth across the states.

We stayed on organic farms, and fell in with freegan groups and collectives, and learned about living off the grid.

The biggest thing we learned was about living and working in tribes, and the value of a collective. That’s when we got back into the

sort of more tribal filmmaking. We knew we could make collective films with the same sort of dumpster-diving spirit. That’s when we made “Another Earth” and “Sound of My Voice.” It wasn’t till years later that we noticed when we talked to people about that summer, they seem very interested. What if we put them in an espionage thriller? That was the idea.

ES: You’re a writer and actor and producer. Are there plans to start directing?

BM: I get a lot of pleasure out of writing and acting, and I feel so challenged by the craft of acting. It never seems to get any easier to be honest and present and not close up because you have a moment of insecurity. I feel so compelled by that, and I’m in awe of people who can act and direct at the same time.

So, I don’t know if I can bite that off and chew it. At least not now. But maybe somewhere down the road.

Dear Abby: My grandmother was very poor, but she was generous with what she had. As a child, I noticed that most of the gifts she received were regifted to others. At first, it upset me because I spent a lot of time choosing

a “perfect” gift for her. Then I realized she was enjoying the gift twice. She loved receiving it, but it gave her even more pleasure to pass it on to someone else to enjoy when she couldn’t afford to buy a present on her limited income.

I get so tired of people whining about “regifting.” Instead of being happy that someone gave them something, people worry about how much was spent. (I’m willing to bet the real reason for the upset is that the regift can’t be returned or exchanged.)

People who don’t want to receive regifts should let the givers know so they won’t waste their generosity on them in the future. – The Joy Of Giving Dear Joy: I see the issue differently, because I suspect that some complainers may have confused the monetary value of the item with how much they – the recipients – are valued in the relationship. As you point out – and I agree – it really IS the spirit in which a gift is given that counts.

Short course of oral steroids can help chronic sinusitis Dear Doctor K: I have chronic sinusitis and nasal polyps. My specialist suggested trying oral corticosteroids. What do you think?

Dear Reader: “Steroids” is short for anti-inflammatory hormones called corticosteroids, and “oral” means steroids taken in pill form.

I think a short course of five to seven days of oral steroids is worth a try. That’s particularly true if your sinusitis isn’t getting any better. My colleague, Neil Bhattacharyya, an ear, nose and throat doctor and professor at Harvard Medical School, agrees.

Much of what I say below is based on his advice.

As you know, sinusitis is an inflammation of the mucous membranes that line the sinuses.

It often causes headaches and an uncomfortable feeling of pressure in the face.

Chronic inflammation in the membranes of your nose and sinuses can cause fleshy growths called polyps. Not all cases of chronic sinusitis result in polyps, but when they form, polyps can block your nasal passages and sinuses. This makes breathing more difficult and can diminish your sense of smell. Polyps also

I assume you’ve tried the usual techniques for dealing with sinusitis: inhaling steam, taking extra-long showers, drinking lots of water and sleeping with your head elevated. A course of antibiotics is also often appropriate if there are clear signs of bacterial infection in your sinuses (such as green or brown discharge when you blow your nose, a fever and a rotten feeling).

Once sinusitis becomes chronic, the inflammation can take on a life of its own. Corticosteroids become an important treatment option, as they have anti-inflammatory effects.

The first type of steroid to try is one that can be inhaled into the nose. Inhaled steroids deliver the medicine directly to the inflamed tissues that need to be quieted.

However, polyps can block the passage of the inhaled steroids to

some of the inflamed areas.

If inhaled steroids don’t do the job, it’s worth considering a brief course of steroids in pill form.

Taking an oral steroid such as prednisone for a week or so reduces the size of the polyps a little and decreases overall inflammation in the nose. Shrinking polyps and reducing inflammation allow the topical steroid to reach its target and be more effective.

The reason I and many doctors hold off on using steroids in pill form is that the medicine travels in the blood, exposing the whole body to the medication. (In contrast, topical steroids expose only the nose and sinuses.)

Side effects are more likely from oral steroids than from inhaled steroids; they may include elevated pressure in the eyes (glaucoma), increased blood pressure and mood swings. But in my experience, a short course of oral steroids, such as what I’m recommending here, rarely produces serious side effects.

Dr. Wallace: Last year I was dating a guy who was heavily into cocaine and pretty soon I joined him. I was on it steadily for about a month, but, luckily for me, we broke up and I stopped using all drugs – cold turkey.

Since then, I’ve read that drugs can have a devastating effect on unborn babies. Will my drug use cause me to have a deformed baby when I get pregnant?

Please answer soon. I’m engaged to a wonderful man now, and we are about to set a date for our wedding. – Nameless, Rock Island Dear Nameless: First of all, congratulations on giving up cocaine cold turkey! This is no small achievement. You whipped drugs before they whipped you.

I checked with our family physician and was told that the greatest possible damage to an unborn infant happens when the mother uses illegal drugs or alcohol while pregnant.

The good news is that if you refrain from illegal drugs and alcohol, your chances are nil that your baby would suffer physically or mentally from your previous cocaine use.

Dr. Wallace: I’m 17 and a very religious young lady. I try not to commit sins. It’s hard, but I try. Our family consists of my mother, father and an 18-yearold brother. No one in our family smokes or drinks (of course, no drugs), and we all attend church on a regular basis.

The only major sin that I know of that my family indulges in is buying lotto tickets.

They don’t buy them all the time, but when the amount of money someone can win goes up to $100 million or more, they all get

It’s a sin to gamble.”

My brother says that if he’s spending $10 a week when the payoff is $100 million, what about the millions of people who put money into the stock market?

I also think that is a form of gambling.

They feel those who cannot afford to play do play and spend more money than they should. The odds of winning a lottery are very slim. But, as all players say, “someone has got to win. It might as well be me.”

Is playing the lottery considered gambling?

Probably! Does your family have a gambling problem? Probably not.

Don’t allow this to destroy the love you have for your family and their love for you.

They are responsible for their deeds and you for yours. Some states use profits from state lotteries to help fund educational programs.

Dear Abby: My partner of 12 years and I are well-educated, successful career men. Every few months my mom comes to visit, and we all enjoy spending time together.

The last few visits were not so great. We caught Mom snooping in our bedroom and our home office. When we confronted her, she got upset and stormed out of the room in tears. I have asked her to respect our privacy, but her response is that she – as the mother – is the one who deserves respect.

We recently had some renovations done to the house that included locks on our bedroom and office doors. When neither of us are home, the doors stay locked.

Nothing was said about it during Mom’s last visit, but last week we received a note from her telling us not to come for our usual summer visit. I tried to call her, but she won’t answer.

Today I talked with my aunt (Mom’s sister), who told me Mom is furious over the locks. My aunt also expressed disappointment in me or “shutting Mom out.” Please advise. – In A Jam In St. Pete

Otto von Bismarck said, “People never lie so much as after a hunt, during a war, or before an election.” Bridge players do not so much lie after a deal as not realize that they failed to take as many tricks as possible.

This layout was in yesterday’s column. Then South, hunting for 10 tricks in four spades, ruffed the second heart and immediately played on diamonds to take six spades, two diamonds and two clubs. (If diamonds had not been 3-3, declarer would have tried the club finesse.)

Now let’s turn to the defenders’ hunt for four tricks. How can they succeed after West leads the heart king?

South’s sequence, a takeout double over East’s weak two followed by a jump to four spades, showed a very strong hand with at least a six-card suit. North hoped that no one would double!

East should realize from the bidding and the dummy that South has only one heart. Maybe West has a trump winner, but if not, the defenders must take three minor-suit tricks. These might come automatically, but perhaps South has a strong club holding that needs to be led through. (There cannot be a need for an immediate diamond shift.)

East should overtake West’s heart king with his ace and switch to the club nine (the high card denying an honor in the suit).

South can win, cash the spade and diamond aces, and play a second diamond, but East overtakes West’s jack with his queen and leads another club.

Here, this leaves declarer with no chance, having to lose four tricks.
