Teams take home Dragon Boat Race titles

By NICOLE WESKERNA nweskerna@shawmedia.com ST. CHARLES – After beating their drums and rowing their way down the Fox River during RiverFest in St. Charles, a handful of teams claimed bragging rights after placing in the Dragon Boat Races.

Each boat carried 18 paddlers, one drummer to keep the rowing beat and an experienced steerman.

Two boats at a time raced down the about 300meter stretch of river near Pottawatamie Park on Saturday and Sunday.

Race coordinator Paul Wasylyszyn said Saturday’s winners in the Komodo division, which is for teams that are faster in time trials, included the Bad @ 55 Bikers team, which claimed first place. Second place went to the Paddlin’ for MB team, and third place went to the Jump Ship team.

In Saturday’s Lizard division, which is for teams that were slower in time trials, the Rookies team came in first place.

Two racers also were awarded the Carol Oie Spirit Award, which is named after one of the people responsible for starting the Dragon Boat Races in St. Charles.

Saturday’s spirit award went to the Knight Riders and

Sunday’s award went to the Fit Mommas team.

Wasylyszyn said 27 teams participated over the weekend – the most he has seen in six years of coordinating the races. He said winning the race isn’t necessarily about strength.

“It’s technique and timing,” he said. “It’s truly a team sport.”

Truck driver charged with causing bridge damage

By AL LAGATTOLLA alagattolla@shawmedia.com SUGAR GROVE – A truck driver from Nebraska has been charged in an incident in which he is accused of carrying an oversized load that damaged an overpass on Route 47 and then left the scene, according to a news release issued by the Sugar Grove Police Department.

Jay L. Pavey, 57, of Lincoln, Neb., is charged with unlawful use or damage of a highway, failure to provide information following a traffic crash and violation of an oversize permit in the March 19 incident at the overpass that is near Routes 30 and 56, according to the release.

Police said Sugar Grove Police Detective Steve Kurzawa investigated the incident

with only a vague description of the truck and the oversized load.

At the time of the incident, police sent out a release with Kuzawa’s contact information, seeking help from anyone who might have witnessed it. Kurzawa at the time said that chunks of concrete from the bridge fell onto

Route 47 after the truck struck a metal girder underneath the bridge.

According to the release, the bridge sustained significant damage, although police could not estimate the cost of the damage.

The release indicated that a photograph of the load was located on an Illinois State

Police camera, and the equipment was found to be a large piece of mining equipment.

Police said Kurzawa located the manufacturer and tracked down the trucking company and the driver.

Police said Pavey’s next court appearance is set for 9 a.m. June 26 at the Aurora Branch Court.

Microbrew gets committee’s nod in Geneva

By BRENDA SCHORY bschory@shawmedia.com GENEVA – In two votes, Geneva aldermen Monday unanimously approved zoning text amendments to allow production brewing and a tasting room in the city.

The actions were necessary to define production brewing, and to allow packaged brew to be sold, and consumed on site

in a tasting room in an area zoned for light industry, officials said.

The Plan Commission already has approved the application following a hearing last month.

Eric Hobbs and Thomas Korder, owners of Penrose Brewing LLC, sought the application to allow for a microbrewery with sales and a tasting room.

Hobbs said he was happy for the city’s support to establish a microbrew with a tasting room at 509 Stevens St., in a small strip mall near Wheeler Park.

“I think this all went great,” Hobbs said. “It’s really nice to see the city get behind us in such a nice way. I grew up here; Thomas is looking forward to moving out here. And we couldn’t be happier to be calling Geneva home.”

Aldermen: Housing not wanted at site

By ASHLEY RHODEBECK arhodebeck@shawmedia.com ST. CHARLES – As the Planning and Development Committee reviewed the proposed comprehensive plan Monday, aldermen were warned that their push to nix residential units from the former St. Charles Mall site could scare potential developers away.

“You would be shutting the door, I think,” said Devin Lavigne of Houseal Lavigne, a planning consultant engaged to assist with the plan.

Rita Tungare, the city’s director of community development, also cautioned aldermen, saying the removal of

residential altogether limits the city’s flexibility with that 30-acre site at Randall Road and Route 38.

Aldermen – who also supported no residential on the Charlestowne Mall site – didn’t finish their discussion by press time but expressed strong opinions earlier, especially 4th Ward Alderman Jim Martin.

“I have some very serious concerns about any additional apartments in that area,” he said. “… I have some problems about what could happen if we didn’t assert ourselves with what we really wanted there.”

Mark Armstrong, chairman of the Comprehensive Plan Task Force, told the commit-

tee that removing all residential also would include senior housing and adaptable housing.

Fifth Ward Alderman Ed Bessner said future unknowns made him open to residential possibilities.

“I don’t want to see ourselves get handcuffed,” he said.

Aldermen noted that future City Councils always can change the comprehensive plan if they choose. Tungare said the city likely would get criticized for reacting to a developer. It is better for the council to establish a vision that includes flexibility instead of putting itself in a reactive role, she said.

Michael Olesen, owner of Stockholm’s, 306 W. State St. – also a microbrewery as well as a restaurant – voiced his support for Penrose Brewing.

Olesen said he also is a neighbor, living 2.5 blocks away from the strip mall on Stevens.

“I lend my whole-hearted support,” Olesen said. “It would draw in tourism. The craft brewing industry is truly growing. This would be a feath-

er in Geneva’s cap.”

When 4th Ward Alderman Dorothy Flanagan asked if Olesen would allow Penrose’s brew to be sold at Stockholm’s, however, Olesen responded with a resounding, “no.”

Hobbs said once the City Council takes final action on the zoning text amendments that allow the brewery, they plan to open possibly in July or August.

Finalists selected for 3rd Ward seat KANE COUNTY CHRONICLE editorial@kcchronicle.com ST. CHARLES – A task force led by Mayor Ray Rogina has narrowed the 3rd Ward alderman candidate list from 13 to four, according to a news release from the city of St. Charles.

The full City Council was expected to interview the finalists – Charles A. Amenta II, Todd A. Bancroft, Dianne E. Kellett and Carolyn M. W. Waibel – during executive session Monday.

The interviews were scheduled to last 25 minutes each.

Afterward, Rogina and the City Council planned to discuss the candidates and try to reach a consensus on the best

one.

The chosen candidate is expected to be seated before the June 17 City Council meeting.

That person will serve the remainder of the 3rd Ward aldermanic term once held by Rogina, who left the office in May to become mayor.

• Kellett has lived in St. Charles for 11 years and volunteers for the St. Charles Mothers Club and as a Lincoln School Very Important Parent.

Kellett is an owner of Think Driven Inc., an auto care facility, and Pick a Do Inc., a bookkeeping and errand service.

• Waibel first moved to St. Charles in 1978 and has lived here for four years. She has been active in PTOs for Ferson Creek and Lincoln elementary schools and was most recently employed at Paychex Inc. as a sales consultant.

What the wildlife center’s website advises visitors is not to assume a nest of baby animals is abandoned.

“Humans babies have to be with a mom or someone 24/7, so when we find baby animals alone and unprotected, we think they are abandoned,” Flint said.

“Wild animals, in order to protect their babies, actually stay away. The parents have a scent that babies don’t, and they are staying away so they are not attracting predators to their babies. Some moms only come around to feed the babies.”

She also welcomes calls with questions about whether to leave a baby alone.

Although the center’s population constantly changes, the current count is about 45 raccoons, 60 baby mallard ducklings, 18 goslings, four injured geese, a fawn, opossums, squirrels, baby birds and two injured great horned owl fledglings.

“One of the owl fledglings had an ulcer to his eye and we are treating it with medication,” Flint said.

“The other one was

brought into PetSmart. They found the baby on the ground and said, ‘I had to bring it in somewhere.’ ” The center will transfer the owls to a raptor rescue center where they can be safely released once they learn to hunt, Flint said.

“It’s constantly changing here,” Flint said. “Some animals are here only two weeks, some for six weeks.

Any and all, almost anything you can name – we’ve had it.”

Sometimes wildlife and human life are just incompatible, said Zavitz, of St. Charles, who still is “chasing critters” for a living.

One thing to do is to try not to provide a habitat for them at your home.

“People don’t realize that a skunk will dig a hole under the concrete of a patio or stoop and have a litter,” Zavitz said. “They’re out of the rain. It’s like a condo to them.”

When Zavitz captures a skunk or raccoon, he takes it to be put down, as the law requires.

“A lot of times, raccoons and skunks are pretty sick, usually distemper. They’re

walking sideways, and people think they have rabies,” Zavitz said.

“They are also potential rabies carriers. It’s against the law to trap and release them where they will cause problems somewhere else.”

When he’s not at work catching critters, Zavitz said he gets along fine with wildlife at his home – most of the time.

“I went to get a bag of cat food and birdseed and forgot to take them out of the truck, [and] there were all these little footprints on top of the black tarp when I went out there,” Zavitz said.

“A raccoon got in there and had a feast.”

“Raccoons are smart,” the St. Charles resident said. “Our dog was stupid three times, got sprayed by a skunk.”

After his late springer spaniel Cricket got sprayed for the third time, he called Phil Zavitz, who came out and trapped the nuisance skunk. Zavitz retired as Kane County’s animal control czar after 16 years to start his own company, Mr. Z Wild Animal Removal.

“Well, Cricket was safe in the backyard until another one moved into the neighborhood,” Andrini said. “It’s the same with chipmunks and coyotes. You move one out, another one moves in.”

With Cricket now in doggy heaven, Andrini said he lives with wandering wildlife just fine.

“When you put food out for the birds,” Andrini said, “you’re going to attract other stuff, and you accept that.”

Even as people become more urban and suburban, they and their backyards still are part of the natural world – and that includes critters.

Sometimes human-animal encounters are noneventful.

Other times, like with Andrini’s dog, it’s an intense experience.

Sometimes encounters are more eventful for the wild animals, naturalists say, as development continues to encroach on habitat.

Ashley Flint, director of the Fox Valley Wildlife Center in Elburn, said more people are bringing in orphaned and injured wildlife than ever before.

“Two years ago, we took in 2,000 animals,” Flint said. “Last year we got almost 3,000. Probably some is awareness of us. People find these wild animals and they

After winning a date with her in a pool game, Jack was led to marry the love of his life, Connie Bevan. They were married Feb. 12, 1955, and enjoyed 58 years of marriage.

Mary was born and raised in Pittsburgh. She met and married Charles G. Whinfrey Jr. while attending Cornell University in Ithaca, N.Y. Mary was preceded in death by her husband, and is survived by her three children, Donald (Ginger) Whinfrey of Manhattan Beach, Calif., Peter Whinfrey of Geneva and Jane (Roger) Harris also of Geneva.

Mary also is survived by her grandchildren, Scott Whinfrey, Emily (Chris) Whinfrey Bourassa, Abigail (Jeff) Harris Szklarek and Andrew Harris; and great-grandchildren, Colin, Cate and Evie.

Mary was instrumental in the

founding of Producers Chemical Company in 1963 along with her husband, Chuck. The company is celebrating its 50th year this year and is currently located in Sugar Grove. Mary had a great sense of style and for almost 30 years worked and modeled at The Little Traveler in Geneva, and other retail boutiques in Naples, Fla. Mary and Chuck had a home in Naples, where they spent 40 years in the winter months.

Mary was an avid reader, Mahjong player, dog lover and traveler.

She will be greatly missed by her family and friends, who knew and loved her for her fun, upbeat attitude and always being young at heart.

Private memorial services will be in Chautauqua, N.Y.; Naples, Fla.; and Aurora.

They started their family in Cicero and later moved to Woodridge in 1963. After Jack’s retirement in 1996, they moved to Rhinelander, and have lived here since. Jack had many interests, which included coaching Little League baseball, bowling, golfing, pool, fishing and hockey. He was an avid Blackhawk fan.

He is survived by his wife, Constance “Connie” Kenealy of Rhinelander; his daughter, Darlene (Steven) Riebe of St. Charles; his son, William (Robin) Kenealy of Rhinelander; his grandchildren, Chris and Mike (Dana) Riebe, Colleen (Mark)Vogtmann, and Jamie and Tara Hauser; his great-grandchildren, Kyle and Hailey Vogtmann; and many nieces and nephews.

By ERIC SCHELKOPF eschelkopf@shawmedia.com BATAVIA – Vicki Kostrzewa had her back turned to the TV screen when it was announced that she had just won the grand prize drawing of $20,000 as part of the 20th anniversary celebration of Harrah’s Joliet casino.

“One of my friends was looking at the TV screen, and told me,” she said. “That was exciting, to turn around and see my name up there.”

Kostrzewa and a group of friends were attending a barbecue the casino put on as part of its 20th anniversary celebration. She was hoping to win one of the $1,000 cash prizes being given out.

“It’s the biggest thing I ever won,” Kostrzewa said.

“It was a real surprise. I just

didn’t expect it.”

Kostrzewa and her husband, John, haven’t decided what they will do with the money.

“I put it in my savings account,” she said. “I thought the safest place to put it was my savings account.”

Harrah’s reaffirmed its commitment to the community by also presenting $1,000 donations to 20 Joliet area nonprofit organizations.

my 2011 tax bill to 2012’s – it is 8.75 percent, as compared with other expenses that increased at only .29 percent. Do you know that our local real estate taxes will double if the state of Illinois shifts the burden back onto local taxing entities?

3. Hogs will attack the food source if they don’t get enough. Has your household income gone up these last years like government spending? Most of us have tightened our budgets and cut back, rather than increased spending! Are your employer or you funding more into your retirement? I feel taken advantage of and being attacked by those who are supposed to be working for us.

4. Hogs were created by God to serve as food for us, not for us to serve as their food.

It is time that we, the owners of our local, state and federal government, wake up and start sending responsible elected officials who will lead and manage the governmental systems to ensure that basic services are provided and that the future of governmental entities is sustainable. The silo that feeds the trough is empty.

Debating the balance of security, privacy THE WASHINGTON POST Just recently, the country has had to absorb a rush of information about the techniques the government uses to collect intelligence information from everything from our phones to Facebook.

The rapid-fire revelations about what’s going on in the secret world of the National Security Agency and elsewhere in the executive branch’s counterterrorism operation have been contradictory at times and confusing often. One of the only things that seems sure is that the news has rekindled a national debate about what Americans should accept in the fight against the continu-

ing threat of international terrorism.

President Barack Obama was right Friday when he said that Americans can’t have 100 percent security and 100 percent privacy.

With that in mind, Congress passed a variety of measures that empowered the executive branch to collect a lot of information – with supervision.

The government should be able to intercept the communications of non-Americans outside U.S. borders to investigate possible plots. When they can demonstrate necessity to the judicial branch, law enforcement agencies should have access to information about Americans’

calls, too. At times, such judicial review should take place in secret. These, in broad strokes, are authorized by some of the more controversial provisions in the Patriot Act and amendments to the Foreign Intelligence Surveillance Act (FISA).

That legislation also foresaw reasonable protections of Americans’ privacy.

Collection of Americans’ information must be minimized under laws passed to allow targeting of foreigners.

The secret court overseeing government anti-terrorism activities should have meaningful power. Congress should be kept up to date.

And aside and apart from the laws, the government,

as much as possible, should let Americans know what methods are being used – and to what degree they are sacrificing their liberty – so that there can be an informed and honest national discussion.

Mr. Obama and others in the executive branch have claimed over the past few days that the American intelligence community has met these standards. Nothing has demonstrated an evasion of judicial review. Many members of Congress said that they have been briefed.

But, because the system is premised on trust, the government would have a stronger case, and the debate might be less slapdash, if it revealed more. It is unclear

to us why the existence of an extensive database of information about U.S. phone calls should have been secret, or why tech companies, some of which publish regular reports on user privacy, can’t reveal more basic information about their interactions with government, such as the number of FISA requests they get in a given period of time.

Finally, whether a fair balance is being struck between security and privacy depends heavily on the procedures in place to minimize the collection and retention of Americans’ data.

The public ought to hear more about how that is being accomplished.

To the Editor: We all recently filed our IRS and state annual tax statements, and this weekend I wrote our real estate tax first installment check. It reminded me of lessons learned from the farm. I was not raised on a farm but was blessed with the privilege of spending summers on a relative’s farm from ages 11 to 15. It was a wonderful experience with many life lessons learned.

My uncle raised Yorkshire hogs, Appaloosa horses and Hereford beef cattle. 2. Hogs do not share; they fight off others to get what they want. Have you heard the rhetoric between local elected officials and state elected officials about who is funding the pathetic state of public retirements? Sugar Grove names Rollins as police chief

By ERIC SCHELKOPF eschelkopf@shawmedia.com SUGAR GROVE – Patrick Rollins said he is ready to step into his new role as Sugar Grove police chief.

Rollins, 51, who will begin his duties July 8, has been Lombard’s deputy police chief for the past 12 years.

“It’s been something that has been a dream of mine,” Rollins said. “I have been mentored Patrick by some phe- Rollins nomenal chiefs, including the current Lombard police chief, Ray Byrne.

Sugar Grove village trustees recently approved Rollins as the new police chief. Longtime Sugar Grove police chief Brad Sauer retired in June 2012 after spending 24 years with the department, the past nine as police chief.

Rollins replaces interim police chief Ron Moser, who has been in that role since July 2012.

“We think he will be the right fit for the community,” Sugar Grove Village President Sean Michels said.

“He’s young. He’s got a lot of well-rounded experience. He’s very personable. He really wants to reach out and meet members of the community.”

Rollins said he already has talked to some Sugar Grove residents as part of the application process.

“I wanted to get their opinions,” he said. “I wanted to make sure the job was a good fit for me as well.”

Rollins was selected by the FBI National Academy to be trained at their headquarters in Quantico, Va., and was a member of the Academy’s 248th graduating class of 2012. He also is a graduate of Northwestern University’s Center for Public Safety Executive Management Program and received the Director’s Award for Top Academic Performance at the Command Officer’s Southern Police Institute.

Most recently, Rollins launched the Violent Intruder Program in DuPage, Cook and surrounding counties to increase awareness of school and community protection.

He also has extensive command experience with community and sporting events, including the 2012 PGA Ryder Cup.

Officer helps rescue kitten

By NICOLE WESKERNA nweskerna@shawmedia.com SUGAR GROVE – A Sugar Grove police officer helped rescue a kitten that was clinging to the air cleaner of a semi truck for hundreds of miles following a traffic stop late last month.

According to a news release, Officer Kevin Forest stopped the driver of a semi truck about 5:30 p.m. May 25 for talking on a cellphone in a construction zone. He was pulled over near Route 47 and Chelsea Avenue in Sugar Grove.

During the traffic stop, the officer heard a cat and asked the driver if a cat was on board.

When the driver said he didn’t have a cat with him,

Forest decided to investigate further, the release states.

Forest checked under the hood of the semi and found a kitten clinging to the truck’s air cleaner. Sgt. Tom Barna with the Sugar Grove Police Department said the air cleaner was located near the truck’s engine, toward the windshield. “[Forest] was just going to pull him over and warn him, but then he heard a cat meowing and wondered where it was coming from,” Barna said.

The trucker had left from Tomah, Wis., and the truck had traveled 284 miles by the time Forest had stopped the driver.

Barna said Forest took care of the kitten until Kane County Animal Control picked it up.

The St. Charles Police Department responded to an apartment building in the 100 block of North 15th Street in St. Charles about 5:36 p.m. Saturday for a fight in progress, spokesman Edward Paul McCurtain said.

The fight started as a verbal confrontation that escalated to a physical altercation, he said. At one point, Brubaker went into his apartment and returned with a Farberware kitchen knife to confront his neighbor.

Paramedics provided aid to the 23-yearold, who refused to be taken to the hospital for further treatment, McCurtain said.

Brubaker, of the 100 block of North 15th Street, was charged with aggravated battery with a deadly weapon. If convicted, the Class 1 felony carries a penalty of four to 15 years in prison, McCurtain said.

According to the Kane County sheriff’s online records, Brubaker was in custody for two days before bonding out Monday afternoon. He is expected in court at 9 a.m.

ST. CHARLES – A 22-year-old man trying to join the Second Chance Pre-trial Diversion Program through the Kane County State’s Attorney’s Office was charged with a felony Friday after defrauding a drug test, St. Charles Police Department spokesman Paul McCurtain said.

Dedrick Dedrick Glov- Glover-Pool er-Pool reportedly brought a condom filled with a friend’s urine to a drug testing facility in the 300 block of North Randall Road in St. Charles in an attempt to pass it off as his own.

An employee for the drug testing company became suspicious when Glover-Pool appeared to be having problems providing a sample, McCurtain said. He said the employee also noticed the

urine was cold when it should have been at body temperature.

The employee asked Glover-Pool about it, and Glover-Pool admitted the urine wasn’t his, McCurtain said.

St. Charles police responded to the building about 6:30 p.m. and took Glover-Pool into custody, McCurtain said, noting they also seized the sample as evidence.

Glover-Pool, of the 1400 block of Golden Oaks Parkway, Aurora, was charged with defrauding a drug test, a Class 4 felony, McCurtain said.

According to the Kane County sheriff’s online records, Glover-Pool remained in custody Monday afternoon on $5,000 bail. He is next expected in court June 19.

McCurtain didn’t know what charge prompted Glover-Pool to apply for the diversion program.

The state’s attorney’s diversion programs give certain individuals a second chance to keep their record clear of a criminal conviction.

ontrary to appearances, Kelly Manski does feel fatigue during soccer matches.

She just conceals it better than just about any other player around.

The seemingly omnipresent Manski was all over the field again as a St. Charles North senior, and she added clutch goal-scoring to her repertoire, nabbing Kane County Chronicle Girls Soccer Player of the Year honors.

Manski’s conditioning never is in question, and her skill level continues to catch up.

“I looked at her this year thinking she couldn’t possibility be more fit than she was last year, and this year she came in again and was leading all of our runs and pushing people right from the start,” North coach Ruth Vostal said.

Manski participated in one year of high school cross country as a junior, and immediately became one of the program’s top runners. Shin splints that developed helped convince her to focus solely on soccer – she had already given up basketball after sophomore year – but Manski continued to put her highly charged motor to good use on the soccer field.

“She always encourages everyone to stay with her, too, which is a great aspect to have because she just pushes our team on team runs, and even in practices, whenever we have fitness, she’s always encouraging everyone to run up with her,” said North midfielder Natalie Winkates, a longtime high school and club teammate of Manski’s.

“And then during games, to have her as an outside forward or outside-mid, she always gets up and back. She’s great to have for defense and offense. Her energy right from the start really helps our team.”

Manski will play at Wisconsin-Milwaukee. the midfield role she had in the past. But Manski was no prototypical forward, using her speed and endurance to make plays all over the field to the extent that Vostal often wouldn’t know where to find her.

Not that the veteran coach minded. Manski earned the long leash.

“I would know she would get back and was making a choice I knew was best for the team,” Vostal said. “ …

I trusted her to do what was best, and I knew she could pretty much outwork anyone she needed to to get back in that position if she needed to.”

A Wisconsin-Milwaukee recruit, Manski scored 12 goals and notched 10 assists as a senior, but it was the timing of her production rather than raw output that was most impressive.

Several of her scores came in North’s biggest matches.

She scored off a slick move in the Upstate Eight Conference River champion North Stars’ 1-0 win against St. Charles East, and notched arguably her signature score of the season by cracking in a free kick in the second half of North’s 1-0 win against Geneva in the IHSA Class 3A Hoffman Estates Sectional

“Finally in the second half when I did score, I think it lifted everyone up and we played even harder until the end, not letting them score,” Manski said.

When Manski uncorked that whistling free kick, Kristen Manski said she “jumped out of the bleachers.” Kristen Manski, a college goalkeeper at Valparaiso, was only able to see a handful of her little sister’s matches this season, and came away marveling at the player she has become.

“Honestly, her consistency with her shot really surprised me because I don’t get to see her play as much as I’d like to because I’m away at school, but her consistency with her shots on goal really, honestly surprised me, and impressed me,” Kristen Manski said. “When

I watched her games this season, I knew she was always a quick midfielder, and I never really had thought of her as a forward, but seeing her able to put shots on frame from so far out from goal with such consistency really, really impressed me. … I was almost a little jealous even though my position is so different.”

Older sisters Kristen Manski and Lisa Manski preceded Kelly in the North Stars’ program. Lisa Manski was a senior on last year’s North team that finished as Class 3A state runners-up; this year, North fell to Barrington in a supersectional.

Manski recently won the “Coach’s Award” that Vostal designates to the player that made a major impact both on North’s team and also on her family, from a character standpoint, an award that each of her sisters also nabbed during their North careers.

While Manski is tight with her older siblings, she never was tempted to follow Kristen in net as a goalkeeper.

That would have left her with way too much unburned energy at the end of a match.

“I think that could be it,” Manski said. “Too much standing around.”

Kane’s cool, level-headed approach might have kept the Royals from unraveling during that regional final, when Rosary surrendered a 1-0 lead with only 1:20 left in regulation, sending the match to overtime.

A Quincy Kellett goal earned the Royals the regional title in double OT, and an eventual date in the Freeport Sectional semifinals against Prairie Ridge, which ended Rosary’s season. Kellett said Kane did most of her handson coaching at practices and during halftime, maintaining a calming influence during play.

Given that Rosary was smaller than most of its opponents, Kane preached a finesse brand of soccer based on speed and precise passing. She said

the Royals didn’t want to “get into those physical battles because we knew we probably wouldn’t win if we had to play games that way.”

The continued development of young standouts such as defender Maria Witte and Kellett – both sophomores – was among the highlights of the season for Kane.

“With last year, I think the play of some of those strong freshmen kind of surprised teams,” Kane said. “We had that advantage last year, and this year, helping those girls to still be successful even though other teams were more aware of them [was a challenge].”

Kane spent the initial stages of the summer working toward lining up a new teaching

position that she hoped would allow her to continue her soccer coaching career. Her final Rosary team went 15-4-3, giving Kane a 33-10-3 mark for her two varsity seasons, both of which included regional titles.

Kane retains a strong relationship with longtime Rosary athletic director Mary Lou Kunold, who said she would have liked to retain Kane if she had her druthers. But Kane instead will seek to apply the coaching lessons she learned at Rosary elsewhere.

“Even though we wanted to work hard and be successful, you still have to allow them to have fun and enjoy playing because when you take that away, they’re not going to achieve,” Kane said.

Kristy Kane’s tenure at Rosary ended sooner than she envisioned, but the soft-spoken coach’s team made a loud statement for her on the way out.

The Royals upended defending 2A state champion St. Francis in their regular-season finale to win the Suburban Christian Conference, and went on to win a Class 2A regional championship, earning the second-year varsity coach Kane County Chronicle Coach of the Year honors on her way out the door.

Kane was not asked back in her English teaching position at the school, contributing to an emotionally charged back-

drop to the end of the season.

The death of former Rosary assistant coach Peter Eastwood, who passed away in early May, also became emotional ammunition for the Royals as the season wound down.

Rosary senior Taylor Gibson, who lauded Kane’s influence both in the classroom and on the soccer field, recalled how gratifying it was to see Kane celebrate after Rosary’s double-overtime win against Kaneland to win the IHSA Class 2A Rochelle Regional championship.

“She was beaming,” Gibson said. “I can’t even describe it. … That just made it all worth it because we knew we were playing for two of the best coaches that we’ve ever played for.”

Area schools headed to Chicago Catholic League Phillies draft East grad in 26th round Marmion, Aurora Christian, St. Francis, Montini and Marian Central are set to merge from the dissolving Suburban Christian Conference into the Chicago Catholic League in football and boys soccer beginning in the 2014-15 school year.

While athletic directors still must determine landing spots for other sports, consider the move a major relief given the events of May 2, when seven schools announced plans to leave the SCC for the Metro Suburban Conference after 2013-14.

“It’s going to be kind of cool playing some of the schools in the new league,” Marmion athletic director Joe Chivari said. “Being in the west ’burbs, we hear of all these big-name schools around Chicago, and now some of those big-name

The addition will prompt the creation of four fiveteam divisions in football – Blue, Green, White and Red. Marmion will join Fenwick, Marian Central, Montini and St. Francis in the Green.

Aurora Christian heads to the White to compete with Bishop McNamara, De La Salle, St. Ignatius and St. Lawrence.

Soccer divisional alignments will be announced at a later date, “but will be based on geography and parity” per a news release.

Girls programs likely will compete in the Girls Catholic Athletic Conference.

“We know we’re going to be traveling a lot more, but that’s I think a minor [trade-off] considering the quality conference that we’ll be participating in,” Chivari said. “I think we got the better end of this deal.”

Speaking on behalf of the other SCC athletic directors, Chivari said “we haven’t really nailed it down what we want to do” with other sports.

Marmion, Aurora Christian, St. Francis, Montini and Marian Central have been invited to participate in conference tournaments, but are not part of regular-season scheduling at present.

“I would like to think we’ll [decide] all as one,” Chivari said. “There’s a remote possibility a school would just do it on their own with the CCL in a particular sport, but hard to say.”

One draftee attended Glenbard North, but his family since has relocated to Geneva.

But wait, there’s more about Los Angeles Angels pickup Brian Loconsole, who was selected Saturday in the 20th round (607th overall).

A right-hander out of Western Illinois, the 6-foot-2, 215-pound Loconsole played football at Glenbard North, but not baseball.

A standout season at Moraine Valley Community College Chris Burgess earned him a look from the Leathernecks, who gradually increased his workload after Loconsole redshirted as a sophomore in 2010.

Loconsole led Western Illinois with 22 appearances this past spring, finishing 3-2 with a 2.86 ERA while striking out 23 in 28⅓ in-

nings.

He also had a team-record nine saves.

Loconsole’s mother said Loconsole expects to sign with the Angels soon.

The Philadelphia Phillies, meanwhile, selected former St. Charles East righty Chris Burgess in the 26th round, 781st overall.

Burgess, now with Oklahoma Christian, was pitching with Black Hawk College when Tampa Bay picked him in the 30th round in 2011.

JOLIET – Obviously, the St. Charles East baseball team would have preferred to join the school’s softball team in playing for a state championship Saturday rather than appearing in the IHSA Class 4A third-place game at Silver Cross Field.

But starting pitcher Matt Starai and the Saints found motivation for their encounter with Neuqua Valley from a 4-0 loss they suffered at the hands of the Wildcats a month ago.

Neuqua Valley (30-11) handed Starai (11-1) his only loss of the season in that Upstate Eight Conference crossover game.

“They definitely got a hold of me the first time and I wanted to come out and compete today and show them I was better than that,” Starai said. “I might not have had my best stuff, but I wanted to go out there and compete and give us a chance to take third.”

In that earlier meeting, Wildcats senior Cody Coll shut the Saints out on two hits.

This time, East made sure it backed up Starai with plenty of offense, scoring six runs in the first three innings en route to a 6-4 victory.

The key inning was the second. After Neuqua Valley scored a pair of unearned runs off Starai in the top of the frame, the Saints struck for four runs off Wildcat southpaw Danny Mokrzycki (8-1). With one out, Mokrzycki walked the bases loaded. Nicholas Erickson then lashed a double just inside the bag at first to score a pair of runs and, one out later, Joe Hoscheit followed with a single to center to plate two more. “[Mokrzycki] was having a little bit of control issues that inning and everyone was

kept going and going. Troy Dykhuis came in there and did a real nice job to finish up those last two innings.”

Dykhuis gave up a run in the seventh as the Wildcats managed to get the tying run on base, but he struck out Butler to end the game. It was his fourth strikeout.

He allowed three hits and walked none.

Erickson and Hoscheit each had a pair of hits for the Saints (28-12), and Anthony Sciarrino picked up an RBI with a squeeze bunt in the third.

Hoscheit was 5 for 7 at the plate in the state tournament to raise his team-leading batting average to .375.

“It’s a weird feeling,” Hoscheit said when asked for his thoughts on playing for St. Charles East for the last time before going on to play at Northwestern. “It hasn’t really sunk in yet. I was just glad we could go out on top with a win.”

Starai echoed those sentiments.

“We had a great season,” he said. “It’s great to end it on a great note, coming down to state and ending it on a win.

Not too many [players] get to say they ended their career on a win.”

Not like this, though.

Minooka slugged the Saints out of EastSide Centre with a record-setting offensive display, ending the championship showdown early with a 14-3 mercy-rule triumph in six innings.

“I thought [Friday] was going to be low scoring like it was, and I thought [Saturday] was going to be a slugfest based on what they had done and who they had beat,” Horan said.

The Indians, it turned out, did enough slugging for both teams.

Minooka (23-8) established new Class 4A state title game benchmarks for runs, hits (19) and home runs (three). The final homer, a three-run shot by leadoff hitter Rachel May in the bottom of the sixth, ended the game.

Both teams’ starting pitchers struggled early, but the similarities stopped there.

Minooka regularly rotates two pitchers, and Indians coach Mark Brown replaced starter Jackie Lilek with Sara Novak to start the third inning after the Saints evened the score at 3

with a three-run top of the second.

Novak retired all 12 Saints she faced on the evening.

“Every time you get a new pitcher, it’s a different swing on it,” said East shortstop Lexi Perez, whose RBI single tied the game in the second inning. “I could see the girls were getting a little bit too out in front of it. She was pitching inside instead of outside which we were having before, so we just had to switch and make the adjustment.”

There was no relief for struggling Saints junior pitcher Haley Beno.

Beno (22-5), who limited powerhouse Barrington to five singles in the state semifinal, couldn’t replicate her form against the Indians.

Minooka coach Mark Brown said he was “shocked” the Saints didn’t change pitchers.

Horan said ,“We just didn’t have Alex (Latoria) warmed up.”

“Probably would have gone to her, but hey, Haley brought us here,” Horan said. “She was going to finish this.”

Beno acknowledged she didn’t feel strong in the circle but said it was just normal soreness pitching back-to-back games.

“I knew coming into this game it wasn’t going to be an easy game,” said Beno, one of several teary Saints during the postgame ceremony. “I tried my best to stay focused and hit my spots.”

JOLIET – There weren’t many smiles on the faces of St. Francis baseball players after dropping Saturday’s IHSA Class 3A state championship game to Joliet Catholic, 5-0, at Joliet’s Silver Cross Field.

A glance at two critical stats would provide the reason for the long faces.

The Hilltoppers scored five runs in the fourth inning off St. Francis starter Jason Sullivan (8-2), only two of which were earned. The Spartans also left 10 runners on base against Joliet Catholic starter Nick Dalesandro (7-2).

It all added up to a tough final day of the season for the Spartans, who were gracious in defeat despite the loss.

“We really did a great job, but we just fell apart in that one inning,” St. Francis catcher Brett Jungles said. “We had to come in and play good, clean defense to win a state title. We had a little lapse – four errors – but we’re all happy to be in this position. It’s a lot better than losing in the regional semifinal or something.”

The inning Jungles alluded to was the Hilltoppers’ fourth, in which a harmless bunt opened up the floodgates for Joliet Catholic (25-14).

Sullivan opened the fourth by allowing a leadoff single to Aaron Markley before Chris Tschida walked to set up a sacrifice bunt situation for Dalesandro. Dalesandro did his job, but the ball was close enough to home plate that Jungles ran into the Joliet Catholic pitcher going after the ball. After getting untangled, Jungles unsuccessfully tried to tag Dalesandro before uncorking a throw to first that sailed into right field. Markley raced around to score from second for the first run.

“First I thought the ball hit him out of the box because he wasn’t running. Then I got up to get the ball and he ran into me, which I thought would be interference,” Jungles said.

“Then I thought I got him in

the back of the jersey, which I guess I missed. Then I took a bad angle – mental error – and I made a bad throw. I knew it opened up the inning, but I had to forget about it and move on.”

The play scored the first of five runs in the inning, only one of which came on a hit.

Sullivan threw a wild pitch, scoring Tschida, before Dalesandro beat Tim Zettinger’s throw home to give the Hilltoppers a 4-0 lead. One batter later, John Kalisik ripped an opposite-field RBI triple to score the final run of the inning.

“We made a couple of defensive mistakes, those things happen,” St. Francis coach Rich Janor said. “Obviously their only scoring all game came in that inning. It was a bad inning, and we never recovered from it.”

What may have hurt worse for St. Francis (25-12) was leaving 10 runners on base. Right before the Hilltoppers’ explosion, the Spartans had runners at second and third with one out. But, as he did on four other occasions, Dalesandro worked out of the jam, striking out Chris Smith and pinch hitter T.J. Jackson to end the threat.

Dalesandro scattered seven hits in the complete game effort while striking out nine Spartans. The sophomore mixed an 86 to 89 mph fastball with a curveball and changeup that had St. Francis off balance for much of the game.

Dalesandro struck out the side in the final inning to set off a raucous celebration in front of 2,891 fans – many of whom made the short trip to see the Hilltoppers claim their third state title in program history.

“I just tried to gain momentum – and that goes to my defense,” Dalesandro said.

“Sometimes I pitched backwards and would start with two curveballs in a row. Sometimes I would throw two fastballs in a row. I never played in front of this big a crowd before and they gave me all the power in the world.”

A: Hester W. Pillsbury (18621951) was a decorator who worked at Roseville and Weller, both Ohio potteries. Roseville Pottery was organized in Roseville, Ohio, in 1890 and opened a plant in nearby Zanesville in 1898. Roseville made pottery until 1954. Weller Pottery started out in Fultonham, Ohio, moved to Zanesville in 1882 and closed in 1948. Hester Pillsbury began working in about 1904 and worked at Weller after 1918. A tile picture like yours, made up of 24 signed tiles, could be worth $1,000 or more. *** Q: I am interested in figuring out the value of a vintage Rolls Razor set called “The Traveler.” It includes a travel box and a razor with disassembled handles and other parts. The back of the razor says it’s “Made in England.”

A: Rolls Razor, Ltd., of London was in business from the 1920s into the early 1950s. It made several razor models that used “permanent blades” rather than disposables.

A: Of course. Collectors in the United States and Canada started looking at their own countries after soldiers saw all the antiques in Europe during World War II. The first books and publications about collecting in the United States concentrated on English porcelains and furniture, Georgian silver, prints, Staffordshire figures and Chippendale furniture that could have been made in many countries.

American pieces were wanted by very few. Our trip to Eastern Canada from Ohio in the late 1950s was disappointing because we hoped to see Canadian things in antiques shops. We found a few in Nova Scotia selling early Canadian furniture, but shops in the large cities looked like ours -they were filled with mainly English or Asian pieces. But by the 1970s, Canadians had become interested in their own antiques and history and there were Canadian publications and shows. Brooklin Pottery was founded in 1952 by Theo and Susan Harlander. They had emigrated from Germany. Some of their best-known studio pottery is made with incised pictures of people and geometric designs in pale earthtones. The business was closed by 1987.

Political slogans and pictures from the past can sometimes be confusing because modern times suggest a different meaning. In the 1900 U.S. presidential campaign, William McKinley used the slogans “Protection and Prosperity” and “Four more years of the full dinner pail.” His campaign often pictured a workman’s lunchbox as a symbol of jobs. One of his most famous buttons, if first seen today, would startle a 2013 voter. The button shows a strange boxlike container -the lunch pail of the day. Inside the pail is a building with smoke pouring from the smokestacks and the words: “Do you smoke? Yes, since 1896.” The smoking chimneys on the building represent work being done inside, just as the lunch pail means jobs. Today the smoke could be misinterpreted as pollution, and the answer given to “Do you smoke?” would suggest a health problem. The rare button sold for $1,948 at a recent Hake’s Auction.

It’s a reminder that both language and symbols can change with time and events, so collectors should be careful

On the scale of a small city, Javits Center hosts 30,000-plus participants from around the world who convene to talk, walk, sleep, eat, drink and read all things book related. BookExpo America appeals to a range of book-oriented interests. Participants include vendors who service the book industry (ranging from suppliers of hot chocolate to printers to publicists), publishers, editors, agents, bookstore owners and managers, booksellers, librarians, authors, media, consumers and a large book blogger contingent.

To meet the needs of this diverse group searching for signs of hope in the numbers, trends and anecdotes, BEA offers large author breakfasts hosted by celebrity authors like Chelsea Handler, author stages where authors engage in discussions with other authors, book signings, publisher and vendor booths, and numerous educational panels that run concurrently.

In the evenings, parties hosted by publishers pop up around the city. Free books and swag (pens, key chains, bookmarks and more), opportunities to meet favorite authors, bone-crushing crowds, and celebrity sightings ramp up the intensity. This year BookExpo America (BEA), which ran from May 29 to June 1, had a markedly more upbeat feel to it.

Says Michael Pietsch, CEO of the Hachette Book Group: “This is the most exhilarating time in our business. We’re here, the book business is strong and there’s a big sigh of relief this year. Yes. There’s a path forward. Let’s go.”

Publishers Weekly, which publishes daily during the expo, wrote that “there was a consensus that a bit of stability has returned to the book publishing industry.”

PW attributes the stability, in part, to a slowdown in the rate of change, “giving publishers and booksellers a chance to make plans for the future.”

In a big, trend-sensi-

tive event like this, the word “buzz” is invoked as regularly as the words Dan Brown or “Fifty Shades of Grey.” The buzz, as real as the cicadas currently serenading the outer boroughs, is a happy sound this year.

“Last year’s BEA was a lot of gloom and doom about the future of printed books,” says Cheshire Public Library social media coordinator Louise LeClaire. “I did feel this year the tone was slightly more optimistic. The publishing world has to learn to make peace with the electronic media, especially when it comes to library lending.

I’m not worried about books. If anything, the advent of e-books has people reading more.”

Librarians, book bloggers and editors top the scale of those most passionate and expressive at BEA. Editors demonstrate their love of books and their gift

for articulating the details of that love beautifully in the annual BEA Editors’ Buzz. BEA selects what it suspects will be “the fall’s biggest potential breakout releases.”

Each editor then pitches her acquisition to the hundreds of participants in attendance, selling everyone. Mass pandemonium naturally follows when the participants pour out of the cavernous space and throng to the tables stacked high with all of the books described. More often than not, these books are likely to receive a higher percentage of the publicists’ time and we will indeed hear about them this fall.

Some attendees have learned the ropes of what can be a vastly overwhelming experience. Librarian Sue Hartley makes lists, uses the expo app, and consults the daily PW publication to stay on top of changing events.

“BEA is a book lovers’ dream come true,” she says.

“I think there are a lot of people like myself that are author groupies. I love seeing Jan Brett and Patricia Pollacco and letting them know how much my patrons enjoy their books.”

Says librarian Louis LeClaire, “I admire good writing, and the people that do it well. They ... have brought me countless hours of enjoyment, made me look at things I knew in a new way, opened my mind to things I didn’t know before.

That’s a superstar to me!”

LeClaire and Harley, who both take time off from work and pay their own way in order to attend, have BEA down to a science.

They may not be joking when they say they’re considering making a YouTube instructional video on how to get the most out of BEA.

‘Mindful eating’ teaches you to stop before you overeat Dear Doctor K: I recently heard someone discuss “mindful eating” as a weight-loss strategy. Could that help me lose weight?

Dear Reader: Does this sound familiar? You’re at your computer, facing a wall of emails. After composing a reply, you hit “send” and reach for the bulging turkey wrap on your desk, and then the bag of chips, washed down by a soda (sugar-free, or not). You continue to eat, chewing while glancing at the screen. Before you know it, you’ve finished lunch without even noticing it. That’s not mindful eating.

Mindful eating is a slower, more thoughtful way of eating.

It’s based on the Buddhist concept of mindfulness, which involves being fully aware of what is happening within and around you at the moment. A small yet growing body of research suggests that mindful eating could help with weight problems and aid people in making more healthful food choices.

Applied to eating, mindfulness includes noticing the colors, smells, flavors and textures of food. It involves chewing slowly and getting rid of distractions such as TV or reading – or email.

It introduces a “moment of choice” between the urge to eat and actually eating. It gives you the chance to ask yourself, “Am I really hungry?” and to make the decision to do something else, like reading or taking a walk, if you’re not. By slowing down your meals, mindful eating also gives you the opportunity to recognize that you’re full before you’ve overeaten.

That’s particularly important. About 15 to 20 minutes after you start to eat, your body starts to send signals to your brain that you’re full – but only after 15 to 20 minutes, no matter how large the meal. And a person can easily eat a 3,000-calorie meal in 15 to 20 minutes.

So deliberately making a meal go slowly, and being willing to quit when you feel full and save the leftovers, is a potent aid to weight loss.

If you want to give mindful

eating a try, start gradually.

Eat one meal a day or week in a slower, more attentive manner.

Here are some tips that may help you get started: • Set your kitchen timer for 20 minutes. Take that time to eat a normal-sized meal.

• Try eating with your non-dominant hand. If you’re a righty, hold your fork in your left hand.

• Use chopsticks if you don’t normally use them.

• Eat silently for five minutes. Think about what it took to produce that meal, from the sun’s rays to the farmer to the grocer to the cook.

• Take small bites and chew well.

Eating healthy is not just about maintaining a healthy weight. The kind of calories, as well as the number of calories, matter. I hope some of these tips will help you limit the number of calories. In other columns, I’ll describe the healthiest calories.

Dear parents: Are you strict or lenient when it comes to your teen smoking or not smoking?

A study by Dartmouth Medical School revealed some interesting findings on the influence of parents on whether their child does or does not smoke.

Researchers surveyed 372 rural Vermont young people in grades four through 11 who had never smoked. Two years later, they were re-questioned about their parents’ views on smoking, whether their friends smoked and whether they had started smoking.

Of those surveyed, 284 initially said their parents disapproved of their smoking and 19 percent became established smokers in the two years. By contrast, of the remaining young people who initially said their parents were lenient about smoking, 27 percent ended up becoming smokers.

The study showed that parents do play a big role in their children staying tobacco-free.

Even parents who smoked, but who set nonsmoking expectations with their children, had just as much influence as parents who were tobacco-free.

While other research has shown that peer pressure has a major influence on a teen’s behavior, this study, according to National Institute on Drug Abuse, also found that strong parental influence often overpowers peer pressure when it comes to smoking.

Dear Abby: I have read your column for as long as I can remember. My husband died from a drug overdose, and I am a widow at 32. He was a good man before the drugs, but he wouldn’t stop and I was helpless to intervene. I am now raising our two sons alone.

My problem is my brother is headed down the same road, and I don’t know how to help him. I don’t have the money to send him to rehab, and he doesn’t think he has a problem. He has lost his job, has no vehicle and is losing what friends he has left.

I don’t want to turn my back on him or lose him the way I lost my husband. I know he needs rehab or therapy, but with the lack of funds I don’t know where to turn.

Furthermore, how do I explain this to my 9- and 10-year-old sons?

At the bridge table, do not judge a deal totally from your first glance; give it a second look to check that you have not missed something. So, have a second slice of toast this morning. South is in four spades. West leads the heart king and continues with the heart queen. How should declarer plan the play?

Pre-empts are a pain. South’s sequence shows a very strong four-spade bid, because an immediate four-spade overcall would also be strong. When you intervene over a pre-empt, assume your partner has six or seven points and base your actions appropriately. So, jumping straight to four spades suggests around a working 20-count. This sequence promises more. Here, of course, North couldn’t care less!

South has nine top tricks: six spades, one diamond and two clubs. At first glance, he needs the club finesse to work. However, there is a second chance – diamonds might break 3-3.

After ruffing the second heart, declarer should cash the spade ace, then play the diamond ace and another diamond.

Suppose East wins and leads a third heart. Declarer ruffs high and plays another diamond.

In a moment, South will draw trumps ending with dummy’s spade 10 and cash the high diamond. But note that if diamonds had split 4-2, the club finesse would still have been available.
