ast week, I had a chance to catch up with Kaneland High School student Samantha Garcia during one of her physical therapy sessions at Rush-Copley Medical Center in Aurora. Samantha was severely injured last summer in a car accident.

When I first met Samantha, it was in the fall and she had just been named homecoming queen. She had a smile on her face as she chatted with her friends around the kitchen table of her Montgomery home, even though I’m sure she still was in a lot of pain.

This time, Samantha still had a smile on her face as she worked hard on her balance and walking skills in order to walk across the stage for her commencement ceremony – something graduates everywhere took for granted, just simply walking across the stage. I’m

so glad her dream did come true, and she walked across that stage – without a cane – to receive her diploma.

I love stories with happy outcomes, and I know Samantha will continue to set goals for herself and reach them.

Investigation begins after accidental shooting

By BRENDA SCHORY bschory@shawmedia.com BLACKBERRY TOWNSHIP – The accidental discharge of a live round and the resulting 10 injured this week at the St. Charles Sportsmen’s Club prompted an internal investigation, club President Mark Creedon said.

“I was not present for the incident,” said Creedon, a Batavia resident. “The club will investigate, and at that time, we will have the facts and make a determination of how to proceed at that time.”

The private club at 44W471 Keslinger Road, Blackberry Township, has about 1,300 members, Creedon said, as well as youth teams that practice and compete.

“One thing that is good is there were no permanent injuries – that is the paramount thing here,” Creedon said.

Kane County Sheriff’s Lt. Pat Gengler said the police investigation was closed, as officials determined the shooting was accidental and no charges

According to a sheriff’s report obtained Thursday through the Freedom of Information Act, the club member who accidentally discharged his gun was William Askwith, 69, of St. Charles. He told police he “pointed the gun at the floor and pulled the trigger, at which point a live .12-gauge round went off and struck the floor,” according to the report.

Askwith had finished shooting on the range and came into the clubhouse about 7:30 p.m., according to the report.

“He opened the breach on his Baretta .12-gauge, lever-action shotgun and intended to insert a ‘snap cap’ into the weapon … Askwith explained that a snap cap is an inert round that is placed in the chamber of the weapon before the trigger is pulled to keep the firing pin from getting damaged,” the report stated.

Askwith told sheriff’s depu-

ties that he did not know there was a live round in the weapon. When the buckshot from the live round hit the floor, 10 people in the clubhouse were hit with bits of the ricocheting discharge, police said.

The three taken to Delnor Hospital in Geneva were Joseph C. Bopp of West Chicago, Michael A. Maroscia of Somonauk and a 14-year-old boy from Geneva. All were treated and released, police said. Maroscia would not comment.

Bopp did not have a listed phone number and could not be reached.

Pascale Rapp, 44 and James Harris, 40, were among the six who were treated at the scene, though police did not release their hometowns. Neither had listed phone numbers.

Four male juveniles were treated at the scene, a 9-yearold from West Chicago, a 17-year-old from Elburn, and two other boys aged 11 and 15, but police did not know what

towns they were from.

Askwith was driven to Delnor, where he was treated and released. Askwith did not return a voicemail message left at his home.

John Wilbur, 19, of Geneva, said he was shooting on the range with a youth league when the accidental discharge occurred.

“I was actually outside the clubhouse,” said Wilbur, a sophomore studying mechanical engineering at Waubonsee Community College. “A lady came out of the clubhouse and said, ‘A firearm went off in the club, everybody be careful. If you’re out, stay out; if you’re in, stay in.’”

Wilbur said he witnessed a few of the injuries.

“They were just minor; nobody was hit in the face,” Wilbur said. “They were little shots half the size of a BB, and very few penetrated the skin.

They were all ricochets – off the floor, off the walls. A cou-

ple were in the chest, the back, arms and legs … paramedics removed them with tweezers.

They could have used their fingers, but they used tweezers to be careful.”

Wilbur said the artificial shell or snap cap looks like a live shell, as they are the same color and shape.

“They are basically an artificial shell used to release the pressure of the spring when storing the gun,” Wilbur said.

“Now, they mainly make them in a see-through plastic and they are a shorter length than a shell.”

Wilbur said Askwith is distraught about what happened.

“He feels the worst about it.

[Askwith] is one of the nicest people I know, a great guy,” Wilbur said.

Driver charged Petition drive ongoing in STC crash for disabled services tax GENEVA

ST. CHARLES – Six people were taken to Delnor Hospital Thursday afternoon after a motorist rear-ended another vehicle on the city’s far west side, St. Charles Police Department spokesman Paul McCurtain said.

None of the injuries were life-threatening, he said.

Police were called to Route 64 just west of Peck Road in St. Charles at about 12:49 p.m.

A 2010 Chevrolet Cobalt driven by Genevieve Haasis ran into a 2003 Ford Excursion, which then hit a 2013 Chevrolet Malibu, McCurtain said. He said the SUV,

which had two occupants, and a Malibu, which had one occupant, were stopped facing east.

Haasis, 19, of the 40W800 block of Bending Lane, Elgin, was charged with failure to reduce speed to avoid an accident and failure to secure her passengers with a seat belt, McCurtain said, noting one of her three passengers was not wearing a seat belt.

Six people were taken to Delnor Hospital in Geneva, McCurtain said. Two were treated and released, he said, and four still were being treated late Thursday afternoon.

Most officers were clearing the scene by 1:50 p.m., he said.

bschory@shawmedia.com GENEVA – Last spring’s failed attempt to put a county-wide referendum on the ballot to aid people with disabilities has not stopped supporters from proceeding with their petitions to place the question on the March 18, 2014, general primary ballot.

Charles Miles, a member of the Geneva Mental Health Board and an advocate for people with disabilities, said supporters still are collecting petitions toward their required goal of 19,000 signatures, 10 percent of those who voted in the last presidential election.

Miles spoke to the Geneva City Council this week to draw attention to their continued efforts to get funding for more than 20,000 Kane residents with disabilities.

“I have a daughter, Emma, 21 years old with developmental disabilities,” Miles said. “I want people who watch this to understand a little bit more about the support we need in order to make

The referendum seeks a 0.1 percent property tax that would raise about $12 million per year to provide disability services such as housing, advocacy, job coaching, transportation and support with daily living.

The increase would cost an additional $55 in property taxes for a house valued at $182,000, Miles said.

Miles said Show We Care Kane seeks to provide local funding support for children and adults born with a developmental disability, such as with Down syndrome, autism or intellectual disability, defined as those with an IQ of less than 70.

“A lot of these people don’t have the ability to care for themselves,” Miles said.

“They truly are the most needy within our communi-

ty and most deserving of our help.”

About 10,000 county residents will need help all their lives, and another 10,000 will need help occasionally, he said.

Miles said volunteers and supporters have collected about 15,000 signatures, as the ones they gathered last fall are still viable to use toward getting the question on the spring ballot.

Although the Kane County Board could have put the question on the ballot, its Executive Committee voted it down, prompting supporters to continue collecting signatures.

Miles urged aldermen to sign a petition and to pass one – just to get it on the ballot “and let our voices be heard.”

If it passes Kane would join 14 other Illinois counties that also created 708 boards to fund services for the developmentally disabled.

over 10 years, to help finance the project.

Those bonds could be backed by the county’s Public Safety Sales Tax, according to a proposal submitted by the county’s finance department.

The County Board has committed about $800,000 to $900,000 a year from the Public Safety Sales Tax to the project. The county also is expected to transfer $1.45 million from that sales tax fund to the project this year.

The county’s Chief Information Officer Roger Fahnestock told the committee that the county likely would not know the project’s actual price until bids from vendors arrive in late August.

He said he expected the bidding process to be “competitive,” because more than a dozen vendors that could seek the county’s business.

The committee next will meet June 20, when it is expected to hear from the county’s bond advisers on the possible bond sale.

GENEVA – The officials overseeing Kane County’s court system don’t yet know how much it will cost the county to upgrade the computer systems supporting the county’s courts and related offices.

Neither has it yet been determined how much the county is willing to spend.

But county officials appear to be leaning toward an answer on how to pay for the project of installing a new electronic case management system: Issuing bonds backed by money from an existing countywide sales tax intended to provide funding for Kane’s criminal justice system.

Kane County officials for years have discussed improving the county’s courts-related computer software to allow the various offices serving the courts to better share the documents that circulate whenever a person is charged with a crime or files suit.

Estimates discussed in 2011 pegged the cost of the project at about $12 million.

In more recent months, officials, including the county’s chief judge, state’s attorney, clerk of the circuit court and public defender, among oth-

ers, have urged a more aggressive approach to the problem, because they say the situation has worsened, costing taxpayers money.

In late May, the county’s Judicial and Public Safety Technology Task Force continued to push the project forward, sending on to the County Board a recommendation to allow the county’s Information Technology Department to hire four new professionals to facilitate the creation of the new system.

The task force also recommended using money from the county’s existing Public Safety Sales Tax to pay for those workers.

A special finance subcommittee of the technology task force Thursday discussed the next steps in assembling financing for the case management system project.

The subcommittee in cluded Kane County Board Chairman Chris Lauzen, Circuit Clerk Tom Hartwell, County Board members John Hoscheit, R-St. Charles, and Ron Ford, D-Aurora, and Kane County Judge F. Keith Brown.

Former North Aurora trustee, Max Herwig, dies at age 67

eschelkopf@shawmedia.com NORTH AURORA – Longtime North Aurora village trustee Max Herwig is being remembered for his love of North Aurora.

“He really cared about North Aurora,” North Aurora Fire Chief Steve Miller said Thursday. “I just liked his desire to serve. He stepped right up to the plate and helped where he could.”

Herwig, of North Aurora, died suddenly Tuesday at Edward Hospital in Naperville.

He was 67.

He was a North Aurora trustee for more than 10 years, and was interim village president from December 2004 until April 2005, when Mark Ruby stepped down from the post after moving from the village.

Herwig also was chairman of the North Aurora Days Committee for many years.

The committee is in charge of organizing the summer festival.

Miller and Herwig had worked together in organizing North Aurora Days.

“He would go over and above for North Aurora Days, and the Village Board,” Miller said.

North Aurora Village Trustee Mark Gaffino served with Herwig on the board.

“I spent four years sitting next to him at Village Board meetings,” Gaffino said. “He gave good advice.”

Gaffino, who has been the North Aurora Days Committee chairman for the past few years, saw Herwig last week at a committee meeting.

“He will be missed,” Gaffino said. “He loved North Aurora like the rest of us.”

North Aurora Village President Dale Berman was a longtime neighbor of Herwig, and had known him since the 1960s.

“It’s a shame,” Berman said. “He was a good volunteer. He worked hard.”

Herwig also had a love for animals. He was a volunteer with Homes for Endangered and Lost Pets. He also served on the board of directors for the Fox Valley Wildlife Center in Elburn and maintained the facility.

“His love for animals was overwhelming,” said Andrea Krueger, a fellow Fox Valley Wildlife Center board member.

• Police on Friday, May 31, responded to a creak near the Congregational United Church of Christ at LaFox and Fox Mill roads in Campton Hills. A black, poodle-type dog reportedly jumped off a concrete barrier into the creek and was shivering in the fast current. It had no collar or tags but wore remains of a cloth bandana. After police found no identifying chip on the dog, an officer took it to Kane County Animal Control because it appeared to be suffering from hypothermia.

8OBITUARIES MAX CHARLES HERWIG NORTH AURORA – Max Charles Herwig, 67, of North Aurora, passed away suddenly Tuesday, June 4, 2013, at Edward Hospital in Naperville.

He was born Jan. 11, 1946, in Aurora, the son of Harold and Grace (Barr) Herwig. Max was united in marriage to Jacqueline Fohn on June 25, 1966, in Aurora.

Together, they raised a loving family, making their children and grandchildren their top priority.

As a man of faith, Max served at Union Congregational Church in North Aurora for 32 years and has called Batavia Covenant Church home for the past 12 years. He also took great pleasure in serving the community of North Aurora.

He was honored to serve as a North Aurora village trustee for more than 10 years, as well as interim mayor. Max found great joy in the preparation for the North Aurora Days Festivals.

Max enjoyed his career as a mechanical engineer, starting out at Western Electric and continuing through Bell Labs and AT&T until his retirement in 1999. After retiring, he went to work as an account manager with IBM at Lucent Technology until 2003. He obtained his real estate license in 2000 and enjoyed buying and rehabbing homes until 2005, when he decided to start his own home repair business. While staying

active with his business, Max also enjoyed working part time for Kettley Realty in Batavia. In his spare time, Max loved fishing, camping and boating.

Max had a genuine gift and passion for helping others and volunteered for numerous organizations all over Kane County. He led the Fox Valley Cable Consortium, volunteered at Goodwin Elementary School, the Home for Endangered and Lost Pets (HELP) and Fox Valley Habitat for Humanity. Near and dear to his heart was the Fox Valley Wildlife Center in Elburn, where he served on the board of directors and maintained the facility.

Max will be deeply missed by his loving family, many friends and special pets, Daisy, Ruby and Mishy. He is survived by his wife, Jackie of North Aurora; a daughter, Robin (David) Fisher of North Aurora; a son, Max Herwig (Alex Sperfeld) of Chicago; three grandchildren, Grace, Lily and Jack Fisher; one sister, Gail Thornton; his father-in-law, Jack Fohn; a brother-in-law, Steven (Margaret) Fohn; and many nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by his parents.

The visitation will be from 3 to 7 p.m. Sunday, June 9, at Moss Family Funeral Home, 209 S. Batavia Ave. (Route 31 and Main Street), Batavia.

Funeral services will be at 11 a.m. Monday, June 10, at Batavia Covenant Church, 1314 Main St., Batavia. A private interment will be at West Batavia Cemetery in Batavia.

She was born Dec. 12, 1951, in Chicago, the daughter of Leslie and Lorraine (Partacz) Lee. Bonnie was a wonderful mother, grandmother and sister. She had an incredible knack for making things beautiful. She was an amazing cook and had an effortless flair for gardening and flower arranging. She was the owner and main designer of Glenrose store in Batavia. For many years, Bonnie was self employed as a personal assistant and household manager.

She also enjoyed relaxing at the beach. Her greatest joy, however, was spending time with her family and friends.

She is survived by her children, Shelly Soto of Florida, Joseph Lee Soto of Elburn and Robin Soto of California; grandchildren, Kailer, Ella and Falyn Soto; siblings, Terry Lee, Hal (Terry) Lee, Beverly (Jeff)

She will be dearly missed by all those whose lives she touched.

Residents complain about park’s condition

By ERIC SCHELKOPF eschelkopf@shawmedia.com BATAVIA – Batavia Park District officials said they will work on improving the condition of Levi Newton Park after meeting with residents who had voiced concerns about the park being overrun with weeds and other issues.

Levi Newton Park, which is located in Mill Creek subdivision near Geneva, is maintained by the Batavia Park District.

Batavia Park District Executive Director Allison Niemela and Eric Lacher, the district’s director of parks and properties, met with residents at the park Tuesday.

“We really want to make sure all parks within the Batavia Park District boundaries are the best maintained and manicured parks in the Tri-Cities area,” Niemela said.

Mill Creek South resident Kevin Reszel met with Niemela and Lacher to discuss the concerns. The residents have created a Facebook page, Revive Levi Newton Park.

“The weeds are unsightly,” Reszel said. “They can get as high as a foot. The field is uneven and unsafe for kids to play on. It’s just basic neglect, especially when we see other Batavia parks looking great.”

Niemela said park district officials know the park has soil issues.

“Before this was a park site, it used to be part of an extensive nursery farm,” she said. “There are soil issues that make it extremely difficult to grow healthy grass.

We will be taking soil samples to determine what the issues are.”

Niemela said the park district for the past four years has not done weed control at its parks “for cost-containment purposes.” But weed control has been put back in the park district’s budget starting this year, she said.

“We are working on a contract right now for weed control in all of our parks,”

she said.

Reszel said the meeting with the park officials went

well, but that Mill Creek South residents still plan to voice their concerns at the

ST. CHARLES – A new program by the Downtown St. Charles Partnership that pairs live entertainment with local businesses begins Wednesday with performances by two musicians, the partnership has announced.

Guitarists Jim Perona and Kristin McFadden will be the first musicians to perform as part of STC Live!, a program scheduled for Wednesday and Friday evenings throughout the summer.

Perona will perform from 5 to 7 p.m. Wednesday at First Street Plaza, and McFadden will play at Kimmer’s Ice Cream, 1 Illinois St., St. Charles, from 6:30 to 8:30 p.m.

With cruise nights Tuesdays and Concerts in the Park on Thursdays, the partnership saw a chance to create regular opportunities for people to frequent downtown merchants Wednesdays and Fridays, Executive Director Lynne Schwartz said.

“It’s a great opportunity for people to stop in a new place, hear some entertainment and walk around,” she said, describing it as a new way to experience downtown.

“We’re hopeful that it’s a program that can continue.”

arhodebeck@shawmedia.com ST. CHARLES – Julie Farris, executive director of Pride of the Fox, doesn’t downplay the difficulty her team faced by having only four months to organize this weekend’s 31st annual RiverFest.

Usually, she said, the team will have 11 months.

“Having four months to plan RiverFest has been an incredible challenge,” Farris said. “I am the most proud of my team this year because I had to push them three times harder than I’ve ever done for this project. Every single one of them stepped up and just performed incredibly.”

A series of circumstances resulted in Pride of the Fox and another group, the St. Charles Festival Committee, offering to organize the annual three-day festival. Each asked the city for financial support, and in late January, aldermen picked Pride of the Fox for the job.

Plenty of blame to go around The state legislative session that ended May 31 was an abject failure, one that demands a new approach to solving Illinois’ public pension crisis.

Lawmakers adjourned the spring session without coming to any agreement on a plan to reform the state’s pension systems, which are underfunded by almost $100 billion, a debt that grows by a staggering $17 million each day.

With pension obligations set to consume a fifth of all state revenues in the next year and the state’s credit rating already the lowest of the 50 states, pension reform was the top item on everyone’s agenda for the session. Still, nothing was accomplished.

The blame lies with lawmakers in general and with

the state’s legislative leaders, House Speaker Michael Madigan and Senate President John Cullerton, in particular.

A pair of Chicago Democrats, Madigan and Cullerton could not reach an agreement among their own party members, even though they have comfortable majorities in both houses.

There are others to blame.

If the state had a stronger leader in its highest office – governor – then pension reform already might be done.

Voters are to blame, too. How much longer will Illinois voters continue to elect and send inept leaders to Springfield? It’s clear the Pat Quinn-Madigan-Cullerton trio can’t govern effectively.

Given their failure, it is time for Madigan and Culler-

ton to step aside and allow others to become involved in crafting a workable compromise. More people need to be involved in this process – Republicans, Democrats, taxpayer advocates, even unions – to come up with a compromise solution that can extricate us from this crisis.

The status quo is untenable and benefitting almost no one in Illinois.

It is past time for a solution.

Because Illinois has the lowest credit rating of the 50 states, state taxpayers spend more on interest payments than any other.

The ego-driven approach employed by Madigan and Cullerton this spring has yielded only more embarrassment and financial hardship for our state.

Surviving ‘The List’ – and everything it dictates When my brothers and I were growing up, to help keep order at our Wisconsin vacation cabin, my mother Scotch-taped rules everywhere, signing them, “The Management.”

Above toilets, she posted: “Do not flush anything down except toilet paper. The Management.” My brother Bill, later becoming a writer, showed an early appreciation for clarity when he anonymously (only his handwriting giving him away) scrawled beneath the message, “Anything?!”

When my mother died, so did the annoying scraps of paper. A few years ago, however, my eldest brother resurrected the directives’ spirit by creating and publishing “The List.” Everyone – family or renter – who stays at the cabin

Like a public pool’s rules board, no objections or questions are entertained.

A sampling (from memory): “No. 1: You break it, you fix it or pay to have it fixed.”

“No. 9: “Clean the grounds of ALL litter.” That means every single broken water balloon.

One year we missed a couple.

We received a chastising phone call. We haven’t missed one since then.

Since The List’s publication, the “No Crap” rule (its name revised for family reading) took effect. It works this way: “(Fill in name here), your leather sandals are truly beautiful, but left sitting in the middle of the living room floor, they look like crap.”

By now, you’ve gleaned my ambivalence to The List – while drawing attention to issues needing attention, its voice sounds condescending and authoritarian.

began a home version of The List. Why? Because after several years of empty-nesting while our kids enjoyed college, my wife and I now find butter and eggs abandoned on the counter after someone made breakfast; partially-filled bottles, cans and cups left on tables that one assumes a parent or butler will pick up; and all the bath towels disappearing like a magic act.

So, I wrote: “No. 1: If you take something from the fridge, put it back when finished. No. 2: Dispose of partially-filled bottles, cans … ” “What are you typing?” my daughter asked, walking up behind me. “‘The Home List.’”

“What? You can’t do that!”

“Read it.”

She read it. “You can’t do that!”

“Next: ‘Bath mats and towels are not floor tiles or carpet savers. Hang up after showering.’ You want to add a rule?”

“Thou shalt not make lists,” she probably thought, but said, “Dad, don’t print it. Give us a week.”

“OK. But I’m saving it,” I called after her, although she’d already begun picking up towels, collecting half-empty cans of La Croix and putting the hummus back in the fridge.

of her husband. “If you don’t have symptoms, how do you know to ask to be tested? And when they find it, it is usually Stage 3 or 4.”

Cancer’s stages from 1 to 4 chart the progression and severity of the disease. Geier’s husband of 28 years felt a pain in his side and was diagnosed at Stage 4 in January. He died in May. The other host of the run, Joe Bagnasco, lost his wife, Jackie, in 2005 to esophageal cancer. She was 44. Jackie Bagnasco had reflux, Geier said.

“Screening could mean the difference between life and

death for so many,” Bagnasco said in a statement. “That just fuels our desire to make sure people are informed and get checked in time to save lives.”

In response to the families’ request, Gov. Pat Quinn declared April as Esophageal Cancer Awareness Month in Illinois.

Last year, the run had more than 100 participants and raised about $22,000 for the American Cancer Society. So far this year, about 400 runners have signed up and they expect to raise about $30,000 for the esophageal cancer network, Geier said.

Jan Geier’s daughter, Kayla, 25, took the lead with the run both to honor her father and help others.

“If we can save somebody – that can make this worth it,” Kayla Geier said. “That is the way my dad would have wanted it. It is one of the fastest-growing cancers out there, and the leading cause is acid reflux. In my dad’s memory, it’s important to talk about the critical link between heartburn and cancer.”

The Esophageal Cancer Action Network is a national nonprofit based in Baltimore, founded five years ago by Mindy Mintz Mordecai after her husband died of it in 2008.

“We wanted to support another organization, but there was no one organization focused on the relationship between acid reflux and esophageal cancer,” Mordecai said.

“I was a reporter. I covered health issues. I found out my husband was dying of a disease we could have prevented – if we had known.”

Her husband John was diagnosed with Stage 3 cancer in 2007 and died in 2008 at age 63. However, he did not have symptoms because his heartburn would occur while he was lying down asleep, she said.

The network focuses on awareness with information kits, posters, brochures and wristbands. The website, www.ecan.org, has information and a downloadable guide about the link between heartburn and esophageal cancer.

“Most people with heartburn will not get cancer, but we have no way of knowing who is at risk,” Mordecai said.

“Every 36 minutes, someone dies of it; 17,000 people a year are dying from it. The guide we have available lists eight risk factors and the goal is to prepare people to talk to their doctors about their acid reflux.”

The meeting is a follow up to a recent attempt by Virtual Learning Solutions, a nonprofit organization that sought charter status from 18 local school districts. The organization would have hired a for-profit company, K12 Inc., to run its virtual online charter schools.

All 18 school districts – including Batavia District 101, Geneva District 304, St. Charles District 303 and Kaneland District 302 – rejected the request from Virtual Learning Solutions.

The agency appealed to the Illinois Charter School Commission. The commission is expected to decide how to proceed, now that Gov. Quinn signed a one-year moratorium on virtual charter schools.

Money raised will go to the Esophageal Cancer Action Network to raise awareness that most cases of this type of cancer is caused by reflux disease or heartburn and for research.

Geier, director of instruction K-12 for St. Charles School District 303, lost her husband, Bob, at age 52 to esophageal cancer in 2011. He did not have any risk factors – including reflux – but the family decided to support the network because it is entirely focused on esophageal cancer.

Mayor’s daughter charged with DUI

By BRENDA SCHORY bschory@shawmedia.com GENEVA – The daughter of Geneva Mayor Kevin Burns was charged with driving under the influence, a week after she was charged with underage drinking, according to police reports.

Florence C. Burns, 19, of the 1600 block of Kaneville Road, Geneva, was charged Sunday with DUI, with a blood-alcohol level of more than 0.08 percent. Both are misdemeanors.

According to court records, Burns’ blood alcohol was 0.216 percent, more than double the legal limit of 0.08 percent. She received an automatic suspension of her driver’s license, records show.

According to reports, police observed Burns park her green 2003 Ford Explorer

shortly before 2 a.m. on the 2200 block of Fargo Boulevard, and saw several people exit the vehicle. The officer noted that Burns’ speech was slurred, her eyes were bloodshot and glassy and she admitted both to driving and consuming alcohol.

According to court records, she was released on her own recognizance and is to appear in branch court July 17.

Burns and his ex-wife, Terry Emma, the executive director of the Geneva History Center, both said they would not comment.

In the earlier incident, Florence Burns was one of 10 charged May 25 at a party at which underage drinking was observed.

All 10 were fined $250 and were scheduled to appear in court June 4.

Asquini proud to be middle manager Saints defense built to sparkle up the center of diamond

jschwab@shawmedia.com ST. CHARLES – Strong defense up the middle has been a calling card for the St. Charles East baseball team this season.

That’s no accident.

East coach Len Asquini makes it a top priority to ensure the Saints are sure-handed at catcher, second base, shortstop and center field. If the Saints are going to kick the ball around, he wants to make sure it doesn’t happen at those high-traffic spots.

“It’s huge for our program across the board to be strong [up the middle],” Asquini said.

“We’re trying to get our best athletes and our best players there.”

East’s glovework up the middle is one of the chief reasons the Saints are making their first state appearance since 2004, beginning with today’s IHSA Class 4A semifinal against Libertyville.

The Saints’ defensive prowess starts behind home plate, where junior Adam Rojas has earned rave reviews in his debut season as varsity catcher. A near perfect throw to cut down a would-be Jacobs base-stealer in Monday’s supersectional win was the latest proud moment for Rojas, who has caught since his father, Eric, slotted him there during his youth baseball days.

“I was kind of like a tough guy when I was younger, my dad said,” Rojas said. “I’ve just kind of been back there forever.”

Rojas said he looks at base stealers as “a free out.”

“I get excited when they steal second because it’s just an opportunity to show them that they shouldn’t steal on me, because I’m ready for them to go,” Rojas said.

Asquini has seen his share of quality defensive catchers and thinks Rojas has a special skill set.

“Jack this year’s new at second, so we worked together hard all winter,” Erickson said. “The chemistry’s been great. Playing with him has been awesome.”

Erickson, a Columbia recruit, committed only five errors at the demanding shortstop spot as a junior. This season, that total has risen, but he’s returned to his airtight ways during the postseason, and Dellostritto has only five errors on the spring at second base.

“Jack’s a left-side infielder

playing second base, so he’s strong-armed, quick feet – that’s very, very helpful,” Asquini said. “Some of those double plays that a typical second baseman in high school’s not going to get it turned over, because of his arm strength, [he can].”

Senior center fielder Anthony Sciarrino is another of East’s defensive lynchpins.

Sciarrino doesn’t have the blazing speed of fellow standout outfielder Brannon Barry, the Saints’ right fielder, but Sciarrino gets reliable jumps on the ball and has no trouble communicating on balls in the gap.

“Being boisterous is big [for a center fielder], and Anthony certainly is that,” Asquini said with a smile.

East and Libertyville made a fleeting connection Monday when the Saints took the field at the Rockford Aviators’ stadium in Loves Park just after Libertyville polished off Maine South in the night’s first supersectional. By now, Erickson said the Saints

“The atmosphere [at Loves Park] was great, we played at the Cougars’ stadium earlier in the year, so we’re prepared for that kind of environment,” Erickson said.

Asquini coached the Saints to a Class AA state championship in 1999 during his first tour of duty with the program.

If the Saints are going to seize another state crown, continued slick defense likely will be part of the equation.

“I would say this group is making some history for themselves, and that’s kind of how we’re approaching it,” Asquini said. “This is their year and they’ve already done some wonderful things here in the postseason. This is their chance now, this weekend, to put that accent mark on it, and that’s what we’re looking for.”

Saints’ junior blazes way to fourth-place finish at state

However, for Koenen, there were two more elite players standing in his way May 25. Koenen dropped his final two matches – both to opponents from powerhouse Hinsdale Central – including a three-setter to Michael Lorenzini in the third-place match.

Koenen is a towering presence. At 6-foot-5, 235 pounds and apparently still growing, he acknowledged that keeping

his legs fresh doesn’t come easy.

“I was missing that energy I had on the first and second day,” Koenen said. “That’s something I need to work on, conserving that energy, getting that endurance and also my serve. I’d say those are two main goals I’m working on this summer.”

While Koenen still is tinkering with his serve, he’s already adept at sending his opponents’ serves back in resounding fashion. Along with his heavy, flat groundstrokes,

Koenen’s return of serve is among his most impressive attributes.

“His return of serve is the best I’ve seen in junior tennis for a long, long time,” King said. “He just had great hands, great eyes – he can rip it. His return of serve is definitely a huge, huge thing.”

About the only accolade missing from Koenen’s junior season was conference champion – with good reason. That weekend, Koenen and doubles partner Davis Crocker of Kalamazoo, Mich., won the

doubles championship at the USTA National Open 18s in Grand Rapids. Mich.

King called Koenen “an unbelievably great doubles player,” which figures to enhance Koenen’s value as he explores college tennis options this summer.

“Conference is a tough one to miss, too, but this tournament was a tough one to miss, too, especially with college coaches watching, and going into summer, that was a big tournament to play,” Koenen said.

Like big sisters Annemijn (who played collegiately at Arkansas and Missouri) and Liselot (currently playing at Houston), Koenen was born in Belgium, but is of Dutch nationality. The family lived in Louisiana when they first came to the U.S. but moved to St. Charles in 2006.

Annemijn and Liselot starred for the North Stars, including teaming for a sixthplace state doubles finish in 2008. They teased their little brother about one-upping them with his fourth-place singles showing this spring, but Koenen said the family pride was evident.

Koenen also was grateful for the season-long support of fellow Saints state qualifier Justin Bowman, a senior who played No. 2 singles for East.

“Having a player like that on our team that can really play 1 at any other school, to have Justin on the team, we pushed each other in practice,” Koenen said. “That’s something I’m really going to miss next year, to have that 1-2 duo we were at East.”

At East. He would have never suspected it when donning his North garb, but it rolls off the tongue.

Jasper Koenen envisioned a dynamite high school tennis career in St. Charles, just like the way things played out for his big sisters.

But just like his big sisters, Koenen figured he’d be piling up the wins at St. Charles North.

A district boundary change that affected the family’s Campton Hills home was a jarring development for Koenen as a fifth-grader.

It meant he’d be attending St. Charles East after years of rooting on sisters Annemijn and Liselot at North.

“I was upset because in middle school, I went to like all the football games for North, I had the North spirit wear and things like that,” Koenen said. “When I heard the news I was going to East, I had always viewed East as the rival school, East was the school you weren’t supposed to like. … But I love East. I love the school, I love the teachers and I love my friends. Looking back, I don’t think it really made too big of a difference on me.”

The same can’t be said for Koenen’s effect on the Saints’ tennis program.

Koenen, the Kane County Chronicle Boys Tennis Player of the Year, turned in a sensational junior season with the Saints, going 33-3 and winning his first five matches at the IHSA State Tournament before finishing in fourth place.

Day 2 of the three-day state tournament was especially memorable for Koenen, a 9-16 seed who pulled a pair of upsets, topping touted contenders Conrad Harron of University High and Peter Tarwid of Lake Forest, both in straight sets.

Barry King, Koenen’s personal coach out of Score Tennis & Fitness in Countryside, said the Friday of the state tennis tournament “might have been the best tennis I’ve seen him play.”

By TOM MUSICK tmusick@shawmedia.com LOS ANGELES – As a reliable, hard-nosed, stay-at-home defenseman during his 13-year career, Joel Quenneville appreciates what Sheldon Brookbank provides to the Blackhawks’ blue line.

On Thursday, Quenneville finally showed that appreciation with playing time instead of pep talks.

“Had to tell ‘Brooksy’ a couple times, ‘Be patient, there’s going to be an opportunity. It could be the most critical time come the playoffs,’ ” Quenneville said before Game 4 of the Western Conference finals. “I have to

commend him on his patience and his approach, knowing that he deserves to be playing. Nice to see him get a chance.”

Brookbank, 32, filled in for fellow defenseman Duncan Keith, who served a one-game suspension for high-sticking Kings forward Jeff Carter in the face in Game 3. The game marked Brookbank’s playoff debut with the Hawks after appearing in 17 playoff games with the Anaheim Ducks.

Minus Keith, Quenneville paired Brent Seabrook and Niklas Hjalmarsson on the Hawks’ top defensive line to start Game 4. Johnny Oduya and Michal Rozsival played together as the second defensive pairing,

while Brookbank and Nick Leddy formed the third pairing.

Quenneville said none of his defensemen should imitate Keith, a skilled skater and passer who won the Norris Trophy as the league’s top defenseman in 2010. Instead, Quenneville said, those who logged extra ice time to fill in for Keith should rely on their individual strengths.

“I don’t think we want to be Duncan,” Quenneville said.

“You’ve got to play your own game, play within your limitations, know we have the structure of our team game.

“We all have a rhyme or reason how we play without the puck. Everybody has different skill sets.”

QUICK READ Kevin Druley of the former Kane County Eagles, who closed a nomadic, decade-long run at Mooseheart in the late 2000s. While that ownership group pursued indoor football opportunities, Sharpe remained active in the semi-pro circuit, including a run as president of the McHenry County Pirates from 2007 to 2011. He started the then-Elgin Eagles in 2012, although that name was a misnomer.

IFL officials assigned the team to play home games in Wilmot, Wis., as there were conflicts with Elgin’s Memorial Field and St. Edward High School.

Sharpe reached out to Geneva District 304 administrators about a month ago, drawn to the central Kane County location and the school’s FieldTurf facility, installed in time for

the 2012-13 school year.

Geneva figured such overtures might be common sooner than later.

“We purposely didn’t count them as a certainty because when you do that, then you have the high potential for disappointment if they don’t materialize,” Geneva athletic director Jim Kafer said. “We did assume that having a facility like that would attract interest for any group that needs a large surface area that plays their game. And to find a facility where it doesn’t wear out, that makes it attractive.”

Turf is the preferred playing surface when teams can get it. With semi-pro leagues playing during summer months when high schools would just as soon let grass fields rest, artificial surfaces stand out.

For the Eagles, the arrangement is sweeter considering the higher concentration of recent high school and college grads. Players range in age from 18 to 30.

“We’ve got a nice balance. That’s the thing we like,” Sharpe said. “With the younger guys, you seem to have more camaraderie than you did with some of the older group because they were all married with children and those kind of things. These guys are young and fast and a nice bunch of kids.”

Sharpe is optimistic about building a fan base, especially considering the recent relocation of the Great Midwest Football League’s Kane County Chaos, moved to DeKalb to become the Illinois Chaos beginning this season.

The Chaos called Aurora Christian home in 2011 but played at West Aurora last season because of conflicts with field availability at ACS. “Christian was great people and it caught on, but with Aurora being so big it was really challenging to get that hometown buy-in, so to speak,” Chaos owner and coach Lloyd Hatcher said.

Hatcher called DeKalb the perfect fit, “a large community in the middle of an ocean of cornfields.”

Geneva is more metropolitan, but the Eagles likely wouldn’t take too much stock.

For the next 10 weeks, they have a place to bang heads and play ball.

Meet the new bosses: Wheaton Academy on Thursday named Brad Thornton as interim football coach. The former Wheaton College fullback spent the past six seasons as a defensive coach at Evangelical Christian School in Memphis, Tenn., helping the Eagles to three state semifinals in his tenure.

Wheaton Academy also has named Geof Weisenborn as boys lacrosse coach and director of performance.

Cubs’ latest hot prospect plenty confident

By KEVIN DRULEY kdruley@shawmedia.com Cubs senior vice president of scouting and player development Jason McLeod thinks first-round draft pick Kris Bryant will advance through the minor league system quickly.

Bryant, a power-hitting junior third baseman from the University of San Diego, thinks faster.

Asked where he could start in an organization that selected him second overall as the Major League Baseball First-Year Player Draft opened Thursday, Bryant ultimately had designs on where he’d finish.

“I’m definitely going to leave it up to the Cubs to decide that [starting point], if we can make this deal happen,” Bryant said.

“I obviously think I can play in the big leagues now. I have that type of confidence. But that’s not my decision.”

Kane County Cougars brass and fans would unquestionably welcome Bryant to Fifth Third Bank Ballpark, where

the Cubs’ 2012 first-round pick, center fielder Albert Almora, settled late last month.

Almora played with Rookie League Arizona and Short-A Boise after signing last summer, and was tabbed to begin the season with Class-A Kane County before breaking a hand in spring training. McLeod did not specify where Bryant would open his minor league tenure once he signs, but history suggests he might start ahead of where 19-year-old Almora did given Bryant’s college experience.

Experts widely considered Bryant – 6-foot-5 and 215 pounds – the top position player in the draft. He led the nation with 31 home runs while batting .329 with 62 RBIs in 62 games. Bryant also walked 66 times, and the Toreros later resorted to batting him leadoff when other teams pitched around him.

“We think he’s advanced,” McLeod said. “We think he’ll be able to go out and handle the competition right away.”

“Ultimately, he’ll tell us

when he’s ready to move to the next level” with his play, McLeod added later. That echoed McLeod’s organizational stance from February, when he visited Geneva as part of a Meet the Cubs hot-stove event.

Bryant’s mother, Susie, is from Chicago, but he has not been to the city. Bryant mentioned the Cubs’ famed World Series title drought when asked for his previous knowledge of the franchise. He also said he watched the 2012 draft telecast and recalled Almora fondly.

Whether the two share a dugout at Wrigley Field, Fifth Third Bank Ballpark or Triple-A Iowa, cold weather is liable to enter into the equation.

Bryant, a Las Vegas native, admitted he chose San Diego in part for its beaches and “perfect” climate, but he’s not worried about the chill.

“That’s nothing new to me,” he said. “I mean, if you square up a baseball, you don’t have to worry about playing in cold weather. It’s not going to hurt your hands too much.”

St. Charles native pursuing acting career in South Dakota KANE COUNTY CHRONICLE neighbors@kcchronicle.com Megan Elizabeth Gill, a rising star originally from the St. Charles area, is pursuing her professional acting dream as she joins Prairie Repertory Theatre in Brookings, SD, for its 43rd season.

Since the Prairie Repertory Theatre first began in the summer of 1970, the company has grown into a nationally-recognized repertory theater company.

Gill is returning for her second summer at the theater from Wichita State University, where she majors in musical theater.

This season, Gill will be performing the roles of Emily Arden in Rodgers and Hammerstein’s “State Fair”

and Karin in “A Second Helping: The Church Basement Ladies Sequel.”

She was seen last season as Shelby in “Steel Magnolias” and Audrey in “Leading Ladies.”

As a junior at WSU, she played Maggie in “Jake’s Women,” Mitzi in “Crazy for You,” Tango Dancer in “She Loves Me” and Kandi with a “K” in the college Web series “Opposite of People.”

Gill plans to move to New York after graduating in spring 2014 to pursue acting.

D-Day, if you mean departure from rehab, came early this week on Monday. As my pal, Willie Nelson, sings, “good to be on the road,” again!

I’m thinking that as a final gesture of appreciation, we will contact the good youth at our church (Baker United Methodist) to put a yard full of their special occasion flamingoes to offer final thanks for the “just ducky” days at Pine View.

Going back to the west side, down and up Main Street, the town of St. Charles seemed a bit more ghostly, but for the most part the same.

I couldn’t help wondering about the nighttime demons that have tarnished the sense of pride on the fox? What’s all this about some over-loaded patrons behaving badly in and outside of the bars?

My mind switched to the “good old days” mode when the trees were made for shade and not relief from urges and the sidewalks were only laced with abandoned hopscotch chalk.

A downtown tavern, The Oasis, was the official family business from the day after the repeal of Prohibition to the early 21st Century.

So, yes, I do have some perspective on this aspect of our local culture.

Steve and Selma shared their trade with at least a dozen other license-holders. Customers tended to distribute themselves by ethnicity.

Lithuanian-heritage owners included Romans, Norkaitis, Rimcus and Young.

A definite practice was to know that the owner was on the premises – offering some quality assurance and on guard against some misbehavior or chronic police issues that would lead to loss of the license and shop insurance.

Steve and Selma (who armed herself with an iron will and a cast iron frying pan insisted on good behavior – which was rewarded with an entry into the inner circle of regulars. The back-up enforcer was a steely German shepherd, two successive vigilantes, both named improbably, FuFu. FuFu was general a friendly,

JOAN KNOWS Joan Arteberry pet-me kind of dog. The stir of a fight about to happen or a loud mouth were his cues to begin his first stage of action: bare teeth and get-your-act-together growl. He rarely advanced; his reputation was sufficient.

Clearly the bar was never as crowded as our nighttime drawing card saloons have been. That meant, as at “Cheers,” everybody knew your name. Mostly nicknames tagged from a last name, such as “Brownie” or “Chappie” or a characteristic, such as “Noisy” or a term of particular association, such as the Lithuanian word for onion. (Chibulis?)

Probably the late night crowds are too numerous for familiar names, but if a sufficient number of staff recognizes the who’s who among troublemakers rather than simply seeing everyone as a cash-paying customer that might actually have an impact.

Final recall is that those who forgot their manners or their toilet training were scorned as being especially stupid and socially undesirable. Thinking perhaps we need a giant potty chair downtown where names and pictures of the wet ones could be on display. “Drip of the Week?” Not on display at the Municipal Building, as I once thought. There are many signs of good citizenship and community pride there. Any suggestions?

Finally, to emphasize the good citizens – school is out! Granddaughter Mazy says to thank all at Richmond School for a great year and sends wishes for a great summer.

They have seven grandchildren: Austin and Jared Walsh; Nolan, Ryan and Sydney Arndt; and Holland and Griffin Smits.

The couple’s children will host a family dinner Sunday, June 9, to celebrate their parents’ 50 years of marriage.

Patriot favors function over beauty Jeep’s marketing department employees bill the Patriot as the least expensive sport utility vehicle sold in the United States today.

In base form, which carries a $15,995 price tag, it is. This base model has no power windows, door locks or air conditioning.

Once those are added in, the Patriot’s price rises to the $19,500 level where sit the Nissan Juke, Hyundai Tucson/Kia Sportage (same Korean owner), Mitsubishi Outlander Sport and Jeep’s other small SUV, the Compass (actually, $18,500).

With the Compass, the Patriot is built as a unibody at Belvidere on the Dodge Caliber platform.

Patriot differs from Compass slightly. Departure and approach angles are steeper with the Patriot and cargo capacity is several cubic inches larger. Skid plates are offered as an option, too, on the Patriot. With a square, more up and down architecture, the Patriot looks like a Jeep. Tough and not beautiful. The modified exterior on the Compass, even with the traditional Jeep vertical seven-section grille, is more of a svelte sedan look.

Otherwise the similarities are obvious. Both the Compass and Patriot offer a 154-horsepower 2-liter or a 172-horsepower 2.4-liter engine mated to either a five-speed manual or an optional continuously variable transmission. Trim levels for each are Sport, Latitude and Limited.

A Latitude model of a fourdoor, five-passenger, two-row 2013 Patriot was delivered for review purposes recently and it carried that patented Jeep exterior look. Front, rear and sides are vertical and the top is flat, not rounded into the shape of a football. The luggage rack on top deals with no roof curvature.

Since it is of rectangular design, there are no curving walls to mitigate practical interior storage possibilities. Not quite up to par with the competition, there are 23 cubic feet for storage

A 2.4-liter, 172-horsepower inline four-cylinder engine is mated to a continuously variable transmission in the four-wheel-drive Latitude model of the 2013 Jeep Patriot.

BEHIND THE WHEEL Jerry Kuyper behind the upright second row, and 53.5 cubic feet when the rear split seats are folded creating a flat floor.

Unlike the competition, the Patriot has a full-sized, 17-inch P215 Goodyear Wrangler spare tire. Mounted on a 17-inch alloy wheel, the spare is stored under the carpeted rear storage floor.

In an era when vehicles have no spare (runflat tires with an air inflation kit) or a small temporary tire, a full-sized spare is comforting. The spare matches the 17-inch Goodyear Wranglers at the four corners of the vehicle.

A mild off-roader, the fourwheel-drive Latitude comes with the high ground clearance, three tow hooks and a low range

(more torque to crawl over rough terrain). Since it was a $22,880 Latitude model with the continuously variable transmission (standard on four-wheel-drive Latitudes), it had air conditioning; power windows, door locks and exterior mirrors; plus the larger (by an inch) tires and wheels; cruise control; a 115-volt auxiliary power outlet with a 12volt outlet; hill start assist (will not roll backwards or forwards if stopped on an incline); tinted glass; liftgate with fixed window; and fog lamps in front paired with halogen headlamps.

Front seats move manually, but they are heated. Power windows include an express up-down feature on the driver’s side. Seats are bolstered and comfortable front and rear.

Intermittent wipers in front are complemented by a rear window with defroster, washer and wiper. For entry and exit assistance,

there are four grab handles.

An open storage bin above the glove box comes in handy to hold papers and other smaller items.

The front seat folds forward to extend storage capabilities of longer items.

A 130-watt, four-speaker sound system includes AM-FM-satellite Sirius radio, compact disc and MP3 players and audio jack input.

Towing capacity is a 2,000 pound trailer and payload is 1,160 pounds which translates into five 232-pound adults or children.

The 2.4-liter, 16-valve, dual overhead cam, 172-horsepower, inline four-cylinder engine responded like a V6 with power galore. In this respect it is a typical Jeep. The CVT keeps performance times down so racing from 0 to 60 miles per hour might be done in 10 seconds.

This engine can be a gas hog as fuel economy, according to the Environmental Protection Agency, is 21 miles per gallon of unleaded gasoline in combined city and highway driving. During the test week on mostly suburban streets and highways with two adults and 20 pounds of cargo aboard, the average was 20.2 mpg. The vehicle was not driven aggressively, nor was there any use of the air conditioning. Jeep officials promise a more fuel-efficient 2014 Patriot.

Braking is suspect as automotive media testing puts the average stopping distance from 60 mpg to 0 mph at 140 feet.

This is 10 to 20 feet above the norm for a compact 3,136-pound SUV. Brakes are discs in front and drums in the rear.

The ride was pliant, quiet and high in a cabin that sits atop a body with an 8.1-inch ground clearance. The interior is fairly spartan with sound and climate controls in their usual places (front and center on the dashboard) and easy to reach, discern and operate. The touch-screen did not always respond as it should. Individual displays on the screen, such as for a particular radio station, had to be pushed hard, and then harder, before there was a response.

Standard safety fare includes an antilock braking system, traction and stability controls, brake assist, front airbags, overhead curtains for two rows and active head restraints.

Warranty coverage is three years or 36,000 miles and five years or 100,000 miles on the powertrain as well as 24-hour roadside assistance.

The Liberty was Jeep’s smallest SUV from 2002 through 2012 when production ceased. In 2007, Compass and Patriot came along to qualify as the company’s smallest SUVs. For information, visit www.

‘The Internship’ a two-hour recruitment ad Besides being a particularly lazy comedy for Vince Vaughn, “The Internship” is a two-hour recruitment ad for Google.

The Google logo appears so often you shouldn’t have to pay to see this movie. Google should pay you.

Why a famously successful company already reputed to be one of the best places in America to work would need to align itself with a by-thenumbers comedy to attract applicants is a mystery. But those who subject themselves to “The Internship” will learn the many benefits of employment at Google’s Silicon Valley campus.

The greatest of these would be the relaxed workplace environment. The headquarters’ atrium looks like the world’s largest preschool, with toys and pillows strewn about the comfortable seating area. The food and drinks in the lobby’s coffee bar are gratis.

Best of all, nobody appears to work. The happy “Googlers,” as they are called, spend their days cruising the campus on company-provided bicycles, taking company-sanctioned naps in special pods and playing in a company-sponsored quidditch tournament.

Apparently computers take care of all that search engine stuff while the staff is playing and napping.

As they once crashed weddings, Vaughn and costar Owen Wilson crash this workplace utopia and shake it up with their devil-maycare boyishness. Except that no, they don’t. They look about with their mouths agape and marvel at the wonderfulness of it all.

WESTHOFF REVIEWS Jeffrey Westhoff posedly have made watches obsolete. Employment prospects look bleak for two guys in their 40s with no job skills besides hustling.

Vaughn’s Billy McMahon is the schemer of the pair (of course) and he convinces Wilson’s soulful (of course) Nick Campell to scam their way into Google’s summer college intern program. To qualify, they enroll in Phoenix University, “the Harvard of Internet colleges.” Google isn’t the only Web-based business to get a plug.

Despite their appalling lack of computer knowledge (Billy says “on the line” instead of “online”) the friends make the cut and arrive at Google looking as out of place as giants in Munchkinland.

From here on “Internship” strives to be an outsiders vs. elitists ’80s comedy like “Revenge of the Nerds” and “Meatballs” as teams of

interns compete to land fulltime employment.

Naturally, Billy and Nick land in a team of outcasts.

The others are the antisocial Stuart (Dylan O’Brien), who never looks up from his smartphone screen; Neha (Tiya Sircar) who is supposed to be a misfit even though she is pretty, smart and has a good sense of humor; and Asian stereotype Yo-Yo (Tobit Raphael), who is literally brow-beaten by his domineering mother. When nervous, which is most of the time, he plucks at his eyebrow. You can guess where that joke leads.

“Internship” is directed

by Shawn Levy, who occasionally makes good movies (“Date Night,” “Real Steal”) but mostly churns out dumb and obvious comedies like the “Pink Panther” remake.

We know “Internship” falls in the second category from the very first scene, which has the two stars singing along to a cheesy song on the car stereo, Alanis Morissette’s “Ironic.”

Editing must be a foreign concept to Levy, because al-

most every scene runs much longer than necessary.

Much of the blame belongs to Vaughn. He produced the film, conceived its story and co-wrote the script with Jared Stern (“The Watch”).

The screenplay is so filled with his familiar, glad-handing blah blah blah that one of his exasperated teammates shouts, “You’re speaking a lot of words really fast and saying nothing.” Some movies review themselves, I tell you.

On the positive side, “Internship” is not another mean-spirited comedy along the lines of “Identity Thief” or the “Hangover” movies.

Instead, it is eerily positive and life-affirming, practically an ABC Afterschool Special albeit, an Afterschool Special where strip clubs and tequila shots lead to personal fulfillment.

That optimism might have been one of Google’s conditions for its participation. “The Internship” wants you to believe they are equal. This is what happens when corporate sponsorship masquerades as filmmaking.

Jeanne Phillips You should be receiving counseling to help you get over what was done to you, and frankly, so should Vernon. Unless he can stop treating you as though you are “untouchable,” you should NOT continue the “friendship,” because what he is doing is distancing himself when you need his support the most.

Dear Abby: About a year ago I became engaged to a very special man. We have decided to be married during a weeklong cruise we have taken the past two years. We knew some family members might not be able to attend for financial reasons, so we chose to invite only two close friends as witnesses and not have our families there.

Pack prescriptions in carry-on when traveling Dear Doctor K: In a few months, my husband and I are taking our first trip abroad. We both have chronic medical conditions. How should we prepare for our trip?

Dear Reader: Many people with medical conditions enjoy foreign travel. But your preparation will need to involve more than just reading some guidebooks.

First, check in with your doctor. He or she may have specific concerns or advice for you. If you have diabetes, for example, your blood sugar level is affected not only by how much you eat, but by how much you exercise. And during vacations, both of these can change substantially. So ask yourself what the impact on your eating and exercise is likely to be from the vacation you have planned.

Since you’re traveling internationally, find out if you need vaccinations or preventive medications. You can check the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) website (cdc. gov/travel), or ask your doctor.

Try to get your shots four to six weeks before your trip, as some vaccinations need time to kick in.

If you take prescription medications, pack more than enough to last through your trip, in case your return gets delayed. And carry your medications in your

(The TSA makes an exception to the “no more than 3.4 ounces of liquids or gels” rule for prescription medications and necessary medical supplies.) Also, carry a list of your medications, with both the generic and brand names. And bring along a doctor’s note if you have a pacemaker or other implanted device; you may need it when going through security checkpoints.

Get the name of a doctor or hospital at your destination.

There are organizations on the Internet that maintain the names of English-speaking doctors with good reputations in many countries around the world. They also identify trusted hospitals. One example is the International Association for Medical Assistance to Travelers.

I can’t personally vouch for the quality and integrity of the

doctors and hospitals linked to these organizations. I can say that many of the organizations have boards of directors populated by doctors affiliated with major U.S. academic medical centers. And check with your insurance to see what you need to do in case of an emergency.

If you easily suffer from motion sickness, take medicine in your carry-on bag. In addition, pack the following in your checked luggage: • Antidiarrheal medication, a laxative and an antacid; • Antihistamine and 1 percent hydrocortisone cream for mild allergic reactions; • Cold medicine; • Medications for pain relief or fever; • Antifungal and antibacterial ointments; • Lubricating eye drops; • Basic first-aid items (adhesive bandages, gauze, elastic bandage, antiseptic, tweezers, scissors, cotton-tipped applicators).

With a little advance planning, you and your husband can enjoy a healthy and safe vacation.

Dr. Wallace: This story is one for the book! I’m 15 and interested in going out with a guy who attends our church. He has a great personality and is adorable. I was hoping that he would ask me out because he has already told me that I’m “super cute.” I waited and waited, but no date request ever came so I decided to be the “aggressor” and ask him for a date. Dr. Wallace: We have a cheerleading squad of seven members at our high school. All seven of us are females. During our tryout period, we invited the boys to try out, but not one guy tried to make the squad.

Why don’t guys want to be cheerleaders? It takes a lot of strength, dexterity and stamina to be a successful cheerleader, and I’m sure these qualities are abundant in a lot of guys.

Some guys also think being a cheerleader would diminish their “macho” image.

When I was an administrator at Garden Grove (CA) High School, one of our cheerleaders was the now-actor and comedian, Steve Martin.

His cheerleading skills were superior, and I’m sure his experience of being in front of large audiences leading cheers for the “Argonauts” was excellent preparation for his movie career. At the bridge table, access to one hand or the other can be vital to enjoying success. How does that apply in this deal?

Against three no-trump, West leads the spade nine. How should South plan the play?

In the auction, North’s two-diamond rebid was New Minor Forcing, promising at least game-invitational values and asking opener to describe his hand further. Three clubs denied three hearts, indicated a good five-card suit, and implied a weak spade or diamond holding. (Otherwise, South would have continued with two no-trump.)

South has eight top tricks: three spades (given the lead), two hearts and three clubs.

Where will he find winner No. 9?

Against best defense, there isn’t time to play on diamonds or hearts. Declarer must get a fourth club trick. But that requires losing one club and having a hand entry in spades.

If South reasonably assumes the spade nine is top of nothing, he can take the first trick with dummy’s ace and play on clubs. But it is safer to put in dummy’s spade jack. If it wins, South’s king is his entry; or, if East covers with the queen, South wins with his king and can get to his hand with the spade 10. But if South errs by playing the spade two, East puts up his queen, and the contract’s door closes.
