Ten hurt in accidental shooting at club

By BRENDA SCHORY bschory@shawmedia.com BLACKBERRY TOWNSHIP – Ten people were injured Tuesday after a gun was accidentally discharged at a sportsmen’s club, according to a news release from the Kane County Sheriff’s Office.

Three people were taken to Delnor Hospital in Geneva and seven were treated at the scene, including the man who fired his gun, police said.

There were no life-threatening injuries.

According to the sheriff’s investigation, a 69-year-old member of the club had completed a shooting session and entered the clubhouse about 7:30 p.m., according to the release. Sheriff’s Lt. Pat Gengler said in an email the member involved in the shooting is a

range safety officer.

A range safety officer is a certification earned after taking training classes, according to club Treasurer Andrea Ema of Geneva.

“We have people at our club who have that certification,” Ema said.

The man was preparing to put his 12-gauge shotgun away and put a snap cap into the

gun. A snap cap is used to save the firing pin of the gun while it is stored, the release stated.

The man reportedly pulled the trigger – causing the shotgun to discharge – while he had the firearm pointed at the floor, according to the release.

A live shotgun round was in the gun instead of the snap cap, according to the release.

The buckshot from the live shotgun round hit the floor and bounced up and out and hit 10 people.

Those taken to Delnor were a 31-year-old man from West Chicago, a 60-year-old man

from Somonauk and a 14-yearold boy from Geneva, police said.

Gengler confirmed in an email late Wednesday that the police investigation is closed without charges because the shooting is considered accidental.

Ema said she was not a witness to the shooting and would not comment. Ema directed questions to Mark Creedon of Batavia, president of the St. Charles Sportsmen’s Club.

Creedon did not return voicemail messages or an email seeking comment.

jbilyk@shawmedia.com In the past six years, few elements of life in the Tri-Cities have changed as rapidly and as significantly as the local housing market.

And in coming months, officials in the cities of St. Charles, Geneva and Batavia, along with the village of North Aurora, will seek to learn how they can adjust city policies to better reflect the new reality, and using other people’s money to do it.

This summer, those community development officials will partner with Kane County and regional land planning group, the Chicago Metropolitan Agency for Planning, on a project to study the housing market along the Fox River in central Kane County.

Dick Untch, community development director for the city of Geneva, said the local project will come as part of CMAP’s larger program, Homes for a Changing Region.

That program, according to information supplied

by Untch and attributed to CMAP, helps cities and villages in the Chicago area better understand their local housing stock, and craft policies to better match future hous-

“Our housing challenges don’t stop at municipal corporate limit lines,” Untch said.

“These are regional issues.”

The study, which will run from July 2013 to August 2014, would analyze the market to identify “opportunities and gaps in the housing profile” and to better match local housing to the needs of the local workforce, according to the CMAP information sheet.

Local real estate agents said they welcomed such a study, noting that they hoped for a particular emphasis on opportunities for affordable housing for senior citizens and for young people seeking a start in life.

“You have to make sure your community is accommodating to everyone,” said Carrie Walter, a real estate agent

with the St. Charles office of Keller Williams. “We need to make sure there are, for instance, places for retiring baby boomers and 20-somethings.

“Right now, those opportunities are harder to find locally.”

The governments of the Tri-Cities and North Aurora applied together last year to CMAP to participate in the program.

Officials said the study will be funded by CMAP. “This kind of housing analysis is something we’ve wanted to do for some time, but it just wasn’t in the budget,” Untch said.

Officials in St. Charles and Batavia said they also had high hopes for the study.

They noted that in the past few years, the market has changed markedly, because waves of home foreclosures have ravaged the market and slashed home prices by as much as 25 percent or more from their peak.

That, in turn, dried up the market for certain kinds of homes that once sold briskly in the region, while increasing demand for other kinds of dwellings, such as rental

The 10th annual ET Batavia Triathlon and Duathlon will be at various locations throughout the city. Last year’s event raised $18,000 for The Leukemia and Lymphoma Society, Batavia MainStreet and the Batavia Interfaith Food Pantry.

“I think we will raise some more dollars this year,” race director Joe LoPresto said.

“Our registration and sponsorships have been strong.”

The event will start at 6:30 a.m. with a 400-meter swim at the outdoor, unheated pool at Quarry Beach Park, followed by a 14.7-mile bike loop and 4.1-mile run along the Fox River.

Participants can compete in one of three races – the triathlon, a duathlon or a triathlon relay. Spectators are encouraged to watch anywhere along the course.

The event will be held rain or shine, except if there are unsafe weather conditions, LoPresto said.

“Thunder and lightning will delay the race,” he said.

“We’ve never had a weather-related delay or cancellation.”

The finish line will be at the Batavia Riverwalk on North Island Avenue and Houston Street. The race will finish between 9:30 and 9:45 a.m., and an awards ceremony will begin at about 10 a.m. in front of the Peg Bond Center, LoPresto said.

Motorists should be aware of increased bicycle traffic between 6 and 10 a.m. on both Main and Wilson streets, Route 31 and Randall, Bliss, Seavey and Nelson Lake roads. In addition, they

should anticipate increased runner traffic between 9:30 and 11:30 a.m. on Shumway, Island Avenue and at the intersection of Wilson Street and Island Avenue.

There will be a complete road closure on Main Street between Route 31 and Van Nortwick Avenue between 6:30 and 9:30 a.m. for the safety of bike course participants.

In conjunction with the triathlon and duathlon, there will be a Kids’ Dash, a noncompetitive event for children 8 and under, and the ET Batavia Splash and Dash, a youth event that combines running and swimming. The focus is on participation rather than competition.

Batavia Community Development Director Scott Buening said he anticipated Batavia’s city government could use the study to “go back and tweak” its development plans, as well as potentially craft an entirely new housing ordinance.

“This will give us guidance, and a snapshot of what the market holds for us,” Buening said. “It’s a worthwhile study to find what the community may need.”

RiverPark will be key piece of ‘GO Day’ events

By BRENDA SCHORY bschory@shawmedia.com GENEVA – RiverPark of Geneva and the city of Geneva will host a daylong event to celebrate the sixth National Get Outdoors Day from 1 to 4 p.m. Saturday at RiverPark, at Peyton Street and North River Lane along the Fox River in Geneva.

June 8 is a nationally recognized day to encourage the enjoyment of the outdoors, with the Army Corps of Engineers, the U.S. Forest Service, American Recreation Coalition and local governments organizing events designed to promote an appreciation for nature and the benefits it brings.

The Geneva City Council also approved a resolution this week, designating the day as “GO Day” in Geneva.

“It’s important for us to get families and children outside enjoying nature,” said Sharon Jones of Geneva, a board member of the group that built RiverPark. “We should be outside more for our physical and psychological health and for our knowledge and understanding of our ecosystem.”

Jones said RiverPark is a draw for people who want to touch base with nature in a public area that is quiet and safe. A day outside by the river likely will be comfortable and participants would likely not be affected by insects, she said.

The program will begin with “Moving with the Ele-

ments” by yoga instructor Pam O’Brien, followed by music from folk singer Lee Murdoch.

Multiple activities are scheduled at half-hour intervals including parent/child nature hikes, park feature tours, sketch pad art – with supplies provided by Len Bielefeldt of the Art Box – with Geneva High School Art Club students encouraging youth to record their favorite flora and fauna of the high summer prairie in the RiverPark.

The event will include ongoing “plein air” painting demonstrations by members of the Greater Geneva Art Guild and Suzanne Massion.

“Plein air” is French for “open air,” the practice of painting outdoors on location.

Outdoor artists Al Ochsner will demonstrate fish rubbings, Nan Waterstreet will demonstrate multimedia art and Andrea Burchett will work with chalk art.

Denise Sandoval of the Conservation Foundation’s Conservation@Home program will talk about planning and maintaining a native plant garden. Mary Zaander of Witness Tree Native Landscapes will give guided tours of the native RiverPark ecosystem.

Throughout the afternoon, submissions from the photography contest of RiverPark will be on display and the “All Things RiverPark” original poems will be read aloud.

Bob Geiken, board president for the Tri-Cities Soccer Association, said he expects as many as 170 games to be played at James Breen Community Park, at the corner of Peck and Campton Hills roads in St. Charles. The event will be held in conjunction with the annual Larry Winland Memorial Tournament for players under the age of 12 and players under the age of 14.

Geiken, who has been on the board for 25 years, said all teams are playing Saturday on home turf – that includes novice players, those on more laid-back recreational teams up through the highest level of competition. Geiken said the soccer association’s broad reach is one of the reasons it has thrived over more than three decades.

“It’s a great sport, and we allow families to be families.

Moms and dads can coach their kids; friends can be with friends,” he said. “Soccer is a fun sport. We allow all levels of play, from beginner to expert.”

Geiken said the Tri-Cities Soccer Association was founded in 1977 when a group of parents took the initiative to start a local soccer program. The group joined with park districts in Batavia, St.

Charles and Geneva, which agreed to provide soccer fields as long as parents helped run the association.

The Tri-Cities Soccer Association started with a few hundred people, he said, but has grown to more than 3,500 participants. Players range from ages 4 to 18, and while many players hail from St. Charles, Geneva, Batavia and South Elgin, anyone can join.

Geiken said the Tri-Cities Soccer Association maintains its partnerships with local park districts, and parents still make up much of the volunteer base.

“We form our recreational teams in our neighborhoods, so it’s formed around a school.

It’s a much more friendly atmosphere, and we try to keep kids fairly close to where they live,” he said. “Interestingly, we have a lot of volunteer parents who played when they were kids.”

Saturday’s event is open to the public, and food vendors and inflatable playground equipment will be available during the day.

As a result, the focal point of light entering the eye falls short of the retina, and distant images become blurred while nearby objects appear clear. Although various theories exist about what factors may play a role in contributing to nearsightedness, including performing close-up school work, one new finding has emerged. According to data involving Danish school children, their nearsightedness progressed most during winter days with limited sunshine, and during the long days of summer, their myopia progressed more slowly. These findings lead researchers to believe that nearsighted children could benefit from spending as much time outdoors as possible.

P.S. Almost a third of Americans have myopia, which usually appears in childhood and worsens as the eye grows and keeps changing shape until age 20.

ST. CHARLES TOWNSHIP – An Elgin man is in custody of the Illinois Department of Corrections after pleading guilty to charges related to the theft of a car from a St. Charles dealership, according to online reNicholas cords.

N i c h o l a s Seidel Seidel, 31, was sentenced last month to 10 years in prison for burglary; 10 years for receiving, possessing or selling a stolen motor vehicle; and seven years

for issuing or delivering a forged document.

Kane County circuit clerk records indicate the sentences are to be served concurrently and that he will receive credit for 525 days of time served.

He was admitted to the Illinois Department of Corrections on Tuesday, according to the agency’s website.

On Dec. 18, 2011, Seidel used a counterfeit $20 bill to purchase a beverage at the Walgreens at 2751 E. Main St. in St. Charles, St. Charles police said.

Three days later, authorities said he drove off with a black 2002 BMW from Don McCue Chevrolet, 2015 E. Main St., St. Charles.

Board poised to approve hire of new outreach coordinator

By JONATHAN BILYK jbilyk@shawmedia.com GENEVA – The leaders of the Kane County Board appear poised to back Kane County Board Chairman Chris Lauzen’s call to hire someone to coordinate an enhanced community relations push from the county government.

The Kane County Board’s Executive Committee on Wednesday unanimously recommended the County Board authorize Lauzen to hire a contracted employee to oversee efforts, centered on social media and the county’s website, to improve the county’s image among residents and those outside the county alike.

Speaking to the committee, which is made up of the chairs of the County Board’s various committees, Lauzen said the county is in need of an energetic, enthusiastic personality who can reach out to the county’s various demograph-

ics and communities and create energized “coils of people and ideas.”

He said he hopes the outreach program would bring people together and “draw families and business to Kane County.”

He said he wants a program that “makes it more fun to live, work and invest in Kane County.”

The outreach program would be driven by social media, including Facebook and the county’s website, Lauzen said.

He said success would be measured by growth within the county’s digital social media networks.

He said he has yet to select someone for the job.

Lauzen quietly introduced the proposal in a job listing posted on the county’s website in early May, advertising a full-time temporary position, paying a wage of up to $25 an hour for a six-month term.

The county also would hire a community outreach assis-

tant, Lauzen said.

Lauzen said the positions would be paid out of savings he said have been generated from his decisions to terminate county contracts with lobbyists that in years past represented the county’s interests to lawmakers in Springfield.

He said, in the last four years, the county spent $363,000 on fees related to contracted publicity and lobbying services.

“I’d like to take one-tenth of that to test what I think is a solid concept,” Lauzen said.

County Board members on the Executive Committee endorsed the proposal.

County Board member Drew Frasz, R-Elburn, said the outreach coordinator would enhance communication between the board and the public, as the County Board’s staffing levels were hurt by retirements in recent months.

“This is a gaping hole that needs to be filled,” Frasz said.

Modern-day fingerprinting THE WASHINGTON POST Government collection of DNA is as tantalizing to law enforcement as it is terrifying to those who see it as an unwarranted intrusion on privacy. A split Supreme Court on Monday took its stand on the side of law enforcement, finding that the government can take DNA from suspects arrested under suspicion of violent crime. The five-justice majority made the right call.

At issue was a Maryland law that requires people arrested for violent crime to give a DNA swab to authorities. In 2009, Maryland police took Alonzo Jay King Jr. into custody for assault; the DNA sample they collected matched DNA evidence from an unsolved rape investigation six years earlier. Mr. King went to prison for the rape, but he challenged the Maryland law under which the police took his DNA. After Maryland’s highest court threw out Mr. King’s conviction, it was up to the Supreme Court to decide if Maryland conducted a constitutional search when the state took Mr. King’s DNA – and in effect whether similar laws in states across the country are legal.

The majority found that the potential of DNA to serve as the 21st-century equivalent of fingerprinting justified laws such as Maryland’s. During booking, suspects have their prints taken as a matter of course. Police can then use that information to

defeat aliases that suspects might be using, to obtain information on suspects’ criminal history and even to solve cold cases in which authorities recovered fingerprints that they couldn’t identify. Since DNA is an exceptionally precise way to identify people, handing over a swab should be seen as a similarly reasonable way to identify and process arrestees, part of building a picture of who they are and the dangers they pose.

This ruling will not create some sort of disturbing database in which every American’s risk of developing diabetes or cancer is just a click away from any curious cop. Several provisions in Maryland’s law make clear that it is to be used only to collect information that denotes identity and nothing else; no one’s full genome will go on file.

But a spirited dissent from Justice Antonin Scalia raised a different objection. Justice Scalia argued that Maryland’s law isn’t really like fingerprinting because it is specifically geared toward solving cold cases, not identifying and processing arrestees.

But, as the majority pointed out, the rapid advance of DNA identification technology promises to make it as efficient a tool in the administration of criminal justice as fingerprinting has been, serving a variety of legitimate ends at many stages in the system, including identification. The justices were right to allow that process to continue to play out.

LETTERS TO THE EDITOR Teen drivers and safety To the Editor: Memorial Day marked the beginning of the 100 deadliest days of the year on our nation’s roads for teen drivers. Traditionally during the summer months, hundreds of teens are killed in car crashes and their families devastated. These deaths are unacceptable, especially because these crashes are preventable. I implore parents to remain vigilant as they play a big role in the fight to end these tragic crashes.

School might be out, but teens still need to be off the roads by 10 p.m., when teen crash risks sharply increase. Although teens may spend more time with friends during the summer months, teens should not ride with or carry other

teen passengers. Just one teen passenger increases a teen driver’s crash risk by as much as 48 percent. Parents, please don’t ever sacrifice safety for convenience.

If your teen is out late or with friends, make other travel arrangements. The risk is not worth the potential consequence.

According to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration, July 23, 2011, and July 30, 2011, tied for the deadliest days for young people ages 15-20 on our nation’s highways (25 motor vehicle deaths occurred on each of those dates).

Additionally, in 2011, 60 percent of 16- to 20-year-old passenger vehicle occupants who lost their lives in motor vehicle crashes were not wearing a seatbelt. This

data further proves the public health problem we are facing when our teen drivers do not have driving rules set and enforced at home.

As the victim advocate for the HEARTS Network – an initiative of the National Safety Council and The Allstate Foundation – I work with families to help raise awareness about why teen crashes occur and what we can do to prevent them. I encourage parents to get involved and become advocates for their teens’ safety on our roadways. By doing so, I’m confident this summer can be the safest yet for our teen drivers.

BATAVIA – Craig Foltos will clip hair for 24 hours straight this weekend for a good cause.

For the 24th year, Foltos, who owns Foltos Tonsorial Parlor in downtown Batavia, will cut hair and donate all the proceeds to Ronald McDonald Children’s Charities as part of Chop Around the Clock.

Last year, the event raised more than $10,000. The Ronald McDonald House provides a home for families of seriously ill children who receive treatment at nearby hospitals.

There are several Ronald McDonald Houses in the Chicago area.

“I go there once a month,” he said. “When you see the need and can put faces to it, it’s easy to want to do this.”

Oberweis: It’s important to support new state GOP chair

By BRENDA SCHORY bschory@shawmedia.com The Illinois Republican State Central Committee selected campaign veteran John “Jack” Dorgan of Rosemont to lead the GOP. “I thank the Republican leadership for their confidence and trust, and am excited for the opportunity to grow our party by talking to voters about our qualified slate of candidates for 2014,” Dorgan said in a prepared statement.

He promised that if voters give GOP candidates a chance, “we’ll give them a real choice.

Illinoisans deserve strong leadership, and that will come from the Republican Party,” according to the statement.

State Sen. Jim Oberweis, R-Sugar Grove, said he did not support Dorgan during the voting, but preferred Jim Nalepa, a businessman from Hinsdale, instead.

“I was probably the strongest opponent of Jack Dorgan for chairman,” Oberweis said.

“But the election is over. Jack won, and I think it’s important that we now do the best we all can to give him a chance and support him however we can.”

Dorgan is a 12-year member of the Illinois Republican State Central Committee, a village trustee in Rosemont, and partner at Springfield lobbyist firm Dorgan-McPike & Associates, according to a statement from the central committee.

Dorgan also worked in the

administrations of Gov. James Thompson and Gov. Jim Edgar, as well as on numerous presidential, state and local campaigns. Dorgan is married and has three daughters.

The announcement of a new party chairman follows the resignation of St. Charles resident Pat Brady, who stepped down May 7 after four years in the role.

Brady said he stepped down because he had other professional and political goals, and he said he wanted to focus on his wife’s health, as she has been fighting cancer over the past two years.

The effort to oust Brady was led, in part, by Oberweis.

“I know John, I have met him in my trips to Springfield,” Guethle said. “Good luck to John in his new post.”

But the choice of Dorgan also sparked some criticism.

Doug Ibendahl, an attorney and editor of Republican News Watch, said the committee picked a Democrat.

“I think he’s a terrible choice,” Ibendahl said. “You can’t have a GOP chairman who regularly gives money to Democrats. It’s absurd. Only in Illinois. It does not matter if

he gives money to Democrats individually or through his two-person lobbying firm. Normal Republicans are not going to follow a leader like that.”

Dorgan did not respond to a request for comment on the criticism.

State Rep. Mike Fortner, R-West Chicago, said he is not a member of the central committee and did not have a vote. Responding to the criticism that Dorgan supports Democrats, Fornter said, “He’s a lobbyist.

He works with both sides.”

“Do I approve of him? We’ll see how it works out,” Fortner said. “I’ve worked with him a lot as a lobbyist. ... I am certainly committed to work with the state chairman to get a stronger party.”

All Chocolate Kitchen owner to join Chef’s Hall of Fame

By NICOLE WESKERNA nweskerna@shawmedia.com GENEVA – Alain Roby, owner of the All Chocolate Kitchen in Geneva, is known for breaking world records with his sculptures made of sweets, which include a 20-foot, 8-inch tower made of chocolate and a 40-foot candy cane.

As the only pastry chef to hold three Guinness Book of World Records, his efforts and success in the pastry industry have been noticed by the Chicago Culinary Museum. The Geneva pastry chef recently was recognized as one of Chicago’s most distinguished chefs after being inducted into the Chicago Culinary Museum’s 2013 Chef’s Hall of Fame.

He’ll be formally inducted Oct. 17, along with Chef of the Year, Paul Kahan, of Blackbird and The Publican; and Industry Leader of the Year, Richard Melman, of Lettuce Entertain You. Others who have been inducted into the Chef’s Hall of Fame in the past include Art Smith and Charlie Trotter.

“Your job as a chef is to make people happy,” Roby said. “It’s simple.”

Roby has been a pastry chef for 35 years and spent 24 years working for a high-end hotel in Chicago. For the past three years, he has owned the All Chocolate Kitchen at 33 S. Third St. with his wife, Esther.

“It’s amazing how much time flies when you’re having fun,” Roby said.

Although Roby is slated to be formally inducted into the Chef’s Hall of Fame, the rapid expansion that the All Chocolate Kitchen has experienced over the past three years isn’t skipping a beat.

The restaurant is gearing up to introduce wine and chocolate tasting events, and Roby said he already has applied for a liquor license. They’ve already selected wines from Acquaviva Winery in Maple Park to pair with their latest line of chocolates, the Aroma Line, which features chocolates from all over the world.

Roby said will be “very exclusive,” will be in the All Chocolate Kitchen’s private room, which can be completely closed off from the rest of the restaurant with a sliding divider whenever there’s an event.

The room holds 25 to 30 people, and the tastings likely will include presentations about why the Aroma Line is made differently from other chocolates, as well as explanations on how wine is made. Reservations will be required, Roby added.

Roby also noted that wine will be used only during the tastings and it will not be sold otherwise.

The Aroma Line already has been

rolled out and is available at the All Chocolate Kitchen. The name and logo for the line – with an A in the shape of the Eiffel Tower combined with the word “Roma,” reflects Roby’s French heritage and his wife Esther’s Italian heritage.

Pairing the wine with chocolate adds a burst of flavors, Roby said.

“If you just taste the wine, it’s great.

But you’re missing so much more,” he said. “The French truffle has cocoa powder. The smoothness of the chocolate and the dryness of the cocoa accented with a sweet white wine – fireworks, explosion.

Eric Schelkopf: So, is it just a coincidence that your last name is Green and you’re playing at the Batavia Green Walk?

Jim Green: Yes, it is. It’s a great combo for me. It’s something I would go to if I wasn’t part of it. I asked them if I could play as part of it.

ES: I understand you have been spending a lot of time in Israel for the past two years.

What did you do there?

JG: It was kind of like starting over again for me, because I don’t have any big promotional machine behind me. I started giving guitar lessons, because a lot of people were asking me after seeing me perform on the street.

I played just about every folk club there is there, and I also played at their big folk festival, Jacob’s Ladder.

ES: What propelled you to want to go to Israel in the first place?

JG: A girl. I met someone, and decided that I could play music anywhere, so I decided to give it a shot.

ES: Did your time in Israel inspire you to write more songs?

JG: I was there for the last war with Hezbollah. They were lobbing rockets into Tel Aviv, where I was. That was kind of unheard of until that point.

would come out of me, but something really tranquil and peaceful came out of that whole experience.

It was almost like I was writing and praying at the same time, just trying to remain peaceful.

ES: So, you have some new material, I imagine?

JG: Yeah, I have an album’s worth of material. It’s just a matter of finding the time to record it and get it out there.

ES: You have an unusual way of playing. It’s more of a percussive style. It seems as though both your hands are pretty much in motion when you are playing.

JG: Not every song is like that, but that’s definitely is what gets people attention. I just call it a percussive technique, because everything I do is percussive, whether it’s tapping on the fingerboard or on the body of the guitar to make percussive sounds.

I’m not trying to show off, I’m trying to write good songs, and if the song requires me to use a particular technique, then that’s what it will be.

I kind of think of it like inside a piano, the hammers are hitting the strings. My fingers are kind of like the hammers

hitting the strings.

I also do traditional fingerstyle and strumming, and sometimes a song is just that.

ES: You won the title of “Guitar Idol 2004.” Are you pretty proud of that?

JG: Yeah, it was a lot of fun.

It was a big contest held at a music store, and there was just week after week of competition and elimination.

They kind of set it up like “American Idol,” with the three judges and the crowd being there.

ES: Do you try to create a mood when you play?

JG: I think it says a lot when

you write a song and play it for somebody and somebody says, “You know, that reminded me a lot about being in Santa Fe, and the song is called ‘Santa Fe.’ ” I feel like, I guess I did pretty well with that song. They got it. I named it correctly.

ES: Do you have any dream projects or collaborations?

JG: I really like riding bicycles, and the past few years, I’ve been doing smaller bike trips, like for five or seven days.

I thought it would be great to do a trip on a bike and bring my guitar and just write about whatever I am experiencing.

That’s something I have in the back of my head as a dream project.

The artist inspires the painting and the drink inspires the artist,” said Kevin Kuster, former Playboy photographer and current part-owner of the Creator Gallery.

Piggybacking off of the concept behind Bottle and Botegga, a BYOB painting party franchise with locations in LaGrange, Glen Ellyn and Chicago; and Vino van Gogh, a wine-induced mobile painting class that travels to different locations between Chicago and the Fox Valley, Kuster said he wanted to offer something similar in Kane County as a means of providing an exciting alternative to a normal night out.

“I believe that people are always looking for unique and fun things to do in the area,” Kuster said. “When we’re kids, we’re always encouraged to be creative, and that falls away the older you get. So, we wanted to create a night where people can have a fun and unique experience.”

Jennifer Hunger, member of the Aurora Art League and substitute art teacher in North Aurora, will teach each class, which will include a five-minute tutorial about the featured artist. Every student will paint their representation of an image – inspired by the featured artist – with help and instruction from Hunger.

Carter medals in two relays, pushes Knights

By KEVIN DRULEY kdruley@shawmedia.com Kaneland junior Kyle Carter aspires to get his name out there, even after a season in which he shined in the oft-highlighted 800 meters.

That event garners its share of attention from track and field fans, so perhaps part of his solution rests in simply staying put.

“People always say it’s their favorite race just because it’s such a tough race,” Carter said. “It’s my favorite, too. It’s always fun to hear people saying they enjoyed the race and are looking forward to it.”

4x800 relay team win a 2A state title last month. Traffic and falling bodies prompted Carter to stop as he took the baton from lead leg Conor Johnson, but Carter accepted and overcame the challenge.

The Kane County Chronicle Boys Track and Field Athlete of the Year did his share of that this spring.

What coach Eric Baron enjoyed most was Carter’s selflessness. He opted against competing in the open 800 for the state series in favor of giving his best to

the relays. Carter also ran with the Knights’ runner-up 4x400.

“He’s just such an unselfish kid. It says a lot about his character and about who he is and how he believes in the program and believes in his teammates,” Baron said.

Baron has seen athletes excel in the 800 and 4x800 before, but it’s a steeper challenge when he or she is asked to navigate that schedule on consecutive days, as in the state meet.

Since Carter still has one season remaining, Baron feels better about the decision. Carter knows he’ll have more chances, too, and that he comes equipped with the skills to capitalize on them.

In last month’s Northern Illinois Big 12 Meet at Dixon, Carter cruised to the 800 title

in 1:54.46, the second-fastest time in 2A this season.

“I’ve always liked running. I’ve always been quick,” Carter said. “Seventh grade is the first year you can sign up for track in middle school, so I did and I really enjoyed it.”

Carter has grinned alongside senior teammate Nathaniel Kucera for much of that span. The two found themselves in similar event and training groups from an early age, and developed a deeper bond during high school cross country seasons.

On Saturday, both are set to compete in the 800 at the Midwest Distance Gala at Benedictine after meeting qualifying standards during the spring.

Johnson also was part of both medal-winning relays.

Luis Acosta ran the third leg of the 4x800, while Dylan Nauert anchored the 4x400.

Carter and Kucera continued regular workout regimens after the state series as the Midwest meet loomed. Carter plans to take a breather sometime soon, but he’s fine with staying active, especially as he seeks to build a profile with college suitors.

“Just kept going with our training, didn’t take any days off,” Carter said.

“We didn’t want to throw anything off or anything.”

CHARLES – Even the most long-winded of end-ofseason banquets do not include awards as obscure as “quiet MVP.” Nonetheless, St. Charles East softball coach Kelly Horan doled out that informal honor to junior center fielder Tess Hupe on Wednesday before the Saints’ final practice before shipping off today for East Peoria. The Saints will face Barrington on Friday afternoon in an IHSA Class 4A state semifinal.

“If you have a loud MVP and you have a quiet MVP, she definitely gets the quiet MVP award,” Horan said of Hupe.

Hupe’s humble leadership style, even as she has enjoyed a banner season at the plate and defensively, has been among the many pluses in the Saints’ memorable season.

“I don’t really boss people around at all,” Hupe said. “I really try to stay positive, and I think that’s why some of the younger girls look up to me. …

8SPORTS SHORT ST. CHARLES – Building a wrestling program is made easier when the coach is in the building on a daily basis.

At long last, St. Charles North fits the bill.

On Wednesday, North announced Ben Hummel as its new wrestling coach, pending school board approval.

Hummel, 31, will serve as the school’s dean of students by day, providing for regular contact with athletes, a luxury not enjoyed by predecessors.

“That’s just a big part of being part of the culture and recruiting kids and just building

a solid foundation,” Hummel said. “I think that’s a real key just from the get-go.”

Hummel spent the past seven years as a social studies teacher and assistant coach at Neuqua Valley. He wrestled in the middle of the lineup during his prep career at Castro Valley (Calif.) High and at Northwestern College, an NAIA school in Orange City, Iowa.

“I’m a big fan of just aggressive, offensive wrestling and try to teach the kids to score from every position and keep going to the very end,” Hummel said.

Hupe hits second in East’s order, behind senior shortstop Lexi Perez, and contributing to a fast start for the Saints is one of Hupe’s priorities. The speedy, left-handed hitter counts many successful slaps and bunts among her 44 hits on the season.

Hupe is batting .361 and has scored 33 runs, trailing only Perez (39) and Kate Peterburs (35) in East’s potent lineup.

“When we have me and Lexi on, I think that’s unstoppable to a lot of teams because that’s a lot of speed on the bases and no outs,” Hupe said. “Starting off a game like that is really powerful.

And if she doesn’t get on, I just know it’s my job to get on base any way I can, if that’s a walk, a hit – anything.”

Defensively, Horan credits Hupe for anchoring a Saints outfield that also includes freshman Katie Kolb in left field and Lorenzini in right.

“You definitely need a captain in the outfield,” Horan said. “She’s got a senior over in right field and a freshman in left field. Making that a cohesive unit has been very important.”

The Saints finished last

season a respectable 20-13-1, but were nowhere near the juggernaut they’ve become this spring.

Hupe said beating some of the higher-profile Upstate Eight Conference teams early this season emboldened her that East could make what is its second downstate appearance in program history.

“I think it was when we started beating teams like Bartlett and Lake Park, teams that we couldn’t quite beat last year but this year we just pushed through that, and we got the extra hit,” Hupe said. “I think it just showed we have the heart that we didn’t have last year and the ability and the belief.”

The Saints will need all of that – and maybe more – to handle a veteran Barrington team that owns the best record in the state at 35-1. The Fillies’ lone setback came in 15 innings, a 3-2 loss to Marengo as part of a doubleheader split April 20.

People often ask the Spartans what got into them, and they struggle to put a finger on a catalyst.

If there must be a turning point that propelled the team toward Friday’s 3A state semifinal against Grayslake Central in Joliet, players concede it’s an ongoing, intangible one.

A pitching staff that praises the technical play of its defense doesn’t try to be perfect, and the Spartans seem to squeeze out just enough runs.

“Once we started going, it was going to be real tough for us to slow down,” senior lefthander Andrew Brundage said.

“We haven’t slowed down, obviously, and I don’t see us slowing down in the future.”

St. Francis still might lobby its lineup for some breathing room. This is the program’s first trip to state, after all.

The Spartans won the Sycamore Sectional by a combined score of 3-1. They have scored just 19 runs in five postseason games, including outbursts of six runs in their regional opener against Plano and seven runs in Monday’s Rock Island Supersectional against Metamora.

A trio of one-run wins against Kaneland, Burlington Central and Sycamore were sandwiched in between, with Brundage, a former starter, tasked with getting the final outs after right-handers Jason Sullivan (8-1, 1.75 ERA) and Jack Petrando (6-1, 1.83) set the tone.

“Jack and Jason have been incredible with going as far as they can in games, and then Andrew has just got the proper mindset and mentality,” catcher Brett Jungles said. “He doesn’t worry about much, doesn’t have much emotion and has just been getting the job done.”

St. Francis shored up its calling cards in the final week of the regular season after successive losses to Oswego East (7-2) and Marmion (8-3). The corner infield play of third baseman Tim

Jungles, a veteran of four postseasons – two as a regular – calls this Spartans team the most talented in bringing defense to match pitching.

“I think all nine of us out there want the ball hit to us and want to make a play,” he said.

“When we’re given an opportunity, we’re just stepping up, focusing and making plays to get out of each inning.”

That’s worked so far, as the offense lurks with enough speed and opportunistic bats.

Petrando, an outfielder when he’s not pitching, leads the team with a .370 average (34 for 92) and two home runs. Croci, who’s batting .320, is the RBI leader with 25. Alex Alcantara (.348), Sullivan (.317) and Jungles (.308) also are hitting more than .300.

Ultimately, that’s added up, especially in the past two weeks.

“We’re not surprised to be here at all,” Petrando said. “We knew we could do it. We don’t want to be done, that’s what’s great about it. We know we can do it and we don’t want to be done, and that’s why we’re at state right now.”

The recent promotion of outfielder Pin-Chieh Chen from the Cougars to the Cubs’ Double-A affiliate in Tennessee is among a recent flurry of roster moves. and overcame minor left hamstring tightness this week.

“A little cramping. Nothing bad,” he said. “I’m fine – 100 percent and ready to go.”

Naturally, it’s each player’s goal to say the same from the Wrigley Field clubhouse one day.

Early June usually lends itself to thoughts of advancement, as it often brings the first big wave of roster moves as veterans struggle or there are injuries at other levels.

On Monday, Chen’s nameplate still hung above his old locker, but that was soon to change. Manager Mark Johnson wondered if he might not be back later this season, depending on the organization’s needs.

“You’re always anticipating something,” Johnson said.

GENEVA – Cougars clubhouse employees keep perfecting the nameplate game as transactions transform a roster in its biggest state of flux to date.

This week, the parent Cubs promoted outfielder Pin-Chieh Chen (Double-A Tennessee) and left-handed reliever Jeffry Antigua (Triple-A Iowa) in the latest series of moves.

“You know, we lost a couple guys we liked, but that’s part of the game.

You just roll with it,” reliever Justin Amlung said.

“You never know. With the draft coming up, you could have a lot of roster moves coming up soon.”

The Cubs make the second selection when Major League Baseball’s annual First-Year Player Draft opens with its first two rounds beginning at 6 p.m. today. Rounds three through 10 are set for Friday, with Rounds 11 through 40 to be held Saturday.

In a clubhouse environment where the TV is almost exclusively set to the MLB Network, players will be hard-pressed not to see some coverage of the event or ponder who a possible teammate in-waiting might be.

They’re doing their best to look past it and make sure they don’t wind up as a draft “miss” on future telecasts.

“During the season, it’s pretty much watch the big league games, learn from what they do, how they play the game,” said right fielder Reggie Golden, a second-round pick in 2010 who missed all but seven games last season with a left knee strain. “It’s just our season now.”

It’s unclear whether the Cubs’ first-round selection would join the Cougars this summer. Center fielder Albert Almora, the sixth overall pick in 2012, only debuted with the club late last month. He was targeted to begin the season in Kane County before suffering a broken hand bone during spring training.

Six Cougars named to MWL All-Star Team KANE COUNTY CHRONICLE BURLINGTON, Iowa – Dan Vogelbach’s first-inning home run put the Kane County Cougars on top, and they never looked back as they were in front throughout an 8-6 victory over the Burlington Bees on Wednesday night at Community Field.

Vogelbach’s blast came in the first inning with Albert Almora at first after he singled against starter Aaron Newcomb (1-4). Newcomb only lasted 2 2/3 innings as he coughed up three more in the top of the first with Jeimer Candelario knocking home Oliver Zapata with a base hit.

Pierce Johnson (4-4) worked five innings but allowed the Bees (22-31) to draw within one before he exited.

Sherman Johnson smoked a pair of solo homers to right while Burlington cashed in two unearned runs on a Zapata error in the fourth inning.

Three consecutive extra-base hits gave the Cougars (26-30) two runs in the sixth off Eduard Santos. Carlos Escobar doubled and scored on a triple from Marco Hernandez.

Zapata doubled to bring home Hernandez, handing the visitors a 7-4 lead.

Anthony Bemboom cracked a two-run homer against Eddie Orozco in the bottom of the sixth to make it a 7-6 contest, but Orozco tossed a scoreless seventh before Felix Pena (S, 1) returned from the disabled list to record the

final six outs.

Rock Shoulders capped the scoring with a sac fly in the top of the ninth.

Also, Reggie Golden drove home a pair with his second knock of the night.

The Cougars and Bees battle in Game 2 of their threegame set at 6:30 p.m. tonight at Community Field. Righthander Jose Rosario (0-1) starts for the Cougars against lefty Ryan Crowley (4-1). The Cougars return to Fifth Third Bank Ballpark at 6:30 p.m.

Earlier Wednesday, Vogelbach was named the starting designated hitter for the Western Division at the June 18 Midwest League All-Star Game at Dayton.

He’ll be joined by five teammates: reserves Bijan Rademacher (outfield) and Rock Shoulders, along with pitchers Tayler Scott, Nathan Dorris and Felix Pena.

Shoulders entered play Wednesday with a league-leading 12 home runs, while Dorris, a hard-throwing lefty, had compiled a 2.52 ERA in 14 appearances.

Krol makes MLB debut: Former Cougars lefty Ian Krol, a Neuqua Valley product, made his Major League debut for the Washington Nationals in Wednesday’s 10-1 home loss to the New York Mets.

Krol worked around a leadoff double and wild pitch to strike out the side in a scoreless sixth, fanning Daniel Murphy, David Wright and Lucas Duda – New York’s No. 2, 3 and 4 hitters.

Krol was a MWL All-Star in 2010.

Summer reading: Short stories to dive into

By HOLLEY SIMONS The Washington Post Short stories are like Brussels sprouts, says Mark LaFramboise, head buyer for Washington’s Politics and Prose bookstore: Once you’ve disliked one, you’re loath to try another. Yet “at the moment, we’re rich with a lot of really talented short-story writers, so it’s a good reason to explore the realm.”

This summer brings outstanding collections from literary newcomers (including Rebecca Lee’s “Bobcat”) and experienced essayists (does David Sedaris ring a bell?). Here are our favorite new anthologies:

‘Bobcat’ by Rebecca Lee (Publishes June 11) Jealousy. Infidelity. A poorly cooked terrine. These are just a few of the subjects you’ll find in the opening tale of Rebecca Lee’s debut collection, “Bobcat” ($15, Algonquin Books). All of Lee’s stories are clear, powerful and accessible, making the anthology an appropriate jumping-off point for readers hesitant to try short-form literature. Often dealing with clueless sophisticates with out-ofwhack priorities, Lee’s writings tackle modern themes: a college student whose bout with plagiarism isn’t as worrisome as her linguistics professor’s obscure past; a woman who seeks a translator to determine if the Romanian letters her fiance is receiving are from a sister or a secret lover. Proceed cautiously: Unexpected twists ahead.

‘Vampires in the Lemon Grove’

by Karen Russell (Published Feb. 12) Like her Pulitzer Prize-nominated novel “Swamplandia!,” about a family coping with the death of their alligator-wrestling mother, Karen Russell’s “Vampires in the Lemon Grove” mixes credible tales with elements of make-believe ($25, Alfred A. Knopf). Think phantasmal stories of young women in a silk factory whose bellies begin producing silk and a massage therapist who assuages a veteran’s pain by manipulating his tattoos. It’s almost hard to fathom that such a young talent – Russell is just 31 – could produce such powerful works of fiction in succession until you realize: Stranger things have happened.

‘The Fun Parts’ by Sam Lipsyte (Published March 5) Don’t let the title of Sam Lipsyte’s latest fool you: “The Fun Parts” is anything but lighthearted ($24, Farrar Straus Giroux). Though it’s laugh-so-hard-yousnort funny, the collection from The New York Times-bestselling author of “The Ask” recounts such caustic stories as a man with no remorse for cheating on his wife with a lesbian, and an overweight teenage boy who mercilessly bullies the only classmate larger than him. You almost feel bad for finding pleasure in such dysfunction, until you realize that you would never act in such an abhorrent manner and drift off into a lulling state of superiority.

‘Let’s Explore Diabetes With Owls’

by David Sedaris (Published April 23) Omitting essayist David Sedaris from a short-story round-up is a crime punishable by law in 12 states. Just when you thought things couldn’t get any more humiliating for the dysfunctional-family man, he’s back with 26 new anecdotes ($27, Little, Brown and Company). He covers his childhood foibles (capturing an endangered sea turtle only to malnourish it to death) and his far-flung escapades (traveling through the Australian countryside, trying not to be offensive) in his latest collection. As is signature Sedaris, every hysterical tale has a twinge of sadness to it, making each essay as

‘A Guide to Being Born’ by Ramona Ausubel (Published May 2) Here’s a fun game to play: Pick a sentence at random from “A Guide to Being Born” – Ramona Ausubel’s debut short-story collection – and try not to be moved by it ($27, Riverhead Books).

Whether she’s writing about grannies who mysteriously wake up aboard a cargo ship or parents who plant their disabled daughter’s extracted mammary glands, Ausubel is deliberate with her words and uses them sparingly. Her austerity is matched only by her psychedelic plot lines. Reading a story in one sitting is like watching Pablo Picasso paint a portrait from start to finish: Just when you think the picture is getting clearer, it only becomes more complex.

‘The Peripatetic Coffin’ by Ethan Rutherford (Published May 7) Admittedly, we weren’t the biggest fans of Ethan Rutherford’s title story – the plotline is as murky as the waters his submarine-bound characters attempt to navigate. But the remaining stories are redemptive in their painstaking attention to the human condition ($14, Ecco). One in particular stands out: “A Mugging,” which follows a husband and wife who cope in their own ways after being physically assaulted and robbed. She through attempts at intimacy and he through a glass of whiskey.

Pain signals tell our brain where and how much it hurts Dear Doctor K: Let’s say I stub my toe. How does my brain know where it hurts and how bad?

Dear Reader: Pain serves as the body’s warning system. It alerts you to an injury or when something, such as an infection, has gone wrong inside your body.

Pain can also help in healing.

It tells you to avoid touching a wound or using a joint that’s damaged. But in order to respond appropriately, your brain must identify the location and severity of your pain.

Pain that stems from injury to body tissue is known as nociceptive pain. Examples include burns, sprains, broken bones and inflammation from an infection or arthritis.

Pain from such injury is triggered by damage to little structures called nociceptors that are part of the nerve endings in the injured area. A pain-sensitive area of the body such as your fingertip or tongue has thousands of nociceptors in a tiny fraction of a square inch.

If you suffer a papercut, for example, the nociceptors in the nerve endings in the skin of your fingers are stimulated by

Pain signals are carried by two types of nerve fibers. The A-delta fibers carry the first, sharp pain you feel. The C fibers carry the dull, throbbing pain that follows.

Nerve fibers throughout the body connect to the spinal cord.

(If the pain is in your head, nerve fibers connect directly to your brain.) In the spinal cord, incoming messages can be amplified, dampened or blocked altogether.

Pain signals reach different parts of the brain. Some signals reach the part of the brain that controls spatial awareness. It tells us where in the body a pain signal is coming from. Other

signals travel to the part of the brain that generates and controls emotion. Pain signals also reach the hypothalamus, a part of the brain that controls sleep and temperature regulation.

The pain we feel can be modified by chemical signals in the spinal cord and in the brain. We know about some of them, but there are probably others that we haven’t discovered yet.

Indeed, little more than 100 years ago we didn’t really know anything about how we felt pain. Human beings have been on Earth for 40,000 years, yet all we knew until 100 years ago was that sometimes we hurt.

Scientific research has taught us many things about how we feel pain, and some of that understanding has translated into new treatments. Still, we have a great deal more to learn, particularly about chronic pain – and how to better relieve the suffering of so many people who live with it.

Last Saturday, I went to a movie with my boyfriend, and we went out for a pizza afterward.

While at the pizza parlor, we met another couple that are good friends of mine.

We were having a great conversation, and my boyfriend and I completely forgot about the time. To make a long story short, I was 45 minutes late getting home.

My parents were furious and blamed my boyfriend. They said it was his responsibility to get me home on time.

They are considering having me break up with him.

I think that I should be punished for abusing curfew, but I’m the one to blame, not my boyfriend.

How do you see it? – Nameless, Levittown, Pa. Dear Nameless: Your date has a responsibility to see that you do not break curfew, but the prime responsibility rests with you.

You are more at fault than your boyfriend and should be disciplined, and your parents should have a chat with your boyfriend to remind him of his responsibilities if he still wants to date their daughter.

Dear Abby: It is easy to watch or read the news and think people are awful and this world is going nowhere fast. At New Year’s, I made a resolution to try and DO something about how I view society. I decided I’d do 30 random acts of service for strangers.

I know it may seem small and insignificant, but at least I can say I’m trying to make this a better place to live. I’m hoping it will spread a message of love and caring in a world with too much hurt and violence. Ideally, one or two people will notice and pay it forward.

It’s spring, and so far I have volunteered as a math tutor at a local school and shoveled the snow off a neighbor’s sidewalk. But I’m already falling behind, and I’m struggling to come up with some good ideas. I know you and your readers often have creative suggestions. Can you suggest more acts of service I can do for strangers? – Trying To Be Nice Dear Trying To Be Nice: You could volunteer at a local food pantry. Or find an organization that delivers food to shut-ins and take meals to the clients they serve a couple of days a month.

Bridge experts, though, are always anticipating trouble, and in this way they manage more plus scores than those who always assume everything will work out perfectly.

In today’s deal, South opens and closes the auction with his three-spade bid. West leads the diamond 10. East wins with his ace and returns the diamond two. What should South do now?

The traditional requirements for a weak three-bid are two of the top three or three of the top five honors in the seven-card suit and 5-10 high-card points. These days the requirements have been lowered by many players, especially at favorable vulnerability.

But it does not hurt to have a textbook hand occasionally.

North thought about raising to four spades, but knew game was unlikely. And he hoped that East might balance, allowing North to double the opponents and gain a sizable penalty.

It is tempting for South to win the second trick on the board and immediately to play a trump.

However, with this layout he would go down. West would take the trick and give his partner a diamond ruff. East would cash the heart ace, and West would get a second trump trick.

South should anticipate the 5-2 diamond break. (In theory, if East had started with three diamonds, he would have returned his higher remaining diamond, not the two.) Before touching trumps, declarer should cash dummy’s top clubs and discard his third diamond.

10 DIY planters to dress up your garden

By JENNIFER NOONAN Zillow Why put plants in a boring pot, when you can make your own unique planter with materials you may already have on hand?

This list of 10 do-it-yourself planters will help inspire gardeners to reuse or repurpose items to save money in an eco-friendly manner.

1. Not just for spaghetti –

How many colanders do you come across at weekend yard sales? Fit one with a linked chain to create an appealing hanging planter for colorful pansies.

2. Radio flyer – A rusted wagon is reborn as a planter displaying pretty annuals. The wheels on the wagon mean the planter can be easily moved around the yard or garden to gather sun or serve as a showpiece.

3. Getting the boot – Pairs of red rain-boot planters can parade across a porch. Though “made for walking” (as the song goes), repurposed boots can be filled with a variety of herbs and geraniums in a matching hue. Contrasting flower colors would create an equally pleasing look.
