“Serving our communities to make them better places to live.”

MARENGO – The city could break ground on its wastewater treatment plant expansion in the fall, after the Marengo City Council recently opened the project again to construction bidders. The city already has sent its multimillion-dollar expansion to its aging wastewater plant along Route 23 to prospective bidders twice in the past three years. Officials even broke ground on the project last summer before a buried landfill on-site halted construction in September. But HR Green, the McHenry firm tasked with salvaging the project, unveiled a project redesign May 20 that will save the city money and incorporate newer treatment technology intended to better clean Marengo’s wastewater.

“It’s almost a good thing that the plug got pulled on the project last year for the effect on your bottom line.” Ed Coggin Project manager for HR Green “It’s almost a good thing that the plug got pulled on the project last year for the effect on your bottom line,” said Ed Coggin, a project manager for HR Green. Coggin presented the redesigned project for nearly an hour during a special council meeting May 20. He detailed the 10-year history of the project filled with setbacks and misfortune to the revamped council, which features five new members since the Sep-

tember construction stoppage. The new-look council authorized, 5-1, with two aldermen absent, HR Green to send the redesigned project to construction bidders. The firm hopes to receive bids by July, with a possible selection made by the council in September. Coggin said the new design works better for the city, since it avoids the buried landfill northeast of the existing plant entirely. The $9 million project also is $3 million under the original project budget. The loan from the Illinois Environmental Protection Agency used to finance the project also will carry a lower interest rate than last year. The redesign features new treatment technology that meets numerous environmental regulations and takes less space, Coggin said. The plant will include new classroom

space designed to draw students across the region interested in wastewater treatment to see firsthand an operational plant. The new plant also will match the daily pumping capacity of the existing plant, which pumps enough wastewater a day to serve 12,000 residents, Coggin said. The existing plant will be kept idle once the new plant is built. If the city adds development, the two plants can work together to pump 1.8 million gallons a day for treatment to accommodate a larger population, Coggin said. “There are a lot of industrial users that would find the additional pumping capacity attractive,” Coggin said. “Most communities don’t have the availability of extra capacity. You will end with something that is very valuable with the old plant that is there.”

Marengo annexes another property Despite environmental concerns, 340 acres west of Route 23 added to city limits By STEPHEN Di BENEDETTO sdibenedetto@shawmedia.com MARENGO – The ongoing debate between Marengo and Riley Township on whether the zoning changes included in Marengo’s controversial annexation agreement puts groundwater at risk now will be left for future regulators to decide. The council approved, 8-1, a deal May 28 that annexes A.R. Land Co.’s 340 acres west of Route 23 into Marengo’s limits and inches the city closer to Interstate 90 and to its goal of negotiating the construction of a tollway interchange. Aldermen then approved, 7-1, a variety of zoning changes that rezoned portions of the land to general business and allows A.R. Land to pursue sand and gravel mining and the development

of a compost facility, despite the environmental concerns raised by neighboring Riley Township. “If you vote to change the zoning despite all the evidence, you are in my opinion not doing the job the people entrusted you to do,” Riley Supervisor Karen Schnable read in a statement to the council May 28. Earlier this year, Schnable persuaded the McHenry-Lake Soil and Water Conservation District to intervene with Marengo’s annexation deal with A.R. Land. After a dispute with city officials, the conservation district eventually was allowed to canvass A.R. Land’s 340 acres and examine the soil’s ability to support future development. District officials released its findings earlier this month in a natural resources report

that raised concerns about the possibility of groundwater contamination. The conservation district cautioned that A.R. Land’s proposed 40-acre compost facility would need to be carefully executed to not disturb the groundwater. Two-thirds of the site rezoned general business also is unbuildable because of groundwater issues, the report found. Despite Schnable echoing those concerns May 28, the council approved the changes with a strong majority. H.R. Green, the city’s contracted engineers, also endorsed the zoning changes after reviewing the natural resources report. The McHenry firm agreed that A.R. Land’s soil raised concerns about future development but added the site still has developable land, City Manager Gary Boden said.

State and environmental regulators are the ones who will dictate whether A.R. Land can pursue its land-use changes, once the company decides to ramp up the development efforts, Boden said. “There are so many controls these days on groundwater and soil that are way above our authority,” Boden said. “H.R. Green put a perspective on it that there are legitimate concerns but not ones that are unresolvable.” The answer didn’t satisfy Schnable, who argued that Marengo was ditching its responsibilities toward residents. “They are going to let another government agency regulate their land and decide where to make development,” Schnable said. “They are passing the buck. They shouldn’t rely on someone else to make that decision.”

Huntley seniors look back at commencement By STEPHEN Di BENEDETTO sdibenedetto@shawmedia.com HUNTLEY – Miranda Peterson reminded her classmates Saturday that they were standing on the next stage of their lives. The memories of football games, classes, dances and even the random mustache-themed parties in the cafeteria that helped unite the graduating seniors at Huntley High School will live on, but also give way to new memories, the valedictorian said. “There is always another adventure, big or small, waiting to be undertaken,” Peterson said. “Where we are at now, there a lot of adventures before us.” Peterson and 465 other Huntley High graduates crossed the stage inside the Sears Centre Arena in Hoffmann Estates to receive their diplomas Saturday, marking a bittersweet end to their high

school careers. The moment is meant to celebrate the past but also look toward the future, said Salutatorian Peter Gorski. Many of Huntley High’s 2013 graduating class will go separate ways to pursue college, a career or military service. But they shouldn’t forget about the teachers, the faculty and friends that helped them reach graduation day, Gorski said. “We won’t forget our school’s quirkiness, sophistication and undeniable sense of humor, but now is the time to leave our high school days behind us,” Gorski said. “Most of us won’t even see each other again. Let this be a time to say our final goodbyes before we all leave the cradle of high school.” Gorski will leave for Drake University to study actuarial science. Peterson will leave for the University of Michigan to study aerospace engineer-

ing. Both credited the school’s teachers and families for helping them reach the next stage of their lives. The class itself accomplished success. The speech team placed third in state, the girl’s basketball team placed fourth, and the staff at Huntley High’s student newspaper, The Voice, won numerous accolades. In his welcome, District 158 Superintendent John Burkey expressed pride for the graduates and their accomplishments throughout their time at Huntley High. He later honored retiring Principal Dave Johnson for his 17 years of work as the high school’s top administrator. “You’re at a time in your life that a lot of people sitting around this arena wish they could go back to and relive again,” Burkey told the graduates. “You’re incredibly lucky Graduate Megan Schulz waves to the crowd Saturday after receiving at this point in time.” her diploma during the Huntley High School commencement.

Huntley grad earns return to nationals ON CAMPUS Barry Bottino Marcus Popenfoose made his first year at Auburn University look easy, qualifying for the NCAA outdoor track and field nationals in the shot put and discus. Getting back to nationals, however, has not been as easy. Popenfoose, a junior for the Tigers, will travel Sunday to Eugene, Ore., for next week’s national meet. He will throw Marcus the shot put at Popenfoose the NCAA meet after missing nationals a year ago. “I had some struggles,” said Popenfoose, a Huntley graduate. “It was mechanical stuff. I came into my sophomore year with big expectations. When I didn’t see results immediately, I tried to muscle every throw. That’s just not the way to do things.” Popenfoose made his junior season memorable last month when he unleashed a personal-best throw of 62 feet, 2½ inches to win the Southeastern Conference outdoor title in Columbia, Mo. “It’s definitely a great feeling,” said Popenfoose, who finished fifth at the conference’s outdoor meet last season. At last weekend’s NCAA East Regional in Greensboro, N.C., Popenfoose extended his season by placing 10th with a throw of 59-11 to earn a return trip to nationals. “It was a relief,” he said. “I made it my goal to get back there. I didn’t throw my best (at the regional), but I made it through.” Though winning the conference title was a career highlight, Popenfoose wants to make headlines at nationals. He hopes to earn All-America honors, which would mean a top-eight finish. “That’s the biggest stage,” he said. “That’s what I’ve always been most concerned about.” Popenfoose said he appreciates his return to the nation-

Huntley graduate Marcus Popenfoose, a junior at Auburn, qualified in the shot put for the NCAA outdoor track and field national meet next week in Eugene, Ore. al stage after having gone through difficult times. “You’re not going to do well all the time,” he said. “Everybody experiences peaks and valleys. You just have to work through the valleys to get to those peaks. If you’ve never failed, then success doesn’t taste as great.” Headed to Eugene: Notre Dame sophomore Carly Loeffel is among 24 qualifiers for the NCAA women’s outdoor nationals in the heptathlon. Loeffel, a Cary-Grove grad, automatically qualified for the event by placing second in last month’s Big East Conference

outdoor meet with 5,411 points. Loeffel, who won the event’s javelin competition (111-4) and tied for first in the high jump (5-6½), earned all-conference honors while helping Notre Dame’s women’s team win its second conference title in school history. Fellow C-G grad Eddy Gibbons, a junior, was a member of ND’s Big East champion men’s 4x800 relay team, which won the event in 7:34.19. He earned All-Big East honors by running the second leg of the relay for the Irish, who placed second as a team. Missouri Valley masters:

Cary-Grove grad Eric Aguilera (Illinois State) and Prairie Ridge’s Kevin Kaczmarski (Evansville) were chosen as All-Missouri Valley first-team baseball players in voting by the league’s head coaches. Aguilera, a senior outfielder, batted a team-high .346 for the Redbirds (39-19) while helping them to their first outright MVC regular-season championship in school history. Aguilera, who started every game for ISU, led the team in six offensive categories this season, including hits (80), home runs (seven), RBIs (58) and slugging percentage (.524).

Among MVC players, Aguilera led the league in RBIs and finished tied for second in hits with Kaczmarski. ISU advanced to last weekend’s conference tournament title game. Kaczmarski, a sophomore outfielder, was the leading hitter for the Aces (24-34) with a .339 batting average. He also paced Evansville in eight other offensive categories, including runs (48), stolen bases (15), doubles (15), home runs (six) and slugging percentage (.504). During last week’s MVC tournament, Kaczmarski hit a three-run walk off home run in Evansville’s 4-3 win against Bradley. Title time: Prairie Ridge grad Allison Holly was part of a University of Mary-Hardin Baylor women’s golf team that won its first NCAA Division III national title last month in Destin, Fla. The Crusaders won the championship by eight strokes for the second national title in UMHB women’s golf history. The school also won the 2000 NAIA championship. A junior, Holly played in six tournaments this season, including the West Region Invitational. In 11 rounds, Holly posted an average score of 85.64. Her best round was a 79 in September at the UMHB Lady Cru Fall Invitational. MAAC honoree: D-I Iona College freshman infielder Matt Byrne, a Cary-Grove grad, was named to the All-Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference second team in baseball last month. Byrne, who was chosen as a designated hitter, batted .317 in conference games while starting 36 times this season for the Gaels (8-43). Byrne, who batted .258 overall, scored 18 runs while tying for the team lead with 16 walks and ranking second in stolen bases (eight).

Marengo’s run ends at sectionals By BRIAN WEIDMAN bweidman@shawmedia.com ROCHELLE – The Marengo softball team needed one out to reach a supersectional. That out never came. Sterling rallied from four runs down with two outs in the bottom of the seventh inning to knock out the Indians with a 6-5 win Saturday in the championship game of the Class 3A Rochelle Sectional. Sitting with one base runner and two outs, down 5-1 in the seventh, Sterling’s offense came alive. Sterling (27-3) managed three straight singles, then things got weird. Sterling senior Stephanie Kester laced a sharp single to center, moving base runner Karlie Mellott from second to third, where she was held up by coach Rick Henderson. Shannon Long, however, rounded second and headed Marengo pitcher Bethany Hart winds up during the Class 3A Rochelle toward third, where Mellott already was waiting. softball sectional final.

Marengo center fielder Megan Semro had fielded Kester’s hit and fired it to catcher Taylor Carlson, who then tried to get Long with a throw to second as she scrambled back to the base. The throw, however, was a bit high and rolled all the way to the outfield fence. Mellott and Long scored easily, and Kester ran all the way around from first to score the game-winner. “Ninety-nine times out of a 100 we’re going to make a throw there,” Marengo coach Dwain Nance said. “But I’m proud of our girls. We battled and played well through six innings.” Marengo (29-10) had beaten Sterling, 2-1, in a sectional final a year ago. The Indians, who won a 3A title in 2011 and was second a year ago, seemed poised to continue along the postseason trail. They didn’t commit an error until the final inning,

and senior pitcher Bethany Hart was sailing along with a five-hitter heading into the seventh inning. “You’ve got to give Sterling credit,” Nance said. “They came out in the seventh inning and rattled off a bunch of hits with two outs. Good for them, and I wish them the best of luck.” Henderson had called his team together before the bottom of the seventh to put some positive thoughts in his players’ heads before they came to the plate. “I asked, ‘How many times in your career, seniors, have we scored two, three or four runs in an inning?’” Henderson said. “They couldn’t count ‘em – many, many times. Why not today? Why not right now? What a better time to do it than at the end. That’s all we talked about.” Abby Kissack led the Indians at the plate, going 2 for 4 with a double and two RBIs.
