by the end of 2013. The title, “One Brick at a Time,” reminds members of Albright that in order to build and achieve great things, they must work toward their goals piece by piece, said theatre company president Jennifer Ring. “We’ve been around for 40 years, which is not something a lot of theater companies can say,” she said. “Our goal is to give people an opportunity to explore something, some-

thing they’ve maybe never before experienced in their life.” Volunteers say the city has been a great fit for Albright. “We really like Batavia,” Collins said. “We like the people. They’re very supportive of us. Thank you, people of Batavia.” In the company’s 2013-14 season, which begins in September, members will pay tribute to the theater company’s anniversary by staging shows it performed between 1974 and 2004. “What’s always amazing to me is [how] things that were written 30, 40, 50 years ago still speak to audiences now,” Ring said. The next season will kick off with “Harvey” in September, followed by “Angel Street” in November, “Who’s Afraid of Virginia Woolf” in February and March, “The Curious Savage” in April and May and “Love Rides the Rail” in June. Albright also will perform a Christmas show in December. “We want to do different kinds of shows, and we think we’ve succeeded in doing different kinds of shows,” Collins said. “Stop in and see us.” For more information on The Albright Theatre Company, as a volunteer, a donor or to attend a performance, visit www.albrighttheatre .com.

BATAVIA – In the heart of Batavia’s downtown, just steps from city offices and local police, sits one of the area’s oldest and boldest stage companies. The Albright Theatre Company, home to 80 volunteer members, has become known for nearly four decades of cutting-edge theater productions. Albright began in 1974 with a membership of five people and an audience of eight. It first was housed in a converted church in Warrenville, moving to its Batavia location in 2001. The company performs at least six shows every year from its theater space above the Batavia Government Center, 100 N. Island Ave. Batavia. The not-for-profit organization relies on ticket sales, fundraisers and donations for funding. Albright’s volunteers do everything from building sets to directing to acting, making costumes, selling tickets and more. They run everything from the bottom up. “We are all volunteer,” said Jeannine Collins, box office manager. “We do it because we love it.” All are welcome to audition for a performance. Anyone interested in joining Albright can act or volunteer to help in a performance, paying $10 in annual dues to become a member. Albright has members of all ages from across the Tri-Cities and the surrounding area, and every member get to vote on the board of directors and the shows the company will perform. It’s currently staging “Beautiful Thing,” the story of a teenaged boy who falls for his male friend, and the complications and challenges that ensue from a misunderstood romance. “It’s all member-driven,” said Collins of the company’s performance selections. “We started small, and we grew, and the reason we grew is we do good stuff.” The production, in the midst of a nationwide debate over gay marriage rights, is poignant wrap to this company’s 39th season. And after May 11, when the stage lights go out and the scenery comes down until September, those 80 volunteers will continue to spread the word of Albright, and secure donation on the theatre comany’s behalf. Currently underway is the “One Brick at a Time” fundraiser, with a goal of raising $10,000 by the end of 2013 to complete a series of renovations to the theater company’s current space. Since they won’t be building a

GET TO KNOW: BEVERLY NICKELSON

Batavia author pens supernatural romance By NICOLE WESKERNA nweskerna@shawmedia.com BATAVIA – Author Beverly Nickelson, known also by her pen name, Nicki Elson, just published her second romance novel. In this book, she features a main character who isn’t human. “Divine Temptation,” which hit bookshelves on March 26, follows the developing romance between a divorced mother in her late 30s and an angel. Set in the western suburbs of Chicago, in an area much like the Tri-Cities, the story follows a woman who works at a church and starts to receive visits from an angel. As her relationship shifts with her ex-husband, her feelings for the angel start to grow. Meanwhile, Nickelson said something “evil is lurking,” adding suspense to the novel to keep the readers guessing what might happen next. Nickelson, who lives in Batavia, said while there’s a paranormal element in this latest story, she likes to write about reality. She believes in angels, she said, which is why she decided to make the romantic character an angel, as opposed to someone she found less believable, such as a vampire.

Pick up a copy of “Divine Temptation” at Gibby’s Wine Den, 1772 S. Randall Road, Suite 220, Geneva. The book also is available online for the Nook and Kindle, or can be purchased on Amazon.com. And speaking of vampires, Nickelson said it was the “Twilight”-inspired fervor for young adult paranormal fiction that sparked the creation of “Divine Temptation.” As she was reading it, the idea for her own story began to form. “The guy would come in and take over [the girl’s] life,” she said. “I wanted to see how a mature woman would handle that situation.” In 2010, Nickelson published her first novel, “Three Daves,” which is set in the

1980s on a college campus, inspired by Eastern Illinois University, where she attended school. But Nickelson hadn’t always planned to become a novelist. She pursued a business degree in finance and went on to get her master’s degree in business. While working in finance, she discovered that one of her favorite parts of her job was writing the quarterly report. “It was the summer after I turned 40 that I got serious about writing,” she said. “I thought, if I don’t do this now, I’m never going to.” She’s working that business experience into the setting of her next book, which will feature a main character getting caught up in an office romance, while working on a big investment consulting project. Nickelson, whose pen name is made up of the letters in her last name, started submitting short stories to online fan-fiction websites and was contacted by a publishing company, OmniFic Publishing. When Nickelson is not busy writing her latest novel, she’s raising her two teenage children and working part-time, Provided photo writing a newsletter for The Batavia author Beverly Nickelson writes novels under her pen name, Little Traveler in Geneva. ON WATCH Courtroom volunteers keep eye on victims’ interests By STEPHANIE KOHL There are about 3,000 domestic-violence cases ongoing in Kane County. Three thousand potential local victims of domestic abuses. Three thousand people who likely depend on the help of the court system to keep them safe. But they need not depend solely on the system. A group of local volunteers has made its mission to keep an eye the court process itself, as a “watch dog,” making sure legal proceedings are handled in the best interest those injured by the acts of domestic abuse. Fox Valley Court Watch, established in 2010, works to provide an impartial assessment of the effectiveness with which domestic-violence cases are handled in court, thereby promoting victim safety and abuser accountability. “Historically, there’s been a lot of mystique and mystery and misinformation,” said Jim Kintz of St. Charles, president of the Fox Valley Court Watch board of directors. “This [domestic abuse] is a crime, and it should be prosecuted and judged that way.” Fox Valley Court Watch was formed as an independent, nonprofit organization after several people approached Kintz, then a St. Charles police officer, about domestic-violence cases and how they were handled. Kintz contacted some friends, and they got the group started. “Even before the group was started, people would come to him for help, to ask for advice,” said fellow Court Watch volunteer and board member Roger Palmer of Batavia, who got involved in the effort through his friendship with Kintz. Now retired from the force, Kintz has made Court Watch his full-time passion. He is joined by about 20 volunteers who go to court and observe the process of both proceed-

Volunteers with Fox Valley Court Watch keep a persistent eye on the workings of an often-complicated domestic court process. The group is looking to train more volunteers to aid in the effort for both Kane and Kendall counties.

If you go A training session for new Fox Valley Court Watch volunteers will be offered from 8 a.m. to 4 p.m. Wednesday, May 1, at the St. Charles Police training room, 211 N. Riverside St. To register visit www.foxvalleycourtwatch.org.

ings and everyone’s behavior in the courtroom. But Kintz needs more help to cover the large number of cases in both Kane and Kendall counties. “[We’re looking for] people who are interested in seeing the criminal justice system treat victims fairly,” he said. Board Member Norm Turner attends court sessions three

or four times each month, depending on the trial. He originally was asked to volunteer because he also is a volunteer at the Community Crisis Center in Elgin, one of the oldest domestic-violence shelters in the state. “What I observe is the process,” Turner said. “I’m a huge person on time management. If time isn’t managed well, it takes a trial longer, and that costs taxpayers money.” Turner said he also observes how knowledgeable all parties are about the case. “I think that a volunteer needs good, strong listening skills,” he said. “Listen to what is said and know the process.” To help prepare new vol-

unteers for their service, periodic training sessions are offered. They include an introduction and overview of the program, descriptions and dynamics of domestic abuse and laws in Illinois, a lesson on court procedures, a presentation on the role of prosecutors and procedures of being a court watcher. Volunteers must be at least 18 years old and have an email address and daily email access. Volunteers set their own schedules, but each must commit to a minimum of one halfday session, on a weekday, per month, for at least six months. To further the mentoring relationship between new and experienced volunteers, Fox Valley Court Watch hosts

monthly meetings at 9:30 a.m. the fourth Wednesday of every month at the Batavia Public Library, 10 S. Batavia Ave., Batavia. New volunteers are given an opportunity to ask questions at these meetings, address concerns and work through challenges. Volunteers say that while the work of a domestic court “watch dog” is not typically pleasant, it’s tremendously satisfying, because it’s both important and effective. “We have received information that when there are court watchers in the courtrooms, there seems to be a change in the courtrooms,” Kintz said. “It does make a difference to have a court watch in there.”

Professionals estimate it will cost at least $3.1 million to repair the former First Baptist Church in downtown Batavia. The city wants to reuse the church building, at the corner of Washington and Wilson streets, which it has owned since 2005.

Repairs to former church estimated at more than $3M By ERIC SCHELKOPF eschelkopf@shawmedia.com BATAVIA – A firm is estimating it will cost at least $3.1 million to repair the former First Baptist Church building at the corner of Washington and Wilson streets in downtown Batavia so the building can be reused. The city has owned the facility since 2006, including the late 19th century original church, a north addition built

in the 1930s and a classroom wing built around 1959. The Batavia City Council recently hired Northbrook-based WJE to assess the building’s condition. WJE has inspected the building, and aldermen will review the firm’s recommendations as part of Tuesday’s joint meeting between the City Council’s Community Development and City Services committees. The firm recommended repairs be

made to the exterior and interior of the 1889 church, 1930s addition and 1959 classroom wing, as well as the building’s mechanical systems. The firm recommended the city budget between $3.1 million and $3.5 million for the work. “Much of the recommended repair work is dependent upon the future adaptive reuse of the building and the intended function,” the firm stated in its report.

However, the firm listed an estimated $775,000 in repairs that need to be done to prevent additional damage to the building materials or features. The repairs include a new roof, gutter repairs and new downspouts at the 1889 church; a new roof, scuppers and downspouts at the 1959 addition; masonry lintel repairs at the 1930s addition; and lintel repairs at the 1959 addition. Public Works Director

Gary Holm told aldermen that over the past few years, the city has performed routine maintenance to ensure the facility did not fall into a state of disrepair. “It has recently been identified that the original church structure is in need of significant roof repairs,” Holm said in a memo to aldermen. “Also, the adjacent church parking lot, which is now used for public parking, is in need of significant patching.”

Mystery novelist sets the scene in Geneva Annie Hansen might be the most mysterious woman in the Tri-Cities. That’s because this wife, mother and small business owner from Batavia spends her limited free time hatching plots and devising schemes for her soon-to-be published mystery novel series. The lives of the characters she’s conjured, from local and national headlines, come to settle in a fictional Geneva, but readers may recognize the shops of Third Street, the eclectic mix of boutiques and baristas, and the homey, walkable avenues. Her book, “Give Me Chocolate,” is her first published novel, which will be released in May. Already at work on the second story in the series, Hansen took a few minutes to chat with Republican managing editor Sherri Dauskurdas about the book, it’s familiar setting and the hobby that’s grown into something more.

FYI ... “Give Me Chocolate” will be sold on www.barnesandnoble.com, www.amazon.com and www. weavingdreamspublishing.com. It will also be sold at Townhouse Books and by request at local bookstores. A book-launch party will be free and open to the public at 1 p.m. May 11 at the Geneva History Center. Hansen will read from “Give Me Chocolate” and sign copies. Provided image

“Give Me Chocolate,” set in Geneva, launches in May and will be available online and at Town House Books in St. Charles. Author Annie Hansen says readers from the area will recognize a variety of popular Third Street locations. Provided photo

Annie Hansen of Batavia has authored her first novel, a mystery set in Geneva, with characters inspired by the Laci Peterson murder.

Sherri Dauskurdas: Why mysteries?

Annie Hansen: I’ve always loved reading mysteries. Growing up, I read all of the Nancy Drew books and watched “Murder She Wrote.” Reading and writing are my two favorite passions. My specialty is “cozy mystery.” It’s a sub-genre of crime fiction where the violence and sex are downplayed. The draw of the mystery is still there, but the focus is more on the community and the characters. This is not like a CSI story where you will see lots of blood and gore. There are murders, but you will only get a quick snapshot of the violence. SD: Why Geneva for this first book? What did the city lend to the story, as a

setting? AH: For me, when I’m writing a story, location always comes first. It’s the driving force that forms the story. When I moved here, I visited Third Street, and The Kelly Clark Mystery Series began to take shape in my mind. In the series, Kelly is trying to start her life over after husband goes to jail for attempting to murder his pregnant mistress. This series was influenced by the

Laci Peterson/Scott Peterson/Amber Frey case from 2001. That particular story has always haunted me. I’ve always wondered, if Laci had survived those horrific events, where would she go? How would she move on with her life? Could she ever trust again? Could she ever love again? And what if she could reunite with her extended family who so obviously loved and adored her? I saw Kelly living on Third Street back in her hometown of Geneva after she was able to escape her marriage. Kelly will have to live forever with the stigma of once being married to a violent man who is now incarcerated and due for release at some point in the

future. Kelly’s sister is the owner of a specialty dessert store, Chocolate Love, in downtown Geneva and allows Kelly to live in the apartment above the store rent free while she’s trying to get back on her feet. I thought Third Street would be a great place for Kelly to try and blend in, yet also be constantly exposed to the community. SD: Will local readers be able to find local references in the text? AH: Readers will definitely be able to spot local venues. The book is a combination of real-life locations mixed with ones I’ve created for the story. Though, even the imaginary locations still may be influenced by actual stores on Third Street. [Characters] will be doing lots of activities together, such as going out to dinner, running on the Fox, taking yoga classes. I

plan to make the reoccurring characters and the Tri-Cities the focus of the story-line. When I moved to this area, I fell in love with the community, The Fox River, Geneva’s Third Street and The Historic Districts of Batavia, Geneva and St. Charles. I’m hoping the readers will too. SD: Is it a mystery series in which the lead characters are the same but each book is separate and complete, as is the case of Nancy Drew? Or does the story, itself, continue through the books? AH: Each book will have a definite wrap-up for the murder mystery at hand. Kelly and her sister, Nikki, fall into becoming somewhat of an investigative team to help the police try and solve the murder in each book. So for the smaller mystery, it’ll wrap up at the end of each book. However, Kelly’s back story, what I like to call the “big mystery,” and clues about how her past will affect her future will be woven into each book. I’ll be dropping little breadcrumbs in each book to wind you through the whole story of who Kelly Clark really is. By the end of the series, you’ll have the whole picture.

any solace in the loss, it was that they made Starai work a little harder this time, forcing him to throw more than 90 pitches. “They were a little more patient at the plate,” Starai said. “It got us a little deeper into counts, but we were able to get the job done today anyway.” Starai’s two wins against the Bulldogs have put the Saints (10-5, 8-2) a game ahead of them in the conference standings heading into the final game of the series Wednesday at Batavia, weather-permitting. Starai did not allow a hit this time around until Aaron Hurd beat out a dribbler in the fifth inning. The only solid hit the Bulldogs had was Luke Horton’s single to right leading off the sev-

enth. Horton got as far as third base with two outs, but Starai struck out Hurd to end the game. Starai’s stellar outing spoiled an almost equally impressive pitching performance by Batavia junior Colby Green (1-1), who allowed only one unearned run in six innings. Green still had to accept some blame for the run, since he hit Jack Dellostritto to give the Saints a baserunner in the fifth and then made a pickoff attempt that was too hot for Horton to handle at first. Dellostritto moved to third on a groundout and scored when shortstop Billy Zwick uncharacteristically booted Joe Hoscheit’s grounder up the middle. Otherwise, Green hand-

cuffed East with a curveball he threw consistently for strikes and a fastball that he kept low and on the outside corner of the plate, limiting them to four hits. He walked one and struck out three. “He was hitting his spots and causing us a little bit of trouble,” East coach Len Asquini said. “He’s a tough little pitcher. We’ll have our hands full with him next year, too.” Holm, meanwhile, is hoping he’s seen the last of Starai, a senior. “We’ve got to run home and get the tarp on so we don’t see him again next week,” Holm said, not entirely in jest. “If we don’t see them Wednesday, we’ll probably see him next week or the week after.”

No bragging rights Batavia’s Alexis Bryl (7) kicks the ball to a teammate during their game at Geneva April 23. The contest would end in a draw between the rivals.

It’s not often that a baseball team faces the same starting pitcher in the first two games of a series, but that’s the unusual situation Batavia found itself in April 22 after rain washed away a pair of scheduled Upstate Eight Conference River Division games against St. Charles East last week. Unfortunately for the Bulldogs (13-3, 7-3 UEC River), they didn’t have any better luck against right-hander Matt Starai in a 1-0 loss this week than they did in the April 16 4-0 defeat. Starai (50) shut out Batavia on two hits, just as he did in the series opener. “We went with a similar game plan – attacked a lot on

the hands,” Starai said. “It worked the last time, so we wanted to do something at least similar this time. We might have thrown a couple more breaking balls.” Those breaking balls complemented a fastball that topped out at 91 mph on at least one radar gun and was consistently in the upper 80s. Starai struck out five and walked two. “We weren’t striking out, we just weren’t getting very good swings on things,” Batavia coach Matt Holm said. “It’s a broken record. It’s the same thing I said last time. He’s a very good pitcher. If he gets ahead in the count, he’s got all four pitches he can throw for strikes, so you’re in trouble.” If the Bulldogs could take

New golf season, new fresh look for Pottawatomie Spring is definitely the time of new beginnings, and nowhere is that more obvious than at the recently remodeled and upgraded pro shop at the park district’s award-winning Pottawatomie Golf Course. Gone are the dark wooden cases which once contained clothing and equipment. In their place a r e b r i g h t , Erika open-slat walls Young where merchandise from shirts to jackets, shoes to hats is placed within easy reach. The dazzling array of Pottawatomie Golf Course logo wear — along with clothing by Footjoy and Nike, Titleist balls and gloves, and Datrek pull carts and bags — provides everything a golfer could need for a day’s outing. The same goes for the customer service area, where

the old wood countertop and cabinetry has been enlarged and replaced by a gleaming, sleek glass countertop, as well as food and beverage service area. A big-screen TV draws visitors to the expanded café area. News, sports and talk shows not your thing? Enjoy enticing views from the shop’s outdoor patio, where umbrella tables invite golfers to relax and relive their best shots after a round. Nestled behind the pro shop’s stunning stone fireplace, sets of Tour Edge men’s, women’s and seniors’ clubs are on display, and golfers contemplating changing or upgrading their equipment can get expert advise on the proper fit and grips. Clubs can be taken “out for a spin” on the course prior to purchase to make sure they’re a perfect match. The remodeling project began in January, according to Ron Skubisz, golf course pro and manager. From con-

cept to completion, the project was a team effort, and Skubisz gives kudos to Denise Gillett-Parchert, golf course superintendent, and Randy Braun, facilities manager. Even the pro shop’s artwork has a park district connection. Visitors’ attention immediately is drawn to a striking monochromatic painting based on the 15-foot bronze statue, “Ekwabet,” which stands just downriver from the golf course. This representation of a member of the Native American tribe that first settled the area was painted especially for the remodeled pro shop by park district employee Bill Griffiths. Along with imagery from the course’s nationally-recognized, Audubon-certified natural setting, Griffiths pays homage to the area’s original settlers and the course’s designer, Robert Trent Jones. The remodeling project embodies the esteem in which Pottawatomie Golf Course is

people care more about their course. They truly love this place.”

Cougars can’t hold on to lead against Peoria By VINNIE DUBER editorial@kcchronicle.com GENEVA – Despite another strong outing by a starting pitcher and an early fourrun lead, the Kane County Cougars bullpen couldn’t close the deal Monday. Cougars starter Michael Heecsh went six innings and allowed just two runs against the visiting Peoria Chiefs, but the Chiefs tagged the Kane County bullpen for five runs in the top of the seventh and held on to hand the Cougars a 9-6 defeat at Fifth Third Bank Ballpark. Heesch turned in a solid performance for the second time in three starts and bounced back nicely from a rough outing last time out. The left-hander struck out five and lowered his ERA to 3.21 on the season. He yielded to Brian Smith to start the seventh, but the reliever had a nightmarish afternoon, facing eight batters, retiring

only two and giving up five runs. When Heesch left, the Cougars led 5-2. But when Matt Iannazzo – the seventh inning’s second relief pitcher – finally ended the inning, it was a 7-5 Peoria advantage. Only one of the runs Smith surrendered in the seventh was earned thanks to an error, but the damage speaks for itself. Iannazzo continued the trend, walking the first two batters he faced. The first free pass loaded the bases, and the second forced in a run. “In this league and lower levels, if you throw strikes and catch the ball, usually you’re in pretty good shape,” Cougars manager Mark Johnson said. “[If] they hit it out of the park, they hit it out of the park, but we have to throw strikes. ... You’ve got to make them put it in play, especially at this level. You can’t give them too much credit. For whatever reason, we just couldn’t get it over the plate.”

Cougars first baseman Dan Vogelbach hit a solo home run in the bottom of the seventh to pull the Cougars within one, but the Chiefs scored a pair of insurance runs in the ninth off Iannazzo to cement their win. The bullpen erased a good day for Heesch, the latest in a recent string of solid outings by Cougars starting pitchers. Heesch credits the rotation’s recent success to more consistency in the schedule. “With all the rainouts and everything, we’re kind of getting back into a rotation, so we’ll see this time

training early on. It’s nice in the middle of the season but not early on when you’re trying to establish a rhythm. But I think we’ve handled it pretty well as a staff.”
