LEMONT – A troubling period compelled Lemont resident Glen Missaggia to pour his heart and soul into his involvement with the Knights of Columbus.

Last year, Missaggia’s wife died of cancer. The Knights provided support and fraternity for him during this difficult time, he said.

“You get back much more than what you put into it,” Missaggia said of his involvement with the organization.

“There’s a lot of camaraderie.”

The fellowship of other members isn’t the only benefit Missaggia has realized. He will receive the Victor Cardosi Award for charity, unity and community April 20 from the Diocese of Joliet Chapter of the Knights of Columbus.

“Glen is a quiet man who doesn’t seek the limelight,” said Lemont Knights of Columbus member Bob Porter in his nomination entry for Missaggia. “He is the first volunteer arriving on all K of C projects and the last one to leave.”

A member of St. Alphonsus Roman Catholic Church, Missaggia serves as a lector, member of the choir, handbell player and Eucharistic minister.

During his 11 years with the Knights, he has held the titles of deputy grand knight and grand knight. He also has worked as the chairman for projects concerning membership, intellectual disability, Right for Life, the Kops-n-Kids program and the Mother Theresa annual picnic bingo game.

LEMONT – Family-owned businesses Aurora Rose boutique and Ace Hardware recently hosted ribbon cuttings for new Lemont locations.

The events provide anecdotal evidence to support village-cited numbers that indicate business growth in Lemont is on the rise.

“It felt like the right place to be,” said Kimberly Peters of Burbank, who owns Aurora Rose with her daughter, Amber.

The mother-daughter team was drawn to the charm of Lemont’s historic downtown as the location of their Stephen Street store. The artisan gift shop carries locally made specialty foods, bath products and accessories.

Prior to opening Aurora Rose, Kimberly worked in financial services and Amber had a career in real estate. In the wake the recession, however, both women found themselves unemployed. Kimberly saw this loss as an opportunity to start a boutique, something she’d wanted to do for years.

Originally located in Willow Springs, Aurora Rose moved to the village last fall, with its first location closing only eight days before the shop in Lemont opened Nov. 24.

Kimberly and Amber held an open house and ribbon cutting to introduce themselves to the community April 16.

A few days before Aurora Rose’s event, Ace Hardware of

Lemont hosted a grand opening from April 12 to 14. The festivities included three days of sales and promotions, a visit from home improvement expert Lou Manfredini of WGN radio and “Today” show fame, and a ribbon cutting featuring Lemont Mayor Brian Reaves and village trustees.

Like Aurora Rose, Ace opened in late 2012. Co-owners and spouses Dan and Pattie Harris previously owned an Ace location in Orland Park and have one in Palos Heights.

The new Lemont store is on State Street.

“Lemont was a market that we saw a great opportunity to grow into,” said Dan. The village worked with Ace for more than a year to solidify the business’s presence in Lemont, said Reaves, who added that the only similar store in the community is Peterson’s Hardware.

A hardware store is likely to fare well in Lemont, said Dan, because the village has a high home ownership rate, meaning that residents are more likely to have a vested interest in home improvement. There are also a variety of types of homes in the village.

Thus far, seven businesses have opened in Lemont in 2013, said Village Administrator Ben Wehmeier. There are 21 businesses that have opened in the village in 2012, meaning that annual business growth is slightly ahead of last year’s pace.

“The residents of Lemont support their local businesses,” said Reaves.

Lemont library enters ‘a brave new digital world’

By ANNA SCHIER aschier@shawmedia.com LEMONT – The Lemont Public Library may have more in common with an Apple Store than a bookstore in a year or two.

Increasingly in recent years, the Lemont Public Library District has worked to curate and program a facility for the 21st century reader by incorporating technology into its landscape.

“Things have really changed quickly,” said Library Director Sandi Pointon.

“If all we are about is books, we’ll become a museum.”

In honor of National Library Week, April 14 to 20, the library is hosting several programs exploring digital devices and products under the

theme “It’s a brave new digital world.”

Chief among these is the Bring Your Own Device sessions, a series of classes teaching device and product use for the iPad, Kindle Fire, Nook and Android tablets.

The BYOD sessions are designed to highlight digital services that offer content such as ebooks, magazines, audio and independent film, all of which are accessible for free with a public library card.

The library is also conducting demonstrations of various products and devices throughout the week.

Children’s programs are now using iPad technology, projecting books from an iPad onto a big-screen TV for increased visibility during story time.

Recently, the library created a new part-time position for an instructor who will

exclusively teach iPad tutorials.

Pointon, who admits to doing 95 percent of her reading on-screen, said she doesn’t see technology as a threat.

Rather, she sees it as a tool and a chance for the library to expand its services, venturing out into that brave new digital world.

“There’s more demand than we can keep up with,” she said.

The library recently began offering web-based printing.

It is in the process of upgrading its WiFi. One of the library catalogs is an in-facility iPad, said IT manager Fernando Alfonso, and the district is considering adding a mobile computer lab as well.

In order to meet the growing demand for a digital media experience, the district is moving away from traditional library amenities such as a comprehensive print magazine collection. Instead of subscribing to the print editions, the library will place several tablets in the magazine section to provide easy access to digital publications, the need for which has eclipsed that for print magazines.

The library is not alone in its strategy. Lemont Family Dental recently replaced its print magazines with iPads, using a library card account to provide patients with a digital magazine collection.

LEMONT – Lemont High School District 210 employees have a new way to save for retirement.

The Board of Education unanimously adopted a second district deferred compensation plan during its April 15 meeting.

The 457 (b) plan offers district employees the choice to defer compensation at their own cost, interim business manager David Middleton said. The plan has broader participation perimeters than the district’s existing option, which is only available to employees with a public pension.

“I’ve never seen a 457 plan in a school,” said board Secretary

Michael Shackel. “Typically, municipal employees have a 457.”

Adopting the new plan brings no additional cost to the district and allows employees to participate in the program in bulk to aggregate the cost.

Also at Monday’s meeting, the board voted unanimously to set the district capitalization threshold at $2,000. Middleton said school district threshold settings typically range from $1,000 to $5,000.

Additionally, the board voted to establish the head coaches at Lemont High School for the 2013-14 winter season and approved contracts for the school photographer, athletics photographer and copier. The board also unanimously approved a settlement agreement.

LEMONT – Mere minutes after Lemont resident Christine Kickels crossed the finish line at the 2013 Boston Marathon, she heard the explosions.

Kickels was one block from the site of the detonation this week of what CNN is reporting to be two pressure-cooker bombs. The blasts killed three, including an 8-year-old boy, and sent 183 to the hospital.

“People were calm, but it was starting to set in,” Kickels said of the moments after the explosion.

Trapped in a gated block, Kickels initially wondered if the noise was a water or oxygen tank that had burst.

She looked to nearby television crews for some indication of the situation’s severity before deciding to walk back to her hotel, which was on the same block as the explosion, to meet her family.

Soon she heard the first-re-

sponders. Ambulances and firetrucks tore past her toward the site of the blast.

“It was unreal,” Kickels said. “I must have seen 20 ambulances.”

Back at the hotel, Kickel’s sister, Amy Bugala, awaited her return.

Bugala had finished the race 45 minutes prior to the explosion and was in her hotel room when the bombs went off.

“We didn’t know where Christine was,” said Bugala.

She waited 15 minutes for her sister. Bugala said that as the moments passed, she never stopped believing that everything would be all right.

“I knew inside that she was going to be walking through those doors soon,” Bugala said.

The sisters were participating in the marathon with the Yankee Runners group of Oak Forest.

The 2013 race was Kickel’s first Boston Marathon and Bugala’s third. Both hope to participate in the event again.

Tri County Special Recreation Association offers fun opportunities Do you know what the Tri County Special Recreation Association is and what it provides our community?

Tri County SRA provides recreational opportunities for children, teens, and adults with special needs and abilities by offering a full range of programs including Special Olympics, adaptive sports, dances, special events, day camps, COMMUNITY social clubs and more. It is a VOICE cooperative extension of the Karen village of Romeoville, Lockport Township Park District Gestautas and the Lemont Park District.

I’d like to fill you in on what we have going on in the weeks ahead.

Summer is coming up quickly. Our popular day camp programs offer opportunities to inject fun, activity and camaraderie into those long days.

For the 3- to 7-year olds, we have Little Astronauts including trips to pools, museums and parks, as well as arts and crafts, music and sports. For 8- to 12-year-olds, check out Camp-ORama with swimming, outdoor games, music, crafts and field trips.

Both programs will be held at the Lemont Park District.

Registration deadline for both programs is May 14 for the June 4-14 session and May 27 for the June 17-28 session.

For 13- to 19-year-olds, we offer Totally Teens A & B, helping to create independence by teaching campers how to shop, swim or cook on their own and in doing so, provide socialization. Registration deadline is May 20 for the June 10-21 session and June 3 for the June 24-July 3 session. July sessions are also available for all programs.

We also offer the opportunity for your service club or school to host our disability awareness program. This is an educational, hands-on training experience that promotes sensitivity, acceptance and understanding of different perspectives as these issues relate to individuals who have special needs.

Finally, our annual golf outing will take place June 21 at Prairie Bluff Public Golf Club in Crest Hill. We are looking for community support as golfers, donors and/or volunteers. It’s a fun day and a way to support a great community association.

People from both Lemont and Bolingbrook recently stepped up big time for the granddaughter of Carl Churulo, chief of the Lemont Fire Protection District. Katie Churulo, 4 years of age, has been diagnosed with two unrelated diseases: truncus arteriosus and hemophagocytic lymphohistiocytosis. A benefit held April 5 at Tailgaters Sports Bar & Grill in Bolingbrook raised more than $21,000. This is an extraordinary response to people who are obviously dear to the hearts of many.

The aspiring artists at Old Quarry Middle School are displaying their creations until April 28 at the Lemont Center for the Arts and selling them to raise money for the district educational foundation. More than 100 works of art are available for viewing and purchase. Each piece costs $10. Proceeds from all sales will benefit the Lemont-Bromberek Combined School District 113A Educational Foundation. The center is in Lemont Village Square, 1243 State St., Unit 101. Gallery hours for the center are noon to 4 p.m. Fridays and Sundays and 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. Saturdays.

8NEWS BRIEFS Focus of police forum is college campus safety LEMONT – Campus Fighting Chance will hold a survival program for college freshmen from 1 to 4 p.m. Wednesday, April 24, at the Lemont Police Department, according to a news release from the Lemont Junior Woman’s Club, which is hosting the event.

The class will teach students to safely travel across campus, protect portable property and live in a dorm environment in addition to addressing ATM safety, identity protection and campus socializing. Instructors include representatives from the Lemont Police Department, Illinois State Police, Guardian Angel Community Services and Emergency Room Nurses Association.

High school reports prom was a success LEMONT – A record number of Lemont High School students attended the school’s 2013 prom April 12 at Bobak’s at Seven Bridg-

“It was a really successful event,” said Assistant Principal David Clark at the April 15 Lemont High School District 210 Board of Education meeting. “Everybody just danced and had fun.”

Clark said the 2013 prom, which drew 568 students, was completely incident-free.

“The age demographics of Lemont may change somewhat,” he said. “I’m just concerned.”

Nevertheless, Birkenmaier said administrators believe that by 2017, every class in D113A will contain no more than 29 students.

Board members voted in favor of the plan with the exception of Aurelio.

The financial plan must now be approved by the Illinois State Board of Education. The state board is scheduled to meet May 16. If the district can prepare the plan for state review before the end of April, ISBE can consider plan approval at its May meeting.

LEMONT – The Lemont-Bromberek Combined School District 113A Board of Education voted Tuesday to approve the district’s fiveyear strategic plan and its financial plan.

The strategic plan is a conceptual design of what the district hopes to achieve in the next five years. The financial plan projects a three-year overview of the district’s expected financial developments.

D113A officials began work on the strategic plan last fall. It was written to address several areas targeted for growth and improvement within the district. These include leadership, organization, student-centered focus, curriculum, instruction, classroom technology, communications, partnerships,

outreach and operations.

“This was a very difficult process,” board President Dave Molitor said. “Considering revenues that we had, I think the administration did a phenomenal job.”

The board voted unanimously to approve the strategic plan. Board member Karen Siston was not in attendance.

During the course of developing the strategic plan, the district also determined a new mission statement, which also was unanimously approved by the board Tuesday.

The statement reads: “The mission of District 113A is to provide students with an academic, social and emotional foundation to lead a productive and fulfilling life.”

After the approval of the strategic plan, the board discussed specifics surrounding the financial plan.

Runner in Boston: ‘This isn’t right’

By ALEX RUPPENTHAL aruppenthal@shawmedia.com NAPERVILLE – Christine Bell was rounding the final turn of the Boston Marathon when she heard the two explosions.

“I heard it go off,” she said.

“Two of them.”

She then saw a cloud of white smoke and thought, “This isn’t right.”

Bell, of Naperville, was about 400 meters from completing the marathon when two explosions went off at the finish line of Monday’s race, killing at least three and injuring dozens. Someone nearby said the explosion sounded like a subway.

With the finish so close, Bell — a teacher at Naperville Central High School — kept running. She saw a bunch of police officers start to run toward the scene “like in a movie,” she said.

Bell reached a point about 200 meters from the finish before one of those officers told her to stop.

“They stopped us and said, ‘Just wait,’” said Bell, who was told the bombs went off in garbage cans.

After being pushed to the side, the runners were then told to move backward, Bell said. She reached the intersection of Boylston and Hereford streets, where she had made the final turn. But she didn’t know where to go, so she started asking people for help.

A man who lived nearby gave her a sweatshirt to keep warm. Other runners around her were given trash bags, she said.

Eventually, Bell found her way back to the bus, where her bag was being held before returning to her hotel.

Bell, 45, has run dozens of marathons and is a member of the Dick Pond Fast Track Racing Team, which sent about 25 runners to the marathon, she said. The team is sponsored

by Dick Pond Athletics, a running and sporting goods store with five Chicago-area locations, including one in Lisle.

Eric Brechtel, manager of the Lisle location, was stand-

ing in front of the LensCrafters on Boylston Street for almost four hours of the race, waiting for his girlfriend, Amy Burns, to reach the finish line.

Burns crossed the line after 3 hours, 55 minutes and 11 seconds. Brechtel and Burns then made the five-minute walk to their hotel. They didn’t hear the news until they turned on the TV. About 10 minutes after Brechtel and Burns left the finish line area, the explosions erupted.

“I stood right in front of all those shops for like, four hours today, right where it happened,” Brechtel said

Monday afternoon.

Initially, Brechtel had difficulty notifying people that he and Burns were OK. “I just got cellphone service,” Brechtel said about three hours after Burns finished. “I couldn’t even send texts. I would get a bunch of texts in waves, 10 or 15 in a row, but I couldn’t respond to any of them.”

Brechtel said the hotel where he and Burns are staying, the Boston Park Plaza Hotel & Towers near the finish line, was on lockdown and that he and Burns had been instructed to stay in their room.

Emmett’s great for a hearty meal, craft brew If you’re walking along Main Street in downtown Downers Grove, Emmett’s Ale House is bound to attract your attention. The bright, yellow brick exterior and yellow-andblack-striped awnings give it an old-fashioned yet well-maintained look that’s very inviting.

And if you’ve worked up an appetite while strolling through town, the dining experience you’ll find inside is a good match for the fun, stylish exterior.

We were looking for a place to get a nice meal and have a couple drinks on a weekend evening without feeling like we’d stumbled into a frat party.

Looking over the menu, I was tempted by the tenderloin medallions (encrusted with horseradish, pesto and balsamic Bordelaise sauce) and the portobello steak (served with balsamic crusted portobello mushrooms and roasted tomato cream sauce).

But I was in the mood for something slightly spicy, and opted for the Southwest chicken sausage pasta. Fortunately, I was very hungry, because the portion that arrived was unquestionably generous. The sausage and bow-tie pasta were served in a spicy marinara sauce along with broccoli, tomatoes, onions, mushrooms and red peppers. The combination of flavors – enhanced but not overwhelmed by the spiciness – made for an enjoyable meal that had a slightly different aspect with each bite.

Typically, a hearty pasta dish like that calls for a good wine, but I couldn’t resist a chance to sample an Emmett’s brew. I went for the McCarthy Red Ale, which was mild but flavorful, and a perfect counterpoint for the marinara sauce.

My dining companion opted to order off the specials list and selected the shepherd’s pie, along with a side of sweet potato fries. The shepherd’s pie consisted of a generous helping of deliciously savory mashed potatoes atop a hearty beef stew. With the unseasonably cold spring we’ve had, it was just the right meal for the day.

ents that are sustainable,” the menu says, emphasizing a complete absence of transfat oils in the preparation of dishes. “We use … local produce when in season, and we also utilize sustainable practices in our breweries by donating our spent grain to local farmers as a food source for livestock.”

Now that’s a dining experience you can feel good about.

On Tuesday, the Indians pounded out 11 more hits in a 13-0 victory over Tinley Park in six innings.

“From top to bottom, it seems every game, someone else steps up,” said Lemont coach Brian Storako. “The guys have put in the work. We have talent, it is just a matter of getting it done.”

“Cody threw strikes like he has been doing all year,” the coach said. “We came out from the get-go with our bats and hit the ball really well and that made it a little easier for him.

“He worked hard in the offseason and I think things have fallen in place. He’s got that confidence that maybe he didn’t have in the past.

He mixes it up and makes them put the ball in play. He doesn’t fall behind.”

That run support was more than enough for Jake Latz, the LSU-recruit who struck out nine in four-2/3 innings to record his first win of the spring in only his third appearance.

“We had Latz on the mound so automatically you have a little more confidence,” Storako said.

“Again, we hit the ball well

which has been our M.O. this season so far.

“Jake threw the ball well. He’s getting acclimated a little bit so there is still room for improvement. The more he pitches, the better conditioned he will get. He will be fine.”

The two wins pushed Lemont’s record in the South Suburban Blue conference to 6-0.

“It is always nice to start off hot and not the other way around,” Storako said. “We are playing with some confidence and are hoping to continue to build on that.”

Lemont soccer scores big-time results

By SCOTT SCHMID sschmid@shawmedia.com LEMONT — For a Lemont soccer program that has captured eight consecutive conference titles, the Indians’ biggest tests often come from outside the league.

On April 11, one of those opportunities presented itself and the squad passed the challenge with flying colors, playing Downers Grove South to a 1-1 draw. Alex Mihailovic scored Lemont’s goal off a corner kick from Kim Jerantowski.

“We played our best game of the season,” said Lemont coach Rick Prangen. “We played really well and that was a big test for us. We started six underclassmen and used a little different formation but they responded well. The work rate was very good and the goal was wellearned.”

Returning to South Suburban Conference action on Tuesday, the Indians breezed to an 8-0 victory over Evergreen Park. Mihailovic netted a hat trick and Nicole McKevitt scored a pair of goals, including one on a penalty kick.

Kelly Fritz notched her seventh shutout in goal.

“The nice thing was we had talked about when you are playing a team that has never beaten you,” the coach said, “you want to set a tone right away. And we did that in the first 20 min-

utes. That showed maturity on their part.”

Mihailovic is the team’s leading scorer through nine games (6-1-2 record) while midfielder Kim Jerantowski is playing at another level.

“For Alex, being a sophomore vs. being a freshman is a difference,” Prangen said.

“In the box, she is a good goal scorer. She is doing what we expected her to do. She is a big part of the team.

“And Kim is a special player. I haven’t seen a better player than her this year; she is one of the better players in the area. Very few players can put a team on their back and she is that good. Her will to win is great to see. In 21 years doing this, I’ve come across special players and she is one of them for us.”

After improving to 10-2 on the spring with a victory over Hillcrest April 9, the Indians saw scheduled games against Tinley Park and Lincoln-Way North canceled due to the weather.

“It would be nice to get out and play,” said Lemont coach Chris Traina, who gave her team a few days off which corresponded with Lemont’s prom last weekend.

Through 12 games, Rylie Jay is leading the team with a .610 batting average. Jay has knocked out nine doubles and five home runs and has driven in 26 runs.

Lauren May is batting .500 with six doubles, one triple and 16 RBIs. Also hitting over .400 are Brianna D’Amato, Karian Folliard, Maddy Vermejan, Carly Jaworski and Anna Smagacz.

Five different Indians have gotten work inside the pitching circle. Jaworski is 3-2 with a 2.40 ERA in 35 innings while Lauren Young is 3-0 with a 3.43 ERA. Emily Durham is 2-0 and Jessica Spinelli and Smagacz have one win apiece.

Depending on the weather, Lemont is expected to play a make-up game with Tinley Park on Friday, followed by a matchup against Plainfield South on Saturday, however, a make-up conference game could replace that doubleheader.

Last year, in an effort to obtain lower electric rates for residents and small businesses, the Village went through the electric aggregation process of choosing an electric supplier. FirstEnergy Solutions was the supplier the Village chose. This was an opt-out option in which residents received a notice in the mail informing them of the chosen supplier, and if you did not want to participate, you simply returned the form.

If you did not initially take advantage of this opportunity, you still have the ability to participate in the program with FirstEnergy Solutions. FirstEnergy Solutions’ ixed rate is 4.83¢ per kilowatt hour with an enrollment period through October 2014. There are no fees to enroll in the program. If you would like to switch to FirstEnergy Solutions, simply call them at 866-636-3749 and inform them that you want to be included in the program with the Village of Lemont. This pertains only to residents within the Village; unincorporated areas are not able to participate. If you are currently with another supplier other than ComEd, you should check if they impose any cancellation fee prior to switching your supplier.
