nweskerna@shawmedia.com ST. CHARLES – The streets of downtown St. Charles were flooded with green Saturday afternoon as hundreds of people gathered to watch the annual St. Patrick’s Parade and celebrate Irish heritage.

About 75 entrants passed crowds along Main Street from Sixth Street to Fourth Avenue in the hourlong parade.

Many who were gathered prepared to sit in 30-degree temperatures by bringing along blankets, and some brought umbrellas or raincoats, just in case.

Aside from the occasional flurry of snow, the precipitation held off.

Nick and Stephanie Stravropoulos of St. Charles and their two daughters, Tessa, 5, and Lily, 9, braved the cold to carry on the 10-year family tradition of watching the St. Patrick’s Parade.

“We look forward to it every year,” said Stephanie Stravropoulos, adding that the St. Charles North marching band was her favorite parade entry.

Nick Stravropoulos said their relatives from out of town usually join them for the parade, but didn’t make it this year. He said St. Patrick’s Day is for celebrating the “little Irish” that runs in their family.

Parade entries included youth organizations such as the Girl Scouts and Boy Scouts, along with businesses, churches, political candidates, sports teams, high school bands and pets.

Several bagpipe bands marched in the parade, drawing cheers and applause from crowds.

Beverly resident Bernadette Glavin-O’Pater said the bagpipers were her favorite part. Dan Glavin-O’Pater and their son, Danny, 6, watched the parade, too, and all three wore green to celebrate their Irish heritage.

Bernadette Glavin-O’Pater wore a pair of oversized sunglasses shaped like shamrocks along with a green feather boa, and Danny wore several green-beaded necklaces.

“We’re Irish, and it’s fun,” she said.

Bernadette Glavin-O’Pater said her family attends the parade each year in St. Charles, along with several other St. Patrick’s Day parades in the Chicago area.

She summed up Saturday’s parade in one word – “excellent.”

Salt use goes up as snow piles up

By JONATHAN BILYK jbilyk@shawmedia.com A little more than a month ago, Dan Dinges, like other public works professionals in local road departments, was wondering what he was going to do with the surplus of salt sitting in Geneva’s public works facility.

But after almost six weeks of snow and ice, Dinges, the city of Geneva’s public works director, said that potential problem has taken care of itself.

“Surprisingly, we’re pretty much on track to having a normal winter now,” Dinges said.

“Even if almost all of it has come in the last month or so.”

Through January, Kane County and the rest of northern Illinois had experienced one of the least snowy winters in recorded history.

In those two months, the

Tri-Cities area had recorded only about 2 inches of snow, 10 percent to 15 percent of normal snowfall.

But from mid-February to mid-March, sustained winter temperatures have produced a surprising amount of snow, said Gilbert Sebenste, meteorologist at Northern Illinois University in DeKalb.

Sebenste noted that the region has received a little more than 30 inches of snow for the winter, just slightly less than the normal seasonal total of 35 inches.

“We caught up in March, and fast,” Sebenste said. “When you consider how little we had received going into February, that’s really incredible.”

Bill Edwards, maintenance director at the Kane County Division of Transportation, said his crews normally respond to about 45 snow and ice events in a typical winter.

This winter, he said, they’ve responded to 35 events. And about three-quarters of those events have come since the beginning of February.

Edwards also noted that the county has, to date, used about 9,800 tons of salt to de-ice roads, compared to about 12,000 tons in an average winter.

Dinges noted that neither he nor other road superintendents ever believed the region would escape a winter without at least a few heavy snowfalls.

“We knew it wouldn’t last,” Dinges said. “But now it can stop snowing, anytime.”

Geneva looks District 303 school board at budget plan hears virtual school pitch ST. CHARLES

By BRENDA SCHORY bschory@shawmedia.com GENEVA – The city has been lean for five years now – tightening belts, reducing spending – and its 2013-14 budget proposal reflects that commitment to financial stability, City Administrator Mary McKittrick said Monday in her budget presentation to the City Council.

At a proposed $16.3 million, the city’s general fund, which pays for day-to-day services, is $2 million less than it was five years ago, McKittrick said. It has an ending balance of $4.2 million, which is just over the requirement of having enough money to cover 93 days of expenses.

“This year, my focus is fiscal stability,” McKittrick said. “You will recall over the last five years in presenting each of these budgets to you, I have spoken about managing the challenges, wants versus needs, good governance and living within our means.”

McKittrick said they have reduced spending where possible but continued to provide “high-quality customer service as well as strengthening communications and enhancing transparency with all stakeholders of the community.”

Most of the expenditure reductions in the past five years were from deferred capital improvements, reducing or freezing staffing levels and decreasing operational expenditures.

The city’s current staffing levels are less than in 2004, she said. Currently, there are 142 employees; in 2004, there were 157, she said.

McKittrick’s presentation will be posted on the city’s website, www.geneva.il.us, but she noted the same information is posted through its council packet as well.

She invited questions that would be answered at next Monday’s Committee of the whole. If the committee approves, a public hearing would be scheduled for April 15.

By ASHLEY RHODEBECK arhodebeck@shawmedia.com ST. CHARLES – The St. Charles School District 303 special board meeting Monday night attracted a full house as members listened to and questioned a virtual school’s pitch.

District 303 is one of 18 districts in the Fox Valley invited to join the Illinois Virtual Charter School @ Fox River Valley, which Virtual Learning Solutions seeks to open in the fall. The company contracts with K12 Inc., a for-profit company, to provide the online instruction.

By law, the board has 30 days from Monday to make a decision. If any of the 18 school districts denies the request, Virtual Learning Solutions will appeal to the State Charter School Commission, the district’s legal counsel said.

K12 representative Randall Greenway, the board’s contact for the charter application, spent about 45 minutes presenting the plan, touching on topics such as accountability, teacher licensure, student programs and the types of students that could benefit from a virtual school.

Initially, he said, few students will likely enroll fulltime.

“It’s not for all students,” Greenway said. “One in 500 students will be interested.”

Board member Kathy Hewell expressed concerns about the education students would receive, especially compared to the services the district’s schools provide.

“That would concern me that a virtual school would not offer many things we provide,” she said.

In his presentation, Greenway said the curriculum offers more than 185 courses

and more than 21,000 individual lessons. To Hewell, he said a virtual school could be a better fit for students with severe food allergies and those who are bullied.

“This is not an easy program,” Greenway said. “Our curriculum is rigorous.”

For Superintendent Don Schlomann, the question wasn’t about the merits of virtual schools. For him, the issue was about K12, who he said is struggling to keep clients in Wisconsin.

“The question for me is whether K12, quite frankly, is the venue to deliver that,” Schlomann said.

District administration was expected to make its own presentation regarding the proposal, but board members were still asking Greenway questions at press time. An opportunity for public comment was also planned.

Police departments use grant funding to crack down on impaired drivers

“Ultimately, Illinois Department of Transportation’s primary goal is to save lives with any program we do,” IDOT spokesperson Paris Ervin said in an email.

According to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration, there were 278 alcohol-impaired driving fatalities in Illinois in 2011, down from 439 in 2007. Kane County had nine such fatalities in 2007, 17 in 2009 and six in 2011, according to the agency.

Locally, police departments can also apply for funding from the Kane County DUI Task Force. Last month, for example, the Sugar Grove Police Department received $8,200 for DUI enforcement to

be used throughout the year.

Dan Hoffman, Campton Hills police chief and task force chair, said the money is generated from traffic citation fines and is earmarked by the Kane County Circuit Clerk’s Office.

“It really benefits small departments like ours, but it benefits all departments, large and small,” Hoffman said.

His department receives grants from IDOT, which enables his officers to proactively enforce speed limits and seat belt use and watch for impaired drivers, he said.

The special enforcement has shown to be effective, Hoffman said. With the exception of last year, he said, accident rates have decreased, and officers tell him they are seeing more taxis at night.

“DUIs are less prevalent than they used to be in Campton Hills because of the in-

creased enforcement and the public’s awareness that we’re out there,” Hoffman said.

St. Charles police base their patrols during traffic campaigns around the times of day and days that have higher incidents of DUIs, McCurtain said.

Data from the St. Patrick’s Day weekend enforcement was not available Monday, but McCurtain said city police last year made 24 DUI arrests and issued 91 citations for seat belt violations and 87 for speeding through special traffic enforcement campaigns.

In comparison, the campaigns resulted in 35 DUI arrests in 2010 and 34 DUI arrests in 2011, according to the department’s annual report for those years.

s with many major holidays, the St. Charles Police Department ramped up efforts during the St. Patrick’s Day weekend to crack down on drunken drivers and seat belt violations.

The extra traffic enforcement – which also is usually conducted in St. Charles for Memorial Day, Independence Day, Labor Day, Thanksgiving, Christmas and New Year’s – was made possible through grant funding from the Illinois Department of Transportation.

Police spokesperson Paul McCurtain said the department has participated in the grant-funded patrols for the past several years.

“They wanted to make the streets in our city safer by reducing the number of accidents and actually protecting the people inside the vehicles while they’re driving,” McCurtain said.

Officers mainly target areas with higher concentrations of violations, McCurtain said, noting officers volunteer to work the extra shifts. The state reimburses the police department for the officers’ time and mileage, he said.

The St. Charles Police Department is part of a statewide effort to combat impaired driving. According to IDOT’s Division of Traffic Safety, grants in fiscal 2011 funded about $9.6 million in patrol hours that resulted in 166,318 citations during holiday campaigns statewide. Of the

The state has also noted progress with its Sustained Traffic Enforcement Program, which St. Charles and Campton Hills has participated in.

Ervin said STEP is Illinois’ version of high visibility enforcement, a universal traffic safety approach designed to create deterrence and change unlawful traffic behaviors.

The goals of STEP include reducing the number of severe injury and fatal traffic accidents, increasing seat belt use and reducing incidents of injuries and fatalities caused by impaired driving “2012 marked the fourth consecutive year that the state of Illinois experienced under 1,000 fatalities on Illinois’ roads,” Ervin said.

Almost 200 agencies applied for STEP funding for fiscal 2014, Ervin said. She said IDOT tries to fund as many police departments as feasible.

“But,” she wrote in an email, “the department no longer has discretionary funding that was awarded to Illinois as a result of Illinois General Assembly passing the Primary Seat Belt law. The state of Illinois received a lump sum total of $29,727,619 to be used for a variety of safety measures including the Sustained Traffic Enforcement Program (STEP) grant. The lack of these additional funds has made this program – as well as all traffic safety programs – more competitive as federal funds are not as substantial.”

Aldermen OK changes to facade grant program

By AL LAGATTOLLA alagattolla@shawmedia.com ELBURN – Trustee Bill Grabarek smiled and paused for a second Monday night before signifying that, at last, he was ready to cast his vote to support the Elburn Station annexation agreement.

Board members voted unanimously to approve the plan, which clears the way for the ShoDeen development that is slated to bring 2,215 new homes to the village over 20 years. It also removes an obstacle to the extension of Anderson Road, a project that would create a bridge that would provide a crossing of the train tracks that divide the village. Kane County officials had been concerned that $21.7 million in federal, state and local funding could be lost if the debate over Elburn Station were to continue through the summer.

County Board member Drew Frasz said if all goes well, construction could begin

by September. Tom Rickert, the deputy director at the Kane County Division of Transportation, said the bridge could be

completed by the end of 2014.

Grabarek’s vote was key.

Throughout the months leading up to a vote, Grabarek had brought up point after point, seeking to clarify every detail.

He did so again on Monday, and board members brought up nine items to amend before agreeing to the vote. In October 2012, it was Grabarek who introduced a motion to table discussion on the plans.

Frasz said Grabarek deserves credit for playing such a key role in the process. When the vote was complete, Frasz applauded.

“This will be Bill Grabarek’s legacy, that this is done right,” Frasz said.

The plan has seen some changes over the last few months. For instance, the number of multifamily units is restricted to 600, and of that total, 200 must be designated as senior housing. Also, the village worked to split the cost of a planned pedestrian bridge.

The changes brought up Monday were characterized as minor by village attorney Bob Britz, who said he expected ShoDeen would approve the changes.

Local school board holding hearing on virtual campus

By KANE COUNTY CHRONICLE editorial@kcchronicle.com BATAVIA – The Batavia School Board at 6 p.m. today will hold a public hearing on a proposal from an Illinois notfor-profit corporation called Virtual Learning Solutions Inc. to establish an online, virtual charter school serving grades K-12.

Virtual Learning Solutions is seeking to create the Illinois Virtual Charter School at Fox River Valley, which would start operation this fall. The company contracts with K12 Inc., a for-profit company, to provide the online instruction.

The hearing is part of the Batavia School Board’s regular meeting, which will be

held at the Rosalie Jones Administration Center, 335 W. Wilson St., Batavia.

The Batavia School Board must vote to accept or reject the proposal within 30 days after the hearing. Once the Batavia School Board has voted, the board must submit a report to the Illinois State Board of Education.

If the board votes to approve the proposal, ISBE will undertake a final review and determine whether to approve the charter school. If the board votes to deny the proposed charter school, the report must be submitted to ISBE and the State Charter School Commission, along with an explanation of the reasons the application was denied.

The process also has included comments by residents – both in support and in opposition to the plan. But no residents spoke on Monday night.

After the vote, Grabarek said he was “glad we got this moved.” He said he didn’t think the vote would be accomplished on Monday night.

Village President Dave Anderson then made a statement thanking “a number of people involved in this project,” including board members, village officials “and most importantly, the residents of this village.”

Also on Monday, the board approved lifting its ban on video gambling, by a 5-1 vote.

Trustee Ken Anderson was opposed to the measure. Before the vote, he asked board members to ask themselves whether it made Elburn a better place. Grabarek acknowledged he previously supported the ban on video gambling, but he said there are more controls in place now than there had been before. In a nod to Ken Anderson, Grabarek suggested that the village could revisit the decision down the road, or ask residents in a referendum.

“There will be a lot tougher screening for applicants,” 7th Ward Alderman Dave Brown said.

As part of the changes to the facade grant program, the property owner must be a co-applicant with any business requesting assistance.

The changes also include a “claw-back” provision where if the owner sells the building within a specified period, a portion of the grant would be refunded to the city. The city is proposing a three-year period, with 100 percent refunded within the first year, 66 percent within the second year, and 33 percent within the third year.

City staff from now on will do an economic development assessment of the project’s impact or value for the

City Council’s consideration prior to approval. A financial analysis of the tenant will also be done, including looking at financial statements and tax returns, and doing credit and background checks.

Tuck pointing will now be an allowed improvement for grant eligibility, however, under a one-time only provision.

The changes to the downtown improvement grant program include that the property owner must be co-applicant with any business requesting assistance.

The “claw-back” provision also would apply to the program.

A financial analysis also would be done as part of the changes to the program.

In addition, the new rules would restrict the allowable improvements for grant eligibility to accessibility improvements and permanent, code-related construction and remodeling (i.e. electric, plumbing, etc.).

GENEVA – Paul M. Cook, 84, actor, author and composer of Geneva, passed away Saturday, March 16, 2013, at Pine Acres Rehabilitation Center in DeKalb after a long battle with Parkinson’s disease.

He was born May 20, 1928, in San Antonio, Texas, the son of Henry Barnard and Letha (Frame) Cook.

As an actor in TV commercials, industrial films and movies for 45 years, Paul was with the Shirley Hamilton Agency in Chicago.

His movie credits included “Damien-Omen II,” “The Untouchables” and Dr. Hull in “Somewhere in Time.” Paul served many years as a Dale Carnegie instructor, was a regional vice president of Screen Actors Guild in Detroit and president of TV Actors Studio in Chicago.

In his retirement, Paul composed two CDs of romantic instrumentals and soft jazz orchestrated by Kent Wehman. Some of his previous work had been recorded by Les Paul and Mary Ford and the Gene Shaw Jazz Quintet.

Paul was a member of the St. Charles Writers Group for many years.

During that time, he published a novel, “A Change in Plans,” and a book of short stories.

He is survived by his wife, Susan Knutsen-Cook; four children, Thomas (Nina) of St. Croix, Virgin Islands, Grady of Florida, John (Karen) of Wheeling, W.V., and Lisa (Phil) Derbyshire of Livonia, Mich.; and his stepdaughter, Kim (Ken) Overstreet of St. Charles.

Paul is also survived by his seven grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by his parents and sister, Dorthalee Cook.

Memorial visitation will be held from 4 to 7 p.m. Saturday, March 23, at Malone Funeral Home, 324 E. State St. in Geneva, with a celebration of life service at 6 p.m.

She was born Oct. 11, 1930, in the Township of Grant, Portage County, Wis., the daughter of Leslie and Ethel (Hill) Kramer. She married Charles W. Drmolka on Aug. 26, 1949, in Almond, Wis. Mildred had a number of interests, including arts and crafts, baking, fishing and playing cards. She was also an excellent cook and hostess.

She especially cherished her grandchildren.

BATAVIA – Marilyn J. Fedtke, 77, of Batavia, formerly of St. Charles and Sycamore, passed away peacefully surrounded by her family on March 8, 2013, at Delnor Hospital. Marilyn was born Oct. 1, 1935, in Batavia, the daughter of Harold and Margaret (nee Chamberlain) Holm.

Marilyn graduated from Batavia High School in 1953. After graduation, she became a beautician before marrying Kenneth Fedtke on March 9, 1957, and having her family. Marilyn and Ken lived on farms in St. Charles and Sycamore before moving to Heritage Woods of Batavia in March of 2004, where Marilyn thoroughly enjoyed life with her friends.

Marilyn was a 4-H leader and worked actively with the Kane County Women’s Farm Bureau. She avidly engaged in knitting and crocheting, and loved to sew and bake for her family.

She is survived by her three children, Sally (Jim) Senechalle of St. Charles, Scott Fedtke of Sycamore and Sandra (Bob) Mason of Hanover Park; her grandchildren, Jillian and Kevin Senechalle; and her sister-in-law, Dee Holm of Batavia.

In addition to her parents, Marilyn is preceded in death by her husband, Ken; brother, Bill Holm; and sister, Barbara Holm.

Lorraine was a homemaker for many years before going to work as a nurse’s aide at Geneva Community Hospital. She was a loving mother and devoted wife. Lorraine was a very creative and artistic person. She expressed her creativity through knitting, pastel drawing and sewing. She was a very generous and kind-hearted person to everyone she came across.

She is survived by her two daughters, Holly (Patrick) Murtaugh of Elk Grove Village and Blythe (David) McDuffee of St. Charles; grandchildren, Matt (Meral Aydin) McDuffee of Thousand Oaks, Calif., Kelly (Carl) Boor of Elgin, Brad (Caitlin) Hazelton of Aurora, Brianna (Kyle) Anderson of Maple Grove, Minn., and Mackenzie Hazelton of Plymouth, Minn.; great-grandchildren, Isabella Boor, Jacob Hazelton and Kadie Jo Hubbard; a brother, Daniel Fountaine of Elmwood Park; and a daughter-in-law, Cynthia Hazelton of Maple Grove.

Kane County Assistant State’s Attorney Bianca Camargo argued against a new trial, saying that Lolis, a restaurant owner for 25 years, knew to read papers before he signed them.

“You would never sign anything without reading it,” Camargo said. “And this was dealing with your liberty.”

Casement argued the Constitution allows Lolis to have a jury trial and it can only be waived knowingly in open court.

Casement said Lolis’ case will start over April 29 at branch court, where it is expected to be transferred to the judicial center.

BATAVIA – Members of the Batavia Environmental Commission want people to unplug their computers and electrical appliances Saturday night.

The commission, in conjunction with the Batavia Park District, is participating in Earth Hour 2013. The free event will take place from 7 p.m. to 9:30 p.m. Saturday at the Batavia Park District’s Eastside Community Center, 14 N. Van Buren St. Earth Hour is billed as the world’s largest single campaign for the planet. Batavia Environmental Commission member Dianne Peterson, who is organizing the event in Batavia, said she hopes it teaches people to be more environmentally aware.

“What we do in our personal choices really makes a difference,” Peterson said. “The choices we think are really

small impact the world. I want to inspire people to make a difference.”

This is the fifth year Batavia has participated in the event. During Saturday’s event, people can participate in several activities, including candlelight yoga, a drum circle and star watching.

Members of the Fox Valley Astronomical Society will bring their telescopes to the event.

Other activities include reiki, guided mediation, and games for children. Several new activities are on tap, including the world premiere of the shadow puppet play “The History of Light,” by the Sea Beast Puppet Company, bilingual storytelling, photo light painting, and reflexology.

After the event, participants can go to the Batavia Creamery at 4 N. Island Ave., for discounted prices on ice cream. Information about the event is available by going to Batavia Environmental Commission’s Facebook page.

GENEVA – Police are investigating the apparent burglary of a gas station near Geneva’s Metra station.

Geneva police said someone apparently smashed a glass window at the Citgo gas station and convenience store in the 600 block of South First Street (Route 31).

Police said the incident is believed to have occurred before 5 a.m. Friday. Police said a cash register was taken from the store. Geneva Police Cmdr. Julie Nash said Monday that approximately $150 had been stolen.

The burglary was discovered by store employees, who called police to the scene shortly before 6 a.m. Friday. The station was open for business throughout the weekend.

GENEVA – A former restaurant owner convicted last year of squeezing a waitress’s breast against her will has won a new trial after a judge ruled Monday that he had not been properly apprised of his right to a jury trial.

“Waiver of a jury trial should not be left to presumption,” Kane County Judge Katherine Moran said after a more than two-hour hearing.

Moran had convicted Dimitrios V. Lolis, 54, of St. Charles – who had owned the now-closed The Copper Fox Cafe in St. Charles – in a bench trial last year on a misdemeanor charge of battery.

The charge stemmed from an Aug. 20, 2011, complaint alleged by Katy Green, 24, of Geneva, then a waitress at the Copper Fox. Lolis’ previous attorney,

Glenn Sowa, sought a new trial, asserting in court papers it was Moran’s responsibility to admonish Lolis in open court of his right to a jury trial, even though he had signed a waiver of a jury trial and was accepting a bench trial.

The trial was held at the Kane County Branch Court on Randall Road, where there is no court reporter, and hence no record of what is said in open court. The only records are what is filed on paper. Monday’s hearing was held at the courthouse in Geneva. Jury trials are not held at branch court.

Embracing tax reform that won’t happen

By ALBERT R. HUNT Bloomberg News Everyone in Washington celebrates tax reform. President Obama embraced it in his State of the Union address. House Speaker John Boehner, R, called it a top legislative priority. The House Ways and Means and Senate Finance committees are convening bipartisan working groups, and lobbyists are licking their chops.

To the president and Democrats, tax reform is an opportunity to create a more equitable tax code while bringing in more revenue to reduce the deficit; to Republicans, it’s about cutting marginal rates, especially the top ones, to promote economic growth; to lobbyists, it’s about padding their wallets.

It’s a mirage, say a number of serious participants who would like to see something achieved. The chances of any substantial overhaul in this Congress are slim to none.

The U.S. tax code is riddled with special-interest provisions, economic inefficiencies and inequities.

Yet every preference enjoys either popular support or influential backing from a vested interest.

This always makes the politics of tax reform daunting; in reshaping a code that hands out more than $1 trillion a year in preferences, there would be winners and losers. Inevitably, it’s the potential losers who bring the most passion to the deliberations.

What makes an over-

haul next to impossible today is the added burden of total polarization: Democrats insist that any changes must result in net revenue gains; Republicans say any measure must be revenue neutral. Both sides agree that changing the way taxes are allocated is politically perilous and only can be done with bipartisan support.

That rules out any sweeping change, despite the genuine support of both the president and House Ways and Means Committee Chairman Dave Camp, R-Mich.

It’s conceivable, if unlikely, that a deal could be struck to replace the current across-the-board spending reductions under sequestration with some additional revenue along with cuts to entitlements.

That could open the way for a modest tax overhaul that slightly lowers rates and cuts a few preferences.

The goal of strong reform advocates, to cut the top rate by as much as a third and slash loopholes, runs into current realities.

Still, a major discussion of tax reform this year would be healthy. It could be educational, underscoring the deficiencies and unfairness of the code and the tough trade-offs required to make it better.

That could lead to gradual changes and improvements at the margins.

It also probably would be a boon for the Washington economy, as special interests rush to hire any lobbyist with a pulse to protect their benefits.

Mr. Tom Minnerick of Elgin points out in a newspaper Feb. 24 that the government is in crisis because of the Republicans. He is forgetting that the Democratic Party has outspent many previous administrations that have been in charge prior

to this administration. A lot of good politicians are not paying attention. We elect our people to hep us, not create a crisis.

It seems to me all politicians on both sides of the aisle are out of touch and need to be replaced.

ark Johnson drew rave reviews for his handling of a young, up-and-coming group of Cubs prospects while managing the club’s Short-A affiliate at Boise (Idaho) last summer.

He expects to see many of the same players he guided to the Northwest League championship series in 2012 in his first season with the Cougars, which opens at Fifth Third Bank Ballpark on April 4.

Johnson knows there’s an advantage to familiarity, especially with many players among the group beginning their first full professional seasons. That’s why he doesn’t plan to deviate from a simple approach. The schedule is expanded and the proximity to Chicago brings a built-in challenge, but that won’t affect what Johnson stresses before each game.

Johnson managed in a far different atmosphere in Boise the past two seasons. While Cubs allegiance stretches throughout North America, fans didn’t quite flock to Idaho to see the organization’s future as they are expected to in Geneva.

The Hawks’ average attendance of 2,399 fans in 38 openings ranked sixth in the eight-team Northwest League, more than 2,000 spectators behind the league-leading Spokane (Wash.) Indians.

There were rudimentary on-field mistakes and an overall unprofessionalism in the clubhouse, among other things.

That is, until Johnson had the chance to explain his fundamentals-first philosophy after the first few games.

“They weren’t performing early on and something clicked, and it was a totally different team to watch the last month than it was the first month. Completely different team,” Hyde said.

“And the staff just did an amazing job of staying with it, staying with the process,

staying with the development. But also, the confidence kind of fed with that group, and it was an extremely exciting team to watch the last month.”

McLeod soon agreed, balancing Hyde’s report with his own observations from a late-season visit.

Whether it was their clubhouse comportment or more serious approaches to early work and batting practice, McLeod noticed the Hawks “got professionalized” because of Johnson’s ability to juggle the many roles of a lower-level minor league manager.

“As a manager, Mark Johnson is very competitive, right?” McLeod said. “So then you’ve got that own

competitiveness versus, ‘OK, we have to develop these players.’ ” A major league catcher for parts of eight seasons – including 1998-2002 with the White Sox – Johnson briefly played alongside Cougars pitching coach Ron Villone with the 2008 St. Louis Cardinals.

Hitting coach Tom Beyers, a Cubs organizational coach or coordinator since 2000, advanced as far as Triple-A during a minor league playing career from 1979-1983.

“We’ve got three guys that can really communicate with the players and we understand; we’re players’ coaches,” Johnson said.

“We’re in it for them. We’re totally vested for them. We want to see every one of them get to the big leagues and we’re going to do and say everything we can to help make that happen.”

For Johnson, those messages start with the basics and build from there.

“You’ve just got to let them be aware of what could happen if they’re not prepared and what they need to expect,” Johnson said. “No matter how much you tell them and preach it, it’s something they have to experience for themselves, even if it’s for the second or third time.”

Adelman’s classmate, Hannah Davison, figured to shine in the triple jump, in which she qualified for the 3A state meet as a freshman. However, hip issues aggravated during a recent club soccer tournament – Davison committed to Northwestern but does not play high school soccer – left Davison out of the lineup.

“We’re being cautious with her,” Raak said. “We know what we have with her, and we’re just going to make sure she’s 100 percent before everything starts to go full-steam.”

Raak forecast Davison’s return for outdoor season, which begins the first weekend of April.

Several Chronicle-area athletes still are aiming for success in the Illinois Prep Top Times meet this weekend. The event widely considered the unofficial indoor state meet is held at Illinois Wesleyan’s Shirk Center in Bloomington.

Addressing a brief flirtation with track that concluded with Friday’s Upstate Eight Conference girls indoor track and field meet at Batavia, Rabin offered this between breaths: “Some really great, fast people,” Rabin said, “which helped me, ultimately, in the long run with my softball.”

Rabin trained with the track team during indoor season after joining the sport for the first time.

Her grade school, Da Vinci Academy, did not field a team, and Rabin was curious to see how she’d compete.

On Friday, she finished as runner-up in the 55-meter dash (7.44 seconds) and fourth in the 200 (26.66).

“I just wanted to try it out and see if I liked it,” Rabin said. It was a really great experience this year.”

Rabin, a Northwestern softball recruit, stole 36 bases as a pitcher/outfielder during her sophomore season.

She replied, “Yeah, definitely,” when asked if she’d return to indoor track as a senior.

North Stars track coach John Osmanski wouldn’t mind that proposition, even if it only lasted a few meets.

“She’s one of the top softball players in the state, so what can you do?”

Osmanski said. “We knew going into the season that she was going to do this for a little bit and then switch.

We were just happy to have her.”

Vikings drop season opener

By JAY SCHWAB jschwab@shawmedia.com AURORA – The Geneva girls soccer team was supposed to open its season at Wheaton Academy this week, but the match was scrapped because of shaky field conditions.

That left the Vikings in the unenviable position of starting off against traditional powerhouse Waubonsie Valley. Geneva struck first and played a decent match but dropped its season opener, 2-1, in Saturday afternoon’s Upstate Eight Conference crossover.

“We’ve hardly been outside,” Geneva coach Megan Owens said. “Nobody wants to open up their season with Waubonsie.

It’s a tough opener, and they’ve already had a game.”

Given those circumstances, it was especially encouraging for the Vikings when sophomore defender Megan Kozlow’s bending corner kick made it through traffic and into the net to give the Vikings a 1-0 advantage midway through the first half.

“She’s got a nice, left-footed in-swinging cross,” Owens said of Kozlow. “She did a great job with that.”

The Vikings retained that lead through halftime but Waubonsie’s Kristen Dodson scored

While several key pieces return from last year’s conference champion team, the Vikings have some retooling to do, especially in the midfield.

“I think we gave a solid performance,” Owens said. “I didn’t see any big issues. I think we were very solid in goal. It’s just getting used to playing with new teammates. It’s a hard game. You couldn’t make a lot of adjustments. They put a lot of pressure on you, but I saw a lot of good things.”

The match, played on a chilly afternoon in front of a sparse crowd, was moved to Metea Valley’s turf field.

BY TERRY KOVEL KOVELS.COM Folk art is unique and often is both useful and humorous. At a Cowan’s auction in late 2012, an example of these traits was seen in a mirror offered for sale. The 19th-century mirror’s pine frame was carved to look like a man, with his head at the top, shoe-clad feet at the bottom and hands held up near his neck. One hand holds five fingers up, the other just two. The artist seems to be referring to the seven years of bad luck that awaits anyone who breaks a mirror.

Or perhaps it was a gift for a seventh anniversary or just a suggestion of the lucky number seven. It was good luck for the seller. The mirror, only 17 inches high, was estimated at $1,000 to $1,500. It sold after a bidding battle for $5,700. *** Q: I am thinking about remodeling my home office and am agonizing over replacing my old desk and chair.

I bought the very heavy desk about 20 years ago from an elderly couple. It was made by the Imperial Desk Co. of Evansville, Ind. It has a few nicks, but it’s in very good shape. The chair was made by Domore Chair Co. of Elkhart, Ind. I had it reupholstered about 18 years ago. It has a cast-metal frame and also is heavy. Are the desk and chair valuable antiques I should keep?

And if so, is it OK to use them?

A: Your desk and chair are not valuable antiques. But they are good, solid pieces of office furniture.

Depending on their style and condition, the desk might sell for about $350 and the chair for about $200. Base your decision on how useful the pieces are and if you like their “look.” ***

Q: I recently found what I thought was a very unique item at a yard sale.

It’s a ceramic pig with many tiny holes on its back. It took me all weekend to figure out what it is. I think it’s an hors d’oeuvres server because the holes are just the right size to it hold toothpicks. Is it unique and valuable?

A: Toothpick holders in the shape of animals became popular in the 1950s. Hedgehogs and porcupines probably were the first animal shapes made, since inserted toothpicks look like the animal’s quills. After that, cats, dogs, pigs and other animals were made in pottery, wood, plastic, silver and other metals. They are fun to use at a party, but most aren’t worth more than $20 to $25. Toothpick holders made of silver are worth more. *** Q: We have an 8-inch gold-rimmed plate with a painting of a large hotel on it. At the bottom of the plate is the phrase, “New West Baden Springs Hotel, West Baden, Ind., The Carlsbad of America.” It’s marked on the back, “Hand Painted, the Jonroth Studios, Germany.” We don’t know how old it is, but my mother is 93 years old, and she recalls that her mother bought it on one of the family’s trips to West Baden when she was a little girl. Can you tell us its approximate age and value?

A: The “new” West Baden Springs Hotel was built in 1902, after the original hotel burned down. It was advertised as “The Eighth Wonder of the World” because it’s main circular building is topped by the world’s largest dome. It was called “The Carlsbad of America” because of nearby mineral springs, similar to those in Carlsbad, Germany. Jonroth Studios was a name used by an American importing company, John H. Roth & Co. The company was founded in 1909 and

By ED SYMKUS GateHouse News Service Though she’s starred in a couple of feature films (“Baby Mama,” Date Night”), and had a prominent role in, as well as wrote, “Mean Girls,” Tina Fey is still best known for her TV work: head writer and performer on “Saturday Night Live,” creator-writer-executive producer-star of “30 Rock.”

But with that show now gone, Fey is moving forward with her big-screen career.

The former member of the renowned Chicago improv group Second City will be seen next year in “The Muppets ... Again!” and later this week starring opposite Paul Rudd and Lily Tomlin in the college-set comedy “Admission.” Fey, 42, who plays a Princeton admissions officer, recently spoke about the film in New York.

Ed Symkus: You’ve been so busy with television, how did you get involved in this project?

Tina Fey: I started talking to [director] Paul Weitz about it a few years ago, and actually had met Jean Korelitz, who wrote the book, at a New Year’s Eve party.

She said, “I have this book who someone’s gonna call you about.”

I said, “Really? Happy NEW Year!”

ES: What did you like about the story?

TF: I liked that it was a story about, kind of, adult people. It was a world that

I thought was interesting.

Not just a world of college admissions, but I was interested in people who live their whole life in a college environment, and how insular and weird that can become.

Also, I thought there was a nice warm heart to the story.

ES: You went to the University of Virginia. But didn’t you apply to Princeton?

TF: Yes, and I remember failing at my Princeton interview. My mom wanted me to apply to Princeton since I was a kid. I remember, kind of like the scene in the movie, when Jeremiah (Nat Wolff) goes to the alumni interview and just from the minute you go in, it’s like, nope, this isn’t gonna work. I had a long plaid skirt on, and a suit jacket, and I just wasn’t bringing it. Unlike now,

I felt like I had gone to Sweden or something.

But I got involved in the drama department there, and that’s where I found all the oddly shaped people, and we sort of stuck together.

that I’m probably less likely to change things than other actors only because I know how MAD it makes ME when actors want to change things.

So, I try not to, unless I’m specifically being asked to improvise. The thing about the book and the screenplay – it was all so well done, you didn’t have the impulse of, “Oh, we’ve gotta fix this.”

It was all really thoughtfully written. It’s nice when you can go into something where you really trust that everyone had really thought about it, more than you have, even.

That’s just like a gift.

Electrical firestorm occurs during epileptic seizure Dear Doctor K: I have a friend with epilepsy. Can you explain what happens in her brain?

Dear Reader: Epilepsy is a condition that causes repeated seizures, but sometimes seizures are not caused by epilepsy. It’s not uncommon, for example, for very young children to have seizures when they get a high fever. Called febrile seizures, they usually occur once or a few times and go away forever.

Seizures are caused by sudden, brief changes in the brain’s electrical activity. Our brains have hundreds of billions of cells. The ones that do the work – the ones that help us to think, remember, see, hear, smell, feel and cause us to move – talk to each other through electrical and chemical signals.

What happens in the brain when someone has a seizure is an electrical firestorm. Brain cells fire uncontrollably at up to four times their normal rate.

There are two main types of seizures. A generalized seizure involves the entire brain. A partial seizure affects only part of the brain – but it can turn into a generalized seizure.

The brain’s electrical activity can be seen on an electroencephalogram (EEG).

Seizures temporarily affect the way a person behaves, moves, thinks or feels. The kind of seizure that you see most often – on TV or in movies – is a generalized, grand mal seizure. It’s very dramatic: A person loses consciousness, falls to the ground and temporarily stops breathing.

All body muscles tense up at once for a few seconds; the head and shoulders bend backward.

Then, just as suddenly, the arms and legs start jerking and sometimes the face starts twitching. After a few minutes, the person wakes up. However, he or she can be confused and “out of it” for several hours

thereafter.

But seizures can be more subtle. A person may just stare blankly and blink their eyes.

Nothing is getting through; you can’t reach them. Or a person may suddenly begin to do strange things, such as emptying the contents of a dresser drawer onto the floor. Or a person may suddenly have uncontrollable jerking of one side of the face, an arm or a leg, along with a brief loss of awareness of the world. After a seizure, a person has no memory of the episode.

For most people, seizures can be controlled with medication. If you are with your friend when she has a seizure, call the doctor.

A seizure that lasts more than 20 minutes is a medical emergency.

What causes seizures in the first place? We know, for example, that brain scars, tumors or infections can cause seizures.

But how they cause the electrical firestorm remains uncertain.

Dr. Wallace: I enjoy smoking marijuana, but I don’t drink any alcohol. I’m unhappy to say that alcohol is a legal drug that can be purchased and taxed almost anywhere if the buyer is at least 21 years old.

But marijuana is also considered a drug but is declared to be illegal. I honestly believe that in the next year or two, it will be legal to purchase marijuana.

This action will solve two major problems.

First, the taxes gathered on marijuana sales will help lower the national debt.

And second, legal sales of marijuana will put a serious dent in the now criminal activity of growing and selling marijuana. I also believe that marijuana use is less harmful to your body than alcohol. Is this true? What chemical causes the marijuana user to get high? – Nameless, Tupelo, Miss.

Dear Nameless: In his booklet, “Marijuana: Time for a Closer Look,” Curtis Janeczek, who was a senior medical student at Ohio State University, provided an update on the scientific research on the use of marijuana. He included information about Tetrahydrocannabinol or “THC” for short, which is the chemical that causes a marijuana user to get high.

Alcohol and pot have little in common.

Alcohol leaves the body within six hours after drinking. When smoking pot, THC is stored in cells and experiments show that it takes the body from two weeks to a month to get rid of the chemical.

Marijuana is poison to cells. Dozens of experiments have proved that pot messes up cell growth and cell division in humans and this in-

I’m always amazed by the high volume of people who require a drug or drugs to get “high.” Those who get “high” the “old-fashioned way,” without the use of drugs, share an abundance of wonderful adjectives including loving, caring, helping, teaching, honoring, serving, etc. I think you get the message.

Dr. Wallace: I loaned my ex-boyfriend $150 to help him buy a car. He said he would pay me back $50 a month for four months. The last $50 would have been interest on the loan. At the time I loaned him the money, I thought we were deeply in love.

Now we are no longer an item. We split up a month ago, but Pedro still promised to pay me – eventually.

Well, I’m convinced that “eventually” might never come. How do I sue him to get my money? I really need it. – Rosa, Laredo, Tex. Dear Rosa: Sorry, but unless you have a promissory note from him stating that he will repay the loan of $150 plus $50 interest, your chances of forcing him to repay you are nil.

Continue to ask for the return of your money if you are in contact with him, and be happy if he repays even a part of what he owes you.

Dear Abby: I’m in my early 20s, happily married and financially secure. My husband and I have been discussing having children. My problem is my sister has been trying to start a family for three years, to no avail because she has infertility issues.
