STC schools revive Summit 303 Sessions to focus on community mental health in relation to safety

By ASHLEY RHODEBECK arhodebeck@shawmedia.com ST. CHARLES – St. Charles School District 303 soon will shine a spotlight on community mental health as it relates to school security.

With the nationwide debate about school safety and the focus on mental health, Superintendent Don Schlomann said, “We felt strongly – at least I did – to open up discussion in the community about mental health.”

The school district will reconvene Summit 303 to address the topic. Four sessions are scheduled through May, with the first set for 7 to 9 p.m.

According to District 303, she is expected to give an overview of how mental health is a component of a community’s security and how mental health support is a responsibility of

families, schools and the community.

The school district also is implementing about $353,700 in security procedures to address the physical part of keeping its schools safe. The Business Services Committee reviewed the proposal last week, and Schlomann said the item is moving to the full school board.

One of the recommendations – a panic button similar to those used in banks – came from a teacher, he said.

Other proposed security measures are additional security cameras; intruder function locks, which would allow classroom doors to be locked from the inside; and voice over internet protocol/intercom integration, which would enable authorized individuals to initiate an “all call” intercom from any telephonic instrument for emergency purposes.

Storm cancels classes, gives students the opportunity for outdoor fun

By ERIC SCHELKOPF eschelkopf@shawmedia.com ST. CHARLES – St. Charles East High School sophomore Robert Wolak enjoyed every bit of his day off from school Tuesday.

The snowstorm that caused schools across the region to cancel classes did not deter Wolak and his friends from having outdoor fun at Langum Park in St. Charles.

“I think it is really what the population of St. Charles needed – a day off from the daily grind,” Wolak said.

As of 6 p.m. Tuesday, between eight and nine inches of snow had fallen in the TriCities area, and more was expected throughout the night.

Police departments reported slippery conditions and numerous crashes throughout the day – among them a rollover crash near Batavia, from which one person needed to be extricated.

“The Public Works Department, along with Kane County,

have done a great job keeping the roadways plowed and salted,” Passarelli said.

Lt. Pat Gengler of the Kane County Sheriff’s Office reported that people seemed to heed the warnings to stay home during the day. As of 6 p.m., he reported that the afternoon commute had been better than expected, “but the traffic volume is not the same as a typical day.”

The storm caused schools in the area to close, and some businesses and libraries altered their hours because of the snow. That sent students looking for outdoor activities.

Wolak said the heavy, wet snow was perfect for making snowballs.

“They’re easy to make and easy to throw,” he said as he launched a snowball toward fellow St. Charles East student Christian Memije.

Memije said the wet snow also provided ideal conditions for snowboarding.

“It’s not that powdery,” he said. “It’s actually really good.”

Kiva drops plans for Glenwood site

By ASHLEY RHODEBECK arhodebeck@shawmedia.com CAMPTON HILLS – Plans to turn the former Glenwood School site into an alcohol and substance abuse treatment facility have been dropped.

Patrick Griffin, a lawyer representing Kiva Real Estate Investments, released a statement Tuesday sharing the group’s decision.

“Kiva Real Estate Investments LLC has eliminated the former Glenwood School site in unincorporated Kane County from the properties under consideration for establishing its residential alcohol and substance abuse treatment facility,” according to the statement.

“Kiva remains committed to its treatment mission and looks forward to identifying a residential treatment site in the near future.”

Griffin said he is not aware of Kiva considering other properties in Kane County.

After a series of public meetings, the Campton Hills Village Board denied the annexation request, 4-2.

Kiva representatives had indicated it would redirect its request to Kane County, which has zoning jurisdiction over the facility that is in unincorporated Campton Township.

Griffin did not know why Kiva changed its plans, he said.

A representative from Kiva did not return a voice mail or email seeking comment. Griffin said Kiva never bought the Glenwood property.

Leaders of Glenwood Academy – formerly known as Glenwood School for Boys and Girls – decided last year to sell the Rathje Campus northwest of St. Charles because it could not afford to operate it and its campus in Glenwood.

“We wanted to be open in case someone needed to use the library,” Sugar Grove Library Director Carol Dolin said.

Dolin said the library kept busy Tuesday, but not necessarily because kids were out of school.

“Tuesdays are a busy day in general,” she said.

The storm was expected to dump between seven and 10 inches of snow on the area, with higher amounts possible, said Richard Castro, a meteorologist with the National Weather Service’s Romeoville office.

But the snow won’t be staying around too long because temperatures will rise into the 40s by the weekend, Castro said.

“Temperatures are going to be closer to what is normal for March,” he said.

But temperatures could dip back into the 30s by next week, Castro said.

“We’re not going to have summer in March like we did last year, when we had temperatures in the 80s,” he said.

St. Gall is ready for turkey dinner

By MARTHA MADDI editorial@kcchronicle.com ELBURN – St. Patrick’s Day celebrations usually involve wearing green clothes, eating corned beef and cabbage, drinking green beer and perhaps watching a parade with bagpipe music. But in Elburn, it’s all about the turkey.

St. Gall Catholic Church will host its 130th annual turkey dinner, complete with the trimmings, from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. Sunday at 120 W. Shannon St. Why turkey? Legend has it that the church used to serve the traditional corned beef and cabbage at this community feast, but when a beef shortage occurred across the country during World War II, the church turned to a local turkey farmer to save the day.

And the rest is history, said Carrie Walter, St. Gall’s communications director.

“People really like it and have resisted switching back to beef since so many other places serve that,” Walter said. “The turkey dinner makes us unique, and people seem to like the holiday meal in March.”

To accommodate many people, organizers have ordered 1,500 pounds of turkey, 550 pounds of potatoes and four cases of stuffing mix.

There also will be homemade gravy, corn, green beans, coleslaw, cranberry sauce, rolls and assorted homemade pies for dessert.

The Rev. Tim Seigel said he believes the feast is so successful because of the volunteers.

“They work hard, enjoy it and take great pride in what they’re doing,” he said.

He said the library needs that budget increase “to provide services the community really needs.”

“At the moment, our hands are tied with what we can do,” he said.

Incumbent Bergman said he feels the board is “finally getting our act together,” noting the increased library hours. If elected, he said he hopes to improve the library’s collection.

“That’s something we continue to do,” he said. “Whenever you’re running an organization, you always have a lot of small changes that can be made. You can do things to help everybody do their job better.”

DeBartolo, who could not be reached for comment, previously told the Chronicle that one of his goals would be to generate revenues so the library could expand its hours. He also has said the library could be more aggressive about renting out its meeting rooms to local businesses.

SUGAR GROVE – Four candidates will be on the April ballot to fill four seats on the Sugar Grove library board, and a fifth write-in candidate hopes to land one of those seats.

Incumbent Robert Bergman, Edward DeBartolo and write-in candidate Pat Graceffa hope to fill two six-year terms. Incumbent Anthony Oliver is running for one four-year term, and Louise Coffman is running for one two-year term.

For some candidates, establishing a long-range plan for the library is a top priority, while others said they want to focus on enhancing the library’s book collection

and raise the library’s operating budget.

Coffman said she sees a need for a long-range plan for the library because she didn’t think the current board had that in mind.

Pure Oil building

By JONATHAN BILYK jbilyk@shawmedia.com GENEVA – A bank has opened for business inside a historical gas station building in the city’s downtown.

This week, Geneva Bank & Trust began processing transactions at its new facility in the 500 block of West State Street in Geneva in a design that incorporates the former Pure Oil building as the bank’s drive-up structure.

The Pure Oil building dates from 1935, when it was built as a service station. Most recently, the building had been leased to former retail tenant, Pure Gardener.

Last fall, St. Charles Bank & Trust, which manages operations at the Geneva Bank & Trust, took ownership of the Pure Oil building, along with a neighboring structure.

Since October, the bank has renovated both buildings to make them the home for Geneva Bank & Trust.

Geneva Bank & Trust previously had operated from a branch location on Kaneville Road.

The redevelopment plan for that corner had been controversial, with some people questioning whether the ren-

ovations would compromise the historical integrity of the site.

St. Charles Bank & Trust President Tom Hansen said the original plan drafted by the bank called for the demolition of the Pure Oil building.

But he said conversations with Geneva city officials and members of the community produced a different plan that prompted the preservation and renovations on the site instead.

During construction, Hansen said architects persuaded the bank to add a couple of details to accent the historical nature of the structure.

The architects tracked down an authentic Pure Oil sign and post in Virginia and had them shipped back to Illinois.

The sign was restored and mounted inside the Geneva building. The post then was erected outside the bank, the bank had a Geneva Bank & Trust sign made in the style of the Pure Oil sign and then mounted it atop the post.

The bank also acquired an antique bank vault door from a former bank location in Glen Ellyn and installed it as the vault door in its Geneva office.

Village’s future takes center stage

By AL LAGATTOLLA alagattolla@shawmedia.com ELBURN – Village leaders and residents took a look at Elburn’s future on several levels Monday.

Details were worked out at an open hearing on Elburn’s 2013 comprehensive plan, as Village Board members and residents pointed out final suggestions to those from Images Inc., who were there to gather feedback in anticipation of the plan being brought to a vote March 18.

Although the village pushed back its scheduled vote on allowing video gambling in town – becuase board members Jerry Schmidt and Ethan Hastert were not in attendance – some residents voiced their opposition and backed board member Ken Anderson, who has spoken against it.

And residents talked about the plans for the Elburn Station development, which is set to face a vote March 18. The project would bring 2,200 new homes to the village over a 20year period in the area near the Metra Station. A resident, Tammy Osborne, brought up questions residents have had about the development, which were answered by the board.

The comprehensive plan has been an ongoing project in the

village for about a year. Images Inc., a consulting firm, has been working to update the plan. Carrie Hanson, the firm’s director of planning and government relations, was in attendance Monday and went over the plans, which are available to view online at www.elburn.il.us. The work is funding through the Chicago Metropolitan Agency for Planning.

Trustees questioned areas that were zoned industrial and commercial. Hansen said the plan was to boost industrial use, which she identified as a need in the village. There are commercial zones planned along Route 38 and on Route 47, past Keslinger Road. But the commercial zone didn’t extend to Hughes Road, with zoning instead calling for single-family residential in that area, which trustees said was unlikely. That is something that could be changed.

Hansen stressed the plans could be altered, but having such zoning in place could help village leaders deny future projects if they don’t fit into the plan.

Resident Alan Herra said he wants the village to offer options for youths in the future – specifically playing fields, parks and a swimming pool. He said a park district would be welcomed. Hansen said that was a “legislative decision, not a land-use plan.”

Mediacom customers in Kaneville, Elburn, Maple Park and Sugar Grove soon will receive more HD channels as part of the company’s plans to upgrade its network technology.

Mediacom’s upgrade will remove analog TV reception for all but a limited number of basic broadcast channels, which is a change to digitalonly reception for channels 23 to 78. The upgrade will include the addition of several dozen channels in HD to deliver an HD lineup with at least 100 channels.

“HD is what the world has changed to, just like it went from black and white to color,” said Phyllis Peters, communications director for Mediacom.

Analog channels will begin to phase out May 15. The change to an all-digital lineup will be completed two weeks later. To receive Mediacom’s

AURORA – Charles G. Hiscock has been appointed as the new principal of West Aurora High School.

West Aurora School District 129 board made the appointment at its meeting Monday. Hiscock, who will start July 1, replaces West Aurora High School co-principals Ross Truemper and Rudy Keller.

Hiscock, who expects to receive a doctorate in educational administration this spring, has been associate principal of Downers Grove North High School since 2005, according to a District 129 news release. He was picked as West Aurora principal after a selection process involving students, community members and staff, the release stated.

In the past, Hiscock has served as a dean of students, art teacher and coach in his educational career. Hiscock also served in the U. S. Army Military Po-

lice Corps and has been employed as an illustrator, the release stated.

Hiscock is working on his doctorate degree at Northern Illinois University, where he earlier earned an education specialist degree in educational administration, the release stated.

He also has master’s degrees in educational administration and fine arts-painting from Governor’s State University.

In addition, he has a bachelor of fine arts degree in art education from the University of Illinois-Chicago and an associate of arts degree from the American Academy of Fine Art. Hiscock is a member of the Illinois Principal’s Association, National Association of Secondary School Principals, the Education Law Association, Phi Kappa Phi, Palette and Chisel Academy of Fine Arts and ASCD (formerly the Association for Supervision and Curriculum Development). He also is an IHSAcertified wrestling official.

‘Building Geneva’s Future Together’ To the Editor: “There is nothing as constant as change.”

That lesson was one of the first I learned after graduating from college and entering the real world. In about five weeks Geneva voters will have a choice for mayor for the first time since April 3, 2001. It could be time for a change in Geneva.

In the last 12 years, a lot has changed about how people view their elected officials. A level of trust has been lost, and many feel they no longer have a voice. In April 2001, there were 5,354 votes cast in the race for mayor of Geneva. In 2009, only 2,193 voted in the same race. Only 16.4 percent of registered voters across all five wards in Geneva voted in the 2011 consolidated election. My professional experience in sales, marketing, program development and people management will allow me to pursue a focused effort to move Geneva forward. My plan is called “Building Geneva’s Future Together.” It is my sincere hope that you trust me to address the issues we face as Genevans and support me in my campaign for mayor.

By PETULA DVORAK The Washington Post For too many teens, dating violence is part of landscape “She got what she deserved,” declared the 16-yearold from Montgomery County, Md. The girl was fierce, with long, gold nails painted to match her pants, colored rubber bands on her braces and lots of attitude. She has had a few boyfriends and didn’t lament her messy breakup with a guy who had bullied her into giving up her online passwords. “He’s ugly now anyways,” she snapped.

I had asked her what she thought of the singer Rihanna, who is back together with Chris Brown, the man who infamously bashed up her face three years ago.

Rihanna “is an aggressive woman, Caribbean. And she stepped out of line,” Goldfingers told me.

I looked to her friend, the wise 17-year-old with purple nails. “Uh-huh,” she said. “But they’re OK now. Chris and Rihanna are OK.” Here’s the worst part – this was the girls’ attitude minutes after an intense, four-hour conference for teens on dating violence.

The teens heard songs and public service announcements and did role-playing exercises about how to identify, prevent and stop dating violence. They correctly answered questions posed by prosecutors from the Montgomery state’s attorney’s office, which has put on the conference four years in a row.

They learned about restraining orders, controlling behavior and cyber-stalking.

But still, after all that, those girls thought Rihanna somehow deserved to be beaten. It made me despondent.

Dating violence always has been a problem. And despite outreach, better laws and

smarter cops who know what to look for, technology has made it easier than ever for abusers to reach their victims.

In a study published last month in the Journal of Youth and Adolescence, researchers said that more than 25 percent of teens said they had been threatened or harassed online or through texts.

Technology gives controlling abusers a 24-hour way to reach out and digitally grab their victims, without any adult seeing the dangerous dynamic of a relationship.

“People no longer have to be actually physically together to fall victim to or perpetrate various forms of dating abuse,” said Janine Zweig, a researcher at the Urban Institute and lead author of the study.

In other words, this is a parent’s nightmare.

More than half of the kids in the study said they had experienced physical abuse, from scratching to choking. And one-

third said that they had been sexually coerced.

“It’s a whole new world out there. Nothing like what I had,” said one mother who brought her daughter to Sunday’s conference.

Throughout the day, kids were reminded of the tragic story of Yeardley Love, the pretty blonde University of Virginia lacrosse player who was killed by her jealous, drunken, jock boyfriend, George Huguely. He now is in prison.

In person, they looked perfect. But some of their most vicious fighting took place online, hidden so no one could see – or help.

In a the room full of 16- to 18-year-old boys, the workshop focused on this dynamic.

School counselor Jason Kling discussed a few scenarios where the stalker, beater and aggressor was always the male.

“Generally, we are considered the perpetrators,” he said. The room buzzed with agreement.

Kling pointed toward the girls’ workshop down the hall.

“The girls over there are being empowered to speak up,” he said.

Even if girls egg guys on, yell at them, tease them or cheat on them, it’s still not cool to hit, Kling told the boys.

Over in the girls’ room, prosecutor Amanda Michalski talked about online abuse and sexting. She asked the girls – polite girls whose moms dropped them off at the conference – whether any of them or their friends have been pressured to text nude pictures of themselves to a boyfriend. The response was almost unanimous.

“Yeah. Totally. He was all, ‘You can trust me,’ ” one girl said.

Assessing the overall responses at the conference, we still have a long, long way to go before teens understand that the only thing anyone deserves is respect.

Aldermen reject historical classification for house

Aldermen debate arch planned for North River

By ERIC SCHELKOPF eschelkopf@shawmedia.com BATAVIA – For the second time in a month, Batavia aldermen have rejected a recommendation from the Batavia Historic Preservation Commission to upgrade the historical classification of a building from “contributing” to “significant.”

Aldermen on Monday rejected the commission’s recommendation to upgrade a house owned by Bethany Lutheran Church from the status of “contributing” to “significant.”

Seventh Ward Alderman Dawn Tenuta was the only alderman to support the recommendation.

The commission has worked about two years on an update to the historic district property classification.

The Batavia City Council last month rejected the commission’s recommendation to reclassify a building at 106 N. River St. from “contributing” to “significant.”

At the time, aldermen and Batavia Mayor Jeff Schielke had voiced concerns that there was little historical significance to the building other than the signs on it, and that upgrading the classification of the building could hinder potential redevelopment of the property.

Bethany Lutheran Church officials had voiced similar concerns.

Attorney Ralph Beck, who also is a member of the church, told historic preservation commissioners the church objected to the upgrade in classification.

He said the church was concerned about what would

be required to maintain the house, thought to have been constructed in the late 1800s or early 1900s, if the classification were upgraded.

He told commissioners while the church did not have any plans for the building, it might seek a permit from the city in the future to demolish the building.

Historical Preservation Commission Chairman Phil Bus said the house was a “great” example of Italianate construction, and has been remarkably well-preserved.

While voting against the upgrade in classification, 1st Ward Alderman Michael O’Brien said he was concerned the building will be demolished for additional parking.

“We have plenty of parking downtown,” he said. “But we need to share our parking.”

As proposed, the arch would be placed at the entrance to North River Street where it meets with Wilson Street.

“I think lights are important,” she said at the Batavia City Council Community Development Committee meeting. “We don’t want that to be coming from ambient street light.”

She also was concerned about the arch’s design.

“This structure is going to be there for a very long time,” Tenuta said. “It needs to be the right structure for River Street.”

Fourth Ward Alderman Susan Stark voiced concerns that lights could drive the cost of the $95,000 arch even higher.

“We keep piling on the money with one particular architectural detail for the street,” Stark said.

Aldermen plan to discuss the issue at the next Community Development Committee meeting March 26.

North River Street has been transformed into a curbless street in which pedestrians have priority over cars as part of last year’s streetscape project.

Streetscape improvements to Wilson Street are set to begin in June.

A

ndrew Kimball was somewhat of a misfit in St. Francis’ defensive-minded boys basketball program last season.

By his own assessment, Kimball played pedestrian defense, yet remained a valuable role player for the stingy Spartans thanks largely to his perimeter shooting prowess.

This season, Kimball is no longer an outlier.

Kimball has become a much more well-rounded player as a senior – especially on the defensive end – earning high marks from coach Bob Ward, whose Spartans are preparing to face Sycamore in an IHSA Class 3A Freeport Sectional semifinal.

“Defense was a problem for me last year,” Kimball said. “I’ve been working on foot speed and quickness and getting the defensive principles down. Last year was our first year with coach Ward and his push defensive style.

This year I’ve been getting more used to the style of play and getting my defensive reps better.”

The Spartans were scheduled to face Sycamore tonight but the game was moved to Thursday since the other Freeport semifinal, Rockford Lutheran against Woodstock, was among numerous sectional games statewide postponed from Tuesday to today because of snowy weather.

For the second straight year, the Spartans have won 20 games and a regional crown. Ward, a coaching lifer, said he can’t remember many teams that have been so successful without a high-level scorer; Kimball and Jason Pisarski are averaging about 10 points a game, with several teammates hot on their heels.

But, much like last season, St. Francis (20-7) is thriving defensively. The Spartans’ victims at the Illinois Math and Science Academy Regional – Kaneland and Aurora Central Catholic – combined to average less than 38 points in losses to St. Francis last week.

“He’s the type of kid that I think the best description of him would be he’s steady,” Ward said. “He’s a real consistent kid. I think that just because he’s such a good shooter, people may not realize that there are other parts of this game. He doesn’t turn the ball over. He’s a real, real sound defender. He’s the type of kid that not only is he sound and efficient guarding his own guy, but he’s a guy that plays really good team defense. He’s always in a position to offer help.”

Kimball is one of the few guys on a mostly new-look St. Francis squad who saw substantial minutes on last year’s team. Graduated lead-

ers such as Ryan Coyle, Zach Roswold and Nick Donati were big influences on Kimball, who in turn has helped bring this year’s Spartans up to speed.

“I think he brought that over to us this year,” said Spartans junior forward Kilian Brown who, like Kimball, is a Geneva resident. “He helps us on defense with what he learned from them and teaches us what he learned from them on offense.”

Kimball credited Ward’s defensive teachings with helping the Spartans survive their heavy graduation losses.

The Spartans’ defensive nuts and bolts – pressuring ball-handlers all over the floor, forcing them toward the

sideline, remaining vigilant on the help-line – are back in full force, even if they took Kimball a little longer to get down pat.

“He demands both sides,” Kimball said. “Our defense has been what we emphasize most. You want to be more defensive than offensive because we feel we can get farther on defense than our offensive abilities.”

If St. Francis prevails in Thursday’s all-Spartans showdown, it would face a quick turnaround to Friday’s Freeport Sectional final since weather backed up the semifinals by a day. Ward plans to trek to northwestern Illinois to scout tonight’s Rockford Lutheran-Woodstock game, making for a potentially hectic 72-hour travel schedule.

“It’s that time of year – that’s kind of what makes it unique and fun,” Ward said.

“Everyone is scrambling to get tapes and everyone, in a short period of time, you’re trying to get [preparation] in.”

Teams preparing for St. Francis will need to worry about Kimball as much more than a shooter.

Just the same, Kimball hasn’t forgotten how to knock down 20-footers.

“When we need a 3, that’s the guy we go to,” Brown said. “For sure.”

Hess intends to major in business. He plans to aggressively hit the weight room in hopes of making himself a viable prospect in the Hoosiers’ backfield.

“I really do think if I work hard enough I can get a chance and take advantage of it,” Hess said. “I really believe that.”

Meanwhile, one of the key Geneva offensive linemen who helped pave the way for Hess’ prowess – senior Connor Chapman – said Tuesday he continues to weigh his options, which include playing col-

lege football, college basketball or giving up sports in college.

A strong senior season in basketball made college hoops a late-developing possibility for the 6-foot-5 Chapman.

“I’d say probably football would be more natural for me but I think I’d enjoy either,” Chapman said.

Jorgensen heads west for success: While all the Tri-Cities basketball teams have been knocked out of the postseason, one Batavia resident can call himself a state champion.

Cornerstone stormed back from a 20-3, early deficit against a team from Collinsville in the championship game, played in Kankakee.

“It was probably the biggest deficit we faced all season, only losing four games before that, so we were definitely in the hole,” Jorgensen said. “I thought to myself I couldn’t ever lose focus or give up. … Luckily we got hot in the second quarter, and the game just worked from there. It was an incredible comeback.”

Jorgensen, who has committed to play college ball at Judson University, averaged about 21 points a game as a senior and was the team’s captain.

Jorgensen acknowledged a huge cultural shift transferring from a school of almost 2,000 students to one with about 50 students in the high school grades, but said he has appreciated the family atmosphere at Cornerstone.

“It definitely works with me,” Jorgensen said. “It’s something I’ve really loved over these last couple years.”

Compher to be introduced as East Carolina AD DeKALB – Northern Illinois athletic director Jeff Compher appears to be taking the same position at East Carolina University in Greenville, N.C. A source close to the situation told Shaw Media that Compher has been hired by East Carolina

as its new Director of Athletics, replacing Terry Holland, who retired earlier this year.

The source was granted anonymity in order to avoid reprisal.

A report from WNCT-9 in Greenville also says Compher will be introduced today at a 4 p.m. news conference on

campus.

Compher, 53, would oversee a program that is a member of Conference USA, but will Jeff Compher join the Big East (as it’s currently known) in football in 2014. He

has ties to the state as he spent 2000-04 as Western Carolina’s athletic director and worked in various positions at N.C. State for 13 years.

He was an assistant athletic director in Raleigh from 198692.

During his time in DeKalb, Compher has hired two football

coaches as well as a men’s and women’s basketball coach.

He also oversaw the start of construction on the Chessick Practice Center, which is supposed to be completed sometime this fall.

Geneva senior running back Bobby Hess faced that classic conundrum – go to the big school and face the long odds of a walk-on or choose a smaller program that offered a higher likelihood of major playing time.

Hess is opting for the tougher path.

After attending a day for prospective walk-ons for the Indiana football program in late January, Hess decided shortly thereafter to commit to the Hoosiers as a preferred walkon.

He was likely bound for the Hoosier state regardless. Hess also was seriously considering playing at Butler before deciding to give Big Ten football a whirl.

“That was definitely something I had to think about,” Hess said. “It’s always been a dream and a goal of mine to be able to play on the big stage, to try to get that opportunity, and since this opened, I just thought I have to go for it.”

A Kane County Chronicle FirstTeam All-Area running back for the 2012 season, the elusive Hess rushed for 1,496 yards and 22 touchdowns for the 4-5 Vikings.

Hess said the meet-and-greet with IU coaches and players in January emboldened him that he’d be given a serious look in coach Kevin Wilson’s Hoosiers program. Wilson was a walk-on in college at North Carolina.

“First off their coach mentioned he was a walk-on, so he understands what we’re going through, and one of their tight ends who was a walkon last year, I think the starter got hurt and he ended up getting some serious playing time last year as a freshman, so that was interesting,” Hess said.

Chronicle sports reporter Kevin Druley spoke with Stanko about his week. The following is an edited transcript: Coach [Tom Poulin] has said you made some plays during the week where he stopped in film session and

said “That’s how we want to do it.” Where has this stretch come from?

I think just before the game, [you] mentally focus. Doing all the right things on the court.

We’re just playing together, and that’s what made me look good out there.

How were things in the locker room after the Larkin game, knowing it was the team’s last game together?

It was definitely a different feeling just because this team was so close. Just saying goodbye to everybody is sad.

Any other thoughts on the season?

It’s tough how it ended, but we know we really were playing as a team at the end.

Sean McCaffrey and Andy Thompson successfully navigated their share of ups and downs during four seasons as St. Charles lacrosse coaching cohorts.

McCaffrey assisted Thompson with the St. Charles boys co-op during their first three springs together before filling the same role last season once Thompson opted to coach St. Charles North when the co-op split.

Now that the men have flipflopped roles – Thompson ceded control of the North Stars in late fall – they have neither envisioned nor experienced any awkwardness.

“It’s kind of nice to have your mentor as your assistant,” McCaffrey said, “so that’s an easy transition.”

Thompson, a 1999 St. Charles High graduate, enters the upcoming season with a decidedly smaller profile than usual. A former player who coached St. Charles to four successive IHSLA Final Four appearances from 2007-10, he cited family concerns in a letter addressed to North players and their families.

“With my growing family and growing business, I do need to make sure that my family comes first and that I spend my time outside of practice and games being with and supporting them,” Thompson wrote.

Thompson is a co-founder of the Naperville-based New

Wave Lacrosse club, as well as the organization’s director of club coaching and director of high school programs.

McCaffrey, a marketing data analyst at DeVry University, was a Geneva senior at the time he and player parent Tammy Marcozzi started the Geneva club program in November 2004.

Thompson will serve as the team’s offensive coordinator on a team that returns much of its core from 2012.

Additions to the lowerlevel coaching staff include Hunter Shodeen, McCaffrey’s former Geneva teammate who will guide North’s inaugural freshman team. Cam Caruso, a St. Charles East product who starred at NCAA Division III Babson (Mass.) College, rejoins the program as a JV assistant.

“That’s kind of how far our program is going now,” McCaffrey said. “We’re very pleased to see that alumni are attracted to come back and coach with us.”

Switching fields: Football and lacrosse occasionally dovetail for athletes, as the latter maintains just the right contact quotient for those looking to be chippy during the spring.

For Matt Lally, a Marmion senior from St. Charles, lacrosse is about to serve as a barometer.

After suffering separate ankle and leg injuries in his final two football seasons, Lally joined the Cadets lacrosse team to test his preparedness for physicality and a possible college football career.

“I just finally wanted to get that whole team mentality back,” Lally said. “I don’t really remember what it’s like, so I want to play another contact sport. Lacrosse has been good so far.”

Lally, a defender, progressively has learned his new craft alongside veteran Cadets longpoles Connor Boyne and Sam Tonner. Lally missed all but the final game of the 2012 football season after breaking his leg in August. Lally said he’s leaning toward the University of St. Thomas, an NCAA Division III school in Minnesota’s Twin Cities.

“Every time I hit somebody, it makes me feel like football, so it’s really going to help me with my college decision,” Lally said.

Portuguese wine has outside influences The formation of the European Union had a significant impact on Portuguese winemakers.

With the opportunity to examine wine cultures outside of Portugal, winemakers were able to further their own skills.

Traditional winemaking methods were refined, technological advancements introduced and the easing of restrictions allowed for the liberation of creative freedoms for winemakers.

The result was a historic stylistic shift that continues to influence Portuguese winemakers.

Winemaker spotlight New ideas had finally permeated through the barrier of the old guard that made wines in Portugal.

The year was 1986 and Portugal had just joined the EU. “Until the early ’80s, the winemaking in Portugal was too focused on our own winemaking experiences,” said Miguel Nora, ViniPortugal senior area manager of North America. “Winemakers only learned from their ancestors/ predecessors, with a few exceptions, without a link to what was being done outside our borders.”

Research and development rose to the forefront as young

winemakers returned from internships abroad with a new cooperative system in place that allowed their newfound knowledge to shine. Portuguese wines experienced a rebirth.

Portuguese winemakers have more than 250 indigenous varieties from which to choose, and – like Spain, the neighboring country on the Iberian Peninsula which has found greatness with Grenache, Douro winemakers are headed to their own renaissance.

3. Add sausages; continue cooking 5 minutes until browned and heated through, turning occasionally.

5. Add potato salad and black pepper to skillet.

6. Stir to combine with onion mixture. Return sausages to skillet. Cook 2 to 3 minutes to heat through.

Unpleasant colonoscopy prep could save life Dear Doctor K: I’m scheduled to have my first colonoscopy. My friends tell me the preparation is worse than the procedure. What am I in for?

Dear Reader: From my long experience as a doctor – and as a patient – I think your friends have it right.

The large intestine (colon) is a long tube through which digested material passes. In a colonoscopy, a flexible tube with a light and camera at the end is placed inside the colon. What the doctor is looking for are abnormalities in the circular inner wall of the colon, including tumors, bleeding and inflammation.

Colon cancer usually starts in small polyps on the inner surface of the colon. So with one test, these precancerous polyps can be spotted and removed with a colonoscope. (I’ve put an illustration of this on my website, AskDoctorK.com.)

The doctor can’t see the wall when there is feces inside the colon. So before the colonoscopy is performed, the colon needs to be cleared out. That’s what the bowel preparation – or, simply, “the prep” – is for. The prep typi-

ASK DOCTOR K Anthony L. Komaroff cally involves drinking about a gallon of a foul-tasting solution that provokes diarrhea, so you spend a lot of time near, and on, the toilet. Remember “near.”

You don’t want to be too far away.

The day before the colonoscopy, you’ll have to stop eating solid foods. You’ll switch over to a clear liquid diet.

The traditional bowel preps are polyethylene glycol (PEG) solutions. They wash fecal matter out of the colon by flooding the gut with fluid. The problem is the amount you need to drink for a good bowel cleansing. That would be a cup every 10 minutes until the gallon is gone or until your stool is watery and clear, whichever comes first.

If you take laxative pills before you drink the PEG solution, the amount of solution you need to drink can be cut in half.

A few years ago, guidelines changed to make the prep a little

easier. Patients can now drink half of the liquid prep the day before the examination and the other half the day it’s scheduled – instead of all of it the day before.

Once you’re cleaned out, the colonoscopy is performed. Most often, you’re given a sedative just before the procedure begins.

That leaves you and your colon very relaxed. You may wander in and out of dreamland. You feel things, but experiencing pain is unusual.

The sedative dims your memory of what happened. I can remember the names of many of my high school friends, but can’t tell you much about the colonoscopy I had last year. On the other hand, I could tell you a lot about the prep I had last year.

Colonoscopy is the best defense against colorectal cancer.

So while the prep is unpleasant, it’s a small price to pay for a procedure that may save your life.

Teen curious about difference between university, college Dr. Wallace: I’m a junior in high school, and I’m planning to be an attorney after finishing my education. I was thinking about attending the University of Illinois or Northwestern University because they have, I’ve been told, excellent law schools.

But my school counselor, who is a graduate of a liberal arts college, is trying to convince me that it would be more beneficial for me to attend a liberal arts college.

She keeps telling me that liberal arts graduates are more wellrounded.

What exactly are liberal arts colleges, and why is a degree from them so “wellrounded?” – Nameless, Chicago, Ill. It may be that your counselor is trying to get you to be less singleminded and careerfocused in your higher education goals at this point in your life.

A liberal education provides students with a sound foundation in such basic disciplines as English, philosophy, history, psychology, physics, mathematics and music. The idea, according to Sally Springer and Marion Franck, authors of “Admission Matters,” is that people with this type of education are well prepared regardless of their ultimate career choice. Indeed, they are well prepared for life.

What distinguishes small liberal arts colleges from many large universities is that they usually have small classes taught

The secret of playing bridge excellently is merely a matter of thinking the excellent thought at the right moment. Really, it’s a matter of programming your mind to sift the information and reach the winning conclusion.

In this deal, West leads the diamond jack against seven spades. South wins with his ace and runs a torrent of six trumps and three hearts. What should West discard?

In theory, North’s jump to four spades denied a first- or second-round control. But with a true Yarborough (no card higher than a nine), he felt justified in a slight fib. South then hoped he would be able to avoid a diamond loser; maybe partner would have the queen or a doubleton diamond.

Since dummy had no help, South had to run his winners, starting with his trumps, and hope that the defenders would err.

West started with four painless pitches: two hearts and two clubs. Then, though, when the three top hearts came, he was less comfortable. He was not sure whether to throw diamonds or clubs. What was the key clue?

If South had started with a doubleton club, he would have ruffed the second in the dummy.

So, since South held at most one club, West had to stay glued to his diamonds.
