Lemont woman realizes dream with new boutique in town

By JANICE HOPPE jhoppe@shawmedia.com LEMONT — Realizing it would take years to become an anchorwoman in Chicago for a major network, Ela Czupta abandoned that dream and began putting all her energy into her other passion — fashion.

After graduating from Columbia College in Chicago in 2010 and ruling out moving to a smaller market than Chicago to become a TV anchor, Czupta knew she needed to make a decision as to what she wanted to do with her life. So, she decided to combine her passion for writing and fashion.

“Fashion has been a passion since I was born. I remember playing dress-up wearing my mom’s clothes,” Czupta said.

opened the doors of Generation Bliss at 14184 McCarthy Road in Lemont.

“Anchorwoman or not — I knew eventually I would open a boutique,” Czupta said. “This is really exciting. This is my baby. I envisioned a boutique and literally, it just came to life.”

Generation Bliss originally started out as a fashion blog in 2010. In the blog, which still

runs today, Czupta writes articles on pieces of clothing and how to mix those pieces.

Photographs of her showing how to mix high- and low-end pieces are also attached in her articles.

In June 2012, she expanded Generation Bliss into an online shop of clothing and accessories for men and women. She said sales were great, but a majority of the purchases came from the east and west coasts and she wanted to bring her fashion to her hometown.

“I thought, ‘How can I get fashion in Lemont?’” she said.

“People need to see it, feel, touch and try it on. It’s a different vibe walking into a store than online. Why don’t I open a boutique? It’s always been a dream of mine.”

The clothing and accessories in Generation Bliss are targeted for men and women ages

20 to 40 with the prices ranging from $30 to $325, depending on the piece.

“When someone walks in, I want to dress them,” Czupta said. “If you are going to an event, on a date or you just want to dress in a different way — I am here to dress you from head to toe. I can think of 10 million ways to work it into everyday.”

Currently, the boutique offers designer pieces from the United States and Australia but Czupta plans to one day, further down the road, create her own Generation Bliss clothing line.

In March, the spring clothing line will hit Generation Bliss and a shoe selection is also expected in the near future.

“It’s our generation and what better way to describe our generation than in bliss?” Czupta said.

“’Lincoln,’ because our country is divided right now and I think we need to get back together like Lincoln tried to get us back together, hence the Civil War. We need to work together and get back to the United States of America.”

Citizens group aims to delay Lemont Sports Complex

By JANICE HOPPE jhoppe@shawmedia.com LEMONT — A group of 14 Lemont residents have combined their efforts to try to postpone the proposed $21 million Lemont Sports Complex.

As of midweek, the group, formed under the name Citizens for Open Government, had garnered more than 600 signatures from registered Lemont voters — 785 signatures are needed by March 2 to push the proposed development onto election ballots in April 2014.

One of the 600-plus to sign the petition is Sen. Christine Radogno (41st District), who said she signed it as a resident of Lemont.

“I believe a project of this magnitude deserve a thorough review,” Radogno said. “Like others familiar with it, I’m currently taking time to educate myself on the details. Some believe they need more time to

Hank Olenick, a member of Citizens for Open Government, said organizing the petition is about giving the community a voice. The group is circulating the motto “Let us vote.”

(sooner)?” Olenick asked, referring to the proposed development. “It’s a back-room deal and we aren’t happy about it.”

Other group members Jim Ladas and Janet Hughes, a former District 113A Board of Education member, have reasoned that Lemont residents should have a right to vote on a multimillion dollar expenditure.

“As citizens we have let ourselves down and haven’t been involved and now we are put in a corner and our only alternative is to get this on a ballot,” Ladas said. “We deserve to have a vote on something like this.”

Ladas added that members of the Citizens for Open Government group aren’t necessarily opposed to the sports complex, which has been pitched as bringing in 600,000 people annually to the downtown Lemont area.

“If they can convince me it’s a good idea, I’ll be for it,” he said.

“I just want to have the time to research it myself and decide.”

The Lemont Sports Complex is proposed to have four indoor and outdoor turf fields, a multipurpose area and an outdoor skating rink for the winter months on 26 acres at the north end of Stephen Street. It will be open to baseball, softball, rugby, lacrosse and soccer.

Construction would be paid for using sales tax, Tax Increment Financing district funds, income tax and operation revenue from the facility, officials said.

“It’s a fast-track project,” Lemont Mayor Brian Reaves said Jan. 28. “I want the facility to be ready to go for the fall season.”

Thevillagewouldownandoperate the facility, which Reaves stressed earlier this month would not be funded by any additional taxes to residents.

“It’s a project that again, I can’t stress enough, will not go on residents’ property tax bills,” Reaves said. “Just like the po-

lice department, the renovation of village hall, the new public works facility — none of that goes on their property tax. It never has and never will.”

If the petition is filed to the village of Lemont, construction on the complex would be delayed until the April 2014 election, when residents would vote in favor or against the proposed development via a referendum.

If a petition is not filed, the Lemont Village Board is expected to issue $21 million in bonds at a meeting in March. Groundbreaking would then begin that month, with a targeted completion date in November.

On Saturday, the group will bring the petition to Illinois Bar & Grill, 1131 State St., where it will be available for signing from 5 to 7 p.m.

Mindfow Cafe not a fit for Lemont, owners say Cafe closes abruptly after six months in business

LEMONT — Owners of Mindflow Cafe are blaming a lack of demand in the Lemont community for the restaurant’s sudden closing last week after just six months in business.

Keith Nowakowski with Mindflow Group, which operated the cafe, said the business’s concept of a central hub for business professionals and creative thinkers to network, co-work and gain access to their success just wasn’t a fit in Lemont.

“Lemont is dynamic with amazing businesses, a creative community and a connected vibe. However, the demand for the Mindflow Cafe was not there at this time,” he said in a press release announcing the closure.

The cafe, which offered

work space, high speed Internet and areas to have group meetings, announced on its Facebook page that Feb. 14 would be the final operating day.

The post states: “Change is coming. Today, Thursday February 14 will be Mindflow Cafe’s last day open to the public. The Mindflow Group will continue to offer business programming, educational resources, marketing and consulting services.

We apologize for any inconvenience this may cause. We are very grateful to everyone who was able to be a part of the cafe. Thank you for your support.”

It’s the second business to close at that location, 206 Main St., in less than two years. “...this must be The Place” closed its doors in July 2011.

Village Administrator Ben Wehmeier said he expects a

new business to open its doors in the downtown storefront in the future.

“It’s still the same (building) owners and something new will be coming,” Wehmeier said. “They are looking at new ideas.”

“The (building owners) tried a new concept in the community and there was some support,” Wehmeier added. “Maybe it wasn’t right for here. They are looking to see what might fit better in the community.”

The Lemont-based firm Mindflow Group will still offer marketing and consulting services, Nowakowski said in the release.

“We are grateful to everyone who has supported the cafe,” Nowakowski wrote.

“We still love the idea of a creative co-working space — perhaps it was an idea ahead of its time.”

Freshman stirs up mental health cause with Lemont community

By JANICE HOPPE jhoppe@shawmedia.com LEMONT — Annie Ernst is making mental health the mission of her young life.

The Lemont High School freshman is calling on Lemont residents to band together for a fundraiser at the Front Street Cantina, 319 Front St., on Sunday to raise money for To Write Love on Her Arms, a non-profit movement dedicated to presenting hope and finding help for people struggling with depression, addiction, self-injury and suicide.

An extension of the TWLOHA movement is “The Storytellers High School Campaign”, a campaign designed for high school students to raise money and compete with other area schools to host a TWLOHA event that would include a speaker on mental health.

Annie hopes to bring the event to Lemont High School.

If she doesn’t make it, Annie said she will keep trying every year in an effort to bring attention to an issue that struck her family.

“I hope this sticks in people’s minds and they really get something out of it,” she said of her efforts. “... Many people can struggle with (mental health issues) silently. I think some people can be struggling with it and not know what it is. People can identify what they are feeling if they know more about it.”

she has been raising money through private donations and fundraisers at school. The fundraising competition runs from February through March.

Lemont High School Counselor Denise Dalton has been helping Annie organize various fundraisers, including one in which Annie sold TWLOHA bracelets for $1 and had seniors artistically write “Love” on students’ arms for 50 cents.

“As a counselor, I don’t think we can do enough to remind kids that they are loved, they are special and most of all, the pain that can come with adolescence is temporary,” Dalton said. “The feelings can be overwhelming, but seeking help from those who love you is a great first step.”

So far, Annie said she has raised about $400 for her cause. To fulfill her goal of winning the TWLOHA event by finishing as the top fundraising school in a bracket, she said she will need to raise

LEMONT — Plans to hire more teachers in District 113A have been put on hold.

On Tuesday, the District 113A Board of Education postponed approval of the district’s proposed five-year strategic plan to take a further look at the projected expenditures included in the plan, which proposes hiring seven additional teachers for the 2013-14 school year.

During the meeting, board members shared concern about what they said was a lack of specifics given regarding the finances involved in the strategic plan.

Church offers indoor basketball tournament LEMONT — Lemont’s First Church of the Nazarene is sponsoring its 12th annual “Absolutely Free 3 on 3” indoor basketball tournament at 5 p.m. March 1.

The double elimination tournament is separated into two grade divisions for youth in grades 9 through 12. The tournament is also separated into brackets for both male and female.

Trophies will be awarded to the winning teams in each division and awards will also be given for a low-rim slam dunk contest; a three-point shoot-out and drawings for many other prizes during the evening.

The event is sponsored by the church’s EDGE youth ministry.

LEMONT — District 113A is in the clear this month after learning a fund transfer into the transportation fund to cover a payment to the state won’t be necessary.

Earlier this month, business manager Barbara Germany told the District 113A Board of Education that the Illinois State Board of Education won’t allow the district to defer a $77,000 payment as district officials had requested.

Illinois must put its students on a level playing field of learning with students across the country and around the world so they will be successful in 21st century careers.

To meet this challenge, the state is making significant changes to its education structure to demand higher levels of learning than ever before.

The Illinois State Board of Education has adopted the Common Core State Standards, which outline more rigorous standards for the essential skills and content students need to be successful in college or the workforce after high school graduation.

The partnership demands schools and families help students be prepared for more rigorous learning, so that a higher levels of achievement will continue to grow.

The state is also changing how we prepare teachers and implementing new principal and teacher evaluations that incorporate student growth.

Some of these changes have already begun. Each principal’s annual performance evaluation includes student growth targets this school year, and efforts to support their achievement are continually being reviewed to ensure we make progress toward our targets.

Two Lemont residents concerned about their health have taken advantage of a weight-loss program operated by the Lemont Park District. Ellen and Dino LeKousis enrolled in Lemont Losers at The CORE. This is a seven-week program where teams compete to lose the highest percentage of body weight. Ellen was diagnosed with stage one breast cancer last year and discovered that women’s fat holds estrogen, which speeds the growth of tumors. As a result, far fewer students will be able to meet and exceed performance expectations. We expect that student ISAT scores will drop because of the changes in how the test results are measured.

However, these higher expectations do not mean that our students know less or are less capable. The ISBE is simply raising the bar on how much it expects from students and teachers.

The work ahead will prove difficult, but the reward will be even greater. The move to a more comprehensive accountability system with higher standards for students and better evaluation and preparation tools for teachers will ultimately better prepare our students and keep them on the path to college and career readiness.

Taste Indian Chinese Cuisine

He explains that the combination is a popular trend in India, where Chinese immigrants attuned their culinary skills to suit the tastes of the local population.

The spices of India infuse the dishes at Pereira’s restaurant inside the Meadowbrook Shopping Center on 63rd Street in Downers Grove, just east of Belmont Road (Finley). The eatery is tucked along the side of a courtyard in the western half of the mall. Inside the space, he has created an appealing dining room, where hanging lamps are turned low in the evening and add to the warm ambiance.

While beer and wine are available, one of the favorite beverages is the mango lassi, a creamy concoction of mango in a yogurt base, colorfully presented in a cocktail glass. He says the drink is an Indian favorite.

Pereira’s background includes working with the luxurious Taj Hotels group in India, and helping launch Indian restaurants in the Chicago area. Taste is the first establishment of his own.

“This is my dream,” he says. “I wanted to have a restaurant where I could serve people quality food for a very good price.”

He says the chefs are happy to accommodate special requests and cater to the American palate, adding, “Since we make everything fresh, we can make (dishes) mild to medium to spicy.”

Taste offers vegetarian dishes, in addition to chicken, seafood, beef and lamb, as well as gluten-free options. No pork is served, and no peanut oil is used, only vegetable.

A fan is Tanya Schmidt of Downers Grove, who enjoys dining there with husband Carl, or ordering carryout.

“They make the best soup in the universe — the Manchow soup,” she says, noting she traveled frequently to China on business before becoming a teacher. “It beats anything I’ve had there.”

She says she’s hooked on the General Tsao’s chicken, while her husband recommends the shredded lamb with hot garlic sauce.

She praises the delicate spring rolls, and the wide choice in vegetarian dishes.

“With all the corporate restaurants, it’s so lovely to have a small, privately owned restaurant that makes wonderful food,” she says. “You get very personal service, and they care about whether you like what you’ve eaten there.”

Having lunch with her family recently was Anu Mathur of Burr Ridge.

“Everything is tasty,” she said as they shared dishes, noting friends recommended they try Taste. “We’ll be back. They do a good job catering to what you want. (For example, making it the) medium spicy I requested.”

Indian ice cream is made in house. Available in pistachio or mango flavors, a petite portion adds a sweet finish to the meal.

After Hours Film Society unites movie lovers

By ALLISON HORNE msleditorial@shawmedia.com Debbie Venezia of Glen Ellyn received a phone call in 1999 that would change her life — and the future of her After Hours Film Society.

The call was from Shirley Johnson, co-owner of the Tivoli Theatre in Downers Grove, inquiring whether Debbie would be interested in transplanting the society to the larger venue.

The move was a good one, and Venezia calls it a dream come true. The 1,000-seat Tivoli has ample room for the average 440 guests who come to the movies, and enough to accommodate the majority of the society’s 1,100 members.

Meeting each second and fourth Monday, the society features foreign and art films, as well as classics. Upcoming films include “Central Park Five,” “Rust and Bone” and “Royal Affair.”

One of the organization’s highlights is the annual student film festival, which is accepting entries until June.

As the society’s 25th anniversary approaches, Venezia reflects on how far the group she founded has come.

What made you want to start a film society in the suburbs?

I’ve always loved foreign and art films. In the 1980s, I used to drive down to the Music Box (in Chicago) every Friday or Saturday. I’d be fighting traffic, paying for parking, and it became an allday excursion. I kept thinking, ‘I can’t be the only one that wants to do this.’ I called my brother one night, and told him about a small Hinsdale theater that showed foreign films occasionally, and asked if he thought the owners would think I was crazy to volunteer to work the movies and sell tickets to save payroll expenses. He said, ‘Why don’t you form a film society?’ I said, ‘What’s that?’ That was the beginning.

Do you pick all the films shown?

I do, but I also take suggestions and recommendations. I read the New York Times, and I watch (to) see what films are opening here or there, and I compile a list.

I do rely heavily on word of mouth and other reviews.

There have been one or two

films I’ve been disappointed with, but the rest is kind of an adventure. I don’t even like to read reviews before I see a film — too much of the plot is revealed and it ruins the experience. You don’t know what will happen an hour from now in your own life, and that’s how I like to look at films.

“They are notorious for their 1-3-1 press and if they start turning you over and their crowd gets into it and they feed off that, you run into trouble. I’ve experienced that too.”

Lemont put itself in this position with a 61-47 victory Friday over Reavis, which came into the contest tied for first in the other division of the SSC. Marty Einikis had 16 points and six rebounds, Juozas Balciunas tallied 12 points and six assists and Mike Wisz produced 11 points, seven steals and five rebounds.

By SCOTT SCHMID sschmid@shawmedia.com LEMONT — Coming off a 25-3 campaign a year ago, Lemont has been just as good this season, compiling a mark of 23-2 heading into Friday’s regular season finale against Hillcrest, a game that will decide the South Suburban Blue title.

But in moving to Class 4A for the first time this postseason, the Indians were given the No. 9 seed at the challenging Bolingbrook sectional.

“We understand in getting bumped Lemont’s up to 4A, and us beplayoffs ing the only team (from our conferClass: 4A ence) over there, we Sectional seed: No. 9 didn’t get the supRegional: Batavia port from the other Regional opener: 7:30 teams that we would p.m. Tuesday vs. No. 8 have from teams in Bolingbrook our conference,” said Lemont coach Rick Runaas. “In the sectional, there are a lot of teams from two or three conferences and they support each other and we understand that.

“We are the fourth or fifth smallest Class 4A school. With the team we have, in 3A, we might have had a good chance to make a run. We will take our best shot at this one too.”

As a result of receiving a lower seed, Lemont’s road will be extremely tough to navigate, starting off with a first-round matchup at the Batavia regional against No. 8 Bolingbrook and its SMU-recruit Ben Moore. The winner likely will face No. 1 Oswego in the regional final.

“It is extremely difficult,” the coach said. “As good of a season as we have had, we start off with Bolingbrook and we will have to play extremely well or we will be done right away. It’s a shame, I know we are pretty good and I know they are pretty good and one of us will be done after the first round.

“And I feel bad for Oswego, they will have to beat a very good team to be the regional champion.”

Runaas does believe that some of his team’s recent games are good preparation for the postseason.

“TF North was a good game for us,” he said, “and Hillcrest will be a great game for us in terms of seeing that kind of size and athleticism.”

Lemont boasts four players who average double-figure scoring, led by 20.3 points per game from Juozas Balciunas.

Mike Wisz (14.3), Marty Einikis (11.8) and Joe Hehir (11.1) also have been major contributors.

“He put together one of the best seasons we’ve had,” St. Clair said. “His 44 wins tied him for second most wins in a season. Right there, that tells you how well he wrestled all year long.

The next step in his athletic career is undetermined at this time. The one thing Giatras did know is that he was going to enjoy taking naps this week.

“I haven’t gone home after school in I don’t know how long,” said Giatras, who also was the star running back for Lemont’s state semifinalist football team. “I don’t know what it is like coming home at 3 p.m. on a weekday. I don’t know what the sun looks like from my house.”

Season ends at sectionals for Lemont swimming SUBURBAN LIFE MEDIA LOCKPORT — Competing at the Lockport sectional on Saturday, the Lemont boys swimming team scored 68 points to finish in sixth place.

Unfortunately for the Indians, they

were unable to qualify anyone for this weekend’s state meet.

The top performance was put forth by the 200-yard freestyle relay team of Joseph Ziebell, Jake Rangel, Justin Stanwyck and Connor Ganzer, which placed fifth in 1:36.62.

Individually, Brent Husa was ninth

in the 100 butterfly, with a time of 58.15 seconds, while Michael Diorio came in ninth in the 500 free after touching the wall in 5:18.03.

Also contributing were Ganzer (10th in the 200 free, 13th in the 50 free), Stanwyck (10th in the 200 IM and 100 free), Diorio (11th in the 200 IM), Husa

(11th in the 500 free), Ziebell (12th in the 100 breaststroke) and Andrew Wood (13th in the 100 backstroke).

The 400 free relay quartet of Rangel, Stanwyck, Ziebell and Ganzer was sixth in 3:35.81. The 200 medley relay team of Wood, Ziebell, Husa and Diorio was ninth in 1:55.52.

CHAMPAIGN — Chris Giatras accomplished the goal of winning his final high school wrestling match.

It just wasn’t the one the Lemont senior ultimately wanted.

Focused all winter on bringing home a state title, Giatras settled for third place in the Class 2A 182-pound weight class at the IHSA individual state tournament last weekend in Champaign.

“I am happy with third place no doubt,” Giatras said, “and I’m very happy that my hard work paid off. It’s just not how I wanted it to end. I messed up, there is no other way to put it.”

That mess-up Giatras is referring to occurred in his opening match downstate Feb. 14 when he lost for only the second time all season, dropping an 8-4 decision to Colin Carr of Washington.

“I’d say I had a bad match and he had a good match,” the senior

said. “It was not my day; literally it was not my day, that was the only match I had that day.”

Receiving a second life when Carr went on to win his secondround match, Giatras made the best of his newfound opportunity, winning four matches in the wrestlebacks. He notched a first-period pin on Friday then backed that up with a pin on Saturday, followed by a 3-2 decision over Javier Montalvo of LincolnWay West and a 7-4 victory over Nik Countryman of Morris in the third-place match.

“A lot of people asked me how did I bounce back,” Giatras said. “It was natural, you never give up, no way. My goal was to still win my last match.

That was my ultimate goal, just not the match I wanted to end up with.”

Lemont wrestling coach John St. Clair was extremely proud of his senior wrestler.

“Any time you make it downstate and come away with a medal, it’s awesome,” he said.
