No threat found from suspicious package Post office evacuated, but authorities found only weights in package

nweskerna@shawmedia.com BATAVIA – The Batavia Post Office was evacuated early Thursday morning after a scare from a suspicious package, which resulted in bomb squads being called to the scene.

Beverly Howard, customer relations coordinator for the post office’s central Illinois district, said postal workers grew suspicious when they heard a ticking sound coming from a package that had been dropped off in an automated parcel unit in the post office’s lobby.

She said the Postal Inspection Service was called to the scene, and local authorities, including bomb squads, were called a short time after. The incident turned out to be a false alarm, and no one was injured. Howard said authorities opened one of the packages, which contained weights.

The Kane County Sheriff’s Bomb and Arson Investigation Unit and Kane County Sheriff Bomb Squad vehicles were parked in front of the Batavia Post Office to investigate a suspicious package early Thursday morning. appeared to drive their cars to a plaza across the street from the post office, where Eul said they waited for about an hour before returning to the post of-

fice parking lot.

“It was kind of the startup time for the day,” he said.

“There may have been a handful of people in the building.”

Eul said around 5:30 a.m., police temporarily closed down the east side of Mill Street near the side entrance of the post office building, which is at 500

N. Randall Road in Batavia. He said the road re-opened shortly before 8 a.m.

“There were no injuries, no charges, no cause for concern, no threat,” Eul said.

Howard said authorities isolated the package in question and said dogs were called to sniff for bombs. She said authorities looked at all the parcels in the bin to be safe and tried to contact the person who had sent the package.

Incidents of suspicious packages don’t happen too often, Howard said. Leaking packages and powders are among the most common types of suspicious packages postal employees come across, she added.

“Since anthrax, we’re very concerned,” she said. “Any time we get suspicious parcels, we do call authorities.”

The start time for the 5K is 8 a.m., with the noncompetitive walk starting immediately after at 8:05 a.m. Advance registration is encouraged. Funds raised through this event will support Batavia Schools and other educational opportunities for local families.

ART AND EDUCATION Schools extoll virtues of teaching the arts

ATAVIA – As a student at J.B. Nelson Elementary School in Batavia, Brian Schulze loved to draw.

Schulze, now in his sixth year as an art teacher at Louise White Elementary School in Batavia, tries to instill an appreciation for the arts in his own students.

“I don’t think you get a full well-rounded education without including the arts,” he said. “I try to let them get their feet wet. I try to expose them to as many art materials and processes as I can.”

Educators throughout central Kane County stress the need for art to be a part of a student’s life. They said it instills creativity in them along with motivating them.

St. Charles East High School art teacher Gregory Chapman said the arts have been strongly emphasized since he started at the school in 1993.

“It’s important,” Chapman said. “A lot of other countries are looking to us for creativity. I encourage my students to think creatively and outside of the box, and to be able to problem solve.”

Illinois requires public high school students to take one year of art, music, foreign language or vocational education in order to graduate. During the 2011-12 academic year, there were 3,056 art teachers in Illinois public schools, according to data on the Illinois State Board of Education’s website. There were 867 public school districts in Illinois in fiscal year 2012, according to ISBE. St. Charles East High School sophomore Sydney Albrecht, 16, of West Chicago said she is applying what she learned in her art classes to her theater work. She made sets for the school’s recent production of “A Midsummer Night’s Dream.”

“When you are designing sets, you have to draw them out first,” she said. “The stage is a large-scale canvas for you to do whatever you want to do.”

“Super shy kids become confident,” he said. “Art teaches them how to express themselves.”

Chapman would like to see the school hire another art teacher. The school now has four full-time art teachers and one part-time teacher, he said.

“We would be able to have more classes, and the teachers would be able to specialize in their areas,” Chapman said.

Patty O’Neil, Geneva School District’s assistant superintendent for curriculum and instruction, said the district knows the importance of arts in education.

“So much of what students learn in the arts translates to other areas,” she said.

Kaneland School District spotlights the arts through its annual Kaneland Community Fine Arts Festival, which will be April 21 at the Kaneland High School campus. The festival, which

Sauceda hire prompts review of county hiring policies

By JONATHAN BILYK jbilyk@shawmedia.com GENEVA – The Kane County Board has launched a re-evaluation of the county’s hiring policies at some county government departments following the hiring of a political ally of Kane County Board Chairman Chris Lauzen as a temporary billing manager at the county’s Animal Control Department.

And the review was bolstered further by a belief among county officials that the county may have not abided by its own rules when making the hire.

Wednesday, the County Board’s Human Services Committee, which oversees the county’s human resources department, among other aspects of county business, discussed the county’s hiring freeze.

That freeze was implemented in 2008 in response to the onset of the Great Recession, and the associated economic problems that still plague the county. However, the hiring freeze, which was encoded in county ordinance, allowed for several exceptions, including the ability of department

heads to hire to fill vacancies in positions for which funding is provided in county budgets and for hiring in emergency situations.

The ordinance also does not expressly require county department heads to receive explicit approval Robert from the County Sauceda Board to hire temporary, seasonal or parttime workers.

That issue came to a head in recent weeks after the county’s animal control department hired Robert Sauceda as billing manager. The temporary hire of Sauceda was made in January by Barb Jeffers, executive director of the Kane County Health Department.

Jeffers earlier this month was appointed to her current position by Lauzen after months as interim director.

County Board members have questioned Sauceda’s employment, and asked whether the county needed to clarify its policy on seasonal and parttime employees. Committee members sought to address

the “ambiguity” of the hiring freeze ordinance that could have allowed hires, like that of Sauceda, to have occurred without County Board oversight.

“We asked who and what should be coming before us,” said County Board member Cristina Castro, D-Elgin, chairman of the Human Services committee.

During the discussion, Castro and County Board member Mark Davoust, R-St. Charles, who serves as vice chairman of the committee, said a representative of the Kane County State’s Attorney’s Office told the committee that he believes temporary, seasonal and parttime hires are subject to review under the county’s hiring freeze rules.

Thursday, Kane County State’s Attorney Joe McMahon issued a statement that the office has “expressed no formal or informal opinion about any specific employee, potential employee, independent contractor, or potential independent contractor” hired by the county.

Batavia aldermen Monday approved changes to the sculpture, which will be installed in summer. The sculpture, a nod to Batavia’s history, is titled “A Look Back,” and is being made by Oscar Leon and Jessica LoPresti of Highwood.

Originally, the sculpture showed three windmills and an American Indian with a particular headdress and haircut. After the city awarded the artists a $30,000 commission, they traveled to Wisconsin to meet with a representative of the Potawatomi Indians to make sure the piece would be as authentic as possible, Batavia City Administrator Bill

McGrath told aldermen.

One of the changes is that the American Indian will be installed looking to the east.

“This is an important element to the Potawatomi because they are considered ‘keepers of the fire,’ ” McGrath said in a memo to aldermen.

“The artists were told that the fire keeper always should be facing east.”

Other changes are that the sculpture will have only one windmill. McGrath said staff approved the changes.

“If it can be simplified, then certainly one windmill is all that is necessary to represent the importance of it in our history,” McGrath said. “The fewer the moving pieces, the better, and the more bronze the better, as well, in terms of maintenance.”

Batavia once was known as the windmill capital of the

world for being home to six windmill factories. Concepts of the sculpture can be seen on the city’s website, www.cityofbatavia.net.

The city also is asking artists to submit ideas for the last two sculptures on the Wilson Street Bridge.

He noted that the state’s attorney’s office indicated that the county has not broken any laws and is not obligated to fire anyone, or to review past hires. Nor, he said, is there a desire to do so.

“Once you separate the political and personal aspect of this, it becomes a fairly routine discussion,” Davoust said.

“Everybody needs to be on the

same page, and playing by the same rules.”

Lauzen on Wednesday continued to defend the hiring of Sauceda, saying it will help the county collect tens of thousands of dollars in unpaid fees owed to animal control, and help to make animal control self-sufficient.

Lauzen said in his first three weeks on the job, Sauceda has helped collect $34,000 for animal control.

The County Board could again take up the discussion of its hiring policies at later meetings, perhaps at the Finance and Budget Committee meeting on Feb. 27.

The Downtown St. Charles Partnership has extended the parade entry deadline to Thursday because of increasing interest. Submissions originally were due this week.

With this being the partnership’s first year organizing the annual parade, Executive Director Lynne Schwartz said it wanted to ensure that interested parties had the updated information.

“We certainly don’t want to leave anyone out,” she said, noting people have continued to call about the event.

The parade, which marches down Main Street from Sixth Street to Fourth Avenue, is set to begin 2 p.m. March 16.

Participants may include businesses, politicians and nonprofit organizations.

The fee is $250 for businesses and political entries and $125 for partnership business members.

There is no charge for nonprofit entries.

Judge dismisses District 304 eavesdropping suit against former employee

By BRENDA SCHORY bschory@shawmedia.com GENEVA – The Geneva School District’s eavesdropping lawsuit against a former employee was dismissed, court records show.

Kane County Circuit Court Judge David Akemann issued a written ruling Tuesday dismissing the lawsuit with prejudice, which means the district cannot file another case on the same claim.

The district and two officials sued Margaret Pennington in March 31, 2011, for taping meetings in October and November 2009 despite being told not to, causing an atmosphere of “distrust and fear” at the administrative center.

Illinois law requires all parties to approve being re-

corded at a gathering or meetings, but public meetings are exempt, though several court challenges have found the law to be unconstitutional.

Akemann ruled that Illinois’ eavesdropping statute is unconstitutional and violates the due process provisions of the 14th Amendment, among other issues, making the school district’s claims against Pennington invalid.

“The eavesdropping statute, on its face, violates the protections of substantive due process by failing to include an element of criminal intent which necessarily means that it criminalized wholly innocent conduct,” Akemann’s ruling states. “Accordingly, the eavesdropping statute may not support a claim against the defendant in this case and

defendant’s motion to dismiss the complaint with prejudice is granted.”

According to Akemann’s ruling, the purpose of the state’s eavesdropping statute is to protect conversational privacy of citizens, “but the statute makes no requirement that there be a reasonable expectation of privacy in the conversations at issue in order for a violation of the statute to occur.”

The school district’s attorney, James Petrungaro, said he had not seen the ruling and would not comment.

Pennington, 53, of Geneva, did not return a voicemail message seeking comment.

Her attorney did not respond to a message seeking comment.

At the time the district sued Pennington, she was co-

ordinator of special projects and resource procurement during the 2009-10 school year.

The lawsuit sought more than $100,000 in damages from Pennington for Assistant Superintendents Dawn George and Patricia O’Neil, as well as for the district.

At the time, George was in charge of student servic-

es. George since has retired.

O’Neil was and still is the district’s assistant superintendent for curriculum and instruction.

Pennington was principal at Heartland Elementary School for the 2008-09 school year before she was assigned as coordinator of special projects at the district’s central office.

NORTH AURORA – Beginning in early March, residents will start seeing some new squad cars with a completely redesigned paint and decal scheme.

The department at that time will start driving Chevrolet Caprice squad cars. North Aurora police officers had driven Ford Police Interceptors (formerly called Crown Victorias) since the late 1990s, but since the Interceptors were discontinued, the department was forced to choose a new model, according to a news release from the North Aurora Police Department.

North Aurora Police Chief David Summer established a committee to redesign the look of the squad cars. Several officers volunteered and ultimately came up with the new black and white design, the news release stated.

Summer said he favored the new design because of its traditional appeal.

“Much like fire trucks are red, black and white squad cars are a symbol of the police,” Summer said in the release. “I want people to identify us as the police, without any doubt.”

This letter will serve to set the record straight regarding allegations wielded against my family and me from our newly elected County Board chairman, Chris Lauzen, and his associates (Feb. 9, Kane County Chronicle). Mr. Lauzen is using these allegations as an attempt to draw your attention away from the real issues affecting this County Board. Never, at any time, has my family, or myself, attempted to gain influence from my position on the Kane County Board.

In 1996, the executive director of the Kane County Forest Preserve District approached the Kenyon family about a parcel of land we owned near South Elgin. The mature oak trees, wet lands and open field would be preserved for generations, if owned by the forest preserve. It was under these conditions that the Kenyon family agreed to sell the land. Then, as the student population of District U-46 outgrew the high schools in the area, the school district looked for land near South Elgin. The parcel that the school district was interested in was large enough, and the Kenyon family was approached by the school board.

We were willing to sell that land so that South Elgin children could have their own school. Construction began in 2001. Once started, the district realized that it would need access for sewer and water. The Kenyon family was approached once again for the easement. The easement was freely given to U-46 at no cost. With the new high school and added traffic, a stoplight at Route 25 was needed and the state made it happen. Additional road widening was needed, and again the Kenyon family was asked to cooperate. We did so willingly. A developer bought the land for the state, based upon their previous sale.

At the end of 2012, the Kane County Highway Department asked for a construction easement on Plank Road in Burlington Township. The Kenyon family accepted the Kane County Highway Department’s offer of $300 for the easement. As a County Board member, I abstained from voting on the issue, and the easement sale was unanimously approved by the rest of the Kane County Board members. If the money from that transaction was divided, my personal share would have been $90, less expenses. In every instance mentioned above, the Kenyon family was approached to sell, and cooperated, with the government.

My experience as a board member has taught me the value of cooperation and civility. Upon his installation as County Board chairman, Mr. Lauzen asked the County Board to focus on four things, one of which was treating each other respectfully.

Unfortunately, the chairman has not heeded his own advice. We have a county chairman who believes in personally attacking County Board members, which detracts from the real issue. At the time, the issue in question was whether a certain person should be hired, based on his/her personal associations with the chairman.

Character assassinations should never become a substitute for discussing any issue, based on its merits. As leaders, we cannot allow this type of behavior to continue.

And as a board, we should not allow anyone to drag us down that terrible road.

Don’t snuff out this policy THE WASHINGTON POST When venerable antitobacco groups such as the American Cancer Society and cigarette makers such as Altria align in opposition to a policy, it’s got to be pretty bad, right? But, when it comes to whether health-insurance companies can charge higher premiums from smokers, the fact that these mortal enemies oppose the idea doesn’t mean policymakers should throw it out.

When President Obama’s 2010 healthcare law kicks in next year, there will be only a few things for which insurance companies can charge you more – your age, your location and whether you smoke.

of nonsmokers. You’d think that anti-tobacco activists would cheer. In fact, The Post’s Sarah Kliff reports, they have aligned with tobacco companies who want to eliminate the provision. Smokers are disproportionately low-income, and publichealth groups worry that their premiums would be so expensive that many would choose not to buy insurance. That means a high-risk population would forgo needed disease screening and treatment, not to mention access to smokingcessation coverage. The Institute for Health Policy Solutions calculates that a married couple of older, low-income smokers could face premiums that equal as much as 48 percent of their total income.

Yet, as the institute’s

study also notes, there also are good reasons to charge smokers more. Their behavior makes them prone to serious illnesses that are expensive to treat.

If they don’t pay for their smoking-related medical care, nonsmokers would have to finance a big chunk of the cost for that treatment. It’s also possible, though not proven, that higher insurance premiums would encourage smokers to quit.

These reasons alone wouldn’t justify pricing a cohort of low-income Americans out of the health-insurance market.

But policymakers don’t need to eliminate the rules entirely – only refine them. Between now and next year, that can happen at the state or federal level, and it should probably occur at both.

Jimenez piling up state crowns

armion junior Johnny Jimenez wrestles yearround, which often leaves little time for celebration.

The shelf life for saluting Jimenez’s latest feat proved shorter than most, as he and the Cadets quickly turned their focus from last weekend’s 3A individual state tournament in Champaign to the upcoming team dual state tournament in Bloomington.

History – and Jimenez’s medal – will show the 120pounder from St. Charles captured his third individual title in as many tries this winter. That the Kane County Chronicle Wrestler of the Year would rather share the spoils with teammates leaves little doubt.

“We got that little break Saturday night, but then Sunday we came back and it was time to get after it again,” Jimenez said. “We’re wrestling for our teammates and not just ourselves like we do in the individual state series. Everyone on the team, even the JV guys that aren’t starting, we’re wrestling for each other.

That’s the mindset we have right now.”

That was the case in the mat room for much of the season, especially among the Cadets’ cadre of lower weight standouts. Senior state champion George Fisher (132) and fourth-place finisher Anthony Bosco (106) grew up tangling with Jimenez at the St. Charles North Youth Wrestling Club, along with other Marmion teammates.

Walking around the Assembly Hall concourse shortly after his third-place bout, Bosco, a junior, was eager to aid Jimenez and Fisher with any last-minute sparring for that night’s finals if they so chose.

“I’m always there to help a teammate out, especially guys I’ve been growing up with,” Bosco said. “They

helped me accomplish [my] goals, so if they need me, I’ll be there.”

Jimenez is quick to credit practice partners for his success, but he can’t escape the fact that credit for his 111-7 record over three seasons lies at least in part on his shoulders.

Fully recovered from an appendectomy that limited him to 24 matches as a sophomore, Jimenez – who celebrated his birthday Thursday – was 48-2 entering the team dual state series. He’s a creature of habit

where his conditioning and weightlifting regimens are concerned, and he continually tests himself against top statewide foes at the Naperville-based Overtime School of Wrestling each offseason.

Sandburg senior Sebastian Pique, who Jimenez defeated, 3-0, for the state championship a week after winning in a sectional semifinal, is a longtime practice partner. Jimenez and Pique also are familiar with unbeaten 1A champion Josh Alber of Dakota, who handed Jimenez the first

loss of his career against Illinois competition with a 3-2 victory in this season’s Dvorak tournament.

“We all go back and forth, you know,” Pique said.

“We’re the top three in the state, for sure, no doubt about it. And definitely in the country, [we’re] up there.”

Jimenez is eager to jostle for position in that group as a senior, as Alber aims to complete a perfect run through his high school career.

“He’s my friend. I’m really happy for him,” Jimenez said. “I’m looking forward to wrestling him next year, too.”

Midway through the individual state tournament, Jimenez said the annual trek to Champaign wasn’t even the toughest weekend the Cadets faced amid a traditionally daunting schedule that includes its share of national tournaments.

Jimenez got a jump on the challenge in July, when he earned All-American status by placing third at 120 at the prestigious GrecoRoman Junior Nationals in Fargo, N.D. Already well-versed in Marmion’s budding tradition as a former assistant at Providence, first-year Cadets coach Ryan Cumbee knew Jimenez was among the jewels he was inheriting when he took over the program.

“He’s an extremely hard-working kid,” Cumbee said, “and he doesn’t take a second for granted.”

Jimenez does allow some time to commemorate his accomplishments. It’s neither gloating nor basking, but simple, proud moments of self-awareness.

“It feels amazing knowing that all your hard work this whole year, all the sacrifices, pay off for this,” he said. “So I’m really happy with everything, and I feel great.”

That’s because what he’s doing is working. Now it’s time to keep going.

A former Providence assistant, Cumbee ably replaced Dean Branstetter, who had been the only coach in Marmion history while building the program into a state power in less than a decade.

One season after the Cadets produced four state place-winners – including two champions – in Class 2A, Cumbee presided over the same result when the team shifted to 3A, the state’s largest class. Guiding a lineup that starts seven freshmen, he also helped the Cadets to the program’s first berth in the dual team state tournament. Marmion faces Minooka in a quarterfinal at 11 a.m. Saturday. “When we bumped up to 3A, everybody was wondering if we could handle that jump in class. And I think that the only people who were happy about that was our own team,� Cumbee said. “We knew that we belonged with the big schools. We knew that we could compete with them, and we want to be respected as one of the best in 3A. STC North boys basketball defeated by Metea Valley KANE COUNTY CHRONICLE AURORA – The St. Charles North boys basketball team committed three turnovers in the final minute of the first half Thursday, helping ignite a key run for Metea Valley in a 62-53 loss in an Upstate Eight Conference crossover.

North (16-10) was tied at 36-all with the Mustangs before the surge. “We got off to a very good start and had a letdown right before the half,� North Stars coach Tom Poulin said. “The kids played really hard. The effort was there. There just were a few too many mental mistakes, and Metea is too good to do that against.�

‘We want to win a regional title’

By JAY SCHWAB jschwab@shawmedia.com From lightly attended games against obscure, smalltown opponents to a sold-out showdown at Hinckley-Big Rock to the bright lights of TV cameras at news conferences about an eligibility controversy, the Mooseheart boys basketball team has seen a little bit of everything this winter.

Mooseheart coach Ron Ahrens hopes the same take-it-asit-comes, poised approach that high-profile South Sudanese transfer students Akim Nyang, Makur Puou and Mangisto Deng and their teammates have adopted so far will serve them well again in tonight’s IHSA Class 1A Westminster Christian Regional championship game against those same Hinckley-Big Rock Royals.

The game was moved from Westminster Christian to the larger Judson University

gymnasium to accommodate what is expected to be a robust crowd.

Mooseheart won a district title in 1964 but has never won what is now called a regional championship.

“I don’t know, culturally, if they understand what we’re into,” Mooseheart coach Ron Ahrens said. “I tell them, you know what, 100 years we’ve been at Mooseheart, we want to win a regional title. I don’t know if they necessarily understand. They’re just going to go out and play basketball.

“Their goal is, let’s go out and play basketball. I don’t know if they’ll get all worried.”

Second-seeded Mooseheart (23-5) and top-seeded H-BR (24-4) are both enjoying banner seasons, with some intertwined history.

H-BR reached out to the IHSA to question the agency that placed Nyang, Puou and

Deng at Mooseheart, and the IHSA temporarily stripped the trio’s eligibility before the IHSA Board of Directors voted to overturn the decision and allow the boys – ranging in height from 6-foot-7 to 7-foot-1 – to compete. That happened in mid-December, less than a week after the Royals closed the game on a 13-0 run to rally past Mooseheart, 58-51, in a sold-out game in Hinckley.

Despite Mooseheart’s massive size advantage, Ahrens knows playing a well-schooled, veteran team that can shoot will be a huge challenge.

“They’re the best in our area,” Ahrens said after Mooseheart’s 45-30 win against Westminster Christian in Wednesday’s semifinal. “I just

counted it up tonight, they have 11 seniors, I thought it was nine. They play good team basketball together, they play hard and, you know what, they’re probably going to come out with kind of the same game plan – double Makur, they’ll man up Mangisto, and we’ve just got to get our kids moving a little more so we can be more effective offensively.”

While Mooseheart’s frontcourt is formidable at both ends of the floor, the backcourt remains a question mark. The Ramblers lost starting guard Oumaru Abdualahi to injury early in the season, and another starting guard, defensive specialist Kevin Gbadebo, injured his rotator cuff in the Ramblers’ final regular season game against Chicago Hope. Gbadebo has not played in the team’s first two postseason games and is “kind of day-to-day right now,” Ahrens said.

“I knew that this was a big game, and if I was going to put myself out there, now would be the time to do it,” Holt said.

Rockford Lutheran, including a school record-tying six 3s.

BC’s ball-pressure defense and the Golden Warriors’ turnovers limited Kester to one attempt from long range before the break. Sterling swished each of its five field goal attempts in the first quarter and went 6 for 11 in the first half overall, but Central’s pressure ultimately mounted.

“They started strong and took us out of what we were

used to,” said Golden Warriors guard Raquel Romano. “We knew it was coming and just couldn’t catch up.”

Kiarra Harris and Alexis Strong scored seven points apiece for Sterling.

Central’s overflow, whiteclad student section, which startled its Sterling counterparts when it bellowed “ROCKETS!” during that part of the national anthem, confidently chanted “I believe that we will win!” with 1:12 to go in the first quarter. BC led by 10 points at the time, and later went ahead by as many as 30.

“We came out big the first quarter, kept going along the way and came out big again,” Ross said. “And we won.”

Then promptly sidestepped the charging student section. If they were fast enough.

St. Charles East struggles against Waubonsie duo

By JAY SCHWAB jschwab@shawmedia.com AURORA – Bryan Jefferson was a big problem for the St. Charles East boys basketball team. Jared Brownridge was a huge one.

The Waubonsie Valley tandem combined for 57 points Thursday, coming within a point of equaling the entire East team in the Warriors’ 66-58, Upstate Eight Conference crossover victory.

East caps the regular season with a 15-11 record. The Saints open postseason play in a 4A South Elgin Regional semifinal Tuesday against the winner of Monday’s game between the host Storm and St. Charles North.

Thursday’s game as a dress rehearsal for the postseason but the game showed a 1-2 punch like Brownridge and Jefferson can close the curtains on a team in a hurry.

“You can’t really key on one of them because once you start doing that, they’ll just find the other one,” East forward David Mason said. “You just try and contain them. There’s only so much you can do with people like that if you let them get off.”

The Santa Clara-bound Brownridge (35 points, 21 in the second half) dealt the Saints a series of demoralizing blows.

East tied the game, 40-all, when a driving Dom Adduci set up forward A.J. Washington for a layup with 2:15 left in the third quarter. But after a Waubonsie timeout, Brownridge canned

3-pointers on consecutive possessions to put the Warriors back ahead, 46-40.

The Saints later closed in on the Warriors (20-7) in the fourth, drawing within 54-52 on a successful lob from guard Cole Gentry to Washington. But again, Brownridge stomped on East’s momentum, this time with a 10-footer that started a 5-0 Warriors burst.

Adduci led East with 22 points but lost his balance on a drive in the final minute and landed hard on his right shoulder. He left the game and watching the final moments with his shoulder wrapped, but East coach Pat Woods said Adduci should be OK. “That’s been kind of a thing that’s happened a couple times this year,” Woods said. “He’ll be

ready to go come playoff time.

He probably wanted to go back in right there.”

The teams were tied, 17-all, after a first quarter in which Adduci went three-for-three from 3-point land, but the Warriors surged to a 35-29 lead by halftime.

Jefferson, a 6-foot-7 senior, snared 11 rebounds to go with his 22 points.

Gentry scored 10 points for the Saints. The sophomore point guard was one of two Saints starters to take a seat to start the second half as East went to the biggest lineup it could realistically field in an attempt to disrupt the Warriors with a rangy, 1-3-1 zone defense.

The move paid dividends in the early stages of the half before Waubonsie adjusted.

“It was definitely tough – I went out there, I saw big guys everywhere,” said Brownridge, an undersized but dynamic 2-guard. “It was hard to do at first, but once we got into a timeout, we drew up a play. Bryan drives to the middle, and I cut up to the top of the key, and I had two 3s in a row. And then after that they came with me, so that left Bryan open for the drives, and that worked out for us.”

Pottawatomie Garden Club celebrates 85 years KANE COUNTY CHRONICLE neighbors@kcchronicle.com The Pottawatomie Garden Club is celebrating 85 years in 2013.

In 1928, when the first bylaws were written by the Junior Garden Club of St. Charles the object was to “cultivate the spirit of gardening in its broadest sense – to beautify home grounds and to encourage community gardening.”

The organization that began in 1928 as the Junior Garden Club of St. Charles – used to cultivate the spirit of gardening, beautify home grounds and encourage community gardening, according to a news release – evolved into the Pottawatomie Garden Club in 1930.

Now – 85 years later – the objective remains the same with the addition of a commitment to education, according to the release.

During the club’s anniversary year, there will be programs scheduled beginning with the first of the season, which will take place Monday, Feb. 25. The program will feature the presentation

“Step into Spring with Tulips.”

“I’m so excited to be president in the club’s 85th year,” said Karen Masus in the release.

Masus along with incoming vice president Lanny Salvati, secretary Diane Winkler and treasurer Louise Cruse, will call to order the fist meeting of the Pottawatomie Garden Club’s 2013 season.

Members will be busy in the spring and fall planting flowers at various locations throughout St. Charles, including planters on Main and Illinois streets, the Municipal Center, the public library and the Tri-City Health Partnership.

Recently, the Pottawatomie Garden Club teamed up with the Geneva Garden Club to install and maintain plantings at the Living Well Cancer Center and the new CASA Grow a Healthy Child Garden – both in Geneva.

Meetings are held in the lower level of PNC Bank, 2600 E. Main St., St. Charles. The meet-and-greet will begin at 11:30 a.m. with a business meeting and presentation to follow.

Few take notice of three-row Mazda CX-9 Mazda’s CX-9 is awaiting discovery.

Overlooked, it is what a family vehicle should be.

It has three rows to seat seven. Properly equipped, it has sufficient strength to tow a 3,500-pound trailer. This sport utility vehicle, which operates like a wagon, also has a maximum cargo capacity of 101 cubic feet. That is an astounding figure as 70, 80, even 90 cubic feet are the rule in this midsize wagon/SUV market.

Leg room in all three rows is ample, officially measuring in the 40- to 41-inch range. Headroom suffers a bit in the third row, but access to it should please those who sit there.

From either side, the split second row seats fold and move forward to provide easy entry to that third row. When seats in the three rows are upright, there remains 17.2 cubic feet of storage space.

The rear doors are as large as the front doors which means bulky or thin persons alike can easily climb into this vehicle.

If moving objects from one place to another is on the agenda, the liftgate opens to an eventual padded flat floor. The two rear rows fold absolutely flat for a smooth load surface.

The CX-9 comes in three trim levels, Sport, Touring and Grand Touring. Prices start at $29,785, $32, 230 and $34,785 respectively. Delivery is $795.

Replacing front- with all-wheeldrive will cost $1,600.

The three share the same 3.7-liter, 273-horsepower, double overhead cam V6 engine, the same shiftable six-speed automatic transmission, and, of course, the same doors, rows and storage capacities.

In for a week of test driving was an AWD 2013 Grand Touring model with most but not all the bells and whistles expected in a midsize vehicle built for the mass, and not the luxury market. It had power heated front seats (memory for driver),

REVIEWS Jerry Kuyper power heated exterior mirrors, plus power door locks, remote entry and keyless ignition. The power moonroof cost extra and was in a $2,435 GT Tech options package that also included a color touch-screen navigation system, satellite radio and an upgrade Bose sound system with 11 instead of six speakers.

Also standard on a Grand Touring model are a power liftgate, fog lights in front, bixenon headlamps, rain-sensing windshield wipers, a selfdimming rear view mirror and leather cabin trim, including all seat surfaces.

During mostly interstate driving with one adult and

100 pounds of cargo aboard, the tested CX-9 averaged 23.8 miles per gallon of unleaded gasoline. That beat the estimate of the Environmental Protection Agency’s 22 mpg for highway driving. Unnecessary accelerations were nil and the 4,552-pound vehicle was driven in a modest fashion.

The EPA gives the AWD CX-9 a rating of 16 mpg city and an 18 mpg in combined cityhighway driving. EPA figures for a front-wheel-drive CX-9 are slightly better. There is a 20-gallon tank on board.

Acceleration is even and not jerky. If in a hurry, the CX-9 can go from 0 to 60 miles per hour in 7.7 to 8.5 seconds. The slower time is an AWD CX-9.

Vented disc brakes measure 12.6 inches in front and 12.8 inches in the rear. They are a big reason why this vehicle

can come to a stop from 60 mph in less than 125 feet.

Safety fare includes traction and stability controls, antilock brakes, airbags in front (including sides) and overhead for three rows.

The Grand Touring model also had a rearview camera, rear park sensors and a blind spot monitoring system.

Anchors and tethers for child seats are provided in the two rear rows.

Insulation factors were good as little road or engine noise invaded the cabin. The ride was fine with no harsh bumps or erratic rocking behavior on less than perfect roads. The suspension system relies on struts in front and multilinks in the rear. Gas shocks, coil springs and stabilizer bars front and rear are nothing out of the ordinary.

Standard on the Grand Touring are P245 20-inch tires mounted on aluminum alloy wheels.

Amenities include climate controls for the three rows, air conditioning, cruise control, Bluetooth, compact disc and MP3 players, auxiliary and USB audio input, AM-FM radio with presets for satellite radio as well, grab handles, multiple beverage holders and storage bins.

Much of the interest in this three-row, midsize SUV/wagon segment goes to the Ford Flex and Chevrolet Traverse, which are worthy vehicles, but potential buyers should add the CX-9 to the shopping list.

Warranty coverage is three years or 36,000 miles with 24hour roadside assistance and five years or 60,000 miles on the powertrain.

Director drama befuddles Oscar predictions When the Academy Awards executives chose to extend the number of best picture nominations beyond five without doing the same with the best director, they created a situation.

Traditionally, the best director directs the best film. So, by pushing the number of nominated films beyond five, the academy created the assumption that the “real” best picture nominations were the ones tied to nominated director.

This year, that assumption went up in flames. Who would have guessed that out of a field of nine, the “orphaned” best picture nominees would be “Django Unchained,” “Les Misérables,” “Zero Dark Thirty” or current front runner “Argo?” Who would have guessed that the sidelined directors would include critical darling Quentin Tarantino, recent winner Kathryn Bigelow and prodigal son Ben Affleck?! Who knows what caused all this chaos in the top two categories. Maybe the Oscar voters weren’t enamored with the films they were expected to nominate, like “Zero Dark Thirty.” Whatever the case, a split between best director and best picture now appears likely. The backlash against the Ben Affleck snub has been embarrassing for the academy.

Here are my predictions for the winners in the major categories, along with those I believe deserve to win: • Best Supporting Actor: This is often the toughest category to call, but never more than this year. Each of the five nominees already has an Oscar. Each of the performances galvanizes its film. I’m seeing it as a narrow three-way race between Philip Seymour Hoffman in “The Master,” Tommy Lee Jones in “Lincoln” and Robert De Niro in “Silver Linings Playbook.” My vote would go to De Niro, whose very human performance as a father who loves his son but struggles to deal with his mental illness is unlike anything he has done in decades.

I doubt, though, this one performance means the academy is yet ready to forgive De Niro for all the garbage he has appeared in during the last 15 years. I predict Jones will win for playing a fiery abolitionist congressman, but De Niro and Hoffman will be fast at his heels.

• Best Supporting Actress: If “Les Misérables” consisted of nothing more than Anne Hathaway singing “I Dreamed a Dream,” it would have been enough to

rEVIEWS Jeffrey Westhoff guarantee her an Oscar victory (it also would have been a much better movie).

Hathaway has this category sewn up, and she deserves to win it. I am happy to see Jacki Weaver nominated for playing Bradley Cooper’s mother in “Silver Linings Playbook.” She gave a wonderful performance as essential as any other to the movie’s success, but I feared it would be overlooked.

• Best Actor: Daniel Day-Lewis as the embodiment of Abraham Lincoln is an even more likely winner than Hathaway, but my vote would go to Denzel Washington as the alcoholic pilot in “Flight” (my choice for the year’s best film). Here was a performance so convincing it was chilling, and one that dared to challenge the audience’s feelings toward the protagonist right down to the last five minutes. However, DayLewis will win, and it is easy to understand why. From now on when people think of Abraham Lincoln, they may still picture a Matthew Brady photo, but they will hear Day-Lewis’ voice.

• Best Actress: It frustrates me that the person who most deserves to win, Naomi Watts in “The Impossible,” stands the least chance. Sure, the other four actresses gave standout performances, but they didn’t have to stay in character while thousands of gallons of water were dumped on them. This is supposed to be a two-actress race, but a pair of wild cards must be addressed first. While it has happened only in the supporting actress category, the Oscars have a history of young actresses scoring upset wins (Tatum O’Neal in “Paper Moon,”

Anna Paquin in “The Piano”). So don’t rule out a win by 9-year-old Quvenzhané Wallis of “Beasts of the Southern Wild.”

The other wild card is more likely to take the statue, though, for the Oscars also have a history of French actresses scoring upsets; that puts 86-year-old Emmanuel Riva of “Amour” in a position to win if the front runners cancel each other out.

Those front runners are Jessica Chastain as the CIA officer obsessed with finding Osama bin Laden in “Zero Dark Thirty” and Jennifer Lawrence as the loveably bipolar sex addict in “Silver Linings Playbook.” This is a tough call. If Oscar voters are in a serious mood, they will pick Chastain. But, as she joked in her Golden Globes acceptance speech, Lawrence has Harvey Weinstein in her corner, and you won’t get rich betting against Harvey Weinstein. I bet against him last year in the same category, and his candidate, Meryl Streep, won in the one year she didn’t deserve to. So, I believe I will put my money on Katniss to win.

• Best Director: Ben Affleck has been gathering best directing trophies from every acronym from BAFTA to the DGA. But he won’t be getting an Oscar Sunday night, because AMPAS didn’t nominate him. That leaves a category without a front runner. I think Steven Spielberg will win because he is Steven Spielberg, and also because “Lincoln” is one of his best films, if perhaps his least Spielbergian. Ang Lee might win for the stunning technical and artistic achievement that is “Life of Pi,” but “Pi” hasn’t been racking up victories elsewhere.

• Best Picture: When the Oscar nominations were announced, I thought “Lincoln” was the sure winner. After all, the snub of Ben Affleck supposedly put “Argo” out of the running. Then “Argo” started winning just about every other award out there, and at this point it looks unbeatable. I think the academy may have inadvertently caused the “Argo” surge by snubbing Affleck.

Had Affleck been nominated, people wouldn’t be crusading to vindicate him with an “Argo” victory and “Lincoln” still might be the front runner. “Argo” also has benefitted from “Zero Dark Thirty’s” torture controversy. Overnight, “Argo” became the “nice” CIA movie. So, “Argo” probably will win, though I wish it wouldn’t.

Hormones from fat cells cause damage to body Dear Doctor K: Why is abdominal fat worse for your health than fat around the hips and thighs?

Dear Reader: When it comes to body fat, location counts. Fat above the waist (the “apple” shape) is much more dangerous than fat in the butt and thighs (the “pear” shape).

In most people, about 90 percent of body fat lies in a layer just beneath the skin. The remaining 10 percent – called visceral fat – lies out of reach, deep within your abdomen. It’s found in the spaces surrounding your liver, intestines and other organs. It’s also stored in a flap of tissue that lies under your stomach muscles.

Visceral fat is a key player in a variety of health problems, including cardiovascular disease, dementia, asthma, and breast and colorectal cancer.

What makes visceral fat so dangerous? Research over the past 20 years has completely changed our understanding of what fat is. We’ve always known that fat is composed of billions of cells called fat cells. We used to think that fat was just a layer of insulation to keep heat inside our bodies during cold weather. We didn’t think that fat, and fat cells,

However, we’ve discovered that fat cells – particularly fat cells inside the abdomen (visceral fat) – are little hormone factories. They are constantly producing substances that get into the blood and travel to other parts of the body, where they can have profound effects.

For example, some of the hormones produced by fat cells affect your appetite, your metabolism, even your blood pressure. Researchers at Harvard have discovered that visceral fat secretes a molecule that increases insulin resistance (raising the risk of Type 2 diabetes). In addition, visceral fat cells make certain proteins that trigger low-level inflammation. This is a risk factor for heart disease.

You can estimate your visceral fat by measuring your waist circumference. (I’ve put an illustration explaining how to do this on my website, AskDoctorK.

com.) Ideally, waist circumference should be less than 35 inches for women and less than 40 inches for men.

To keep visceral fat at bay: • Keep moving. Exercise can help you reduce your waist circumference, lose visceral fat and gain muscle mass. Engage in at least 30 minutes of moderateintensity activity most days.

• Eat right. Choose a balanced diet that helps you achieve and maintain a healthy weight.

Avoid products that encourage belly fat, including trans fats and fructose-sweetened foods and beverages.

• Don’t smoke. The more you smoke, the more likely you are to store fat in your abdomen rather than on your hips and thighs.

• Forget the quick fix. Liposuction doesn’t reach inside the abdominal wall to your visceral fat. You may change your appearance with liposuction, but you won’t improve your health.

Dr. Wallace: I am a faithful reader of your column. I almost always agree with what you say, which is why I’m asking my question.

I would like to know how you overcome shyness. I am very shy and would like to break away from this condition.

I read in one of your letters about how to talk to a shy person, but can you tell me how to talk when you ARE a shy person? I’m upset that I have this problem, and I get told all the time that I should change my ways, but I can’t. I would appreciate any thoughts on how to overcome shyness! – Nameless, Boston, Mass.

Dear Nameless: Shyness stems from a lack of self-esteem.

Shy people feel inferior to others and instinctively avoid personal interaction. They fear failure so much that they clam up rather than risk making a mistake. And once this kind of behavior becomes entrenched, they label themselves as anti-social and expect to be tongue-tied in social situations. Their prison-like isolation becomes “normal.” But shyness can be overcome! It may not disappear overnight, but it can disappear.

To overcome shyness, it is important to take one day at a time. See each day as an opportunity to experiment. Begin with eye contact. In social situations, when you must react to another individual, look the person squarely in the eye.

Most shy people hang their head down or look away, even when they’re talking.

Next, take a deep breath if necessary and relax. Ask the other person questions. Most people enjoy answering them, and it gives you a

Your determination to overcome your shyness is the very first step in doing so. Don’t get discouraged and don’t expect to become glib and perfectly poised in a day, a week or a month. Just keep practicing every day to become more social and gradually you will find self-confidence. Write to me again soon, and let me know your progress.

Dr. Wallace: I’m not a real good athlete, but I try. I went out for the football team, and I went out for the basketball team this year.

But both times, the coaches “cut” me from the squads because of a lack of talent.

How am I ever going to get better if I can’t practice and improve my skills? Do you think coaches should cut (drop) players who lack advanced ability? – Jerry, Evansville, Ind. Dear Jerry: Basketball teams must drop unskilled players mainly because of a limited practice area and the fact that only five players constitute a starting team. Not so for football.

Teams start 11 players on offense and 11 more on defense and practice in the great outdoors large enough to grow wheat or corn.

Football coaches should never cut any player unless for disciplinary reasons.

In bridge, points – those for high cards – are very important.

If it helps, count points on your fingers under the table, where no one else can see. Or use your fingers and toes!

Often, tracking high-card points will be invaluable for finding the right play. In this deal, how should East plan the defense against four spades after West leads the diamond jack?

South’s advance of one spade showed zero to 8 points. (With 9 to 11, he would have jumped to two spades, and with 12 or more, he would have cue-bid two diamonds.) When North raised to two spades, he was saying that game was still possible. So he was promising 18 or 19 points.

Now South, with six points and a fifth trump, was happy to jump to game.

East could see three tricks: the spade king and two diamonds.

But the bidding suggested that South would have the heart king and at least one of the major-suit queens. If South had the spade queen, East had to hope his side would get a third-round heart trick. But if South had the heart queen, a second trump trick could be promoted.

East won the first trick with the diamond queen (in case West’s jack was a singleton), cashed the diamond king, and carefully continued with the diamond six.

West saw what was required, ruffing with his spade queen.

Now the contract had to fail.

REPORTER DEKALB The Daily Chronicle, a 9,000 circulation six-day a week newspaper owned by Shaw Media that covers DeKalb County, is looking for a reporter to join our team as we forge ahead with the practice of 21st century journalism.

The Daily Chronicle is an award-winning newspaper that tries to serve its community and do more than some might expect from a publication its size. DeKalb is about an hour west of Chicago, and is home to Northern Illinois University.

We're seeking a person who understands that today's reporters cover stories and connect with their audience through more than just the written word. This reporter will be comfortable if they are asked to shoot video or still photos from a scene. The successful candidate will also understand and embrace the idea that newspapers are part of the 24hour news cycle.

Ideal candidates will be willing to take on a broad range of assignments, from spot news and government meeting coverage to features, and must tell stories that show readers how the events and people are relevant to their lives. Our reporters are expected to generate their own story ideas and develop sources on their beat, as well as take assignments from the news editor.

At least one year of professional experience preferred, but recent graduates with outstanding internship experience are encouraged to apply. Solid knowledge of AP Style and grammar required, as is ability to write clear, concise copy.

Must have a valid drivers license, dependable transportation and proof of insurance. Experience with the Web and multimedia is a plus.
