Recruitment for college sports starting earlier each year

By DANNY CIAMPRONE dciamprone@shawmedia.com HINSDALE — It may seem odd to think about at first, but kids as young as 13 years old currently are being scouted and recruited to play sports in college.

“There’s a misconception on many levels that recruiting starts when you’re a senior,” said Tracey Bosch of KBB Athlete Recruiting in St. Charles. “I work with athletes as young as seventh grade.”

For high school athletes who dream of continuing athletics in college, the process can be long and highly competitive. Bosch used football as an example, stating that of the 1.1 million high schoolers

8NEWS BRIEFS School districts fight against cancer WILLOWBROOK — The students and staff of Westview Hills and Maercker schools will compete against District 61 (Eisenhower Jr. High and Lace School) and District 66 (Lakeview Jr. High and Prairie View) to raise funds to support cancer research at the Robert H. Lurie Cancer Center.

The kickoff for this event will be today with an assembly.

Students will sell a paper fist for $1 each and will have the opportunity to dedicate their fist to someone they know who has been touched by the disease.

Last year, Districts 61 and 66 raised about $22,677 for this cause and now the schools have invited District 60 to join.

The collection will take place next week. All three middle school/junior high principals have agreed to take on the challenge and the losing schools will have its principals wear the winning school’s spirit wear.

Bosch said when she talks to athletes, she covers a variety of items, including one of the most important — expectations.

“We have to take a serious look at what their expectations are and what their realities are,” she said. “When they go into the process, everyone wants to believe they have a Division I athlete, but only 3,000 do, as an example for football.”

where he realized he wanted to continue swimming competitively in college.

“Georgetown has a great academic atmosphere,” Leach said. “When I went on my visit there to meet with the coach and the team, they were so welcoming and I loved the campus and classes.”

Leach did not go through a recruiting agency. Instead, he filled out questionnaires and emailed coaches at the end of his junior year to see what kind of feedback he was getting.

After visiting, he knew Georgetown was for him, but admitted he took too long in the process.

“My biggest advice, I guess, would be to start the process a little earlier than me,” he said.

Bosch said it’s not just an athletic resume, but gradepoint average and what major the student wants to pursue has a large effect on playing college sports. She said if you’re doing it right, student athletes will start the recruiting process as freshmen if scouts aren’t noticing them before then.

“Some folks will say they don’t agree with it, that it shouldn’t happen earlier and earlier,” she said. “I think for a lot of these kids if maybe they were playing the piano or just getting in that way, it wouldn’t be as implausible to some. There are things you can identify with athletes at an early age where you know if all things keep progress-

ing as they are, that they are going to be a Division I contender.”

Bosch said the three main factors for a successful recruitment include: starting early, getting good grades and watching what you do with social media. In regards to starting early, Bosch has already seen on a website the top 20 quarterbacks for the class of 2016.

The trick is to get on everyone’s radar screen, get media attention and let coaches know you’re interested — which are services her company provides.

“I had a coach say to me once, ‘If your local paper isn’t writing about you, I don’t need to know about you, either,’” she said.

The board sought the in-depth analysis before the April 9 referendum, in which voters in Butler School District 53 will be asked whether to approve building a new K-8 school at the Sports Core.

“I was very touched, and I cried a little,” she said.

“There are so many people in this community that have done so much, that for me to be singled out, to get this recognition, I was a little embarrassed but so honored because this is one of the biggest awards in Darien.”

Marchese was nominated anonymously for the award, and a committee judged all nominations after the Jan. 7 deadline.

“I think volunteering originated with my mother,” she said. “My mother used to volunteer at the school when I was in grammar school so I think it’s just in your blood.

When my children were in grammar school I was a stayat-home mom ... and I volunteered at the school so I could see my children and also be involved in all the activities.”

the Darien Lions Club for its annual Candy Day fundraiser, which takes place in mid-October. For the past 25 years, residents have seen Marchese collecting money for the blind and deaf at intersections in exchange for candy.

“I’m not like a leader, but I’m an extra set of hands that you’ll always find around the community,” she said.

Marchese loves her community, but her family always comes first and is one of the main reasons she is who she is.

“My children and grandchildren are the love of my life ... along with my hus-

band, of course. I don’t want to leave him out,” she said. “I would not be who I am today without my husband.”

Marchese was not always the outgoing activity-oriented woman that she is today and credited that to her husband, Joe, whom she’s been married to for 40 years.

“I was very shy and when I married him I saw his interests and I think that’s prompted me to do what I do,” she said.

A dinner-dance honoring Marchese will take place March 16 at Alpine Banquets.

In SIR1, Sally wanted to see if one could use a color spectrum that would interfere with the growth of bacteria simply by changing the bulbs in the room.

The experiment proved to be a failure, but it didn’t matter.

“The cool thing about this class is that you learn just as much when you fail,” said Peter Pintz, another teacher who helped start and run the class. “Despite things not working, (Sally) developed those skills so when she goes to a university she can say she has them.”

And working in the lab was one of her favorite things to do — a nice break from the typical classroom.

“You can read anything in a textbook, like when I add this solution to that solution this happens, but that’s just words so you don’t necessarily know what’s going on,” she said. “If you do it your-

Senior Emma Jerzyk, 17, said it’s “more realistic to the way science is outside of school because there aren’t really right answers.”

For her project, she worked with a PhD candidate in psychology at Washington University in St. Louis and researched how the brain processes rhythm.

“I had people come in and they put on a set of headphones and listen to a certain rhythm, then I had them try to maintain a steady beat throughout that rhythm,” she said. “I found that certain types of rhythm threw them off more than others.”

Luckily for future students, what started as an idea after attending a conference quickly turned into a popular summer school class.

SIR1 will now be offered in the regular curriculum next year, and both Emma and Sally will be graduating.

Sally is studying to work in chemistry and computer science, while Emma hopes to one day be a surgeon.

Their teachers are confident their summer school experience can help jump-start their careers.

“If you look at the secondyear kids and what they did, a lot of what they did really blows your mind,” Pintz said. “What some of these high school sophomores and juniors are doing, I was doing my sophomore and junior years of college.”

HINSDALE — A summer course at Hinsdale Central High School strives to modernize science class and put the fun back into the lab.

“The idea was to teach them how to be a scientist versus learning what scientists had done in the past,” said Mark Wollschlaeger, one of the teachers who helped start the class, Science Inquiry and Research.

SIR was first offered to students at Hinsdale Central and Hinsdale South in 2011.

Instead of memorizing science facts and reading about other people’s research, students would conduct their own research and use the scientific method to investigate something they were interested in.

The honors-level class also required a bit of commitment from a student’s summer — five hours a day,

five days a week for seven weeks.

“We had no idea if we would even get enough students for the class to run and we wound up with 26 students,” Wollschlaeger said.

“We went from thinking, ‘Are we going to have enough to run the class?’ to ‘How are we going to manage 26 projects simultaneously?’”

There are two levels to the SIR class: SIR1 and SIR2.

SIR1 first outlines the scientific method and students pitch their ideas. The rest of the time, they work on their own research. In SIR2, students spend time with a mentor from a university and work together on a project.

One of those students was 17-year-old Sally McNichols, who first took the class after her sophomore year.

“My first-year project, I tested the effects of light on E. coli growth,” the senior said. “The second year, I actually ended up working at a

Theft reported • A cellphone valued at $100 was reported stolen from a home by a known suspect who had authorized access to be within the owner’s home at 3 p.m. Feb. 12 in the 600 block of West Hinsdale Avenue.

• An office manager reported a stolen envelope from a desk drawer in the office at Hinsdale Gastroenterology Associates, 907 N. Elm St., between 10:45 a.m. and 12:30 p.m. Feb. 13. The stolen envelope contained $20, a personal check and three charge receipts.

Battery charged Isabel Espinoza, 45, 8238 Woodland Drive, Darien, was charged with domestic battery at 9:47 a.m. Feb. 15 in the 10 block of East First Street after making contact of a provoking nature toward her boyfriend. Espinoza allegedly used a kitchen knife to cut the victim’s arm.

DARIEN Thefts reported • Someone entered an unlocked minivan parked in a driveway sometime overnight Jan. 30 in the 300 block of Janet Avenue. Assorted gift cards were stolen that totaled about $300.

• Someone reported that a concrete lion statue had been stolen from a front porch at 10 a.m. Jan. 27 in the 900 block of Juniper Lane. The last time the victim saw it outside of the home was on Jan. 25. Estimated loss is $100.

Property damaged • Someone damaged a mailbox by bending the door of the mailbox in half, rendering it inoperable, sometime overnight Jan. 27 in the 3500 block of Burgess Place.

Estimated damage is $80.

• Someone spray painted a victim’s garage door between 11:30 a.m. Feb. 1 and 1:59 p.m. Feb. 2 in the 8300 block of Portsmouth Drive.

• Someone damaged a living room window by using an unknown blunt object at 6 p.m. Feb. 1 in the 8200 block of Woodland Drive.

Estimated loss is $200.

Assault charged Antwan Halmon, 35, 10 South 660 Lilac Lane, Willowbrook, was charged with assault at 5:35 p.m. Jan. 24 at Cass Avenue and Sleepy Hollow Lane. Halmon allegedly began a verbal argument with a victim while driving and

when the victim got out of the car, Halmon ran over the victim’s foot. The victim refused medical treatment.

Officers located a small sandwich-size plastic bag containing suspected marijuana from Colonna while he was sitting in his car in the parking lot of McDonald’s. Laura Zaliauskas, 33, 1536 Lakeview Drive, Darien, was charged with unlawful possession of marijuana and possession of drug paraphernalia at the same time inside the McDonald’s.

Officers located a “marijuana brownie” on Zaliauskas along with a bag of suspected marijuana.

Zaliauskas also had a glass pipe that contained suspected marijuana residue.

• Craig Lewis, 28, 5606 Macarthur Drive, Woodridge, was charged with unlawful possession of marijuana and possession of drug paraphernalia at 1:06 a.m.

Argonne research focusing on supercomputers Debuting last year as the world’s third-fastest computer, the new supercomputer at Argonne National Laboratory is a superstar in its own right that also happens to be capable of simulating a trillion stars.

The massive machine, named Mira (from Latin “miraculum,” or “object of wonder”) adds a tremendous amount of computational power to the nation.

Research teams from around the world are preparing to use Mira to tackle the most challenging problems in science and engineering today.

What happens when a star explodes? Can we find alternative fuel sources? How hot will the greenhouse world be?

These problems cannot be addressed any other way because of their sheer size or complexity. Mira will be used to compress time and explore many possible solutions to issues related to energy and the environment. It will enable the prototyping and testing of construction materials before they are ever physically built and will help search for effective vaccines to deadly infections.

Those lucky enough to own a home in Hinsdale are investors in a piece of history.

Our village has more than its share of modern construction — both gaudy and tasteful. But the unique value of our community lies in its character, its charm and a certain Norman Rockwellquality that other towns simply cannot offer.

We owe much of that charm to vintage homes from centuries past. These homes dot the landscape like seeds of a bygone era, sprouting roots that hold fast to the special qualities that make Hinsdale exceptional. Their very presence mutes the impact of more flamboyant homesteads and reminds visitors of why this community is cherished above others.

That is why I am so disappointed that one of the most precious examples of local residential craftsmanship is being sold under the banner “tear-down” real estate. The home at 206 N. Washington St. was once described in the November 1897 issue of Campbell’s Illustrated Journal as, “One of the

He explains that the combination is a popular trend in India, where Chinese immigrants attuned their culinary skills to suit the tastes of the local population.

The spices of India infuse the dishes at Pereira’s restaurant inside the Meadowbrook Shopping Center on 63rd Street in Downers Grove, just east of Belmont Road (Finley). The eatery is tucked along the side of a courtyard in the western half of the mall. Inside the space, he has created an appealing dining room, where hanging lamps are turned low in the evening and add to the warm ambiance.

While beer and wine are available, one of the favorite beverages is the mango lassi, a creamy concoction of mango in a yogurt base, colorfully presented in a cocktail glass. He says the drink is an Indian favorite.

Pereira’s background includes working with the luxurious Taj Hotels group in India, and helping launch Indian restaurants in the Chicago area. Taste is the first establishment of his own.

“This is my dream,” he says. “I wanted to have a restaurant where I could serve people quality food for a very good price.”

He says the chefs are happy to accommodate special requests and cater to the American palate, adding, “Since we make everything fresh, we can make (dishes) mild to medium to spicy.”

Taste offers vegetarian dishes, in addition to chicken, seafood, beef and lamb, as well as gluten-free options. No pork is served, and no peanut oil is used, only vegetable.

A fan is Tanya Schmidt of Downers Grove, who enjoys dining there with husband Carl, or ordering carryout.

“They make the best soup in the universe — the Manchow soup,” she says, noting she traveled frequently to China on business before becoming a teacher. “It beats anything I’ve had there.”

She says she’s hooked on the General Tsao’s chicken, while her husband recommends the shredded lamb with hot garlic sauce.

She praises the delicate spring rolls, and the wide choice in vegetarian dishes.

“With all the corporate restaurants, it’s so lovely to have a small, privately owned restaurant that makes wonderful food,” she says. “You get very personal service, and they care about whether you like what you’ve eaten there.”

Having lunch with her family recently was Anu Mathur of Burr Ridge.

“Everything is tasty,” she said as they shared dishes, noting friends recommended they try Taste. “We’ll be back. They do a good job catering to what you want. (For example, making it the) medium spicy I requested.”

Indian ice cream is made in house. Available in pistachio or mango flavors, a petite portion adds a sweet finish to the meal.

After Hours Film Society unites movie lovers

By ALLISON HORNE msleditorial@shawmedia.com Debbie Venezia of Glen Ellyn received a phone call in 1999 that would change her life — and the future of her After Hours Film Society.

The call was from Shirley Johnson, co-owner of the Tivoli Theatre in Downers Grove, inquiring whether Debbie would be interested in transplanting the society to the larger venue.

The move was a good one, and Venezia calls it a dream come true. The 1,000-seat Tivoli has ample room for the average 440 guests who come to the movies, and enough to accommodate the majority of the society’s 1,100 members.

Meeting each second and fourth Monday, the society features foreign and art films, as well as classics. Upcoming films include “Central Park Five,” “Rust and Bone” and “Royal Affair.”

One of the organization’s highlights is the annual student film festival, which is accepting entries until June.

As the society’s 25th anniversary approaches, Venezia reflects on how far the group she founded has come.

What made you want to start a film society in the suburbs?

I’ve always loved foreign and art films. In the 1980s, I used to drive down to the Music Box (in Chicago) every Friday or Saturday. I’d be fighting traffic, paying for parking, and it became an allday excursion. I kept thinking, ‘I can’t be the only one that wants to do this.’ I called my brother one night, and told him about a small Hinsdale theater that showed foreign films occasionally, and asked if he thought the owners would think I was crazy to volunteer to work the movies and sell tickets to save payroll expenses. He said, ‘Why don’t you form a film society?’ I said, ‘What’s that?’ That was the beginning.

Do you pick all the films shown?

I do, but I also take suggestions and recommendations. I read the New York Times, and I watch (to) see what films are opening here or there, and I compile a list.

I do rely heavily on word of mouth and other reviews.

There have been one or two

films I’ve been disappointed with, but the rest is kind of an adventure. I don’t even like to read reviews before I see a film — too much of the plot is revealed and it ruins the experience. You don’t know what will happen an hour from now in your own life, and that’s how I like to look at films.

I’m in support of all kinds of films — mainstream or my favorite: independent. It’s fabulous.

He did so in resounding fashion.

After falling in the semifinals at the state wrestling finals the last two years, the Hinsdale Central junior won big in last Friday’s semifinal match, needing just 32 seconds to pin T.F. South’s Corinthian McBridge.

“Once I got through that — it was a feeling I never had before,” Allen said. “I never won in that round before, so it was a relief to get to the finals.”

Relief turned into euphoria

as Allen went on to take home the Class 3A 285-pound title the next day, completing an undefeated season and picking up the bracket board he had in his sights all season.

After the semifinal win, Allen had a whole day to get set for his championship match showdown with Neuqua Valley’s Andrew Geers, who also entered the bout undefeated.

He spent his time getting mentally prepared.

“I had some time to think about it,” Allen said. “I’ve wrestled Geers before (in my career) so I had some time to watch film on him and put together a game plan going into the final match.”

As expected when two undefeated wrestlers meet in the final match of the year, the Allen-Geers bout was a tight affair. But Allen prevailed, becoming the second undefeated state champ in the family after older brother Jack Allen completed a perfect season in 2011.

“I’ve been down there three times now and the last couple years I haven’t been able

to close things up the way I wanted to, so to finally get the title and that bracket board is kind of a relief. “It was fun,” said Allen, who will return next season with a chance to set Hinsdale Central’s alltime wins record and become the Red Devils’ first two-time champ.

Allen wasn’t the only one who had fun at the state finals.

A week after finishing third in the Shepard sectional at 138, sophomore Juwan Edmund made it to the title match and finished second in his second trip to state. He was fifth at 126 last year.

“It was pretty fun,” Edmund said. “I didn’t like the

way it ended, it didn’t end the way I wanted it to, but it was pretty fun.”

Edmund started his tourney with a pair of major decision wins (16-6 and 14-2), then won 8-1 in the semifinals to make the championship match.

“I was staying in my stance, working my shots and just wrestle how I usually wrestle,” Edmund said.

Belleville West’s Mech Spraggins got the best of Edmund 7-2, which provided motivation as he didn’t plan to waste any time prepping for next season.

“I won’t start wrestling for a little while,” he said, “but (Wednesday) I’ll be lifting.”

Central (18-6) led 16-13 after a quarter, but East (23-3) battled back to take a 40-26 halftime lead.

The Red Devils flipped the script in the third quarter and whittled the deficit down to 50-44 at the end of the third quarter.

throws cut East’s lead to 52-50 with 5:58 left in the game, and though the Pirates went just 7-of-14 at the free throw line in the fourth, they did just enough to fend off the Red Devils.

Tuesday vs. No. 12 Geneva or No. 21 Wheaton Warrenville South Outlook: If nothing else, the Red Devils have plenty of momentum on their side heading toward the playoffs.

After they fell to 1-1 in the West Suburban Silver with a December loss to Oak ParkRiver Forest, they won their next 10 conference games to claim the outright title. They were 12-0 in 2013 before Wednesday’s 66-59 loss to state power Proviso East — a West Suburban crossover meeting between the two division champions.

Central’s reward for all that hard work was to be thrown into one of the toughest sectionals in the state.

“Probably the top four seeds were clear-cut but you take five all the way down to 15 or 16 and there are some good teams,” Central coach Nick Latorre said. “It’s a great sectional.”

Though the sectional field is deep, the Red Devils have the horses to compete. Senior

has gone 4-5, and two of those losses — to Proviso East and Morton — helped prep the Hornets for the postseason.

“Those were a couple of tough games, but we played really good, especially against Morton,” said South coach Tanner Mitchell, whose team had an eight-point lead on the Mustangs in the second half Feb. 12.

“The kids played well. I’m proud of the way they played.”

Additionally, South has had nine single-digit losses, four of those by three points or less; just another sign the Hornets are close to turning things in their favor.

“We’ve had a lot of close games. It seems like every game we’re in comes down to the wire,” Mitchell said.

Playing in those kinds of pressure situations should have South ready for the challenge of playing a true road game against regional host Oswego East in the playoff opener.

“It’s going to be a challenge, but we’re looking forward to it,” Mitchell said.

With a win in the opener, Central would move on to the regional championship game at 7:30 p.m. Friday, likely against No. 4 seed West Aurora. The key to winning the first game and moving on is the same as it has been all season long.

“We have to guard people and take care of the ball,” Latorre said. “When we are able to run our offense and get the ball inside, we are tough and when we guard and rebound, that really completes us.”

Maslow medals in first trip to state

By JASON ROSSI jrossi@shawmedia.com CHAMPAIGN — Mike Matozzi believes there is a progression to achieving success at the state wrestling tournament.

“In the years I’ve been coaching,” the Hinsdale South coach said, “It’s first you qualify, then you place and then you think about becoming a state champion.”

Justin Maslow must have tuned out his coach during that lesson because the junior placed fifth at 145 pounds in his first trip to the Class 3A tournament last weekend at Assembly Hall in Champaign.

“Going in there I was kind of an underdog,” Maslow said. “People didn’t really know who I was because I didn’t even qualify last year, but now I definitely have confidence and the stuff to back it up where I know I have a chance to be the best kid next year.”

“All my matches were kind of close, but the one I won in the quarterfinal wrestlebacks where I was sure I was going to place, that was my best match,” Maslow said.

“To be able to medal his first time down there is an outstanding accomplish-

ment,” Matozzi said.

An offseason of hard work, training and wrestling got Maslow to state this year. He plans to stick with that formula as he gets ready for next season.

“I think Overtime (School of Wrestling) starts in two or three weeks, so I hope I can make the Fargo freestyle (national championship tournament) team and just wrestle throughout the whole summer,” Maslow said.

Freshman Joshua King also represented South at state and had a 1-2 showing at 220 pounds at the tourney, but Matozzi still found positives in that performance.

“I know he wanted to be on the medal stand and he was disappointed after his second loss,” Matozzi said.

When Hinsdale Central’s wrestling team faced Sandburg Tuesday in the Class 3A Hinsdale South dual team sectional, the Eagles won 43-20. While the final might not show it, the Red Devils performed well, even as their season came to a close.

“That’s all we asked of our guys, to go out and compete hard,” Central coach Jason Hayes said. “We know Sandburg has a tough team. They’re probably one of the teams that could end up being state champions, so that’s a tough draw.”

Sandburg’s lineup included three individual state champs and another finalist, but aside from Ricky Robertson’s secondperiod pin, all of the bouts pitting Central wrestlers against Sandburg state finalists were close.

“I thought our kids wrestled tough,” Hayes said. “We wrestled Sebastian Pique down to the wire, C.J. Brucki down to the wire. You can’t

ask for much more than good effort, and for them to go out and compete hard.”

Starting at 113 pounds, Sandburg won the first four matches of the dual. Juwan Edmund and Tom Ward had back-to-back third-period pins to steal back some momentum for Central, but the Eagles won the next fives matches to take control.

Matt Allen (7-3 decision) and Brian Allen (25-10 technical fall) had back-to-back wins, but Sandburg’s 37-12 lead prior to the Allen wins was too much to overcome.

“I think we performed all right. We wrestled our best and did what we could do, but in the end I think they were just the better team,” Brian Allen said.

“We just have to keep working and hopefully we can be like them soon. They’re a pretty tough team and they’re going to be right there until the end.”

The Red Devils topped Oak Park-River Forest in two previous meetings this season, but the third time wasn’t the charm as the Huskies won 70-56 in a Class 4A regional semifinal game Feb. 14 at Hinsdale Central.

Gabrielle Rush and Lily Sarros scored 16 points apiece, and Sarros grabbed 13 rebounds, but it wasn’t enough to overcome a career-high 39 points from OPRF’s Caroline Kelty.

WESTERN SPRINGS — Even though Hinsdale Central’s boys swimming team earned 12 solo berths to this weekend’s state meet and 15 overall, its title at the Lyons Township sectional was a team effort.

There was a little bit of everything as the Red Devils ran away with the title.

“There was a sophomore who had never swam distance before and he cut 15 seconds,” Central coach Corky King said of Adam Pircon, who finished fourth in the 500-yard freestyle with a time of 4:47.15.

“One of his goals was to make varsity as a sophomore, and now he’s going to state.”

King also enjoyed seeing freshman Craig Smith qualify in the 100 backstroke after he finished second with a time of 52.98 seconds. The coach suspected Smith might have had some motivation from older brother Mark Smith, a senior who punched his ticket in the 100 butterfly (second, 52.37) earlier in the meet.

The Red Devils crowned three champions on the day.

Sophomore Brian Portland in the 100 butterfly (52.08) earned the lone solo win and swam on two winning relays.
