Say goodbye to winter boredom VIEWS Natalie Seidel “I’m bored!” When chilly temperatures abound, parents are likely to hear this dreaded complaint from their children.

To allay boredom, kids tend to spend more time in front of television screens, behind video game controllers or seated at computers during the winter. But there are plenty of imaginative ways to keep the little ones active and entertained on frosty weekends and snowy days.

Consider trying the following activities before spring blossoms: • Indoor beach party: When it’s chilly outside, there’s nothing more heart-warming than playing make believe at an indoor beach party. This idea was inspired by the teachers at Friendship Station Preschool, who planned an indoor beach party in January. Lay out towels, get out the beach chairs and inflate floatees for story time on the beach. Don your swimsuits, and “fly” to your tropical stay-cation spot. Create coral reef and fish cutouts to set the scene for an indoor picnic including Goldfish snacks and Hawaiian punch. Then, “swim” and crabwalk through the house, hula dance and do the limbo, before playing “Go Fish.”

Finally, wrap up the day by scuba diving in the bubble bath. What’s the best part of bringing the beach indoors?

Before heading back inside, store a special snowball in the freezer as a fun reminder of this winter day. To warm up, throw blankets in the dryer before snuggling up with hot cocoa.

Another corny growing season ahead Early indications show farmers are not phased by 2012 drought, intend to plant large amount of corn

By JONATHAN BILYK jbilyk@shawmedia.com With the memories of summer’s heat and dryness fresh, Jeff Eggleston has heard local farmers talk about growing less corn in 2013.

Their money is saying something different, said Eggleston, general manager at Maple Park-based Hintzsche Fertilizer.

“There’s talk, sure,” Eggleston said. “But we’re seeing orders for seed and nitrogen fertilizer as strong as ever.

“So, if I had to bet, I’d place my bets that we may actually see a slight bump in corn acres.”

Last summer, a historic drought dominated the growing and harvest season.

By fall, almost three-quarters of Illinois had slipped into “extreme drought,” which is one category less than the worst drought condition classification used by the U.S. Drought Monitor.

The drought also damaged Illinois’ 2012 corn crop.

Estimates of Kane County’s 2012 corn crop have yet to be published by the U.S. Agriculture Department.

But statewide, Illinois farmers produced about 1.29 billion bushels of corn in 2012, a decrease of about a third from the 1.95 billion bushels of corn produced in 2011.

The yield also was down by a third. In 2010 and 2011, the statewide corn yield checked in at 157 bushels per acre. In 2012, the yield stood at 105 bushels per acre, making 2012 the worst year for corn production in Illinois since the drought of 1988.

Kane County farmers and grain distributors have said local production fared slightly better in 2012, with yields of about 120 to 130 bushels per acre.

By the numbers Official estimates have not yet been issued for how much corn was produced in Kane County in 2012. But the total is expected to be down about a quarter to a third from 2011. About 68 percent of Kane County’s land is estimated to be used for agricultural production.

Joe White, who farms near Elburn and serves as the president of the Kane County Farm Bureau, said after years of increasing corn production, the 2012 drought made local growers think about their crop rotation.

Many farmers rotate fields between corn and soybeans or other crops.

White, for instance, operates his fields on an annual rotated mix of about 60 percent corn and 40 percent for soybeans.

But in recent years, a growing number of farmers in pursuit of greater profits from historically high corn prices have altered their crop rotation schedule, opting to plant “corn on corn” on fields – meaning rather than planting soybeans in their cornfields to recharge the soil, they apply nitrogen fertilizer to nourish the soil for corn in consecutive years.

Last year, White said some local growers observed that “corn-on-corn” fields generated less corn than fields that had been rotated with soybeans the year before.

“It could have been as much as 30 to 40 bushels per acre less,” White said. “That’s a pretty big deal.”

And because soybeans generally are more drought-resis-

tant than corn, planting more soybeans may prove enticing to growers, White said.

Overall, White and Chris Gould, who farms near Maple Park, said they believe local farmers will not allow last year’s results to dictate this year’s planting plans.

“We still need more rain in the spring, but we’re not talking about huge [rainfall] deficits,” Gould said.

“Things are actually shaping up pretty good,” he said.

By AL LAGATTOLLA alagattolla@shawmedia.com SUGAR GROVE – Stacey Merkel Puett said there were times when one of her children would get sick, and she would round up all of her kids, pack them into a vehicle and take them for a trip out of town, just for minor medical care.

That routine may be a thing of the past. The opening of Rush-Copley Convenient Care at 472 N. Route 47 in Sugar Grove will make things easier, Puett said. The center opened earlier this year.

“It’s across the street,” said Puett, joking that she’s “hoping not to visit” but that it’s a much better option for something minor such as an ear infection.

The center offers four treatment rooms, an X-ray room and a lab. A convenient care center provides treatment for conditions that need attention – less than what is provided by an emergency care center or a hospital, but more than what might be offered in a retail setting. Treatment for colds, the flu, infections, fever or broken bones are possible, and sports physicals can be performed there.

The center is open from 8 a.m. to 8 p.m. Monday through Friday and 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. Saturday and Sunday.

City project earns more accolades

Aldermen unanimously approve Western Avenue resurfacing

By ASHLEY RHODEBECK arhodebeck@shawmedia.com ST. CHARLES – A city project that was honored last year by the Chicago Metropolitan Chapter of the American Public Works Association has received more accolades.

The American Council of Engineering Companies of Illinois recently awarded the Wells 3 and 4 Radium Removal Project with the Merit Award for Engineering Excellence.

Located on Riverside Avenue, the radium removal facility ensures compliance with federal mandates regarding drinking water.

At Tuesday’s City Council meeting, project manager Jeff Freeman of Engineering Enterprises Inc. congratulated St. Charles for the facility and noted it came in about $1 million below budget.

John Lamb, the city’s environmental services manager, told the City Council the facility is working well for the city, improving water quality and efficiency.

“It is a real honor to receive these awards,” Lamb said.

“The residents are really the winners here,” Mayor Don DeWitte said.

In other news, finance director Chris Minick provided the Government Operations

Committee with the financial results for December.

“I’m happy to report there’s not a lot of surprises,” Minick said.

The general fund is projected to end the fiscal year with a surplus of $288,609, compared to a projected deficit of nearly $725,000 when the budget was approved.

The city’s largest revenue source – sales and use tax – is trending about 4 percent lower than projections. Other revenue – including hotel, telecommunications and alcohol taxes – are trending above expectations.

“Although sales tax revenues are currently short of budget projections for the fiscal year, the increasing trend in this revenue source is encouraging,” Minick said in his written report. “Yearto-date sales tax receipts are $339,868 or 3.6 percent higher than last fiscal year-to-date receipts.”

Expenditures are about 5.1 percent below budget.

Other highlights: • The electric fund is projected to have an operating surplus of about $500,000. A $2.7 million deficit was anticipated when the budget was approved.

• The water fund is on track to end with a $785,192 deficit.

A $1 million deficit originally was expected.

He and his wife, Nancy, co-chaired the St. Peter Catholic Church Barn Sale and were dedicated volunteers for that event for many years. He was a past member of the Geneva School Board and Geneva Plan Commission and currently was serving as alderman of the 5th Ward for the Geneva City Council. Bud proudly served his country in the Army Air Corps during World War II. Bud worked at Metro Paint Supplies in Elgin and United Auto in Aurora. He was an avid baseball fan of the Philadelphia Phillies and Chicago White Sox. He was a member of the First Presbyterian Church in Aurora for more than 40 years.

Later, he was a member of the Congregational Church of Batavia.

He was a very active member of the Batavia Senior Citizens Club.

He is survived by his daughter, Debra (Ralph) Anderson of Downers Grove; his grandchildren, Steven and Kimberlee Anderson; a sister, Jean Weiant of Allentown, Pa.; a sister-in-law, Barbra German; several nieces and nephews; and a special friend, Elaine Schimelpfenig, and her family.

In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by two wives, Shirley Eyre and Marian Murphy; a sister, Gloria (Charles) Heintzelman; and a brother, Robert German.

SYCAMORE – R. William Boynton, 78, passed away peacefully at home in Sycamore on the evening of Sunday, Feb. 17, 2013.

Bill was born April 22, 1934, in Oak Park to Lee and Eleanor Boynton.

He graduated from St. Charles High School in 1952 and attended Beloit College in Wisconsin. On Dec. 19, 1953, he was united in marriage to Carolyn Janet Yoder in Pitman, N.J. In 1966, Bill took a risk and started his own business, Boynton Plastics Service, in the basement of the family home in St. Charles. He used the same philosophy for the business as he did in his life, to serve others with joy and to the best of his abilities. While Bill had not been active at the company for many years, it still exists to this day, and its foundation remains the same.

Bill’s greatest joy in life was Carolyn, to whom he dedicated his life to, especially in her last several years, providing her with daily love and care. Bill also loved to play golf with his friends, his children and most of all, Carolyn, and he had opportunities to travel and play in many locations around the country and Europe.

Bill is survived by his children, Robert (Amy Milton) of St. Charles, Daniel (Theresa Potter) of Decatur and Nancy (Boynton) Stika (Scott) of Sycamore; many grandchildren; and his sister, Patricia Binks (Harry).

Bill was preceded in death by his parents and his wife, Carolyn, who died Oct. 31, 2007.

A service of worship and thanksgiving will be at 10 a.m. Saturday, Feb. 23, at Lord of Life Church, 40W605 Route 38 in Elburn. Burial will be in Union Cemetery, 1200 N. Fifth Ave. in St. Charles. Long after his children had graduated, he was a fixture at Geneva High School football games, where he was an enthusiastic member of the “Chain Gang.” He also loved traveling, particularly vacationing with his family and being with friends.

First and foremost in his life, however, was his family. Whether it was coaching, working puzzles, sports, backyard cookouts, short trips or long vacations, he loved spending time with his family and they loved being with him.

He is survived by his wife, Nancy, whom he married June 29, 1984; his children, Tom (Marianna) of Carol Stream, Sara of Chicago, Russell of Chicago, Lindsey of Geneva and Drew of Geneva; grandchildren, Nicolette, Gabriella and Salvatore; father, Michael of Florida; brother, Michael (Cathy) of Woodstock; sister, Lisa (Ray) Kind of Round Lake; several aunts, uncles, nieces and nephews; and a host of friends who will all miss him dearly.

Ralph was preceded in death by his mother, Serafina.

Funeral prayers will be at 9 a.m.

Friday, Feb. 22, at Malone Funeral Home, 324 East State St. (Route 38), Geneva, then proceeding to St. Peter Catholic Church, 1891 Kaneville Road, Geneva, for celebration of Mass, with Father Michael Chernetzki as celebrant.

The Federal Communications Commission is reorganizing the electromagnetic spectrum – which enables television signals to reach into Americans’ homes, radio into their cars, WiFi into their coffee shops and 4G cellphone service into their pockets – and The Post’s Cecilia Kang reports that high-tech companies are doing battle with telecommunications firms over who will get which share.

That portion of the spectrum is extremely valuable because broadcast signals using those frequencies can easily penetrate concrete walls or bend around trees, and the country’s cellphone networks need it. These networks have revolutionized daily life, making immense quantities of information accessible to millions of Americans from practically anywhere. But as streaming video becomes more common, those networks will get increasingly creaky without more spectrum.

Reserving freed-up spectrum for individual companies willing to pay for its exclusive use will promote network reliability and private investment in new communications

infrastructure, since those firms – and their customers – would have assurance that their signals won’t be crowded and won’t encounter interference.

To ensure that strong signals don’t interfere with one another, the FCC would create “guard bands” between the blocks it would license off. The FCC would then open up those guard bands for anyone to use for free, as long as they weren’t used to broadcast high-power signals. Similar arrangements in the past enabled the proliferation of baby monitors, cordless home phones, car key remotes – and WiFi signals.

vide public wireless Internet access to whole cities or rural zones, for example, or to link smart electricity meters with utilities, home appliances and each other. Myriad other innovations would no doubt be possible with new, unlicensed spectrum available to all sorts of inventors.

So, what’s the dispute? One side worries that regulators will make the guard bands too large, reserving more spectrum for unlicensed use than is necessary to prevent interference and thereby reducing what telecommunications companies could use to bolster their networks. And some even want to see the guard bands sold off. The other side pushes back that at least a handful of frequencies must be available

for inventors to use freely; otherwise, high costs would deter valuable innovation.

The FCC should base the size of the guard bands on the best reckoning of engineers on how wide they must be to serve their primary technical purpose. Anyone who has browsed recently through mobile-app stores knows that lots of useful innovation happens after spectrum is sold off. It’s very reasonable, though, for some of the public airwaves to be more publicly accessible, allowing free use of the spectrum that’s left over and enabling anyone from Google to would-be inventors tinkering in their garage to design low-power devices that would take advantage of it.

There also are business classes that can help you achieve your goal – think finance, accounting, entrepreneurship, economic, marketing, management and more.

A leading technology theorist recently wrote in a CNN column, “Learn to code – get a job.” This is good advice because people with a strong coding skillset and a passion for technology rarely are looking for work. Increasing your programming literacy can help you get your business idea off the ground, strengthen your skillset and understand the digital world around you.

ELBURN – Elburn Village Trustees worked to refine a video gaming ordinance as the board continued its discussion Tuesday about legalizing video gambling in the village.

Jay Spoden, president of Sugar Grove-based Tiger Electronics, a company that installs video gaming machines, was present Tuesday to clear up questions from the board. He said the village would get 5 percent of the profits and noted the money from video gaming would go into the village’s general fund and isn’t earmarked.

Elburn officials banned video gaming in 2009, when the state allowed establishments with liquor licenses to apply for as many as five video gaming machines.

The Village Board is considering lifting the ban, and

just trying to make it as easy as possible for someone working there.”

Spoden said the machines are required to be under video surveillance.

Village attorney Bob Britz said it’s in the establishment’s best interest to make sure everyone who gambles is of age because a violation could mean that the establishment’s liquor license would be revoked.

Trustee Bill Grabarek asked whether the village could add a stipulation into the gaming ordinance that allows the village to have access to all of the information in an Illinois Gaming Board application. He asked that the village have access to an establishment’s stakeholders. Spoden said anyone who applies for a video gaming license is required to disclose any shareholders who have at least 5 percent invested in an establishment.

You love your smartphone, always have the latest device and check Twitter before you grab your coffee in the morning. Or perhaps you recently purchased your first smartphone and are getting used to all the computing power you’re carrying around.

Either way, you might be struck by that inspirational moment of creativity, societal good and potential profit when you ask the following question: “Why isn’t there an app that does this?”

And there you are. You have the idea but little notion of how to create it.

Mobile devices already are one of the most pervasive consumer digital technologies the world has seen. At 6.7 billion, mobile subscriptions should pass the number of human beings sometime this year, and 60 percent of the global population has a mobile phone. Compare this to the personal computer, which experts estimate has about 2 billion units worldwide with slowing growth. If you are looking to reach the most people, mobile devices are the platform of the present and future.

Two main players dominate the smartphone market.

Apple’s iOS and Google’s Android have between 80 and 90 percent of the smartphone market, with Android defeating Apple in market share around 3 to 1. So, if you’re looking to reach the most users for your killer app, you likely will want to focus on these platforms.

While many people have ideas for a hot new app, getting it created is another story. Assuming you don’t have access to a venture capitalist and an engineering team, what do you do?

You have to write code. Over the past year, there has been discussion of “programming literacy” – the concept that to

officials spent Tuesday refining its ordinance should they decide video gaming could be allowed.

Trustee Ken Anderson asked Elburn Police Chief Steven Smith if he knew whether video gaming would be an extra burden for the police force when it comes to regulating the people using the machines.

“I can’t see it impacting us very much,” Smith said.

Anderson asked if it would be possible to require people to wear wristbands so those working at an establishment can easily determine that people who are video gambling are 21 years old. He said it might be difficult to keep track of who is using the machines because sometimes there is little separation between the gaming terminals and the rest of an establishment.

“It’s just a yellow line on the floor,” he said. “… I’m

Boosters to hold Knight of Performances

By STEPHANIE KOHL editorial@kcchronicle.com With more than 50 performing acts, a barbecue dinner and a basket raffle, the Knight of Performances Barbeque Dinner is billed as an event for the whole family.

The Kaneland Performing Arts Boosters will host the event from 4:30 to 7 p.m.

March 9 at Harter Middle School, 1601 Esker Drive in Sugar Grove.

The event will feature middle and high school students performing vocal or instrumental solos or ensembles; Harter Middle School’s MidKnight Special, Mattina Brass and Jazz Band; and Kaneland High School’s Jazz Combos and This Is No Act, among other performances.

“It’s a wide variety of students that are performing,” said Denise Blaszynski, president of the Kaneland Performing Arts Boosters. “Everything from classical to jazz to contemporary.”

Blaszynski said it was Brian Kowalski, choral and drama director at Harter Middle School, who suggested the event include solo and ensemble performers.

“It gives them an opportunity to develop their talents outside of a classroom setting,” Kowalski said.

Admission is free, but dinners must be ordered in advance. A pork chop, chicken or combination dinner is $12, a pulled pork sandwich dinner is $9 and a kid’s meal or vegetarian option is $5. All dinners come with a dessert ticket.

Kowalski added he hopes performing at the event gives students a chance to be creative and enjoy being in front of an audience.

Raffle items include White Sox tickets, Fiddler on the Roof tickets, passes to the BMW Championship Golf Tournament and local restaurant and business gift certificates.

The Kaneland Performing Arts Boosters supports the band, choir and theater programs and directors at Kaneland Harter Middle School and Kaneland High School. Some items they hope to purchase with money raised are a handheld audio recorder for the middle school; chorale folio cabinets; concert tuxedos and dresses for the high school choir; and a drum major podium for the marching band.

“We’re so fortunate to have such great musicians and actors in the community,” Blaszynski said.

kdruley@shawmedia.com BARTLETT – More tears streamed from the faces of Geneva girls basketball fans than players as the Vikings walked from their locker room back into the Bartlett gym Tuesday night.

By no means content with a season-ending loss to Wheaton Warrenville South in a 4A Bartlett Sectional semifinal, the Vikings still accepted the result, as well as the prolonged turning point.

The Tigers scored the game’s first 16 points before holding on for a 62-53 victory, and rallying back left Geneva with the ultimate “what if”. Still, there weren’t tears from the Vikings. Only reckoning.

And perspective.

“Our season was full of ups-and-downs, but we stuck through it with each other until the end,” Vikings senior forward Kelly Gordon said. “It’s always going to be hard, but as long as you’ve got your teammates, you can push through it.”

Geneva (19-11) took its early lumps against the Tigers (28-3), who advanced to face Wheaton North in the sectional final at 7:30 p.m.

Central was able to put Marian away in the late stages. The Rockets scored 22 points while holding the Hurricanes to just four in the final quarter.

Pryor scored nine points in the quarter while Kayla Ross excelled in transition and scored six points. Ross finished with 13 points on the night.

“Our pressure wore them down a bit and our girls did a great job,” Smith said. “In the fourth quarter we really turned the pressure up and we kept going. It was fun to watch, and we really played hard.”

Despite winning the program’s fifth straight regional championship, Geneva finished with less than 20 victories for the first time since the 2004-05 team went 13-14.

Gina Nolan, who coached those Vikings and remained on the bench through the 2010-11 season, has been a fixture at games since stepping away from the program to focus on her health. Sarah Meadows, the Vikings’ former longtime sophomore coach, largely has kept up the winning continuity in her two seasons at the helm.

GENOA – It took a while for the Burlington Central girls basketball team to find its rhythm but as each player settled in, the points soon followed.

It was a steady combination of Alison Colby working underneath the basket early combined with solid jumpshooting from Samantha Pryor that pushed the Rockets past Marian Central in Tuesday’s IHSA Class 3A Genoa-Kingston Sectional semifinal, 54-29.

The Rockets will face Sterling on Thursday in the sectional championship.

The Rockets found themselves tied at 12 apiece at the end of the first quarter with Marian Central after the

Hurricanes went on a 12-4 run to end the frame. But as the second quarter began, the Rockets took control.

“I thought we attacked their zone much better from the second quarter on,” Rockets coach Mark Smith said.

“They were really pressuring us up high and I thought we were a little more patient with our looks.”

Pryor came off the bench for the Rockets late in the first quarter and missed a buzzer-beater. She stayed in the game for the second, when she made her mark on the game.

The freshman knocked down three consecutive shots including a 3-pointer that punctuated a 9-4 run.

“I just wanted to help the team out and wanted to contribute,” Pryor said.

STC North’s Gianacakos becomes hot property Chase Gianacakos didn’t start playing football until arriving at St. Charles North High School. It’s looking increasingly likely that he’s going to make up for lost time long after his eligibility with the North Stars expires.

A junior offensive lineman at North, Gianacakos received his first two Division I scholarship offers over a 72-hour period, nabbing an offer from Kansas on Saturday and Toledo on Monday.

To say Gianacakos, who turned 17 Sunday, is becoming a hot property might be an understatement.

His recruitment is heating up so rapidly that he was visiting one Mid-American Conference program, Ball State, on Monday, when he learned from one of the Cardinals’ coaches about the Toledo offer. The coach had seen word of the Rockets’ offer to Gianacakos on social media before Giana-

“I was like ‘What? Wow,’ ” Gianacakos said.

Gianacakos’ name has gained traction in football recruiting circles after a pair of strong January showings at showcase events – a national combine in San Antonio, Texas and the Core 6 Showcase in Westmont. He ascended to a Rivals.com list of the top 30 Illinois recruits for the class of 2014.

Naturally, the weight room has been good to Gianacakos. After all, his parents, Rich and Stephanie, met in a weight room at the University of Illinois, where Rich was an O-lineman for the football team and Stephanie played volleyball.

An offensive tackle,

Gianacakos is up to about 6-foot-6, 286 pounds, 10 pounds heavier than his playing weight as a junior.

Gianacakos said he lifts at school and at home as much as he can, while juggling speed training at Nate’s Premium Athletes and technique training through Mike Jones at Deerfieldbased Core 6.

“I think a lot of schools are saying I have good, quick feet, I’m athletic for a big guy and I’ve just been working really hard to keep up my technique and keep getting better because I feel offensive line positions are a technical position,” Gianacakos said. “You can never get too much coaching with it.”

In addition to Ball State, Gianacakos already has visited Illinois, Michigan State and Boston College, with future visits planned for Northern Illinois, Northwestern and Missouri and potentially Minnesota, Duke

and Maryland.

Despite his parents’ Illini heritage, Gianacakos said his parents have encouraged him to carve out his own path if Champaign does not end up looking like his best bet.

He doesn’t feel compelled to limit his options to the midwest considering a worldly upbringing.

Because of his father’s job, Gianacakos lived internationally throughout his late grammar school and middle school years, residing in China, England, Spain and the Netherlands. Hence, the late start in football.

Strong academics and “great tradition” will be bigger pulls than geography, Gianacakos said.

“Those are probably the biggest things with me,” Gianacakos said. “I don’t mind traveling because I actually lived overseas for seven years so I don’t really mind going places or being in a different environment

because I’m just kind of used to it.”

At North, Gianacakos and his teammates are acclimating to a new head coach.

The school recently hired former Elk Grove defensive coordinator Rob Pomazak to succeed the retiring Mark Gould.

Gianacakos said he has spoken with Pomazak on the phone but hasn’t met him in person yet, which he expects to change soon.

“I’m really excited about him,” Gianacakos said. “He seems like a great guy. He had a great program going at Elk Grove, being defensive coordinator and all. I’m really excited for this coming season.”

And especially excited that it looks like it won’t be his last.

ELGIN – The Mooseheart boys basketball team played without two of its starters and only played “OK,” according to coach Ron Ahrens.

But it didn’t matter Tuesday night as the Red Ramblers dominated Faith Lutheran. 7440, in their postseason opener.

Things get more difficult tonight, when Mooseheart gets Westminster Christian at 7:30 p.m. in the semifinal round of the Class 1A Westminster Christian Regional.

“I’m sick to my stomach having to play them for a third time,” Ahrens said.

Mangisto Deng led the way with 20 points while Hameed Odenewu scored 18. Makur Puou added 12 for Mooseheart (22-5), which “didn’t have a lot of energy,” according to Ahrens.

Kevin Gbadebo and Peter Kurowski didn’t play for Mooseheart. Ahrens said one of the missing players was out for disciplinary reasons.

East (15-10) dropped a close one in nonconference play.

East and R-B were tied at 42 at the end of three quarters. Jake Asquini led the Saints with 18 points, all from 3-point land. Dom Adduci added 14 points and had four assists and Cole Gentry added 13 points and four assists for East.

The Cadets will face Minooka in a state quarterfinal at 11 a.m. Saturday, with potential semifinals (2 p.m.) and finals (6 p.m.) scheduled for later in the day.

The Cadets clinched the program’s first dual team sectional berth earlier this month, when 13 of 14 athletes advanced from the individual Naperville Central Regional, which Marmion won handily with a team score of 244.

Patrick has star qualities but she needs victories

By TRACEE HAMILTON The Washington Post Danica Patrick will be on the pole for Sunday's Daytona 500, the first woman to win the top spot in the sport's prestigious Opening Day event. It's a milestone for a woman in a sport almost entirely comprised of men.

Beyond that, what it means is unclear. To win the pole, you have to drive faster than anyone without crashing. You aren't driving in traffic, against competition and tire wear and fatigue.

You're just facing the clock.

Racing is much more than that.

Rubbin' is racin', as Robert Duvall taught us, but so is grudges and taps and drafting and the occasional display of pugilism in pit road. We may find Patrick

has arrived if, after a race, a fellow driver unhooks his netting, climbs out the window, flings off his helmet and punches her. I have a feeling she'll punch back.

Patrick is on the cusp of being the complete sports star: talent, good looks and a knack for self-promotion. That one she has in spades, and she's smart – that one matters a lot in the digital age. What she's missing, however, is crucial: victories.

Victories on big stages, dramatic victories, comeback victories.

Patrick can be a star based on her looks – the Anna Kournikova of racing – but if she wants to be a true star, she has to win.

She has an IndyCar win under her belt, but IndyCar does not have the fanbase of NASCAR. Poles on big stages are a step, but pole-winners aren't stars.

Garza sidelined for a week

Marmion • Senior • Wrestling Why Fisher was selected: Fisher capped a 4-0 run through the IHSA Class 3A state wrestling tournament with a state championship at 132 pounds.

Marmion senior wrestler George Fisher scored the only fall of Saturday’s Class 3A state wrestling finals, winning the 132-pound title by pinning Oak Park-River Forest’s Larry Early III in 1:45. The St. Charles Bank & Trust-Kane County Chronicle Athlete of the Week, Fisher captured his second state championship in three seasons. Chronicle sports reporter Kevin Druley caught up with Fisher (47-4), a Michigan recruit from St. Charles. The following is an edited transcript: You were a state champ as a sophomore and a runner-up last season. How is to be back on top of the podium?

It shows how far I’ve improved and everything compared to last year. After that loss, that’s all I thought about the whole entire

year. And it wasn’t that motivation of losing, it was more of that feeling after I lost that, ‘Well, I could have given a lot more out there but I didn’t.’ Now this time, that’s all I was thinking of. Because you know, win or lose, I’m going to go out there and I’m going to give it my all. And if I win, then I win. But if I lose, then at least I know that I gave it my all. And I mean, that was a huge improvement for me.

How do you celebrate this since the dual team tournament is still ahead?

It’s nice to have right now. I’m on cloud nine, especially with Johnny [Jimenez, the 3A champ at 120 and a fellow St. Charles resident]. But, I mean, now it’s a team goal. Now it’s to get us down to team state and to win a team state championship.

MESA, Ariz. – The Cubs’ hopes for a healthy, injuryfree Matt Garza have been dashed less than two weeks into spring training.

General manager Jed Hoyer said MRI results showed Garza suffered a mild strained lat, near his oblique, and will be sidelined one week until he is pain free, at which point he’ll resume throwing.

Garza suffered the injury Sunday during his first live batting practice session. He made it halfway through his 40 pitches when he felt something pull on his left side. Garza was checked out by the team trainer and walked off the field.

“We’re optimistic and it was certainly a positive read from our standpoint,” Hoyer said Tuesday at Fitch Park. “He looks great. I think his body looks different and certainly his arm is in great shape. He certainly worked his butt off this winter. I think he was a caged animal because he couldn’t do a lot for a long time. …

This has nothing to do with how he came into camp.”

Garza’s first Cactus League start also has been pushed back, and Hoyer was unsure how the injury would affect Garza’s readiness for the start of the season.

Castro said second baseman Darwin Barney winning a Gold Glove last year at second base “is good motivation for me.” Part of that will require better mental focus, which Castro said he wants and expects to eliminate this season.

“I know God gave me that [talent],” Castro said. “That’s why when I go to the Dominican I work hard every day on my defense. I want to be better. I want to be like Barney and win a Gold Glove.”

Castro wants to be a complete player, not only shining on defense but being an all-around hitter. He expects his power numbers to improve, too.

“I want to do everything, especially power, but steal bases, hit for average,” Castro said. “Last year I hit [.283], I can hit better than that. I think this year it’s going to be a good year.”

Stewart working on timing: Third baseman Ian Stewart’s timing at the plate still is coming back to him after a nagging left wrist injury, and then surgery, ended his 2012 season early.

Stewart played in only 55 games after Colorado traded him to the Cubs, hitting .201 with five home runs and 17 RBIs. “It kind of feels like last year, but I did have the surgery,” Stewart said. “But I’m a lot more confident in my telling you that I do feel really good.”

Manager Dale Sveum said Stewart is capable of hitting 15 to 25 home runs this year with 75 to 100 RBIs. Stewart said he’s capable of producing even more than that at the plate, but called it a good starting point. First, however, he’ll have to hold off infielder Luis Valbuena to secure the job. Valbuena took over at third after Stewart’s season ended early last year.

“I didn’t get a lot of time hitting on the field, so it’s always a little different the first few times you get back on the field and hit,” Stewart said. “I’m getting used to that, just getting outside and hitting. You face a guy throwing at you but you don’t really face a pitcher until either live [batting practice] or until games. I’ll still be interested in seeing where exactly I’m at when the games do start.”

Food for Thought: Understanding labels GATEHOUSE NEWS SERVICE When you’re scanning a restaurant menu or walking the grocery store aisles, do you know what many of the food terms really mean? What designates “local,” and what is the difference between organic and non-organic?

These terms and others are becoming staples on menus and in stores, and until recently few have been clearly defined.

Here are common food-related terms you’re sure to see at restaurants or supermarkets, according to the U.S. Farmers & Ranchers Alliance.

• Organic: The main difference between organic and non-organically grown foods is the production method – those who raise organically-grown food must follow a strict set of guidelines outlined by the U.S. Department of Agriculture.

The USDA organic label indicates that the food or other agricultural product has been produced through approved methods that integrate cultural, biological and mechanical practices that foster cycling of resources, promote ecological balance and conserve biodiversity.

Like many other value-added products, organic food can be more expensive because, in some cases, it costs more to produce. For example, organicallyraised pigs must be fed only organic feed produced without synthetic pesticides, and may not be given antibiotics. A common misconception is that the increased cost of organic food relates directly to its superior nutritional value, which is unproven.

Another common misconception about organic food production involves pesticide and fertilizer use. Organic farmers can choose from organic certified pesticides and fungicides, which are outlined by the USDA Certified Organic program. They can also use organic matter (livestock manure) for fertilizer.

• Local: Local food is grown (or raised) and harvested close to where it is sold.

It’s distributed a much shorter distance than is common in the conventional global industrial food system, which sustains our nation and world.

• Hormone-free: Hormones occur naturally in all farm animals, just as they do in humans – it’s a natural part of life, so no beef, pork, poultry or dairy products are “hormone-free.” When it comes to poultry raised in America, no hormones are ever used to promote growth, a common misconception.

Hormones are used in farm animals under the guidance of veterinarians and animal nutritionists and only given in targeted ways – in very low doses and at particular times in the animal’s life.

Easy Recipe: Spinach Apple Salad with Toasted Walnuts Ingredients: • 2 Opal apples • 5 ounces baby spinach • 1/3 cup dried tart cherries • 3 tablespoons extra virgin olive oil • 2 tablespoons white balsamic vinegar • 2 teaspoons fresh thyme (or 1/2 teaspoon dried thyme, crushed) • 1 teaspoon lemon zest, freshly grated • Salt to taste • Ground pepper to taste • 1/3 cup (about 2 ounces) goat cheese, crumbled • 1/2 cup chopped walnuts, toasted

Directions: 1. Core apples, and cut into thin slices (about 16 per apple).

2. Place spinach in a large bowl; remove long stems and any bruised leaves.

3. Add cherries and half of apples and set aside.

4. In a small bowl, whisk together olive oil, vinegar, thyme, lemon zest, salt and ground pepper to taste.

5. Toss spinach, apples and cherries with just enough dressing to coat.

6. Top with remaining sliced apples, goat cheese and toasted walnuts. – Family Features

Because of this, I find myself driving more often than I should.

One friend attends a weekly meeting with me, and we’re supposed to take turns driving each other every other week. But somehow I end up at the wheel more often. I’d hate to start writing down our outings, but I’m beginning to feel used.

Jury still out on epidural injections for sciatica pain Dear Doctor K: I have terrible pain from sciatica. Will epidural injections help?

Dear Reader: I wish I had a definite and non-controversial answer. But as with so many areas of medicine, not every study of that question comes up with the same answer. Some say “yes” and some say “no” – for the average patient in the study.

Sciatica is a persistent aching or burning pain felt along the sciatic nerve. The two sciatic nerves are the longest nerves in the body. They run from the lower back down through the buttocks and into each of the lower legs.

The pain of sciatica can be severe.

It can go away on its own, but for many people, sciatica is a chronic condition that keeps coming back.

Sciatica occurs when the sciatic nerve is pinched, irritated or injured. Inflammation, arthritis or a displaced disk in the lower spine are often to blame. (I’ve put an illustration showing the common causes of sciatica on my website, AskDoctorK.com.)

Doctors commonly treat sciatica with epidural injections into the spine. (The word “epidural” refers to a particular area in the spine.) The injections contain a steroid, which reduces inflammation. The injections can also contain a long-lasting painkiller.

ASK DOCTOR K Anthony L. Komaroff The different causes of sciatica may be one reason that studies come to different conclusions.

If a person’s sciatica is caused by inflammation rather than by arthritis, it may be more successfully treated by steroids – since the main effect of steroids is to reduce inflammation.

The best kind of study for any treatment procedure, like an injection of medicines, is a randomized trial that includes a sham procedure.

In this kind of study, every person gets an injection but only some people, chosen at random, get an injection of the real medicine; the rest get just a placebo injected or nothing injected (a sham procedure).

One recent study found that there was only a short-term (onemonth) relief of symptoms for most patients who got any relief (and not all did).

Another large recent study analyzed results from 23 previous studies comparing steroid injections to placebo (sham) injections.

They found that for some people, an epidural injection gave good

relief from leg pain (but not back pain) for several months. But for most people, the benefit was quite small. In addition, the pain relief did not last; after one year, there was no difference in pain between the sham and treatment groups.

Given the severity of your sciatica pain, it might be worth trying an epidural injection. But bear in mind that this treatment may offer only a small and shortlasting benefit.

In addition, you may have heard of the recent national outbreak of meningitis that was caused by epidural injections of steroids that were contaminated with fungus.

This was a very unusual, but very serious, complication of the treatment. Some people might have had only brief or no pain relief. For them, the treatment was worse than the disease.

Talk to your doctor about whether simpler treatments such as exercises, physical therapy, compresses, painkilling medicines, chiropractic manipulation, massage, yoga or acupuncture might be worth considering.

I’m not brilliant, but I’m told by my counselor that I have above-average intelligence and should have little problem earning a college degree.

Both of my parents are professionals.

My father is a college professor, and my mother is an attorney.

Both stress getting top grades.

This semester I am getting two A’s and four B’s. I’m not a valedictorian candidate, but my grades are good, and I’m proud of them.

I’m also a good softball player. I pitch and play centerfield.

My parents, however, expect me to average four A’s and two B’s, so they are unhappy with my grades and are threatening to keep me off the team so I can spend more time on my studies.

Even if I spent much more time studying, I doubt seriously that my B’s would become A’s.

I would be crushed if they made me quit the team.

At the bridge table, patience and persistence are excellent. If you are perspiring, the air-conditioning or heating system must be on the blink.

How is patience a virtue in this deal? South is in four hearts.

West leads his singleton diamond. East overtakes with his ace and continues with the king, which South ruffs with the heart king. What happens after that?

South made a textbook triplejump overcall. North was not sure if game would make, but since it could have been laydown, he sensibly raised to four hearts.

South has three aces to lose.

To make his contract, he must not concede a second trump trick.

Note that East’s winning the first trick with his ace and then leading the king were suit-preference signals for spades.

What will happen depends on West’s patience. Since he knows East has the spade ace, there will be a temptation to overruff with the heart ace and shift to a spade.

East will win with his ace and lead another diamond, but South will ruff high, draw trumps in two more rounds, and claim.

West must be patient, discarding at trick two.

South will continue with a high trump, but West wins and puts his partner on lead in spades. When East plays a diamond, it promotes a second trump trick for West. South has only two high trumps left, and West still holds the nine and the three.
