Woman, 78, dies in Route 38 collision

By ASHLEY RHODEBECK arhodebeck@shawmedia.com ELBURN – A 78-year-old Kaneville woman died Tuesday after a collision with a truck on Route 38 west of Elburn, Kane County sheriff’s officials said.

Lt. Pat Gengler said in a news release that Lorella Huff of the 46W500 block of Main Street was traveling north on Francis Road and didn’t stop at the stop sign for Route 38.

Her 1995 Toyota Camry reportedly entered the intersection and, about 11:45 a.m., hit a 2012 Hino box truck traveling west on Route 38, which did not have a stop sign at that intersection.

Both vehicles stopped west of Francis Road. The truck faced east on Route 38, and the car was in a ditch facing south.

jured, Gengler said. Huff was pronounced dead at the scene.

They were the sole occupants of their vehicles, Gengler

said.

Route 38 between Meredith Road and Route 47 was closed until 3:30 p.m., Gengler said.

The closure affected bus routes in Kaneland School District 302, Superintendent Jeff Schuler said. The transportation department prepared for detours because it learned of the road closure in advance of dismissal time.

Kane County deputies and members of the Kane County Accident Reconstruction Team are investigating the crash. Gengler said it is not known whether factors such as weather, drugs and alcohol contributed to the accident.

No tickets have been issued, he said.

An ambulance and fire truck from the Elburn and Countryside Fire Protection District also responded to the scene.

Three file as write-in candidates for 7th Ward

In December, no one filed a nomination petition for the 7th Ward, where Alderman Dawn Tenuta is not running for reelection.

Drew McFadden, 43, on Monday filed his paperwork with Batavia City Clerk Heidi

Wetzel. Thursday is the deadline to file as a write-in candidate.

“I think I can make a difference,” said McFadden, founder of WindmillNext, a digital marketing agency.

McFadden said the deadline to file nominating petitions had already passed by the time he decided to run for the seat.

McFadden said one of his goals is to continue smart development in the city’s downtown and along the Randall Road

corridor.

“I want to continue to make Batavia a great place to raise a family,” he said.

Pat Purcell on Friday also filed as a write-in candidate for the 7th Ward seat. Purcell could not be reached for comment.

Steve Holland has also filed as a write-in candidate. He was disciplined in November by the Illinois Department of Financial and Professional Regulation.

The state in November refused to renew Holland’s real estate broker license for “his failure to perform on a guaranteed sales plan and engaging in dishonorable, unethical, or unprofessional conduct of a character likely to deceive, defraud, or harm the public,” according to a report from the Illinois Department of Financial and Professional Regulation.

Attempts to reach Holland for comment have been unsuccessful.

The disease is the most common cancer in children, representing 23 percent of cancer diagnoses among children younger than 15, according to the National Cancer Institute. It occurs in about one of every 29,000 children in the United States each year.

NORTH AURORA – Eleven-year-old Max Williams likes to spend his free time playing basketball or with his remote control helicopters. In other words, he enjoys acting like a kid.

Max was diagnosed with acute lymphoblastic leukemia when he was 3 years old.

After 3½ years of chemotherapy and five years of followup, he is considered cured.

To mark the milestone, a blood drive for Lifesource will be from 11 a.m. to 5 p.m.

Feb. 17 at Funway Ultimate Entertainment Center, 1335 S. River St., Batavia. During his treatment, Max received more than 16 blood and platelet transfusions.

“It’s something we wanted to do to give back to Lifesource and to bring awareness to the community,” said his mother, Sara Williams.

Those who plan to donate blood that day should call Lifesource at 877-543-3768.

To register online at www. lifesource.org, use reference group code PHIL. Max, a student at Immanuel Lutheran School in Batavia, doesn’t remember receiving chemotherapy.

“I remember some of the doctors coming in to play basketball with us,” he said.

Max doesn’t hesitate when asked about the best part of not having leukemia.

The family is treating the Feb. 17 blood drive as a celebration, which is why it is at Funway.

“It’s someplace everybody knows, and it’s fun and happy,” Sara Williams said.

In conjunction with the blood drive, there will be a fundraiser for the Wilmettebased Leukemia Research Foundation. The Williamses are friends of Diana and

Miguel Orjuela of Batavia, whose 2½-year-old son, Nicholas, died of leukemia in October 2003.

The couple have created a chapter called “Little Lefty” – Nicholas was left-handed – to raise money for Leukemia Research Foundation.

“Any time we can help to raise funds and awareness is a plus,” said Diana Orjuela, Nicholas’ mother, who also is president of the Leukemia Research Foundation’s executive committee.

The Leukemia Research Foundation provides research grants to scientists around the world and conducts educational and support programs for patients, family members, caregivers and medical professionals.

“I want to make sure people know about the foundation,” Orjuela said.

Max has a message to children diagnosed with leukemia and their families.

“I would say, ‘Don’t worry. I made it through,’ ” Max said.

Memorial service to honor Maple Park vet

By AL LAGATTOLLA alagattolla@shawmedia.com Rita Campbell said her twin brother, Ralph Umbdenstock, would make it a point to show returning soldiers how much he appreciated their efforts.

She said Umbdenstock, a U.S. Air Force veteran who served in the Vietnam War, knew what it was like to come home without a hero’s welcome.

“He had a really good attitude,” Campbell said. “He always Ralph tried really hard Umbdento see the posi- stock tive, and I think Ralph really did try to be an example to other people.”

Umbdenstock died Dec. 31 at the age of 61. He was a 41year member of Maple Park American Legion Post 312 and a past post commander. He had moved to Texas, and Campbell said there were many in the Maple Park area who wanted to honor Umbdenstock. Friends and family are invited to gather from 1:30 to 4:30 p.m. Sunday at the legion, 203 Main St., Maple

“He talked about it,” she said. “At the time, just like when 9/11 happened, people got fired up about certain things.

And there was controversy about the Vietnam War. Some people thought it was horrible and wrong that we were there. … After the fact, I don’t think [those who served] were welcomed home exactly like the World War II vets.”

She was born April 20, 1949, in Omaha, the daughter of Henry and Loretta (nee Ludwig) Krapfl. She was united in marriage to Bradley Samuels on July 17, 1991, in Geneva.

After graduating, Marj married Robert I. Wiegand in 1956. Marj and Robert grew up as next door neighbors and lived next to each other from the time Marj was born. After retiring from nursing, Marguerite graduated from College of DuPage with a degree in interior design. She was an avid bridge player, knowledgeable history buff and lover of nature. She found great joy in spending time with family and friends.

Marguerite is survived by her daughters, Karen (John) McConnaughay of St. Charles, Kimberly (Clay) Shaw of St. Charles and Kristine (Dan) Tennant of Batavia; son, Kevin of Colorado; grandchildren, Kate and Mitch Radman, Courtney and Jake Finley, Garrett Steve, Coby Shaw, Casey Shaw, Kendra and Don Seymour and Jack Wiegand; great-grandchildren, Abigail Radman, Elizabeth Marguerite Radman and Kiley Seymour; and many other dear relatives. She will be greatly missed by all those whose lives she touched.

BATAVIA – With a few adjustments, aldermen on the Batavia City Council City Services Committee on Tuesday said they want to see the Peapod half marathon continue through the city.

“I think the half marathon is a great opportunity for Batavia,” 5th Ward Alderman Eldon Frydendall said. “We have to promote Batavia as much as we can.”

Assistant City Administrator Jason Bajor had recommended the race, which will be Aug. 25, take place as much as possible on the Fox River Trail.

Mayor Jeff Schielke had said he heard complaints about people who couldn’t get to church because of road closures associated with last year’s race.

“Nobody is saying that this event is not valuable,” Bajor told aldermen. “This is all about a balancing act.”

The Rev. Steven Srock, senior pastor at Bethany Lutheran Church in Batavia, said the race creates problems for churchgoers.

“It is extremely disruptive to a Sunday schedule,” he told aldermen. “Parking on the streets is an issue. I’ve had complaints from parishioners that they can’t get out of their driveways because the streets are blocked.”

But 4th Ward Alderman Jim Volk, chairman of the City Services Committee, said slight changes could be made to avoid that problem.

“Let’s try to avoid going on or crossing Main Street,” he said, adding Bajor could work with the race organizers and the Batavia Ministerial Association in addressing the issues.

Several race supporters addressed aldermen.

“We love the spectators,” said Bob Miller of Bartlett, who has participated in the race. “I think the city should give it more support.”

Village to explore legalizing video gambling

By AL LAGATTOLLA alagattolla@shawmedia.com ELBURN – Noting that video gambling machines are allowed in nearby establishments, village officials Monday opened the door to the possibility of legalizing them in Elburn.

Sugar Grove recently allowed video gaming, although the village will have an advisory referendum on its ballot in April.

The village adopted an ordinance prohibiting video gaming in 2009, but trustees said the rules were not established at that Bill Grabarek time. Jeff Walter was among the trustees who voted to ban gambling in 2009, but he said he has been approached about

Walter pointed out that Blackberry Inn appears to have done well, adding that he has not “seen any gang wars at Blackberry Inn,” but cars in the establishment’s parking lot.

“A dollar spent in a video gambling machine doesn’t appear from nowhere,” said Frasz, noting it might be money that might have been spent at a different establishment.

“It doesn’t make money. It redistributes it.”

“I am against it,” he added.

“But the county as a whole approved it.”

Village President Dave Anderson said the topic will be brought back for discussion at next week’s Committee of the Whole meeting, which will be Monday at Village Hall.

It has been 15 years since the federal government was legally obliged – but failed – to begin accepting waste from the country’s nuclear power plants. It has been four years since President Obama zeroed out funds for a permanent geologic repository at Yucca Mountain, Nev., eliminating hope that the government would live up to its obligation anytime soon. And, according to the Obama administration’s new strategy for dealing with nuclear waste, it will be another 35 years until the government opens a permanent repository at a different site, location as yet unknown.

Even if the government meets its new timetable, that adds up to 50 years of delay, a notin-my-backyard nightmare that the country is only part way through.

More than 68,000 metric tons of nuclear waste have accumulated next to U.S. reactors, which weren’t designed for long-term storage, and that figure is increasing by about 2,000 metric tons every year. Even decommissioned nuclear facilities require gates and guards to protect the waste, a ridiculous misuse of land and money. Meanwhile, consumers financing a federal waste disposal fund through their electricity bills wonder what they’ve been paying for, and the federal government’s financial liability for failing to collect the waste, already in the billions, continues to mount.

The situation is safe enough, but it could be safer, and it’s inexcusably expensive.

Since the president helped kill the Yucca project, his administration has borne

a particular responsibility to devise a workable way to clean up this mess.

Last month the Energy Department finally released its proposal. It is a reasonable plan for post-Yucca policymaking that nevertheless relies on a big assumption – that someplace in the country will volunteer to host some waste.

The administration wants to build at least two centralized, interim storage facilities where waste could sit before its eventual transfer to a permanent repository. The first, to open by 2021, would be a pilot storage facility designed to take waste from decommissioned nuclear sites. The second would open by 2025; in combination, these facilities would draw down the amount of waste stored at current and decommissioned reactor sites. When the anticipated permanent repository comes online – supposedly by 2048 – the waste would move there.

Every step, the administration insists, must be “consent-based,” with localities accepting waste facilities in return for their economic benefits and perhaps some additional compensation.

Congress tried forcing Nevada to take the country’s waste; the thinking goes, this time, that the government should try recruitment rather than compulsion. We are skeptical that many localities would volunteer to host waste facilities, particularly the permanent repository, no matter the economic benefits.

But perhaps the administration’s staged approach might be a way to convince communities, with each step building confidence that this material can be stored safely.

Assembly focuses on suicide prevention

By NICOLE WESKERNA nweskerna@shawmedia.com BATAVIA – Blythe Miller said if she knew as much about suicide prevention as she does today, her daughter would be alive.

Quincee Ariel Barnes-Miller would have been a Batavia High School senior this year.

She died because of suicide her sophomore year.

Miller spoke about her experience Tuesday at the Suicide Awareness Community Assembly at Batavia High School.

“Many never seek help because of the stigma and shame,” she said. “We need to change negative attitudes and demonstrate that people with mental illness are everyday people leading meaningful lives.”

She was joined by Donna Wagner, another parent who lost a child to suicide, a suicide survivor and a representative from Suicide Prevention Services in Batavia. The assembly was organized by the Future Educators Association in an effort to raise awareness about

suicide and break the stigma that surrounds it.

Wagner, who lost her son, Dylan, when he was 15, said she never would have described her son as depressed, sad or suicidal. She said he had talked to friends about being depressed and wanting to hurt himself, and she was sad her son didn’t trust her enough to tell her.

She encouraged those at the assembly to tell someone if they know people who want to hurt themselves.

“If you notice a change in a friend, or someone tells you they are in so much pain, or are depressed or wants to hurt themselves, tell someone,” she said. “There are people who care. Our family lives with the

pain of Dylan’s suicide every day.”

Rachel Hathaway, 17, who graduated early from Batavia High School in January, described how she carefully hid her depression and suicidal thoughts from family and friends. She lost interest in school and soccer and her sleep habits drastically changed. She said small problems that she usually would have brushed aside suddenly felt like huge hurdles.

“I was stuck inside a world that I absolutely hated, and I just wanted to be left alone,” she said.

To cope, she started to cut herself and covered her scars with jewelry, clothing and makeup. She even set a date for when she planned to commit suicide. Hathaway said she attended an Operation Snowball retreat and decided to open up.

“It was the hardest and best choice I ever made,” she said.

She eventually contacted Suicide Prevention Services and through weekly counseling, she learned how to step back from a situation before it

escalates. She said some days are more of a struggle than others, and it’s still a work in progress.

“I can’t take on my problems alone,” she said. “I had depression, but that doesn’t define me.”

Elementary school mulls therapeutic playground

By NICOLE WESKERNA nweskerna@shawmedia.com ELBURN – Kaneland School District 302 officials are in the design stages of building a therapeutic playground with sensory elements at Blackberry Creek Elementary School.

Fran Eggleston, director of special services at Blackberry Creek, said the district is pursuing state and federal grants to build the playground for children in the school’s special-education program. She said there’s a need for a therapeutic playground for younger stu dents.

Eggleston said she got input from early-childhood education teachers on which elements to include in the playground, which she estimated will cost about $150,000.

Ideas include a small bike path with different types of

surfaces, such as pebbles and bricks; something that spins so students can work on muscle and motor control; and a raised sand table, making it accessible to children who use wheelchairs.

“There is a need for a playground that’s specifically designed for our little kids,” Eggleston said. “We’re taking it one step further, making sure the equipment we’re looking for can meet therapeutic needs, as well.”

She said children in the early-childhood education program are special-needs children for a variety of reasons, including autism, cognitive impairment or speech impediments. The school serves about 60 children ages 3 to 5.

She said district leaders haven’t decided whether to phase in equipment over several years or to build it all at once. The district is pursuing an IDEA grant through

the Illinois State Board of Education. The project still needs school board approval, but Eggleston said she hopes construction will start as soon as spring. If that’s the case, she said the playground would be ready as early as the next school year.

The existing playground would remain, she said, with the addition of the new equipment that is more age-appropriate, such as being lower to the ground and smaller.

Eggleston said school officials also are looking at playground equipment that includes sensory panels, allowing children to explore tactile shapes, textures and colors.

“We’re certainly looking for equipment that addresses the sensory processing needs our kids have, and find equipment that addresses the motor planning deficits that some of our children have,” Eggleston said.

Joyful night for STC

By KEVIN DRULEY kdruley@shawmedia.com GLEN ELLYN – St. Charles co-op girls gymnasts held back joyous tears for a crush of photo-ops late Tuesday night.

Official word of the team’s victory at the Glenbard West Sectional elicited plenty of emotion, even from a group that made advancing to the state meet a goal from the first day of workouts.

St. Charles narrowly earned the sectional’s automatic berth to the Feb. 15and 16 state meet at Palatine, edging the host Hilltoppers 143.775 to 143.3.

“We had no idea how close it was,” said freshman Rachel Dugan, a St. Charles East student. “When we heard them announce our name, oh my gosh, it was just

the best feeling in the world.”

Geneva (142.875) placed third, and remains in the hunt for one of four at-large state bids, to be determined by week’s end.

The Vikings’ Dominique Brognia (all-around, floor exercise) and Ashley Puff (allaround, vault, floor) clinched individual state berths.

Only sectionals at Fremd – held Monday – and Glenbard West are in the books.

Competitions at Hinsdale Central (today) and Stevenson (Thursday) remain, creating a waiting period that’s far longer than the brief delay between the time a gymnast finishes her routine and the judges award a score.

In addition to the four at-large team berths in the balance, 12 at-large spots for each individual event and the all-around must be

decided.

There’s no such suspense for St. Charles, whose coach, Amy Lill, joked she finally could get a good night’s rest Tuesday. The co-op knows where it will be in two weekends after capturing its first sectional crown since 2008.

“We kind of knew we had to step up our momentum and just pull it together, because we all wanted it so much. I think the want and the crave for it just really brought our team together,” said Jesi Ortiz, a St. Charles North senior. “I want to cry and I feel awesome and it’s awesome for my senior year, just knowing that my whole team is going to be there.”

St. Charles was especially steeled in its performance considering the recent partial ACL tear that ended teammate

Sidney Copeland’s season.

Dugan’s fourth-place score in the all-around (36.6) helped keep the team afloat, as it was sandwiched between Brognia (third, 36.875) and Puff (fifth, 35.95), who advanced to state in that discipline.

None of Batavia’s sectional contingent – senior all-arounder Sarah Ganster and young vault competitors Megan McGee (freshman) and Courtney Glassman (sophomore) – finished in the top five of their respective events.

Batavia coach Taryn Boyce still spoke optimistically of the season, and not just because she had returned to the same gym where the Bulldogs won a sectional in 2007.

The Rockets responded with a 13-2 run to blow the game open. Colby scored three times down low to help start the scoring spree and back-up post player Becca Gerke, a six-foot freshman, showed she also had a nice touch down low with a pair of baskets to finish it off.

“I thought Alison had one of her best games, finishing strong at the basket,” Burlington Central coach Mark Smith said. “We’ve been working on that because she’s a pretty good player and so is Becca. I thought they did a nice job getting the ball inside to them.”

Gerke finished with 8 points and four rebounds and Holt contributed 8 points and

seven rebounds to the winning effort, helping the Rockets dominate the glass.

“We’ve got to work on boxouts because we’re not the tallest team,” Smith said. “I thought we were aggressive going at the boards and I think the last two or three games that’s really paid off. That was an impressive job.”

Burlington Central had 39 rebounds compared with just 15 for North.

“They had to have 15-20 offensive boards,“ St. Charles North Colleen Backer said of the Rockets. “We just weren’t blocking out. We weren’t finding a body. We weren’t doing a lot of the little things that are big. And a lot of that is not skill -- that’s effort.”

Overall, Backer said she

was not pleased with the effort by the North Stars, particularly on the defensive end.

“I don’t believe we’re near the team that you saw this evening and I don’t believe our team does, either,” Backer said. “I have to believe that we’re going to take this experience tonight, reflect, learn from it, and really get fired up.”

Colby was fired up about the future of the Rockets, who have just two seniors and one junior on the roster.

“I think we’re coming along great with being young and all,” she said.

“We’re really adapting to the older teams. We’re matching the competition and we just need to bring it into post-season.”

Geneva led after the first two rotations, executing arguably its best two events, the vault and floor exercise.

The Vikings nearly carried a one-point edge on the host Hilltoppers at that stage – 73.575-72.725 – with York, St. Charles and the DeKalbSycamore co-op no more than 3.7 points off the pace.

St. Charles finished with the same two events, and wound up a narrow second overall in the vault and first in floor.

In January, the co-op tallied a program-best 146.8 team score, surpassing its previous-best score of 146.2 from 1998, one year after Lill graduated from St. Charles High.

After struggling on the beam at times during the regular season, Geneva counted zero falls in region-

als, when the host Vikings registered a program-best team score of 146.275.

In the week entering competition, Geneva coach Kim Hostman recruited several students to sit in the stands and simulate a crowd when the Vikings practiced beam.

While there wasn’t heckling, the mood – and room – were anything but stoic.

Students moved about, cheered and talked.

Eventually, Geneva felt almost as comfortable at Glenbard West as its home digs, the Mack Olson gym.

Sectionals marked the team’s first appearance here this season, but the Hilltoppers’ home is well known to many Vikings from past winters.

Warm-ups allowed athletes to get reacquainted, which is an important concession.

BURLINGTON – Less than 30 seconds into Tuesday’s non-conference girls basketball game at Burlington Central High School, Alison Colby scored with her left hand in the low post to give the Rockets a quick lead. That was how things would go all night, as visiting St. Charles North had a lot of trouble down in the blocks in a 53-32 loss.

Colby, a six-foot sophomore, scored 16 points and grabbed 10 rebounds.

“Normally, we’re really good at guard play and 3-pointers,” Colby said. “But tonight, my teammates were seeing the open passes and they were giving it to me and

I just focused on finishing.”

It was actually a trio of 3-pointers that helped the Rockets (23-4) gain their initial separation from the North Stars (8-18) late in the first quarter. Freshman Shelby Holt hit the first one from the left baseline and classmate Kayla Ross connected from the opposite corner before senior Camille Dela Cruz got in the score book with a 3 from the right wing to put Burlington Central up 17-9.

North trailed 26-17 at the half and pulled to within 7 points early in the third quarter when 5-10 sophomore Nicole Davidson finished off a press break. With 11 points, Davidson was the only North Star to finish in double fig-

That’s exactly what happened, but in contrary fashion to what most would have envisioned.

The surging Kaneland boys basketball team had its sevengame winning streak snapped by lightly regarded West Chicago, 54-43, in a game that wasn’t that close for most of the second half.

Kaneland (13-7) trailed by five points at halftime before West Chicago (5-16) took control in the third quarter.

Knights coach Brian Johnson urged his players to go up stronger around the rim on multiple occasions as Kaneland struggled

to convert near the basket.

“That’s something we’ve kind of had to deal with all year, just finishing strong,” Johnson said. “We’re getting in there, we’re just not always going up as hard as we can.

That’s something we have to grow from and learn from.

“West Chicago’s obviously used to a very physical conference against some very, very elite teams, the Glenbard Wests and the West Auroras of the world, so we have to realize they’re not going to come in here and look at our record and be intimidated, because they see [good teams] every single night.”

Senior forward Matt Limbrunner – the Knights’ top scorer on the season – took “a shot to the ribs” early in the game, Johnson said, and was held scoreless in the first half before finishing with eight points.

“It was a zone, and they had two guys on him most of the night, so it was tough for him,” Kaneland junior Ty Carlson said. “But Matt’s a great player. He’ll come back Friday [against DeKalb] and have a great game.”

Meanwhile, the Wildcats’ goto guy, John Konchar, scored in just about every fashion possible. The versatile, 6-foot-4 forward had 24 points and eight rebounds.

The Knights are often undersized but usually have more success compensating with scrappy defense. That wasn’t the case Tuesday, against Konchar in particular.

“He’d be the tallest player on our team so we’re throwing a kid like Dan Miller at him, who works hard, and then to give Dan a break, we put Drew (David) on him, and Drew’s

5-11, and he’s 6-4,” Johnson said. “I thought Drew did a nice job, he was physical with him, but once he gets in the paint, he’s pretty hard to [stop].”

A spinning, three-point play

by Konchar gave the Wildcats a 33-19 lead with 4:22 to play in the third quarter. West Chicago increased its lead to 42-26 going into the fourth before the Knights’ offense warmed up, too late to make a difference.

West Chicago coach Bill Recchia wasn’t overly surprised by his team’s emphatic win, no matter how the records look.

“Our record is not indicative of the type of basketball team that we are,” Recchia said. “ …

Of those 16 losses, four of them are in overtime or double overtime. Five of those losses we got beat, handily, we should have gotten beat, the other ones, we were in every single ballgame.”

John Pruett and Carlson scored nine points apiece to pace Kaneland, while Miller and Limbrunner each had eight. Sophomore guard Connor Fedderly hit a pair of 3-pointers off the bench for the Knights in the fourth quarter.

The Knights will try to brush off the nonconference setback and refocus on the Northern Illinois Big 12 East race. Kaneland can clinch at least a share of the title with a win against the Barbs on Friday.

“We have a great opportunity on Friday for senior night to honor Dan and Matt, and hopefully go out with a bang,” Johnson said. “There’s a lot on the line Friday night for us and the goal is to come out with a little more energy than we had tonight, and execute a little bit better.”

Timberwolves struggle with Mooseheart’s towering trio

The Timberwolves had trouble with Mooseheart’s trio of South Sudanese giants in a 75-39 Ramblers win Tuesday night.

A week after being notified by the IHSA that the school’s probation has been lifted, the Ramblers had little trouble with a Indian Creek squad that coach Ron Ahrens thinks is as good defensively as any his team has faced all season.

“On Friday night they [Indian Creek] only gave up 39 points to the number four ranked team in the state,” Ahrens said. “I’m really happy with our offense. Tonight, it was the Mak and Manny show. When Manny hits four 3s and doesn’t miss in that first half that makes a big difference and opens up the middle for us.”

Deng and Puou worked inside and out throughout the first half as Mooseheart raced out to a 39-20 halftime lead.

Deng was a perfect 4 for 4

from 3-point range in the first half to lead the Ramblers with 17 points at the break. Puou wasn’t far behind Deng with 14 points on a mixture of layups and jump hooks.

It was Puou’s start to the second half that allowed the Ramblers to pull away as the 6-foot-10 junior blocked the first four Indian Creek shots of the half. Mooseheart (17-5) scored on each of the possessions after Puou blocks as the Ramblers went on a 10-1 run at the start of the third quarter.

“We came out in the second half with four blocked shots and we scored off every one of them,” Ahrens said. “I’ve said it all year: If we can get our defense to set up our offense, we’re going to be tough.

We’re getting better at the right time.”

Despite the noticeable size difference, Indian Creek (1310) battled, pulling to within 29-18 with 3:11 to go in the second quarter after back-to-back baskets from 6-foot-9 center Garrison Govig.

Indian Creek coach Joe Piekarz was pleased with the Timberwolves defense in the first half, considering the size difference.

“I thought we played really well defensively in the first half,” Piekarz said. “The shots they were making were

contested and we were getting to our rotations. When you have a team like that that’s hot, even if they are

contested, they are going to knock those down.”

AURORA – The Rosary girls basketball team stormed back from an eight-point deficit going into the fourth quarter Tuesday to rally for a 56-51 win against Plainfield Central in the Royals’ regular-season finale.

Rosary coach Jessie Wilcox said her team wreaked defensive havoc from about the 6 minute mark to the 4 minute mark of the fourth quarter. “[Karly Tate] got like three, long-court pass interceptions and took them in for layups within that stretch right there, and Quincy Kellett hit some big free throws for us down the line,” Wilcox said.

Tate led Rosary (15-10) with 13 points and Rachel Choice added 11.

Wilcox said it was a key win heading into regionals.

“It was good because it just brings us momentum,” Wilcox said. “If we would have lost tonight it would have been hard to fight back, especially with a tough schedule ahead of us [in regionals].”

Marmion junior wrestler Anthony Bosco might well be joining uncharted territory as the latest St. Charles Bank & Trust-Kane County Chronicle Athlete of the Week. Bosco spent just 6:33 competing this week, as he notched falls in 11 seconds (quarterfinals) and 22 seconds (semifinals) before defeating Batavia freshman Michael Doranski for the regional title by 15-5 major decision Saturday. Bosco, a St. Charles resident, secured the first of the Cadets’ individual championships as Marmion also won a team regional title. Chronicle sports reporter Kevin Druley recently spoke with Bosco about his tournament. The following is an edited transcript:

NORTHERN ILLINOIS FOOTBALL

What allowed you to be so efficient in the first two bouts?

Those first two bouts, I would kind of shoot and they would leave their arms hanging, so it was easy to get my hip in and put them on their backs. In finals [Doranski] did a good job trying to stay in position on my wrists. Trying to slow me down, tie me up.

Because it’s your style to be aggressive, right?

It’s definitely how I’m trained is to move forward the whole match, bang him. Just hand-fight the whole match, wear him down and just try and work to my offense.

Talk about the St. Charles connection on the team. There’s you and so many guys from there. [George] Fisher, [Johnny] Jimenez. ...

Definitely, guys like George and Johnny are some of the top wrestlers in not the state, but the country. To be able to feed off them in the practice room, their leadership it definitely helps get the team going.

Blake Holder was never committed to Dave Doeren, or the old Northern Illinois coaching staff.

Holder, a 6-2, 190-pound receiver from Streamwood who gave a verbal commitment to the Huskies back in June, admits he thought about opening up his recruiting when Doeren took the North Carolina State job the day after winning his second consecutive Mid-American Conference championship.

There was also the fact Holder also saw the coach who recruited him, Ryan Nielsen, and wide receivers coach Frisman Jackson leave DeKalb to join Doeren in Raleigh, N.C. Holder said he was impressed with Carey after taking a visit to NIU in December.

“I committed to Northern Illinois University as a school, not the coaches,” Holder said. “I knew that was the school I wanted to go to regardless of the coaches. I wanted to stay, and once I met [Carey] I knew I wanted to stay because he’s a great guy.”

NIU lands Ohio runningback Northern Illinois may have just landed a highly touted runningback prospect.

Copley (Ohio) football coach Ron Viscounte told the Daily Chronicle this afternoon that Copley’s Aregeros Turner has verbally committed to NIU. Rivals rates Turner as a three-star prospect, and he also had offers from Cincinnati, Kentucky, Tennessee, Illinois, Purdue and Washington, according to the site.

According to Rivals, Turner decommitted from Cincinnati back in December when Butch Jones took the Tennessee job. He’s listed at 5-11, 180 pounds. a semester early and will transition to linebacker, said it wasn’t easy when he first heard the news of Doeren leaving. However, for Folliard, there wasn’t too much of a change, with Carey being promoted. It also helped that linebackers coach Kevin Kane is still part of the staff.

“First day [without Doeren] I was pretty scared.

When I first heard about it, I was hyperventilating, stuff like that,” Folliard

said. “But there’s no real change for me.”

For Carey, it’s been a busy, busy couple of months. He had to prepare for the Orange Bowl, where he also handled play-calling duties. There was also the job of putting together a coaching staff, and then recruiting. To Carey, this time of year is all about time management, when coaches are spending hour after hour either on the road or at an airport.

“You’ve got to use all the time that you have in the day because a lot of it’s eaten up in travel,” he said.

While much of the recruiting class has stayed in tact since the coaching change, there have been some new verbals, and players who have decommitted, after Doeren left.

Jerseyville Jersey quarterback Mitch Kimble and St. Louis wide receiver Corey Winfield committed to NIU over the summer, but have pulled theirs back and are now headed to Syracuse, according to Scout.com. Lincoln-Way East senior quarterback Tom Fuessel re-opened his recruiting just before Doeren left for N.C. State and is now verbally committed to Northwestern.

State Street Diner adds Mexican flair to menu

GENEVA – There are very few things more quintessentially American than a diner.

The sounds of a griddle sizzling, coffee cups clanking, incessant chatter from a cramped dining room and the round-the-clock smell of bacon and eggs create a sense of nostalgia. A charming, allAmerican town like Geneva would be amiss without one.

When the iconic Mel’s Diner closed last year, I was thrilled to find that it was being replaced by another diner.

The owners of Mel’s reopened as State Street Diner in the same location (630 W. State St.), offering customers a reinvented menu featuring American diner-type entrees alongside authentic Mexican food.

After walking through a forest green door into a crimson-colored building on the corner of State and 7th streets, my dining companion and I scanned a slender babyblue dining room for a place to plop.

“Just sit wherever?” I questioned the waitress standing behind the counter – a pot of coffee in her hand.

“Yep, sit wherever you want,” she said warmly.

The row of tables lining the wall with the window were occupied, so we chose a two-top near the rear of the restaurant opposite a large mural that depicted a church or building in the hacienda architectural style.

“Can I get you two something to drink,” said the same woman who greeted us.

I asked if they served any coffee drinks like cappuccino, since I hadn’t had my caffeine fix for the day. Coffee – yes.

Cappuccino – no.

VIEWS Mystery Diner spected a hefty menu serving a compilation of hearty as well as health-conscious American and Mexican breakfast items, salads, tacos, burritos and a bevy of burgers and sandwich selections.

“Do you have any recommendations – it’s our first time?” I asked.

Pointing to the back of the menu, the waitress mentioned Mexican dishes such as the Burrito Suizo (starting at $6.99), comparing its size to that of a football.

My dining companion looked instantly intrigued – “I’ll have that.”

Biscuits and Gravy, burgers, buttermilk pancakes, the club sandwich and most of the Mexican entrees were other popular items she mentioned.

Yes, we were dining in a

diner, and maybe I should have ordered a burger with fries and a malt (the malt at a cost of $4.99) or milkshake ($4.25), but whenever I come across an eatery serving breakfast all day, I have a hard time ordering anything else.

So, I opted for a half order of the Biscuits and Gravy ($2.99) and a Southwestern Chicken Skillet ($8.99) with home fries (or hash browns) green peppers, onions and cheddar cheese with scrambled eggs and a side of wheat toast (English muffins are also available).

Most tables were occupied by 12:30 p.m., and our waitress – seemingly a one-woman show – calmly took orders, kept drinks topped off, delivered food and checked on customers with haste.

The impeccable service continued when our orders appeared in front of us in no time at all.

Strangely, my skillet didn’t arrive in its namesake

cast-iron frying pan, but my attention quickly turned to the burrito. It’s heft and girth, and colorful splaying of homemade red ranchero sauce, melted cheese, guacamole and creme, certainly made an entrance.

At first glance, the drizzling of creme fittingly resembled the laces of a football.

“Whoa,” was my knee-jerk reaction.

The tightly wrapped tortilla kept chicken, refried beans, rice, lettuce, avocado sauce and MORE cheese intact, but it’s tender shell was no match for my fork and steak knife. As I sliced through its layers from top to bottom, I also realized that my mouth was no match for this burrito.

Anyone with an appetite, on a budget and not wanting to sacrifice quality for quantity or price, needs to visit State Street Diner and get the Burrito Suizo with chicken, chipotle chicken, steak or carnitas. Keep in mind the price goes up $2 for dinner, so go for lunch.

Other interesting Mexican

menu items included the Pastor Tacos ($9.95) with pork, pineapple pico de gallo, red cabbage and Guajillo salsa; Fish Tacos ($10.95); and Chipotle Chicken Tortas ($5.95) with sauteed chicken, onion, garlic and chipotle with refried beans, queso fresco and avocado alloli.

Sitting in a plateful of porkinfused gravy, the biscuits were soft and teamed nicely with the creaminess of the gravy. Although, the dish could have used a kick of spice or a stronger flavor of pork sausage and pepper.

I liked the idea of half orders on the menu, because it allows customers to try a multitude of items. In addition to a half order of biscuits and gravy, the menu also features half orders of French Toast ($3.99) and a short stack of Buttermilk Pancakes ($3.99).

Unlike a lot of urban diners, State Street is not open around the clock. My suggestion is to come for breakfast or lunch. The service is quick and delightful, you have full range of the menu and will end up paying less for burritos.

It may seem strange ordering Mexican dishes at an American-style diner, but if you think about it; that is the epitome of American culture.

The beauty of State Street Diner is that you can order bacon, eggs and flapjacks one day and Huevas a la Mexicana the next.

This Valentines Day, let Strawberry Velvet Shortcake convey your feelings

By MARGARET MAPLES GateHouse News Service Lacy, loving messages come in all shapes and sizes on Valentine’s Day. This year, why not let Strawberry Velvet Shortcake convey your feelings?

Whether you prepare a feast at home or eat out and then invite your sweetie to a private dessert, this vivid creation is sure to end your meal with a flourish.

This dish has several components, including a garnish and a sauce, so it qualifies as a complex dessert and looks very fancy.

But it’s not difficult. Three of the components should be made at least a day ahead, so you’ll be preparing most of this treat in advance.

We’ve suggested ways to assemble the shortcake, but it’s better to let your own creativity loose. Go with the flow and make the dessert your own.

Do in advance

•฀Cake:฀Instead฀of฀the฀ standard golden sponge cake base, we’re using red฀velvet.฀If฀you฀have฀a฀ particular favorite recipe, use that. But a store-bought mix works fine, especially if you add a teaspoon of pure vanilla extract to the batter.

After the cake cools, use cookie cutters to make heart-shaped cake bases.

•฀Sauce:฀Strawberries,฀ fresh or frozen, work beautifully here. Be sure to set aside several whole berries so you can decorate with one perfect gem or with spoonfuls of chopped fruit.

To make the sauce, put a pound of strawberries and 1/3 to 1/2 cup of granulated sugar in a food processor or blender. The amount

•฀Hearts:฀White฀rolled฀ fondant is available at cooking supply and some craft stores. Knead the fondant until it’s soft, then roll it 1/8-inch฀thick.฀Continue฀the฀ traditional Valentine motif, using cookie cutters to create hearts in various sizes.

Let these dry and harden for at least 24 hours.

Serving the shortcake You’re almost ready to plate this pretty dessert.

You’ll need whipped cream, powdered sugar and, if you like, a few white chocolate bits.

Take steps to monitor elderly parent’s welfare Dear Doctor K: How can I help care for my elderly mother? She lives alone, but not close enough for me to visit regularly.

Dear Reader: My father died young, but my mother lived into her late 70s. She lived 3,000 miles away, and alone. As she started to lose some of her energy and independence, it was pretty stressful for me. You just can’t know what’s going on with the person you love.

Supervising care and handling problems that arise are difficult, too.

Here are some tips I followed.

I hope they can ease some of your difficulties: •฀Book฀regular฀trips.฀When฀you฀ visit your mother, try to arrive at the beginning of the week. That way, you’ll have several weekdays to handle problems and line up services. Call ahead to make appointments if you plan to research caregivers or nursing homes.

•฀If฀you’re฀checking฀up฀on฀caregivers already in place, it may be better not to give advance notice.

When you arrive, look around and ask yourself: How is your mother doing? Is the house clean? Are pantry and fridge shelves well stocked? Are bills being paid?

•฀Take฀some฀time฀to฀organize฀ important papers. If possible, make copies of these documents to

A teen program, Alateen, is also part of the AA family and is designed to help teens cope with alcoholic parents. Even if mom delays contacting AA, you and your brother can get involved with Alateen.

Mom’s chances for successful treatment are much better since she is in the early stages of alcoholism.

Bridge is full of suit combinations that can be played in different ways, depending on the number of tricks needed or the circumstances in a particular deal. Taken in isolation, how should South handle today’s heart suit for either five tricks or four? And in the full deal, how should South play in six hearts after West leads the diamond queen?

In the auction, North’s threeheart rebid was game-forcing.

South’s three spades was a control-bid (cue-bid) indicating a maximum, the spade ace and slam interest if North had a sufficiently strong hand. Four clubs and four diamonds were also control-bids, showing the aces of those suits.

To play the heart suit without loss, declarer should cash dummy’s king before finessing his jack. If South can afford one loser, he should cash his ace, play low to dummy’s king, and lead back toward his jack. (This would be the right play in six hearts if West had led a spade, not a diamond.)

In this deal, though, if South loses an early trump trick, the opponents will cash two diamond winners. The best line of play is to take the heart king and ace immediately. Here, the queen drops and declarer can claim an overtrick. But if the queen remains elusive, South plays on clubs, hoping to discard both of his diamond losers. If hearts are 3-2, declarer needs the defender with the queen to have at least three clubs. If hearts are 4-1 without giving South two unavoidable losers, the key defender must hold at least four clubs.
