Paws, Claws, and Blessings Galore In October, students, faculty, and staff gathered outside the Middle School and Upper School chapels with their furry and scaly friends for the beloved Blessing of the Animals chapel service. Held each year around October 4th for the Feast of St. Francis of Assisi, patron saint of animals and the environment, the service welcomed dogs, cats, a Suriname boa, and bunnies. Among them was Herbie, the bunny of Athletic Trainer Kylie Fleming, who received his very first blessing and a special note from Father Doyle: “You’re too cute to cause trouble!”

T

he tie that binds all of us together is Shattuck-St. Mary’s School, and the thread that creates a throughline from 1858 until today is the impact the School has had on our lives. Whether we are alums, parents, faculty, or current students, our relationship with our School has influenced our way of looking at the world and how we choose to engage with the people in it.

First and foremost, Shattuck is a collection of people who care about each other and want to continue to be a part of something bigger than themselves. Our tradition of no names on jerseys is a small but significant example of this idea. At the same time, the award boards lining Shumway halls, and the names on our buildings remind us we are beads on a long string, others have paved the way for us, and our responsibility to the School is to keep going. To persist.

The people are certainly what make our School special. That was true in the first years of its existence and will remain true throughout the duration of its life. But we would be remiss to think solely of the people when considering the importance of Shattuck on our lives. I’ve heard too many stories of first loves (and first heartbreaks) told by alums from the 60s and 70s to know the physical campus—the buildings and grounds, themselves—feature prominently in our memories.

I’ve stood with alums on the steps of Shumway overlooking the Parade Field in silence as they quietly scroll through memories on their cranial rolodex, remembering the moments—both good and bad— they spent there. I’ve watched our faculty who live in St. Mary’s Hall build and tend gardens, and

seen the hard work many of our employees put in to build the trails that wind through the woods tying our campuses together. I’ve stood in the entry to Whipple reading the names etched in stone to internalize sacrifice, and in front of our Distinguished Alum and Rising Star boards to bask in excellence.

We have a dedicated Community Walk highlighting the people and buildings who have allowed us to be here today. Our Fayfield walls highlight BioScience capstones throughout the years, our upper Shumway walls highlight our players and productions. We still have a fence around a piece of land near The Lodge where once a playground stood (built, incidentally, by the faculty and staff ). Everywhere you look, our buildings and grounds are part of the Shattuck-St. Mary’s story.

SCHOOL NEWS A New Chapter for Shattuck-St. Mary’s in Vietnam Shattuck-St. Mary’s International School Vietnam in Haiphong officially opened its doors this August, welcoming students and families to experience SSM’s distinctive approach to learning, nearly 7,700 miles from Faribault.

On October 27, Head of School Matt Cavellier, Director of Admissions Andrew Garlinkski, and Chief International Officer Nick Cobbett visited Haiphong to celebrate the school’s opening and meet students and staff.

The K-12 campus blends rigorous academics with real world opportunities through signature programs like ScholarShift® and weCreate®, along with a growing Golf Center of Excellence. Currently home to 50 students, the campus also honors SSM’s Minnesota legacy through buildings named for beloved figures such as Bishop Whipple, Dick Kettering, Dorothy Lang, Lynn Redmond, and Merry Mendoza, and even features its own Arch, a familiar symbol of tradition and connection for SSM alumni around the world.

“This new school provides world class academic, artistic, and athletic opportunities to boarding and day students,” said Cobbett. “Through the strong partnership with SSM, SSM Vietnam builds on our legacy as a global community dedicated to student empowerment.”

Shattuck-St. Mary’s Vietnam is home to an arts center, library, theater, athletic center, PGA development center with a golf driving range, and tennis and pickleball courts. The campus also features a replicated Arch, echoing the one that stands at the entrance of the Faribault campus.

During their visit to Shattuck-St. Mary’s Vietnam, Head of School Matt Cavellier, Director of Admissions Andrew Garlinski ‘98, SSMES Chief International Officer Nick Cobbett ‘85, and Director of Business Development - Asia SSMES Yoyo Zhang spent time with students and faculty, deepening the bond between the two campuses.

CONVENIENT, PORTABLE DESIGN Fits easily in classrooms, offices, or small spaces.

Fresh, Local, and Growing Year-Round Step into the Shattuck-St. Mary’s servery and you might notice something unusual: rows of vibrant lettuce stretching toward LED lights, growing silently in a vertical hydroponic system. It’s fresh, crisp, and grown right on campus, a daily reminder that innovation can be as close as your lunch plate.

“Someone mentioned hydroponic growing to me, and I was intrigued,” says Robert Brown, Director of Food Services. “Then I saw a CBS news segment on a company who was doing it, did some research, ran the numbers, and finally presented the idea to the School. It’s been amazing to see it come to life.”

The system, called Flex Farm, is a compact yet powerful indoor growing unit. Occupying less than 10 square feet, it can produce up to 394 pounds of fresh produce annually. Its 288 plant spaces are nourished by a self-contained water and nutrient system, while energy-efficient LED lights simulate sunlight for steady, year-round growth. Using 98% less water than traditional farming, the system eliminates soil entirely and delivers crisp greens with minimal environmental impact.

Out of the 288 plant spaces, food services currently uses only 144 to give each seed room to thrive. The

clay-encapsulated seeds usually take three days to germinate before being transplanted, with a fresh harvest ready 18-26 days after being planted.

“In a little over a year, we’ve had 13 harvests, most of them leaf greens,” Robert says. “That’s a big impact, since we go through over 9,000 pounds of leaf greens each school year. We also save about $1.50 per pound using this model.”

Looking ahead, the food services team hopes to expand the system to grow new varieties, experiment with other crops, and possibly integrate it into student learning opportunities around sustainability, agriculture, or culinary arts. For now, though, the thriving hydroponic greens quietly showcase how innovation, sustainability, and fresh food can flourish together at SSM. “We look forward to this being just the beginning,” says Head of School Matt Cavellier. “Growing our own greens allows us to stabilize food costs and eliminate product travel time. This means our students are eating greens at peak freshness and we can plan out our expenses with confidence.”

Local/Civic Organization Involvement: Terry has coached for the Seacoast Spartans youth hockey organization in Exeter, NH for many years. He currently coaches his youngest son’s 2015 (Squirt) team.

A Fun Fact About Chris: After being a lifelong Midwesterner, Chris has come to enjoy the outdoor lifestyle (and mild winters) found in the Pacific Northwest. He took up snowboarding recently and has thus far avoided major injury!

Lloyd graduated last spring and is now playing Division 1 soccer at University of Evansville in Indiana. Max is now a junior at SSM and continues to pursue his dreams of playing soccer at the highest level.

Faculty Summer Asia Trip Continuing an annual SSM tradition, Director of Vocal Performance Pete Schleif and Mathematics Instructor Lori Schleif traveled to Asia this summer to visit students, alumni, and families, strengthening the School’s global community. The following reflection, written by Pete, offers a glimpse into their journey.

This past June, Lori and I had the distinct honor of traveling to China and South Korea as faculty representatives. The purpose of our visit was to connect with current and former students while gaining a deeper understanding of their cultural backgrounds. We began in Shenzhen, China, a dynamic technology hub known for its vast electronics markets, outstanding cuisine, and vibrant arts districts. We also took a day trip to Hong Kong, where we explored notable landmarks, museums, and cultural sites.

Our next destination was Beijing, where we were struck by the city’s efficiency, cleanliness, and sense of safety. Experiencing Beijing firsthand offered valuable insight into the cultural transition many of our international students experience when they arrive in Faribault. While in Beijing, we visited the Forbidden City, the Great Wall, and the Summer Palace, while enjoying exceptional hospitality and meaningful conversations. We continued to Shanghai, where the blend of tradition and modernity, particularly along the Bund, left a lasting impression.

The final portion of our journey took us to Seoul, South Korea, a vibrant and colorful city that similarly integrates old and new.

Highlights included visiting the Imperial Palace, participating in a kimchi-making workshop at a Kimchi Museum, and attending a Korean professional baseball game, which offered a lively glimpse into local culture. The experiences and insights we gained will remain with us for years to come, and we are continually inspired by the many ways our international students enrich our community. Throughout this trip, we were guided by 19 different SSM students and alums, as well as our beloved colleague, Yoyo Zhang. We are deeply grateful for these relationships, and for the opportunity to represent our School abroad.

Seventeen years of service, countless acts of kindness, and an unforgettable sense of humor— Terry Gardner leaves Shattuck-St. Mary’s with a legacy that touches every corner of campus. As colleague Racquel Rott shared, “Terry was a jack-of-alltrades—he did just about everything. As long as he had his big wireless headphones and a large Diet Coke, he was happy.” Whether responding to a work order or lending a hand just because, Terry was always there to help, often with a smile and a quick joke. Students and colleagues alike came to rely on his steady presence, his willingness to tackle any task, and his ability to make everyone feel supported.

Former colleague Amy Miller recalled first meeting him during a challenging year and finding not just a co-worker, but a true friend.

“From the little things like saying ‘Thanks for coming in today,’ to the bigger things, like helping with my wedding catering—Terry was everything to all of us.” Terry’s humor, heart, and generosity have left an indelible mark on SSM. He will be deeply missed, and we wish him a retirement filled with health, happiness, and well-earned relaxation.

After 10 years of dedicated service at Shattuck-St. Mary’s, Mary Weaver retires, leaving a legacy of heart, humor, and genuine care for every student. As colleague Carrie Homuth shared, “Everything she did, she did with the students in mind…celebrating who they are, and recognizing the beauty in their quirks, their intricacies, and their cultures.”

Mary transformed the library into a safe and welcoming space where students felt seen, heard, and valued. She was always ready to listen: “What’s going on? Here, have a seat and chat.”

Mary’s big heart is matched by her largerthan-life personality. Known for her love of treats, her wit, and her engaging presence, she brought warmth and laughter to every corner of campus. Jan Gould-Martin ‘75 English Department Chair/English Instructor/ESL Instructor As SSM bids farewell to longtime English teacher and department chair Jan Gould-Martin, we celebrate a remarkable career defined by intellect, integrity, and inspiration. The following remarks, shared by Associate Head of School Stephanie Vagle, beautifully capture Jan’s lasting impact on generations of students and colleagues.

“Jan Gould-Martin has been one of the great hearts and minds of Shattuck-St. Mary’s, a teacher who did not simply work here but truly lived this place. A daughter of SSM herself, Jan returned to teach, to lead, and ultimately to become the first woman to chair the English Department. In her classroom, literature came alive: Shakespeare beside The Vegetarian and Night Watch, every voice, especially the difficult ones, honored and heard.

Her expectations were famously high, matched only by her deep belief in what students and colleagues could become. Jan leaves us wiser, steadier, and more attuned to the power of words and truth. As she moves to Grand Junction to enjoy family, mountains, and time for writing, her spirit endures, reminding us to listen deeply, think bravely, and believe in what is possible.”

hattuck-St. Mary’s celebrated the Class of 2025 with its Commencement ceremony on May 23, in the gymnasium of The Putrah Sports Complex. Head of School Matt Cavellier welcomed graduates, families, and guests, thanking faculty, staff, and parents for their commitment and support. In his address, he spoke about the power of being “singular”—standing out, persevering, and striving to be remarkable. “We could not be more proud of the work you put in to get this far,” he told the graduates.

The ceremony opened with a prayer from The Rt. Rev. Craig Loya, X Bishop of the Episcopal Church in Minnesota, followed by the presentation of traditional gifts—gold crosses and lapel pins—to each graduate.

Commencement speaker Rick Barr ’75 reflected on his own graduation 50 years earlier and spoke about opportunity as the defining theme of a life well lived. With humor and wisdom, he encouraged graduates to dream boldly, embrace challenges, and surround themselves with good people. Drawing on his family’s deep ties to SSM, he highlighted the transformative power of education and the legacy of alumni generosity. His closing advice was simple but enduring: “Protect your attitude.”

Valedictorian ( Justin) Jeonghoo Kim ’25 delivered a heartfelt message to his classmates, acknowledging both the relentless effort and the sacrifices of their journeys. While proud of reaching his own academic goals, he admitted wishing he had taken more risks. “So live. Experience. Take risks. Make mistakes,” he urged. “There’s no perfect way to live life—but there’s an honest way, a meaningful way, a way that’s yours and nobody else’s.”

Following the awarding of diplomas by Upper School Director Pat Schaefer, graduates exited through a receiving line of cheering faculty and staff, before joining family and friends to celebrate the beginning of their next chapter.

As the Class of 2025 prepared to cross the stage at Commencement, a few of them took a moment to write letters— to the School that shaped them, the mentors who inspired them, and the community that supported them. In their own words, they captured what it means to grow, to strive, and to belong at Shattuck-St. Mar y’s.

Each of these letters offers a glimpse into what it means to carry SSM forward: the friendships that endure, the lessons that linger, and the place that will always feel like home.

Dear SSM, It still feels unreal that I am saying goodbye after six years here. I can picture myself as a seventh grader in 2019, as most faculty here can picture me. I probably spent more time in the dining hall here than in my room back in China. From stage lights to suitcase wheels, I have created some of my favorite memories here.

From the wild production of “You're a Good Man, Charlie Brown” to that Orlando choir trip we went on earlier this year. Easily some of the best times I’ve ever had. Who could resist skipping a weekend and going to Disneyworld and Universal Studios? There are many more things to say, but then this wouldn’t be a letter, but a book instead.

I want to say thank you to the faculty and staff who have taught me, guided me, and occasionally criticized me during these fabulous years. And thank you to the friends I’ve made here who laughed with me, supported me, and created memories I will discuss for the next couple of years. Shattuck, you have become a huge and irreplaceable part of my identity. Though moving on to my next life chapter, I will carry these moments, lessons, and legacy you left for me.

Maybe some embarrassing memories as well.

Dear SSM, Thank you for being a home away from home. You didn’t just give me an education; you gave me my best friends, people who have become like family and who have made every moment here unforgettable. It’s crazy to think that it’s all over. Four years flew by in the blink of an eye. I will forever be grateful to my friends, teammates, and teachers who made the whole experience one of a kind. Thank you, Shattuck, you will forever be my home away from home.

Dear SSM, These past four years have gone by so unbelievably quick. I came here not knowing anything or what to expect, and now I am leaving having become a better leader, student, teammate, and friend. The people here—my classmates, coaches, teachers, faculty, and even those who work quietly behind the scenes— are what make this place so special. Their dedication, kindness, and spirit are what I’ll remember most. To the Class of 2025, you all are incredibly hardworking and supportive, and I am endlessly grateful to be a part of it. I cannot wait to see where you all go, and I already look forward to the days when we can be back on this campus together again because the people are the place—and this place will always be a part of me.

It’s definitely been a journey. I stepped through the Arch as a sixth grader who had recently (and very reluctantly) moved across the country so her father could start a new job at a school called Shattuck-St. Mary’s. As far as first impressions go, mine were a mix of “This place looks like Hogwarts from Harry Potter” to “I’m so going to get lost in that building”. Having left all my friends behind in Texas, I was very unsure of how this new school and new place to call home would fit into my life.

Fast forward seven years, and I have just walked across the stage at graduation. Seven years at the same school will teach you a few lessons, one of which is that no place you will ever go is perfect. SSM for me was not what it was to many others who come here. I did not come to play hockey or soccer. I did not come to join Engineering, Bioscience, or sing in the Vocal Performance COE. Over time, and especially my senior year, my experiences at SSM taught me a very valuable lesson. There is always a positive in every situation, but you have to choose to find it. Though my years here weren’t always smooth sailing, I think that was for the better. It forced me to be grateful for what I did have and make the most of my situation.

So, thank you SSM, for here at this school I found the sport of mountain biking by going on rides with our athletic director, Michele Cornish. I, and other kids, were able to co-op with Faribault to participate in a variety of sports. I joined the track team, giving me a new sport to try with an incredible team. I was pushed out of my comfort zone through being a part of dance and performing in front of large crowds. I was challenged in the classroom, having the opportunity to meet and be taught by most of the teachers throughout my seven years here. I am very thankful for the faculty and staff that have consistently been in my corner and cheering me on.

SSM, I have had some invaluable experiences and learned so many life lessons, and I wouldn’t change that for the world. I hope that coming back through the Arch year after year I am reminded of all the people and experiences that shaped who I am, and leave with awe that I get to call this place home.

Dear SSM, The Arch has seen more people pass through it than anyone could count. The Arch is not just a piece of history, but a symbol of growth. The person who walks through the Arch is never the same as the one who walks out. The growth that a Shattuck-St. Mary’s student undergoes is one of a kind, but cannot be done without the people inside. The people are instilled with characteristics that are sought after on a daily basis. The pursuit and consistency of these characteristics allow us, the students, to become the best individuals we can be. Pushing us to determine what is right and wrong, allowing us to make mistakes and learn from them. These experiences within the Arch develop these characteristics, creating a more mature version of ourselves that will bolster success in future endeavors.

The Shattuck community becomes a family.

Each individual leaves an impression on another. Teachers leave a lasting mark on students. Students connect with one another in classrooms and dorms. Dorm parents become second families, offering support and care that feel like home. Creating memories and friendships that will last a lifetime.

Something we wouldn’t trade for anything.

So Shattuck, thank you—for the values you’ve instilled, the relationships you’ve fostered, and the people who have helped shape us into who we are becoming.

Dear SSM, As I get ready to leave this chapter of my life behind,, I find myself thinking back on everything this place has given me—lessons, challenges, and unforgettable memories.

SSM wasn’t just a school; it was home. A place where I learned to balance who I was with who I wanted to become. Whether it was late-night study sessions, cold morning practices, or those spontaneous moments in the dorms, each experience pushed me to grow in ways I never expected.

The teachers, coaches, and staff here didn’t just teach—they invested. You challenged me to speak up, show up, and stay consistent even when it was hard. Through it all, I learned what it means to lead, to persist, and to care about something bigger than myself.

There were setbacks. But SSM taught me that growth doesn’t come from comfort—it comes from effort, rejection, and a willingness to stay open to the next step, even if I don’t know exactly where it leads.

Thank you for shaping me. I’m leaving with more than just knowledge—I’m leaving with purpose, with friendships I’ll carry for life, and with the confidence to keep building who I am.

The spirit of reflection extends beyond the Class of 2025.

Nora Brown ’96 shared her own “Dear SSM” letter— recalling how the daily rhythm of SSM life revealed lessons in community, compassion, and lasting connection.

Dear SSM, I can still hear the clock tower ringing through the crisp winter air; a sound that once signaled routine but now welcomes me home whenever I return. The memories of the sounds, smells, and sights remain quietly with me after all these years.

You taught me more than I understood at the time. Of course, I worked hard to learn while I was a student—essays for Schuster written and re-written late into the night (shhh… don’t tell the dorm parents), Mr. Freeman’s labs that seemed impossible at first glance, and math problems that made my head explode. But what sticks with me today are the lessons that happened in between— learning to show up for others while standing up for myself, finding joy in the mundane, and valuing the unique bonds of friendship only a school like SSM can build.

I remember the seemingly endless repetition of our days; balancing a desire for an extra few minutes of sleep with the need to get in the showers early while the water was still hot; rushing to get to breakfast before the first bell; being late to class after lingering a little too long near the heaters in the hall with friends; and trying to figure out which night to use my free pass on to get out study hall and enjoy that sweet taste of freedom. It seemed monotonous at the time, but looking back I know it provided a kind of safety and shared purpose that let us grow up even when we didn’t realize it.

The community of SSM was unlike anything I experienced before.

There were teachers who saw more in me than I saw in myself, who nudged me toward curiosity and taught me to take chances.

There were friends who taught me the beauty of showing up, for celebration, for heartbreak, for the ordinary in between. And there was the campus itself, a character in its own right that played an active role in transforming a group of strangers into a family.

When I think of you now, SSM, I think of how those lessons and experiences have carried me through the years. Your classrooms taught me to work hard and think deeply; your dorms taught me how to understand others and appreciate differences; and your community taught me how truly wonderful it is to have a village to call your own.

I didn’t fully appreciate it then, but SSM gave me a space I didn’t know I needed, a space to fail, to discover, to grow. Looking back, I realize that the greatest lesson you taught me was not about achievement, but about how to show up, about how to be fully present in the world with integrity, curiosity, and compassion. You taught me to lead, but never without kindness. You taught me that strength and grace can coexist; that confidence need not drown out humility.

Even now, when I meet fellow alumni, there’s a shared understanding, a spark of recognition that transcends generations. We may have walked your halls and tunnels at different times, but we are all shaped by the same spirit and belief in possibility, in community, in purpose. That, I think, is your true legacy.

Thank you, SSM, for believing in me before I knew how to believe in myself. For giving me a foundation of confidence and curiosity that has carried me farther than I could have imagined. For reminding me, always, that education is not just about what we learn, but about who we become in the process.

Celebrating 20 Years of Ar tistic Excellence For 20 years, Shattuck-St. Mary’s has invited other Minnesota independent schools to participate in a juried art show. What began with just SSM and Blake School has grown into a long-standing fall tradition that continues to bring together talented young artists from across the state.

“The first year I proposed the invitational to happen in the spring to fellow art teachers at the MAIS (Minnesota Association of Independent Schools) conference,” said Performing and Visual Arts (PAVA) Chair Johnnie Walker. “The reception was sort of mediocre, but I did find an ally in Bob Teslow at Blake School. He told me to move it to the fall and there would be more schools who could participate. The first year it was just SSM and Blake, but when I moved it to the fall many more schools joined in. Here we are 20 years later, and this little show keeps chugging along.”

Walker also reflected on the value of the show for students. “It is hard to find juried shows that coincide with the SSM calendar and I wanted something close but significant for our visual art students to participate in,” he said. “Having a juror gives them a sense of what it’s like in the wider arts community to enter a show and sometimes win—and other times not even have a piece accepted. We also like to have the students help set the show. Learning how to curate an exhibit is so valuable because they’ll need that skill for their own art shows in the future.”

Now celebrating its 20th year, the invitational continues to showcase creativity, collaboration, and community—hallmarks of the visual arts program at Shattuck-St. Mary’s.

A Tradition of Talent: SSM Performing Arts Students Earn Top Honors Across the State

From string performances to vocal showcases, Shattuck-St. Mary’s students continue to shine on stages across Minnesota. This fall, students from both the Pre-Conservatory and Vocal Performance Program (VPP) Centers of Excellence earned statewide recognition for their artistry, dedication, and musical growth.

Pre-Conservatory Center of Excellence cellist Anita Matsuura ’31 was named the winner of the Rochester Symphony’s Young Artists Showcase, earning the opportunity to perform Elgar’s Cello Concerto with the orchestra on February 1. She also took first place in her division at the Mary West Solo Competition, hosted by the Minnesota String and Orchestra Teachers Association—a remarkable achievement that continues the Pre-Conservatory’s long-standing tradition of excellence.

“Anita plays with precocious mastery of her instrument and clear musical ideas. These two prizes are no surprise to the faculty that have worked with her and a sign of things to come,” stated Ben Downs, Director of the Pre-Conservatory Center of Excellence.

Anita joins a distinguished roster of Pre-Conservatory students who have won the Mary West Solo Competition, including Mark Prihodko ’16 (2012 & 2014), Sara Aldana ’18 (2014), Maria Chirinos ’18 (2016 & 2017), Cate Carson ’20 (2017 & 2018), Harrison Oh ’19 (2018), James Thompson ’20 (2018 & 2019), and Waverly Field ’31 (2024)—each representing the program’s deep musical roots and commitment to artistic mastery.

Meanwhile, students from the Vocal Performance Program Center of Excellence also had a banner day at the Minnesota NATS (National Association of Teachers of Singing) Vocal Competition, where all three participants placed in their respective categories.

The singers advanced through several rounds to reach the final performances held on the beautiful stage of Benson Great Hall at Bethel University in St. Paul.

Osip Nikiforov ‘13 is teaching Piano and Keyboard Skills at Macalester College in Saint Paul, MN. Sophia Schutte ‘16 earned a violin position with the prestigious Würtemmberg Chamber Orchestra, located in Heilbronn, Baden Württemberg, Germany.

“NATS is one of the more technical competitions that the VPP participates in, with a focus on vocal technique and musicality,” said Pete Schleif, Director of the Vocal Performance Program.

Ileana Fernandez ’30, in her very first competition, earned Anita Matsuura ’31 took first place in her division at the third place in the Mary West Solo competition.

Middle School Musical Theater category and third place in the Middle School Classical category. Hannah Do ’26 placed second in the Upper High School Classical category, and Adelina Mukhametzhanova ’26 earned first place in both the Upper High School Musical Theater and Second-Year College Classical categories. This year’s competition added to Adelina’s impressive record, marking her fifth first-place finish at MN NATS in four years.

These achievements reflect the hard work, talent, and dedication of SSM’s performing arts students, and the school congratulates them on their outstanding successes.

Maria Chirinos ‘18 was named Assistant Principal of the Orlando Philharmonic Orchestra.

Vinh Nguyen ‘20 recently performed Beethoven’s Piano Concerto No. 5 with the Vietnam Symphony Orchestra.

Ben Bian ’19 presented his final Graduate Recital at Temple University in Philadelphia on November 6.

Sabre Soccer COE Celebrates 20 Years This year marks the 20th anniversary of the Shattuck-St. Mary’s Soccer Center of Excellence. Since starting in 2005, both the boys’ and girls’ squads have become nationally recognized as one of the top programs in the country for youth soccer development.

SSM has seen over 200 soccer alumni go on to compete in college, including at some of the nation’s top soccer programs. Numerous Sabre alumni have played for their respective youth and senior national teams as well as in the professional ranks. Three former Sabres have also represented their countries at the Olympics and FIFA Women’s World Cup. Shattuck-St. Mary’s Boys Soccer Director, Sean Bushey, reflected on his time at SSM and the foundation of the soccer programs.

“SSM is a special place. This is so because of the people. Yes, SSM Soccer has won conference titles, graduates have lifted NCAA championship trophies, made professional debuts, sustained years of professional playing, but more so, they have started families, run businesses, coached teams, and contributed to their communities. This is the story we seek to tell the next prospective SSM soccer player. It is more than soccer; this is more than a club; this is more than a school. When I speak with our alumni, whether they were the pioneers of our program, or more recent graduates, they share a gratitude for the SSM experience in shaping who they have become. This is what we will continue to strive to be for the next twenty years!”

Kate Bittenbender Rides to Nationals

In just her first year of collegiate competition, Class of 2025 graduate Kate Bittenbender qualified for the USA Cycling Collegiate National Championship in Mountain Biking, which was held at Powderhorn Mountain Resort in Grand Junction, Colorado, October 9-12. Kate was one of three members of the Milligan University cycling program to participate in the event. She finished 36th overall out of 60 competitors in the short track event.

Zengue Caps off Undefeated Season with USL Title Shattuck-St. Mary’s Boys Soccer Center of Excellence alum Zach Zengue ’22 helped lead the Vermont Green FC to a thrilling 2-1 win over Ballard FC in extra time to win the national championship and cap off an undefeated season for the Green in the United Soccer League (USL) League Two. Zach, a co-captain of the Green, assisted on the championship-winning goal.

Sabre Soccer Trio Have Pro Stints

The Shattuck-St. Mary’s Girls Soccer Center of Excellence garnered more recognition as a trio of alums made professional appearances this season. Julia Roddar ’11 signed with the London City Lionesses of the Barclay's Women's Super League, which is the highest division of women's soccer in England. Earlier this fall, goalkeeper Nadia Cooper signed a temporary contract with the Houston Dash of the NWSL after a stellar playing career at Washington State University. Meanwhile, over the summer, current Sabre Brooklyn Reid ’26 trained with the NSWL’s Portland Thorns and was even selected to serve as backup keeper for a friendly match between the Thorns and the Seattle Reign.

Sabre Hockey Alumni Drafted to the Pros

A total of nine Shattuck-St. Mary’s hockey alumni were chosen in their respective professional league drafts this summer. Five former Sabres (Ryker Lee, Henry Brzustewicz, Kristian Epperson, Will Belle, and Aidan Park ’24) heard their names called during the NHL Draft in Los Angeles, Calif., June 27-28.

Likewise, four SSM girls hockey alums from the Class of 2020 (Casey O’Brien, Makenna Webster, Clara Van Wieren, and Madison Samoskevich) were chosen in the PWHL Draft, which took place in Ottawa, Ontario, Canada, on June 24.

SSM has now had 120 former players drafted to the NHL and 15 to the PWHL.

Former Sabres Help Team USA to Historic Wins When the United States won gold in both the 2025 IIHF Women’s World Championships and the 2025 IIHF Men’s World Championships this past spring, the rosters were littered with players who honed their skills at SSM. On the women’s side, Aerin Frankel ’17 and Lacey Eden ’20 were integral members of Team USA, which captured a thrilling 4-3 overtime victory over Canada in the gold medal game in České Budějovice, Czechia. Aerin finished second in the tournament with a .945 save percentage and a 1.05 goals against average in five games played. Meanwhile, Lacey chipped in with one goal and one assist while suiting up for six games.

On the men’s side, five former Sabres suited up for Team USA as it won gold for the first time in 92 years at the 2025 IIHF Men's World Championship, which was played in Herning, Denmark, and Stockholm, Sweden, May 9-25, 2025. Clayton Keller served as team captain, while Conor Garland was an assistant captain. Isaac Howard, Jackson LaCombe ’19, and Zeev Buium also donned the red, white, and blue.

Mackie Samoskevich Lifts Cup as Cats go Back-to-Back

When the Florida Panthers defeated the Edmonton Oilers in the Stanley Cup Final for the second consecutive year this past June, those in the Shattuck-St. Mary’s community may have recognized a familiar face lifting Lord Stanley’s Cup. Former Sabre Mackie Samoskevich, who was a member of the Panthers’ minor league affiliate a year ago, finally got his turn to celebrate as a full-time member of the NHL franchise.

Mackie contributed 32 points (15 goals, 17 assists) in 76 games for the Panthers throughout the regular season and playoffs. At least one former Sabre has won The Cup in each of the last four seasons and 13 SSM alumni in total have captured hockey’s ultimate prize.

Brianna Decker Makes Jump to PWHL

Buchbinder and Frost Find Victory Twice as Nice

For the second year in a row, Natalie Buchbinder ’17 and the Minnesota Frost claimed the Walter Cup as champions of the Professional Women’s Hockey League (PWHL).

Natalie, who was one of three Sabre alumni to win the title in the inaugural season, played in 27 games on the Minnesota blueline. She helped the Frost compile a 2.38 goals against average in eight playoff games en route to their second straight title.

Following three seasons as Associate Head Coach for the Shattuck-St. Mary’s Girls Prep team in which she helped the Sabres win back-to-back National Championships in 2023 and 2024, Brianna Decker ’09 will face a new challenge this year as she was hired as an assistant coach with the Minnesota Frost of the PWHL. Brianna, who is one of many former Sabres to join the coaching ranks after her playing career, becomes the first SSM alum, man or woman, to coach in the highest level of professional hockey in either the NHL or PWHL.

Apart from her stint in Faribault the last three years, Brianna has also served as an assistant coach for the U.S. Under-18 Women's National Team for four different IIHF Women’s Under-18 World Championships (2019, 2020, 2023, 2024).

The festivities began with a lively Reunion Kickoff Party at Pinstripes in Edina, as well as the Honors Dinner at The Inn, celebrating the 50-year Class of 1975 and earlier classes. From the Old Shads’ Drill and Daughters Tea to the Hockey Alumni Reception and Rendezvous at The Hub, the weekend was filled with memories, laughter, and Shattuck-St. Mary’s spirit.

Peter Tomaras has recently moved to an independent living facility. He continues to write periodic columns for his local newpaper, and his novels (Resistors, Innkeeper) continue to be in demand at his site on Amazon. He has enjoyed communicating with classmates, especially Dale Fuller, Bucky Gribble, and the late Bill Graves.

Charles Petch shares that he is active in five car clubs, volunteers at Packard Proving Grounds, previously served as State Commander of AMVETS of Michigan, and is on the Executive Board of Mt. Clemens "Old Crowd." He writes that he has 10+ classic autos, and regularly attends Veterans Commanders Group of Michigan.

1962

In spring 2025, Bruce Closser completed a 47-day, 1,700-mile bicycle ride from Mobile, Alabama, to his home in Marquette, Michigan, on Lake Superior.

His route took him through eight U.S. states and part of Canada, traveling from the Gulf Coast to the “North Coast.” The ride follows his 2023 cross-country journey from the Atlantic to the Pacific, which earned him a Guinness World Record as the oldest documented person to bike across the U.S.

Jean Coffin O'Connor's first historical novel, The Remarkable Cause, is followed by the sequel, Congress's Cryptographer, the story of James Lovell in the Continental Congress. She received a medal from the National Security Agency in 2024 on behalf of James Lovell and his work in the cipher; they call him the "One-man NSA for the Revolution"!

In September, Tim Church, Ann Fredrickson, Jack Dane '75, and Michele Dane went on a week-long bicycle excursion along the Danube River, in between tours of Amsterdam and Vienna.

Mark Lewis shares that he is totally retired and living in a golf community in Las Vegas. He says "come visit!"

Marc Davis writes, "My wife, Ann, and I were named the 2024 Outstanding Tree Farmers of the Year for the Northeast Region of the American Forest Foundation. One of four tree farmers in the U.S. so honored." Marc and Ann's tree farm, Wood Without Gile, is in Springfield and Wilmot, NH.

In early 2025, Minneapolis attorney Elsa Raaen Bullard was appointed Magistrate Judge for the U.S. District Court for the District of Minnesota. Her investiture on September 25 at The Depot – Renaissance Hotel was attended by family, colleagues, and members of the judiciary. The ceremony included the presentation of the colors, the national anthem, an invocation by Father Henry Doyle, and remarks from longtime colleagues highlighting Elsa’s impact. After taking the oath, she was robed by her husband, Mike, and son, Thor, before delivering her remarks and taking her seat on the bench. The event was followed by a reception hosted by Faegre, Drinker, Biddle & Reath, LLP.

Rachel Robbins transferred from Hamline University to Montana State University, switching her major from Environmental Studies to Environmental Engineering. She also decided to stop playing college hockey, but remains connected to the sport as a practice player and manager for the Montana State Club hockey team. And with her newfound free time, she is taking full advantage of the Bozeman area, enjoying running, hiking, and exploring.

A proud Shattuck graduate, Dale Veerhusen ’62 shared an incredible collection of mementos from his student days—including reminders of his time in the Shattuck Flying Club. While at Shattuck, Dale studied fof his Private Pilot’s License. His keepsakes capture a unique chapter in Shattuck’s history.

Though not an alum, Kent Broyhill fondly remembers his summers at Shattuck Camp in 1963 and 1964, when Whipple Hall was home and days were filled with classes, drills, lake activities, and friendship. The photos he shared capture the spirit and discipline of those summers. From polishing belt buckles to earning badges at Cannon Lake, Kent recalls a structured yet joy-filled experience that left a lasting impression. Today, he still visits campus—sharing those memories and traditions with his family.
