1.3 FUNCTION AND USAGE OF GARDEN
Shah Jahan was a Mughal Emperor who was devoted to Mumtaz Mahal, one of his wives. She was also the Daughter of his mother’s brother. She requested a magnificient mausoleum for herself on her death bed. Shah Jahan began work on the monument and the garden surrounding it a er she died. To keep an eye on the construc on, he built this park. Babur describes pa Babur describes paradise as having four rivers and a garden. Shah Jahan built the garden using River Yamuna as one of the rivers. In the garden, everything is in a mul ple of four. Fruilt trees, roses and daffodils were among the first plants to be planted in the garden. The main purpose of the garden was to give a good view of the mausoleum and a good res ng place. He planned to spend his life gazing at the monument from the garden.



1.4 SPATIAL PLANNING OF GARDEN




This garden has Char Bagh pa ern. According to this style, the garden is divided into FOUR parts with the help of pathways which is an important feature of Islamic Architecture. According to Quran, the paradise has four water bodies. Each sec on of garden denotes each water body of heaven.
1.5 THE CHARBAGH PATTERN AND ITS REPRESENTATION
Char Bagh is a Persian styled garden layout in which the main built structure is put in the centre of a quadrilateral garden divided by walkways or flowing water into four smaller parts. Charbagh style in India was brought by Mughals. Shah Jahan Garden although being assymmetrical in plan has a sense of balance, which is achieved by different elements each.
