When I was sixteen, my summer camp student advisor gave me a yellow-green crayon and said it described me — always new, always forgiving.

Like spring.

I was disappointed. Yellow-green? I would much rather have been given the black crayon, classy and sophisticated like Rukhaiya, or the orange crayon, vibrant and outgoing, like Rachel.

Or purple, beautiful and poised, like Beth.

As I’ve grown older, however, I’ve become grateful that this “yellow-green” was named in me. I am not always good at forgiving, but I want to be. Forgiveness is brave, it is raw, it is real. It is some of the most important work we can do in the world.

There are enough things that are broken.

Anyone can look at something and say it isn’t worth mending, that it is beyond hope, that it is ugly. It takes a believer, a freedom fighter, an artist, to say, No. There is worth here, value, beauty.

And I will be the one to work to transform it.

The women of this flourish issue are reconcilers and creators, using color to bring forth life in a gray world. Keziah Kariuki of Cape Girardeau’s h.o.w? Ministry uses the inspiration of color in

Kenyan culture to give widows and their children a path out of poverty. Women of the River Heritage Quilt Guild use scraps of material to innovate, refusing to let the female tradition of quilting pass away in our fast-paced society.

Everyday, each of us navigate the psychology of color in our moods, outfits and buying choices.

Pablo Picasso said that every child is an artist — the problem is how to remain one.

This month, and for the rest of our lives, let us remain artists. Let us reclaim the minimized, the cast aside, the broken. Let us be purveyors of reconciliation, of moxie, of hope. Let us be women who are gap-closers, who make the first movement, who breathe our color into a downcast world.

This is how you see color: light bounces off an object and the object absorbs some of the light wavelengths, reflecting others.

These reflections hit your retina, stimulating 6 to 7 million cones concentrated in an area of 0.3 millimeters, sending signals to your brain.

Green grass. Blue skies.

Having our eyes open everyday, letting the light in, really is extraordinary.

Color is a testament to small miracles. Like the fact that humans can perceive more than 2.8 million hues. That violet is bees’ favorite color. That only one in three million of the hottest stars radiate blue light, while many more cool stars radiate red.

Color is complex. It is beautiful.

It is nuanced.

Needle and Thread The art of quilting.

The River Heritage Regional Quilt Show will be held Sept. 29 and 30, 2018, at A.C. Brase Arena Building in Cape Girardeau, Missouri.

The event will be open from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. both days, and admission is $5. The theme this year is “Black and White with a Splash of Color!”

Quilt Appraisals will be available by best-selling author Ann Hazelwood, and free demonstrations, a children’s quilt competition and a raffle will take place.

It’s been said that every person has a story to tell, and it turns out that the same may be true for every quilt. Full of color, comfort and love, handmade quilts — and the women who make them — seem to have found a way to preserve a part of past tradition, while leaving a legacy for the future.

Patchwork is a skill that began out of necessity in America during the 1700s. Women repurposed worn out clothing and materials found around their homes for blankets, door coverings and hand-me-down clothing. This style of quilting was functional, materials were limited and times were hard. Oh, if they could only see us now.

Today quilters have an endless supply of fabrics, threads and tools to aid them in the process of choosing material, designing their layout, piecing and binding it all together. Though some women still choose to sew by hand, others crank quilts out with a machine. Some work in a large studio, some in a small closet. Some love to follow a traditional pattern, and some are quilting in ways that are unconventional and modern. The possibilities with today’s quilts are endless, and there are no rules. If you dream it, you can sew it, and it seems that you’ll always have a team of women cheering you on.

No one knows that better than Karla Kiefner, a member of the River Heritage Quilt Guild in Cape Girardeau. Last year she introduced a new idea in quilting when she began using both sides of the material in her patterns.

“Quilters are just excited about quilts,” says Kiefner. “There seems to be an unspoken code that we all encourage each other, regardless of skill level or style.”

And that’s the real story. Women encouraging women. Women sharing life, creating beauty and cultivating relationship. Women need other women, and quilting seems to be a therapeutic

outlet that leads to lifelong friendships — friendships that may not have happened without the common bond of quilting.

“Something special happens when women gather together and use their hands to create,” says Carol Gallagher, who is also a member of the Guild.

And create they do. In Southeast Missouri, quilts are being made for organizations such as The Amen Center, Birthright, Lutheran Family Children Services, The Safe House for Women, Community Counseling Center, The Hope House, local nursing homes and military veterans. Quilts are pieced with patience, stitched with love and covered in prayer. Many tell a visible story, and for others the story is hidden within the person who sewed it together. Regardless, these quilts — and the people who make them — are a cherished commodity in our fast-paced world.

Local quilter Nancy Bishop has a long history with quilting.

“My children were all blessed to receive quilts that had been made with embroidered blocks by their Grandma Bishop,” she says. “Then those blocks were made into a quilt by me, and then my mother — their Grandma Steck — hand quilted it.”

Family quilts like these are sure to be treasured as they are passed down from generation to generation.

While some may see quilting as a dying art, much like the tradition of handwritten letters and personal phone calls, others will disagree. As long as there is a new generation ready to learn, there will always be women willing to teach.

So next time you curl up with a quilt at grandma’s house, ask her about it — or better yet, ask her to teach you how to make one. Chances are, she may just have a story to tell, and together you can leave a legacy for the future.

Why do you enjoy quilting?

What have you learned from quilting?

Nancy Bishop: I enjoy quilting because of the creations you can make from beautiful material or just old scraps that you have saved over the years. I enjoy getting together with friends to sew a quilt. Since 2009, I have been hosting quilt retreats at Shadow Rest Ministries three to four times a year. A group of 12-18 women will come together for three days and nights to sew and piece their quilts, enjoy each other, share meals and devotions, and sew until they drop into bed. Quilting is a wonderful time of fellowship.

Karla Kiefner: When I first started quilting, I thought the process was daunting and didn’t know if I had the patience it took to complete a quilt. What I have found is that there is a wonderful sense of satisfaction with each stage of the process as you watch the quilt come to life before your eyes. Stitching the quilt top together is really just a part of the process. Quilting the layers, trimming, binding, turning the binding by hand … all of it is just as necessary as choosing colors, fabrics, cutting them and piecing them together.

Explain to us what quilting is.

Diana Dodd: “Quilting” is often misunderstood. The act of quilting is stitching together — traditionally by hand — a quilt top, batting and backing. But this term is also used to mean “piecing a quilt top,” which can be done by hand or machine.

Lisa O’Brien: I love it because it is so amazing how you can cut and sew these small pieces of fabric into beautiful quilts that can be passed down for generations.

When it comes to beauty, I’ve always maintained the notion that one can make style their own, which is why fashion remains one of my passions.

However, I have to admit that I’m somewhat of an amateur when it comes to curating the most euphoric color combinations.

Local resident and Mary Kay Cosmetics senior sales director Jana Jateff, however, is a pro, sharing here how she suggests women choose the hue that will only magnify the beauty of their eyes and hair: “Choose colors that are direct opposite each other on the color wheel,” Jateff says. “When these colors are paired together, they create a lot of contrast and enhance one another. So, wearing a complementary color to your hair will enhance the color of your hair and eyes.”

She says someone with blonde hair should wear a purple shirt, and that redheads look good in teal. Brunettes have a lot of flexibility in choosing colors, but blue is one great option.

A few tips I have for choosing the perfect color combinations: Wear the color that makes you feel the most confident.

Who cares if that red tank doesn’t make your brown eyes pop?

Don’t listen to me because I’m no expert.

Truly, though, in order to offer some additional sound advice, one of today’s most renowned fashion blogs suggested a few combinations worthy of sharing. According to Who What Wear, the following hues enhance each color of eyes:

classic neutrals, all shades of pink, deep blues and lighter greens

Green

purple, deep greens, coral, pale yellows

Hazel

dark neutrals, orange, lavender, burgundy

Brown

khaki greens, soft pinks, rich blue hues, gold

Why does it matter what color you wear?

While these suggestions have no bearing on how fabulous you are, if you find that you’re in need of a revamp, trying these colors could certainly do the trick.

Colors have the ability to brighten your aura, in addition to enhancing your physical features.

While you may find that your favorite teal offthe-shoulder top enhances the warm red hues in your locks, remind yourself that colors are representative of more than external facets; teal, for example, is a symbol of tranquility, joy and intuition. With this in mind, wear a new color to fit your mood every day. And then take on — or over — the world.

Getting Shady From avocado green to Tuscan red: how color impacts your everyday life

Calypso, peppercorn, geranium — names of all the beautiful colors you remember using on your art project that your mom proudly hung on the refrigerator for days, until slipping it into the trash can when you weren’t looking, right?

Yeah, probably not.

Things have changed since the simple days of kindergarten art class. Visit any paint store, beauty counter or home furnishings department and you are presented with color names designed to evoke emotion. Of course, they’re all variants of one of the basic colors we grew up knowing. However, in the world of color, simple names such as purple and red are long gone.

Why is this, you ask? Studies have shown that consumers respond to these names. We want something we can connect to, and this need for connection is what marketers and brands are banking on, and why so much time and energy goes into developing names that move beyond the practical.

So what does that mean for you as a consumer? Here is a look at how color plays a role in our everyday lives.

Color and design

in your space, so more important than what a color supposedly says, is what you like.

“I like to find out what colors make my clients happy or calm, because that's ultimately how people want to feel when they go home after a long day at work or school,” says Buchheit.

Color and cars

After a home, a car is usually the second largest purchase you’ll make in a lifetime. Whether it’s a practical, white mid-sized sedan, or a snazzy red Corvette, color often plays as large a role in selection as price and available options.

According to Kelley Blue Book, “Silver remains the color of choice for luxury vehicles, with a full third of them being silver and another 30 percent being a version of white.” Gray, on the other hand, while similar to silver, is more non-descript and doesn’t stand out. On the opposite end of that spectrum is the yellow car, which may be too

Whether you’re moving into a new home or redecorating your current one, choosing the colors to use throughout is one of the biggest decisions you make.

According to Cindy Buchheit, interior designer and owner of Unique Ambiance in Cape Girardeau, “There are certain psychological reactions that humans have to color. Whether it’s consciously or subconsciously, each color tends to make us feel a certain way, mainly as a result of childhood memories, both good and bad.”

So while textbook color theory may say red increases your heart rate and should be used in the kitchen, or you should never paint a bedroom a loud color and instead choose a serene, peaceful palette, if you associate an unpleasant experience with a specific color, then you may want to choose something else.

An example Buchheit uses is “even though yellow is thought to be a happy color, I've had a client tell me that their grandmother had the worst yellow wallpaper in her bathroom, and they would never be able to use any shade of it in their house.”

Geography also plays a role when it comes to color choices for housing material, both interior and exterior.

“Depending on where you are geographically in the United States, there have been predetermined color palettes that you can pick from,” says Buchheit.

"They're divided into three different ranges: East Coast, which is primarily coastal colors; Midwest, which is earth tones; and the West Coast, which is more whites and Spanish-infused.”

Ultimately, you are the one living

risky for some, since the color makes up only 1 to 2 percent of car colors.

While there are some who choose crazy, offthe-wall colors, most Americans choose to stick with traditional colors such as white, black or silver, more than likely due to the assumption that these cars tend to have a higher resale value and less depreciation. Plus trends in car colors flip every six to eight years — opposed to every season like clothes — so with this larger investment, purchasing them requires more thought and conviction.

Color and product purchases

So what about those not-so-big purchases that you make on an everyday basis? Does color factor into those?

Seriously? Is that even a question at this point?

Of course it does — and it’s a factor companies spend millions of dollars each year researching.

No product or logo color choice is left to chance.

Want to feel sophisticated? Companies are betting you’ll opt for something in black (here’s looking at you, Little Black Dress). Concerned about the environment or your health? There’s probably a product in green packaging or a company with a green logo waiting for you. Think you feel hungry? McDonald’s, Wendy’s, Sonic and Hardee’s expect it after seeing their red logos.

So how often does this work? According to a study called “The Impact of Color in Marketing,” researchers found “up to 90 percent of snap judgments made about products can be based on color alone.” Why this works is actually a theory in itself, called the Psychology of Color.

Color popularity and the role it plays in our day-to-day-lives has been and will continue to be a cyclical trend with fashion houses, designers and marketing experts helping to determine what is “in” or “out” in a given season. However, we think Cindy Buchheit sums it up best when she says what matters most when it comes to color is what you like and what works for your life.

So choose the bright green car, wear the blue lipstick and continue to buy all the black clothing you want, because at the end of the day, it’s all about being happy.

Here’s a confession: I don’t recycle.

I did during graduate school, when there was a recycling bin right outside my door, and a truck came and picked it up once a week. Now, though, I live in a rural area with no bins and no recycling routes. For some reason, sorting my trash and taking it a few miles out of my way seems like too much effort.

So maybe here is the real confession: I am lazy. A fair-weather recycler. I want convenience.

Disposability. Non-commitment.

Because all of that means I can live however I want, without having to work so hard.

I throw out the things I don’t want anymore, and those things become somebody else’s problem.

UNLESS IT IS STILL ACTUALLY MY PROBLEM.

According to a SaveOnEnergy report, the average American produces 4.4 pounds of trash each day, and Americans produce 254 million tons of trash each year, waste that ends up in landfills. That’s enough trash to reach to the moon and back 25 times — a distance of 11,534,090 miles.

In Cape Girardeau, residents produce approximately 180 tons of trash per week from the city routes.

Mike Tripp, Cape Girardeau Public Works superintendent, says that 41,290 tons of refuse were shipped out of the transfer station in 2017 from the city routes, combined with trash brought in to the facility by individuals. By comparison, Cape Girardeau residents recycle 4,638 tons of waste per year, which means that we’re recycling only about onetenth as much as we’re throwing away, even though our recycling carts are 33 percent larger in size

than our trash carts. Pretty trashy.

It is true, however, that we now have significantly fewer landfills in the U.S. than we did in the 1980s — think nearly one-seventh in number.

Although this might sound like progress, our landfills today are much larger, and trash often has to travel much farther to get to them.

While some states in the U.S. like Arkansas have enough room for trash for the next couple of centuries, Brian Palmer states in the article “Go West, Garbage Can!” that other states such as Rhode Island have less than a decade’s worth of storage space left.

Lemons Sanitary Landfill in Dexter, Missouri — the landfill that has been the final resting place for Cape Girardeau residents’ trash for 22 years — has approximately 20 more years worth of space left at its current site. Then they will move to a different area to bury our trash.

BEYOND CONSUMERISM AND DISPOSABILITY

I can blame my laziness on the throw-away consumer society that I am a part of. That’s easy, and it is, after all, this very society that tells me easy is what I should want. But there is a deeper space within me, beckoning me beyond the cycle of consumption, waste and desire for more, calling out for something that lasts and is real, desiring to participate in the healing of our world, rather than its destruction.

Many cultures associate nature with womanhood, thinking of the earth as our cyclical mother who nurtures, produces and sustains life.

Ecofeminism draws parallels between the treatment of the earth, the treatment of women and our perceived value within the larger culture.

There is truth there, I think. The amount of goods I consume, the waste my consumption produces and the way I treat the earth can become a way that I practice reverencing womanhood.

Convenience is not what I actually want. Being human takes time. I want to live a life in which my labor, time and effort are intensive testaments to my humanness.

AN EXPERIMENT

I saved my trash for a week — I wanted to see how much waste my lifestyle produces. I kept it all in several trash cans, then consolidated.

The result? Approximately three Walmart bags full of trash headed to the landfill. That wasn’t even all of it, because I cheated and didn’t keep the paper towels I throw away at work, or all of my napkins from meals. I heard about a woman once who fit everything she threw away in one year into a glass jar; three bags, multiplied over a year, is 156 bags, give or take. Over the next 75 years, it’s 11,700 Walmart bags full of trash.

Where does this waste go once it’s out of my life?

In Cape Girardeau, trash that is not recycled is collected at the curb with trucks — the city has three automated trucks, as well as one rear loader.

The trucks take the trash to the Cape Girardeau Public Works transfer station, where they are weighed before the trash is dumped on the concrete floor of one of three bays. Once on the floor of the bays, the trash is loaded and compacted in another trailer and taken to the landfill 54 miles away in Dexter, Missouri.

Tripp says he sees a lot of trash going to the landfill that could be recycled.

DRINKING STRAWS

This past summer, I sat on a stool in Yellowstone National Park looking at a diner menu, trying to decide between a hamburger with pepper jack cheese and avocado, or a hamburger with American cheese and onion petals. The waitress sat our glasses of water down on the counter in front of us.

“Do you want straws?” she asked. We said yes — everyone except for my dad — and as she laid three down on the countertop in front of us, she told us that 500 million drinking straws are thrown away in America each day, and that each one takes 200 years to decompose in a landfill.

She smiled. “What can I get you to eat?” she asked.

Lips to glass, I scooted my still-wrapped straw back across the table to her.

It was a clever social experiment, one that has me thinking about how absurd drinking straws, plastic cutlery and paper plates really are. According to Andrew Bernier in his study “Living the Life of a Plastic Fork,” to create one pound of polypropylene — one of the main plastics used in disposable cutlery — it takes 5.12 gallons of water and 9.34 kWh of energy, which is about half of the energy used to power a television three hours a day for a month.

When creating this pound of polypropylene, 0.029 pounds of solid waste are generated, along with 1.67 pounds of carbon-dioxide emissions.

And that’s just in production, not counting the amount of carbon dioxide emitted during distribution by tractor-trailer trucks, from factory, to ocean liner (if shipped internationally), to train, to tractortrailer truck and, finally, to store.

All so I can use a plastic fork one time for 10 minutes to eat a piece of cake at a party.

The repercussions: fossil-fuel emissions are released. People who work in the factories domestically and abroad have an increased risk of cancer, neurological damage and reproductive failure.

Plastic breaks down in landfills, potentially leaching harmful contaminants into the soil and water.

But hey, at least I didn’t have to wash the dishes.

THE SOCIOLOGY OF TRASH

It is interesting what our trash says about our preferences, lifestyle, socioeconomic status and education level, all through what we are able to

consume and willing to throw away. You can learn a lot about someone — their favorite types of food, the number of times a week they order takeout, the stores they shop at — by digging through their trash.

REDUCE, REUSE ...

Most plastic cutlery can be recycled but isn’t, because forks and spoons are oddly shaped and it’s not cost effective. Many other types of trash, however, can be.

In Cape, recyclables are picked up at the curb and taken to the transfer station, where they are sorted into cardboard and single-stream material such as newspaper, aluminum cans and plastic jugs. The cardboard is baled at the transfer station and then picked up by Republic Services. They take it to St. Louis, where manufacturers buy the cardboard to reuse it.

Cape’s plastics are baled and bought by QRS Recycling in St. Louis, where they are sorted by grade of plastic, processed and then turned into flakes.

These flakes are sold to manufacturers who make plastic products such as trash cans and pallets.

Glass can be taken by residents to the drivethrough recycling facility at Cape’s transfer station.

From there, it is picked up from the transfer station

by Ripple Glass in Kansas City, Missouri, where it is broken down into glass fragments. Some are made into beer bottles; the majority goes to an Owens Corning facility in Kansas City, where it is turned into fiberglass for insulation.

According to Tripp, 80 percent of Cape Girardeau city households recycle.

Landfills, too, are finding ways to recycle the leachate and methane gases our trash emits. Many landfills collect this gas and use it to create electricity, powering thousands of homes and businesses in surrounding areas.

The not-for-profit Agbogblo, founded by university students, transforms e-waste from one of the world’s largest e-waste dumps in Ghana into furniture.

Countries around the world are leading the way in efforts to cut down on plastic usage: In England, Queen Elizabeth II banned plastic straws and bottles from the Royal Estates in February 2018.

France dictated disposable plates and cups must be

comprised of 50 percent biologically sourced materials by 2020. Bangladesh banned plastic bags in 2002, and many countries around the world followed.

The U.S. may not be on board, but we as individuals can be.

YOUR TECHNOLOGY AND CHINA’S CHILDREN

I use an iPhone 5s, from 2014.

Last semester when I was teaching high school, I pulled my phone out of my pocket.

One of my students said, “Ms. Pohlman, is that a 5s? It’s about time for a new phone, don’t you think?”

Besides the fact my storage is perpetually full and there are a few dents around the corners because I like the way the phone looks without a case, my phone works perfectly fine.

Better than fine. And I like it — it has never occurred to me that I might need a new one.

Call me naive, but it struck me as bizarre that I might, just because there have been four new iPhone series released since mine.

My student’s mindset is, however, how cell phone manufacturers and service providers who make their money from our desire for the latest things have trained us to think. The result? We’re producing e-waste from our old phones, laptops and printers at alarming rates.

E-waste is a term referring to the old technology we dispose of, and its exportation and importation is big business. Baher Kamal writes in “Where Do 50 Million Tonnes a Year of Toxic E-Waste Go?” that much of the world’s technological waste ends up in developing countries, specifically in Ghana, India, Pakistan and Brazil. Often it is smuggled into these countries by transnational criminal gangs who find loopholes in importation laws by classifying e-waste as “secondhand goods.” With few laws to regulate the de-manufacturing of these goods in developing countries, the precious elements inside the electronics are often mined through open burning, releasing harmful emissions such as lead, mercury and cadmium into the

environment and workers’ lungs.

Guiyu, a city in Southeastern China, has been a much-talked-about hub of e-waste demanufacturing since the early 2000s.

According to TIME article “Guiyu, China,” the mining of the used electronics for lead, gold, copper and other valuable elements found in our electronic circuit boards, wiring and chips generated $75 million in revenue per year for the city in which many small, family-owned de-manufacturing businesses employ tens of thousands of people.

As of 2018, the Chinese government has blocked all imports of 24 types of foreign trash and is creating government-regulated, environmentally friendly facilities to de-manufacture e-waste.

Even with this ban, however, this farming village transformed into a technological de-manufacturing hub will be dealing with the effects of our improper e-waste disposal for years to come. A Shantou University study reported Guiyu has the highest level of cancercausing dioxins in the world, as well as an elevated rate of miscarriages. The area’s children suffer from extremely high rates of lead poisoning. The city’s water is poisonous.

A FINAL GLANCE

Confession: I still like drinking from plastic straws at restaurants. I reach for the plastic lids at fast food restaurants to put on my paper cup out of habit, even though the cup would still work without one. I use plastic forks at potlucks.

I take for granted that these things are normal, because I have been raised in a society that says they are.

They aren’t — normal, I mean. It’s just that my lifestyle — and our culture’s lifestyle — depends upon us not noticing or questioning it.

One way we know something has become normalized is when people no longer see or notice it; noticing the strange for long enough moves us to action.

1. Tie your trash bag closed.

2. Put grocery bags, newspaper sleeves, shredded paper and packing peanuts together into one bag so they don’t blow away in the wind.

3. Don’t overload your trash cart — the lid should be able to close properly in order for the automated truck to be able to pick it up.

4. Keep the lid of your trash cart closed.

5. Put three feet of space around all sides of your trash cart, for the automated arm of the truck to be able to pick up your cart without hitting anything.

Hannah March Sanders is a Cape Girardeau artist who focuses on environmental issues in her work. Also a professor of art at Southeast Missouri State University and area head of printmaking, as well as the letterpress area coordinator of Catapult Press at Catapult Creative House, Sanders uses upcycled and repurposed fabrics in her work. She gets the material from Goodwill, as well as from her own and her family members’ old clothes to make her pieces. She even uses the scraps of material that would otherwise go to waste from the woodcut prints she makes.

Sanders began using repurposed materials in her art out of necessity when she was an undergraduate student with a limited budget, and more purposefully during graduate school.

“One of my graduate professors always said if you have this stuff available to you, be creative and make art out of that,” she says.

“Don’t feel like you have to go out and buy the best paper or the best ink to make your work, because it’s not as much about the materials as about how you use them.”

Sanders’ latest series is a collaboration with her husband Blake.

The series features crocheted upcycled fabrics with machine sewing, appliqué and snaps, siteresponsive installations that can be displayed as rag rugs on floors or as wall hangings. Each piece links energy use with family life by using repurposed domestic materials and displaying on the piece a word that is environmental

and domestic, such as “dependence/dependents,” “exhaust” and “spill.”

“People are always building a nest for themselves without thinking maybe of the impact of that on the greater world,” Sanders says of her and her husband’s project.

“People either have this feeling that the environment isn’t getting

worse, there is no climate change, or they have this feeling of, it’s happening but there’s nothing we can do about it. I feel like both of those are not productive. I think you have to recognize your own contribution to it and what you personally could do.”

I think it’s beneficial to color because kids have dreams to be good at art and I do, too. It helps kids get better at coloring in the lines, and it helps kids in school. Kids use math for art, and it also helps some kids focus in school. You can show your true colors in art.

Coloring is a great way to let out all your anger and stress. Practicing is the best way to get better; even if you mess up, you can still use the art you were doing to make something unique and beautiful. So that is why I think it is beneficial to color.

Lavender Oh so lovely.

You know it: some things are all show, pretty on the outside, but not so much when you dig a little deeper.

Then there are those that are both beautiful and substantial.

That’s lavender. It’s a versatile, tried-and-true plant: Egyptians used it for embalming in ancient times, the Arabs used it for medicinal purposes in the 10th century and the British used it for perfume and furniture polish during the Victorian Era. In modern times, it is used for a wide range of purposes, from food to soaps to anxiety relief.

Oh, yeah. And it looks and smells lovely.

There are more than 30 species of lavender, which come in shades of purple, yellow and gray, to name a few. It is a plant of endurance that prefers hot, rocky areas, growing natively in regions by the Mediterranean Sea, as well as in southern Europe, northern and eastern Africa, southwest Asia, southeast India and Middle Eastern countries.

These climates might make it seem like lavender can’t grow in the Midwest. But it can. (After all, we know about grit here in the Heartland, too.)

Pamela LeFevre, owner of LeFevre Lavender Dreams in southern Illinois, discovered the beauty of lavender on a trip to Santa Fe, New Mexico, with her parents and two high schoolaged daughters in 2015.

“It’s all over, it grows so easily out west,” LeFevre says of the plant. “It’s in people’s front yards, fields. We went to different farms, and we just loved it.”

Inspired by this trip and in between careers as her daughters were getting older, LeFevre decided to try her hand at growing lavender and making natural bath products back at her Midwestern home, approximately 40 miles outside of Cape Girardeau. Her business, which is a 325-plant family affair operated by herself, her parents and her daughters, is now in its third year.

Lavender is harvested in June in the Midwest and takes approximately two weeks to dry, hanging upside down. At her farm, LeFevre dries it in a cabin and in unfinished areas of her house. The plant doesn’t like humidity and needs a rock-based soil mixture and lots of sunlight to thrive. If soil is too acidic or receives too much water, lavender will not grow.

“You can’t just put them in the ground,” Lefevre says of the plants.

Lefevre notes that growing lavender is “a lot of work,” but worth it, especially with all of its versatile uses. “It’s something different for here,” she says. “And it’s just beautiful.”

1 tray ice cubes 1/4 cup dried lavender 2 cups boiling water 3/4 cup white sugar 8 lemons 5 cups cold water, or as needed

USES FOR L AVEN DE R Cooking — Use lavender in cheeses and cookies, on chicken and in lattes and teas.

Sleeping Help and Anxiety Relief — Put a sachet of dried lavender under your pillow at night, or spray your pillow with lavender linen spray to help you catch some z’s.

Calm Irritated Skin — Reduce the redness and itchiness of eczema, acne and dry skin, as well as treat minor burns with lavender oil.

Place ice cubes into a two-quart pitcher.

Place the lavender into a bowl, and pour boiling water over it. Allow to steep for about 10 minutes, then strain out the lavender and discard. Mix the sugar into the hot lavender water, then pour into the pitcher with ice.

Squeeze the juice from the lemons into the pitcher, getting as much juice out as you can. Top off the pitcher with cold water, and stir. Taste, and adjust lemon juice or sugar if desired. Pour into tall glasses, and enjoy!

Grass greens, teals, reds. Royal blues, purples, yellows. The walls of one room in Michelle Outman’s Cape Girardeau home look like Kenya, lined with colorful jewelry in all shades, made from recycled glass and paper beads, bones and ostrich egg shells.

The jewelry, scarves and other home goods are made by 30 women who are widows in the rural village of Kinangap, in central Kenya. These women are members of h.o.w? Ministry, which Michelle is the executive director. The Ministry works to fight poverty by providing jobs for women and education for their children in Kinangap. To do this, h.o.w? Ministry sells the products of the women’s craftswomanship in Cape Girardeau, Missouri.

The women, who range from twentysomethings to women in their nineties, knit and crochet. Some of them sew, weave baskets and make jewelry. In addition to being artisans, they are subsistence farmers, each of them owning one-fourth of an acre to five acres of land. They sell produce and milk cows, selling milk to the local dairy depo. All of their children attend school. h.o.w? Ministry recently dedicated their newly built Kinangap Women’s

We want to be her friend.

Empowerment Center in January 2018, where they held their fourth annual women’s conference. At it, the women learned to shear sheep, card and spin wool, and weave on a flat loom.

Keziah Kariuki, Kenya coordinator of h.o.w? Ministry, is originally from Nairobi, and now lives in Kinangap.

She is part of the Kikuyu tribe, one of Kenya’s 42 tribes and the tribe the h.o.w? Ministry women are from.

Here, Kariuki discusses why color is a central component of Kenyan culture and her own journey to serving fulltime in ministry. flourish: What inspires you?

Keziah Kariuki: In Africa, we have a lot of color around and sometimes the colors also reflect our feelings and our emotions, so bright colors would mean a happy moment. Dull colors would mean you’re either mourning, or it’s a sad event. So mostly when people are happy, especially when the women are happy doing something, mostly those are the colors they choose.

The other inspirations that come is also the culture — different cultures have different colors. My [Kikuyu] culture, we like the color brown. We grew up in highland areas, and so most of our activities are ploughing our land — most of us, we prefer those colors because they don’t show dirt very often … It would also be boring for you to wear one color, so people prefer having a bit of flowers all over their dresses because even with that, it doesn’t show

a lot of dirt. f: How did you come to work at h.o.w? Ministry?

KK: My mom passed on when I was in high school — I had just graduated high school, and she died from HIV, and so after that I went to start living with my uncle who owns a children’s home. So, staying there and seeing the work he was doing, I was stepping in to help most of the time. I would leave everything and follow him and go and take care of this child and make sure the child was well when we came back.

The other thing is, I got married.

So I met my husband [David], and my husband is a former street boy who grew up in a children’s home. So looking around, I was like, ‘Okay, I think this is where I was supposed to be.’ And then at some point when I graduated, I had gone to try and work in a normal organization, and it wasn’t the same.

I felt like I wasn’t impacting anyone with anything, and I just felt lonely.

You know, sometimes you go to a job, and one morning I got a message and said, I think I’m in the wrong profession. I can use what I have learned, which is accountancy, to do the work of God. And I just want to be in ministry. There’s a kind of fulfillment where you don’t look at the finances, you don’t look at the challenges, sometimes you are just ready to go and be with these people and impact their lives.

What color is your personality?

Pink, because it makes everything happy! It is the best color for shoes, lipstick, peonies, and macarons! All of which I love!

Oh boy, what color describes my personality? The first color that popped into my head was yellow.

While yellow isn’t my favorite color, it’s a color that brings warmth and cheer — something I strive to do in my everyday life.

I’m pretty much basic so…gray? But not dreary, cloudy sky gray. Picture your favorite old t-shirt that fits just right. A little worn, a little wrinkly, but super comfortable and goes with everything. I’m that gray.

Blue would have to be the color that best describes my personality — it’s a color with many different shades. Most of all, blue is the color of the sky, which is one of my favorite things to photograph!

Pink because pink stands for love and I’m loveable, friendly, joyful and talented!

I’m going to go with blue.

When I was in Leadership Cape, we did the True Colors® test and I was a blue which sums me up pretty well — I’m empathetic, idealistic, I generally like people and can be too trusting.

Who made the world?

Who made the swan, and the black bear?

Who made the grasshopper?

This grasshopper, I mean — the one who has flung herself out of the grass, the one who is eating sugar out of my hand, who is moving her jaws back and forth instead of up and down — who is gazing around with her enormous and complicated eyes.

Now she lifts her pale forearms and thoroughly washes her face.

Now she snaps her wings open, and floats away.

I don’t know exactly what a prayer is.

I do know how to pay attention, how to fall down into the grass, how to kneel down in the grass, how to be idle and blessed, how to stroll through the fields, which is what I have been doing all day.
