My most treasured possession is a ring made from a spoon. When it was still a straight, long rectangular handle, cupped like a palm at the end, it belonged to either my great-grandma or my grandma, who both passed away before I was two years old. My grandmas were farm women who dedicated their lives to caring for their families without asking for recognition. They knew what it meant to conserve and innovate, to touch dirt and be filled with quiet joy.

These women whom I will never know and can never touch again held with their own hands this circle of silver I wear around my right middle finger. They touched it when it was functional, when it stretched from fingers to soup or cereal.

Now it hugs me — repurposed beauty — as I talk, type, touch.

My mom and sister have rings made from these spoons, too. We had them cut and hammered into finger-size circles at a craft fair, to remind us of the sacred lineage we are from when we are separated by time or distance.

Sacramentals are ordinary objects that draw us into communion with the holy. They are tangible shapes, symbols of the invisible truths that matter, like love and strength and lineage. My ring connects me with the strongest women I know, reminding me of how they have shaped me.

Each piece in this issue of flourish explores an aspect of the concept “Shape.” “The Slow Fashion Movement” meditates upon how we shape other women's lives through the way we choose to spend our money. An interview with ceramicist Candace Taylor delves into what it means to shape something from clay. The story about the Tiger Lilies looks at how young ladies interact across generations, shaping our future.

We hope this magazine feels like breathing, a space of renewal for your soul. We hope it is a gathering-place for us to share our stories, our questions, our lives — a sacramental that shapes our community and connects us with women of courage.

Roar of a Tiger, Beauty of a Lily Let’s take a note from these lovely ladies.

Looking back, the middle-school years were the most socially difficult years of my life. I was trying to figure out who I wanted to be — I was not quite a kid, but I was still far from “adulting.”

Don’t get me wrong. I had an amazing childhood, but those years were hard, and if I had a do-over button, I would start there, because what I know now is those years matter. They matter a lot.

Turns out, I’m not alone in believing this.

Cape Central Middle School, under the direction of school counselor Becky Wright, has recently developed Tiger Lilies — a program that focuses on positive self-image, inner strength and social relationships for fifth- and sixth-grade girls. For one hour each week, these young ladies are empowered to build confidence, cultivate character and ultimately shape the trajectory of their lives by adopting healthy life choices.

The great news? It’s working.

Since beginning the program in September,

the Tiger Lilies have braved the runway during an inner-beauty fashion show, used their newly developed etiquette skills on a visit to Cape Senior Center and practiced team building with the Lady Redhawks. What’s next? The Tiger Lilies will be inspired by women who serve in the military, breathe deep during yoga and change a tire with the school custodian. Now that’s a lineup.

“None of this would be possible without the support of our community,” says Wright. “We want them to get out there and see the possibilities that are open to them.”

While the Tiger Lilies program was originally was created for girls identified as “at-risk,” it has quickly blossomed into a beautiful, diverse arrangement of almost 70 young ladies, all growing together in sisterhood.

While this one program won’t eliminate every awkward middle-school moment, it’s definitely here to help.

BY AIRYONA JONES I enjoy meeting new people at Tiger Lilies and learning how to be a young lady. I have learned about manners, like not putting my elbows on the table or wiping my hands on my pants. We even got to do a fashion show where we talked about how important our inner beauty is. The word I used to describe my inner beauty was BOLD. I feel like Tiger Lilies will help me learn to express myself and be friendlier. My favorite thing so far has been meeting the Southeast Lady Redhawks basketball team. I would really like to be a chemist someday, and being a Tiger Lily today will help me reach that goal.

These charming two-legged Lilies are learning social graces and plain oldfashioned manners. They first arrived at the Senior Center bearing gifts of handmade flowers. This was a thoughtful gesture, proving to be a fun way to meet new people and initiate a conversation — not that most of us seniors need an excuse to start a conversation. The same breeze that blew in the flowers — both the Tiger Lilies and handmade varieties — brought with it rays of sunshine who left the dreaded electronic devices elsewhere.

They nourish, they jiggle, they hang low and high, and we are thankful when we find out they’re healthy — these are breasts we’re talking about, and they come in all shapes and sizes.

This can make shopping for bras a nightmare.

FROM BUYING THE WRONG SIZE TO NOT

knowing what works best for your breast shape (yep, there are specific breast shapes), bra shopping can be a challenge.

But what is it about this task that makes women everywhere want to dive back underneath the covers screaming, "Oh no, not today?”

For many women, the reluctance to go bra shopping comes from not knowing what style or size to buy, or from spending money in the past on bras that never get worn.

A study in 2008 by bra manufacturer Triumph found that 80 percent of women wear the wrong bra style or size for their breast type. So how do you know if you’re wearing the wrong bra?

According to Kriste Martin, owner of Perfect Fit Bra Boutique in downtown Cape Girardeau, usually comfort level (or lack of) is the first sign you're not wearing the right bra size or style.

Things that should not happen when wearing bras: 1. Tugging, pulling and readjusting 2. Underwires poking and pressing into breast tissue 3. Bands that are not parallel to your back So just how important is a properly fitted bra? In one word — very. Wearing the wrong bra is not only uncomfortable, it can make you look heavier and lead to physical ailments such as headaches and backaches.

From demi to balconette to push-up, the styles and shapes of bras vary, and not all styles are meant for all breast shapes and sizes. “Some styles are only manufactured up to a certain size range,” Martin says.

Good news, though, for all you larger-busted ladies out there: the industry is becoming more inclusive, according to Martin. “We are starting to see styles that once were only available in smaller sizes, such as the bralette or the strapless bra. At one time it was very difficult to purchase a strapless bra in sizes over a 38 DD. Now strapless bras come in a wide range of sizes, and are quite supportive.”

Ready to finally own a bra that fits? Consider having a professional fitting. It’s relatively painless. A few questions, measurements and trying on of styles for your breast shape with the guidance of someone trained to spot a properly fitted bra, and you'll be on your way.

So before you dole out another penny of your hard-earned money for something you'll never wear, take time to have a professional find the right bra for you. You'll be glad you did. Trust us.

BR A ISSUES DECODED Here are a few telltale signs you are wearing the wrong size bra and tips on how you can fix the problem:

Problem: Your cups spilleth over.

Solution: Try going up a cup size and bending over when putting the bra on, to ensure all of your breasts are in the cups.

Problem:

The straps are

painful.

Solution: The straps and the band need to be working together. If the straps are doing all the work, try going down a band size.

Problem: It LOOKS like you have back fat.

Solution: Don’t panic! It’s not fat; it’s a too small band size on your bra.

Yep, there are specific breast shapes.

Problem: You can slide the band up and down.

Solution: T he band is supposed t o be doing part of the heavy lifting in partnership with the straps, so if you can move it up and down, it’s not pulling its weight in the relationship.

Try going down a band size.

Problem: All your bras are exactly the same size.

Solution: Sizing in bras can vary by manufacturer and style, so use the numbers provided in your bra fitting as a baseline. Experiment with sizing until you get the one that looks and feels right to you.

For years breasts have been described using words such as conical, thin and omega. Then in 2016 an online bra retailer, Third Love, coined nine types of breasts using more common and descriptive words, such as bell shaped and relaxed. Here is a look at the Third Love dictionary and which bra fits best for each breast type.

Athletic

Round

This type of breasts tend to be wider and more muscular with less tissue.

Try: a wireless bra with a thick band for support.

If your breasts are almost perfect spheres, you have round breasts.

Try: A balconette bra to accentuate natural cleavage and provide full cups.

Asymmetric

Relaxed

Don’t quite have a matching set of twins? Not surprising. In fact, it’s very common — 90 percent of women have breasts that vary up to 15 to 20 percent in size.

Try: A push-up bra that can provide support and lift to equal things out.

Not quite as perky as you once were?

Then you probably have relaxed breasts. This type tends to have tissue that is laxer and nipples that point down.

Try: A t-shirt or a push-up style bra to add lift.

Bell Shaped

Side Set

Exactly as its name says, this type of breast is shaped like a bell, slimmer on top and fuller on the bottom.

Try: A T-shirt or full coverage style that provides lift.

Some women naturally have breasts that are a little more spread apart, leaving a space between their breasts.

Try: A front closure bra to bring things inward.

East West

Teardrop

Have nipples that point in different directions? If so, you have East/West type breasts.

Try: A push-up bra to bring things back together.

Ahh, teardrop breasts. These are breasts that are almost perfectly round but are slightly less full on top.

Try: Anything. Almost all bra styles should work on you!

Slender Slender breasts are smaller, narrower breasts that have nipples that tend to point downward.

Try: A push-up bra can give you the upward lift you need and extra padding if you need it.

Margaret Atwood’s 1985 feminist dystopian classic (recently made into a Hulu original series) explores the ways women gain autonomy while living under a futuristic totalitarian government in which they serve men.

The novel’s narrative shifts between past and present, while telling the stories of Offred and multiple other handmaids.

Reclaim the '90s jean shift dress by layering a shirt under it or a sweater over it and belting for shape.

Touch your shirt. Someone had a hand in making it. Think of your shirt like a letter. From a woman you don't know, and now her handiwork is wrapped around you, your body, in this place, like a hug. Think of it as a hug. From a woman in India. China. Bangladesh.

Maybe she has a child or two, whom she loves like you love whomever you love most. Maybe she woke up late this morning and it was chaotic for her to put on pants, sweep her hair back, try to scrape together breakfast for her kids.

Or maybe she had a slow morning, time to contemplate her day as she ate her toast. Maybe she stubbed her toe on the way to work and cursed under her breath, even though she swore to herself yesterday she was trying to stop.

Maybe she loves her job, going to a factory to make clothes. Maybe she hates it.

Maybe most days she does it because it is what she does, and we all need money somehow to sustain ourselves and the people we love.

Take a moment and realize this woman who made your shirt. Pray or contemplate or dance or shout or shoot a basket or blink really fast or do whatever it is you do, in thanks for her.

“MADE IN BANGL ADESH”

In 2012 a fire in a Bangladesh textile factory killed 112 people. The people there made garments for American and European stores, brands in most of our closets. There were not emergency exits in the building, and managers stopped workers from finding an escape. The event drew

attention to the dangerous working conditions the fast fashion industry creates through its pursuit of profit.

I recently stumbled upon the terms “fast” and “slow” fashion while faced with the responsibility of how to spend my first salaried paycheck. I have felt the little itchy tag on the insides of my clothes and dismissed the three words “Made in India” my whole life, even cutting these tags out of shirts to avoid the scratchy annoyance. But, what do these words actually mean?

Fast fashion functions under a disposable mindset, rolling out the latest trends for consumers to purchase at cheaper prices, clothes that will be worn while they are trendy, and thrown away when they are not. In order to make the highest profit, fast fashion often hires out labor to factories in which they can pay the workers low wages, where working conditions are unsafe. Many of these workers are women and children.

D E VA L U I N G W O M E N ’ S W O R K

Machines make it easy to undervalue the work of women. In “Women and the Rise of the Novel: A Feminist-Marxist Theory,” Josephine Donovan discusses how the value of traditionally female work such as baking and sewing came to be devalued by our society and economic system.

She explains that before the widespread use of machines, our society operated under a use-value system, in which women baked a pie or sewed a dress to be used by someone with whom they were immediately

connected, such as their neighbor or daughter. There was not a monetary exchange in this deal; instead, the relationship between creator and user was based upon emotional ties. Women were artisans, co-creators in building homes and sustaining.

When machines began to be used in the manufacture of goods, however, respect for the art women created — and as a result, respect for women ourselves — began to erode. Our society's mindset switched from one of use-value to one of exchange-value, a system in which goods are produced with the intent of selling or bartering.

Rather than a focus on the emotional relationship present between artisan and user, emphasis was now placed upon the monetary worth of an item.

The more of an item that could be produced, the more money that was made for the person who owned the machines. The person who ran the machine to create the item was often paid meagerly. Because the machines could produce goods much more efficiently than a real, live woman hand sewing together 400 pieces of fabric to make a quilt, machines garnered more profit, decreasing the price of goods and making women's contributions unnecessary.

I think, perhaps, we are living in a time when our mindsets are beginning to shift and again recognize the value in making something by hand for someone we love. Again, I hope, we are beginning to uphold the dignity of traditionally female work, valuing process and what it can teach us. It seems to me, rather than joining the exchange-value

mindset that discredits female artisanship, we should reclaim these arts for ourselves, glorifying the craftswomanship it takes to create them, and celebrating the women who choose to do this.

These are our roots.

The slow fashion movement does the opposite of what we’ve been trained to do as consumers: it tells us to buy less. It tells us to

buy pieces that are timeless, made well and last. It tells us to use our paychecks conscientiously, buying products that support living wages, education and empowerment for the people who make them. It ensures children aren’t the ones making shoes for me to wear twice, at the cost of their education.

their fashion lines in sustainable fabrics and ethically sourced tailoring — valuing handiwork, people and the connection between. These companies are creating fair-paying jobs and education opportunities for the women and children in the communities in which they work.

The drawback for the consumer?

Pieces made locally or by hand are more expensive, because they take more time and the creators are compensated fairly for their time and skill.

For those of us who can't afford to pay more money for clothes that have been ethically sourced, perhaps we can embody the spirit of slow fashion

through shopping at thrift stores, borrowing, repurposing. Having less, waiting.

The other day I found myself pulled magnetically into the women's clothing area of one of my favorite chain stores, face-to-face with the most beautiful black floral jumpsuit

I have ever seen. I am a sucker for black, floral, V-necks, fitted waists, and things that are a little weird, like jumpsuits, and yep, you guessed it, this one had it all. Here I was, days after I'd discovered slow fashion and vowed not to keep buying things to cover my body that cost another person more dearly than it cost me, and I was already feeling my resolve wavering.

After all, I am one person against a world of people who will, out of necessity, ignorance or circumstance, probably never stop buying clothes made in places in which people are treated poorly — could my opting out

It was right after this experience that I stumbled into another of my favorite chain stores and upon Sarah Lazarovic's book “A Bunch of Pretty Things I Did Not Buy.” It was pretty — orange cover, watercolor art illustrating the insides, biting authorial wit.

I bought it. Ironic, I know. But in it, it contained a truth I need to remember: I have the power to choose. My desires for more don't have to control me; I can, as Lazarovic states, be content with looking at something beautiful and knowing I don't have to possess it in order to still be whole. I feel like a throwback from fifth-grade

clothes were made in a tiny U.S. town or by an average woman anywhere in the “developed” world, would the company tell me these women's stories, or would they be rendered irrelevant?

In the dangerous comment vortex below Hobbes' article, Savanah Case makes a good point: “Just because most US citizens do not wash their recyclable yogurt containers and [instead] throw them in the trash doesn't mean I will.”

My dad once told me when I was worrying about something: it's not my job to save the whole world.

Henri Nouwen said it this way: “We are not called to save the world, solve all problems and help all people. But we each have our own unique call, in our families, in our work, in our world … then we will discover that our faithfulness to a small task is the most healing response to the illnesses of our time.”

Maybe I am not going to enact a law that creates change — I hope that someone with that power does, and soon. But I can wash my recyclable yogurt container, or say “No” to a shirt.

A NOTE ON HYPOCRISY

and the floral jumpsuit story: as my conscience warred with my unsated desire for the jumpsuit, I became agitated and lashed out at my well-intentioned mother who was shopping with me. It was even her birthday.

I do not want to forego harming women in other parts of the world only to harm the woman who allowed me to be in the world, or any other women — or men — with whom I interact on a regular basis.

international companies regulate factory working conditions at the expense of workers' care, Hobbes argues we should enact laws that give this power to the governments of the countries themselves.

I think he's right. But in the meantime, do I continue to buy from stores that use sweatshops to produce their clothing?

Perhaps slow fashion is, after all, just a great advertising ploy, using the women whom I want to help, as well as my need to feel the connection that has been lost in an exchange-value economy, to sell me things.

Is it even right to use the stories of women living in poverty to sell clothes? Are these companies romanticizing and exotifying human beings? If the

I don't know how to go through our daily lives without being weighed down by the guilt of all this knowledge. I don't think guilt is the answer, though. What has happened has happened, but that doesn't mean it has to continue to. Perhaps we can be appreciators of beauty while at the same time acknowledging its entanglement with injustice, and speaking about that. Perhaps we can make small choices, like buying our clothes from thrift stores, borrowing from friends' closets, buying less. Perhaps we can practice gratitude for the makers of the things we take for granted.

Why do you choose to live in Cape?

How did you come to Cape?

I moved away from Cape to Washington when I was 22 years old, where I volunteered for a year doing AmeriCorps. I loved working with AmeriCorps, so I decided to volunteer another year in Portland, Ore. After that, I finished my horticulture degree at University of Minnesota in Minneapolis and spent some time traveling. I had worked at organic vegetable farms during summers off from school and after college managed a couple of nonprofit vegetable farms. I began missing my family and my Missouri roots, so my husband Ross and I decided to move us and Laughing Stalk down to Missouri. We have been here for seven years now.

My husband Rex is from Cape, and he moved back from Richmond, Va., where we met, to join his family's business in 2000. We were engaged in 2004, and I moved here at that point. Being a beach person I never imagined living in the Midwest, but I must say it is wonderful! The people here are amazing. Truly some of the kindest and most generous people I have ever met.

Who is a person who has shaped you?

“The One Straw Revolution” by Masanobu Fukuoka, a Japanese farmer and philosopher.

That’s an easy one for me! I would have to say my husband Rex. We first started dating in 1998 and have both grown so much. I’ve never met a more loving, smart, compassionate and hard-working man. He is always there to encourage me, and I am learning from him constantly. God has blessed me with a wonderful partner.

Place that has shaped you:

Who shapes your photography?

I think Missouri has shaped me the most. I have never had a place lay so heavy on my mind. When we were deciding if we should move back, I couldn’t quit thinking about Missouri: the people, the landscape, the river.

At the heart of it all are the children! There is something about the way a little girl’s eyes light up when she puts on a big, beautiful dress — her entire demeanor changes. Or a little boy playing with a sailboat on the lake wearing a vintage outfit, letting his imagination run wild about fishing or dinosaurs.

They are so pure and genuine, and the joy on their little faces is priceless. In my studio, I want them to feel special, knowing that this space is just for them. My goal is for them to want to stay and tell Mom they aren’t ready to go just yet!

Book that has shaped you:

How would you describe your style?

I like to wear things that make people smile, or even laugh. I have a big wool sweater that has a big bouquet of daisies on the front and back. When I wear that I get more smiles from people than normal. So maybe smile-style. Is that a thing? Ha!

What or who shapes your style?

I am inspired most by vintage styles. Working at Annie Laurie’s, I get to see all kinds of cool vintage pieces. It’s fun to mix vintage style with newer trends, like a wild shirt from the 50’s with some high-waisted red pants. Yes!

Tell us something else about yourself: My faith is extremely important to me. I try to keep God the priority in my life. Then family. Then my business. Whenever things get out of that particular order, life has a tendency to get chaotic and troublesome. And who wants that?

Take care of your body (We want you around for a while.)

Being healthy doesn’t mean you have to give up all bad foods and do hours of exercise each day. Food is a fuel your body needs to function properly, and it shouldn’t be used as a treat. Your source of foods should come primarily from proteins, veggies and clean carbs, such as chicken, fish, green veggies, sweet potatoes and brown rice. You can still have that burger and ice cream once in a while, just not daily.

Your body craves healthy foods; once you see how much better healthy eating makes you feel, it becomes a lifestyle, and you no longer have to “diet.”

In addition to a clean diet, add in 20 to 30 minutes of cardio exercise such as walking, biking or swimming at least every other day, and 15 minutes of weight training at home or in the gym. Here are some examples of exercises you can do to help you take shape. Do three sets of 10 reps of each.

TRICEPS OVERHEAD

Sit on the end of a flat bench with a dumbbell in each hand held at arm’s length. The elbows should be close to the torso. Rotate the palms of the hands so that they are facing inward in a neutral position. Bend your arm at the elbow in a curling motion.

Triceps overhead exercises the triceps.

Grasp a dumbbell with both hands and hold it overhead at arm’s length. Move your arm over your head, down and back up to the starting position.

TRICEPS KICKBACKS

SUMO SQUAT

Triceps kickbacks — you guessed it — work the triceps. Start with a dumbbell in each hand and your palms facing your torso. Keeping your back straight with a slight bend in the knees, bend forward at the waist. Your torso should be almost parallel to the floor. Make sure to keep your head up. Bend your arm at the elbow and push it back, then bring back to the starting position.

Sumo squat is a lower-body strength exercise. The wide stance emphasizes the muscles of the inner thigh. The movement also allows for use of heavier resistance loads vs. the traditional squat. Stand with feet wider than shoulder-width apart and your toes slightly turned out. Bend knees to squat down, and then move back up to starting position.

One of the keys to cleaner eating for my family is having a home-cooked dinner. This doesn’t mean several hours of cooking every night. On crazy days, I rely on my slow cooker.

SLOW COOKER BEEF-AND-SWEET P O TAT O C H I L I F R O M C O O K I N G LI G HT 1 pound 90 percent lean ground sirloin 4 cups (3/4-in.) cubed unpeeled sweet potato (about 1 1/4 lb.)

2 1/2 cups unsalted beef stock 2 cups chopped yellow onion 1 cup chopped red bell pepper 1/4 cup unsalted tomato paste 2 tablespoons chili powder 1 1/2 teaspoons kosher salt 1 1/2 teaspoons ground cumin 1/2 teaspoon ground red pepper 8 garlic cloves, minced 2 (14.5-oz.) cans unsalted diced tomatoes, undrained 1 (15-oz.) can unsalted black beans, rinsed and drained 1 cup chopped fresh cilantro, divided 4 ounces sharp cheddar cheese, shredded Heat a large non-stick skillet over mediumhigh. Add beef to pan; cook, stirring often, just until crumbled and mostly browned, about 3 minutes. (Beef will not be fully cooked.)

Remove from heat. Combine sweet potatoes and next 11 ingredients (through black beans) in a 6-quart slow cooker. Stir in beef. Cover and cook on LOW for 7 hours. Stir in 1/2 cup cilantro. Ladle chili into 8 bowls; top with cheese and remaining cilantro.

WALKING LUNGES

Walking lunges work the lower body. Step forward, flexing knee and hip of front leg until knee of rear leg is almost in contact with floor. Stand on forward leg with assistance of rear leg. Lunge forward with opposite leg.

WHAT DO YOU LIKE ABOUT WORKING WITH CLAY? The way it feels in your hands. It's the most hands-on medium. I also like how messy you can get. With ceramics you can kind of let go, and I really like the feeling of that. I like how process-heavy it is, how you have to take steps before your final piece comes out. That gives you time to really reflect on things conceptually.

WHAT DOES CLAY FEEL LIKE IN YOUR HANDS? It depends on what kind of clay and how dry it is — sometimes it can be really hard to work with. The best feeling is when you get a new bag of clay and you open it and — this is going to sound disgusting — but usually mold can form on it because it's wet and stuck in a plastic bag for so long, but it smells good, like...this earthy, fresh smell. A new bag of clay feels soft, wedging it is just a good feeling in your hands — it's soft like you're getting a massage, but then you're also doing the work.

HOW DO YOU KNOW WHEN TO START OVER ON A PIECE AND WHEN TO KEEP GOING WITH ITS CREATION? It's kind of hard to explain that feeling. You plan things out and you have that idea of how you want something to look — of course, when you're on the wheel, that's something that can totally change. There have been times when I'll be on the wheel and I'm like, 'This is what I wanted, but I think it would look better if it were taller.' When working with wet clay, if you mess up your cup it's not the end of the world.

You can make another one, and who knows?

The next one might be even better, or you'll learn something new.

HOW DO YOU KNOW WHEN A PIECE IS FINISHED? As an artist you get this feeling inside like, 'This is done. This is complete.'

HOW HAS BEING A CERAMICIST SHAPED YOUR WORLDVIEW? I learn to take a step back, look at things and be more patient as a person. You're always growing. You can't just come to school for art and think, 'Oh, well I've done the foundation classes, I've taken a couple of ceramics classes, I'm a good artist.' There are artists who are still growing, and they're in their 30s and 40s, changing. It's a constant thing, because people are constantly changing.

Shaping your children Benefits of “Green Time” SHANNON ANDERSON

Hopefully as you’re reading this, the springtime is almost here and another cold winter will soon be behind us. If you’re like my family, a little extra space from each other sounds like a pretty good idea.

Springtime has always symbolized a time of growth, exploration and adventure for me. I grew up in the country. More significantly, I grew up at a time when kids actually went outside to play. In so many ways, I think it was a much healthier way for a kid to grow up.

So with spring fast approaching, I thought I would cover a few of the many ways outside play — also known as "green time" — can benefit kids.

BENEFIT #1: “GREEN TIME” MAY REDUCE SYMPTOMS OF ADHD. There has been a decent amount of research in the past decade or so that suggests “green time” can reduce some symptoms of Attention-Deficit/Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD). Studies suggest hyperactivity can be reduced and attention and focus can be increased with as little as 20 minutes of outside “green time” per day.

If your child has been diagnosed with ADHD, there is certainly enough research to warrant giving it a try. When the weather’s nice, start with 20 minutes playing ball in the yard before evening homework time. Watch for improvements in focus and attention as your child does his or her homework afterward. It’s simple to try, and what could it hurt? There aren’t any

real negative side effects of playing in the yard for 20 minutes a day before homework time.

BENEFIT #2: MENTAL AND EMOTIONAL WELL-BEING. Playing and exploring in your yard or at a park lets kids be adventurous in ways they can’t be indoors. Playing tag, kicking a soccer ball or exploring the woods on a nature hike is a completely different experience than playing three hours of video games, right? In nature, kids use more of their senses. They can see, hear, smell and touch things in the world around them. This will strengthen their imagination, improve creativity and even build confidence.

BENEFIT #3: PHYSICAL HEALTH AND FITNESS. The health benefits of kids being more physically active are pretty obvious.

Childhood obesity rates are astonishingly high right now. Just 20 minutes a day spent running, climbing and playing outside can burn those extra calories and help curb this national epidemic. Physical activity can also improve sleep quality for kids.
