CELL C SHARKS VS DHL WESTERN PROVINCE
MESSAGE TO OUR FANS
It has been a challenging time and we have missed every minute of rugby. The team has missed running out at Jonsson Kings Park to your cheers and playing their hearts out in the black and white jersey. We have missed the smell of the boerewors rolls being braaied on the outer fields, the laughter and enjoyment of children having fun in the Small Zone, the music and entertainment, but most of all seeing our community connect and embrace each other through the sport we love.
Thank you for standing by us, shouting for us and always keeping the black and white in your hearts and minds. We look forward to going out there and playing for you. Our fans are and will always be our heartbeat. #OurSharksForever DR. EDUARD COETZEE THE SHARKS CEO
We find ourselves in a unique situation, where being apart now is important to be together later. And as we return to the playing field, we will play keeping all our fans in spirit and knowing we have your loyal support and passion from far and wide. CELL C SHARKS VS DHL WESTERN PROVINCE

MATCH PREVIEW
MOVING FORWARD AS A TEAM WORDS: ALBERT HEENOP
For a performance-driven outfit like the Cell C Sharks, it’s all about moving forward and into the Carling Currie Cup playoffs, as a team. And, a relatively youthful but passionate team at that... Once more led in exemplary fashion by Phepsi Buthelezi, who only turned 22 three months ago, the Cell C Sharks last Saturday delivered one of their most clinical performances of the season in Johannesburg to book a home semi-final berth in this year’s Carling Currie Cup. Their 56-14 annihilation of the Lions was every bit as comprehensive as it was impressive, and the fact that the average age of the Cell C Sharks’ 23-man lineup that accomplished the feat is only 25 makes it even more remarkable. They did experience a somewhat shaky start at scrum time, but then again, as head coach Sean Everitt observed, the Lions do boast a formidable frontrow unit, perhaps the strongest in the domestic showpiece, and for the Cell C Sharks to show the composure that they did to gradually attain parity in the set 8
CELL C SHARKS VS DHL WESTERN PROVINCE
piece was yet another indication of their class. The defensive character of this Cell C Sharks’ side was most impressive, and something that Everitt is particularly chuffed about. “We’ve been working hard on our defence and John McFarland must take a lot of credit for that,” he said. “We’ve been found wanting at times but are starting to get confidence out of what we’re doing on the training track and what John has brought in as the new defensive coach. “We managed to get a lot of reward, a lot of turnovers at the breakdown, so I’m very pleased with how we defended, especially at maul time.” The big win has entrenched the Cell C Sharks (40) in second place on the current Carling Currie Cup table, with the possibility, depending on how the earlier clash today
between the Bulls and Cheetahs in Pretoria pan out, of even beating the Bulls (44) to pole position in this year’s competition. Griquas (33) and Pumas (32) respectively fill the third and fourth spots at the moment, but neither can overhaul the Cell C Sharks anymore. The Durban-based outfit pride themselves on being a performance-driven team, and, despite one or two glitches along the way, Everitt’s charges have indeed produced regular performances of a very high calibre throughout the season. Buthelezi and the troops launched their Carling Currie Cup challenge in convincing fashion a couple of months ago in Kimberley, seeing off Griquas 30-16. Thereafter, they headed down to Cape Town for the earlier match against Western Province, again outscored the opposition by four tries to two and led 21-19 at the half, but their discipline let them down, with WP snatching a heart-stopping 32-31 win through a late penalty. Three home fixtures of the Cell C Sharks in a row were aborted within the space of nine days, due to the unrest that swept through KwaZulu-Natal in July, as well as the fact that they had to face the British & Irish Lions a second consecutive time.
THE DEFENSIVE CHARACTER OF THIS CELL C SHARKS’ SIDE WAS MOST IMPRESSIVE, AND SOMETHING THAT EVERITT IS PARTICULARLY CHUFFED ABOUT.
Earlier this month, the Cell C Sharks suffered a dreadful 37-27 loss to Griquas at home, but the following week bounced back to scoop a telling 35-28 win against the defending champions, the Bulls. And, although the away game against the Pumas in Nelspruit had to be abandoned, too, due to Covid-19 protocols, the Cell C Sharks haven’t look back since, consolidated a toptwo standing on the log table and are fizzing to roar into next weekend’s semi-finals.

FLEET-FOOTED FLAIR ‘N FINESSE Thaakir Abrahams, the new Cell C Sharks’ sensation on the wing, has already been compared to Bok ace Cheslin Kolbe. The comparison is justified, as both these relatively small operators are making huge inroads on the big stage... WORDS: ALBERT HEENOP 10 CELL C SHARKS VS DHL WESTERN PROVINCE
Abrahams continued his highly impressive Kolbe impersonation last Saturday in Johannesburg by running in a hat-trick in the decisive and comprehensive 56-14 annihilation of the Lions. This performance prompted Cell C Sharks’ coach Sean Everitt to again sing the praises of his protégé. “I’ve coached Thaakir for quite a few years, and he has so much potential,” Everitt observed. “In this Carling Currie Cup, he has grown and grown with the increased game time that he received. “It’s difficult for players who aren’t big in stature to make their mark at the top level. Thaakir has certainly done that.” Abrahams himself is modesty personified, though. “All credited goes to the team,” he insists. “It wasn’t only me, basically I just had to put the ball down behind the goal-line.” Abrahams, of course, might be a wee bit too modest in this assessment, but does acknowledge that he was basically born with a rugby ball in his hands - in Paarl, back on January 10, 2000. “I come from quite a big rugby family and grew up watching my cousins play for the Vineyards Rugby Club at Dal Josaphat Stadium in Paarl,” he recalls. “I also started playing from a very young age at Laerskool Drakenstein.” Interestingly enough young Abrahams initially struggled with the game, but that was because of a visual impairment. “It was only after I’d received contact lenses in Grade 3, that I was able to start playing properly,” he says. 11
I COME FROM QUITE A BIG RUGBY FAMILY AND GREW UP WATCHING MY COUSINS PLAY FOR THE VINEYARDS RUGBY CLUB AT DAL JOSAPHAT STADIUM IN PAARL
He also kept a close eye on Springboks Bryan Habana and JP Pietersen, his childhood heroes, as “they were the guys who caught the high balls, had pace and scored tries...” With his new-found vision, Abrahams’ rugby excelled. He represented Western Province at the U13 Craven Week and attended the famous Paarl Boys High School. “For me, coming from a small primary school like Drakenstein, which had barely 200 pupils, Boys High required quite an adjustment,” he recalls. “I enjoyed my time there and the rugby, of course, was very good. We had top coaches, like Sean Erasmus (current Lions assistantcoach), who was my First XV coach in Grade 11 and 12. “He saw the potential in me and really believed in me.” Abrahams realised his potential by captaining the Boys High First XV and representing WP at the U18 Academy and Craven Weeks respectively. In 2019, he also gained selection for the Junior Springboks, recording a brace of tries in the bronze medal victory over hosts Argentina during the World Rugby U20 Championship. The Cell C Sharks also identified the profound potential in Abrahams and made him an offer. “I always loved the way the Cell C Sharks played,” he admits. ‘So, when the 12 CELL C SHARKS VS DHL WESTERN PROVINCE
opportunity came, I was quite excited. “I was also somewhat nervous, though, as I’d never lived away from home, away from the Paarl region. My dad, however, told me to just go and see how things work out. “And, it has worked out really well.” Abrahams celebrated his debut with a 19-16 victory over the Lions during the inaugural round of Super Rugby Unlocked last year, and swiftly established himself as a Cell C Sharks’ star in this year’s Carling Currie Cup. Judged by the way he slit the WP defence apart with some dazzling footwork during the earlier encounter in Cape Town, it was difficult not to compare the 21-year-old whizkid to pint-sized Springbok ace Cheslin Kolbe. Even Cell C Sharks’ coach Sean Everitt alluded to the similarity. “Cheslin is one of the best attacking players and finishers in world rugby, so for me to be compared to him is just an honour,” Abrahams says. “Obviously, I’m not quite at his level yet, but the work that he does is just phenomenal and an inspiration for me to work really hard at my game too. “What Cheslin has done is to open doors for players like me, who aren’t as big in physique, to also excel. It’s more about evasive skills and power than size. “And, if you put in the hard work, you will achieve - regardless of how big or small you are.”

FACTS, STATS & TRIVIA
REVERED RIVALRY ‘N RECORDS AS SOUTH AFRICA’S TWO CHIEF COASTAL PROVINCIAL UNIONS, THE CELL C SHARKS AND WESTERN PROVINCE HAVE ENJOYED HEALTHY RIVALRY OVER THE PAST 130 YEARS, AND, BETWEEN THEM, PRODUCED SOME NOTABLE CARLING CURRIE CUP RECORDS...
DID YOU KNOW THAT... Breyton Paulse, the co-presenter of Toks & Tjops on KykNET and former Springbok winger of WP, scored the second most tries (70) in Currie Cup history, while Sharks’ legends Stefan Terblanche and André Joubert touched down 60 and 58 times respectively. The record for the most tries is held by John Daniels of Boland and the Golden Lions (77). Former WP and Cheetahs sharpshooter Willem de Waal racked up the second most Currie Cup points (1433) of all time, behind Naas Botha’s 1699, while De Wet Ras and André Joubert, who both represented Natal / The Sharks and Free State, totalled 1210 and 1165 points respectively. Sharks stalwart flanker Jacques Botes boasts the most Currie Cup caps (156). Of those games, 129 were for The Sharks and 27 for the Pumas. Other Sharks in the top 10 of this category include Vleis Visagie (141: Free State, Sharks, Pumas), Ollie le Roux (132: Free State, Sharks) and Stefan Terblanche (128: Boland, Sharks)

MAJOR MATCHUP
CRONJE V SWIEL There’s a saying that nothing can substitute experience. That is certainly true in the case of Cell C Sharks’ pivot, 32-year-old Lionel Cronje. No stranger to The Shark Tank - he spent 2014 and 2015 here - Cronje also had stints with WP, the Cheetahs, Bulls and Lions over the past decade, while, over the last five years, he spent industrious seasons with Verblitz in Japan. Since rejoining the Cell C Sharks, Cronje has added composure to the back division, especially when the chips were down, and was instrumental in coordinating the important wins against the Bulls and Lions recently. Another familiar face in Durban, Tim Swiel left for the UK, following a brief spell with the Cell C Sharks in 2014, where he was based first at Harlequins and more recently the Newcastle Falcons. Swiel returned to his native Cape last year, and has reinstated himself in the WP flyhalf berth with some matchwinning sharpshooting performances of late. He is one of the top points-scorers in this year’s Carling Currie Cup, nailing, amongst others, eight from eight in both Province’s earlier 32-31 win against the Cell C Sharks and the heart-stopping 40-39 victory over the Cheetahs recently.
