Today sees the two top SA sides in the URC clash for a result that could prove pretty decisive in the long run. The importance of the match is certain to properly fire up the traditional arch-rivalry that already exists between the Cell C Sharks and Stormers. As things stand currently, the Cell C Sharks (14) are in 10th position on the United Rugby Championship log, 19 championship points adrift of the topof-the-table Edinburgh (33), but with two games in hand. And, with the Durban-based franchise having 10 matches left, there still is a lot of rugby to be played in this inaugural edition of the URC. This afternoon, the Cell C Sharks are hosting arch-enemies, the Stormers, who are a couple of championship points adrift of their hosts in 12th spot. The other two South African outfits, the Lions and Bulls, are lying 13th and 15th respectively. The Stormers arrive in The Shark Tank coming off an inspirational 30-26 bonus10 CELL C SHARKS VS DHL STORMERS
point win over the Bulls at Loftus Versfeld over the weekend. Having built up a commanding 18-0 lead during the first half, the Stormers however allowed the Bulls back into the game during the second spell and eventually it was left to substitute scrumhalf Paul de Wet to score the match-winning try for the Capetonians five minutes from time. No doubt the Stormers would have gained heaps of confidence from this feat and will be fired up for battle with the Cell C Sharks. The latter have now recorded two important victories on the trot, having seen off the Bulls 30-16 in December and the Lions, away from home, this past Saturday. With the majority of their Springboks back in harness, the Cell C Sharks maximised the opportunities that came their way in Johannesburg to achieve an invaluable 47-
37 away win over the never-say-die Lions. The game graphically illustrated the importance of having one’s Boks at your disposal, a privilege that was denied to the Cell C Sharks during the early stages of the URC last year. Apart from World Cup-winning ace Makazole’s Mapimpi’s critical hat-trick of tries, Aphelele Fassi also crossed the whitewash and, with his lethal attacks from the back, showed that he should be afforded more opportunity in the green and gold no 15 jumper too. Skipper Lukhanyo Am was, as always, pure class at outside centre, played a shrewd role in a couple of Cell C Sharks’ tries and weighed in with a try himself at the death to seal victory for the Durbanites. The Lions nevertheless deserve credit for the way in which they took the game to the Cell C Sharks and refused to take defeat lying down. As a matter of fact, they recorded five of the 11 tries that this entertaining encounter produced, and even surged to an early 12-3 lead through two quick tries during the opening salvoes.
NO DOUBT THE STORMERS WOULD HAVE GAINED HEAPS OF CONFIDENCE FROM THIS FEAT AND WILL BE FIRED UP FOR BATTLE WITH THE CELL C SHARKS. The Cell C Sharks, though, displayed the class and composure of champions to start stringing together some deadly phases and grab the contest by the scruff of the neck. Sean Everitt’s charges will be keen to build on this marvellous momentum tonight against the Stormers. Being a home game for the Cell C Sharks, a win is hardly negotiable. Even more so considering that the boys will be heading down to Cape Town next weekend to take on the Stormers on their home patch.
That game is the first of three consecutive away assignments for the Cell C Sharks, as they will also be tackling the Bulls in Pretoria on February 12 and last year’s Pro14 Rainbow Cup champions, Benetton, in Treviso, Italy, on February 26. The next occasion on which the Cell C Sharks will be in action here in The Tank will be, a month later, on March 26, when they host the current log-leaders, Edinburgh. are lying in 14th and 15th position on the table respectively. DETERMINATION AND DEDICATION, THE MAPIMPI STORY World Cup-winning winger Makazole Mapimpi was dubbed the best eleven in world rugby following his decisive hat-trick in the URC match against the Lions last weekend. And, who could argue with that assertion. However, it is the superstar’s hard work, as well as a never-give-up attitude, that continuously pays off for him… WORDS: ALBERT HEENOP 12 CELL C SHARKS VS DHL STORMERS
Having scored a staggering 20 tries in only 25 tests for South Africa, Makazole Mapimpi has pipped the legendary Danie Gerber as the Springbok player with the best try-scoring ratio (80%) of all time. Mapimpi, however, is not only a try-scoring machine in green and gold, as his predatory sorties for the Cell C Sharks prove. The 31-year-old flyer was, as usual, in sublime form and named Man of the Match in the Cell C Sharks’ heart-stopping 47-37 victory in Johannesburg last Saturday, and no doubt a source of great pride for coach Sean Everitt. “Mapimpi certainly is the best left wing in world rugby,” Everitt enthused. “People talk about Cheslin Kolbe, and rightly so, but every time Mapimpi takes to the field he gets over the chalk, domestically or internationally. “Our Springboks are great people and we are blessed to have them at the Cell C Sharks.” On a previous occasion, Everitt also observed that Mapimpi has “never played a bad game of rugby in his life. “His work-rate is amazing and, yet, people always ask why he is so lucky to get the ball in his hands to score tries,” Everitt said. “He works hard.” Someone else who can vouch for that, is former Springbok and Sharks lock Johan Ackermann, who was Mapimpi’s coach during his eight-month stint last year with the Red Hurricanes in Japan. “Mapimpi simply is a great human being and an absolute pleasure to coach,” Ackermann said, all the way from Osaka. “His work ethic is phenomenal. “Everybody knows what a great player he is and how well he performed for the Red Hurricanes, yet he is always open to advice. “HIS WORK-RATE IS AMAZING AND, YET, PEOPLE ALWAYS ASK WHY HE IS SO LUCKY TO GET THE BALL IN HIS HANDS TO SCORE TRIES,” EVERITT SAID. “HE WORKS HARD.”
“The thing that I appreciate the most about Mapimpi is his attitude towards training, even when he is not picked to play. He trains hard and with intensity, and this spurred on the Japanese players big time. “There was one occasion when I didn’t pick him, and he and the other players, who were not in the matchday 23, still had to participate in our tough Friday session, which involved contact. “Yet, there he was, a famous Springbok international and World Cup winner, never moaning but leading by example. Again, that attitude rubbed off on the others. “After all, if Mapimpi, a superstar, could train like that, even if he’s not part of the 23, so can the rest.

“He was super professional, but, more importantly, a great team guy. And, ever so humble. “He was an inspiration, on and off the pitch.” Mapimpi himself is indeed humility personified. After all, they say that actions speak louder than words, and, even after a feat like his sensational hat-trick over the weekend, Makazole Mapimpi’s regular response would merely be something along the lines of: “I was very happy with the result, for the team. The team always comes first…” What a player, what a man.

DU TOIT V KITSHOFF When the scrum engages tonight, it will pit Paarl Boys High old boy Thomas du Toit against his Paul Roos Gimnasium counterpart, Steven Kitshoff - and it promises to be a right royal front-row duel! Du Toit, aka ‘The Tank’, has established himself as the cornerstone of the Cell C Sharks’ pack over the past seven seasons, and should probably have earned more than just 13 test caps for South Africa to date. However, the 26-year-old powerhouse still has plenty left in the ‘tank’, pardon the pun, and he continues to serve as a massive inspiration for the boys in black and white - with his com-bo of forceful scrummaging, dynamic drives and, indeed, leadership. Kitshoff (29), who is also captaining the Stormers tonight, already boasts 59 tests in the green and gold. However, amazingly, 44 of those tests for South Africa were off the bench - including the 32-12 defeat of England in the final of RWC 2019. Kitshoff is undoubtedly a seasoned campaigner and also had a two-year stint with French Top 14-outfit Bordeaux from 2015 to 2017.

THE STATS SO FAR… IT’S STILL EARLY DAYS, WITH HEAPS OF RUGBY STILL TO BE PLAYED IN THIS, THE INAUGURAL SEASON OF THE UNITED RUGBY CHAMPIONSHIP, YET THE STATIS-TICS, BOTH AS FAR AS TEAMS AND INDIVIDUAL PLAYERS ARE CONCERNED, AL-READY MAKE FOR INTERESTING READING… Although Edinburgh, from Scotland, are top of the table after their first eight games in this year’s URC, Irish team Leinster have emerged as the best attack-ing outfit thus far: * Leinster are first in terms of both points (217) and tries (31) scored, and sec-ond as far as metres gained (3552) and defenders beaten (172) are con-cerned. * The Cell C Sharks have scored 162 points and 17 tries, gained 1932 metres and beaten 63 defenders after their first six games in the URC. * Defensively speaking, Ulster are first with 92% tackle success, with the Cell C Sharks in third place with 90%. * At scrum time, Munster are tops with 100% scrums won, followed by the Cell C Sharks with 97%. As for individual performances, Connacht boast both the top points- and try-scorers in the URC so far: * The top points-scorer is Connacht’s Jack Carty with a tally of 72, while Cell C Sharks’ pivot Boeta Chamerlain has cored 51 points to date. * Mack Hansen of Connacht is not only the top try-scorer so far with six to his credit, but has also made the most clean breaks (11), beaten the most de-fenders (38) and gained the most metres (556). *In respect of defenders, Jack Morgan (Ospreys) has made the most tackles (128) and won the most turnovers (13), while Cardiff’s Will Boyde has enjoyed the best tackle success with 100%.
