“We have shown that parts of our game are really improving, and, being a process-driven team, we are approaching the remainder of our campaign with the mindset of getting the wins, getting the championship points and climbing up the ladder.”

MATCH PREVIEW

Of the Hollywoodbets Sharks’ remaining nine fixtures in the second half of the competition, no fewer than six are at home, which is just another indication of how tough the first half of the competition had been, having had to play six away from home.

BRACE YOURSELF FOR A BLOCKBUSTER

As such, John Plumtree’s charges are simply fizzing to turn their URC season around, and today’s massive encounter with the Stormers needs to be the turning point.

WORDS: ALBERT HEENOP

The Hollywoodbets Sharks, following an inspirational run in the EPCR Challenge Cup, today resume their Vodacom URC campaign with this mouthwatering clash with the Stormers. Despite a combination of injuries and Bok protocols still hampering team selection, the men in black are primed to deliver a legitimate ‘Sharks Fest’!... This much-hyped return encounter between South Africa’s two fierce coastal counterparts at Hollywoodbets Kings Park marks the second half of the current Vodacom United Rugby Championship. The previous duel between the Hollywoodbets Sharks and Stormers, in Cape Town at the end of last year, was a typically titanic tussle that went right down to the wire. In the end, the contest was settled with a 60th-minute penalty goal, which, despite the Durban-based outfit having outscored their hosts by two tries to one, resulted in a heart-stopping 15-16 defeat. This has pretty much been the trend for the Hollywoodbets Sharks in their current URC campaign, with a series of losses by the narrowest of one- or two-point margins contributing to their precarious standing at the halfway mark of the competition. 10 HOLLYWOODBETS SHARKS VS DHL STORMERS

There is indeed a steep mountain to climb over the next three months, however all is not lost. Two consecutive and highly impressive wins in the EPCR Challenge Cup, against Oyonnax (38-7) and Dragons (29-9), away from home in Wales, have not only boosted the confidence of The Hollywoodbets Sharks and placed them in a perfect position to challenge for the trophy, but it has also created invaluable momentum that Lukhanyo Am and co will be fizzing to carry into the URC arena today. Of course, winning the Challenge Cup will also ensure automatic entry for the Hollywoodbets Sharks into next season’s Investec Champions Cup. “Our current standing in the URC is not ideal,” Hollywoodbets Sharks skipper, Lukhany Am, acknowledged earlier this week. “The intent hasn’t changed, though; we will take to the park to deliver our level best.

“THE INTENT HASN’T CHANGED, THOUGH; WE WILL TAKE TO THE PARK TO DELIVER OUR LEVEL BEST..." Unfortunately, the coach has still not been able to field his strongest possible combination, due to injuries to certain key players, like Springbok lock Eben Etzebeth (knee operation), while a few other Boks need to be rested according to SA Rugby regulations. “We do boast some pretty formidable forwards, yet I haven’t been able yet to put that complete pack on the park,” Plumtree observed. “We have injuries to key players and that has been particularly frustrating for us as a coaching team. We’ve probably had six operations to tight-five players over the past three to four months. “We haven’t been able to properly utilise the depth, upfront, that we have at our disposal. “It’s February already, and Bongi (Mbonambi) is only now playing his first game, which we are delighted about as he is our No 1 hooker. But, now, we have lost Eben with a knee op, which will sideline him for a few weeks. “In addition, there are Boks that have to be rested, and that doesn’t help our cause either. We understand the importance of that, though, as it is a long season of having to play both northern and southern hemisphere rugby, which is crazy.” Following today’s crunch encounter with the Stormers, the Hollywoodbets Sharks have a week off before taking on the Lions away from home on March 2. 11

Dubbed the Springboks’ ‘Iron Man’ by the French media, due to his heroics at Rugby World Cup 2023, Bongi Mbonambi is delighted to be returning to action, and raring to against archenemies, the Stormers. “The past few months have been frustrating, yet it has been a rewarding journey getting back to full fitness and becoming game-ready,” Mbonambi says. “I have to give credit to the hard-working medical staff of the Hollywoodbets Sharks, who really pushed me to get better every day. Most of all, they make it so enjoyable to work hard, to get fit and ready to play my part in the team. “As for the Stormers today, local derby games are always tough, but that is why we enjoy what we do. It is going be a classic coastal clash in The Shark Tank.” Having had to watch from the sidelines since October last year, has given Mbonambi an objective view of the Hollywoodbets Sharks’ difficult campaign thus far in the Vodacom United Rugby Championship. “It has certainly been a tough season for the boys so far, with a lot of players being injured, some Boks being rested and new players coming in.

‘IRON MAN’ RETURNS

Taking on the Stormers in a crunch derby today, the Hollywoodbets Sharks have been bolstered by the timely return of their No 1 hooker and Bok icon, Bongi Mbonambi, following a four-month lay-off due to a serious knee injury sustained in last year’s World Cup final…

WORDS: ALBERT 12 HOLLYWOODBETS SHARKS VS DHL STORMERS

“However, we are highly determined to improve during the second half of the URC.” Following South Africa’s back-to-back triumphs at the RWC campaigns of 2019 and 2023, Mbonambi forms part of an elite group of Boks boasting two winners’ medals at the global showpiece. “Both World Cup campaigns were simply amazing to be part of and it was even better to win both!” he enthuses. “It is just an absolute honour and privilege to be able to represent South Africa and its people on such a world stage, and even better doing it in the Springbok jersey, which means and has done so much for South Africa’s past and its future.” HOLLYWOODBETS SHARKS VS DHL STORMERS

13

Mbonambi was a star performer for South Africa throughout last year’s campaign, scooping the Player of the Match award for his heroic endeavours in the pulsating 2928 quarter-final win against hosts, France. For the veteran 33-year-old hooker, who already has 68 test caps under his belt, that was not his highlight of the tournament, though. “For me, personally, being given the opportunity to captain South Africa against Romania during the pool stages was simply unforgettable,” he says. “It was such a massive honour and a memory that I will cherish forever. Sadly, Mbonambi’s participation in the heart-stopping final victory over the All Blacks, again by the narrowest of one-point margins, was rudely curtailed less than

five minutes into the contest at the Stade de France. That was when he sustained the serious knee injury, which resulted from an illegal clear-out by New Zealand blindside flanker Shannon Frizell, who was subsequently sin-binned by referee Wayne Barnes. “It was not only a hugely disappointing moment for me but also the game of rugby, having someone, who plays a professional game and claims to be professional, take a cheap shot at me like that. It was unprofessional behaviour and technique.” Mbonambi was nevertheless still able to thoroughly indulge in the epic celebrations that followed the Bok triumph. As he says: “It was never about us but about South Africa, and the hope that the country is craving for…” @TheSharks

FACTS, STATS & TRIVIA

MAJOR MATCHUP

FASSI VS GELANT The battle of the fullbacks should prove an intriguing one in today’s massive coastal derby. Aphelele Fassi has had to endure a series of injury woes over the past couple of years, which prevented the popular “Weekend Special” of the Hollywoodbets Sharks from attaining the same heady heights that led to his initial Springbok call-up in 2021. He played in three tests, scoring two tries.

A RIVETING RIVALRY oday marks the 36th occasion on which the Hollywoodbets Sharks and Stormers (previously Western Province) have clashed on the regional (Super Rugby, Rainbow Cup and URC) stage. At the moment the rivalry is extremely evenly poised… Did you know: *

The very first Super 12 match between the Natal Sharks, as they were known then, and Western Province took place on March 2, 1996, in Durban, with the home side securing a 28-22 victory with which to open their Super Rugby account.

*

The most recent encounter, in the Vodacom United Rugby Championship, was on December 30, 2023, with the Stormers sneaking a pulsating 16-15 win in Cape Town.

*

The Hollywoodbets Sharks have won 18 of the previous 35 encounters, giving them a 51.43 winning percentage against the Stormers.

Warrick Gelant, aka the “Bogeyman”, returned to the Cape last year following a brief stint with Racing 92 in France.

*

Since 1996, the Stormers have scored 712 points to the Hollywoodbets Sharks 706, resulting in a narrow points difference of only six.

Boasting 11 test caps (2017-22), Gelant was, alongside Manie Libbok and Damian Willemse, one of the stars when the Stormers clinched the inaugural Vodacom URC title in 2022.

*

Both these sides played their very last Super Rugby match, before the competition had to be aborted due to COVID-19, against each other on March 14, 2020, in Durban. The Hollywoodbets Sharks were in ferocious form at that stage of the tournament and managed to comprehensively see off the Stormers 24-14.

*

In the subsequent Rainbow Cup, the Hollywoodbets Sharks won one and lost one against the Stormers.

*

Since the introduction of the URC, in 2022, one match was drawn, while the Stormers won the other four encounters. Apart from the Stormers’ 46-19 win last year, the other three matches have all been relatively close-fought encounters.

A lethal attacker from the back - he has recorded almost 20 tries in just over 50 outings for the Hollywoodbets Sharks - the 26-year-old has regained full fitness, worked hard at improving overall aspects of his game, including consistency and defence, and is already making his mark in the current edition of the Vodacom URC. Fassi is currently top of the metres-gained rankings with 675 m, and second in terms of carries (103).

A versatile outside back, who is equally adept at playing winger or outside centre, the 28-year-old has steadily returned to top form, sharing the Stormers’ fullback duties with Rugby World Cup hero, Damian Willemse. Gelant is currently among the top five URC players with 483 metres gained, and poses a real and present threat from the back.
