MESSAGE TO OUR FANS
It has been a challenging time and we have missed every minute of rugby. The team has missed running out at Jonsson Kings Park to your cheers and playing their hearts out in the black and white jersey. We have missed the smell of the boerewors rolls being braaied on the outer fields, the laughter and enjoyment of children having fun in the Small Zone, the music and entertainment, but most of all seeing our community connect and embrace each other through the sport we love.
Thank you for standing by us, shouting for us and always keeping the black and white in your hearts and minds. We look forward to going out there and playing for you. Our fans are and will always be our heartbeat. #OurSharksForever DR. EDUARD COETZEE THE SHARKS CEO
We find ourselves in a unique situation, where being apart now is important to be together later. And as we return to the playing field, we will play keeping all our fans in spirit and knowing we have your loyal support and passion from far and wide. CELL C SHARKS VS TAFEL LAGER GRIQUAS

CRUNCH TIME COMING UP WORDS: ALBERT HEENOP
With the current and heavily interrupted edition of the Carling Currie Cup having reached the halfway stage, the Cell C Sharks are clinging to the top of the table and will be looking to consolidate their standing over the next month... The Cell C Sharks are in action at Jonsson Kings Park for the first time in the 132nd edition of the prestigious domestic championship. Phepsi Buthelezi and co kicked off their current Carling Currie Cup challenge in emphatic fashion on June 19 in Kimberley - a tough venue that is historically known for tripping up hotshot visitors to the diamond capital. The Cell C Sharks outscored Griquas by four tries to two for a comprehensive 30-16 win, with which to open their 2021 Carling Currie Cup account. At the end of June, the Durban-based outfit travelled down to Cape Town, again outscored the opposition by four tries to two and led 21-19 at the half, but their discipline let them down, with Western Province snatching a heart-stopping 3231 win through a penalty at the death. Thereafter, three home fixtures of the Cell 8
CELL C SHARKS VS TAFEL LAGER GRIQUAS
C Sharks in a row were aborted within the space of nine days, due to the unrest that swept through KwaZulu-Natal this month, as well as the fact that the Cell C Sharks had to face the British & Irish Lions a second consecutive time on July 10 after Covid-19 had prevented the Bulls from playing against the tourists. Last Saturday, Sean Everitt’s charges resumed their Carling Currie Cup campaign with an entertaining 47-30 win over the Cheetahs in Bloemfontein, outscoring their hosts by five tries to four. Currently the Cell C Sharks are top of the Carling Currie Cup table, one point clear of the defending champions, the Bulls, and they will be looking to consolidate their pole position over the next four weeks. Today’s return match against Griquas presents an ideal opportunity to secure another full haul of championship points, although the visitors from the Northern
Cape should not be underestimated. The Peacock Blues have thus far won three and drew one of their first six games in the competition, boasting impressive victories over the likes of the Cheetahs, Western Province and Lions. Coached by the enthusiastic former Sharks duo of Scott Mathie and Albert van den Berg, Griquas deservedly occupy the third spot on this year’s congested Carling Currie Cup table. This coming Friday, the Vodacom Blue Bulls arrive in Durban for what is again shaping up as an early power struggle in this year’s Carling Currie Cup race.
LAST SATURDAY, SEAN EVERITT’S CHARGES RESUMED THEIR CARLING CURRIE CUP CAMPAIGN WITH AN ENTERTAINING 47-30 WIN OVER THE CHEETAHS IN BLOEMFONTEIN, OUTSCORING THEIR HOSTS BY FIVE TRIES TO FOUR. Five days later, the Cell C Sharks are travelling to Nelspruit for a tough away assignment against the Pumas, before hosting the Cheetahs merely another four days later. Thereafter, the boys have one more away game, against the Lions on August 21, and a last home fixture against Western Province a week later, prior to the playoffs in early September. It goes without saying, therefore, that every home fixture from this point onwards will be vital in terms of cashing in on championship points, and reason enough this afternoon for the boys in black and white to stamp their authority on proceedings from the start. LIKE FINE WINE Anthony Volmink arrived at The Shark Tank at an age when most professional players would already be contemplating retirement. He soon proved his worth for the Cell C Sharks, though, and has established himself as a key weapon in the back three...
WORDS: ALBERT HEENOP 10 CELL C SHARKS VS TAFEL LAGER GRIQUAS
The 31-year-old outside back seems to be ageing just like the fine wine from the Bredasdorp region in the Western Cape where he hails from. His brace of tries against the British & Irish Lions three weeks ago is a case in point. Even though the magnificent Cell C Sharks challenge - they held the Lions to a 26-26 draw at the break - evaporated in the second half, after they had been reduced to 14 men, it’s an outing that Volmink won’t forget in a hurry. “I came to the Cell C Sharks with a lot of expectations,” he says. “It’s a proud franchise that have produced numerous Springboks down the years. I realised that I had to make the most of the opportunity. “And, yes, the opportunity to measure one against the British & Irish Lions doesn’t come along too often, as they only tour here every 12 years. “So, I just told myself to go out there, stick to the basics and enjoy the moment. That’s exactly what I did, and I reaped the rewards.” Anthony Alfred Volmink was born in Bredasdorp on February 10, 1990, on the eve of Nelson Mandela’s release from prison on February 11, 1990. “It is very special,” Volmink observes, “as that was the day when freedom arrived for South Africa.” As a kid growing up in the Southern Overberg region of the Western Cape, Volmink enjoyed the freedom to run around to his heart’s content, participating in a variety of sports, and relentlessly competing with his elder brother. “Simon’s six years older than me and, CELL C SHARKS VS TAFEL LAGER GRIQUAS

although I looked up at him, I always tried to beat him at whatever sport we played in the backyard, whether it be one-on-one rugby, soccer or cricket,” he recalls. “That’s where my competitive spirit comes from. “I always wanted to be as effective as can be in whatever I did. I simply viewed everything as competition. “Initially, I was more into athletics, and specifically sprints, but after school I chose to focus on rugby, as there was no real money in athletics at the time.” Having initially represented the Boland Cavaliers on a couple of occasions, Volmink’s big break came when he starred for UWC in the 2012 Varsity Shield and was subsequently signed by the Golden Lions. His Super Rugby debut for the Lions was against the Cell C Sharks nine years ago, and in 2013 he ran in a record nine tries as the Golden Lions romped to a 161-3 12 CELL C SHARKS VS TAFEL LAGER GRIQUAS
annihilation of Limpopo Blue Bulls in the Vodacom Cup - which Volmink still regards as the highlight of his career. And, now he is adding invaluable depth and experience to the Cell C Sharks’ outside back division, with Makazole Mapimpi and co away on Springbok duty. “I’ve settled in nicely,” he says. “If I’d known how great it is here at the Cell C Sharks, I would have tried to get here long ago. “It’s a fantastic environment, despite all the uncertainty brought about by both Covid-19 and the recent unrest, and we’re such a close-knit family here at the Cell C Sharks. “It really is special.”

FACTS, STATS & TRIVIA
B&I LIONS: 130 YEARS OF RIVALRY THE CELL C SHARKS’ BACK-TO-BACK CONFRONTATIONS WITH THE TOURING BRITISH & IRISH LIONS EARLIER THIS MONTH MARKED THE 14TH AND 15TH ENCOUNTERS BETWEEN THESE TWO TEAMS, SINCE 1891, AND THE FIRST EVER TO BE PLAYED OUTSIDE OF KZN...
Played in Johannesburg and Pretoria respectively, due to Covid-19 restrictions, the highly skilled and streetwise British & Irish Lions, who are entering later today’s decisive test against South Africa with a 1-0 lead in the series, handsomely dismantled a rather youthful and inexperienced Cell C Sharks outfit on both occasions. The final scorelines of 7-54 and 31-71, though, are no indication of how competitive Phepsi Buthelezi and his team were at stages of both contests, and especially the second at Loftus Versfeld. As a matter of fact, the Durban-based side, displaying far more composure and precision the second time around, managed to level the halftime score 26-26 in Pretoria. Unfortunately, an untimely red card early in the second stanza turned it into a one-way contest. Significantly, it was not the first time that the Cell C Sharks played the British & Irish Lions twice during one tour... DID YOU KNOW: The first match between Natal and the British Isles took place at the Carbineers Ground in Pietermaritzburg in 1891. Britain won 25-0. The 1910 match between Natal and the British Isles was staged at Albert Park on the Victoria Embankment in Durban. Natal lost 0-22. In 1910 Natal played twice against the British Isles, losing 16-18 in Maritzburg and 13-19 at Lords in Durban. The closest Natal came to beating the British Isles was in 1924, when the contest at the Oval in Maritzburg was drawn 3-3. DHS Old Boys winger Neville Tod scored the equalising try for Natal. The first time that Natal hosted the British & Irish Lions at Kings Park was in 1962, with the Lions winning 13-3. CELL C SHARKS VS TAFEL LAGER GRIQUAS

MAJOR MATCHUP
ABRAHAMS V KEYTER Thaakir Abrahams has swiftly established himself as a Cell C Sharks’ star in this year’s Carling Currie Cup. Judged by the way he slit the WP defence apart with some dazzling footwork last month in Cape Town, it’s difficult not to compare the 21-year-old whiz-kid to pint-sized Springbok ace Cheslin Kolbe. Even Cell C Sharks’ coach Sean Everitt has alluded to the similarity. Having recorded a brace of tries for the Junior Springboks against Argentina during the World Rugby U20 Championship in 2019, Abrahams captained Paarl Boys High and made his Cell C Sharks’ debut during the inaugural round of Super Rugby Unlocked last year. One of the Cell C Sharks’ exciting new signings ahead of the inaugural United Rugby Championship in Sep is 25-year-old Eduan Keyter, who has been simply sublime for Griquas in the Carling Currie Cup competition so far. A product of Affies and Maties, Keyter presently tops the try-scoring table with a tally of six - four of which were scored in Griquas’ thrilling 41-31 win against the Lions recently. Ironically enough, Keyter celebrated his senior provincial debut with Griquas’ 37-13 victory over the Cell C Sharks in 2019. Although Keyter and Abrahams won’t be direct opponents today, the battle of the left wings nevertheless promises to be an intriguing duel.
