IT’S ABOUT ACCURACY AT THE HIGHEST LEVEL WORDS: ALBERT HEENOP
Precision will be priority No 1 for the Cell C Sharks tonight as they aim to get their URC campaign back on track against the Dragons, following last weekend’s defeat at the hands of Edinburgh… What was supposed to be a memorable occasion at Hollywoodbets Kings Park last Saturday, with 50 percent crowd attendance allowed for the first time in two years, ended in disap-pointment for the Cell C Sharks. The wet, rainy weather along the KwaZulu-Natal coast did put a dampener on proceedings, yet in the end the visitors from Edinburgh, Scotland, made a better first of coping with the tough conditions to emerge with a 21-5 win. “The weather was a factor, but we can’t blame that,” Cell C Sharks’ coach Sean Everitt said. “Edinburgh had three opportunities and took advantage of all three (to score tries). “One simply needs to be more accurate and execute well in order to put the opposition un-der pressure. 10 CELL C SHARKS VS DRAGONS RUGBY
“Our game-plan worked well initially, we had patience in our kicking game, but we over-cooked some box kicks giving the opposition chances to counter attack. “We also committed too many individual errors. “Credit to Edinburgh for the way they kept us out defensively, but it is frustrating when we can’t finish opportunities. “One simply has to take points that are on offer, and we weren’t clinical enough to finish off.” This was particularly perplexing, considering that the Cell C Sharks’ dominated the Scots at scrum time all night long, with Springbok loosehead Ox Nche, in particular, giving Edinburgh tighthead LeeRoy Atalifo a torrid time in the front row. Edinburgh, of course, arrived in Durban
boosted by a half a dozen of their Scotland interna-tionals, who had returned from Six Nations duty. This now renders outings against European opposition even more difficult than before. “All these teams are stronger now, so if one’s slightly off on the day, you’re in trouble,” Everitt agreed. “We learnt hard lessons abroad last year, when we were forced to tour with understrength teams. “And, at the end of the day, it’s about accuracy at the highest level.” The Cell C Sharks, who have dropped down to eighth on the current URC table, tonight host the Dragons from Newport, Wales, who have also received an injection of returning talent. “We do have players coming in, but it’s a balancing act,” observed Dragons coach Dean Ryan. “We have to be careful because three or four players don’t solve everything.
CREDIT TO EDINBURGH FOR THE WAY THEY KEPT US OUT DEFENSIVELY, BUT IT IS FRUSTRATING WHEN WE CAN’T FINISH OPPORTUNITIES. “We have lost Ollie Griffiths, who has been huge for us, and we also lost Ben Carter. “We have some quality players joining, whom we expect to make an impact for us, but we will still be under pressure.” Ryan, whose side suffered a 20-55 defeat
at the hands of the Bulls in Pretoria, is particularly wary of the scrummaging power exhibited by the Cell C Sharks against Edinburgh. “I watched the Cell C Sharks’ game and we are under no illusions that the power, which confronted us against Bulls, will be coming again tonight,” Ryan said. “The power that is capable of being delivered by the Cell C Sharks in the scrum and drive is very similar to what we faced against the Bulls.” CELL C SHARKS VS DRAGONS RUGBY

They just need to con-vert those into points, and, as one of the team’s ‘finishers’, the dynamic Kerron van Vuuren is fizzing to help the men in black accomplish just that…

Last weekend’s disappointing loss to Edinburgh has set the Cell C Sharks back somewhat as far as their Vodacom United Rugby Championship aspirations are concerned. It hasn’t, however, dampened the spirit in the camp, says fiery hooker Kerron van Vuuren. “Obviously the loss has hurt us,” van Vuuren admitted. “The performance was not good enough, it wasn’t up to standard. We let the ball slip, but we’ve put in the extra work this week to get back on track. “We’ve done good work over last few weeks, and we’re still pushing to win the South African Shield and finish in the top four. “We’re a performance-driven team, as opposed to results-driven, and therefore were looking for consistent performances. “Some harsh lessons have been learnt, but the guys are still keen and raring to go.” Van Vuuren acknowledges that the URC is a pretty tough competition, and that it has become even harder with the European players returning from Six Nations duty. “It’s very difficult playing against teams with a lot of international players, and the rugby is at a high level,” he says. “The URC style is different to that of Super Rugby, but after six months one can’t say that it’s a learning phase anymore “It is different, though, and very tough, very tight. Just looking at the log, it’s very close and you have to be on your ‘A’ game week in and week out.” Despite the recent defeat, there have been lots of positives for the Cell C Sharks, especially considering that they have won six of their last nine games. “We have made giant strides, with our forwards especially,” Van Vuuren observes.

“We’ve set ourselves up as a dominant scrummaging pack, our set piece is really good, as is our mauling.
“As a matter of fact, we’re considered as finishers, not bench players.
“Prior to last Saturday, we had four wins in a row. We are on the right path, following a tough start on tour last year. “We’re beginning to find ourselves as a team. There are just a few little things that we need to pick up on. “We still need to put together that complete performance. “Finishing opportunities has been a massive talking point. We are creating a lot of opportuni-ties; we just need to convert those into points.” Personally, the 26-year-old hooker hasn’t seen a lot of game time in the URC, operating mostly off the bench as understudy to Springbok hooker Bongi Mbonambi. He is neverthe-less relishing his role as a socalled ‘finisher’… “It has been a new challenge for me, having been used to more game time in the Carling Currie Cup, but I know my role in the team 14 CELL C SHARKS VS DRAGONS RUGBY
“Besides, I’m learning and taking so much inspiration from Boks like Bongi, Siya (Kolisi), and Makazole (Mapimpi). “It’s great to be able to look up to role models like them, to see what they do, their work ethic, their attention to detail and what they do behind the scenes. “Taking notes from a guy like Bongi and incorporating some of those aspects into my own game, motivates me to push myself even harder.” Finally, Van Vuuren and co are stoked to have more spectators back in The Shark Tank. “It’s absolutely amazing,” he enthuses. “The Cell C Sharks have always relied on the support of our fans, and we have such an awe-some fan base. We really did miss them. “So, it’s a big positive for the team, having the fans back and getting all that energy from the crowd. “We simply want to perform for them.”

BUTHELEZI V MORIARTY A very bright future was envisaged for Phepsi Buthelezi from a very young age. And, even at only 22 years of age, he has more than lived up to the promise. Playing with the confidence and maturity of a seasoned international, Buthelezi is relishing competition at the highest level and has already even captained the Cell C Sharks in the URC arena. A classic rags-to-riches tale saw this congenial young man from Hluhluwe, in the heart of Zululand, progress from humble beginnings as a Durban Collegians U15 club player in 2014 to the captaincy of SA U20 four years later. One of three Wales internationals returning to the Dragons fold, Ross Moriarty joined the Dragons from Gloucester in 2018. Having represented England at age-group level, this rampaging loose forward made his Wales debut against Ireland in 2015. Initially missed out on selection for RWC 2015, but was roped in following injury problems in the squad, and is now zeroing in on 50 Welsh caps. His dad, Paul Moriarty, represented Wales at the inaugural Rugby World Cup in 1987, before switching to League.

RENEWING A 49-YEAR-OLD RIVALRY THE CELL C SHARKS ARE HOSTING THE NEWPORT-BASED DRAGONS FOR THE FIRST TIME IN THE URC TONIGHT, YET THE NATAL / SHARKS’ RIVALRY WITH NEWPORT CAN BE TRACED ALL THE WAY BACK TO 1973… Did you know that… * Dragons are one of four professional regional rugby franchises in Wales * The franchise incorporates the South East Wales regions Blaenau Gwent, Caerphilly, Monmouthshire, Newport and Torfaen. * Dragons were established as a professional franchise in 2003, following an agreement between Ebbw Vale RFC and Newport RFC to form a professional franchise. Dragons reached the semi-finals of the European Challenge Cup and the Anglo-Welsh Cup in 2007 and 2011 respectively. * Newport RFC was established in 1874, backed financially by the Phillips Brewing Company and utilising the playing talents of Monmouth School old boys. * Captained by Geoff Evans, Newport toured South Africa in 1973, where they were beaten by Natal 20-7 and by four tries to one. * Newport again visited Durban in 2000, captained against the Natal Sharks on this occasion by former Sharks and Springbok skipper Gary Teichmann. Arranged as a tribute match for Teichmann, the game was basically an expression session of rugby, with the Natal Sharks, boasting legends like André Joubert, James Small, Jeremy Thomson, Dick Muir, Henry Honiball and Kevin Putt, all playing off the bench, eventually running in a 52-25 victory.
