The Hollywoodbets Sharks could not have asked for a better preamble to today’s big SharksFest derby against arch-rivals, the Bulls, in the Vodacom URC, than last weekend’s morale-boosting Investec Champions Cup victory over Saracens…

The Hollywoodbets Sharks not only managed to get JP Pietersen’s tenure as interim head-coach off to a flying start with their inspirational 28-23 win against the visitors from north London last Saturday, but the Durban-based outfit, together with the Stormers, also kept the South African flag flying in the elite European competition.

It was a hard-earned triumph for Pietersen’s charges, as they not only had to weather a committed Saracens onslaught but also had to contend with wet underfoot and blustering aerial conditions.

The home side enjoyed a 21-15 lead at the break, courtesy of tries by Siya Kolisi, Aphelele Fassi and Edwill van der Merwe, all goaled by George Whitehead, and after an hour, Grant Williams crossed between the sticks for the bonus-point try. The Hollywoodbets Sharks, however, had to pull out all the stops to keep Saracens at bay during the dying stages of the contest.

observed afterwards.

“I’ve been talking about ‘fight’ and playing for 80 minutes, and although there were some patches where we didn’t do well, it just showed the character in the team.

One could see how much it meant to them afterwards in the dressing room.

“It also showed how good we can be under pressure. We are looking for hope and belief, and I think we found it in that game.

It wasn’t a perfect performance, yet we can take a lot of confidence from it.”

The Hollywoodbets Sharks will now take that belief on board as they shift their attention back to the Vodacom United Rugby Championship and today’s massive local derby against the Bulls.

The previous time the Hollywoodbets Sharks and Bulls clashed was during the URC semi-final at Loftus Versfeld in June, with the Bulls advancing through to the final with a 25-13 win. Pietersen’s team, though, will rather draw inspiration from the URC encounter four months earlier at the selfsame Loftus, when they blew the home side off the park with a remarkable 29-19 win, despite being reduced to 12 men midway through the game, through three yellow cards.

The local derbies in the URC continue following the week-long break over the festive period, with the Hollywoodbets Sharks heading upcountry to take on the Lions in Johannesburg on 3 January, before another fortnight of back-to-back Champions Cup engagements, against Sale Sharks (10 January, away) and ASM Clermont Auvergne (17 January, home).

Siya Kolisi is one of only two captains in international rugby who can claim that he led his country to backto-back Rugby World Cup titles, in 2019 and 2023.

The other, of course, is All Blacks icon, Richie McCaw, who led New Zealand to successive titles in 2011 and 2015.

At a “youthful” 34 years of age, and judged by his irrepressible form in 2025, both as captain and flanker, chances are that Kolisi can create his own history in 2027 by leading South Africa to an unprecedented hattrick of RWC titles in Australia.

Kolisi also boasts, like former Boks and Sharks skipper, John Smit, a series triumph over the British & Irish Lions (2021), as well as back-to-back Rugby Championship titles (2024-’25).

Apart from these remarkable milestones, however, it is Kolisi’s authenticity as a leader that shines brightest.

His knack for utilising rugby to unite the people of South Africa is next level.

When Kolisi became the ninth Springbok to attain a century of test caps earlier this year, I reached out to McCaw for a comment, and this is what the All Blacks legend had to say: “Siya embodies what is great about rugby.

“It is a game that can unite people no matter where they come from. He has not only performed on the field, but the way he carries himself off the field has endeared him not only to his teammates and the rugby community but also to his country.

‘CHANGING PEOPLE, NOT ONLY THE GAME’ Siya Kolisi, in 2018, not only became the first black test captain of the Springboks, but he has since also established himself as the most decorated Bok skipper of all time. The 34-year-old Hollywoodbets Sharks icon, however, has achieved more, far more, in terms of galvanising people as a nation through the game of rugby…

I also spoke to Frenchman Jean-Pierre Rives, who four decades ago was, like Kolisi, a cult figure as captain and flanker for both France and Racing 92, the French club that Kolisi represented in 2023, and Rives is simply amazed by the superstar players that South Africa keeps on producing.

“I don't really know the difference between a good and a very, very good player, but what I do know is that Kolisi is definitely a very, very good player, and captain,” Rives said.

“For the people, you can be a good player without being an incredible person, but Kolisi is an incredible person. What a man.

“When I see people like this, it’s incredible, more than anything. Guys who can change the people, not only change the game.

“For South Africa, as well as for rugby, Kolisi is wonderful.”

It speaks to youth in a language they understand. Sport can create hope where once there was only despair.”

Rugby certainly spoke to Siyamthanda Kolisi in a language that he not only understood but which became an allconsuming passion. He is living the dream that Madiba had 25 years ago.

Someone else who shared that dream even longer before is former Springbok and Natal captain Tom Bedford, who played the

first of his 25 tests for South Africa in 1963 exactly 50 years before Kolisi made his Bok debut in 2013.

Famous for dubbing Natal as the “Last Outpost of the British Empire” in the early 1970s, Bedford was a Bok great, whose greatness was somewhat eclipsed by his contentious and often defiant nature.

Apart from his impressive exploits on the rugby paddocks of the world, Bedford also played a profound and, often, painful part in helping to unify and ultimately restore South African rugby to the international fold. His forthright views on apartheid and his zealous efforts to help shake off the shackles of segregation in South African sport rendered him, in the words of the late Dr Danie Craven, “persona non grata” in rugby circles, and ultimately cut short his renowned international career.

Bedford (83) is on a visit from London, where he has lived for 35 years, and was introduced to the Hollywoodbets Sharks ahead of last weekend’s Investec Champions Cup match against Saracens, meeting his star successor, Siya Kolisi. @TheSharks

HENDRIKSE VS POLLARD Jordan Hendrikse has reclaimed the No. 10 jumper for today’s massive derby, and as is often the case when the Hollywoodbets Sharks and Bulls collide, the flyhalf duel could prove to be decisive.

The 24-year-old is equally adept at playing fullback and stood in at the back for the injured Aphelele Fassi last weekend against Saracens.

However, flyhalf is, by all accounts, his future, and an authoritative display at pivot today could see him entrenched in the position.

Hendrikse has previously proved himself as a man for the big moments, such as the monster penalty goal with which he clinched the Carling Currie Cup at the death in the 2024 final.

SCRUMMAGING SUPERIORITY Over the years, the scrum has evolved from a basic restart into a chief weapon of destruction. The Springboks’ supremacy in world rugby is squarely based on dominance at the set piece. And, although they have yet to fire on all cylinders, the Hollywoodbets Sharks are currently the scrummaging powerhouse in the VURC… Three weeks ago, in Newport, Wales, the Hollywoodbets Sharks monstered the Dragons at scrum time, yet they only managed to draw the contest 1717 - albeit in torrid playing condi-tions. And, a fortnight ago, even though they lost to the defending VURC champions, Leinster, in Dublin, the Durbanbased frontline unit also shunted the Irishmen backwards on occasion. If they can start maximising their scrummaging superiority, there is no reason why the Hol-lywoodbets Sharks can’t again establish themselves as one of the top teams in the competi-tion…

Handré Pollard returns to action today, after he was one of several Springboks rested for the Bulls’ Investec Champions Cup away game against the Northampton Saints last Sunday.

The Hollywoodbets Sharks have thus far in the 2025-26 VURC won 34 scrums and lost none for a 100% efficiency rate at the set piece.

Following three industrious seasons with Leicester Tigers, Pollard returned to Pretoria earlier this year. Appearing 45 times, he amassed 395 points for the Tigers.

So far, they have also enforced no fewer than 17 scrum penalties.

The Hollywoodbets Sharks enjoyed clear ascendancy at scrum time in all four matches thus far, including against the defending champions, Leinster.

Significantly, yet not surprisingly, the top three scrummaging units in the current VURC are all South African, with the Stormers and Bulls occupying the second and third spots, re-spectively, on the scrum stats table.

Pollard played a pivotal role for South Africa in both the 2019 and 2023 Rugby World Cup triumphs, and, although Sacha Feinberg-Mngomezulu has emerged as the new whizkid at 10 for the Boks, the 31-year-old Pollard still has plenty to offer for both club and country.
