LOVE IN ACTION

FROM OUR EXECUTIVE DIRECTOR

If I were to ask my friend Jessica where the headwaters of the French Broad River are, she could take me to the fifty-foot waterfall of Courthouse Creek, just north of Rosman. The third oldest river in the world has its beginnings in Transylvania County, a creek crossed easily by stepping on a few rocks.

river of justice when we create real solutions to systemic societal problems like hunger, transportation, affordable housing, and living-wage employment.

One day I stood amazed among the busyness of Sharing House. A few of our neighbors and volunteers were lending a hand to unload a large donation of food and paper goods. Receptionists were using their Google translator, to ensure everyone understood neighbors’ needs. This was the hum of an active love.

Headwaters are fascinating to me—it starts out small, and as it flows down the mountains to the gulf, the river grows in size and force.

The ministry of Sharing House is something akin to headwaters of love in action. Sharing House is the place where our congregations, donors, volunteers, staff, and neighbors gather to practice acts of love and kindness. We roll like a

This past year held many challenges for neighbors who struggle to make ends meet. The costs for housing increased by 31%, food by 11.8% and heating sources by 46%. Unemployment is at an all-time low for Transylvania County, and still Sharing House sees more people seeking services than ever before.

Sharing House is spearheading numerous coalitions to address community needs—especially around housing and

transportation. We have created the Brevard/Transylvania County Housing Coalition to increase affordable housing, working with Transylvania Habitat for Humanity. We also partnered with Transylvania Vocational Services in our Wheels to Work program and job training. This Annual Impact Report is a river map, so to speak—to both celebrate what love in action has accomplished in 2022, as well as to share gratitude to you, our donors and potential donors! Thank you for believing that we are here to ensure no need goes unmet and everyone knows, without a doubt, that they belong in this beloved community.

“...But let justice roll on like a river, and righteousness like an ever-flowing stream...”

FROM OUR BOARD PRESIDENT

2022 was a year of transition from COVID into a new “post-COVID” world. As a Board, we have been profoundly moved by the generosity of the community, as our neighbors face increasing challenges with inflation, housing instability, and resource needs. For 2023, we are focused upon “love in action,” as we seek to develop new programming for empowerment, affordable housing solutions, opportunities for social connectedness, and continued outreach to those who are struggling in our community.

As a Board, in celebration of “love in action,” we are acting upon our strategic plan and strengthening our efforts in empowerment and housing. Two years ago, we interviewed over a dozen neighbors and community members who were struggling. We learned from those interviews that housing—even for those who were currently renting—in Transylvania County experienced substantial anxi ety. They faced the risk of housing conversion, escalating rent costs, and fear that they would need to leave our community where their children attended school and

where they loved to live and to work. As a result, Shelly and Sharing House have collaborated with other nonprofits to form a housing coalition to develop creative solutions to address affordable housing in the community.

We want to ensure that all members of the Transylvania community are welcomed and embraced, and that we are making “love in action” real every day. This year, we worked more closely with Rise & Shine to distribute holiday boxes and are growing our friendships in the Rosenwald community.

It is an honor to serve as Board President of this life-affirming ministry. We thank all of you who volunteer and give the most precious resource of your time and energy, making our mission and service possible. We deeply appreciate and honor the financial gifts and donations that provide the resources needed for us to deliver our services to the community. Thank you for prayers of encouragement and support for us now and always as we seek to bring “love into action.”

GROUNDED IN GRACE

People of faith are called to love their neighbor and to take action when they witness injustice. For more than 40 years, congregations in Transylvania County have stepped up to this call through their involvement with Sharing House. Our collaborative outreach keeps neighbors in their housing by supplementing the cost of rent and utilities and offers dignity to each person through food, showers, clothing, and household goods. We go beyond meeting basic needs and empower neighbors to thrive.

We can’t do it without your service, financial support, and leadership in the community.

The pandemic made clear that housing is healthcare. As we look to the future, we envision congregational collaborations that will bring more affordable housing options to residents of Transylvania County.

We believe in the sacred worth of everyone we encounter. We hope you’ll join us in visioning what’s possible!

CRISIS ASSISTANCE

When neighbors walk in the door at Sharing House, they are greeted by friendly faces, laughter, and a compassionate group of volunteers and staff ready to offer resources and support. An environment of hospitality and hope can turn even the most challenging day around.

Neighbors visit Sharing House to select items from the pantry, to take a hot shower, to pick out a new outfit for a job interview, and to secure financial assistance for rent and utilities.

Client choice is a hallmark of the Sharing House model. “It’s important to offer people dignity in choosing what they want for themselves. It’s a big deal that they are given choices,” says Jackie Curtis, crisis services and volunteer manager.

As the largest county resource for low-income residents in Transylvania County, Sharing House works collaboratively with other agencies to

prevent evictions and keep neighbors in their homes.

In 2022, Sharing House received $100,000 through the American Rescue Plan Act, which it implemented in just four months. “During Covid, there was a lot of leeway for renters with no late charges on bills and rent. But now, it’s the worst I’ve ever seen it. If they can’t get caught up, they’ll never get out of the hole,” said Curtis.

With a tight rental market, landlords started asking for first and last month’s rent as well as a security deposit. And there is no support in the county for deposits, Curtis shared. “More and more people are doubling up, and often those situations aren’t great for all involved.”

But the community stepped up: churches pitched in toward rent, and vendor partners ensured that children could do homework in a well-lit and warm home. In-kind and financial gifts from generous supporters made all the difference during such a challenging time.

PANTRY NEWS

THE NEIGHBOR’S MARKET

Nationally, 2022 saw the highest price increase of household food— 11.8%— since 1974, and is expected to rise another 8.6% this year. Seniors and low-income households are among the most hurt by exorbitant costs in the grocery aisle. To combat the problem of inflation and food insecurity in our community, Sharing House’s neighbor-choice model saw innovations last year, which included a hybrid approach of drive-through pickup, in-person shopping, and mobile delivery. The pantry also focused on produce and fresh, healthy food choices. We formed partnerships with local farmers and shared compost to reduce food waste.

“The high cost of living and lean budgets have so many people in Transylvania County area struggling to keep a roof over their head and food on the table,” said Sara Freeman, pantry manager at Sharing House.

“We often think of food pantries in colder months, but the reality is the summer months can be just as hard, with more mouths to feed during the days when school is out of session.”

The pantry also offers pet food and personal items not covered by the Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP), such as shampoo, toilet paper, over-the-counter medications, and more.

EMPOWERMENT PROGRAMS

In addition to meeting the immediate needs of community members, a key component of Sharing House’s mission is to partner with neighbors to set goals and work toward long-term financial independence. Our empowerment programs create opportunities for knowledge sharing, skills development, and confidence-building.

GETTING AHEAD , our signature empowerment program, graduated 14 neighbors through two 15-week classes. Family and friends joined graduates to celebrate their accomplishments. Speakers included Brevard Mayor Maureen Copelof and a 2015 program graduate.

PEER MENTORING kicked off through a Community Foundation of Western North Carolina “Human Need” grant. Graduates had access to a certified life coach and were trained to be peer mentors.

THE “R” RULES FOR YOUTH , a collaboration with Davidson River School offered two nine-week classes, graduating 10 youth. The program encourages youth to identify resources and relationships for academic, career, and life planning.

STORIES AROUND THE TABLE brought neighbors together for conversations, games, and laughter at Good Shepherd Church. For so many, the pandemic increased loneliness and isolation, and community members relished the opportunity to gather in-person.

SUMMER SALADS IN THE PANTRY shared recipes for healthy and seasonal meals for neighbors on the go.

HOLIDAY ACTIVITIES such as a Christmas card class, Christmas cookie class, and a Christmas wreath class engaged community members through the leadership of neighbors and volunteers.

BIBLE STUDY met weekly on Wednesdays, led by Kimberly Dunbar from Good Shepherd Church. The group took trips to Haywood Street in Asheville and Cherokee Living Water Church, and visited a member who had suffered a stroke, offering much-needed companionship.

WHEELS TO WORK

Reliable transportation can be the difference between maintaining employment and housing. For more than 20 years, Wheels to Work has sourced vehicles for low-income neighbors, enabling them to grow their income and work toward sustainable independence.

Even with a shortage of used cars during the pandemic, Sharing House provided 16 cars to neighbors in 2022. Recipients pay $20 a month for 24 months for a total of $480. “A modest financial commitment provides a sense of ownership and empowerment,” said Susan Matthews, empowerment program manager. “And neighbors report that the payments are totally manageable with their budget.”

Community and state-wide partnerships make the program possible. Austin Cook, who owns All Speed Auto in Wilmington, NC, provided nine vehicles, and Transylvania Vocational Services referred applicants and contributed $3,500 toward the cost of each vehicle. Sharing House pays the remaining balance and first tag, tax, and title. Six additional vehicles were

donated by individual donors and the Smith Martini Foundation, which contributed over $30,000. Sharing House also covered the cost of 24 car repairs. Several recipients of Wheels to Work Car Repair make monthly payments that covers neighbors who aren’t able to work.

A grateful recipient of Neighbors Helping Neighbors sent an anonymous letter, sharing her story:

“Thank you for your kind recommendation and helping me when I was in a time of need. Recently, my 17-yearold car started giving me problems. I knew I would have to figure a way to pay for the exorbitant repair costs. In these times, we are all feeling the pinch of inflation.

I’m a senior citizen woman and found myself having to continue working part-time to make ends meet.. This is not what I had anticipated for the golden years. My car is a necessity to get me to and from work and doctor’s appointments.

I am ever so thankful for the assistance I received and that such a program exists in our community. It helped make a difference in my life and circumstances.”

POWER UP! Host a Power Up! Dinner

As heating costs soared by 46%, heating assistance was the biggest need met by Sharing House in 2022. Power Up! offers a way for community members to friend-raise and fundraise for this much-needed service. Thanks to our generous community, we kept 907 households warm last year.

Power Up! is also a great opportunity for congregations to partner to make an impact. Volunteer Polly Averette and friends coordinated with St. Philip’s Episcopal Church, the Unitarian Universalists of Transylvania County, and the Brevard Jewish Community to host a Power Up! dinner and together raised $25,000. 100% of the funds went to pay overdue heating bills for low-income residents.

We’re always amazed by the innovation of our partners and volunteers. The youth groups of the Lutheran Church of the Good Shepherd, First United Methodist Church, Brevard-Davidson River Presbyterian Church, and St. Philip’s Episcopal Church organized a take-out, drive-thru supper. CrossTown Youth, an ecumenical group in Transylvania County that provides opportunities for youth 4th through 12th grade, decorated signs, served as food “runners,” and spread awareness of the struggle neighbors face heating their homes in the colder months.

BACK TO SCHOOL

Children who experience housing instability are more likely to struggle in school and to suffer from mental health challenges than their securely housed peers. And for many parents, the required list of classroom items needed to enroll their child into school is cost-prohibitive, particularly for multi-children households. The cost to supply one student averages around $120.

Through our Back to School program, Sharing House ensured a positive start to a new school year for 658 students last year. Students were able to pick their own supplies, including notebooks, crayons, backpacks, highlighters, calculators, and more.

“Kids love to pick out their backpacks and shoes. For some, it’s their first brand new pair. To see the look in their eyes is mind-blowing,” said Lynn Traub, special projects manager. “We all remember back to school shopping with our parents or kids. We’re able to give a piece of normalcy to a family here.”

In addition to the school supplies, a generous gift from The Smith Martini Foundation of $25,000 provided each student with a new pair of shoes. “There is a lot of power in a new pair of shoes,”

said Shelly Webb, executive director of Sharing House. “This gift offers each student a growing sense of self-esteem, a boost in a new school year so they can put their best foot forward in learning.”

CHRISTMAS BLESSINGS

Many of us remember the anticipation of Christmas morning, sneaking downstairs in the dark to peek into our stockings and scope out the boxes under the tree. While joyous for some, the holidays can be a very stressful time for families struggling to make ends meet.

For 33 years, Sharing House has helped parents create magic for their children through Christmas Blessings. Last year, 958 children and youth received toys, games, and stocking stuffers.

Congregations, local businesses, and volunteers begin donating items as early as June. “We have such a generous commu -

nity. People always make sure we have what we need,” said Lynn Traub, special projects manager, whose savvy shopping skills ensure Sharing House is wellstocked with holiday delights.

Parents are able to shop for each child in their family, selecting items that suit their needs and interests. “Letting parents pick what they want for the kids is a big deal. They don’t have control of a lot in their life and offering them a choice is important. I love that,” Traub shares.

We served 14% more children in 2022 thanks to the community’s support!

OUR COMMITMENT TO SUSTAINABILITY

Sharing House is fortunate to be located in the beautiful southern Appalachian Mountains, a fragile eco-system that, like our neighbors, requires consideration and care.

Stewarding resources became an important part of the Sharing House mission in 2022. An innovative partnership with Duke Energy resulted in a change of florescent lighting to all LED lighting, saving energy and money. Sharing House also reduced its paper consumption by providing all board and committee meeting minutes digitally. We manage an encrypted charitable service database called Charity Tracker, to eliminate the need for paper records, saving trees and office space.

“Nonprofits have at their heart the desire to do good for community. We realized that there were many small changes we could make that could have a huge impact on the environment. It is a contagious attitude, to walk through the building and think of ways we can do more or do differently to be kinder to the place we live,” said Shelly Webb, director of Sharing House.

Like other nonprofits, Sharing House receives clothing items that are not suitable for redistribution and need to be discarded. Connie Byrne, a volunteer at Sharing House, discovered a partnering company called Green Zone Recycles, which collects unusable donations for textile recycling. In a typical year, we will prevent 157,000 pounds of clothing from going into the landfill.

Beverly Spicknall, pantry assistant, also established a partnership with Earth Breeze, an eco-friendly company that produces plant-based laundry detergent. By switching to this new product, Sharing House reduced the amount of space to store typical plastic packaged liquid detergent.

The Earth Breeze packaging is biodegradable and has already reduced over seven million plastic laundry detergent containers from going to landfills. This innovative partnership helps nonprofits reduce costs for service to low-income neighbors, at the same time caring for our environment.

VOLUNTEERS IN ACTION

Volunteers are the heart of Sharing House’s mission. 130 volunteers show up each week to pack food orders, sort clothing, shop for school supplies, and listen to neighbors’ stories.

When the building re-opened in April 2022, Sharing House welcomed and trained new

volunteers, ensuring the right fit for each volunteer. “We had to re-invent and re-imagine,” said Jackie Curtis, crisis services and volunteer manager. “I love the volunteers more than I can express. They give so much of their time—it blows me away.”
