IMAGINATION OF HOPE

FROM OUR EXECUTIVE DIRECTOR

I have noticed that many of my conversations with friends, with Sharing House volunteers, buzz with the question, “Am I doing enough?” As people change how they do their jobs or move through retirement, a lot of questions about vocation are surfacing: “Where am I being called to work, to focus on, to be in relationship with at this point in my life?”

Eugene Peterson was a Presbyterian minister who served the same congregation for almost 30 years. I love

“Hope is imagination put in the harness of faith.”

It means a confident, alert expectation that God will do what God said God will do. It is imagination put in the harness of faith.”

Hope is imagination put in the harness of faith. I am reminded that our calling truly is to show up in real and tangible ways to the needs of the world. Our calling is to be in relationship, sharing life with one another, giving and taking, laughing and crying, being there.

Another question I believe that one discovers in the deeper waters of grace and ministry is this: “What would it take?” What would it take for us to not waste food? What would it take for everyone to make a living wage? What would it take to make sure every child has a roof over their head?

realize had made you so tired. You may not see doves descending every day, but if you pull those muscles of hope and train your eyes for joy, there will be days so full of God’s love you will never forget it. Friends, grace leads us far from the shallows now!

his definition of God’s call to “vocation” as a long obedience in the same direction. He wrote: “Hoping does not mean doing nothing. It is not fatalistic resignation... And hoping is not dreaming. It is not spinning an illusion or fantasy to protect us from our boredom or our pain.

If you are tired, listen for how you might be called to go deeper—it sounds counterintuitive—but how and who and where is God leading you in service to others? A long obedience in the same direction means looking out beyond the familiar shorelines. that you didn’t

FROM OUR BOARD PRESIDENT

In 2023, as many Transylvania County residents struggled to make ends meet, we saw the vital role hope and inspiration played in creating social change. In the face of daunting challenges, it is hope that fuels our collective efforts and inspires us to take meaningful action. When Neighbors facing economic hardship see a glimmer of hope, whether through a listening ear or opportunities for upward mobility, they are empowered to take steps towards a brighter future.

At Sharing House, we understand the importance of continuing our services in crisis assistance as we grow our empowerment programming and explore creating affordable housing. Crisis assistance programs serve as a critical safety net for individuals and families experiencing financial insecurity and on the brink of losing housing. By providing support with essentials like rent, utilities, and food, we offer a lifeline to those facing immediate hardship, helping to prevent further economic and psychological challenges.

As Board President, I am immensely proud of Sharing House’s leadership in the community, particularly through our involvement in the Brevard-Transylvania Housing Coalition. Through collaborative efforts with local partners, we are advocating for policies and initiatives that create affordable housing solutions. As champions of living wages and access to high-quality healthcare and education, we are also committed to inspiring change that uplifts the entire community.

By fostering a sense of possibility and resilience among those we serve, we will create a ripple effect of transformation that extends far beyond individual interventions. As we continue our mission, let us remain steadfast in our commitment to providing hope, inspiration, and tangible support to our Neighbors, ensuring that no one is left behind as we move boldly forward.

CRISIS ASSISTANCE

“Despite

better in

Crisis assistance plays a pivotal role in mitigating the immediate effects of poverty by providing essential support to individuals and families facing acute financial hardship. By helping with necessities such as rent, utilities, and food, Sharing House’s programs prevent vulnerable individuals from falling deeper into poverty. By addressing urgent needs promptly, we enable recipients to stabilize their circumstances and focus on long-term solutions, such as securing employment or accessing education and training opportunities, ultimately contributing to the broader effort of poverty alleviation within our community.

experienced significant cost increases for basic living expenses. Rent, food, and medications saw unprecedented increases for one year. Housing (26%), Food (21%), Clothing (53%), Heating (30%), Showers (109%) and Prescriptions (36%) were the leading categories of need for 2023. Through a comprehensive Strategic Planning process in the summer of 2023, Sharing House heard resounding feed -

“We often hear: ‘You are the only people who care. This is the first place we came for help,” said Jackie Curtis, Sharing House’s Crisis Assistance and Volunteer Director. “We are the place to share burdens, and we may not solve all Neighbors’ problems, but when people feel lost, we help them get to the places they need to go. We also ask them: ‘Who do you talk to? Who supports you?’”

Significant increases of services were recorded during 2023, a year that

back from Neighbors that crisis assistance is essential to their survival, even as Sharing House looks to the future with plans for expanded empowerment programming and affordable housing.

PANTRY NEWS

THE NEIGHBOR’S MARKET

Food security is not just a fundamental human need; it is the cornerstone upon which stable communities, thriving economies, and healthy societies are built. 2022 was an unprecedented year for high food prices and 2023 saw a continued need for pantry services, with a 21% increase. Sharing House provided 8,164 Transylvania County residents with more than 122,000 meals in a Neighbor-choice market.

“Nearly 5,000 residents will experience food insecurity this year in Transylvania County,” said Sara Freeman, Pantry Director at Sharing House. “Through our work and collaboration with community partners, our goal is to ensure no child or adult goes to bed hungry.”

In addition to ongoing food drives led by individuals, community groups, and congregations throughout the year, the May and November Pack the Pantry events raised more than $22,000 and 11,500 pounds of food.

In its 16th year, Diner’s Extravaganza garnered the support of more than 30 local restaurants and raised nearly $20,000 for the Neighbor’s Market.

The pantry team also collaborated with Rise and Shine to host a “Thanksgiving Table-To-Go,” including meal essentials such as fresh fruits and vegetables and makings for favorite Thanksgiving sides.

COMMUNITY LEADERSHIP

BUILDING TRAUMA RESILIENT COMMUNITIES

As a backbone agency of the Western North Carolina Trauma Resilient Community Project (WNC-TRC), Sharing House is committed to staff development and growth that helps us transform our organization and team to be trauma-responsive, resilient, and healing-centered. Through regular training and workshops, we are helping to develop a support system and reduce the occurrences and impact of Adverse Childhood Experiences (ACEs), community violence, and toxic stress among children and their families. The Sharing House team decided to dedicate the second Wednesday of every month in 2024 to trauma resiliency training.

BREVARD-TRANSYLVANIA HOUSING COALITION

Currently, 45 percent of renters in our county struggle with housing costs, and 35 percent of residents are considered low-income. Through our leadership as co-founders of the coalition, we’ve helped bring together nonprofit organizations, government agencies, clergy, and concerned citizens to advocate for affordable housing and to create local solutions. In August, we partnered with Habitat for Humanity to host a Rosenwald Community Celebration of several new affordable housing projects. And we received a $25,000 grant from Dogwood Health Trust to support the Brevard First United Methodist Church’s teacher housing initiative in Rosman.

BLESSING OF THE LAND

To further our mission to establish enduring solutions to poverty and hunger in Transylvania County, in November Sharing House acquired one acre of land with two residences across from our existing building on Duckworth Avenue.

Our vision for our existing property and the new property includes: a trauma-informed Neighborhood Empowerment Center with common areas to gather and share meals, showers, mail services, computers/ breakout rooms, and space for partners to provide employment support/job training, workshops on personal finance, social enterprise solutions, mental health/substance use support, and peer-to-peer mentoring.

The vision also includes Neighbor-governed affordable housing with supportive programming. The “village” would include responsibility of residency for all who live there and equity-building so renters can build a “nest egg,” receiving a portion of rent back when they move out.

BACK TO SCHOOL

Back-to-school shopping is crucial as it ensures children have the necessary supplies and clothing to start the academic year with confidence, enabling them to fully engage in their education without the burden of unmet basic needs. Through this annual, seasonal program, low-resourced students are welcome to pick their own school supplies, backpacks, shoes, socks, underwear, and more. Through the generosity of donors and partners like the Smith Martini Foundation, Sharing House is also able to offer new shoes and socks to local youth.

“Children who experience housing instability are more likely to struggle in school and to suffer from mental health challenges than their securely housed peers,” said Lynn Traub, Sharing House special projects manager. “And for many parents, the required list of classroom items needed to enroll their child into school is cost-prohibitive, particularly for multi-children households. The cost to supply one student averages around $120.”

This year, the Back-to-School program incorporated a new facet: haircuts for 35 youth donated by local stylists and 12

gift certificates to Shear Chaos. Donning their new cuts, participants enjoyed ice cream sundaes dished up by Sharing House volunteers.

CHRISTMAS BLESSINGS

For 33 years, Sharing House has helped parents create magical holiday moments for their children with new toys, games, books, and stocking stuffers. This year, we served a record number of children—1,074—a 12% increase from 2022. Holiday shopping began in mid-November and carried through the week until Christmas. Parents are not only able to shop for their children but can wrap their gifts before leaving Sharing House.

Volunteers from across the community kept the festive spirit humming, including Spanish-speaking volunteers.

The impact of the Christmas Blessings program was featured on local tv station WLOS.

“I’m seeing a lot of folks that haven’t had to use the program in a while start using the program again, and a lot of folks that aren’t necessarily part of the Sharing House who are requesting assistance because of the increased cost of living,” said Lynn Traub, special projects manager. “It’s such a blessing for all of them to be able to come in and do that and have fun and be normal.”
