Changing Futures

A quarterly publication of Children’s Fund

During the pandemic, Jamie Griffin, a local nurse, and her family suffered a series of tragic and unfortunate events that pushed them into a financial deficit. Children’s Fund was there to help.

Family Sees a Brighter Future The past year has been hard on everyone—families already struggling pre-pandemic, children learning from home, and even stable, working professionals. The hardships due to economic stress, health concerns, and even the loss of those close to them have taken a toll.

Mrs. Griffin is one of many hard-working heroic nurses that have served their community during the COVID-19 pandemic. At a time when this job may be at its most stressful, she sadly lost the father of her children. As if this was not enough to put strain on her and her family, her mother came down with a medical condition that requires the home to be at a constant, low, and tolerable temperature. This caused Mrs. Griffin’s utility bills to skyrocket at a time when her financial support had diminished.

With two children and a growing pile of bills, Mrs. Griffin turned to one of Children’s Fund’s Resource Agencies, The Making A Difference Association. They were able to link her with our Emergency Needs Program.

In order to help the Griffin Family, Children’s Fund provided them with gift cards for new clothing and hygiene items for the children, as well as funds to help with the past due utility bills. (continues on page 2)

Message From the President As Summer is coming to a close, I have reflected on the past few months with relief, joy, and gratefulness.

Our golfers and banquet guests enjoyed a great day while participating in silent and live auctions, hearing from Demetreous Stillman, a scholarship recipient, and helping us raise over $240,000 for the children in our county.

Throughout the pandemic, Children’s Fund remained open to serve vulnerable children in our county. We endure, committed to ensuring that any child experiencing poverty, abuse, or neglect receives the essential services and support they need. Children requiring emergency needs help, students lacking school supplies or funds to purchase textbooks, and those unfortunate children requiring assistance at the Children’s Assessment Center all received the services they needed. This assistance is only possible because of you and your generous support of our efforts and mission. This year, we implemented our Backpack & School Supplies Drive differently. Our partnership with the Sydney Paige Foundation provided high-quality backpacks and school supplies at reduced prices while still practicing social distancing. With the generous monetary donations received, plus several corporate in-kind donations, we provided 2,246 children with new backpacks filled with all of their needed supplies. In addition, we partnered with several community organizations to provide an additional 9,000 backpacks to children in need. We recently hosted our 29th Annual Children’s Fund Golf Classic and Founders’ Award Banquet. This year’s honoree was Diversified Pacific Communities. Jeff Burum and Matt Jordan were present to accept the award in recognition of their commitment to provide Support, Opportunity, and Hope to our county’s most vulnerable children.

Matt Jordan (left) and Jeff Burum (right) accept the Founders’ Award on behalf of Diversified Pacific Communities at the 29th Annual Children’s Fund Golf Classic.

I am full of gratitude for you and all those who provide love, assistance, and financial and in-kind gifts to Children’s Fund and the children we serve. YOU make it possible for us to provide brighter futures for children.

Ciriaco “Cid” Pinedo, Ed.D.

Family Sees a Brighter Future — Continued from page 1 We were happy to be able to help a woman who has dedicated her skills and energy to helping others every day during these turbulent times. Fortunately, Mrs. Griffin’s brother has been helping out financially and she has been able to apply for financial assistance for her mother as she deals with her illness. Thanks to our donors and supporter who make the Emergency Needs Program possible. This remarkable woman and her children have certainly faced hardships, but thanks to you, we see a brighter future ahead for them.

COLLECTIVE GENEROSITY In a Pandemic Year, our Auxiliaries Excel This past year, during the COVID 19 pandemic, it was difficult to conduct in-person events, the main method of fundraising for the Bonnes Meres and West End Auxiliaries of Children’s Fund. But that didn’t stop the hardworking, dedicated ladies from finding a way to meet their goals. This past year, the Bonnes Meres Auxiliary, comprising of volunteers in the Redlands area, conducted a COVID Relief campaign, the highly anticipated Fall Auction online, and a drive-thru Birthday Luncheon that collectively yielded a generous $84,150 donation. The West End Auxiliary, whose membership lives in Claremont and the west end of the county, planned their second annual Virtual Run, Walk, Hike, the English Tea, a Garden Tour and Workshop, and an upscale yard sale they called ‘Found Treasures.” The success of these events, plus many smaller fundraisers, permitted the West End to donate $100,500 to Children’s Fund.

Bonnes Meres Auxiliary

Both Auxiliaries also worked diligently making tied blankets for children, yielding hundreds that we donated to local shelters and the Children’s Assessment Center. And the West End Auxiliary started the monthly Benevolence Drive, donating nearly $19,000 in in-kind donations such as books, snacks, sheets, blankets, and hygiene items to Children’s Fund. There is no denying that our Auxiliaries far exceeded their goals and goes to show that nothing can stop a dedicated group of volunteers, not even a world-wide pandemic.
