Our History
Children’s Fund was founded in 1986, as a collective brainchild of longtime child advocates Patrick Morris, then presiding Judge of the San Bernardino County Juvenile Court, the late Jack Brown, then Chairman and CEO of Stater Bros. Markets, and the late A. Gary Anderson, then Directors Mortgage Chairman and CEO. They believed that local government agencies, the business community, and nonprofits could be more effective by combining their efforts. The approach, once thought of as experimental, has been successful for 40 years.

Dave “Jim” Harris
Dave Harris is a seasoned finance executive and longtime Inland Empire leader whose career spans nearly four decades across public accounting, corporate finance, and community service.
He began his professional journey at Ernst & Young, where he worked from 1984 to 2004 in Riverside and Irvine. During his tenure, he rose to Managing Partner of the Riverside office prior to its consolidation with Irvine. In addition to his leadership responsibilities, he directed the Inland Empire Entrepreneur of the Year program for five years, helping spotlight and support regional business innovation.
Following his time at Ernst & Young, Harris joined Soren McAdam Christenson as a partner from 2005 to 2009. He then transitioned into the corporate sector with Stater Bros. Markets, where he served from 2009 until his retirement in October 2023. During his tenure, he held the roles of Senior Vice President, Finance & Chief Financial Officer (2012–2013), and later Executive Vice President, Finance & Chief Financial Officer (2013–2023). Across his career, Harris accumulated more than 25 years of experience in accounting, auditing, finance, and advisory services, working with both public and privately held companies as well as entrepreneurial ventures.
Harris earned his Bachelor of Science in Accounting in 1984 from California State Polytechnic University, Pomona. He is a retired, inactive Certified Public Accountant in the state of California.
Beyond his professional accomplishments, Harris has been deeply engaged in civic and nonprofit leadership throughout the Inland Empire. He is a past member of the California Society of Certified Public Accountants and the American Institute of Certified Public Accountants. His community involvement includes extensive service with Children’s Fund, where he held multiple roles including Board Chairman, Treasurer, and Executive committee member. Harris served as Board Chair from 2004-2005. When asked about his experience with the organization, he had this to say, “An organization like Children’s Fund supports young children and adults who don’t have the opportunity to take their future and life for granted. There are many who need the comfort that someone has their back. I was honored to be part of a pivotal period of growth for Children’s Fund, one that included moving into our own administrative offices and recruiting and hiring an Executive Director to lead its next chapter.”
He has also served as a board member and treasurer for the Inland Empire Economic Partnership and held multiple leadership roles with the United Way of the Inland Valleys, including chairman of the board and treasurer. Additional service includes participation on the advisory council for the UC Riverside Anderson Graduate School of Management, as well as board roles with the Greater Riverside Chambers of Commerce, the Riverside Downtown Association, and March of Dimes. He is also a founding board member of the Moreno Valley California Youth Soccer Association.
A lifelong resident of the Inland Empire, Harris has built both his education and career in the region. He and his wife, Cheryl, have three sons and ten grandchildren. His family continues a strong tradition of professional and public service, with careers spanning accounting and public safety.

Vicente De Baise Wright
Vicente Wright is a seasoned executive in the global metals and mining industry, with a career spanning several decades and key markets including the United States, Brazil, Japan, and France. He is most widely recognized for his leadership at California Steel Industries (CSI) and his later contributions as a board member at AK Steel Holdings Corporation.
Wright’s connection to CSI began early in his career and evolved into a defining chapter of his professional life. In 1984, at just 29 years old, he played a pivotal role in laying the groundwork for the company’s future success. While working as a marketing manager at Siderúrgica de Tubarão in Brazil, he engineered a critical slab supply agreement that enabled CSI to begin its manufacturing operations in Fontana, California.
Over the next 15 years, Wright held several senior leadership positions at CSI. From 1998 to 2003, he served as Executive Vice President of Finance, where he oversaw financial planning, investment strategy, and corporate governance. His leadership capabilities led to his appointment as President and CEO in 2003. During this first term, he successfully guided the company through challenging global steel market conditions, reversing consecutive quarterly losses and delivering strong financial performance by the end of the year.
In 2004, Wright transitioned to Chairman of the Board, a role he held until 2008, in alignment with CSI’s shareholder rotation agreement between JFE Steel Corporation and Vale. He returned as President and CEO in 2008, once again taking on operational leadership during a critical period. Near the end of this second term, he resumed the role of Chairman and approved a transformative $100 million modernization initiative—the largest capital investment in CSI’s history at that time.
In parallel with his work at CSI, Wright built an international career with Vale S.A. (formerly Companhia Vale do Rio Doce), one of the world’s leading mining companies. Rising through the executive ranks, he ultimately served as Director of Iron Ore and Pellet Sales, overseeing major commercial operations across South America, Asia, and North America.
Following his retirement from day-to-day operations, Wright continued to contribute his expertise at the board level. He joined the board of AK Steel in 2013 and served until the company’s acquisition by Cleveland-Cliffs in 2020. During his tenure, he was an active member of both the Audit Committee and the Corporate Sustainability Committee, helping guide the company through a period of industry transformation.
In addition to his corporate roles, Wright has contributed to broader industry leadership. He served on the board of the American Iron and Steel Institute and held positions on several regional metals and ferroalloy boards across Brazil, Argentina, and France.
Wright earned his Bachelor of Business Administration in Marketing from Marquette University, providing the foundation for a career defined by international leadership and strategic impact in the steel and mining sectors.
Wright led as Board Chair of Children’s Fund from 2013-2014. When asked why he chose to support and lead Children’s Fund, Vicente said, “Simply put, because we are reaching out to underpriviledged children. I was blessed with a loving and happy family which in turn, provided me with a safe childhood along with an education that led me to a successful professional life. As much as possible, my challenge and my goal is to give back wholeheartedly my time and hopefully share my acquired experiences and network to help our community’s children improve their living standards.”

Children’s Fund Provides...
Support by providing the services and tangible items such as food, clothing, shoes, personal hygiene-care products, refrigerators, beds and bedding, rental and utility assistance, orthodontic care, baby-care items, school supplies, and other vital items that our children and youth in crisis need to meet their basic needs to create stability through our emergency needs program, educational support program, annual family fair and the attentive care provided at the Children’s Assessment Center.
Opportunity by ensuring that children and youth experiencing poverty, abuse, and neglect meet and exceed their potential by providing recreational and post-secondary educational scholarships and life-enriching experiences.
Hope by inspiring, motivating, and challenge our children to dream. We accomplish this by helping our children and youth celebrate the holidays distributing over 60,000 toys annually, celebrating birthdays, and important life milestones such as graduation, entering college, and adoption. A meaningful gift can mean the world to a child to nurture their hope so that they can continue to dream and work towards a brighter future.
2024-2025 Impact
Last year, because of you... Children’s Fund positively impacted a total of 58.877 children and individuals providing Support, Opportunity, and Hope.
Support Programs
22,183 children and their family members received vital Support services that included: 4,340 children in crisis stabilized through our Emergency Needs Program.
3,333 students started school equipped with backpacks and supplies through the Educational Support Program.
152 children received Orthodontia Care.
1,070 children and their family members received household goods through our distribution events. 627 children and their family members were provided with housing services through Project SAFE (Supporting and Assisting Families Excel).
679 individuals participated in preventative informative educational CSEC (Commercial Sexual Exploitation of Children) Workshops.
625 youth in foster care received a hygiene kit to start the new school year with confidence. 9,739 children received compassionate post-trauma medical and legal care at the Children’s Assessment Center (CAC) and the Resiliency Institute for Childhood Adversity (RICA).
1,618 children and their family members received personalized family support services.
Opportunity Programs
1,119 children gained access to new Opportunities through services that included:
63 high school graduates awarded Post-Secondary Educational Scholarship.
198 children and youth received a Recreational/Extracurricular Scholarship.
12 teens built leadership skills at Summer Leadership Camp.
446 youth participated in Life Enrichment Programs that expanded learning and personal growth.
400 youth discovered the joy of athletics at the annual Sports Fair and shoe distribution.
Hope Programs
35,575 children experienced Hope through programs such as: 32,273 holiday gifts distributed to children during our Celebration of Giving Program.
2,215 children celebrated milestones and created lasting memories through our Celebrating Life’s Milestones Programming.
1,087 children found comfort with special items while visiting the Dependency Court Playroom.
