CONVENTION SPOTLIGHTS We hope this issue of Momentum inspires you to register for #SHAPEKC! In our cover story, you’ll find lots of details to help you plan your experience, including information about pre-conference events, new workshops, a schedule-at-a-glance, an expo hall guide, and more. Another convention-focused feature, “SUNY Cortland Students Expand Their Horizons at National Convention,” includes a Q&A with Bryce Farrell, faculty advisor of Cortland’s Alliance of Physical Education Majors. She shares what motivates her students to attend the national convention, how the club plans for the event, and the value these experiences bring to future educators. I loved working with distinguished physical educator and guest author Jayne Greenberg on her Reflection column for this issue. In this heartwarming piece, Jayne reflects on her 47-year convention tradition and what the national convention has meant to her throughout every chapter of her career. We hope you’ll join us at #SHAPEKC to connect with colleagues who share your dedication to health and physical education. To everyone in our HPE community, thanks for all you do!

Kansas City, Here We Come! Joe Deutsch, President @DrJoeDeutsch

I

t’s almost time — #SHAPEKC is right around the corner, and I can’t wait to see our professional community come together for the 2026 SHAPE America National Convention & Expo. Each year, this gathering reminds me why our work matters so deeply. It’s more than a professional development opportunity — it’s a celebration of connection, collaboration and our shared commitment to ensuring all students have access to high-quality health and physical education. This spring, thousands of health and physical educators, higher education professionals, researchers and leaders from across the country will converge in Kansas City, Missouri — a vibrant, welcoming city known for its creativity, hospitality and energy. With its legendary barbecue, live music and walkable downtown, Kansas City provides the perfect backdrop for learning, networking and fun. Whether you’re catching up with colleagues over dinner, exploring Union Station or discovering the Power & Light District, you’ll find plenty of opportunities to connect both inside and outside the convention center. Inside those convention walls, you’ll experience the best of what SHAPE America has to offer. This year’s program is packed with sessions designed to inspire and equip you with strategies you can take back to your schools and communities. We’re especially excited about two dynamic general sessions. At Tuesday afternoon’s Opening General Session, Catherine Sanderson, acclaimed author, researcher and professor of

psychology at Amherst College, will explore the fascinating science behind happiness — especially through the lens of teaching and education. Drawing on groundbreaking research in positive psychology, she’ll share practical, research-based tools that can help educators boost their own well-being and, in turn, positively impact their students and school communities. During the Closing General Session, the U.S. Soccer Foundation will tap into the excitement surrounding the upcoming World Cup with a panel discussion on how sport — particularly soccer — can transform lives and build stronger, healthier communities. The conversation will highlight the power of movement and play to unite people across backgrounds, schools and communities. For those eager to get hands-on, the convention will feature several interactive workshops designed to deliver practical, immediately applicable strategies, including: • Health-Related Fitness in PE – A Physical Best Workshop (held on Saturday morning) will showcase engaging, inclusive ways to make fitness meaningful for every student, aligned with our upcoming Physical Best, Fifth Edition, set for release in March 2026. • Also on Saturday, Implementing the New SHAPE America National Health Education Standards will guide participants through the new standards, providing tools to build skills-based, student-centered health education programs.

• NFL FLAG-In-School Training, a free pre-convention event sponsored by GENYOUth, will give participants a ready-to-implement curriculum and a free NFL FLAGIn-School kit valued at $420. • Soccer for Success Training, a free pre-convention event sponsored by the U.S. Soccer Foundation, will offer expert instruction and on-the-pitch activities, as well as a complete package which includes a curriculum and free equipment. Of course, no SHAPE America convention would be complete without celebrating our National Teachers of the Year and all the dedicated educators, researchers and leaders who make our profession thrive. These moments of recognition remind us that while our work can sometimes feel solitary, we are part of a powerful, passionate and united community. And speaking of community — rumor has it that a certain “Sly Fox” might just make a special appearance in Kansas City. You never know when the Sly one will show up, but one thing’s for sure: He’ll bring his trademark energy, passion and positivity to the convention floor. So, pack your bags and get ready for a week of inspiration and connection in the heart of America. I can’t wait to see you — and maybe channel a little of that “Sly Fox” spirit — in Kansas City, where together, we’ll learn, grow and shape the future of health and physical education.

FROM THE CEO

Stronger Together: Recommitting to Our Shared Mission Stephanie Morris, CEO @SHAPEAmericaCEO

O

ver the past couple of years, we’ve been on quite a journey together as a SHAPE America community. Our goal has been simple, but meaningful: to strengthen our connection with state affiliates and reaffirm our shared commitment to advancing health and physical education for all students. This process has been thoughtful, collaborative and grounded in a belief we all share — that we are stronger when we work together. The past several months have been filled with open conversations, feedback sessions and small group discussions with state leaders from across the country. Together, we’ve listened, learned and shaped what is now a revised state affiliate agreement — one that reflects our shared mission, clarifies our partnership and positions us to advocate more effectively on behalf of teachers and students nationwide. This work represents the very best of who we are as a professional community. It has taken time, care and an incredible amount of dedication from so many

people. I especially want to thank the State Affiliate Advisory Council (SAAC), co-chaired by Mark Foellmer and Megan McCollom, and the Committee to Update the SHAPE America State Affiliate Agreement (CUSASAA), co-chaired by Mark Foellmer and Amy Heuer. These leaders — along with all the state leaders and district directors who serve in these groups — have given their time, energy and insight to help shape a strong, cohesive agreement that reflects our shared values and vision. The result is something we can all be proud of. The new state affiliate agreement is clear, inclusive and high level — designed to define the relationship between SHAPE America and each state affiliate in a transparent way, while allowing every state to remain fully independent and autonomous in its operations. It’s meant to clarify how we work together, not to prescribe what we must do. It’s also important to note that this new agreement isn’t exclusive. We absolutely support states partnering with any other organizations that help strengthen their

work. At the same time, and consistent with SHAPE America’s bylaws, we’ll continue to recognize and support one affiliate organization per state to maintain clarity and cohesion across our network. Now, as we move forward, we’re inviting every state to sign this new agreement and join us in this next chapter. This is our opportunity to recommit — to each other, to our mission and to the health and success of our nation’s students. When we speak with one, unified voice, we have greater power to advocate, to lead and to make lasting change. And what better time to celebrate that than at #SHAPEKC? I can’t wait to gather with so many of you there — to connect and celebrate the work we’ve done together. The SHAPE America National Convention & Expo is always a highlight of the year, and this one will be especially meaningful as we lift up our incredible state affiliate leaders and celebrate this renewed commitment to moving forward together. We’ve accomplished so much already, and I truly believe this next chapter will be our strongest yet.

Using Data to Drive Excellence in Health and PE By Carly Wright, Chief Program Officer @CWrightHPE

I

n our ever-evolving educational landscape, data has emerged as a powerful ally for health and physical education teachers dedicated to advocating for their programs and enhancing student outcomes. If you would like to hear more about the transformative potential of data and how it can be a cornerstone of advocacy for HPE policies and programs, join me and my co-presenter Keri Schoeff of the Arizona Department of Education for our session at the 2026 SHAPE America National Convention & Expo: Using Data to Drive Excellence — What Every Health and Physical Education Teacher Should Know. We’ll discuss the vital role that data plays beyond core subjects, highlighting its significance in health and physical education. The focus will be on how educators can harness data to inform their instruction, boost student engagement, and demonstrate the tangible impact of their programs. Attendees will walk away from this interactive session with practical strategies for collecting meaningful data, interpreting those results, and applying insights to improve teaching practices and elevate student performance.

More Advocacy Sessions at #SHAPEKC Looking to grow your HPE advocacy skills? Make sure you add these sessions to your schedule at the national convention!

Turning Passion Into Policy: Lessons From the Journey In this interactive session, explore real-world lessons learned from engaging in policy-related advocacy including strategies that worked, challenges that arose and unexpected learning.

Policy Champions: Overcoming Advocacy Barriers Engage with an expert panel of policy champions to discuss the challenges and successes of implementing state-level scholarship and advocacy to influence policy.

Designing and Promoting a Seal of Physical Literacy: A Framework for Recognition and Readiness Discover how a “seal of physical literacy” can elevate the role of physical education in preparing students for lifelong wellness and career readiness.

UNDERSTANDING THE KEY METRICS While many are familiar with standardized testing in education, HPE teachers have different and unique metrics that matter. In our session, we’ll highlight these key indicators including student participation rates, student assessments, and health literacy benchmarks, and how they align with broader school and district goals. By understanding and utilizing these metrics effectively, we can not only show the value of health and physical education but also advocate for the necessary resources and support for our programs. ADVOCACY THROUGH DATA Data serves not just as a tool for personal and programmatic improvement, but also as a means of advocating for our programs. In our session, we’ll also discuss strategies for using data to communicate successes and challenges to influential stakeholders, including policymakers, school administrators, parents, and the school community. Advocacy is crucial in ensuring that every child has access to effective health and physical education that nurtures their overall well-being and supports them throughout their educational career and life. I encourage you to join us at #SHAPEKC for this session designed to empower HPE educators. Together, we will harness the power of data to inspire excellence, advocate effectively for our programs, and ultimately support the health and wellness of the whole child. Thank you for your unwavering commitment to advancing health and physical education. I look forward to seeing you all at the convention! Winter 2026 • Momentum

REFLECTION

My 47-Year Convention Tradition Distinguished physical educator Jayne Greenberg reflects on what the national convention has meant to her through every chapter of her career

W

here it all began. As an undergraduate student at the University of Massachusetts, Amherst, not only did I receive a world-class education preparing me for what has become my professional calling as an educator, but there was also the expectation instilled in us that being a professional educator came with a commitment to being a lifelong learner. Thus, in 1978 I joined AAHPER (now SHAPE America). In 1979, I attended my first national convention. I was a master’s student at Florida International University in Miami when three colleagues and I decided to go to New Orleans for the event. After that experience, I was hooked on the benefits of attending the national convention, which led to a career filled with lifelong “frolleagues” — friends who became colleagues and colleagues who became friends! To this day, they are still only a phone call, email or text away from connecting.

MY FAVORITE MEMORIES My favorite memories occurred during that first convention in New Orleans. Having limited funds, the four of us shared a room and begged for support for all other costs, often attending various socials for free food and beverages. When we checked in, we went through the printed program together (yes, there were hard-copy programs) and checked off the sessions we were interested in. Each day of the convention, we all went to different sessions to “divide and conquer” — regrouping at the end of the day to compare notes and share what we had collectively learned. Then it was time to enjoy the city and embrace the excitement every night. We found that happy balance of working hard and playing hard. My next memorable experience was when the power went out at the national convention in Boston in 2012. We all made new friends while searching for working electrical outlets to charge our cellphones. Although the convention was cut short, the laughs and memories made it all worthwhile. We made the best of it — and to this day still talk about it when the lights flicker during a convention session! WHY I RETURN

The 2019 SHAPE America National Convention & Expo in Tampa was a great one! I was honored to speak to attendees at the Fuel Up to Play 60 NFL FLAG-inSchools Training pre-conference event (above) — and receiving the SHAPE America Hall of Fame Award (at left) is an honor I will always cherish.

12

Momentum • Winter 2026

The greatest benefit of attending the national convention is definitely the networking! Being able to participate in cordial discussions or “spirited” debates only makes us stronger — I know from personal experience! The educational sessions are critically important as well — for preservice PETE/HETE students, early career professionals, veteran teachers, administrators, and researchers. The hands-on, interactive activity sessions are fun and inspiring, but it’s also important to attend research sessions. Those presentations equip you to answer questions posed by superintendents or school board members about “why” you are advocating for daily physical education. When you follow the science and stay grounded in the research, you’ll have all the backing you need. Another important reason to attend the national convention is to explore the expo hall and interact with the exhibitors. Many exhibitors are former physical educators — with considerable experience — so they have firsthand knowledge of program needs. As an administrator who brought in over $30 million in federal, foundation, state and local grants for Miami-Dade County Public Schools (M-DCPS), I always made it a priority to get to know the exhibitors and learn more about their products and resources. This was how I knew the district’s funds were well spent.

WHERE I AM NOW During the 24 years I served as district director of physical education and health literacy at M-DCPS — and throughout my career — I depended on what I learned from attending sessions and presenting at national conventions … and still do to this day! Educators always continue to learn from each other as our programs evolve, and the needs of students evolve. Most of my time now is spent as an international consultant and mentoring young professionals on ethical leadership — preparing them for the next stage of their careers in physical education leadership (whether as a department chair or districtlevel administrator), while embracing the principles of emotional intelligence in every decision made. In March, I look forward to seeing lifelong colleagues at the SHAPE America National Convention & Expo in Kansas City, where I’ll be celebrating my 47th year as an attendee! If you’re heading to #SHAPEKC — which I hope you are — let’s connect either through a hug, a wave or a high five. You can find me at the Human Kinetics exhibit booth, where I’ll be humbly and proudly showcasing my three books: Organization and Administration of Physical Education: Theory and Practice; Designing and Teaching Fitness Education Courses; and — heads up — the newly released Physical Best, Fifth Edition (which I co-edited with SHAPE America President Joe Deutch). I sincerely believe that the best thing you can do for your continual professional growth is to always plan on attending the SHAPE America National Convention & Expo — and meet one new person each year. This will exponentially expand your frolleague network! My wish is that you have the same blessed career that I have had through building and maintaining connections and relationships in our most precious profession, serving kids and supporting teachers.

The Power of Movement, Mindfulness and Community at Greenwood Elementary By Jake McDermott, Physical Education Teacher, Greenwood Elementary School (PA)

A

t Greenwood Elementary, our goal has always been to help students grow not just physically, but emotionally and socially as well. When I first learned about the health. moves. minds.® program during my time at West Chester University, I was drawn to how it went beyond a traditional fundraiser — it encouraged movement, mindfulness and kindness all at once. When the opportunity arose to bring the program to Greenwood, it felt like the perfect fit. We wanted something that reflected what we teach every day in health and PE — that wellness includes both the body and the mind, and that each student can make a difference in their school and community. Our school chose to raise funds to support our own health and physical education program, which helped us purchase new PE equipment for all grade levels. This ensured that every student benefitted from the fundraiser’s success. We also used a portion of the funds to host our annual Field Day, which we held at the high school fields due to construction at our building.

That event — celebrating fitness, teamwork and community — truly embodied what health. moves. minds. is all about. MOTIVATING STUDENTS WITH MEANINGFUL REWARDS

Spirit days, classroom rewards and shoutouts during announcements built excitement and reinforced our shared goals. One of the most memorable moments came at our “Pie in the Face” assembly, where students who reached their goals got

to see their teachers (including me!) take a pie for a great cause. The laughter and energy that filled the room perfectly captured the spirit of the fundraiser — fun, togetherness and pride in what we achieved as a school. CONNECTING LESSONS TO LEARNING We incorporated health. moves. minds. lessons throughout our health and PE classes, connecting movement and mindfulness in meaningful ways. Students practiced self-awareness, kindness and goal setting while engaging in activities that promoted physical fitness and teamwork. Many classroom teachers also joined in, creating daily kindness challenges or short mindfulness moments with their students. This consistency across subjects reinforced the message that physical and emotional wellness go hand in hand — a lesson our students truly took to heart. CELEBRATING AS A COMMUNITY The excitement continued with our celebration events. Along with our “Pie in the Face” assembly, we held a special PE cycle of “Minute to Win It” and Dude Perfect–style trick shot stations that gave students a chance to celebrate their hard work through fun, active challenges. Our culminating event, Field Day, was a highlight of the year. Families came out to see firsthand how their support had made a difference, and students proudly demonstrated

new equipment and shared what they had learned. It was the perfect blend of fitness, fun and gratitude. A LASTING IMPACT The positive effects of the fundraiser reached far beyond the event itself. We saw improvements in teamwork, empathy and sportsmanship across grade levels. Students encouraged one another, worked together during combined PE classes, and carried those same values into other parts of the school day. Field Day was one of the most successful and positive events in recent memory — a true celebration of community and inclusion. Families, staff and students alike felt connected to a shared purpose, and the pride in our school was unmistakable. LOOKING AHEAD After seeing the impact of the program, there’s no question that Greenwood will continue participating. The health. moves. ® minds., powered by Booster program aligns beautifully with our mission and provides an authentic way to teach wellness, kindness and mindfulness while directly supporting our students. My advice for other schools is simple: Jump in and make it your own. Start small, connect it to what you already teach, and let the excitement grow. The fundraiser isn’t just about raising money — it’s about building a culture of wellness, empathy and pride that lasts long after the final celebration.

SUNY Cortland Students Expand Their Horizons at the National Convention

W

ith one of the nation’s largest PETE programs, SUNY Cortland carries a proud legacy of sending teacher candidates to local, state and national conferences — including the SHAPE America National Convention & Expo. Attendees are typically members of the department’s major club: Alliance of Physical Education Majors (APEM). In this Q&A, APEM faculty advisor Bryce Farrell shares how attending the national convention becomes an investment in students’ personal and professional growth. Q: Why does your university/department prioritize sending students to the national convention, and what motivates your students to prioritize attending the event? A: Professional development is a central priority within our undergraduate program. As one of the largest PETE programs in the country, our students know that they must seek out opportunities to stand out during the job search process. Attending SHAPE America’s National Convention & Expo exposes students to experiences and perspectives beyond what they encounter here

While attending the national convention, Cortland students take time to explore the host city, creating lasting memories with their peers.

on campus. It provides opportunities to learn from professionals in the field, diversify one’s knowledge and skill set, gain tangible tools, and network with educators, administrators and other future professionals. Students are motivated by the positive experiences shared by past attendees, as well as the opportunity for personal and professional growth. Cortland offers many local and small-scale professional development opportunities, so many students are excited to broaden their knowledge by traveling out of state. Finally, many students note the strong bonds they form with their peers while attending a national convention. The adventure promotes strong cohesion and synergy that carries them through the remainder of their program here and beyond. Q: How does your club plan and fundraise to attend the SHAPE America National Convention & Expo each year?

Above all, our students recommended prioritizing this experience and stress that the trip is worth the investment.

18

Momentum • Winter 2026

A: Planning begins early, with coordination by the club’s executive board and faculty advisor. Club members request to attend and club leadership identifies who is eligible to go to the convention. Priority is given to active members (those who have attended at least half of meetings during the prior semester) and upperclassmen. Fortunately, as a college-sanctioned club, APEM receives a generous club budget from the Student Government Association and designates a significant portion toward professional development opportunities. Students

Above all, our students recommended prioritizing this experience and stress that the trip is worth the investment. Begin planning early, prepare well in advance, and build enthusiasm among your students to ensure a meaningful and successful trip! Q: Any favorite convention memories or standout experiences from past years?

selected to attend the convention receive financial support for travel, food and lodging. The student is responsible for paying their convention registration. To support the cost of attending, most of our students take on volunteer shifts — and we are continually grateful to the SHAPE America professionals who help us to coordinate group participation in the convention. Q: How do students benefit — professionally and personally — from attending? A: Students experience both professional and personal growth through their attendance. Professionally, they enjoy sessions that allow them to explore different areas within physical education. For example, APEM vice president Logan Babcock, a senior from Macedon, NY, shared: “I found what I was passionate about in PE by attending the national convention: adapted and elementary PE.”

A: Some of our favorite memories include discovering innovative equipment at the Expo, such as the Omnikin ball, and meeting educators from across the country. Students have enjoyed learning new teaching styles — like storytelling approaches — and connecting with graduate program representatives to explore future opportunities. It’s always rewarding to meet colleagues in person after months of online communication, reconnect with Cortland alumni, and explore the host cities together. In addition to the conference sessions, we’ve attended NBA and MLB games, tried new restaurants, visited world-class museums, and had wonderful adventures as professionals and future professionals alike!

Cortland students often serve as volunteer greeters (at right).

Personally, students gain confidence by stepping outside their comfort zones and connecting with others who share their goals. APEM President Dylan Latargia, a senior from West Islip, NY, reflected on how conference attendance helped him to discover his “why.” He shared: “I want my future students to build strong relationships and leave my class with a smile on their face. I had the opportunity to explore other focuses, especially adventure education, and learned other examples of what fun in PE can look like.” Q: What advice would you give to other universities or advisors hoping to bring students in the future? A: Start by spreading awareness about the convention. If your students are unfamiliar with it, invite past attendees to share their experiences. If funding is a challenge, explore institutional support or grant opportunities to make attendance possible.

Cortland students join other convention attendees for a dance-filled Opening Celebration.
