a community worth celebrating

E

very year, when we create the Best of Chatham issue, I’m reminded that this isn’t really about awards; it’s about people.

Tens of thousands of readers cast votes for the businesses, restaurants, makers, services and community favorites they love most in our ninth annual poll. Some of this year’s winners are longtime Chatham staples, like Allen & Son Bar-B-Que, while others are recent additions that have quickly become part of our everyday lives, like the new Radio PBO station.

Together, they tell the story of a place that, while continuing to change, also retains the sense of connection that makes it special.

I experienced a little piece of that connection myself this past year at Pilates at the Core, a winner in the yoga/pilates/barre studio category. I’ll admit: Pilates was never something I thought I’d be interested in, but today, I can’t imagine my weekly routine without it. There’s the physical challenge, of course, but a big part of what keeps me coming back is the feeling of belonging to a community – of walking into a room where people have a shared goal of feeling stronger, healthier and more grounded, together.

That’s the thing I love most about Best of Chatham. Behind every winning business is a story like that: a favorite restaurant where you celebrate anniversaries and birthdays, a shop or gym where someone always remembers your name, a service provider you’ve trusted for years, a place where you’ve found friendship or simply a few minutes to yourself.

So, to everyone who voted, thank you for sharing your favorites with us. And to every business and organization recognized in these pages, thank you for giving Chatham County so many reasons to show up, shop local, gather and celebrate. cm

‘HAPPINESS’

very component of “Happiness” by artist Hamidou Sissoko has a past. From transmission gears and spark plugs to an old sawmill and a retired carbon dioxide tank, the Pittsboro artist gave these discarded materials an unexpected new life. The 8-foot-tall, 3.5-foot-wide, 400-pound sculpture is crafted from scrap metal, paint and concrete. Hamidou, who learned to weld while working as a car mechanic, has spent the past 15 years transforming salvaged metal into outdoor sculptures. “Most of my sculptures focus on nature, but ‘Happiness’ is different in that I was interested in the balance and symmetry of different metals,” he says. “I am grateful that the Town of Pittsboro selected it. Since I became an artist, I had hoped to have a sculpture in downtown Pittsboro, so it is a dream come true.” Check out “Happiness” on the corner of Hillsboro Street and East Street, near the traffic circle outside Screaming for Vintage. cm

She has put that expertise to work reshaping the county's arts programming, including launching the new Chatham County Arts Center in Pittsboro last year. Now, she looks back on her journey and shares what she has in store for the fall season.

You are originally from Newfoundland, Canada. How did your work lead you to Chatham County? While teaching abroad in South Korea, I met my then-husband, whose military assignment later brought us to Virginia. It was there that I spent more than 20 years at a visual arts center within a recreation department, where I contributed to visual arts program development, taught visual arts classes, managed a gallery, created graphic design materials for marketing and participated in special events. I was also fortunate to be involved in initial discussions during the planning and construction of a new center, where I provided input on studio requirements needed to support arts programming. This experience gave me valuable insight that helped prepare me for my current role.

Seeking a new professional challenge, I was honored to be selected to join Chatham County Parks, Recreation and Cultural Resources as the new Arts and Cultural

Program Supervisor and to work with an incredible team. The opportunity to help envision a new Arts Center for the community was an exciting challenge. Chatham County already feels like home!

How have your artwork and career goals evolved since graduating from the Nova Scotia College of Art and Design, where you studied Fine Art and Art Education?

My work as a multidisciplinary artist will always continue to grow. I intentionally avoid limiting my practice to a single medium, choosing instead to explore a wide range of materials through both two-dimensional and three-dimensional work. I particularly enjoy exploring assemblages, sculpture, drawing, mosaics and textiles. As part of my interdisciplinary approach, I often work in a series which centers on one theme. This allows for material exploration and the development of a cohesive visual narrative.

My career goals have evolved as I continue to dive deeper into arts administration and explore new programming concepts.

Developing and managing a new arts program has allowed me to expand my experience in program development, budgeting, safety management, community partnerships and managing studio operations. I especially

love collaborative programming and partnerships with other departments within the county. These include Painting & Planting with the Therapeutic Horticulture Master Gardeners of the N.C. Cooperative Extension - Chatham County Center, Bee Painting with the Certified Beekeepers of North Carolina, and Robots and Recycling with Chatham County Solid Waste and Recycling.

Did you always know you wanted to work in arts administration and programming? How did your work lead you to this job? My art education degree included three practicums in public school. I was encouraged by a professor to also explore teaching in alternative environments as well. After taking his advice, I ultimately knew that arts administration and programming was exactly where I wanted to be in my career.

What does your typical day of work look like? When do you incorporate your own artwork into your schedule?

There really isn’t a typical day of work, and that’s what I love about my job.

Upcoming Arts Center Events The Arts Center has a list of new and returning classes, and be sure to check out the Chatham County Parks, Recreation and Cultural Resources website for programs including athletics and fitness, outdoors, education and enrichment, specialized programs and events for all age groups, from early childhood, youth and teens to adults. Check out the new fall program guide online at chathamcountync.gov/parks-rec. ● The Arts Center will display the Community Indigo Quilt, an artist-guided, community-centered quilt-making experience, beginning this fall. The project brought people together to explore indigo as a shared, global heritage through hands-on making, storytelling and community connection.

Participants dyed fabric squares – one to keep and one for the community quilt – and received an indigo seedling to grow at home. They then came together at the Arts Center to piece the squares, culminating in a completed quilt that will be displayed throughout Chatham County. This project is partially funded by the Chatham Arts Council with support from Chatham County. ● The Arts Center will host artists Jody Nash (soft pastel landscapes) and Bobby Izquierdo (fine art photography) from the Chatham Artists Guild for its annual Studio Tour on Saturday, Dec. 5, 2026, 10 a.m.-5 p.m., and on Sunday, Dec. 6, 2026, noon-5 p.m.

One day I may be brainstorming new program ideas, meeting with an instructor, reviewing the arts budget and creating marketing materials for upcoming visual arts classes. The next day, I might be attending a meeting, participating in training, connecting with participants, giving someone a tour of the new Arts Center, firing a kiln and mixing glazes for class, and there is so much more.

My own artwork always works its way into the schedule when I am teaching.

If I am teaching clay hand-building, for instance by way of demonstration, I am already creating a possibility for a new piece of work.

How did your work as a mixed media artist impact the way you approach your role at the program?

My experience is essential to my work and allows me to approach programming with an understanding of both the artists’ and participants’ perspectives.

Coming from a background as an artist, I understand the value of having access to meaningful creative experiences, and I am inspired by being able to provide those opportunities for others. I also love being an example for my two children (my best artwork to date) that it is possible to pursue your passions and build a career doing work you love.

The Fearrington House Restaurant The Fearrington House Restaurant has built its reputation around refined dining with a strong sense of place for more than 45 years. Executive chef Paul Gagne’s seasonally driven menus draw from the bounty of North Carolina farms and Fearrington’s own gardens, where herbs and edible flowers grow just steps from the kitchen. Local partnerships shape the menu through regional farm-grown produce and fresh meat and seafood.

Guests can choose from three- or fourcourse prix fixe offerings, a chef’s tasting menu or a vegetarian tasting menu, all

served in an intimate setting overlooking the peaceful gardens. “Our goal is to create dishes that reflect a sense of place and purpose – honoring local farmers while surprising and delighting every guest,” Paul says. The restaurant’s commitment to seasonality, sustainability and hospitality has helped make it one the most celebrated dining destinations in Chatham County and across the state, and its accolades don’t stop there: last fall, Fearrington House was among the 47 North Carolina restaurants recognized in Michelin’s new Guide to the American South. 

The Sycamore at Chatham Mills Housed in a restored former textile mill, The Sycamore at Chatham Mills combines an elegant dining experience with the industrial character of its historic Pittsboro setting.

Executive chef Greg Lewis and his wife, Maria Parker-Lewis, opened the restaurant in 2021 with a menu that lists USDA Prime steaks alongside seasonal seafood, locally sourced produce and more unexpected items, including ostrich and duck. The menu changes regularly to take advantage of what’s fresh, with North Carolina scallops, swordfish and seasonal vegetables among current offerings. In the restaurant, live jazz and piano music fill the air several nights a week, and exposed brick, original wood floors, soaring ceilings and a peacock-inspired dining room round out the sophisticated but approachable atmosphere.

The adjacent lounge offers a more relaxed setting for cocktails and small plates amid a pool table and cozy fireplace; either way, The Sycamore offers plenty of reasons to linger.

Cafe Root Cellar

Chef and owner Sera Cuni takes a “go big or go home” approach to American cuisine, creating bold, seasonal dishes that draw on flavors from across the country. The reimagined sister restaurant to The Root Cellar Cafe in Chapel Hill, Cafe Root Cellar grew out of a series of pandemic-era pop-ups and now offers lunch, dinner and Sunday brunch at Mosaic at Chatham Park. Sera’s menus change with the seasons and emphasize locally sourced ingredients, with creative takes on familiar favorites alongside burgers, sandwiches, salads and shared plates. The dining room feels like eating at a family member’s kitchen table, with mismatched chairs, fresh flowers and an always-stocked case of pies and cakes giving guests a warm welcome.

Sera’s commitment to feeding people goes further than the restaurant: In 2023, she launched Feed-Well Fridges, a community fridge program that addresses food insecurity while helping reduce restaurant food waste in Chatham County. Her work in the kitchen and beyond has earned national attention, including appearances on Food Network and selection to the James Beard Foundation’s Chef Bootcamp for Policy and Change.

Part cocktail bar, part downtown hangout, The Beagle brings a playful personality to downtown Pittsboro. Housed in a historic space at 53 Hillsboro St., the bar sets the tone from the start with walls featuring cheeky portraits of beloved pets. Early every morning, the staff makes each one by hand, with many selling out by 2 p.m. “Our secret recipe is teamwork,” owner Jodi Hackney says. “When you love what you do, it shows up in the work.” That sense of pride extends beyond the kitchen and into the community the bakery has called home for more than a decade. Jodi says the relationships built with customers, neighbors and local businesses have given the team a sense of home and belonging that inspires them to keep improving. Breakaway Cafe

At Breakaway Cafe, the menu and atmosphere reflect some of the things that matter most to its owners, Amy Coughlin and Andy Pignatora: brunch, coffee and animals. “We love brunch food, so we make sure we use great ingredients and put them together well,” says Amy, who notes that the cafe makes “a ridiculous amount of hollandaise” each week to ensure its eggs Benedict are always on point.

(We’re partial to the Cali Benedict, which comes with fresh avocado, Aleppo pepper and perfectly crispy breakfast potatoes.) Amy and Andy’s passion for a good cup of coffee has also fostered a longtime relationship with Counter Culture Coffee, and the Durham-based beans shine in cappuccinos and cortados. And the owners’ years of fostering cats and dogs have shaped the cafe’s welcoming spirit – fourlegged friends are a regular sight on the patio. That love of animals extends to their approach to food, with a large number of meat-free options. “We empathize with humanely raised proteins, and what is more humane than vegetarian?”

Amy says. While the dishes vary slightly between the Briar Chapel and Carrboro locations, she says Breakaway remains committed to the same principles at both. 

The Mod

Beloved local pizza joint and live music venue The Mod is entering a new chapter. In August, the restaurant side closed temporarily as owner Jamie Ellen began renovations to create a more intimate dinner atmosphere in the bar, drawing on her background as an interior designer. The refresh follows a broader reinvention of The Mod, including a menu centered on organic ingredients and a welcoming, family-friendly space where everyone feels welcome. With an all-female management team and a business that is 90% female-run, The Mod also serves as a hub for the community, with a weeknight event lineup that includes shag dancing, pool and poker leagues, salsa lessons and live music on weekends. Thursday blues jams are open to all ages and have helped young local musicians, including high school performers, find a stage. The Mod also supports local nonprofits through SoCo Cares, which organizes community events and provides essentials such as Christmas gifts and school clothes to families in need. For Jamie, the renovation represents a fresh start – one that brings her creative background and vision for The Mod into its next chapter. 

Though its pizza is a must-try, The Mod is also known for its delicious salads, like the steak and bleu, which comes drizzled with balsamic reduction and a side of housemade bleu cheese vinaigrette.

Ta Contento

Bolivian native Nora Anaya moved to Chapel Hill in 2016 to work at UNC Hospitals and pursue her master’s degree in psychology and health coaching. She met Hans Vargas at a food truck she frequented on her lunch break, and the couple married in 2019.

That same year, they launched the Ta Contento food truck, featuring a contemporary twist on authentic Mexican flavors, and, in 2022, made themselves a permanent fixture in Chatham’s dining scene, opening a first brick and mortar at Cole Park Plaza next to the gas station. Last year, they expanded to a second location at The Plant.

They remain committed to sourcing fresh ingredients and serving delicious food, adapting the menu to include popular items like birria quesadillas. Shonda Tuck-Strickland’s Fancy & Frosted Cakery rises to the top in this year’s Best of Chatham desserts category

B

aking her mother’s old-fashioned caramel cake takes Shonda Tuck-Strickland right back to her childhood, standing beside her mother in the kitchen. “Some of my earliest and most cherished memories are of being in the kitchen with her, learning by her side and spending time together,” she says. “As I make it, I can almost hear her voice guiding me, telling me when the batter and icing are just right.”

Those early moments sparked a lifelong love for baking that eventually led Shonda to found Fancy & Frosted Cakery, an NCDAcertified microbakery the pastry chef-artist runs from her Siler City home kitchen, recognized in this year’s Best of Chatham poll in the best desserts/pastries category.

But Shonda never expected to become a professional baker. In March 2011, she posted a photo of the cake she’d made for her daughter’s eighth birthday to Facebook. To Shonda’s surprise, someone reached out asking if she baked for the public. “Until that moment,

“I truly believe [my mom] passed the torch to me,” Shonda says as she puts the finishing touches on a caramel cake made from her motherʼs recipe. “It is an honor to carry on the traditions she taught me.

I had never even considered turning my passion into a business,” she says. But she said yes, accepting her first order, and before long, one order became two, then three, and kept growing.

In 2021, Shonda certified her home kitchen and began selling commercially, moving beyond selling to friends and family into coffee shop partnerships, vendor events and competitions.

Fancy & Frosted’s menu ranges from classic Southern staples, like her mother’s caramel cake, to elaborate custom and wedding cakes, cupcakes and dessert tables for special events. Weddings hold particular meaning for Shonda, who loves being a small but memorable part of a couples’ celebration. But the throughline across every order is her insistence that beauty and flavor go hand in hand. “I never want a cake to just look good,” Shonda says. “I want it to be something people genuinely enjoy and remember.”

That commitment earned her recognition as the winner of Raleigh’s 2024 Dessert Wars, the largest festival of its kind in the U.S. She then advanced to the national level and placed in the top 15. “That experience was an incredible reminder of how far Fancy & Frosted has come,” she says. “Being recognized alongside

so many talented bakers gave me a sense of pride and accomplishment that I never could have imagined when I first started baking.”

When she’s not in the kitchen, Shonda treasures road trips and beach days with her family. Her husband, Donnie Strickland, their adult children, Ariyan Walden and Tyler Walden, and Shonda’s sister, Kim Tyson, owner of the I Am Cookie & Sugar Co. microbakery out of Sanford, have been her biggest supporters from the beginning.

She also stays active as a volunteer with Webb Squared and the Siler City Downtown Organization Committee, work she describes as a “love cycle,” giving back to the community that has helped her business grow.

But Shonda wants to whip up more than sweet treats. “I want every bite to remind [people] of simpler times – of spending summer days at Grandma’s house, playing outside until the sun starts to set, then coming inside to enjoy a homemade slice of cake surrounded by the people they love,” she says.

“If my desserts can bring someone back to those moments, even for just a little while, then I’ve done exactly what I set out to do.” cm

The Scott family has made fruitcake a holiday table staple for more than 40 years. It all started when Berta Lou Scott gave her homemade fruitcakes to her hairdressing clients, who loved the treats so much they encouraged her to sell them. What began in a garage eventually grew into a 30,000-square-foot facility, but Southern Supreme Fruitcake & More remains rooted in family and tradition.

Southern Supreme’s signature fruitcake stands apart thanks to generous portions of English walnuts, fresh pecans, golden raisins, dates, pineapple and candied cherries. “We hear every day, ‘It [tastes] just like my grandma used to make,’” says Lisa Scott, Berta Lou’s daughter-in-law.

Fruitcake is just the beginning. Today, the Bear Creek shop offers a multitude of goodies, from candied nuts to jams and spice mixes, chocolate turtles and an assortment of holiday gifts. Its cheese florets combine sharp cheddar and spices in a classic shape that feels right at home on an elegant appetizer spread. Fair Game Beverage Company’s Apple Brandy is made with North Carolina-grown apples purchased in Hendersonville. “That’s it,” says Fair Game owner Lyle Estill. “Just apples.”

Lyle says apple brandy was the nation’s original distilled spirit.

Before corn produced bourbon or barley made malt whiskey, early American colonists relied on apples, which grew abundantly in the New World and provided the sugar required for distilling. Many of America’s earliest cocktails, such as the old-fashioned, originally called for apple brandy – a history that inspired the Fair Game team to put their own spin on the classic spirit.

Every bottle also reflects the distillery’s commitment to using North Carolina ingredients. Because apple harvests vary from year to year, no two batches taste exactly alike. Fair Game distills a changing blend of apple varieties, then ages the spirit in used bourbon barrels. The finished product clocks in at 100 proof, showcasing the character of the fruit alongside the craft of the distilling process.

Fired Up

Mark Hewitt Pottery earned a place among this year’s best artist’s workshops, and for good reason. For more than 40 years, Mark Hewitt has transformed clay into functional works of art from his Pittsboro studio.

Mark is the definition of a global potter: He moved to North Carolina from England in 1982, built his own Japanese-style kiln and helped revive the state’s wood-fired pottery tradition.

He handcrafts large-scale vessels, plates, bowls and other pieces using local clay he digs himself, experimenting with form and glaze before firing each work in a wood-burning process in which the flames and ash leave their own mark, adding distinctive colors, textures and variations that make every creation one of a kind.

The pottery feels deeply connected to the region yet unmistakably contemporary – a reflection of Chatham County craftsmanship made to be used, admired and passed down, with a style that is unmistakably Mark’s own.

Aromatic Roasters started small – really small.

Founder Dominic Treadwell began the coffee business in a tiny orange food truck, serving espresso, Aztec mochas, chai lattes and other specialty drinks to customers around Pittsboro before establishing a brick-and-mortar home on Hillsboro Street. Aromatic Roasters next relocated to the former Pittsboro Feed parking lot, and can now be found in its permanent home at West End Emporium. Coffee lovers can settle into its cozy space and choose from singleorigin coffees sourced from around the world, including Ethiopia, Kenya, Burundi, Costa Rica and Colombia.

The roaster prioritizes high-quality, high-scoring beans purchased through direct trade and roasts them in small batches, bringing a thoughtful approach to specialty coffee to the community.

“Our Ultra Chill gummies are our most popular product, and for good reason,” says Rocky River Hemp founder Sam Brownfield.

The gummies grew out of the success of the company’s 1,200-milligram fullspectrum CBD oil. and their daughter, Elizabeth Knowlton, noticed something during the COVID-19 lockdowns: even the most stable-seeming families in their community could be fragile when it came to food security. “I realized there was a greater need than was apparent,” Jennie says. Elizabeth, who had been volunteering at a donation-supported community cafe in Boone while attending Appalachian State University, encouraged her family to start one of their own in Chatham County, and the The Quiltmaker Cafe was founded in early 2021.

After five years of serving the community through mobile pop-up events, the nonprofit cafe – led by Jennie along with board members Jean MacDonald, Tonya Maness, Erica Singleton, Denise Carman and Marilyn Moore – opened a permanent home at 75 W. Salisbury St. in Pittsboro this past May. The counter-service cafe serves up hot deli sandwiches, cold cuts, soup, salad, brunch

items like frittatas and waffles, and desserts made in-house and by Carolina Cravings Co. The one thing missing from the menu? Prices.

Instead, guests can contribute financially, donate produce or eggs or volunteer their time before or after their meal. Volunteers run food to the tables, prepare and serve coffee, tea and other beverages, bus tables and wash dishes.

The cafe joins roughly 35 other pay-whatyou-can community cafes across the U.S., including two others in North Carolina: A Place at the Table in Raleigh and F.A.R.M. Cafe in Boone. Their shared mission – providing community and healthy meals to all, regardless of ability to pay – is especially relevant in Chatham County, where one in eight residents faced food insecurity in recent years and onethird of the county’s students qualify for free or reduced lunch.

Jennie says a permanent home for the cafe not only allows them to serve more meals, but also offers greater inclusion, safety and a space to build deeper community involvement.

“I think my favorite moment was during one afternoon when just about every seat was full, a

guest was playing our donated piano, teenagers were at the back table crocheting and crafting, board games were being played at three different tables,” she says. “The laughter and smiles took my breath away.”

Jennie recently became Chatham County’s recipient of the Governor’s Medallion Award for Volunteer Service, an honor she hopes will attract more guests, volunteers and donors to the cafe. The Quiltmaker Cafe is open Sunday, Monday, Tuesday, Friday and Saturday from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m.

“Food insecurity is experienced much more in this community than we realize,” Jennie says. “[But] many guests seek community at the cafe, whether or not they are food insecure.”

Chef Arlena Strode often noticed the same gap in each community she lived in while traveling for her husband’s military career: a lack of hands-on activities for kids. She taught cooking classes on military bases overseas and, when stationed stateside, at community centers and YMCAs. When she settled in Pittsboro in 2023, she started teaching at the Chatham Grove Community Center, adjacent to Chatham Grove Elementary, and saw an opportunity to give children a tangible way to practice the math, science, history and geography they were learning in school. “Kids are professional students and are so excited to be in the kitchen,” she says. “Cooking is such a joy, and when you can share it with young inquisitive minds, it is even more fun!”

She opened Children’s Culinary Institute Pittsboro at 88 West St. in downtown Pittsboro in December 2025, offering weekly classes for kids ages 18 months to 18 years, covering everything from cookies and pastries to pizza, pasta, soup, pancakes, pierogies, chutneys and more. Beyond weekly sessions, CCIP runs fun themed camps during school breaks, full-day clinics on teacher workdays, monthly “Super

Saturday” multi-age classes, teen Friday night cooking parties, parent-and-me classes and even the occasional adult class, like sourdough baking. Kids can also celebrate birthdays with a group cooking class – and even set the menu.

One of Chef Arlena’s favorite parts of teaching is watching kids learn the science behind everyday ingredients, like yeast, and try new foods they were initially unsure about.

“Ninety-eight percent of the time they decide that it is not as bad as they expected,” she says.

“In fact, they might like it!”

More than recipes, Chef Arlena hopes students leave with real-world confidence – the kind that shows up at home, in family responsibilities and even back in the classroom, when they recognize fractions or science vocabulary from something they made in her kitchen. “I love that they are able to make a full-circle learning experience,” she says. And, in a world short on screen-free time, cooking can help build self-assurance, planning and organizational skills in kids of every age. “When we learn with all five senses, we have a longer-lasting, more complete understanding.” she says. 

Jose Batista relocated from Miami to

North Carolina with his family in 2019 to follow his real estate career. But when his childhood best friend, David Perez, opened Mortalis Jiu Jitsu in Miami in 2021, Jose trained there – and recognized a need for the same kind of

kimono, no-gi jiu-jitsu relies on rash guards, shorts and direct body grips instead of fabric grabs, making for a faster, more athletic style with roots in wrestling.

Mortalis offers classes for kids and adults, and while the gym boasts a strong competitive team, competing is never required. The focus, Jose says, is building confidence, mental resilience and real-world self-defense in a safe, supportive setting – an aim Brazilian jiu-jitsu is uniquely suited to, thanks to its emphasis on leverage and technique over brute strength. The practice implements a ground-based grappling system that allows a smaller, less powerful person to successfully defend against a larger opponent, which Jose credits for the sport’s

growing popularity across the Triangle as more people seek practical self-defense skills.

One example of that is when a Mortalis student faced escalating bullying at school that turned physical. She remained calm, brought the other child to the ground and safely controlled the situation until staff arrived – with no punches thrown and no one hurt. For Jose, it’s proof of the gym’s four pillars – confidence, respect, discipline and self-defense – in practice.

But Mortalis, he says, is about more than technique. “Real, lasting friendships have formed here, not just among the kids, but among parents as well,” he says. “It’s very common to see our families spending time together outside the academy, and that tight-knit environment is truly the heart of what we do.”

Tikka Masala Indian Grill opened its first brick-and-mortar at 440 East St. in Pittsboro, following the

original food truck’s success in Apex.

The restaurant opened for takeout in November 2025 and added dine-in service in January 2026, dishing out flavors from both South and North India – think chicken tikka masala, fresh-baked naan and fragrant biryani, as well as halal options and live dosa, kebab and chaat stations.

Radio PBO hit the airwaves on Valentine’s

Day 2026 – a fitting launch for a station built on love for Chatham County. Husband-andwife team Chris O’Brien and Anna O’Brien own and run the internet station through their business, Circle City Music Company LLC, bringing more than four decades of broadcasting chops, much of it in major markets, back to their own backyard. “We believe in shopping local, living local and growing local,” Chris says. “That belief is at the heart of Radio PBO.” The station currently broadcasts out of Chris’ professional voice-over studio – which means Radio PBO sounded polished from the very first note – while Chris and Anna scout the county for a spot to plant a more public

studio flag. Musically, Radio PBO features classic rock through-and-through: the ’70s, ’80s and ’90s take center stage, anchored by weekday programs like “O’Brien in the Morning” and “The Classic Cafe” at noon.

The lineup rounds out with weekend flavor, too, from “Blues for Breakfast” and “The Jazz Brunch With Marcus Reed” to late-night jazz and easy listening on “Chill Until Dawn” and a weekly countdown of the top 10 rock songs from a single year in music history.

Beyond the music, Radio PBO is meant to reflect the county it serves, covering local events, nonprofits fundraisers, small businesses, weather and the everyday people who make life in Chatham go ’round. That spirit carries over into advertising, too. Chris

The station recently launched an app for iPhone and Android, and it’s just an “Alexa, play Radio PBO” away on smart speakers.

Still, for Chris, nothing beats the moment a stranger stopped him at a local event and said, “We love the station, and this community really needed this.”

first came to NC Spine & Sports in February 2026 because I was experiencing significant lower back pain, frequent headaches and a lot of inflammation.

y husband and I moved to Fearrington Village in 2020 and joined Duke Center for Living in 2021 after visiting the facility and seeing all that it had to offer. Being so close to the house made it easy to go to classes and work with a trainer. Coming out of COVID isolation, the physical activity was great and I felt stronger and better overall. My life changed dramatically in March 2024 when [I was] diagnosed with Parkinson’s disease. While obviously a shock, I followed my neurologist’s advice to not only take new medications, but engage more physically as exercise is the single best thing to build strength and slow the effects of PD. It turns out one of the best activities for people with PD is boxing, and DCFL offered a “Punching Parkinson’s” package, which I began immediately.

I was not only challenging myself physically, but meeting others dealing with PD who have become friends and a support group.

I am in the best shape of my life and feeling stronger with greater confidence and capacity for everyday life and active vacations. While PD often brings fatigue, I have greater energy to deal with it. I’m up at 5:30 a.m. to go to “Strong and Limber” classes four times a week in addition to boxing twice a week.

The staff is remarkable. They are in tune with the needs of older adults and strive to meet members’ personal goals. Member services staff greet people as they walk through the entrance doors and help each member with questions, ensuring a positive experience. The fitness staff are highly qualified with undergraduate or graduate degrees in exercise physiology [and] are skillful in leading classes and working one-onone. Altogether the staff provides a positive vibe, creating a great atmosphere for members.

Come in and take a tour to [see] what I’ve been talking about in terms of atmosphere, staff and facilities – it is unlike any other fitness center that I’ve belonged to in the past. In addition to the great exercise and its personal impact, I have found a community and made many friends. I joined this team as a volunteer because I believe in what we are doing and I wanted to give back as a member of the DCFL team. It has given me purpose in addition to helping me battle PD with the resolve to maintain a positive attitude and be a role model for my children, grandchildren and others.

had been interested but “too busy” to try Pilates for over a decade. A dear friend recommended finding a studio that taught classical pilates, and in early 2025, Pilates at the Core opened in Pittsboro. The location was perfect, and as a recent empty nester, I was finally ready to spend some time on new activities for just me.

I lead an active lifestyle, regularly participate in different [races] and [completed] my first half marathon in 2024. A month into practicing [Pilates] two to three times a week, I was blown away by my improved mobility. Simple daily activities like getting in and out of bed, the car, everything I did in daily life was easier.

What sets this [studio] apart is the sense of community – PATC includes a vibrant community of men and women from all stages of life. The instructors are all certified in Pilates and care about your wellbeing. The class sizes are small and safety comes first.

PATC hosts regular communitybuilding activities, from a walking group to a holiday cookie exchange, a sip-and-paint outing and a boating event on Jordan Lake. This has been an unexpected delight getting to know the instructors and fellow members.

I enjoy learning about Pilates, and the instructors’ recommended books. There is an extensive library right at the studio. I am so fascinated by how Pilates improves your body-mind connection that I enrolled in teacher training in March of this year. My advice [to anyone considering Pilates] is to go for it – you have nothing to lose and great health and longevity to gain. My only regret is not starting sooner.

Live on the Lawn

M

has become a go-to destination for dining, wellness and entertainment. The Philip H. Kohl Mosaic Family Commons invites families to bring lawn chairs or spread out their blankets for an evening of free live music or an outdoor movie throughout the summer and into the fall. This season began in April with the Friday Beach Music Series, the perfect outing to get in a vacation mood, with coastal vibes and a new band every week – including a performance by the Northwood High School marching band.

“It just feels good to know that people love coming to our community and enjoying all that we have, and supporting the local arts too,” says Savannah Fox, events and commercial assistant property manager at Mosaic. The fall brings another opportunity to jam out with themed concerts. This year’s Blast from the Past series features a nostalgic decade-spanning lineup held first and third Fridays through Oct. 16. If you’re motivated to get up and do the moonwalk, or maybe the 1, 2 step, Mosaic recently added a dance floor to the lawn.

Other events include the Moonlight Movie Series, a family-friendly drive-in style movie experience; Mosaic Market, a collection of crafts, fresh produce, baked goods and restaurant fare from local vendors on select Saturdays; Wellness Wednesdays, a chance to get active with instructor-led workout classes; and the Merry + Bright Christmas Drone Light Show and holiday market in December.

Beginning this fall, Mosaic plans to offer a VIP tent experience, available to rent during large events. The space will provide premium seating for about 30 people to gather for birthday parties, reunions and other get-togethers.

A Creative Escape

ucked away down a wooded drive just 2 miles from downtown Pittsboro, The Plant is perfect for a day of shopping, an evening of live music or even a wedding. More than 20 small businesses call the cozy 17-acre campus home – from local brewers like BMC Brewing and a variety of Central American and Caribbean fare to a trio of hemp-powered stores, a gallery curated by the Chatham Artists Guild and an axe-throwing studio.

“It’s very pedestrian, and so it’s a really safe place if your babies and children and dogs are running wild and there’s a ton of different places

to hang out as a group,” Tami Schwerin, cofounder of The Plant, says. Spaces spread across the grounds – including Little Pond Gardens, a gazebo and the Tree Museum – are available to rent for weddings, baby showers, birthday parties and much more. “There’s different little nooks and crannies to hang out in,” Tami adds.

Play a game of giant chess, keep an eye out for a purple martin or a wood duck on an easy hike around the campus or check the calendar for live music. The Wheelhouse at Fair Game Beverage Company transforms into an intimate listening room for ticketed shows featuring local and touring artists alike, or enjoy a free outdoor show. Seasonal festivals like the Okra Jamboree in August or Pepperfest and Mead Fest in September provide even more opportunities to explore local vendors. 

The iconic Belted Galloway cows greet passersby as they make their way into the village center. The Belted Goat serves up breakfast staples and a variety of sandwiches, soups and salads for lunch, prepared with local ingredients.

For something lighter, The Fearrington House Restaurant serves an afternoon tea with seasonal sweet and savory bites – reservations are required. In the evening, Galloway’s Wine Bar & Shop serves wine by the glass, plus local craft beer, seasonal cocktails and small plates.

In addition to the rolling pastures where the cows, goats and other barnyard animals reside, Fearrington is dotted with picturesque flower gardens and adjoined by Jenny’s Park, a 17-acre

natural area with two ponds, a winding walking path and a wildflower meadow where visitors can take a weekend stroll – or even get married!

Fearrington offers all-inclusive weddings with ceremony spaces around the grounds.

Receptions (or birthdays, anniversaries, showers and other momentous gatherings) can move inside to The Barn, a large rustic-but-modern venue; the Garden Terrace, a year-round open-air pavilion surrounded by gardens; The Cottage at The Fearrington House Inn, an intimate venue nestled beneath the pecan trees; or The Fearrington House Restaurant itself.

“The versatility of our spaces is remarkable – we’ve had such fun taking someone’s vision and customizing the spaces to make it a reality,” social media manager Emma Zunker says.

“We’ve hosted so many different kinds of weddings in our Barn, for example, from highly sophisticated affairs with mirror balls and a classic black and white dance floor to more garden-inspired, with greenery draped from the ceilings and floral centerpieces on the tables.”

For residents, Fearrington Village offers a variety of amenities: The Gathering Place, a central hub where clubs, workshops and other social gatherings are hosted; the Swim and Croquet Club; the Fearrington Farmer’s Market; miles of walking trails; and, of course, shopping and dining.

arolina Tiger Rescue is

home to 13 species of animals – including tigers, lions, red wolves and porcupines – rescued from dire situations and housed in large, naturalistic habits.

Located right in Pittsboro’s backyard, CTR offers a variety of tours that will entertain the entire family. General guided tours teach visitors about each animal and the conservation challenges wild cats face, while special enrichment tours offer insight into the activities that the caretakers encourage to promote natural behaviors in the animals. 

ogs, goats and, of course, alpacas – 34 to be exact – await visitors at Carolina Sunshine Alpaca Farm, located off U.S. Highway 64 between Pittsboro and Siler City.

PacaVisits offer an opportunity to walk the farm lanes, feed and pet the animals and strike up a yard game, all at your own pace. The farm welcomes guests year round to bring a chair and their favorite pastime and spend a few hours relaxing among the animals.

For a guided experience, PacaTours are staff-led walkthroughs where you’ll feed the alpacas while you learn about their history, care and what the farm crafts with their wool. The farm hosts special events throughout the year, like National Alpaca Farm Day in late September, as well as educational camps and yoga classes. Celebrate birthdays and special events in the rentable open-air barn and field, where kids can throw a frisbee or play a game of kickball before visiting with the farm animals.

For an insider’s look at the rescue, after-hours twilight tours are available April through October, and monthly Tiger Tales tours give children ages 2-7 the chance to create animal-themed crafts and learn about the sanctuary’s residents. “Guests also learn how Carolina Tiger Rescue advocates for stronger protections for wild animals in captivity and in the wild,” says Marketing and Communications Director Nick Keller, “and how their everyday choices can make a meaningful difference for wildlife.”

A Storied Venue

L

ocals began the Bynum Music Series on the front porch of what was then the Bynum General Store in 2001; the intimate Bynum Front Porch has been a weekly destination for people of all ages to enjoy free musical performances ever since. During the summer months, folding chairs and twinkling lights frame the stage for the Friday night concerts. From September through April, when temperatures dip, performances move indoors for the Mill Town Yarns series inside the store.

Local and professional storytellers and singer-songwriters share their talents in the monthly lineup, which N.C. Storytellers Guild recognizes as one of the state’s premier storytelling hubs. Artists of all ages and skill levels can share in the music-making with acoustic Bluegrass Circle Jams every second and fourth Saturday year round.

“Our series is in its 25th season,” says Bynum Front Porch board chair Ron Hatley.

“Everyone enjoys our inviting atmosphere, outside if the weather is perfect, and inside if there are threats of rain.” The cost to attend is free, but hats are passed for the band, and donations and proceeds from concession sales go to area students and schools. “Bynum Front Porch has donated $60,000 since its inception,” Ron says. “Everyone enjoys the friendly evenings beneath the Bynum skies.

hatham County Partnership for Children’s mission is built around

a simple idea: When families have what they need to thrive, children do too. The organization connects Chatham families with resources, supports early childhood educators and develops programs in response to the needs it sees in the community.

That responsive approach is at the heart of ChAMPS, which stands for Chatham’s Assistance for Maternal and Pediatric Supplies.

The program is the brainchild of family

outreach coordinator Steffanny Dubon, who recognized a growing call for essential items among families the Partnership serves.

“Steffanny came to me last year with the idea for a diaper bank,” says Heather St.Clair, executive director. “The need was there.”

The program provides diapers to families without requiring them to qualify based on income or other criteria. The approach is intentional: Families can receive a basic necessity without having to jump through hoops to prove that they need it. 

A Need, Answered

Since its launch, ChAMPS has quickly become a community-supported resource. Families have reached out for assistance, and local businesses and individuals have organized diaper drives to keep the shelves stocked.

“From the moment we opened ChAMPS, families have been reaching out for help,” says Sheen Klaus, research and development director. “And, people in the community want to support it.”

Dignity is central to the program. The Partnership accepts only new, unopened diapers and aims to provide high-quality supplies to families without judgment.

“We believe that just because a family is in need does not mean they should receive subpar services,” Sheen says. The experience of walking into ChAMPS is intentionally welcoming: the office includes a play area for kids, and Steffanny curates a shopping experience for each family so they feel welcome. With materials donated

by Bold Construction, the team created custom display shelves that give the space a welcoming, retail-like feel.

And the relationship doesn’t necessarily end when a family picks up a package of diapers.

Staff members try to connect with families and learn more about what they may need, from food assistance to childcare resources.

“We want to be a one-stop resource for families,” Heather says. “If a family comes for diapers, we want to ensure they leave with the support they truly need.”

The team also hosts distribution events throughout the community for those who are not able to make it to the office. “People line up,” Steffanny says. “It’s amazing to see the impact.”

Beyond ChAMPS ChAMPS is one piece of a much larger effort to support Chatham families from a child’s earliest years through the transition to school.

The Partnership helps families sign up for Dolly Parton’s Imagination Library, which sends a free book each month to participating children until they turn 5.

Free facilitated playgroups known as Kaleidoscope Play and Learn sessions give families opportunities to engage in developmentally appropriate activities while building connections with other parents and caregivers.

Other Partnership programs focus on the systems and environments surrounding young children. The Lena Grow program, for example, uses conversational tracking devices to help educators better understand the quality and frequency of interactions they have with their students. The goal is to encourage more “serve and return” conversations, which are important to language development and cognitive growth. Educators can use the resulting information to adjust their interactions and better support children in their classrooms.

Through the Child and Adult Care Food Program, the Partnership also helps childcare providers offset the cost of meals that meet nutritional guidelines, supporting both providers and the families they serve.

Together, the programs reflect a broad view of what it takes to give children a strong start: access to basic necessities, opportunities for learning, healthy relationships and quality childcare.

Building Stronger Starts

That last piece – childcare – remains one of the community’s most significant challenges.

As Chatham County grows, so does the demand for affordable, accessible childcare. The Partnership is working with community colleges and other partners to encourage more people to consider early childhood education as an occupation.

“Childcare is a significant issue,” Heather says. “We’re working to create pathways for more providers to enter the field. It’s about building a sustainable future for our children.”

The Partnership’s ability to adapt is central to its approach. Rather than offering a fixed list of services, it works with families and community partners to identify emerging needs and determine where it can make the greatest difference.

That flexibility is also what has helped ChAMPS evolve from an idea into a growing community-supported program in a short time.

The Partnership provides

the infrastructure, but families, businesses, volunteers and local organizations all play a role in keeping the effort moving.

A perennial to fall for

Lessons

hatham County is located in USDA Plant Hardiness Zone 8a, which enters one of the best planting windows of the year as summer’s heat finally breaks. With mild winters and first frost typically arriving in mid-to-late November, fall is an ideal time to establish perennials, shrubs and even some vegetables before the ground cools completely. Soil temperatures stay warm well into autumn, too, encouraging root growth even as air temperatures drop.

Plants installed now will spend the cooler months developing strong root systems instead of struggling through summer stress, giving them a significant head start come spring. The black-eyed Susan (Rudbeckia hirta) is an excellent choice for our fall gardens. This cheerful native perennial thrives in the region’s climate and is remarkably low-maintenance. Its beautiful golden-yellow petals and dark center are a magnet for bees, butterflies and moths, and the abundant nectar and pollen

keep many native species well fed during migration season.

Pair black-eyed Susans with other fall-friendly perennials like purple coneflower, autumn sage, and ornamental grasses such as muhly grass. These combinations create pollinator-friendly beds that will burst into color by late spring and summer.

Cool-season vegetables also thrive when planted now: kale, collards, lettuce and garlic all do well in Zone 8a’s mild fall and winter temperatures.

Mulch new plantings 2 to 3 inches deep to regulate soil temperature and retain moisture. Water deeply but less frequently than summer plantings require. With minimal effort now, gardeners can look forward to a vibrant, wellestablished landscape when spring arrives. cm

isa Reynolds was finishing her studies

in UNC’s physical therapy program in the mid-1980s when she first visited her future home. “The head PT I studied under lived here for a short time, and I came over for dinner,” she says. “I walked through the door, and it never left my mind.”

The 1983-built house captivated her thanks to its idyllic location and contemporary feel.

When it came on the market a few years later, her husband, David Simmons, was on board.

“We got lucky and were able to buy it,” Dave says. “Best decision we ever made.”

Lisa quickly envisioned ways to make the spacious home feel warmer and more personal.

“She saw we needed to add some color and texture and soul to this place,” Dave says.

A few years later, the couple decided the space was too good to keep to themselves.

They began welcoming guests to their home as the Bed & Breakfast at Laurel Ridge. “We came up with the name because we’re near a high bluff overlooking the Rocky River, and there is a huge naturally occurring stand of mountain laurel,” Dave says.

Along the way, Lisa continued to thoughtfully refresh the guest rooms and common spaces. “We have friends who visit from bigger cities and are in awe of how decompressed they feel,” he adds.  The owner’s bath features decorative drawer pulls sourced from laurel branches found on the property.

The couple closed the bed-andbreakfast in 2011, deciding to retire and reclaimed the house as their own. “We didn’t buy a retirement home in Florida,” Dave says. “We created our dream retirement home right here.”

They began on the first floor, tackling some of the needed work themselves.

“The kitchen was worn out after so many years of hosting, so we put a lot of effort into that,” Dave says. Next, one of the home’s many bathrooms was converted into a practical laundry room.

They turned their attention upstairs and realized the next chapter for the home would require a fresh perspective.

A mutual friend introduced the couple to interior designer Ashlie Campbell of An Acquired Style, and they began working together in 2024. 

“I let them show me who they were,” Ashlie says. “I asked a lot of questions about how they live their lives.”

“That’s what was so different about Ashlie,” Lisa says. “She didn’t bring in her paint chips or books. She said, ‘Show me around.’ It was like we were being reacquainted with a friend you hadn’t seen since high school. She truly understood who we are as a family and how we use the house before she ever started designing it.” 

Ashlie is careful to note that the project was never about changing the house’s character. “Dave’s a chef, Lisa’s a gardener,” she says. “This is a farm, and there are always people coming and going; friends, dogs, horses, kids. It’s robust with life, and I wanted the house to flow with the way they live.”

That philosophy shaped nearly every decision. A once-cramped front entrance became an airy set of double doors with operable windows and screens, creating a direct line of fresh air from the front of the house to the new screened porch overlooking the river. celebrated it – even incorporating the original beams into the shower itself. “We gave our electrician a lot to think about,” Lisa laughs.

Throughout the renovation, local craftsmanship remained a priority. Handmade vessel sinks created decades earlier by family friend Joyce Bryan of Stone Crow Pottery found new life in the bathroom, while cabinetry and custom hardware were crafted from mountain laurel harvested on the property.

Elsewhere in the home, fallen oak trees that once stood outside the front door were milled, dried and transformed into the family’s dining table. Existing furniture was reupholstered instead of replaced, treasured travel mementos remained on display and collected pieces continued telling the story of a life well lived.

“This isn’t a showroom,” Ashlie says. “It’s full of memories.”

Perhaps no addition has changed daily life more than the screened porch. Built where an underused deck once stood, it has become the couple’s favorite place to begin and end each day.

“When the weather is nice, we eat almost every meal out there,” Dave says. “It has transformed our everyday life.”

For Ashlie, that’s the measure of a successful renovation.

“They have loved and nurtured this house for all this time,” she says. “It takes time to let your house tell the story. You don’t know how you’re going to live in a home until you’ve walked from the kitchen to your coffee spot for days, weeks and months.”

Dave agrees. “When I was younger, my brother taught me about saving for retirement,” he says. “You invest a little over time, and one day you look back and realize what you’ve built. The same thing has happened with this house. When we first bought it, you wouldn’t recognize it today. It didn’t happen overnight.” cm

BUILT to Serve Brian Rice founded Skyline Exterior Group with a commitment to helping veterans, first responders and Gold Star families

B

efore Skyline Exterior Group completed a single paying job, Brian Rice had already given away a roof.

That decision set the tone for the Pittsboro-based business. Brian, a U.S. Air Force veteran who served from 1992 to 2003, launched Skyline less than a year ago and already the company has earned a spot among Chatham Magazine readers’ favorite home maintenance and repair businesses, but its goals extend far beyond notoriety and accolades: They begin with a commitment to serving others.

resident Grady Bendel, a Purple Heart recipient and single father who lost his leg while serving in Afghanistan.

“We did a big cookout and invited the neighborhood,” Brian says. “It was a fantastic day.” The project eventually drew attention from local news outlets, but for Brian, the significance was simply in that he had the opportunity to help a fellow veteran in a meaningful way.

That experience inspired Skyline’s 100 Roof Pledge: For every 100 paid roof installations, the company donates a complete roof system – backed by the same quality warranty provided to paying customers – to a veteran, first responder or Gold Star family in need.

Skyline identifies recipients through Veterans Bridge Home, a Charlotte-based nonprofit that connects veterans and their families with resources ranging from employment and housing to healthcare and community support. The organization vets the families, allowing Brian and his team to focus on what they do best: putting a safe, reliable roof over someone’s head.

The pledge represents far more than a charitable initiative – it is core to Brian’s reason for founding Skyline in the first place. “Giving back keeps me grounded in why I started this company,” he says. “It’s easy in this business to get caught up in numbers and growth.”

who served this country,” he says, “I’m reminded that Skyline isn’t really just in the roofing business. We’re in the taking-care-ofpeople business.”

That relationship-first mindset comes naturally to Brian. His years in the Air Force forged friendships that have lasted across decades and continents. “Those folks are people you will always have in your life,” he says.

Brian has carried that same sense of connection into his work at Skyline. He credits the Chatham County Chamber of Commerce, local networking groups and community leaders who encourage residents to shop locally with helping the young company gain a foothold. After all, there is a direct link between supporting Skyline and helping it fulfill its pledge: The business has to sell roofs to give them away.

For all the growth and obstacles that come with running a small business, Brian says the recurring lesson is the importance of staying engaged and invested – with customers, neighbors, fellow business owners and the community.

“That is what it’s all about,” he says.

“Challenges will always come with every new business, or even one that has been in operation for a while. We are lucky here in Chatham County to be able to work through them together.”

This year the Chatham Success Network is supporting 24 households, 113 individuals, through 9 coordinated partners. Every week, the Chatham Housing Collective brings 9 organizations to the same table to tackle housing instability with shared data and a common plan aligned with Chatham County Government goals.

On July 15, Chatham County’s Geographic Information Systems Department Director Nick Haffele accepted Esri’s

Special Achievement in GIS Award at the 2026 Esri User Conference in San Diego, California. The award recognizes organizations around the world for innovation and leadership in GIS. The honor highlights Chatham County’s use of ArcGIS Indoors for IT asset management.

The project brought detailed indoor maps to 11 county buildings while helping staff manage room reservations and employee workspaces. It also made it easier to track critical safety equipment, including AEDs and fire extinguishers, and incorporated drone-generated 3D models to give staff a more detailed view of county facilities.

The county is now an Esri reference site, welcoming organizations from across the country to learn from its approach and share ideas for using GIS technology in facility management. cm 138

eight months of renovations. The revamped space at 112 Village Lake Rd. features a new welcome center, multiuse space, office suite for staff and waiting area and information hub, plus new flooring which can be customized for fitness classes, social gatherings and special events.

The owners of Compadres closed its location at 193 Lowes Dr., Ste. 107 and announced that the space would reopen with a fresh concept, although no official date was set. The Siler City location is still operating as usual.

The Quiltmaker Cafe, a nonprofit, pay-what-

you-can counter-service restaurant, opened its doors in early May at 75 West Salisbury St. in Pittsboro. The menu features classic sandwiches, deli staples, soups, brunch options and more.

Yoga Garden closed its studio on East Street in Pittsboro in May. Former Yoga Garden instructor Meadow Defosche opened her own studio, Pittsboro Yoga, at The Plant. Yoga Garden owner Lexie Wolf and her partner, Bill Wofford, started a new practice, Soma Yoga, which regularly offers classes at venues including Chatham Mills Studio and Pittsboro Yoga.

Aromatic Roasters found a new brick-andmortar home inside the refreshed West End Emporium at 23 Rectory Street. The

ason Belch and Erica Singleton met

through mutual friends, and what began as easy conversation soon grew into something more. “We both value hard work, giving back to our community and building something meaningful together,” Erica says The pair had been together for nearly four years when Mason proposed in December 2025 during a sunset walk on a pier in Aruba. Erica had been anticipating a proposal, but didn’t expect it to happen on their trip. “What I did not know was that he had the ring in his shirt pocket the entire day,” she says. “Out of the box. For six hours. I still cannot believe he pulled that off without losing it.”

Mason and Erica married in a secret ceremony at the Chatham County Courthouse March 26, 2026. They expected only their mothers, Darlene Singleton and Patricia Wood, to witness their nuptials, but arrived to find friends Jean MacDonald, Claire Coffey and her daughter, Jillian Coffey – who served as the flower girl – Tonya Maness, Amanda Fay Mullins, and Cheryl Littleton waiting with bubble guns. The celebration continued with dinner at Aye! Toro, and a few weeks later, friends surprised Erica again with a party at Ta Contento and cupcakes from The Phoenix Bakery.

Erica works as the director of sales for Skyline Exterior Group, and Mason is an engine assembly technician with GE Aerospace in Durham. The couple resides in Chatham County. cm
