anuary is the per fect time and provides the per fect excuse to get out and try something new … particularly when so many activities, groups, clubs, classes, concerts and lectures surround you as a resident of Shannondell.

Our fitness gurus Michelle and Stacy remind you that there’s nothing more comforting than swimming, walking or taking a class in 88-degree water when the snow’s flying outside. From Water Walking to Hydro-Pilates, your choices are many. Likewise, our group leaders invite you to join them for camaraderie and laughs as they socialize and learn together. The Book Discussion Group begins Caleb’s Crossing by Geraldine Brooks in January and the Non-Fiction Book Club turns the page on Rage and Rebellion Across the Islamic World by Robin Wright.

Fitness & Wellness T

he latest fitness craze at Shannondell can be summed up in one word – Z-u-m-b-a!

If you haven’t witnessed this Latininspired, cardio-fitness class that takes place in the clubhouse living rooms, you’re missing out. In just 45 minutes, these residents burn as many as 800 calories. What’s more, it’s a blast. Just ask anyone who’s joined a class. The music keeps you moving and your classmates keep you smiling. Try a class on Tuesday or Wednesday.

New in January: Men’s Max Muscle on Monday mornings and Chair Fitness on Monday afternoons. Also – personal Fitness Evaluations on Thursday afternoons – the perfect way to add something new in your normal workout.

(Ashcroft Movie Theater) While CEO of America, President Clinton enjoyed a booming economy, yet if his impeachment trial had gone differently, he would not have finished his second term. Join us for an intriguing discussion of this most controversial former U.S. President.

Two of the greatest lyricists — Lorenz Hart and Johnnie Mercer — helped to define the period in which American popular music found its groove. This 3-part series tells the story of poetry and passion of the great Bards of Broadway and their own brand of American spirit. Maestro Karl Middleman, founder and artistic director of the Philadelphia Classical Symphony, uses film and audio clips and live demonstrations to recreate this era of unforgettable memories.

(Ashcroft Movie Theater) A distinguished sport columnist for more than 50 years, Mr. Isaacs has written for Newsday and Sports Illustrated, among other publications.

Today, his column appears on the site www.thecolumnists.com. Join Stanley as he recalls sporting events covered including the World Series, Super Bowl, Wimbledon, and more.

Amusing anecdotes are sure to entertain.

Always a favorite of residents, Philadelphia Orchestra Concertmaster David Kim returns in January. In February, be sure to see Kazuo Tokito and Hirono Oka as they join Jeffrey on stage.

Baritone Markus Beam arrives in March for an evening of opera and arias. The Shannondell Actors’ Studio returns with an all-new Radio Revue and the King of Prussia Players present the comic operetta The Pirates of Penzance starting March 2.

Jeffrey Uhlig, Artistic Director & Pianist Broadway & Concert Series Jeffrey Uhlig has performed with many outstanding singers and instrumentalists including members of The Philadelphia Orchestra, The New York Philharmonic and The Metropolitan Opera. He plays regularly with The Philadelphia Orchestra Concertmaster David Kim, Principal Cellist, Hai-Ye Ni and Principal Trombonist, Nitzan Haroz. Mr. Uhlig studied piano with William Masselos and Gaby Casadesus and studied art song literature with Dalton Baldwin. He received a Master of Music Degree from West Chester University.

These talented singers perform songs made famous by famous characters.

Alex Bechtel Alex is a Philadelphia-based actor, writer, and musician. Mr. Bechtel has had the pleasure of performing with a number of Philadelphia theaters and artists, including 1812 Productions, The Walnut Street Theatre, Act II Playhouse, Theatre Horizon and New Paradise Laboratories. Recent credits include This is the Week That Is, The Musical of Musicals: The Musical!, Here’s Tony and First Impressions, and Honk!.

Mr. Bechtel works as a pianist/vocal coach/teaching-artist for The University of the Arts, Walnut Street Theatre, The Wilma Theatre, and The Arden Theatre.

John Jarboe A recent graduate of the University of Michigan, Mr. Jarboe has been seen on several Philadelphia stages including the Baker in The Selkie Project, Bernard in Certain Old Clothes at Nice People Theatre Company , Simon in Passing By,and Jason in the PGLTF production of BARE: The Pop Opera. He also recently appeared in both Showboat and The Wizard of Oz at The Media Theater. Previous professional credits include The Michigan Shakespeare Festival as Lysander in A Midsummer Night’s Dream and Rosencrantz in Hamlet.

Performing across the U.S., Canada and Europe, Ilona’s styles range from Musical Theater to Opera to Jazz. Last seen on the National Tour of CATS as Jellylorum/Griddlebone, Ilona has also appeared opposite Robert Cuccioli in Showboat and as Julie in Les Miserables at the Walnut Street Theater. Also she performed at Carnegie Hall and the Merkin Theater in New York, playing the roles of Mimi in La Boheme and Lauretta in Gianni Schicchi.

Ilona attended the University of the Arts in Philadelphia.

John Anker Bow As director of Educational Outreach at Surflight Theatre, John launched the very successful educational touring company Surflight To-Go — now in its 9th season. John has also recently performed with the Nebraska Theatre Caravan, The Boothbay Opera House, The Palace Theatre of New Hampshire and Ocean City Theatre Company. The author and lyricist of several musical plays for young audiences, John also teaches in New Jersey and Pennsylvania, does voice-over work for Little Fox Productions and is an adjudicator for the Papermill Playhouse Rising Star Awards.

Chloé Moore sings the songs of Edith Piaf and Broadway in an evening of delightful music.

Chloé Moore Soprano Chloé Moore is described as “touching and radiant in personality and voice”. Currently a Resident Artist at the Academy of Vocal Arts, Chloé has performed in Arabella, Don Giovanni, the World Premiere of Garwood’s The Scarlet Letter, and Suor Angelica.

Upcoming Academy roles include Antonia and Stella in Les contes d’Hoffmann, and Adina in L’elisir d’amore. Recent accolades include the Rosalind Jackson Memorial Award, and Encouragement Awards from both the Gerda Lissner Foundation Vocal Competition and the Licia Albanese-Puccini Foundation Vocal Competition.

Join the Concertmaster of the Philadelphia Orchestra for one of the most anticipated concerts of the year at Shannondell.

David Kim Violinist David Kim received his Bachelor’s and Master’s degrees from The Juilliard School. In 1986, he was the only American violinist to win a prize at the International Tchaikovsky Competition in Moscow. In 1999,Mr. Kim was named Concertmaster of the Philadelphia Orchestra. In 2008, Mr. Kim was awarded the C. Hartman Kuhn Award, given annually to “the member who has shown ability and enterprise of such character as to enhance the standards and the reputation of The Philadelphia Orchestra.”

Mr. Kim is also a soloist with orchestras around the world.

Jeffrey Lang Jeffrey Lang is a graduate of the Juilliard School and is the associate principal horn of The Philadelphia Orchestra. Formerly principal horn of the Israel Philharmonic, Mr. Lang has performed as guest principal horn of the Bavarian Radio Orchestra, the New York City Opera Orchestra, and the Orpheus Chamber Orchestra. He has also performed with the New York Philharmonic and Metropolitan Opera.

Two standout musicians from the Philadelphia Orchestra return for another beautiful performance at Shannondell.

Kazuo Tokito A native of Sapporo, Japan, Kazuo Tokito came to the U.S. and studied at Oberlin College Conservatory of Music and Indiana University. In 1977, Mr. Tokito joined the Vancouver Symphony Orchestra as assistant flute/ piccolo player. In 1980, he was appointed principal flutist of the CBC Chamber Orchestra of Vancouver, and in 1981, Mr. Tokito won his current position as Solo Piccoloist and Flutist with The Philadelphia Orchestra.

Hirono Oka Making her debut at the age of eleven with the Tokyo Symphony Orchestra,violinist Hirono Oka won numerous competitions before continuing her studies in the U.S. Today, as a member of The Philadelphia Orchestra, Ms. Oka has performed with world-renowned artists and has appeared as a soloist with The San Francisco Chamber Ensemble, The Utica Symphony Orchestra and The Brandenburg Ensemble.

Nitzan Haroz (trombone) & Jeffrey Uhlig (piano) March 30, 7:30 p.m.

Considered one of the world’s great classical trombonists, Nitzan Haroz returns to Shannondell to perform virtuoso and sublime compositions for trombone and piano.

Nitzan Haroz Mr. Haroz joined the Philadelphia Orchestra as Principal Trombone in 1995. From 1993 to 1995, he served as Associate Principal Trombone of The New York Philharmonic. He is the former Principal Trombone of the Rishon-Le Zion Symphony and Opera Orchestra and has also performed in the Jerusalem Symphony Orchestra.

Mr. Haroz studied at The Juilliard School.

Markus Beam Mr. Beam is a rising star in the opera world with performances in the U.S. and Europe. Current appearances include Die Zauberflöte and Rossini’s Figaro, both with Theater St. Gallen, and Bach’s B Minor Mass at Avery Fisher Hall.

Mr. Beam is the recipient of the Dixie Drechsler scholarship from the American Berlin Opera Foundation, Encouragement Grants from the George London Foundation and Opera Index.

Markus is also a Regional Winner of the Metropolitan Opera National Council Auditions.
