Celebrate The Changing Season at Shannondell

A

s we face another changing season, we’re reminded of a favorite quote from Spanish American philosopher George Santayana, “To be interested in the changing seasons is a happier state of mind than to be hopelessly in love with spring.” Well said.

While it’s easy to mourn the departure of warmer weather, when you live in a vibrant community like Shannondell – with so many activities and amenities empowering you to get out and embrace our surroundings – it’s easier to comprehend the wisdom of Mr. Santayana’s words.

Just look around you. In place of hopeful spring gardens are fall gardens of carrots and leaf lettuces. Outdoor bocce games continue in the foreground of blazing leaves. Golf at The Club at Shannondell takes on a more relaxed tempo. Even fitness walks and yoga classes pause to take it all in.

This fall, find reason to celebrate our changing season and the home we call Shannondell. Grab a neighbor and share a new activity, class or concert at The Performing Arts Theater like the return of Concertmaster David Kim in October.

You’ll find it’s, indeed, an inspiring time of year as a Shannondell resident. May we all enjoy!

on’t let falling leaves leave you falling behind on your fitness routines. As cooler temperatures force your attention back indoors, we offer that the fall season is the perfect time to answer the call of 88-degree water in our indoor pool.

Start off with something like Water Walking and work your way up to other classes such as Aqua-Fit, Hydro Pilates and Shallow Shape-up.

Need an incentive? Did you know that just 30 minutes of water walking can burn more than 300 calories! Be sure to check out the bulletin boards in both fitness centers for more fitness and nutritional information.

And don’t miss our NEW fitness classes including Restorative Yoga – a gentler session of movements combined with deep meditation – and Functional Core – a class focusing solely on strengthening that pesky mid-section. So, say goodbye “love handles” and hello to a fitter, happier you by the New Year!

5th Annual Memory Walk Walk to End Alzheimer’s Saturday,October 13 (Rain date, Oct. 14)

Join other Shannondell residents and staff at the outdoor bocce courts for a walk around the community to support the Delaware Valley Chapter of the Alzheimer’s Association. Light refreshments will be served following the walk, including a raffle for prizes. ($10 registration fee required)

Garden Club Join this busy group of gardeners that keep residents and staff stocked with fresh produce during the season.

Woodworking (all levels) Whether you’re an experienced woodworker, or just want to learn, you’ll find plenty of projects and camaraderie in the Shannondell woodworking shops. Projects range from bookcases and benches to pool cue racks and golf course signage.

hannondell Performing Arts Theater welcomes another spectacular season of concerts, song and dance, drama, musicals, opera and maybe just a touch of homespun humor.

Shannondell’s own Actors’ Studio presents “The Way Off Broadway Comedy Series” in September. David Kim, Concertmaster of The Philadelphia Orchestra, returns in October.

Liz Filios and John Jarboe return in November for a night of moonlight and romance. And the season wraps up with a bevy of holiday offerings in December including a Holiday Celebration with the Thomases, The Nutcracker and a holiday concert by The Audubon Symphony Orchestra.

Jeffrey Uhlig, Artistic Director & Pianist Broadway & Concert Series Jeffrey Uhlig has performed with many outstanding singers and instrumentalists including members of The Philadelphia Orchestra, The New York Philharmonic and The Metropolitan Opera. He plays regularly with The Philadelphia Orchestra Concertmaster David Kim, Principal Cellist, Hai-Ye Ni and Principal Trombonist, Nitzan Haroz. Mr. Uhlig studied piano with William Masselos and Gaby Casadesus and studied art song literature with Dalton Baldwin. He received a Master of Music Degree from West Chester University.

Alex Bechtel A Philadelphia-based actor, writer, and musician, Mr. Bechtel has performed with 1812 Productions, The Walnut Street Theatre and Act II Playhouse among others. Recent credits include This is the Week That Is, The Musical of Musicals: The Musical!, Here’s Tony and First Impressions, and Honk!. Additionally, Mr. Bechtel works as a pianist, vocal coach and teaching-artist for The University of the Arts, Walnut Street Theatre, The Wilma Theatre, and The Arden Theatre.

Greg Nix Greg Nix, a Philadelphia based actor and writer, has collaborated extensively with 1812 Productions including their annual political comedy revue – This Is The Week That Is. Mr. Nix has also appeared onstage at the Walnut Street Theatre, Theatre Horizon (Barrymore – Best Ensemble, BWW.com Award – Best Supporting Actor), and the Media Theatre. He holds a BFA from the University of the Arts.

Liz Filios Ms. Filios has performed locally at the Arden Theatre, the Wilma Theatre, the Walnut Street Theatre, the Joyce Soho, and the Bang On A Can Contemporary Music Festival in New York. She has also performed with the Cape Town Opera Company in South Africa, the International Opera Theatre in Italy, and throughout Europe as a cabaret singer for Celebrity Cruise Lines. Recently, Ms. Filios was nominated as Best Actress in a Musical for her performances in Joseph and the Amazing Technicolor Dreamcoat and Singin’ in the Rain.

John Jarboe A graduate of the University of Michigan, Mr. Jarboe has been seen on several Philadelphia stages including the Baker in The Selkie Project, Bernard in Certain Old Clothes at Nice People Theatre Company, Simon in Passing By,and Jason in the PGLTF production of BARE: The Pop Opera. He has also appeared in both Showboat and The Wizard of Oz at The Media Theater.

Anna Marie Ahn Petersen Ms. Petersen joined the Philadelphia Orchestra immediately upon graduation from the Curtis Institute of Music in 1992. She has collaborated in chamber music with such luminaries as Wolfgang Sawallisch, Yefim Bronfman and Christopher Parkening. She is a frequent guest at chamber music festivals and has performed as soloist with the Seoul Philharmonic and the Orquesta Filarmonic de Bogota.

Masterpieces for Flute and Piano

Edward Schultz An active performer as both a soloist and an ensemble member in chamber music concerts in the Philadelphia area for more than three decades, Mr. Schultz joined the Chamber Orchestra of Philadelphia as Principal Flute in the fall of 2002.

He is also principal flutist for the Pennsylvania Ballet Orchestra, the Philly Pops and the Academy of Vocal Arts Opera Orchestra. A graduate of New England Conservatory, Edward has studied with James Pappoutsakis, Bernard Goldberg and Jim Walker.

David Kim Violinist David Kim received his Bachelor’s and Master’s degrees from The Juilliard School. In 1986, he was the only American violinist to win a prize at the International Tchaikovsky Competition in Moscow.

In 1999,Mr. Kim was named Concertmaster of the Philadelphia Orchestra. In 2008, Mr. Kim was awarded the C. Hartman Kuhn Award, given annually to “the member who has shown ability and enterprise of such character as to enhance the standards and the reputation of The Philadelphia Orchestra.” Mr. Kim is also a soloist with orchestras around the world.

The range of styles from Mr. Vaughn’s program is proof that the Trombone is capable of so much more than slow ballads.

Matthew Vaughn Currently Acting Principal of the Philadelphia Orchestra, Matthew Vaughn served in the United States Air Force Concert Band in Washington, D.C., from 1993-1997. He has performed with the Atlanta Symphony and National Symphony and has been featured as a soloist with the San Antonio Symphony, the United States Air Force Band, the Indiana University Symphony Orchestra, and the Richmond (Indiana) Symphony. Mr. Vaughn earned a Bachelor of Music degree with high distinction and a Performer’s Certificate from Indiana University in 1992.

He currently teaches at Temple University.

Lisa Thomas Ms. Thomas has won a number of vocal competitions and often appears in recital and concert with the Ocean City Pops Orchestra. She has sung more than 20 leading roles with opera companies around the U.S. including the Pennsylvania Opera Theater, Opera Columbus, Opera Company of Philadelphia, Opera Delaware and the Sarasota (Florida) Opera. A native of Rochester, New York, Ms. Thomas received her Bachelor of Music degree in Vocal Performance from the Oberlin Conservatory in Ohio.

Todd Thomas Todd Thomas is making a name for himself as a Verdi baritone, a voice category that seems to be increasingly rare. Recently he made eagerly awaited debuts with Santa Barbara Opera, (Tosca), Opera Grand Rapids (La Traviata) and Opera Toledo, (I Pagliacci) among other companies and orchestras. He has been featured with such orchestras as the Westfield Symphony in a concert performance of Verdi’s Otello, where Mr. Thomas sang the demonic Iago. He has also performed with the State College Choral Society and Princeton Symphony.

About George Santayana (1863 – 1952) Best known for a single sentence that Santayana wrote in his 1905 book Reason in Common Sense: “Those who cannot remember the past are condemned to repeat it,” this philosopher, poet, literary and cultural critic is a principal figure in Classical American Philosophy.
