True Answers: A resident interview

Dorothy and Howard Hinkley moved to Shannondell in 2008 from Chester County. Their discovery process is not unlike many others. And now, neither is the elation with their decision. Q: Tell us about what led to your decision to move to Shannondell.

Shannondell residents enjoy indoor and outdoor bocce daily

The Ball’s In Your Court What is bocce? Don’t feel bad if you don’t know. The sport didn’t really take off in the US until the late 1980s. Today, bocce is a top recreational choice, but its history dates back 7,000 years. Michael Kilian of the Chicago Tribune wrote of the sport, “The Egyptians played it when they weren’t struggling with pyramid stones, and the Romans picked it up from them. The barbarians within the Roman Empire took a liking to it – the Gauls producing a French version called ‘boule.’ The English, who never quite got the hang of things, turned it into the pastime you see on television’s ‘Championship Bowling.’ Unlike ‘Championship Bowling,’ bocce is

not a game of roll, slam, crash, rack and have another brewski. It’s a true sport involving skill, fitness, strategy and cunning.” One reason the sport so popular among Shannondell residents is because it allows for team play among people with varying degrees of agility and fitness. Bocce borrows principles from both traditional bowling and curling, wherein one team tries gain a favorable position on the court by knocking the other team’s balls out of the way. For a tour of all of Shannondell’s expansive recreational facilities, including indoor and outdoor bocce courts, please call 610.728.5211.

A: We began talking about how our longtime home was becoming more difficult and expensive to maintain. This led to us looking at options that offered more security, including access to healthcare, and social opportunities. After receiving an invitation to Lunch at Shannondell, we visited and followed up with a personal tour. Even though we looked at many communities, we both felt that Shannondell provided a lifestyle that nourished our current independence and offered many opportunities to learn, grow and stay healthy. Q: Did you own your own home at the time? A: We did. Given everything you read about the current downturn in the national real estate market, we thought that selling our home might be difficult. But, Shannondell provided a knowledgeable real estate manager who worked with our agent to help market the home. As a result, it sold in less than 60 days. It was a very pleasant surprise. Q: What happened next? A: The folks at Shannondell helped us arrange a moving service and even provided complimentary unpacking. We had picked out paint colors, carpet, tile and Continued on back page

The Importance of Flu Shots From MayoClinic.com

According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), the flu is estimated to cause more than 36,000 deaths annually in the United States. In addition, it sends about 200,000 people to the hospital. The rate of flu-related complications is even higher for people with heart disease. If you have heart disease, you’re at increased risk of complications from the flu — including pneumonia, respiratory failure, heart attack and death. Having the flu can also cause dehydration and worsen pre-existing conditions such as heart failure, diabetes or asthma.

Winter Wellness Tips For Seniors From The Desk of Dr. David Galinsky

1. Stay Warm. Dress in layers and remove wet clothing as soon as possible.

2. Don’t Shovel It. Have a helper shovel snow for you –– and always wear well-treaded shoes outdoors.

3. Eat and Drink. Boost immunity and avoid dehydration with plenty of fruits, vegetables and water.

4. Heat It Safely. Unplug those portable heaters, and install a carbon monoxide detector in your home.

5. See Your Doctor. See your doctor for seasonal tips and get your flu shot early.

Fortunately, getting a flu shot can reduce your risk of catching the flu or developing complications from the flu. Flu shot clinics are being held in the Philadelphia area at most CVS locations, including: CVS 2801 EGYPT ROAD AUDUBON, PA 19407 Call 610.666.0512 for more information.
