And We Fall Back To, Perhaps, Our Most Inspiring Season For many, the fall season is their “spring.” It’s the time of year they look forward to all year. New TV shows. Football. World series. Colorful landscapes. Cooling weather. Less crowded travel destinations.

And, of course, the coming holidays.

As those Shannondell residents who have taken one of our autumn New York City field trips will attest, strolling down Fifth Avenue after attending a Broadway musical on a beautiful October afternoon does have a certain allure.

Also alluring on the Shannondell campus this fall – Active Living Week, including Oktoberfest, a Halloween costume party, learning opportunities covering topics from ancient Egypt to current events, a Memory Walk benefitting the Alzheimer’s Association, dozens of fitness and aquatics classes to improve your personal wellness, and last, but certainly not least, more than thirty impressive performances in the Shannondell Performing Arts Theater. It’s all there, right outside your front door.

Yours to enjoy and share with good friends and neighbors. After all, that’s what makes living at Shannondell so inspiring. We wouldn’t have it any other way.

Journey to Germany! A Shannondell Active Living Week

Shannondell is proud to, once again, participate in this year’s Active Aging Week (which we’ve renamed “Active Living Week”), initiated by the International Council on Active Aging. This engaging weeklong program promotes the benefits of leading an active, healthier lifestyle. It also highlights the ability of senior adults to live well, regardless of age or health conditions.

So let’s get started ... quick, how many miles from Shannondell to Germany? Well, we’ll find out together when you join us for a trek from Shannondell to the land best known for its beer, castles and a wall that came tumbling down. No need for your passports for this trip though.

If you choose to participate, we’ll be tracking our collective steps all week with pedometers (supplied) with the end goal of walking ... are you ready ... almost 4,000 miles. Wow!

September 27 - October 3

We’ll reveal our daily progress with large maps displayed in the mailrooms. The resident who logs the most miles on their pedometer by week’s end will receive a grand prize. But even if you fall a few steps short, there are plenty of other

opportunities to have fun and claim prizes at special events like a lecture on the art of making beer, a beer tasting, a music class featuring German composers, a community scavenger hunt, a German band concert and more. The weeklong celebration

culminates with an Oktoberfest party.

It’s going to be a blast, so be on the lookout for details coming from Activities, and plan to join your friends and neighbors for a fun, active week at Shannondell.

SPECIAL EVENTS 8th Annual Alzheimer’s Awareness Memory Walk: Moments & Memories Saturday, October 17, 10 a.m.

(Rain date: Oct. 18) Join with family, friends and neighbors for this worthy annual event to raise awareness of Alzheimer’s Disease. At the end of this (short) walk, we’ll enjoy light refreshments and drawings for raffle prizes. All proceeds raised benefit the Alzheimer’s Association of Delaware Valley. Don’t miss this great opportunity to get some exercise, enjoy the company of friends and family, and support a great cause.

We’ll be striking our best Marilyn pose and Sinatra stare for the Paparazzi Photo Booth. Then we’ll be doing our best Fred Astaire imitation on the dance floor to the swinging sounds of Joe Smith & The Classics in Ashcroft and The Sounds of Swing in Bradford. The champagne will flow. The food will impress. And, if only for one night, Tinseltown will have nothing on Shannondell.

Along the way, you’ll learn that none of us react to the world around us in the same way and why that’s a good thing. Dr. Colavita (Pittsburgh) is an Emeritus Associate Professor of Psychology and the recipient of the prestigious Chancellor’s Distinguished Teaching Award.

Using CT scan technology, the British Museum recently concluded a series of studies on ancient Egyptian human remains in their collections. Based on the findings, we’ll look at the lives of eight ancient Egyptians and the stories their remains can tell of the lives that they lived thousands of years ago.

The ancient Egyptians both understood human anatomy and practiced medicine. Surprisingly complex, medical procedures are outlined in detail on papyrus and the physical evidence of medical procedures is present on ancient Egyptian human remains. This presentation illuminates ancient Egypt’s medical world and examines actual cases.

Nestled deep in the mountains of Jordan’s rift valley is the lost city of Petra. If you recognize the setting, there’s a good reason.

Portions of the movie Indiana Jones and the Last Crusade were filmed here. Listed as one of the new Seven Wonders of the World, Dr. Phillips spent an entire summer excavating a temple. This presentation unearths much about Petra, including if archaeology really is like Indiana Jones.

One of the first cultures that the Penn Museum participated in archaeology was ancient Egypt.

An early museum supporter Eckley Coxe, Jr. (of the Coxe Brothers Coal Mining family), along with his mother Lizzie, made several trips to Egypt starting in the late 1800s. We’ll relive the story of Eckley and Lizzie’s adventures and discuss the profound effect they had on Egyptology at Penn.

Jeffrey Uhlig, Artistic Director & Pianist, Broadway & Concert Series Jeffrey Uhlig performs regularly with many outstanding singers and instrumentalists including members of The Philadelphia Orchestra, The New York Philharmonic and The Metropolitan Opera. Mr. Uhlig studied piano with William Masselos and Gaby Casadesus and studied art song literature with Dalton Baldwin. He received a Master of Music Degree from West Chester University.

Hirono Oka Debuting at the age of eleven with the Tokyo Symphony Orchestra, violinist Hirono Oka won numerous competitions before continuing her studies in the U.S. Today, as a member of The Philadelphia Orchestra, Ms. Oka has performed with world-renowned artists and has appeared as a soloist with many leading Orchestras and Ensembles.

Burchard Tang Burchard Tang joined The Philadelphia Orchestra after serving with the Curtis Symphony and the New York String Seminar. He’s also performed with the Brandenburg Ensemble and at many festivals, including Marlboro, Music from Angel Fire and The Seattle Chamber Music Festival. Mr. Tang received a BA degree from the Curtis Institute of Music.

Yu Xi Wang Pianist Yu Xi made her Carnegie Hall debut in 2002 and subsequently released her debut CD. As an avid soloist and chamber musician, Yu Xi has performed in venues such as New York’s Alice Tully Hall, Lincoln Center and Beijing’s Forbidden City Concert Hall.

Aside from performing, Yu Xi has taught piano at Music Institute of Chicago, Juilliard and the Curtis Institute of Music.

Chloé has also performed roles with Central City Opera, Chesapeake Concert Opera, Center City Opera Theater and New York Lyric Opera. Also, she was a Finalist in the George London Foundation Awards Competition and the Opera Index Vocal Competition.

Markus Beam With a growing list of roles in both the U.S and Europe, American baritone Markus Beam is establishing a name for himself in the opera world.

Appearances by Mr. Beam include Die Zauberflöte and Rossini’s Figaro, and Bach’s B Minor Mass at Avery Fisher Hall. Mr. Beam is the recipient of the Dixie Drechsler scholarship from the American Berlin Opera Foundation and is also a Regional Winner of the Metropolitan Opera National Council Auditions.

One of the most successful Broadway shows of the 1950s, the original Broadway production of Guys & Dolls won five Tony Awards. However, what most people remember is the film adaptation starring Marlon Brando and Frank Sinatra.

An oddball romantic comedy, Guys & Dolls follows the story of gambler, Nathan Detroit, betting fellow gambler, Sky Masterson, that he can’t take missionary and perceived prude Sarah Brown to dinner. In the meantime, Nathan is left to deal with his girlfriend Adelaide. With songs like Luck Be A Lady and Fugue for Tinhorns, this classic American musical has enjoyed three Broadway revivals and countless regional productions, including this show directed by Deb Schrager and produced by Michelle Miller and Loretta Rurode.
