Summertime in the Shannondell Gardens 2

Make Time to Stop and Smell The Roses This Summer It may not feel like summer yet, but the signs at Shannondell point to the season’s approaching (and welcome) arrival.

Our gardeners are busy prepping their plots, trading seed catalogs and offering growing advice, solicited or not.

Walking clubs are already heading outdoors to gain a little distance and fresh air. And our birders are reporting the early arrival of warblers and thrushes on porch and patio feeders. Also planning to head outdoors soon – Linsey’s enthusiastic yoga students and Maria Orr’s talented painters.

In the Shannondell Performing Arts Theater, close to 40 performances will take the stage over the summer season.

Our own Shannondell Singers kick off opening week in May, popular vocalist Krissy Fraelich returns in June followed by a special school-age production of Les Miserable by King of Prussia Players in July. The season closes out the end of August with the toe-tapping Tri-county Band.

We invite you to head outdoors often and enjoy all that the warmer months offer ... the fauna, fireflies, fireworks and festivals that grace our community and neighboring Valley Forge countryside. Just make time to stop and smell the roses. You’ll find them blooming all summer in the Shannondell Gardens.

Cosmology: The History & Nature of Our Universe (Part 1 of a 3-part series) Wednesdays: May 4 – June 8, 2 p.m.

(Ashcroft Movie Theater) The “knowns” and “unknowns” making up the history and nature of our universe make the science of cosmology a fascinating, and philosophically profound field of study. This six-week session starts with how the universe was born and how it has evolved, and ends with the three great eras of cosmic history.

Professor Mark Whittle (UVA) has been teaching astronomy since 1986. He is also committed to community outreach on all areas of astronomy, particularly cosmology.

The roaring ‘90s give way to a new China in the New Millennium, a country rising on many fronts, but a country that still battles governmental censorship.

Having examined proof that ancient Egyptians did, indeed, understand human anatomy and practice medicine, we’ll further our study of ancient Egypt’s medical world.

By examining images of actual Egyptian human skeletal remains taken from my recent excavations in the cemetery complex to the west of the Great Pyramids, we’ll see evidence of 4,500 year-old cases of diseases that still infect humans today, and the not so successful treatment of severe trauma.

Arriving in Egypt at the time of Cleopatra VII, the Romans adopted aspects of ancient Egyptian religion into their own, including the practice of mummification. To this practice, however, the Romans added portraits of the deceased, painted onto wood panels and positioned over their face as part of the mummy wrappings. These unearthed portraits are intriguing in their portrayals of people who look, astonishingly, like modern day Egyptians.

(Bradford Movie Theater) The 1922 discovery of Tutankhamun (King Tut) set off a wave of “Egyptomania.”

Ancient Egyptian themes soon appeared in fashion, popular culture and eventually on the big screen. From The Mummy with Boris Karloff in 1932 to the movie by the same name with Brendan Fraser in 1999, Ancient Egyptian architecture also influenced the design of 20th century movie theaters.

We’ll view snippets of the movies and the theaters during the peak of the summer movie season.

Grab your pith helmets and sunscreen. In the heat of summer, we’re headed to Bahariya, in the western Egyptian desert. Here, Egypt’s own Indiana Jones, Dr. Zahi Hawass, and his team made an astonishing discovery in 1999. Dating to the Greek period, as many as 10,000 gold-gilded mummies and related artifacts are thought to lie beneath the sand.

Already, 34 tombs have revealed superbly preserved artifacts. Don’t miss this glimpse into an incredible find and its treasures.

Artists Among Us: Pohlig & Ulsh June 10 – July 14 Two talented Shannondell artists Harry Pohlig and Ken Ulsh share recent works in acrylics, oils and watercolor. Harry, a retired real estate executive, has been studying painting for more than 20 years with several artists before coming to Shannondell. After spending his career in a creative field – advertising, Ken picked up where he left off in high school with the talent, time, and thanks to Maria Orr and Shirley Daly, the guidance to create canvases that don’t require headlines or client approval.

Jeffrey Uhlig, Artistic Director & Pianist, Broadway & Concert Series Jeffrey Uhlig performs regularly with many outstanding singers and instrumentalists including members of The Philadelphia Orchestra, The New York Philharmonic and The Metropolitan Opera. Mr. Uhlig studied piano with William Masselos and Gaby Casadesus and studied art song literature with Dalton Baldwin. He received a Master of Music Degree from West Chester University.

An accomplished singer and theatrical artist in classical music, Marian has also been featured with orchestras around the world, including the Shanghai Symphony. Favorite roles include: Cosette in Les MisĂŠrables, Christine in Phantom and Marian in The Music Man, among others.

Ms. Powell is also a successful recording artist. Her most recent recording includes original songs written by pianist and composer Matthew Qualye.

Marian currently resides and teaches vocal training in Collegeville.

Stars like Merman, Channing, Peters and Minnelli created Broadway roles and recordings that led Broadway historians to agree that the archetypal Broadway star is, indeed, a woman. Join us for an evening honoring these divas of the stage.

Krissy Fraelich Soprano Kristine (Krissy) Fraelich has been performing for more than 25 years including, most recently, in the Walnut Street Theater’s production of Elf. Other recent credits include Arden Theater’s Sunday in the Park with George and Next to Normal. Making her Broadway debut in Frank Wildhorn’s The Civil War, Ms. Fraelich followed by playing the Narrator in the first tour of Joseph and the Amazing Technicolor Dreamcoat.

Kristine is a member of the Broadway Gospel Choir and has performed with Linda Eder at Carnegie Hall.

A champion of works by living composers, oboist Alexandra von der Embse has worked with George Crumb, Richard Danielpour, Jennifer Higdon, Steve Mackey and other peers, who are establishing themselves as the next generation of great composers. In 2014, she became one of the inaugural fellows for Curtis Institute of Music’s Artist Year. And her formed quintet Ensemble 39 opened Fringe Festival’s 2014-2015 season. A graduate of the Curtis Institute and Oberlin Conservatory of Music, Alexandra also studied with Ariana Ghez and James Moore.

Todd Thomas Todd Thomas is making a name for himself as a Verdi baritone, a voice category that seems to be increasingly rare. Recent performances include Puccini’s Tosca at the New York City Opera and Santa Barbara Opera, La Traviata with Opera Grand Rapids and I Pagliacci with Opera Toledo. Mr. Thomas has also been featured with orchestras, including the Westfield Symphony, the State College Choral Society and the Princeton Symphony.

Mark O’Kain Mark O’Kain is Principal Percussionist with The Ocean City Pops Orchestra. Mr. O’Kain is also a frequent percussionist with touring productions of Broadway shows including Edward Scissorhands, My Fair Lady, Les Miserables, and more recently, Mary Poppins.

A former member of “The President’s Own” U.S. Marine Band, today Mr. O’Kain collaborates frequently with Jeffrey Uhlig – recently releasing a CD – Classics to Ragtime.

An evening of classic arias and Broadway favorites, including songs from Carmen to Cole Porter.

Jody Kidwell Ms. Kidwell was a winner in the third Luciano Pavarotti International Voice Competition, and was later chosen by Mr. Pavarotti to appear in Luisa Miller, filmed by PBS. Ms. Kidwell has also performed the major concert works of Verdi, Beethoven, Rossini, Elgar, DeFalla, Mahler and Mozart with the North Carolina Symphony, The Las Vegas Philharmonic, The Philadelphia Orchestra, and The National Symphony of San Jose, Costa Rica and Bogota, Columbia.

This musical comedy with music by Mary Rodgers, lyrics by Marshall Barer, and book by Jay Thompson may be best known for the Broadway debut of stage and TV legend Carol Burnett in the original production, and a 1996 Broadway revival starring Sarah Jessica Parker (of Sex In The City fame).
