The secret to living more inspired is reawakening In the story of The Secret Garden, an intriguing musical coming to the Shannondell Performing Arts Theater in May (page 46), Mary, the main character, and the magical garden both experience a parallel reawakening. What an appropriate story for this wonderful time of year at Shannondell.

With the return of warming weather, a greening landscape, our migratory birds and Phillies baseball (no comment on projections) also comes the reawakening of Shannondell residents’ bountiful gardens, outdoor bocce, outdoor painting classes, outdoor walking groups, dog walks, golf at The Club or simply enjoying a good read by the Ashcroft pond.

As this issue reveals, these are but a handful of the activities, events, classes, lectures, concerts and more available to you on a daily basis as a Shannondell resident. In the Shannondell Performing Arts Theater alone, more than 30 performances will take the stage, including musicals, Classical, Pop, Jazz and the sounds of Swing, Broadway tunes, comedy, dance and drama.

So, make this the season for a little reawakening of your own. Pick one or two activities that you’ve never tried and give it a shot. You’ll find others doing the same. And it’s exploration like this, shared with good friends and neighbors, that makes Shannondell such an inspiring place to live – winter, spring, summer or fall!

(Ashcroft Movie Theater) By current estimates, China is poised to become the richest, most powerful nation on earth, outpacing even the U.S. To appreciate just how far it’s come since the collapse of its once-glorious empire in 1911, we’ll pick up with Chiang’s Last Stand (1945–1949) and end with the Storm Subsides (1968/69). Professor Richard Baum, Distinguished Professor of Political Science (UCLA), is an expert in modern Chinese politics and a frequent commentator on Chinese and East Asian affairs for the BBC, CNN, and National Public Radio.

Journey to Egypt By Dr. Stephen Phillips, Ed.D. Temples of Ancient Egypt: Testament to Time Thursday, May 21, 2 p.m. (Bradford Movie Theater) This class continues our April lecture (attending the prior lecture is not a prerequisite for this class) where we began examining a number of Egypt’s most famous temples. We’ll return to these magnificent structures, traveling deep inside for a better understanding of their function, architecture and evolution, including their role in ancient Egyptian life.

Word and Image: The Unity of Art & Writing in Ancient Egypt Friday, June 5, 2 p.m.

(Ashcroft Movie Theater) The inter-relationship of art and writing in the world of ancient Egypt is far deeper than first meets the eye.

To the Egyptians, writing was considered divine, not mere words.

As we’ll discuss, writing became incorporated into Egyptian art and architecture. But what do the hieroglyphics mean? What were they used for? And, how do we read them?

Join us in June, and we’ll explore the answers together.

Off the Beaten Path: Rarely Visited Egyptian Temples & Tombs: Part 2 Pass the Garum! A Culinary Journey of Ancient Egypt & the Mediterranean Friday, July 10, 2 p.m.

(Bradford Movie Theater) We’ll start by exploring the diet of ancient Egypt – what we know and how we know it. We’ll, then, trace the spread of this fare into the Mediterranean world of ancient Greece and ancient Rome. Meals in the ancient world were more varied than you might think. Grains, fruits and fish you expect, but what about vegetables, wine and cheese? And where does garum fit in? We’ll answer those hungry for the answers.

(Ashcroft Movie Theater) The journey continues as we, once again, head off the beaten path and explore Egyptian temples and tombs rarely visited by outsiders other than archaeologists.

Together, we’ll visit Beni Hasan (and the nearby Cave of Artemis), Bubastis, Tanis and Tuna el-Gebel (necropolis of Khmun). Each has it’s own mystique, but one thing’s for sure – you won’t find any of these sites on any tourist map!

Together, we’ll discover the personalities, the influences as well as the dazzling virtuosity of the world’s greatest pianists.

Until recently, the illnesses of U.S. presidents, while in office, were unknown to the public. Now, this information sheds new light on administrations, including LBJ. For example, did Johnson’s paranoid personality and gall bladder disorders affect his anti-poverty bill or Voting Rights Act? Dr. Schwartz will cover these and other topics.

An ARTalk: From Sea to Shining Sea with Anarie Terezo Friday, May 15, 2 p.m. (Ashcroft Movie Theater) Join us as we travel across the country, east to west – admiring 19th and 20th Century American Art. We’ll visit art colonies along the way and discuss the role these places played in developing strong voices in our artists.

You’re sure to recognize a few familiar works. You’ll also, likely, be introduced to a few new American artists along the way, including Cole, Inness, Twachtman, Wood, O’Keefe, Sully and more.

America’s National Trails System

(Bradford Movie Theater) Did you know that there are 30 national and scenic historic trails forming a 54,000-mile network across 49 of the 50 states? As we’ll learn, these trails are not just about hiking, but also history, education, physical challenge and community building. Serving as the guardian of the U.S. Constitution, this secretive yet very human institution rarely reveals its inner workings. We’ll attempt to peel back the layers by examining key Supreme Court cases (including the upcoming gay marriage case), the language of the law and the men and women who make up the current bench.

Jeffrey Uhlig, Artistic Director & Pianist, Broadway & Concert Series Jeffrey Uhlig performs regularly with many outstanding singers and instrumentalists including members of The Philadelphia Orchestra, The New York Philharmonic and The Metropolitan Opera. Mr. Uhlig studied piano with William Masselos and Gaby Casadesus and studied art song literature with Dalton Baldwin. He received a Master of Music Degree from West Chester University.

Marian Murphy Powell An accomplished singer and theatrical artist in classical music, Marian has also been featured with orchestras around the world, including the Shanghai Symphony. Favorite roles include: Cosette in Les MisĂŠrables, Christine in Phantom and Marian in The Music Man, among others. Ms. Powell is also a successful recording artist. Her most recent recording includes original songs written by pianist and composer Matthew Qualye. Marian currently resides and teaches vocal training in Collegeville.

Krissy Fraelich (vocalist) & Jeffrey Uhlig (piano) June 5, 7:30 p.m.

A 25-year veteran of the stage, Ms. Fraelich sings the best of Broadway with both dramatic and lyrical songs.

Krissy Fraelich Soprano Kristine (Krissy) Fraelich has been performing for more than 25 years including, most recently, in the Walnut Street Theater’s production of Elf. Other recent credits include Arden Theater’s Sunday in the Park with George and Next to Normal. Making her Broadway debut in Frank Wildhorn’s The Civil War, Ms. Fraelich followed by playing the Narrator in the first tour of Joseph and the Amazing Technicolor Dreamcoat.

Kristine is a member of the Broadway Gospel Choir and has performed with Linda Eder at Carnegie Hall.

Priscilla Lee Cellist Priscilla Lee, a 2005 Avery Fisher Career Grant recipient, began studying at age five and made her solo debut in 1998 with the Los Angeles Philharmonic. She received a Master of Music degree from the Mannes College of Music. She has participated in the festivals of Marlboro, Santa Fe, Seattle, Delaware, St. Denis in Paris, Kingston, Lexington and Taos. Priscilla was also a member of the prestigious Lincoln Center’s Chamber Music Society Two for the 2006-2009 seasons. Additionally, Priscilla is a founding member of the piano trio, Trio Cavatina.

The Concertmaster of The Pennsylvania Ballet Orchestra performs works by Mozart, Kreisler and Spanish composers.

Luigi Mazzocchi Concertmaster for the Pennsylvania Ballet Orchestra and Associate Concertmaster for the Delaware Symphony Orchestra, Mr. Mazzocchi studied violin with José F. del Castillo in his native country of Venezuela. Since 1996, Luigi has been living in the U.S. where he studied violin with Liliana Ciulei at Rowan University. He has won many solo competitions including the “Del Castillo” Latin American and 2000 Temple University (PA) competitions. Mr. Mazzocchi currently resides in Philadelphia where he serves on the faculty of the Wilmington Music School.

Mark O’Kain Mark O’Kain is Principal Percussionist with The Ocean City Pops Orchestra. Mr. O’Kain is also a frequent percussionist with touring productions of Broadway shows including Edward Scissorhands, My Fair Lady, Les Miserables, and more recently, Mary Poppins.

A former member of “The President’s Own” U.S. Marine Band, today Mr. O’Kain collaborates frequently with Jeffrey Uhlig – recently releasing a CD – Classics to Ragtime.

A Diva Sings Opera to Broadway Jody Kidwell (mezzo-soprano) & Jeffrey Uhlig (piano) August 5, 7:30 p.m.

An acclaimed mezzo-soprano, Ms. Kidwell returns to perform great arias and classic Broadway favorites.

Jody Kidwell Ms. Kidwell was a winner in the third Luciano Pavarotti International Voice Competition, and was later chosen by Mr. Pavarotti to appear in Luisa Miller, filmed by PBS. Ms. Kidwell has also performed the major concert works of Verdi, Beethoven, Rossini, Elgar, DeFalla, Mahler and Mozart with the North Carolina Symphony, The Las Vegas Philharmonic, The Philadelphia Orchestra, and The National Symphony of San Jose, Costa Rica and Bogota, Columbia.

Orphaned as a child in India, Mary Lennox returns to Yorkshire to live with her reclusive uncle and his invalid son. The estate’s many wonders include a secret garden that Mary helps bring to life. And in the process, the garden returns the favor. Called “elegant” and “entrancing” by critics, you’ll find yourself drawn into this production by Methacton Community Theater. ($11 for residents)
