LETTER FROM OUR PASTOR Dear Friends of Our Lady of the Lakes, Our student body is a faith-filled group of young people containing a definite thirst for God and knowledge deep within their hearts. They are to be commended as extraordinary young people with a passion for Jesus Christ. Our students, past and present, are a tremendous compliment to us. They used the educational foundation received here and represent us well in their endeavors. This attitude is part of what makes Catholic schools so great. We have the ability to charitably teach discipline and hope in the resurrection of Jesus Christ from the dead. It brings me great joy and satisfaction to be the Pastor at our parish and our PreK-12 Catholic school. Our children are a great gift from God and I am simply honored to play a part in their formation. This is yet another benefit of a Catholic education. At Our Lady of the Lakes we are not interested in simply providing an alternative to the public school system. We fulfill a ministry by serving God while providing a profound educational experience helping our students to become joyful missionary disciples. After graduation, our students excel academically receiving the highest honors possible at institutions of great distinction. We must continue to be part of this mission and communicate our successes to one and all. Please consider a Catholic education at Our Lady of the Lakes for your children. God Bless, Fr. Scott Thibodeau Pastor

LETTER FROM OUR HEAD OF SCHOOL Dear Friends of Our Lady of the Lakes, Our Lady of the Lakes Catholic School embodies a safe, nurturing, and faith-based educational environment where each child receives significant personal attention and love from a family-like community. It is a place where students learn to love God and one another while getting to know who they are and how to be the best they can be. It is a blessing to work in a place of hope where we share the mission of living our vocation as disciples, modeling Christ’s love in the care we give our students. At Our Lady of the Lakes Catholic School we spend every day “guided by the Holy Spirit, under the Mantle of Mary”. We invite you to see for yourself what makes Our Lady of the Lakes Catholic School such a one-of-a-kind place to learn and grow through God and the Catholic faith. God Bless, Mrs. Jeanine Kenny Head of School

MEET OUR NEW DIRECTOR OF YOUNG ADULT & YOUTH EVANGELIZATION: MICHELLE KONARZEWSKI “I am almost 23 years old and was born in Davisburg Michigan; it is a blessing to have a calling so close to home. I come from a large family, many of whom are students and parishioners here. I am the second youngest of five children and have two sweet nephews. I attended Clarkston schools through middle school and then graduated from Holly High School. I received a bachelor‘s degree in theology and psychology from a little Catholic university called Lourdes in Sylvania, Ohio. During school I also taught catechism, worked in campus ministry, and led spiritual retreats. Then finally, God called me back home to Lakes. Many of my interests have to do with being outdoors, but I will also never say no to a board or card game. I love to play sports, travel, and explore nature. I am excited to work with teens and young adults and aim to work with and form groups centered on prayer, service, and community. Our faith is definitely not boring, so let’s zealously explore it together and allow the Holy Spirit to set us on fire with love.”

senior luncheons This year our Parish staff brought forth an idea to host senior luncheons for our community. This consists of a monthly gathering, with a different theme each month, that allows our community to socialize with not only other parishioners but also our Our Lady of the Lakes Parish School students. Our students have started to create such special relationships with our parishioners. We are beyond grateful that our students are able to have these experiences on a regular basis. The students help serve meals, assist our guests, and sit and engage in friendly conversation. These events are loved by both our community and our students.

We Say Farewell to Legacy Staff Mrs. Mary Cottrell has seen it all and done it all for OLL in her years of service. She has been a dedicated supporter of our students for 21 years, teaching, volunteering, and working to build the heart of our technology department. Not only was Mrs. Cottrell a dedicated staff member, she was also a dedicated Laker parent to daughters Heather (‘09) and Michelle (‘11). Mrs. Cottrell is always willing to put in the time to solve any problem or help create something new to ensure that our Lakers have the absolute best. Thank you Mrs. Cottrell. We are grateful for your hard work, dedication, and experience! Mrs. Dalley worked as assistant technology director and all around school support for over 20 years. She became a part of the Laker community in 1993 when she enrolled her oldest son, Steve (‘05) at OLL. She is always willing and gratefully able to solve any problem that arises. Mrs. Dalley has spent hours supporting our new chromebook initiative this fall, and we are forever grateful for the many years she has devoted to ensuring our teachers and students have access to the technology they need to make their lessons successful. We wish Mrs. Cottrell & Mrs. Dalley a retirement filled with love, laughter and pride in knowing they have truly made a difference to our Laker Family! “God has truly blessed me during my time at Lakes and I thank everyone who has been a part of my career here. I will miss all the great people at Lakes, but I am looking forward to my next adventure with my husband in retirement!” - Mary Cottrell “My contribution to the school, the students, and our parents has been the most rewarding years of my life. The Lakes community will always be in my heart.” - Kim Dalley

High School Teacher revamps school Newscast Mr. Liedel, new to Our Lady of the Lakes during the 2020-2021 school year, decided it was time that the Laker Anchor become a consistent part of OLL and took the lead rebuilding the school newscast.

“When Our Lady of the Lakes wanted to revamp the school’s newscast, I saw it as an opportunity for students to benefit through their creativity. Newscasts can spread school spirit, humor and also give the students an opportunity to interact with their peers about upcoming events, school news and business that staff and students want to shed light on. In my opinion it is very important that we give all students an equal chance to express themselves in order to help them grow and mature”, says Mr. Liedel.

“The Digital Media class is important in high school because it creates STUDENT INVOVLEMENT. Staff and students get to find out what’s coming up or what he/she may have missed that week. You learn how to edit video clips, different camera shots and angles (and the meaning behind them), green screen effects and script writing.” - Lucas Miller (Current Student)

TEACHERS OF THE YEAR 2022 THERESA OWENS HIGH SCHOOL

Theresa was awarded the Excellence in Teaching Award as well as the AOD Teacher of the Year Award. Not only does she show great compassion and patience while working with the students in the Anchor Program and resource room, but she extends that to all the students she comes across. Many students circulate through her room throughout the day and she always greets them with a smile and a warm welcome. She is always there to offer help to those struggling with any subject, even if it is not her strong suit, she pulls from her 15+ years of experience to explain it in ways the students would understand. Beyond helping with school work, she also engages the students and has meaningful conversations with them. She has perfected the balance of being clear about her standards and expectations, yet kind in her delivery - which is why many of the students respect her and love working in her classroom. We started the year with a vacancy in our science department, so Theresa took on extra classes with no advanced notice. She did a great job keeping these classes on track for 2 full months while continuing her already full schedule. Theresa is a true team player when it comes to her colleagues. She is willing to collaborate and give well thought out advice when warranted. “Big shout out to Mrs. Owens, our high school resource room teacher. She’s very kind, helpful and approachable. She always helps with our online classes and more.” - Current Student

KARI HORANEY ELEMENTARY SCHOOL Kari was awarded the Excellence in Teaching Award. She is by far a fan favorite teacher for our students. Kari is a focused, dynamic teacher. She provides her students with fresh, engaging and creative activities. She keeps classes fun and entertaining while still making sure our students are learning each step of the way. It is not unusual for Kari to be working directly with students helping them solve problems that arise in the classroom as well as on the playground. Kari encourages students to come up with different solutions to problem solve, allowing students to grow socially as well as academically. She mentors and inspires new teachers and brainstorms with colleagues on how to improve all aspects of learning. She planned multiple projects for our auction to help raise money for school improvements. Kari is always ready to volunteer for committees to troubleshoot and assist administration push out new initiatives. She is devoted to OLL and her students. She is a team leader, always willing to go beyond expectations and sets a great example for both students and staff. “Mrs. Horaney has been amazing with our son. She’s done an amazing job with keeping him engaged and wanting to learn more. He has this “thirst” for knowledge that she’s been able to quench. We’ve seen SO much growth within him since the fall and it just blows us away!” - Current Parent

alumni spotlight “At OLL it always felt like we were all one big family. You knew your friends‘ parents and siblings and were always welcome in their homes. I recall so many times before baseball games the whole team would gather in the Jennings family basement hanging out, sharing a meal before the game. Those are things that I want for my children too as they get older. We apply those same principles to our business today. If you do not leave our tasting room feeling like you were just hanging out in a friend/family member,s backyard then we failed on that interaction. We strive to learn something personal about each of our guests so we have something beyond wine to chat about next time they visit. The person who had the greatest impact on my life at OLL was Sister Fran. She was always there for the students to talk to and provide support in any way that she could. I recall my senior year Mr. Miller was always on me and Kyle Selahowski about being in the hall during class. One day Mr. Miller called us out over the PA to the whole school for being in the hall. Sister Fran did not like that, so she wrote Kyle and I a permanent hall pass for the rest of the year! Sister Fran was also the College counselor and pointed out that I should look into Arizona State University as a college option because a couple years earlier another student had gone out there for school. After looking into the school and taking a trip to see it in person, I decided to attend ASU which later led me to meeting my wife Lisa. Even after leaving Lakes we kept in close contact. Sister Fran later became my Godmother as she was my sponsor when I went through RCIA and became a member of the Catholic Church. Sister Fran had a huge impact on my life and I miss her very much. My wife Lisa and I were living in Arizona and decided to move to California near her parents and where she grew up. Our grandparents were a large part of our childhood and development and we wanted the same thing for our kids. After the birth of our first child we moved from Arizona to California. As soon as we moved to California we were quickly put to work on both my wife‘s family farm as well as our own. My father-in-law taught us to make wine and we have been growing pretty quickly. We are fortunate to live just east of Napa and live in one of the greatest wine grape growing regions in the world. Tolenas Winery is a small, family run operation. My father-in-law and brothers-in-law grow the grapes that we use to make the wine, my wife Lisa is the head winemaker and Chief Everything Officer and the key piece that makes the whole thing go. My sister-in-law, Laura, is the tasting room manager and our moms take care of our three children so that we can make all of this happen. We are grateful to be so close to family and get to spend so much time together. We still support the Laker Community because of our strong belief in a Catholic Education and having benefited from the relationships that were created and fostered at OLL that still exist today. The motto for our business is Family. Focused on Quality. I truly believe that the family aspect at OLL helped shape our business as we welcome each person who takes the time out of their day to visit us as if they were family.”

through his years at o “I was born in August 1942 in Saginaw, Michigan to John and Elizabeth Boyd. I had two older brothers, John and James, both deceased and an older sister Mary Elizabeth, who passed away when she was only a month old. I have a younger brother Wayne who still lives in Saginaw. I went to Saginaw SS Peter and Paul from the first grade on and graduated from there in 1960. SPP is now known as Nouvel Catholic Central. I then went on to Michigan State University and received my Bachelor of Science degree and my Master of Art degree. I graduated in June 1964. I was married to Karen Boyd and we had a daughter Lynn born in 1963. I was a commissioned officer in July 1964 and was supposed to go on active duty in October, but Karen was stricken by Leukemia and I received a deferment. I became a teacher at SPP and an assistant coach to my cousin Leo (Smokey) Boyd. Karen passed away on Feb 14 (Valentine’s Day), 1965. I used to spend time during the summers with my aunt and uncle in Waterford and went to Church at Lakes. On the day we buried Karen, my uncle passed away. He was going to be buried in Saginaw and my principal told me to take a week off. My aunt told me to go to her house in Waterford and stay since she was going to be in Saginaw for a while. When I was in Waterford, I would go over to church each day. My brother Jim had always joked with me about coming to Waterford to coach whenever I would stay with him. He told me that Lakes was just starting to look for a coach, since the present one was retiring. One of the days I was leaving the church Fr. Delaney drove up and asked me who I was and what I was doing here. (People who knew him always knew that he kept an eye on who was on OLL property and if you were a stranger he would check you out). I told him about my situation and why I was there. I can’t explain why but at that moment I asked him if I could apply for the coaching position. He said he had to go someplace but to go to the rectory and see the housekeeper and fill out an application. The housekeeper told me she had no application and no idea what Fr. D was talking about. She gave me a yellow pad and told me fill out what she thought he wanted and she would give it to him. After about 3-4 weeks I had heard nothing, so I was planning on remaining at SPP. One night Al Serra called and said he 20

I said yes. I proceeded with the interview and didn’t hear anything for another couple of weeks. He then called me and said Fr. D didn’t think I was old enough to be head coach, but that I could come to Lakes and be the assistant football and basketball coach. They thought I would not be able to communicate to players as a head coach since I was only 22 at the time. I told Mr. Serra that I was already an assistant to my cousin, who had been my coach, and I didn’t want to move to Waterford with an 18 month old daughter to take the same position I already had. I told him I could give him my ideas of coaching and my offense and defense in 20 minutes and if I couldn’t do that with players, I didn’t deserve to be a coach. He thanked me and understood my situation and hung up. A week later he called me to come to his home and explain everything to him in 20 minutes in his kitchen. I did so and after 20 minutes, he told me to wait and that he was going to go talk to Fr. D. He came back and said Fr. D still thought I was too young but it was up to Al and his committee. head football position, assistant basketball and head track coach. I talked it over with my brothers and my Coach Boyd and they said I should take it and that I would be okay. I did accept and then found out that as I was walking into the all sports banquet at Lakes to be introduced, that the guy who was to be the basketball head coach had just backed out and that I was now going to be the head basketball coach also. That is how I ended up at Lakes and if you asked my first players, like Dr. St. Louis, Randy Wise and others, my first 22

parents and to Our Lady of the Lakes. I started at Lakes in August 1965 and retired in December 2012. I coached football every year except during 1968. During that time I was a weekend coach as I was called back into the Army and could only get the weekends off to drive from Ft. Harrison in Indiana to Lakes for the games. My assistants were great and I missed the 1969 year as I was stationed in Texas. Basketball was from 1965 until late 1980’s and then a few years in the 90’s. Lastly I coached Softball from 1981 thru 2007. I have always said, I had the best administrators, the best players and students of any school. But the parents of the athletes were the greatest of all. From Janet Gerula, head of the team managers and especially my right hand assistant, who did all the things for me, so I could coach. To all of the moms and dads who made breakfasts and dinners before games and had food for players in between games and after games. To Mike Artley and his crew of dads who took care of game fields. built the press box and arranged for equipment to be transferred to games and back. To Jake for building his personal golf cart into the Laker equipment/medical cart, which was the envy of the Catholic league. To the moms, who took care of the preseason picnic and worked the chain gang, the

mopping mama’s, we had at basketball games and the raking mama’s, who raked infields in between softball games. Lakes had the best in the state of Michigan. I had the best assistant coaches like Mel Nuss, Joe Seeterlin, Jerry Chamberlain, and Bob Sahajdack. We spent well over 20 years plus together and many others who all put in great efforts during their tenures as assistants. We all loved the athletes of Lakes.” -Michael Boyd Coach, Teacher, Principal, AD & Business Manager 1965-2013

What are some of your favorite Laker Memories?

-“The 1983 Softball Championship game. We led 3-2 in the bottom of 7th, Morenci has runners at 2nd and 3rd and only one out. The ball was hit to Tracey Beadlescomb our pitcher towards first base, she catches the ball, turns, throws to home to Ann Serra our catcher who tags the girl out in a close play at the plate. She then throws to Vickie Norton, our third baseman and in a cloud of dust tags the runner coming from second. After a long pause the ump at third calls the girl out and we are State Champions for the first time.” -“The 2002 State football Championship at Silverdome against Gaylord St Mary. We are in overtime and we have held them to a field goal so they are ahead 10-7. We have tried 3 plays to score a TD and failed. I made decision to go for the TD instead of going for a field goal to tie again, even though we had a great kicker in Mo Fase. Mel, Joe, my son Andy, all want a FG try but in my gut if anything went wrong on the attempt some kids would blame themselves. I decided we were going for it even when it was 3rd down, if we failed it was my call. Murray Percival, who was a 4 year player and a great leader said to me, if we are going for it give me the ball and I will do it. We ran the same play as before, only Murray was carrying the ball and not blocking. As Jim Jennings hands the ball off and a mass of bodies collide, the sidelines was the worst place to be as you can’t see anything. Looking out there seemed like an hour as the officials go looking into this big pile and then you see Jim Jennings jumping up and down as the officials raise the arms for a TD and we are State Champions.”

What will you never forget about OLL? -“How Father Delaney loved his students and athletes. He would be on the sidelines for each football game, he would call me right away after a basketball game to see how we did.” -“Other Coaches used to ask how a small school like Lakes could have such great parent help in athletics, a number of schools followed Lakes lead. We had great parent and student followings, whether we were playing at home, Chicago, Fort Recovery Ohio or Cleveland, we often had more people following us than the other home team.”

What was your favorite team to coach at OLL? -“Favorite team is hard because we were fortunate to have many good ones. But one is my first football team. First year, they had not won more than 3 games in a season. I switched players from positions they had played before to new ones and many were not happy. I just asked them to believe in me and in themselves. We had fun! They were underdogs all year, but they learned to believe in themselves and we went undefeated and won a title.”

DAR Good Citizen Award Senior Maya Lafnear was presented with the Good Citizen award by the Daughters of the American Revolution’s Sashabaw Plains Chapter. This award is given to students who possess the qualities of dependability, service, leadership and patriotism. In order to apply, Maya had to complete an essay on “Our American Heritage and Our Responsibility for Preserving It: “How do the qualities of a good citizen (dependability, service, leadership and patriotism) help support our nation?”. Maya wrote in her essay: "By having dependability, service, leadership and patriotism in each of us, we will further achieve more in life by the way we serve our nation as a whole. These traits are what will establish the good of our nation and what benefits us as a society".

Morency and Blust Scholarship Recipient The Morency and Blust Scholarship is in honor of Mickey and Irene Morency and Raymond and Patricia Blust. The Morency and Blust Scholarship has been established to assist a graduating OLL senior in paying a portion of the first year’s tuition at their chosen institution of higher education. This wonderful opportunity has been afforded to us by Mickey, Irene, Raymond, and Patricia, who believe in the value of higher education and the prudent investment needed to attain that education. Congratulations Maria Oliver on being the 2022 recipient!

Junior Inducted into the National Technical Honor Society at Oakland Technical Congratulations to junior, Helen Schneider for being inducted into the National Technical Honor Soctiety at Oakland Technical. Our Lady of the Lakes partners with Oakland Technical, which allows our juniors and seniors to attend vocational school and learn an employable trade. The programs last one to two years. Most students begin vocational school in their junior year, but it can also be added in their senior year. Vocational school offers an alternative for students who do not plan to attend college or want to begin their college courses toward a career, often creating a career for the future. “I am in a cosmetology program at OSTC where we work on skin, hair, and nails along with learning the history of cosmetology. We also learn alot about the anatomy of the human body and are on a strict but organized study schedule for each week. I decided to go into cosmetology because I was good with hair and communicating with people on what they wanted. I plan to use my license to work in a salon throughout college while I study for my major. I view cosmetology as a very convenient side job that makes good money. Attending OSTC everyday along with OLL is wonderful. Although I do very well in my main courses at OLL, sometimes it is nice to have a getaway to a new atmosphere. I have never been closer with another group of girls than the ones in my cosmetology class. I learn so much from them and from my teacher everyday.” - Helen Schneider

high school reimagined

We are part of an amazing community of faith in the Archdiocese of Detroit. For decades, our Catholic schools have served as a model of academic excellence, as well as personal and spiritual growth. BE A GOOD STUDENT, DEVELOP IN FAITH, ATTEND COLLEGE. While this model has served Catholic school communities well, we believe that there is more we can do to prepare our students for the world ahead. We believe our students can be more and that they should be given the tools to CHOOSE their own pathway to excellence. This school year we rolled out our new 2021-22 vision for Our Lady of the Lakes Catholic High School. Our high school staff and students were very excited to begin this new year with endless opportunities. As we prepare them for life beyond Lakes, we will provide them with real life opportunities and experiences. Our goal is to truly meet the needs of all of our learners, regardless of their post high school path. With periods offering choice experiences and time to collabo-

We are student-centered and seek Lakers, as a community in faith, a service and academics, college and tunities to our students that will p lem solving, and advance with c rate, our students are really striving with our new model. With our new vision our students have the opportunity to participate in Christian Service Experiences, Social Value Projects, Internships on campus, as well as reimagine the purpose of their school day by maximizing its potential. Below is how we want our students to focus their time during their 4 years of high school. Self-Advocacy We believe that if given permission, students will advocate for what they want in their school, take on leadership roles, and positions of responsibility. We believe that in a world filled with CHOICES, the most important thing we can teach our students is how and why their choices matter.

28

SOCIAL VALUE

Developing and Demonstrating Abilities Even the most gifted of students need

to develop the skills to practice their gifts. All students at OLL have an opportunity to explore their personal passions, including requesting subjects to be taught, clubs to be run, and student led curricular opportunities. Additionally, a focus on students demonstrating daily that they are learning and developing the skills necessary to succeed in whatever comes next in life.

Student-Centered Flexible Daily Schedule Our students will experience core subjects, have AP courses, dual enrollment, and electives available. We believe that these are the foundation of a strong educational institution. Where we set ourselves apart, is that we empower our students and staff to make the most of the time they are given. With student collaboration centers and student led organizations and clubs, students will choose where to focus, what to attend, and learn to maximize their time in our building. College and Real-World Readiness Students are not one dimensional and as educators our mission must not be either. We strive for academic excellence, but also personal discipline. We

k to foster self-advocacy in our learners. are mutually committed to growth towards d real-world readiness. We provide opporprepare them to network, engage in probconfidence in any area of their choosing.

SERVICE will provide students in equal measure the tools needed to attend the nations top colleges, or if they choose, a leg up in starting a business, developing an idea into a product, and expanding their understanding and skill set in the trades. We will teach networking and life skills, offer internships and support.

FLEX TIME

“What a GREAT CHANGE the remodel has been for Our Lady of the Lakes! It gives every student the chance to have a say in their own personal learning and growth. For myself, the remodel has given me the time to take experiences that I am interested in that I may not have had the opportunity to take before.” - Maya Lafnear (Current Student) 29

elementary We‘re Growing!

We are growing each day, with several classes near capacity! We have added 100+ students to our Laker community just this school year. With 90+ students attending our Early Childhood Programs we continue to provide a faith-filled “first-school” experience for all of our students. Each child is seen as unique and loved by God. We support the growth and development of the whole child and strive to lay a strong foundation that readies our youngest students for future learning. The picture to the right features our Early Childhood Programs consisting of PreK I, PreK II, & Kindergarten.

Student Council The Elementary Student Council is important at OLL because it gives the students a chance to learn and grow as leaders. Student council members plan spirit days for the students to participate in and showcase school pride. They lead morning prayer and the Rosary at church, while also raising money for projects that benefit our school community. The 5th and 6th grade council members are role models for the elementary student body. (2021-2022 Student Council pictured below)

OLL is proud to offer a camp even for our littlest Lakers! For the second year in a row, this parent lead program, engages our youngest Lakers in activities designed to instill confidence, teach foundational elements of team play and sportsmanship, and of course develop a love for sports. Our program philosophy is to try your best, learn something new, and have fun! Each year we have been extremely grateful to have 30+ students and or friends and family of our Laker community register and attend this newly established program. This year specifically we have several Laker Alum, whose children are a part of this program and will be continuing through Lakes in the future as second or more generation Lakers together.

CYO Athletics Congratulations to our 7/8 CYO Girls Basketball Team who were Division Champs & East Side Champs. They made it to the CYO Finals vs. St. Issaac Jogues leaving as runner up with a 19-1 record and the 2nd best team in all CYO girls basketball. Our 2/3/4 CYO Football Team finished their season strong and undefeated as Division Champs. They were awarded their trophy at this years‘ Prep Bowl ceremony. camp tamarack WE‘RE BACK! “After a 2 year break, OLL 5th & 6th grade students picked up the spring camping tradition. We enjoyed an exciting 3 day/2 night adventure at the beautiful, 1,250 acre Camp Tamarack in Ortonville, MI. The weather was exceptional, the students were excited, and our fabulous Laker parents were plentiful. This was the perfect combination for an outstanding outdoor learning experience. Our days were filled with activities such as canoeing, archery, outdoor cooking, rock climbing, zip lining, and high ropes. The students enjoyed competing in mock olympic games and spending time around the campfire. They also learned to work as a team, to support each other as they stretched their comfort zones, and to reach a new level of independence all while experiencing the great outdoors of Michigan. These are the skills that they will bring back with them to apply throughout their lives. All the students achieved more than they thought they would and should be proud that they helped their classmates do the same.” - Donna Piot 5th Grade Teacher
