Dear Friends of Our Lady of the Lakes, Our student body is a faith-filled group of young people containing a definite thirst for God and knowledge deep within their hearts. They are to be commended as extraordinary young people with a passion for Jesus Christ. Our students, past and present, are a tremendous compliment to us. They used the educational foundation received here and represent us well in their endeavors. This attitude is part of what makes Catholic schools so great. We have the ability to charitably teach discipline and hope in the resurrection of Jesus Christ from the dead. It brings me great joy and satisfaction to be the Pastor at our parish and our PreK-12 Catholic School. Our children are a great gift from God and I am simply honored to play a part in their formation. This is yet another benefit of a Catholic education. At Our Lady of the Lakes we are not interested in simply providing an alternative to the public school system. We fulfill a ministry by serving God while providing a profound educational experience helping our students to become joyful missionary disciples. After graduation, our students excel academically receiving the highest honors possible at institutions of great distinction. We must continue to be part of this mission and communicate our successes to one and all. Please consider a Catholic education at Our Lady of the Lakes for your children. God Bless, Fr. Scott Thibodeau

LETTER FROM OUR HEAD OF SCHOOL Dear Friends of Our Lady of the Lakes, Our Lady of the Lakes Catholic School embodies a safe, nurturing, and faith-based educational environment where each child receives significant personal attention and love from a family-like community. It is a place where students learn to love God and one another while getting to know who they are and how to be the best they can be. It is a blessing to work in a place where we share the mission of living our vocation as disciples, modeling Christ’s love in the care we give our students. We invite you to see for yourself what makes Our Lady of the Lakes Catholic School such a one-of-a-kind place to learn and grow through God and the Catholic faith. God Bless, Mrs. Jeanine Kenny Head of School

Our History In September of 1948, the late Edward Cardinal Mooney, realized the need for a new parish in the rapidly growing area to the north and west of Pontiac. He appointed Rev. Frederick J. Delaney to start a parish in this vicinity. The area was so vast that two parishes were started, one at Oxbow Lake and the other in Waterford. The one in Waterford enclosing a virtual “Land of Lakes”, was dedicated to Our Lady of the Lakes. On October 28, 1956, ground was broken for a new grade school on the church property of Our Lady of the Lakes Parish in Waterford. Two years later, our first classes began with grades 5-8. Each year we added a new upper grade until the High School was complete. In June of 1962, our first graduating class celebrated commencements. By 1985, our community had grown so much, we outgrew our current church building and ground was broken for a new church Rev. Frederick J. Delaney - 1962 to be built on the property. Our school, too, grew to the point it became necessary to add four classrooms, a common area and a second gymnasium. These new additions were opened during the 1992 school year. Today, Our Lady of the Lakes Catholic School continues to demonstrate a commitment to shaping the future by providing an education focused on skills necessary for the 21st century.

Congratulations to Mike Sullivan and Shannon Long on this accomplishment! Mike Sullivan, class of 2011, who you might recognize as “Sully” from 97.1 The Ticket, worked at the radio station for 6 years before leaving to focus on building his own business. In 2019, he started Brand25 Media LLC, with co-owner Kyle Bogenshutz, to help companies with digital services, including marketing and running social media accounts. Currently, they have approximately 40 clients ranging from health care companies to country clubs. Its largest customers include NexCare WellBridge Senior Living and Hall Financial. Shannon Long, class of 2010, started her company, Brew Export LLC after an assignment in her international marketing capstone class at MSU in 2014. She wanted to create a marketing plan to export beer to Singapore and after winning a pitch competition, she decided to take the $1,000.00 winnings and turn her dream into a reality. Long works with approximately 150 craft breweries to get their products to shelves, pubs or events in 30 different countries. Some of her local clients include Ferndale Project, Griffin Claw, and Eastern Market Brewing Co. We couldn't be more proud of these two Laker Alum for putting faith in their future and becoming the successes they are today. 3rd ANNUAL HARRY MILLER CLASSIC GOLF OUTING Sunday, October 3rd, 2021 - 1PM

In 2019, Our Lady of the Lakes hosted the first annual “Harry Miller Classic” Golf Outing at Fountains Golf & Banquet Center in Clarkston. The Harry Miller Classic is named in memory of Our Lady of the Lakes teacher, administrator, and golf coach Harry Miller. Miller retired from Lakes in 2014 after serving the community for 35 years. He passed away in May 2019 at the age of 67. He was both the boys and girls golf coach for many years. All proceeds raised at this event will go towards “Tuition Angels” which directly helps those students in financial need at OLL. We are proud to report that last year it helped 18 students receive financial assistance in Catholic education. All current parents, parishioners, alumni and friends are welcome and encouraged to join us. We hope to see you this year!

SCHOOL AUCTION

Coming Spring 2022 - We are sailing to Greece!

Our Lady of the Lakes annual auction is our largest fundraiser - raising just over $90,000 in 2021 being 100% virtual. All money raised through the auction directly benefits our students by providing them with the best opportunities and resources available through curriculum enhancements, developmental programs, technological upgrades, student support services and more. Whether you want to donate to OLL, help support the auction with a sponsorship, or just simply participate with us as a community, we invite you to be a part of this amazing event.

Become a Tuition Angel!

OLL believes it is important to provide the opportunity for a Catholic education to all families. Your gift as a Tuition Angel will have an immediate impact on the lives of current and future students. This fund provides the critical dollars necessary to subsidize tuition assistance opportunities that are provided by our parish and extended to families who would otherwise not be able to afford to provide a Catholic education for their children. The Knake family is a testament to this. Al and Terri Knake are parents to three Laker Alumni: Heidi (Knake) Newby, Jason Knake, and Katie (Knake) Larsen. They are also proud grandparents to current Our Lady of the Lakes students. This multi-generational Laker family is just the beginning of the story. In July of 2020, it was discovered that Mr. Knake was in the advanced stages of liver disease. His only hope for recovery was a liver transplant. Sorrow followed joy, when a donor was found, and then subsequently fell through. With few options left, the family turned to social media , seeking help from the Laker Alumni Community, among other places, in the Laker alumni community. After 400+ shares, another Laker Alum, Janet (Whalen) Alexander came to their rescue. Janet graduated with Heidi Knake in 1992. Janet went through all possible testing and was finally approved to be Mr. Knake’s liver donor. The Knake family is beyond grateful for the generosity that Janet displayed. Katie Larsen states: “It's true what they say about Lakes - we're a family, and we take care of each other. Janet's gift is beyond overwhelming. I really have no words. She is a precious saint that is saving my dad's life. Her gift will allow him to be around to watch his grandkids grow up and allow him to fulfill his promise he made to my mom over 47 years ago: to grow old with her.” When you are a Laker, you are family. These words are spoken often around this community.

Writing Our Catholic Faith Our elementary students use Universal Publishing’s "Writing Our Catholic Faith" books for handwriting. Cursive writing improves finger dexterity and tactile control, creates multiple layers of understanding for words and letters, and helps students to view words as a connected whole. They practice using Catholic words and verses, meaning while they are practicing forming letters correctly, they are forming their faith as well!

Journeys Reading Program Our Lady of the Lakes follows the Archdiocese of Detroit's curriculum by proudly integrating the Journeys Reading Program in each of our K-6 classrooms. This immersive program engages students in deep and engaging Language Arts lessons, meeting the needs of each and every one of our students. This series follows our elementary students year by year, providing consistency and challenges every step of the way. "The Journeys Program works wonders! It's a rigorous series that incorporates reading, spelling, grammar, and writing all in one. Students read engaging stories while learning to analyze, interpret, and synthesize various text structures", Mrs. Horaney, 3rd Grade Teacher.

Spanish Una idioma nueva es una vida nueva - A new language is new a life Our Lady of the Lakes teaches Spanish language to students as young as kindergarten. Students are immersed in the language, music, and visual arts of this rich culture. Mrs. Sawicki, who has been teaching at OLL for 9 years, says that she “Finds the language to be beautiful when spoken and fun to listen to...I love being a part of the growing and learning process in children when it comes to education. Teaching world language is an important part of our students' lives because it helps them to problem solve, better their cognitive abilities, gives them a head start for college requirements, and increases the students' understanding of other cultures connecting them with those that speak different languages.” Mrs. Sawicki is just one of our many amazing “specials” teachers, who help our Lakers to experience all that the world has to offer.

Name a Space at Lakes

Something new and unique is coming to Our Lady of the Lakes High School in 2021-2022. We believe our students can be more and that they should be given the tools to choose their own pathway to excellence. Because of this we are starting campus improvements and renovations this Summer. These renovations will help to shape an ideal learning atmosphere for our students. Naming opportunities begin at $10,000 with a one-time donation or a two-year pledge. Recognition on a specific area is non -exclusive; up to four donors may have recognition on a single space. For more information about naming the new OLL High School Collaboration Center, please contact our Advancement Office 248-623-0340 x 3 or email advancement@ollonline.org. Vision Statement: We are student-centered and seek to foster self-advocacy in our learners. Lakers, as a community in faith, are mutually committed to growth towards service and academics, college and real-world readiness. We provide opportunities to our students that will prepare them to network, engage in problem solving, and advance with confidence in any area of their choosing. Photo Credit: Steelcase Furniture
