WHERE IS THE

BLACK & BROWN ART IN AUSTIN, TEXAS?

THE ART EXHIBIT OF THE YEAR

For decades, Black and Brown artists have shaped the culture of Austin yet their work is too often erased, ignored, or displaced. ECHOES is an exhibition reclaiming space, showcasing the past, present, and future of BIPOC artistry in the city.

Inside: The full story, featured artists, and how you can get involved.

PAST, PRESENT, AND FUTURE

Black and Brown artists have long shaped Austin’s culture, yet their presence in galleries and institutions remains limited. What happened?

PAST: Once-thriving creative hubs like the Victory Grill and the Chicano mural movement gave voice to Black and Brown communities But gentrification, rezoning, and underfunding erased many of these spaces, displacing artists and their histories

PRESENT: As East Austin’s cultural landmarks disappear, BIPOC artists create in clubs, pop-ups, and DIY spaces yet even these are under threat from redevelopment and rising rents

FUTURE: ECHOES is a response. This exhibition reclaims space for the next generation of Black and Brown artists, celebrating their past, honoring their present, and imagining a future where their work is central to Austin’s identity
